There doesn’t have to be a large time commitment as often an hour will be plenty of time to get the job done. We need help with things such as parking attendant, customer service, set up, tear down, equipment maintenance, kids table just to name a few. Fresh Mushroom Soup The earthy flavour of mushrooms shine through in this soup. Serves 6 Compliments Chef Lesley Stav Ingredients 2 Tbsp unsalted butter 2 Tbsp olive oil 1 medium onion, diced* 4 cloves garlic, minced* 3/4 lb fresh mushrooms, cleaned, trimmed and sliced (about 4-1/2 cups)* • Nutritional Sample Size based on six servings • Calories (kcal) : 160 • Fat Calories (kcal): 90 • Fat (g): 11 • Saturated Fat (g): 4 • Polyunsaturated Fat (g): 1

2 Tbsp fresh thyme leaves* 1/2 tsp sea salt and pepper 4 cups chicken or vegetable broth 1/4 cup whipping cream 3 Tbsp fortified wine** 1 Tbsp soy sauce • • • • • •

Preparation Melt butter and olive oil in a large stockpot over medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook until it begins to soften, about 4 minutes. Stir in garlic, cook for 1 minute. Add mushrooms, thyme, salt and pepper. Cook until the mushrooms become limp, 2 to 4 minutes.

Add broth, scraping up any browned bits in the pot. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, and then reduce heat to maintain a simmer. Cook until mushrooms are tender, 7 to 10 minutes.

Remove from heat and cool slightly. Transfer half of the soup to a blender and process until smooth and return to the pot. Stir in whipping cream, fortified wine, and soy sauce. Season to taste with salt and pepper and gently reheat. Comox Valley Mushrooms

Comox Valley Mushrooms is a family operated craft mushroom farm in Courtenay specializing in cultivating gourmet mushrooms. Galina, Stoyan and their two sons moved to the Comox Valley two years ago with dreams of leaving their fast-paced careers in the Lower Mainland and starting a new adventure. Stoyan became interested in mushrooms while listening to a TED talk by Paul Stamets on how mushrooms can save the world. With more research he quickly realized the crucial role fungi serve in ecosystems worldwide. Since then he has travelled as far as China to learn about the finer points of mushrooms and mycelium.

In the summer of 2018 Comox Valley Mushrooms produced their first test crop of Oyster mushrooms. Less then a year later Comox Valley Mushrooms had a fully operational

onsite lab and fruiting rooms producing multiple strains of choice gourmet mushrooms.

In the controlled conditions of their lab, Comox Valley Mushrooms inoculate sterilized substrate consisting of hard wood sawdust (alder, maple and oak) that is supplemented with soya husk, wheat bran and oyster shells, depending on the variety of mushroom. After a 2-6 weeks incubation period, the mycelium fully colonizes the substrate and is ready to fruit. The inoculated bags are then transported to the fruiting room where a specific combination of temperature, humidity, light and fresh air encourage mushroom growth. 7-14 days later the mushrooms are ready to eat.

Merville man loses everything in fatal fire Scott Stanfield Record staff

A Merville pensioner lost his common-law wife and wound up in hospital with smoke inhalation following a Tuesday fire at his apartment building.

Len Brown, 76, lived in the top floor of the Hillview Apartments, which went up in flames around 11:40 a.m., Oct. 8.

Amber Foster, who has lived in the bottom of

the complex for seven years with her mother, Laura Mitchell, was outside the building when the fire broke out. She heard screaming from a neighbouring unit, then saw smoke billowing from the top floor.

“I grabbed a fire extinguisher (from a bystander) and ran upstairs, and ran into the fire and started going as quick as I could,” Foster said. “I could see the fire coming from underneath the bedroom, and I knew that Charlotte had not made it. But I knew that Len was still

in there.”

A number of neighbours appeared on scene, and helped Foster retrieve Brown from his unit.

“I could hear him, so we started screaming for Len. It was absolutely horrifying what I saw. Finally, we saw his head peek out. We managed to drag him out the rest of the way, and then drag him down the stairs.”

Foster said the fire started in Brown’s apartment.

Comox’s Nauta eliminated from Great Canadian Baking Show Mike Chouinard Record Staff

It was a sweet ride for a few weeks for Comox’s Andrea Nauta on The Great Canadian Baking Show, but it came to an end on the third episode of season three.

The week’s baking assignments involved bread, which, as she had admitted, was her weak point when it comes to baking.

“I’m not a bread person, so it’s nerve-wracking,” she said at the outset of the episode.

For the opening Signature challenge, the contestants, now down to eight from the original 10, had to make povitica, a yeasted sweet bread from eastern Europe made in rolls and layered.

Nauta concocted a “mocha coco loco” that made use of her passion for coffee as a flavour, and things seemed to turn out relatively smoothly.

In the Technical challenge, the bakers had to put together a brioche à tête the “old-fashioned” way with no mixers in a little under three hours, making sure to fuse the head to the top of each brioche. The judges felt Nauta’s batch was a little dry but had good flavour, and she finished in the middle of the pack.

The final challenge, the Showstopper, required Nauta and her peers to create a bread sculpture using two different yeast-leavened breads with different colours and flavours in 4.5 hours. The idea was to have them go “Michelangelo” on the dough.

“Bread is so finicky, so anything can happen,” she said.

She used three types of dough to sculpt a bouquet of flowers from bread, but it was the vase portion that did not quite turn out as planned. The dough, she said, was not shaping

how she wanted and ended up a little stumpy.

The judges felt the vase as the base was a bit undercooked and doughy.

“This is the week that I was dreading the most,” she said at the end of the episode.

Following the airing, she told the Comox Valley Record her worry about the bread challenge.

“I knew it was going to be the one thing [that

could eliminate me early],” she said.

She had practised similar bread sculptures before but did not bring along her own moulds, so she had to fashion one from scratch when she went to Ontario for filming.

