We all know we live in the best place on Earth, but it wouldn’t be without the wonderful people of the community and the fabulous lifestyle provided by the many lakes, rivers, streams, beaches and venues at which we can take our families, friends, or even be alone. Of course, it’s also wonderful that when we go to these places, we know that the people we stumble across will be those same ones who give us the great service, advice and attention as we go about our business around town. BEST PLACE TO BE A TOURIST: The Elk Falls Suspension Bridge has been a staple of the tourism diet in Campbell River since it was installed a few years ago, but you’d be hard pressed to find a local who doesn’t make the short trip up Highway 28 once in a while to check it out, too. After a short, picturesque walk through the forest along well-maintained trails, you emerge into the canyon to one of the most awe-inspiring sights you can see anywhere on the planet. Just behind the bridge and falls on this year’s list is the Discovery Pier, where the giant waffle cones often block the huge smiles of those enjoying them, but you know they’re back there grinning away, looking forward to the next bite. BEST CITY PROJECT WORTH THE WAIT: The new mountain bike skills park, opened just this past summer, has been almost a decade in the making since organizers and proponents first went before city council with the idea. But not a day has gone by since it welcomed its first rider that you drive by and don’t see a ton of activity happening on the other side of the fence rails. And phases 2 and 3 of the project are sure to deliver even more fun. The roundabout at the bottom of Rockland Hill has been in the city’s plan even longer, and will be arriving shortly, earning it a spot on the finalist list beside the new intersection at Willow Creek and Jubilee Parkway, which now gives the residents of the fastest-growing area of town another entry point into their subdivision. YOUTH ACTIVIST: If you somehow don’t know the name Sylas Thompson yet, welcome back out from under your rock. This year, 11-year-old Sylas took to the frigid waters off the Tyee Spit every day, starting on Feb. 1, for a swim to raise money for two local organizations. After 36 consecutive days of swims, he collected $37,217.48 and divided it between the Women’s Resource Centre and Grassroots Kind Hearts. But let’s not ignore Tara Jordan with the John Howard Society’s ongoing efforts for youth in our community as the KidStart Mentoring Program Coordinator or the Girl Guides of Campbell River, which helps shape the future leaders of this and other communities.

There’s nothing quite like the feeling you get when you are eating good food and/or having good drinks drink with those you love, and it’s even more special, somehow, when you don’t have to do the cooking or cleaning up afterwards. And Campbell River has more than its fair share of local restaurants, pubs, coffee shops and other venues to delight the taste buds and warm hearts, which is why it is one of the largest and hotlycontested categories in the annual Readers’ Choice Awards. BEST BAKERY: Dave and Dave get up shortly after some of us go to bed each day to get started on the bagels, cakes, loaves and other goods produced at Dave’s Bakery, and the people have decided they were the best at doing so this past year. Newly-relocated just a bit further to the south on the old highway into the Willows Market location, the Daves are clearly something special in the local culinary community. Oh, they also happened to share a win in the “Best Dessert” category. Of course, if you’re at the other end of town, Perks Donuts has long been one of the community’s favourites – they also happened to win the “Best Doughnut” category – and if you’re closer to the middle of town, check out one of Campbell River’s newest faves, Fresh Start Bistro up by the Campbell River Mirror on Dogwood. BEST BREAKFAST/BRUNCH: The Ideal Cafe was the first winner in the newest category for this year’s awards, earning inaugural bragging rights (for at least a year) as the best place to go for breakfast or brunch. As one of Campbell River’s oldest and most established eateries, the Ideal Cafe hearkens back to the diners of the 50s, has generous portions at a reasonable price, and is famous for their friendly service (and their milkshakes). Popsey’s Restaurant on Ironwood Street was also named a finalist this year for its down-home cooking and atmosphere, as was Dolphins Resort, which is well worth the trip to the northern tip of the community. BEST PATIO: If you’re looking for a bite to eat or place to relax with a drink under the open sky, SoCal Restaurant and Lounge has been voted the place to be in Campbell River this year, but like the nominees in the “Best Bakery” category, where you choose to dine outside may very well be determined by which area of town you want to be in at any given time, as SoCal will welcome you (for a Readers’ Choice Award-winning Caesar) in Willow Point, Quay West’s patio overlooks the docks downtown and Painter’s Lodge overlooks the Johnstone Straight and Quadra Island from the northern tip of town. Gotta love having amazing choices for where to get your food with a view.

