THE

Grandma Lepp’s Sauerkraut Soup This is a heritage recipe passed on to me from my mother-in-law, who received it from her mother-in-law. A tangy and creamy soup rich in fermented sauerkraut, it was a New Year’s Day tradition served alongside fritters.

Ingredients • 2 medium-sized Lepp’s ham hocks

DISH

• 1 bunch flat Italian parsley, tied with string • 2 dried red chilies, placed in a metal spice ball if you have one • ½ ring Lepp’s farmer sausage, cut lengthwise into quarters, and then sliced into ¼ inch slices (optional, but Farmer Rob loves his meat!) • Salt and pepper to taste

• 1 cup heavy cream or whole milk. (I love to use Agassiz’s Farm House non-homogenized • 4 bay leaves whole milk in place of heavy cream as it Toss the ham hocks and bay leaves into doesn’t separate like a low-fat milk would a stockpot and cover them with 12 cups of if the soup comes to a boil. The Farmer and the Foodie It seems appropriate on Thanksgiving to express gratitude for an amazing woman. Farmer Rob’s mom, Elizabeth Lepp, peacefully passed into heaven last week, days after her 90th birthday. Looking to escape the harsh Saskatchewan winters, 14-year-old Elizabeth settled with her family on a dairy farm in Mt. Lehman in 1942. She attended Mt. Lehman school and MEI before leaving school to pick hops and berries to help support the family. My gracious and kind Mother-in-law thrived as a homemaker, not because it was a role assigned to her as a woman, but because she truly found great fulfillment in being able to cook, sew, garden, and preserve, lovingly sharing it with friends. She taught me to season generously, as when a recipe called for one bay leaf, she’d usually add four, and that everything could be made better by adding poultry seasoning! Having no written recipes to guide her as a new bride, she carefully watched her Motherin-law cook traditional Mennonite recipes

and then dashed home to record each step. She continually tweaked and tested recipes for her entire life. s recipe This month’s was one she learn n from her Mother-in-law and passed on to our family. Go to: For some www.leppfarmmarket.com unknown www.leppfarmmarket.com reason, it was only served on New Year’s, ely because likely their stored root vegetables were already depleted, but as a fermented food, this heritage recipe fits the top food trends of today! Thanks Mom, for your unconditional love and teaching me that a lovingly prepared meal is always Better When Shared.

HOME

Secrets to making your home look like you hired a design pro Photo spreads in home design magazines can be awe-inspiring. Quite often homeowners wish they could lift the looks right off the pages of magazines and transform their own homes into picture-perfect retreats. It takes an eye for design to pull a room together – even with inspiration – and make it both functional and attractive. While hiring an interior designer is one way to go, homeowners can use some of the tricks and techniques the designers employ to do a remarkably good job of improving the interiors of their homes without such help.

nille pillows next to a rustic side table. Figure out ways to incorporate a few different textures to add depth to the room.

Choose a big statement piece Many homeowners make the mistake of filling a room with several small pieces of furniture that only contribute to clutter. Instead, look for a statement piece, which can be a cabinet, armoire or chaise. Mix and match large and small elements for a sense of balance.

Be careful with colour Many high-end homes showcase neutral shades that are enhanced by pops of colour. If you like a rich, royal purple, leave room for other colours as well. Add touches of purple in vases, throw pillows and other accessories. Also, many designers work in shades of three for room colours. There may be one main colour for walls, another colour for larger accents, such as couches and chairs, and then a third colour that pops in accessories such as flowers, pillows and collectibles. These can be any colours, but the most muted tends to be the more abundant shade.

Embrace texture The colours used in a home can add impact, but designers often utilize various textures to create aesthetic appeal. A single colour scheme can be enhanced by varAdd a bit of bling space. A shiny table lamp, mir- a high-end feel. Reflective surious fabrics. Accessorize Finish the room with accessories and flowers. When placing and hanging knickknacks and wall art, odd-numbered groupings often look the most cohesive and interesting. HEALTH

Osteoarthritis: Why it MATTERS feels like bone on bone Osteoarthritis is a condition that causes many Canadians pain. As the cartilage on the bone breaks down, the joint’s movement is no longer smooth and easy. This creates more friction, heating up the joint and causing pain and swelling. Osteoarthritis is not just something that happens to older athletes, but can also arise from simple wear and tear on the joint, as in the sore knees of the post office carrier who has spent a career carrying the mail, walking hours every day, the shoulder pain of the mechanic who has used wrenches every day, or the wrist pain of anyone who has worked with a computer for many years. anti-inflammatory medication, In my clinic, I have found acuacupuncture, massage, chiro- puncture and supplements to Commonly used treatments practic adjustments, or nutri- be complementary treatments, for OA can be over-the-counter tional supplements. not only to address acute pain

but to offer continuing relief for OA symptoms. Acupuncture creates a smooth flow of energy into the arthritic joint and increases blood supply to the area to reduce swelling. Supplements like glucosamine sulfate have been proven to help reduce inflammation by creating a lubricant in the joint space. Recent studies are even showing the benefits of PRP on OA in knees. Those with osteoarthritis don’t necessarily have to live in constant pain. There are treatments that can help and they don’t have to come in the form of a pill.