Having to face the time constraints and stiff competition too provided an obstacle for the Showstopper. She saw plenty of possibilities, but the challenge was to pick one that she could complete in time.

“It was hard to come up with ideas for the Showstopper,” she said. “I had so many ideas in my head.”

Still, she was thrilled to have the opportunity to be on the show, as she had always loved cooking shows from when she was a youngster.

In a way, the experience was a chance to live out a dream and to make some close friends along the way.

“My baking family is what I call them,” she said. “It’s a lifetime friendship that we’ll always share…. We all shared an amazing experience.”

North Island College nursing students hosting an all-candidates forum Wednesday North Island College bachelor of science in nursing students are hosting an all-candidates forum for North Island-Powell River, Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Stan Hagen Theatre at NIC’s Comox Valley campus.

The event is free, open to the public and will be moderated.

The students are hosting the event as part of their NUR-404: Engaging in Leadership course.

“We wanted to encourage the public and, in particular, students to engage in the 2019 federal election,” said Lydia Hardy, one of the student organizers of the event.

“Students have a significant stake in the future of our country. This event will provide a platform to bring student voices forward to our candidates and present people with an opportunity to connect with their candidates and make an informed decision when voting.”

All seven candidates running for the North Island – Powell River riding will be taking part (listed alphabetically): Rachel Blaney, NDP; Mark de Bruijn, Green Party; Shelley Downey, Conservative Party; Carla Neal, Marxist-Leninist; Brian Rundle, People’s Party of Canada; Peter Schwarzhoff, Liberal Party; Glen Staples, independent.

“We’ve been speaking with students at NIC and gathering questions on the most popular topics we’re hearing about from them,” said Hardy.

Members of the public will also be able to submit questions on the night of the event.

The final questions will be chosen by relevance to the federal election and the number of similar questions submitted on each topic.

The event will also feature a meet and greet with candidates before the forum, starting at 6 p.m.

The last opportunity to submit questions will be at 6:50 p.m.

Clean air group doesn’t buy clean wood pitch Scott Stanfield Record staff

The Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association of Canada is promoting a transition to clean wood heating. In a presentation to Courtenay council Oct. 7, board member Jason VanGarderen said wood heat is affordable, and secure in terms of hydro interruptions.

“Often when we’re considering ways to address air quality, new wood stoves and appliances become a target,” said VanGarderen, general manager of Concorde Distributing Inc. “It’s thought, ‘let’s ban these appliances and we’ll see immediate improvements.’ We’re suggesting that by banning the new appliances, you probably won’t see much improvement. In the last 20 years, especially in the last five years, the technology in wood stoves has improved drastically.”

“Wood burning is the low-hanging fruit at this point,” Chris Bowen of Pioneer Fireplace said in a separate presentation. “You can see it, smell it, and anything that can be done to clean it up would be helpful to everybody.”

VanGarderen said dry, seasoned wood “makes a world of difference.”

According to Breathe Clean Air Comox Valley, dry wood and new stoves are not a solution to the air quality issue.

“Reducing pollution by a small percentage is not what we need,” group co-ordinator Jennell Ellis said. “We need much more dramatic reduction, and the only way to get that is to move people away from wood heating in populated areas.”

She said studies indicate most people run stoves four to five times above certification levels.

“What a stove is certified for is not how it’s used in the real world,” Ellis said, noting a UK study showed one eco-certified stove equals 18

diesel cars running, in terms of fine particulate matter.

Part of the issue is comparing new and old stoves, but Ellis said when new stoves are compared to diesel cars or other heating sources, “they obviously pollute far more than any other home heating source we could possibly use, exponentially so.

“We have to stop comparing old and new stoves, and start comparing wood stoves to other heating sources. There’s just too much variation…Yes, you could move everybody from old stoves to new stoves, it would get better. But if you moved all those same people from old stoves to other sources of heat, it would get exponentially better. And save a lot more lives.”

Bowen said the cost of wood appliances is much less than other appliances.

“A move to push people away from wood is disproportionately affecting low-income people,” he said. “Also the cost of the fuel itself is less — electricity being the most expensive, wood is the least expensive. Using high-efficiency stoves, you use less wood than a masonry fireplace or an old, inefficient fireplace.”

At present rates, Bowen said a home can be heated with wood for $750-$1,000 a year.

Ellis, however, said the cost of a gas furnace or heat pump is coming down, and rebates can potentially reach $4,000. She also notes the price of wood has jumped in recent years.

“It was well below $200, and last year wood was selling for $250.”

Fire: Crowdfunding page set up for displaced tenants

Trial date set for man charged with school fire

A trial date of Dec. 4 has been set for the man charged with arson in relation to a fire at the Hornby Island Community School.

Police said a 25-year-old male was charged in relation to the incident on Aug. 26, 2018 which destroyed a large part of the school.

To fully extinguish the fire, crews enlisted

“He was in the fire for probably about 15 minutes.”

Foster was also hospitalized for smoke inhalation.

She and Mitchell are among the displaced tenants of the eight-unit building who have been put up at the Travelodge Courtenay.

“Charlotte was an awesome person,” Foster said. “Lovely woman. She would help out anyone.”

Mitchell considered 64-yearold Charlotte to be her sister.

“She saved him (Len) because she screamed for him to wake up,” Mitchell said.

“She was my best friend in the world. We always used to talk about being sisters because we’re so much alike…I talked to the coroner, and I asked him, ‘Please tell me she didn’t burn to death.’ He said, ‘No, she wouldn’t have. It was smoke first.’ I’m grateful for that, if you can be grateful for anything.”

She’s also grateful that her daughter wasn’t hurt while she tried to extinguish the fire.

“I had to keep grabbing her arm, and she wouldn’t stop,” Mitchell said. “Her face was all black with soot. It was hopeless.”

“He’s really scared right now,” she said. “We’re the only family he has. He’s a really nice, nice man. He’d give you the shirt off his back.”

