Happy Holidays from all of us at UFV As a local institution that has grown steadily over the past 45 years, the University of the Fraser Valley makes an incredible impact by engaging learners, transforming lives, and building community.

We are very proud of our students and our alumni, and of the difference they’re making, and will continue to make, here at home and beyond the Fraser Valley. I’m truly optimistic about our future and our ability to contribute to the growth and prosperity of our region, but we can’t achieve our full potential without help from our local community.

At UFV, we rely on the support and generosity of those who share our belief in the transformative power of education. There are so many opportunities for you to engage, to help support and strengthen our university, your university. From hiring our students to volunteering, offering practicum placements or contributing to research projects, supporters like you are helping students make a difference.

Today, there are many students on their way to becoming our future carpenters, nurses, teachers or accountants, but who are in need of financial support to continue or complete their education. Christine Drew, 2019 Graduate, B.Sc. Nursing Christine Drew is an expert in balance. A 2019 nursing graduate, Drew juggled a full course load with hospital volunteering, student mentoring, and health sciences research, and her role as a mother of three.

Throughout Christine’s UFV education, her dedication and incredible multi-tasking ability were empowered by the receipt of multiple financial rewards that helped her pay for tuition and other costs.

degree, I’m here to tell you, it made a world of difference,” she says. “What could have been seen as ‘poor timing’ was really just perspective. Nursing school was challenging and stressful, but I have grown as an individual, as a mother, and as a future nurse.”

Today, Christine is looking forward to working on both a surgical and maternity unit, with the hopes of specializing as a labour and delivery nurse.

Jesse Wegenast, 2012 Graduate, B.A. Geography, 2019 Young Distinguished Alumni As a pastor with 5 and 2 Ministries and a resource person with Archway Community Services who serves as an intermediary for those who are unhoused, poor, mentally ill, aged, and struggling with addictions, Jesse Wegenast has helped to reshape conversations for Abbotsford’s most marginalized populations.

“I have always felt a pull toward helping people in need,” he says. “UFV in particular helped me to understand underlying systemic issues that create social problems, and gave me the tools to begin to address those problems.”

Wegenast earned his BA in Geography at UFV in 2012, and has spent the past decade as one of Abbotsford’s leading advocates for the rights of the homeless and those dealing with addictions.

For his extensive and wide ranging community work, Wegenast was chosen as the winner of UFV’s Young Distinguished Alumni award for 2019.
