he days are shorter, the nights are colder, and the holidays are just around the corner. Whether you’re escaping from Jack Frost for some place warm or heading home for the holidays, this time of year can bring many reasons to travel. And, as always, Wilson’s has you covered. If you are a storm watcher, there is no better place to take in the crashing waves than Vancouver Island’s West Coast. Book a trip on our Tofino Bus, sit back and relax while we take care of the drive during these winter conditions. Both Tofino and Ucluelet have some of the best storm-watching opportunities, hiking trails and accommodations on Vancouver Island. Looking to go walking in a winter wonderland this holiday season? Starting the first week of December, our BC Connector will be increasing its service to Whistler Village, which is even more beautiful when it’s covered in a blanket of snow. If you’re on Vancouver Island and looking to hit the slopes, our Mount

Washington Ski Bus begins service the first Friday in December. It will be in operation seven days a week for the entire month. If you are like me and my family and you call Victoria home, or if you’re coming here for a visit this December, make sure you check out some of the festive activities going on around town. Back by popular demand, our Gray Line Sightseeing Victoria will be offering a special holiday addition of our “Reasons to Go.” This helpful booklet showcases many of our favourite local partners and their holiday-inspired offerings. Also, on December 21 and 22, come ride our iconic double-decker bus and meet with the one and only Santa Clause, as we take you on a special tour with some added stops that will leave you feeling holly and jolly! the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. Take a walk through the mall to see the beautifully decorated trees by some of Victoria’s local businesses, and vote for your favourite! New this year, the Downtown Victoria Business Association will be turning Victoria’s Centennial Square into the beautiful “Lights of Wonder.” Grab your loved ones and some hot chocolate and go for an evening stroll to take in the magical display. And, if the “Lights of Wonder” leaves you wanting more, hop onto our CVS Tours coach and make your way out to The Butchart Gardens annual “12 Days of Christmas” light display. This is one of my family’s personal holiday favourites! Finally, as we say goodbye to 2019 on December 31, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone — our customers, staff, community partners, family and friends — for all their support this year. he entire holiday season unfolds as brightly and colourfully as a gift under the tree, and the weeks leading up to December 25 offer lots of chances to bundle up and enjoy the festivities. Opportunities abound — from window shopping at lit-up storefronts to myriad seasonal events. During a recent holiday season, I set out with a friend to experience the much-touted, German-style Vancouver Christmas Market. A must-do event, the market is celebrating its 10th season this year. Located on Vancouver’s waterfront at Jack Poole Plaza — home of the Olympic Cauldron — it features more than 80 huts of authentic German sweets, treats and treasures. It runs

this year from November 20 to December 24. Christmas markets, called Christkindlmarkt, are a 700-year-old tradition in German towns. They are described as “festive meeting places” and “joyous, anticipated events, bringing light and laughter to a cold, dark season.” We arrived on a crisp, cloudy Vancouver day and toured the market before returning again at night to see it all lit up. At our first stop we purchased mugs of steaming mulled wine, which quickly warmed our insides and, on top of that, tasted delicious. German food options were bountiful. My friend munched on a bratwurst as we wandered by other huts that sold CONNECTOR l THE WILSON’S GROUP