“It’s really tough because he’s like my father,” Foster added. “He’s having a really hard time.”

A top-floor tenant, 12-yearold Kohen Ballance, was at school when the fire broke out.

“I was in shock at what happened,” Kohen said. “I saw my mom. She was crying. I

couldn’t take it, she couldn’t take it.”

They, too, are at the Travelodge.

“A lot of water damage in my room,” Kohen said. “Most of the burn was in the living room, and some in my room.”

Foster said government is paying for three days’ accommodation at the hotel.

“We also have the Red Cross coming to help us out.”

Federal candidates invited to address crowd at annual Persons Day Lunch

All Courtenay-Alberni and North Island-Powell River candidates in the Oct 21. federal election have been invited to address the fourth annual Persons Day Lunch on Oct. 18 in Courtenay.

Each first will respond to a pre-question: “if elected, what would you do to reduce gender inequities in Canada?” Then, candidates will have an opportunity to present their platforms, respond to a general Q and A, meet voters and distribute election materials.

Women were acknowledged as “persons” in Canada approximately a decade after most had been granted the right to vote. This status permits greater participation in public life, including appointments to the Senate and senior judicial levels. However, Canada has a low global gender equity ranking, and in the Comox Valley financial wage inequities have increased since 2010. According to Amnesty International (Canada) other acute issues include: lack of affordable housing, skyrocketing childcare costs, precarious work and low wages, a lack of personal autonomy, persistently high rates of gender-based violence and reduced funding for women’s organizations.

The Oct. 18 Person’s Day lunch celebrates

City of Courtenay Public Works Services will be flushing water mains in part of East Courtenay. The work zone will include Comox Road starting at the K’ómoks First Nation boundary, to sections of the Old Island Highway, Ryan Road, Back Road, Headquarters Road, Vanier Drive, and surrounding areas.

Flushing is planned on weekdays between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. from Oct. 15-31.

During flushing hours, households and commercial properties in the area may experience temporary, short-term water pressure fluctuations, along with cloudy water or discolouration.

While flushing will occur over a large area during this time period, water to individual properties should only be affected for a limited time, typically less than an hour.

Activities such as laundry and dishwashing should be scheduled outside of flushing hours. To clear discoloured water, run cold water taps. If after one hour the water still does not clear, contact Public Works Services for assistance at 250-338-1525, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. or the after-hours emergency line at 250-334-2947.

Uni-directional flushing (UDF) involves the strategic use of valves and hydrants to isolate sections of water mains. Through this method, crews are able to achieve higher water velocity, which in turn increases effectiveness and reduces water use by 40 per cent compared to conventional flushing methods.

UDF enhances overall water quality within the water distribution system, and improves system operations by reducing turbidity, re-

Donation in table teapots help offset overhead expenses. Small table settings provide opportunities to talk informally with candidates and other attendees.

This lunch is an opportunity to have some fun, to highlight women’s issues prior to an important election, and to learn more about our shared unique “herstory.” Attendees will leave more informed about gender-based issues and perhaps become more engaged in voting a few days later.

Don’t be swayed by a sign

M

any communities have either enacted or beefed up by-laws on candidate signs but still, they pop up like plastic mushrooms whenever election time rolls around.

This is surely a profitable time for local sign-makers, and while we don’t want to deny them a business surge, it would be nice to see this holdover from a bygone era fade away.

Plastic straws are disappearing, communities are banning plastic bags, but still, plastic election signs seem to be exempt.

Many candidates do preserve their signs from election to election, but there are always some lost each election to age, wind, weather and vandals.

And even so, the sheer number posted by some candidates is excessive, to say the least. It’s not hard to find a spot, usually in a park alongside a busy road, where the line of signs stretch out, with each candidate trying to drown the others out with sheer numbers.

But does it mean anything when it comes to voting day and seducing voters? Is anyone going to contemplate the ballot and put their X next to the candidate with the prettiest or most signs?

Let’s hope not. Name branding may be a great way for big companies to keep their names in the front of your mind when shopping, but it’s a terrible way to chose some who is going to help run your country.

Can you imagine a candidate showing up at your door and simply repeating their name, over and over?

Many voters made up their minds about who they are voting for long before the writ was dropped — some voting the same way all their life.

Others are more strategic about their vote, casting it where they do the most good. Signs aren’t going to change these people’s minds.

It’s only the undecided that a candidate has a chance of swaying one way or another. They need convincing that your party is on the right path, and that you will be a worthwhile representative in Ottawa.

Signs don’t do that.

Berwick Comox Valley has won the 2019 ICAA NuStep Beacon Award, which recognizes and honours the Top 25 ‘Best in Wellness’ senior living communities in North America.

Berwick Comox Valley is among those recognized as best-in-class for successfully fostering a wellness-centred environment to benefit all who live and work in their community. The award was created as a joint effort between International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) and NuStep, LLC, a major manufacturer of recumbent cross-trainers used in healthcare, senior living and fitness, already mentioned above.

Horner said the Conservatives recognize there is a need for “a national strategy to get accessible healthcare, to get GPs, to get nurse practitioners, in our communities, and in the rural communities that make up Courtenay-Alberni.”

On childcare, Wood said the Green Party’s proposal of a guaranteed livable income would go a long way toward making childcare affordable for all.

Biley said childcare should be considered a right for all, and should be provided free of charge for everybody who needs it.

Gowans said the Liberals are committing to an additional 250,000 childcare spaces in Canada, as well as 15 weeks’ maternity leave for foster parents, and adoptive parents.

Horner said the Conservatives will eliminate all tax on maternity and paternity leave, as well as tax credits that will help families.

“Our whole platform is about putting more money in families’ pockets so that they can have more money for things like childcare,” he said.

Johns said childcare issues are affecting employers and employees alike. “[We] need $10 a day childcare. In Quebec they did it, and 70,000 people went back to work,” he said. “Our commitment is $10 billion over four years, and creating 500,000 safe and affordable childcare spaces.”