Campbell River’s local shops and services have all you need for your home, auto, gift and grocery needs, as well as specialty locally-made products you just can’t get anywhere else. It’s no wonder this is the largest category in the Readers’ Choice Awards. Let’s look at some recommendations from the community on where you should be headed when you’re looking for whatever it is you need. BEST NEW BUSINESS: Businesses in this category needed to open within the last two years, and all of them have already made a great impact on the local scene. Sessions Bistro & Spin Room is a unique new place where you can get a workout followed by a cool-down with an adult beverage. The Bower Store & Studio on Dogwood near 2nd Avenue has been a welcome addition to the local handcrafted-arts offerings and Freshstart Bistro (Bower’s neighbour) is quickly becoming a must-go destination for Campbell River Foodies. BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE: Whether it’s helping someone find the exact product they need to purchase or giving out free advice, these businesses do it best. Pedal Your World – which also happened to win “Best Bike Shop” this year – in Merecroft Village, Dogwood Petmart just up the street and Stonehouse Teas downtown have been recognized by the community as being the best at providing a welcoming and memorable customer experience. BEST SPORTS FACILITY: There are lots of places in town to get your workout or play the sport you love, but the Campbell River Sportsplex has come out on top as the community’s favourite sports facility. If you need a pool or a rink, however, Strathcona Gardens has you covered. Lady Fit comes out of the nominations as the third finalist after saving the facility from closure when VI Fitness suddenly locked its doors last year.

The Campbell River arts scene is booming. At any given time, there are people taking an art class, learning new dance moves or browsing the creations of a local artisan at one of the many retailers or pop-up shows happening around the community. Let’s take a look behind the curtain at some of the best parts of the scene. BEST CRAFT FAIR: The Toy & Craft Show & Sale is arguably the largest one-weekend-only event in the community, and comes out on top of this category this year, followed by the the Pier Street Market downtown, one of the local favourites on Sundays throughout the summer and the Fair-Trade Market at Timberline, the only event of its kind in the region, focusing on unique and amazing global-fair-trade handcrafted items from all over the world. BEST LOCAL FREE EVENT: For the second year in a row, our readers have selected Spirit Square Concerts as the best free event on offer in town. The stage plays host to numerous musical and theatrical events all summer long, and they are all presented at no charge. Another new community favourite, the annual Chalk Festival – part of the city’s Live Streets series that runs each summer on Shoppers Row – and the always-popular Canada Day Fireworks round out this year’s finalists for the award. BEST LOCAL PAID EVENT: For only a couple of dollars for a whole weekend of fun – the proceeds from which ends up going back into the community – the annual Logger Sports and Highland Games events at Salmonfest come out on top as the best paid local event of the year by our readers. But while that event is only three memorable days long, there are also dozens of shows put on at the Tidemark Theatre and a season of home games played by the Campbell River Storm for the community to enjoy, as well, which round out the rest of the finalists for the category. We sure aren’t lacking for fun and artsy things to do here in Campbell River!

There are plenty of ways to get out into the wild here in Campbell River, but sometimes you want to get into a room to get your workout, as well, and there are lots of those, too. Between all the gyms, trainers, paths through the forest, guides who will take you out on the water and everything else you can do here, there’s no shortage of sports and recreational opportunities. Let’s check out what our readers think are the best ones. BEST BIKE TRAIL: There are seemingly endless places for people to explore on their bikes in this region, and even more pathways to go see them, but none are more popular with the readers of the Mirror than those in the Beaver Lodge Lands. If you want to get out of town (but just barely), the Snowden Trail System and Radar Hill just up Highway 28 a little ways are two other popular rides. BEST SWIMMING HOLE: McIvor Lake takes the prize from our readers this year from last year’s champion, the Oyster River Pot Holes, but those two locations are joined on this year’s finalist list by the Quinsam Pot Holes. Seems no matter which direction you head out of town, there’s a wonderful gem of a spot to go for a dip. BEST MARTIAL ARTS CENTRE: Parallel 50 Training Centre is the best place in Campbell River to get trained up to kick some you-knowwhat, but there are plenty of other options, as well, including the other finalists on this year’s list, Heart and Soul Muay Thai, the home of Sandra Bastian (who also earned a finalist nod in “Best Personal Trainer”) and Team Bastian (who also made the finalist list in “Best Local Sports Team”) as well as Pure Martial Arts and Fitness, which won last year’s Readers’ Choice Award.

BEST MUSIC TEACHER: Grant McLellan gets the nod from our readers this year as the best person to talk to if you’d like to add more music to your skillset, followed closely by last year’s winner Kolya Kowalchuk, who seems to have his conductor’s wand in just about everything musical around town, and Timberline band teacher David Johnson.