items such as traditional Christmas cookies, lebkuchen (a baked Christmas treat similar to gingerbread), roasted chestnuts and stollen (a spiced Christmas cake). I watched a young boy press his nose against a case of handmade chocolates. There were lots of drink options too, including German beer, hot-spiced red wine and a German drink called feuerzangenbowle. Guests won’t want to miss WunderBAR, where you can enjoy festive cocktails and holiday-inspired bites in a brightly decorated hide-away setting. It can be booked ahead of time for hour-long seatings. Colourful merchandise hanging in and around the huts added to the visual splendour of the event, especially the many offerings of brightly painted, handmade Christmas ornaments. There were also woollen scarves and hats, wooden and tin toys, jewellery, stained glass and nutcrackers galore. Each year, the market offers a line-up of holiday entertainment, which takes place on the Flying Stage from Vancouver’s only Christmas Pyramid. There are arts and crafts at the Kinderhuts, visits by Santa, trivia games and prizes, and downtown Vancouver’s one-and-only Christmas Carousel. You can take a walk around and even in the walk-in Christmas tree, which stands at 30 feet tall and blooms with 36,000 twinkling lights. Among the many other Vancouver holiday traditions is the Bright Nights Christmas Train and Stanley Park Train Plaza, which runs this year from November 28 to January 4, and comes to life with three million twinkling lights. I attended one year with my adult daughter, and we wished we’d made it an annual tradition when she was a child. Still, despite our “advanced” ages, we had a wonderful time taking in the sites as we sipped hot cider. At this event, visitors can purchase tickets to ride the Bright Nights Train, and then ride through sparkling lights, past wonderful displays and live performers along the route. The displays at the Train Plaza can also be viewed by donation ($5 suggested). The event gets great reviews and is extremely popular so visitors are encouraged to buy tickets in advance. Donations at the front gate and a portion of ticket sales go to the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund. Some $1.4 million has been raised to help burn survivors and their families since 1998. etermined to develop my questionable shopping skills, I set out on a journey of product discovery in downtown Victoria. I have two goals. First, I hope to visit some fascinating shops and purchase some unusual items. The second is personal: I want to demonstrate to my wife that I — and men in general — are shoppers too. I meander north from the Inner Harbour

with its flotilla of yachts, floatplanes and kayaks, heading along Government Street in the very heart of Victoria. I’m enjoying this excursion already, wandering along rows of historic buildings with shops, pubs, eateries and cafés — it’s clearly a popular destination. Entering Old Morris Tobacconist, I feel like I’ve stepped back in time. The store, the oldest tobacconist in Canada,

was established in 1892, and is a national historic site. Much of the store’s original interior still remains, offering an air of “High Victorian.” An electrolier of rare Mexican onyx stands in the centre of the store, spouting two jets of flame for lighting cigars. Wires around the flames protect moustaches and beards. Originally, it included one of the first electric light bulbs in the city. Finally, I select a Belinda cigar from Cuba because, according to owner Dilip Sahijwani, it is milder and therefore more suitable for an infrequent smoker.

A short distance later, I’m drawn into Mango’s Boutique & Accessories on Johnson Street. The importance of quality and attentive service is quickly demonstrated by Nicole, who, with her husband James, owns and operates the men’s and women’s clothing store. “We carry unique brands and I am constantly working to get in the latest colours and fashions,” says Nicole, CONNECTOR l THE WILSON’S GROUP

showing me some colourful sports jackets and shirts. At Nicole’s suggestion, I slip one on. Great! I’m certain it makes me look younger, trendier. A short stroll down Government Street and I’m greeted by Black Goat Cashmere. Its attractive displays are proof that simplicity is the epitome of elegance. All of Black Goat’s cashmere is sourced from goats in Mongolia and only the best long yarns from the undercoat are used. The result is a soft, durable fabric that is far warmer and more breathable than Merino wool. I run my hand along the best-selling printed shawls and find them incredibly soft. I try on a quarter-zip, two-tone sweater, astonished at its comfort and warmth — and it looks pretty good too! Accessories next, I think, as I stride into Lugaro, a fine jewellery and watch shop. I’m drawn in, partly because Lugaro is committed to using Canadian diamonds and gold. Just as significantly, however, Lugaro carries Victoria’s biggest selection of Rolex watches, something I’ve long yearned for. Donning cotton gloves, store manager Krikor Kuspekian pulls out several Rolex models, explaining they are precision-made in Switzerland. Since 1905, Rolexes have been on the wrists of explorers and achievers around the world, and I am keen to join them. The Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II models embody the spirit of the sailor. The Yacht-Master II brings together the finest in Rolex technology to create a regatta chronograph built for yachting competition. Krikor also shows me some of the exotic diamond settings for ladies and gives me a short lesson on the four important “Cs”of diamonds: cut, clarity, colour and carats. I return to the Rolex counter and gaze wistfully at the elegant look of the Oyster collection. Outside, I turn the corner and enter d.g. bremner, whose specialities are menswear and accessories. High-end Italian and European shirts, pants, sweaters, sportswear and suits surround me. Even better, Paul and Oggy really care about making the customer look good, and with more than six decades of experience between them, know how to do it. As I try on a pair of Coppley trousers, they carefully take measurements and make a few adjustments. “Our master tailor will make this perfect,” CONNECTOR l THE WILSON’S GROUP