When asked about poverty reduction plans, Gowans pointed to the Liberals’ creation of the Canada Child Benefit, which he said has brought 16,000 children in this riding alone “out of poverty, and 300,000 across the country.”

Horner commended the Liberals for the introduction of the CCB, saying “it’s the one

thing that the Trudeau Liberals did that I fully support,” and added that the Conservatives would not tamper with that program. He said the Conservatives would “increase spending to public healthcare and social programs by three per cent every year.”

On climate, and addressing a sustainable green economy, Johns said it would take a collaborative effort.

“No one party is going to solve this thing.

We have to work together,” he said.

Wood said the Green Party envisions zero net emissions by 2050.

“The planet is warming up too much. We are losing glaciers, we are losing ice caps, and we really need to start curbing our fossil fuel emissions,” he said.

Biley said the transition to a greener economy should be put into the hands of the workers

themselves.

“They will figure it out. We collectively have the intelligence and the ability to figure out how to do this transition, as long as it is in our hands, and not in the hands of those who see … how they can profit from it.”

Gowans said we need to set reachable targets, in five-year increments.

“We are going to preserve Canada,” he said of the Liberal plan. “Twenty-five per cent of the ocean will be protected by 2025. When we came into power in 2015 that number was one per cent. It is currently 14. We are going to do the same on land, and preserve 25 per cent of Canada’s land by 2025. Both targets will move to 30 per cent by 2030.”

Horner alluded to Canada only accounting for less than two per cent of all global emissions, and unless other countries get on-board,

Canadian efforts will be marginal at best.

“Canada could be carbon neutral tomorrow and China will continue to burn dirty coal.

They represent 50 per cent of all emissions.

That doesn’t mean we don’t do anything. The key is to export and develop Canadian green technology that can displace dirtier options globally.”

All candidates were in favour of a national school food program to ensure all children are properly fed. Other questions included whether parties would consider tax incentives to help with rental housing builds; homeownership affordability; the possibility of reviewing the tax code; addressing the debt; balancing of the budget; trade options with China, and the Asian-Pacific gateway; and apprenticeship program plans.

Shamrock Farm is once again swinging open its gate this October to welcome the community to reconnect with their roots. The final harvest of corn has ripened, plump apples are being plucked from trees and pumpkins in a riot of colours dot the fields.

Shamrock Farm is one of the few remaining heritage farms on Vancouver Island that’s open to the public. Because it’s a working farm, Shamrock Farm’s focus is on food and sustainability. This year more than 40 varieties of heirloom pumpkins were planted, including Long Island Cheese and Winter Luxury - both of which are excellent for baking; Marina di Chioggia, Galeux D’Eysines, Queensland Blue, and Autumn Frost. Many of these pumpkins aren’t available anywhere else. In addition, the Farrell family decided to plant double the amount of carving pumpkins as in 2018, so there will be a huge selection of all shapes and sizes right up until Halloween!

More than just pumpkins, Shamrock Farm also produces a number of farm-made food and self-care items. By growing King, Spartan, Liberty, Granny Smith and Crab apples, as well as pears, fresh-pressed pasteurized juice from Shamrock’s own apples is the perfect autumn beverage. This year they’ve also created a sweet and tangy Crab apple-pear juice.

Comox Valley CFUW member among the 100 ‘Notable Women’ As part of celebrating 100 years since it was founded in 1919, the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) has identified 100 women across Canada to be named as Notable Women.

The local chapter of CFUW, Comox Valley, nominated one of its founding members, Eleanor Phillips.

CFUW is a non-partisan, voluntary, self-funded organization with over 90 clubs located in every province across Canada. Since its founding in 1919, CFUW has worked to improve the status of women and to promote human rights, public education, social justice and

Commission for UNESCO. CFUW also sends a delegation to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.

The Comox Valley branch is proud to have its member, Eleanor Phillips, chosen to be honoured as one of the 100 Canadian members of CFUW.

Every year, across Canada the CFUW chapters award close to $1 million for women to help them pursue their individual studies. This year

Always interested in theatre and the arts, Phillips spearheaded the club’s initial fundraising efforts for an annual bursary, organizing concerts

featuring a renowned children’s performer.

Furthermore, she encouraged club members to volunteer at the Sid Williams Theatre and for the North Island Festival for the Performing Arts.

Thanks to her efforts the club continues to annually award two $1,500 bursaries.

She is a retired elementary school teacher, who has celebrated her 90th birthday, yet she continues to teach and coach speech arts and many of her students have won provincial honours. She is an amazing woman who inspires the best in all those around her.

Music writer speaks to ElderCollege about classical music Mike Chouinard Record Staff

If you think classical is only yesterday’s music, you might want to think again – and maybe think about attending an upcoming lecture by David Gordon Duke.

Duke is a renowned music scholar and writer. He is also a composer in his own right. He holds degrees in historical musicology from UBC, the University of North Carolina, and UVIC. He contributes articles on music to the Vancouver Sun, as well as the American Record Guide and Classical Voice, North America. He is a faculty member of Vancouver Community College’s School of Music.

His Oct. 20 talk will focus on how classical music represents a “shared heritage of musical masterworks from the past,” but at the same time with an expanding repertoire, changes in attitudes around performance and new technology, the

“We’re interested in laymen that are not yet classical music fans but would like to be,” he says. “We’re, of course, interested in people who are already converts.”

Early in his talk, he will discuss the new ways people can be exposed to more music.

“Through changes in technology, we have just open access to a world of great performances with the click of a mouse,” he says.

In all, Duke says he has about eight topics to touch on during the course of his lecture. He also wants to dismiss the elitist myths around classical music, even down to what people should wear for a night out, all in the hopes of showing the relevance of

The talk is part of the Discovery Series for ElderCollege.