says Paul. “And that’s important to us: after all, you will be a walking mannequin, advertising our store.” I can’t wait to impress my wife with the new slacks. Nearby, Simply the Best carries more pens — about 10,000— than any store in Canada, so I can’t resist. Soon my head is swimming, for the store carries a cornucopia of unusual, discerning products including haberdashery, high-end watches, moustache wax, Moser glassware (the crystal of kings), Forge de Laguiole pocket knives — using 27 different woods — and much more. Jim, the owner, hands me the Homo Sapiens pen, noting it is made of basaltic lava from Mount Etna volcano. I scrawl my signature smoothly with the 23-k palladium tip. “This would even make chequewriting enjoyable,” I think. Laden with bags, I head back to the hotel, confident my wife will be proud.

“Tickets grant unlimited access to our Hop-On/Hop-Off double-decker bus service, allowing passengers to discover Greater Victoria at their own pace,” Brianna says. “It’s truly the best way to discover Victoria’s must-see points of interest.” All tours are conducted in Sightseeing Victoria’s well-maintained and comfortable fleet of closed and opentopped double-decker buses, each of which can seat up to 80 passengers. Prices for the Christmas Ho-Ho Tour are $40 for adults, $25 for youth and $15 for children. Kids between the ages of 0 and 5 ride for free. The special event tours on December 21 and 22 will be subject to an additional charge. Grace Van den Brink is the first woman president of the storied Union Club of British Columbia. What’s the one thing you’d never be without and why? Books. I continue to be amazed that a few pieces of paper and ink can calm, inform, excite and take us to new places. We can’t buy happiness, but we can always buy a book — or at the very least visit the library!

What is your proudest achievement? I’m honoured to serve as the first woman president of the Union Club of BC and I thank the membership for their support. Songs and Stories Getting into the holiday spirit with Ken Lavigne

or many, the time to celebrate the Christmas spirit starts in December. For Ken Lavigne, that time actually starts in June. That’s when the talented tenor begins planning his annual Christmas concert in Victoria — one of his favourite performances of the year. This December, Lavigne returns to the Royal Theatre in Victoria for Songs and Stories of Christmas, performing a matinee and evening show. “My goal is to entertain — to tap into that joyful spirit of the season,” Lavigne says. “Our goal is to have you filled with joy and hope for a wonderful Christmas, whether you’re going away or have family coming to town.” Lavigne will perform traditional Christmas songs such as O Holy Night, White Christmas and other carols. Last year’s concert included what

Lavigne calls “audience participation antics.” Some 2,500 imported snowballs were used by the audience to have an indoor snowball fight. It was such a hit that Lavigne plans to bring it back again this year. In addition, Lavigne will add elements of storytelling to this year’s festivities. “I love giving context to some of these songs that I’m performing — what they might mean to me and some of the history behind them,” says Lavigne, noting he loves storytelling, especially with his two kids. “Each of these songs has its own unique character.” While Lavigne has performed around North America, including at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York, he admits there’s no feeling quite like performing in Victoria. “I love that energy that comes with performing to a packed house in front of

a hometown crowd,” says Lavigne, who spent his formative years on the West Shore and now calls Chemainus home. “It’s really exciting.