The regular Saturday morning lectures, which focus on life on Canada’s East Coast, have begun, but Duke kicks off the new series this month. The

Discovery Series is intended to provide an in-depth exposure to liberal arts or political science subjects, and they will be presented by experts in the field such as Duke.

“It’s quite new for us to do that,” says Michael Syer, ElderCollege chair.

The event is open to Comox Valley ElderCollege members.

It takes place at the Stan Hagen Theatre in Courtenay on Sunday, Oct. 20 from 3 to 5 p.m. People can register for tickets online at nicconnect. nic.bc.ca. seasons on record. In 2017, wildfires dominated the headlines, over 200 fires setting records for the largest total area burnt and the largest number of total evacuees in one fire season.

In and around the towns of 100 Mile House, Ashcroft, Cache Creek, Princeton and Williams Lake, nearly 10,000 people received instructions to evacuate immediately, and some of them would be unable to return to their homes for months.

But when the evacuation order came, not everyone left. Both Czajkowski and Reid stayed behind to protect their properties, animals, and livelihoods. Living in remote areas, they both knew that their homes would be of low priority to officials when firefighting resources were deployed.

Captured by Fire alternates between these two authors’ dramatic first-person accounts of their experience throughout the summer. As lightning strikes started new fires and strong winds fanned existing ones, alerts fluctuated and even the firefighters pulled out. Both authors eventually had to decide: when is it time to go?

Their chronicle makes a fascinating and at times harrowing read for anyone interested in the ongoing wildfire problem in this province, and what it’s like to live through it up close.

Nanaimo Big Band playing at the Av If you’re into big band music, this is the night for you.

Since 1967, the Nanaimo Musicians’ Association Big Band has promoted the performance of big band music through jazz concerts and ballroom dances in the mid-Island area. Thursday, Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at The Avalanche Bar, it’s our turn to hear why this 17-piece band has thrived that long, and how it has contributed so significantly to the local, regional and international jazz scene.

During its half-century, the band has given emerging talents their first step up to the professional scene and has awarded tens of thousands of dollars in music scholarships. Proceeds from Thursday’s show will provide scholarships for emerging talent from the mid-Island area.

A few of the band’s celebrated alumni are Diana Krall, Phil Dwyer, and Ingrid and Christine Jensen. Three years ago, saxophonist Connor Stewart left the band to pursue a career in New Orleans and tours around the world. Shortly after, award-winning high school altoist, Kenton Dick, who was invited to play at the prestigious Monterey Jazz Festival, left to study at Berklee in Boston.

Instrumentally, the show will include Afro-Cuban, swing, blues and contemporary music. Compositions will include numbers

by Basie, Rogers/Hart, Gershwin/Riddle and Porter/Crotty.

Admission is $10 for members, $12 for non-members. The Avalanche Bar & Grill is located at 275 8th St., Courtenay.

The Courtenay Fish and Game Protective Association is having its Fall Gun Show Oct. 20, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the main Club building at Comox Lake.

This is a buy, sell and trade event mainly involving firearms and hunting items but you never know for sure what will be there.

The kitchen will be open for breakfast and lunch.

Entrance fee is $5 for men 18 and over. Ladies and those under 18 are free.

Come on out and see what’s there, have something to eat or just enjoy the view of Comox Lake and the glacier.

A motley crew of local racers have been putting up some fantastic results recently.

All named Derek, they have dubbed themselves the 4 Amigos. These amigos span a broad range of age categories, from 35-39 all the way to the 70-74 age group.

The youngest of the group is Derek Vinge, who recently qualified for the 2020 World Multi-Sports for X-Triathlon in Almere, Amsterdam and also for the 2020 Boston Marathon.

“The last time I ran Boston, Derek V. was still in high school!” Derek Richmond quipped.

Derek Brenchley recently won his age category at the Edmonton Marathon, clocking a stellar time of 3:10. He will now turn his attention to the Victoria Marathon and Seattle Marathon, as he chases a sub 3:05 marathon finish.

Triathlon in Edmonton.

Derek Richmond has recently focussed on sprint duathlons, which combine running and biking. One major change from many other events is that bike drafting is actually allowed, which puts a whole new spin on the event. He recently qualified for 2020 Worlds Duathlon Sprint, taking place in Almere, Amsterdam. Richmond has represented Canada on a number of occasions, and has been a member of the national team for over 20 years.

Another outstanding recent performance came from Les Disher at the Skagit Flats Marathon, who won his age group, crushing the next competitor by a margin of 50 minutes.

Locally, the next big event is the Perseverance Trail Run Oct. 27. This is a fantastic event that includes a 3k cross-country romp and an 11k mountain run. The Perseverance Trail Run is also a fundraiser for the Cumberland Community Forest Society. More information is available online.

Comox Doctors support youth to Be Active Every Day As of 2017, an estimated 30 per cent of Canadian children five to 17 are overweight or obese.

The 2018 Participaction report card has a simple message: ‘Only 35 per cent of five- to 17- year-olds are reaching their recommended physical activity levels’.

Through the public health campaign Be Active Every Day, Doctors of BC provides doctors the opportunity to show kids that getting active is fun and that it’s easy to get into the habit

every day of the year.

Doctors of BC has long recognized the importance of encouraging kids to be more active and make healthier lifestyle choices. In partnership with local elementary schools, Be Active Every Day supports doctors around the province who, during the month of October each year, lead students in activity challenges to teach them about the importance of good health, nutrition and fitness – and to turn

healthy choices into health habits.

Now in its eighth year, Be Active Every Day continues to see doctors and resident doctors with the help of nurse practitioners, divisions and athletes across the province to get kids moving. This year, doctors in Comox/Courtneay are issuing the challenge to more than 1,400 kids in 12 schools. The Comox Valley Division of Family Practice, a non-profit society representing primary care providers of the Comox Valley, is supporting the campaign by giving away prizes to participating children.

First prize is a mountain bike, second prize a chance to win one of three scooters, and third prize a chance to win one of eight helmets.

The challenge begins the week of Oct. 7 with a school visit, and ends with a follow-up visit the final week of October.

With doctors leading students through the activity challenge, kids can learn about the importance of good health, nutrition and fitness from a medical perspective. The goal is to make a lasting impact on children and help them turn healthy choices into healthy habits.

A contingent of local trail runners took on the challenging Whistler Alpine Meadows (WAM) races last month in Whistler. There were a number different races including 25km, 110k and 100 miles.

Brad Crowe took on the daunting 100-mile race which included two ascents of Whistler mountain and one of Blackcomb for a total elevation gain of 9,500 metres or 31,500 feet — higher than the peak of Mt. Everest. The WAM website describes the 100-mile race as, “Hands down, all at once the most stunning ultra in Canada and the most challenging race in the country; in fact it ranks right up there as one of the toughest 100’s on the continent.”

The racers had the pleasure of running 11 km longer than advertised for a total of 171 km. That, combined with running at altitude, made what race director Gary Robbins warned was an extremely difficult “graduate level” course that challenged even the most experienced Ultra runners. Of 108 starters, 78 finished. In spite of the gruelling terrain and some physical ailments, Crowe finished in 35 hours and a solid 31st-place finish in his first 100-mile race. He describes two of the highlights as seeing the moon crest as he hit the peak of Whistler the first time, and seeing the sunrise as he summited the second time. But the top highlight was seeing the finish line.

RASOR, Norma Jean

November 23, 1946 – September 5, 2019

November 17, 1924 – October 8, 2019 On a beautiful, crisp, fall evening, at The Views Hospice in Comox BC, Muriel slipped away to join her predeceased husband (April 8, 2018) Lawrence (Larry) of 75 years.

Their 3 children, Carolyn (Bob), David (Danielle), and Dale were there to see her o.

Born in 1924 to George and Bessie Hall in Surrey England, Muriel was an only child who loved to ride her horse (Mickey) or her bicycle (no name) as fast as they would go.

She was also the leader (read “boss�) of a group of Scottish Highland dancers who performed in exhibitions around the local area.

She grew into a true English beauty, who caught the eye of a handsome Canadian Soldier who was stationed close to where she lived. They married in 1942 and lived in England where they had their ďŹ rst daughter Carolyn in 1946.

After Larry was shipped back to Canada at the end of the war, Muriel and Carolyn joined him in Oliver BC, where their second child, daughter Dale was born.

After moving north to Terrace for new opportunities, they completed their family with the birth of their son David.

After establishing a successful Real Estate and Insurance business (L.E. Pruden LTD.), Larry added the role of Magistrate, Coroner and Small Claims Court Judge to his duties. Although she missed her family terribly, Muriel adapted to the West Coast lifestyle admirably without losing her sense of style, that touch of “British class�, and most importantly her cheeky sense of humour and quick wit. She took enormous pride in her role of wife and mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She was smart, beautiful, funny and one of a kind.

We will miss her more than words can say, however there is some solace in knowing how happy she will be dancing with “her Larry� once again.

She is survived by her extended family, daughter Carolyn (Bob) and their daughter Allison (Brendan and Cole), her son Brian (wife Natalie and sons Nathan and Mathis). Son David (Danielle and their sons Ryan (Jessie) and Trevor). Her daughter Dale will miss their daily drives and singing together to the old standards and Vera Lynne.

Well done Muriel. A long life well lived. Dance on.

On a sunny morning day, Norma Jean Rasor passed away in her sleep at the North Island Hospital Comox Valley, September 5, 2019.

Norma was born in Denver, Colorado, was a 4H Club member, won the 1963 National “Little Britchesâ€? Rodeo Senior Pole Bending competition with her horse Trixy, and was the School Valedictorian. Her speech called “Buildersâ€? began with “All over the world a great amount of building has been done in the years since World War Twoâ€? and ended with â€œâ€Śso it is essential that world peace, democracies, and character be built on the bedrocks of freedom, brotherly love, and the golden rule.â€? Norma lived and practiced her own words throughout her life.

She excelled in school; she listened and danced to rock & roll and country & western music; she loved her flower gardens; she was always ready to play games; she followed hockey every year; she watched westerns; she listened to what politicians had to say and she always cast her vote; she had multiple creative projects on the go; and she was always quick to smile and laugh.

Norma loved cars. When she had saved enough money, she asked her Dad to buy the 1954 green Bel-Air Chevy she had spotted for sale and bring it home for her – she then had to wait a year until she turned sixteen and could get her licence before she could drive it. Her favourite car was her 1959 Chevrolet Impala Sports Coupe; the Beetle, the Volvo, the Falcon, the Nova, the Duster, the Corolla were all fun, but that Sports Coupe was the one she loved best!

She married Jim Rasor in 1965, whom she had known since grade school, and immigrated with him and her son James in 1970 to Smithers, British Columbia, in their Ford Falcon van named Bombadil with their dog Sasha and their cat Galadriel. The family lived in two log cabins“off the grid�surrounded by mountains, snow, horses, dogs, and cats for several years before moving to Vancouver Island in 1974.

She worked at Georgia Boys Barbeque doing dishes, as carhop at Oscar’s Drive-in, volunteered as a Candy Striper at the Fitzsimmons Army Hospital, worked as a Long-Distance Operator and Defence Communications Stenographer for Mountain States Telephone Company, and worked as a librarian at the University of Northern Colorado. In British Columbia she worked for Robinsons Store, Hudson Bay Company, and Overwaitea. She worked for Canada Safeway for over thirty years until she retired.

Family, friends, horses, and cats formed a big part of Norma’s love of life. She always had a cat and she was a prolific writer of cards and letters to friends and family, of poetry and verse, and letters to editors. Keeping in touch with friends and family was important to her and her Christmas and birthday packages were legendary and a joy to open.

She cared. She loved. She was a fabulous, wonderful mom. She was a great friend. She truly kept the Spirit of Christmas all year. She believed in letting people live their lives and she believed in honesty.

Norma was predeceased by her parents, Josephine Shultz and Roland Shultz, and her sister Marilynn Jeremiasen. She is survived by her ex-husband Jim Rasor, her son James Rasor and his wife Jennifer Rasor, her brother Richard Shultz and his wife Bev Shultz, her sister Julie Reynolds, her cousin Carol Luzovich and her husband Gary Luzovitch, and her brother-in-law Bob Jeremiasen.

Per Norma`s wishes, no memorial service will be held, however, if you are able to do so, donations to the Comox Valley & District Branch of the BC SPCA in Norma Rasor’s memory would be greatly appreciated.

Norma’s favourite season was Spring and she loved flowers and she loved sunshine - if you are a gardener, plant some flowers for Norma during the spring seasons – she would like that!

An endless cord of love will link us heart to heart.

Dr. Clayton Grant Phillips (Carl) January 8, 1930 – September 25, 2019 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Clayton Grant Phillips, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Carl passed away peacefully at Glacier View Lodge, in Courtenay, British Columbia on September 25, 2019.

Carl was married to his wife of 66 years Catherine (Kay). He was an extraordinary father, devoted and loved. He will be missed and cherished always by his four daughters, Sandie (David), Elizabeth (Chris), Bev (Tom) and Chris. His nine grandchildren: Kimberly, Wendy, Rod, Rory, Ashlynn, Katie, Kim, Graeme and Jamie, all have a very special place in their hearts for “Papa�. He was very proud of his five great grandchildren: Kaydree, Breanna, Keagan, Greta and Sonny who have loving memories of their “Papa G�.

Carl raised his family in High River, Alberta. The eternal educator, he helped his four daughters with all levels of their education. He had a thirst for knowledge and he loved to share it. He was an active grandfather and great grandfather, present at hockey, wrestling, and soccer, school concerts, and birthday parties.

Professionally, Carl Phillips was a Chiropractor and Naturopathic Physician.

He practiced for 50 years, an achievement of which he was very proud. He held executive positions with the Canadian Chiropractic Association and the Canadian Naturopathic Association. Carl received numerous awards from his professional associations and has a scholarship named for him at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto, Ontario.

Carl’s wishes were for no service to be held. If desired, memorial donations in his name may be made to the Mountain Avian Rescue Society (MARS).

Our family wishes to express our deepest gratitude to the staff of the Special Care Unit at Glacier View Lodge for their excellent care, compassion and kindness.

ROBERTSON, Gary James August 26, 1963 - October 7. 2019

Gary was born on August 26, 1963, in Comox, B.C., and passed away on October 7, 2019. He lived on the family homestead in Merville until he was two, after which he spent his childhood years living on Arden Road.

Gary was an avid, and very talented, hockey and baseball player. He was also a skilled machinery operator at Timberwest’s Sawmill for 26 years.

Gary met the love of his life, Gail, in 1980 and married her in 1986. They had two children, Cole and Kim, and Gary devoted his life to his family.

Family was everything to Gary. He happily spent a large majority of his youth at ball fields and hockey arenas; he continued this tradition with his kids and, as their biggest fan, he took them all over the province for various sports.

He always loved to watch his nephews and nieces play as well.

Gary will be remembered for his selflessness and generosity, as he always put others first. He loved to check out garage sales and shop, almost always looking for special gifts for others. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor as well, as he could always make people laugh.

His family will always remember their happy times with Gary at their Comox Lake cabin, in Tofino, in Paradise Meadows, swimming with the dogs at the Rod and Gun Park and at the ballfields, soccer fields, hockey rinks and basketball courts.

Gary was predeceased by his wonderful mom, Donna Robertson, his grandparents and numerous aunts and uncles. He is survived by his wife, Gail, his children, Cole and Kim (Matt), his dad, Jim, siblings, Gayle (Andy), Stewart (Trudy), and Debbie, mother and father-in-law, Jacqueline and Joe, brothers-in-law, Gary (Sandy) and Grant (Diane) and his beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 19th, at 1:00 p.m., at the Fallen Alders Community Hall – 3595 Royston Rd, Courtenay , B.C.

Born December 16, 1925 in La Have, Nova Scotia, died August 24, 2019 in Victoria, British Columbia. Margaret’s feisty nature, sense of humour and keen intellect were with her throughout her rich and varied 93 years of life. Margaret had a deep and abiding love of family her husband Don who died in 2003, son John (Betsy), daughters Joy and Kathy (Rod) and her beloved granddaughters Danielle (Ryan), Ashley (Damien) and Robin (Malcom). She expressed astonishment and delight that she lived long enough to welcome eight precious great-grandchildren. And her beloved nephews in Nova Scotia, Hazen and William Trueman Margaret will be remembered as a loving wife and mother, a gifted teacher, mentor, friend and strong, strong supporter of her community. At her request, an outline of all that she was invlolved in will not be given. As she said, “Those that have known me and shared parts of my life journey will know what I’ve been involved in and what have been my family and community commitments. Who and what I will have been will have been completed and held in memories.

There is no re-writing of ones life’s script.� She valued her time spent with family, friends and colleagues. Those relationships were what mattered most and provided ongoing memories to the end.

And now Margaret gets the last word - she would love it! ‘Throughout my life I have been so truly blessed by the love of family and friends. As my earthly journey closes, I set out on my eternal journey with a sense of awe (and curiosity!), enfolded by faith and love What will this next adventure hold?�

A Celebration of Margaret’s Life will be held on Friday, October 25, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Cordova Bay United Church, 813 Claremont Ave, Victoria, B.C. In lieu of fllowers, donations to the charity of your choice in Margarets name.

PARKER, Glenn

December 28, 1936 - October 4, 2019 Glenn Parker, aged 82 of Comox, died Friday October 4 in the Comox Hospice. Glenn passed away peacefully in the arms of his loving wife, Sharon. He had survived 9 years of treatment since his diagnosis of multiple myeloma, an incurable blood cancer.

Glenn was born in Pentiction, BC. Predeceased by his parents, Gladstone Parker and Olive Vizer, he is survived by his wife of 21 years, Sharon Parker and his step children Regan (Janine) and Tara (Jason) Steele, and his granddaughter, Keira. He is also survived by his first wife, Royce Rourke and their son, Neil Parker (Angele), and his grandsons, Tate and Atlas. Glenn is also survived by his brother Barry (Gloria), sister Pat (Arie) and many nephews.

Until a few months prior to his passing, Glenn was physically active through his golf and daily walks. He actually had 2 holes- in -one in his lifetime. He enjoyed many rounds of golf with his buddies at the Comox Golf Club where he had been a member for many years. A former high school English teacher, Glenn published 10 books with a central theme of family life and resolving conflicts. He had several short stories published in Women’s World which made him our family celebrity. He loved chess, travel, RV camping and family get togethers. Residing at Ocean Pointe Strata, he loved his home and embraced the active strata community.

Glenn lived in and travelled to many countries in the world. In his youth, he worked and wandered in Australia and New Zealand. He taught in schools in New Zealand, Burns Lake and Prince George.

With Sharon he travelled throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. He spent 8 years in South Carolina, accompanying Sharon on her assignment as Guest Teacher. There he perfected his cooking, cleaning and golf skills.

Glenn’s great hope and commitment was to our local Myeloma Support Group. He looked forward to monthly meetings and always felt welcomed and inspired by the various members.

Glenn has been supported on his journey by many people in the Comox Valley including the Comox Valley Hospice, Dr. Brad Harris, Dr. Pedro Camacho, the chemotherapy unit at the Comox Valley Hospital and the North Island Myeloma Support Group.

Friends and relatives remember Glenn as a quiet and kind man. He made time to read, do his crossword puzzles, listen to anyone’s good story and do his household chores. In lieu of flowers, Glenn had two favourite charities. Myeloma Canada, 1255 Trans Canada Route, Dorval, Quebec, H9P 2V4 and Comox Valley Hospice, #102, 1509 Cliffe Ave, Courtenay, BC V9N 2K6.

The families of Sharon and Glenn Parker invite you to join them for the Final Goodbye for Glenn. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday October 25 at 11:30 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1599 Tunner Drive in Courtenay. A Commemorative Luncheon will follow. Friends and relatives will have the opportunity to share their memories of Glenn and his contributions to their lives.

Peter grew up in Ontario, joined the Canadian Navy in the 1960’s, and traveled extensively over North America in his career in sales.

Retired in Ladner, BC, and was able to do what he loved best: making music, especially jazz with his co-musicians David and Christine as the Ice Jam Trio until he and Joyce moved to Comox in 2015.

Peter passed away on October 2nd, 2019 in his 83rd year and is survived by his wife Joyce (Wilson) and, in Ontario, by his daughter Paula (Windsor) and grandchildren Gregory and Elysia.

Memorial service to be held at Faith Lutheran Church, 1688 McPhee Ave, Courtenay, on Saturday, Oct 19th, at 1:30pm.

Predeceased by her husband, Ray Pearce.

Left to mourn her passing is her brother Gerald (Sue) and nieces Tania and Lisa all from Cornwall, UK. Her children Paul (Dawn), Marty (Penny), Kathy Cadieux and Karen O’Hanley (Jerry). Jessica Lee Cabot, born June 1, 1991 in Edmonton, AB, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2019 in Vancouver, BC at the age of 28. She was predeceased by her Stepfather Harvey Skerratt, Grandparents Isabel & John and Nana Jeanann. Jessica is survived by her parents Christine Skerratt and Wayne Cabot; grandparents Judy (Terry), Harold (Pam), and Poppa Dick; sisters, Erica (Jeff), Melanie (Sead); stepsisters, Tara (Cordero), Selene, stepbrother Sloan (Nikki) also many aunts, uncle and cousins.

Jessica was an amazingly talented young lady who loved music, sang like an angel and played a number of musical instruments. Despite her disability, Jessica excelled at everything she did. As a child she enjoyed horseback riding, skiing and swimming to name a few. She was strong, independent and enjoyed traveling especially to the United States. Her greatest achievement was being an organ donor, giving the “Gift of Life� to two others. She will be forever in our hearts.

Frank was born in Leeds, England. He was conscripted into the Royal Airforce and encouraged to becomes a career oďŹƒcer but declined. Career guidance led him into insurance. He left Britain in 1960 with his ďŹ rst wife Winnifred and twin sons. Frank eventually secured a position with ICBC in 1978. He worked his way up to become a major claims adjustor and gave training seminars. Frank appreciated an unusual and challenging claim. In June of 1977 Frank married Ruth Scharanek. At the age of 45, Ruth had found her Yorkshire man and ďŹ nally found the time to get married. She was born in Buethen, Germany. In 1945 Ruth, her moth and her brother ed across Germany as the Russian Army advanced to Berlin. She again took ight to Britain and entered the Nursing School of Swindon. After graduating she furthered her education and became a midwife. The next year with her nursing friend Pat, they sailed across the Atlantic to Canada.

Ruth held various positions looking after mothers and babies during delivery, working in operating rooms, She became supervisor of the OR in Lion’s Gate Hospital. Ruth and Frank enjoyed many travels together.

They shared a love for music, painting, reading and writing. Frank passed away peacefully in the Palliative Care Unit in Nanaimo. Ruth passed the year previously in Comox Valley Hospital. Family will remember Ruth for her generous and spirited nature and Frank for his dry sense of humour and witty stories. We are grateful to the sta of the Comox Berwick, Keeping House, Comox Valley Hospital and NRGH sta who cared for Ruth and Frank. They are survived by sons/stepsons Cameron, Jason, Peter, daughter-in-law Gayle, and granddaughter Brittany.
