So when should we go to the doctor? Your primary care provider best knows your health history. You can discuss with him/her the best time for any exams or tests which you may need.

One of the main factors is that it could cause something known as a false-positive result. For example, getting high PSA levels in an asymptomatic patient, without any urinary symptoms may cause unnecessary follow-up tests and treatments, as well as causing anxiety in the patient. The positive result does not always mean that you ACTUALLY have the disease.
The evidence is leaning more towards preventative health visit rather than a complete physical exam. This is a visit where you discuss screening and preventive care such as blood pressure measurement, cervical cancer screening (pap smear), a blood test for cholesterol or blood glucose levels. These are done on an individual case basis and is based on factors such as family history, or the age of the patient.
For example, most people need screening tests/procedures for conditions after a certain age, such as: 1. Cervical cancer screening in sexually active women with pap smears after the age of 25 every 3 years. 2. High cholesterol blood test in men over age 40 or women over age 50 who have low-risk profile. 3. Diabetes screening after the age of 40 in men and women. 4. Breast cancer screening after the age of 40 or 50, depending on the risk factor. 5. Colon cancer screening by doing stool tests or colonoscopy after the age of 50. 6. Osteoporosis screening (weakened bones) after the age of 65 years in men and women. These are some of the guidelines for people who are ASYMPTOMATIC. If you have risk factors or a chronic disease, you may need different tests or may need to be tested more often. Discussing with your primary health provider, asking what schedule is right for you, can avoid unnecessary tests and overwhelming anxiety associated with them.

asweage How to travel even if you have limited mobility Many people dream of traveling the world in retirement. Such dreams come true every day. But many more retirees or people nearing retirement fear that their dreams of seeing the world won’t be possible due to mobility issues beyond their control. Thankfully, such fears are largely unwarranted. Various conditions can affect men and women’s mobility. Many such issues tend to arise after age 50, prompting many people to believe their post-retirement travel plans will never come to fruition. Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD; and heart disease may make it hard for people to travel. But that difficulty doesn’t mean aging men and women should resign themselves to a sedentary lifestyle. Though they might require a little extra effort before boarding a plane for parts unknown, the following are a handful of ways that aging men and women with limited mobility can reap the rewards of traveling.
• Contact security agencies. Security is part of modern travel, so travelers, especially those traveling by air, should expect to go through security checkpoints during their trips. Travelers with limited mobility should contact the security agencies in their home country as well as those in any country they plan to visit to get an idea of what they can expect. Knowing these guidelines in advance can help people with limited mobility determine if they should arrive extra early so they can make it through security checkpoints in time to make their flights or trains. • Contact hotels directly. Each country has its own laws regarding how to accommodate people with physical disabilities or mobility issues, so don’t leave things to chance. Before booking a hotel room abroad, travelers with limited mobility should contact the hotel directly to confirm that it can accommodate their needs.
• Contact airlines or other transportation companies if you require special accommodations. When made aware of passengers’ mobility issues, airlines or other travel companies may arrange for wheelchairs to be available at the gates or train platforms so passengers can easily make connecting flights and trains.
STE: Older Workers 55+ This program provides the skills training and employment supports needed by those who are 55 years of age or older so they can overcome barriers and achieve sustainable employment. Eligible Participants The program stream is primarily* open to unemployed, or precariously employed British Columbians aged 55 or older that face one or more barriers to employment: • Current skills don’t match industry demands • Lack of technical skills and appropriate training opportunities • Lack of familiarity with current hiring practices (such as online job applications and social media resources) *Additional eligibility requirements may apply, depending on the program type and/or the specific services and training offered. Services Programs include skills training and employment supports based on the needs of the participant. Employment supports address barriers to participation in skills training and employment. Examples include counselling, mentoring, transportation, disability supports, work experience, wage subsidies and equipment. IF YOU HAVE BEEN TRICKED INTO SIGNING A CONTRACT OR BUYING A PRODUCT OR SERVICE Contact your provincial or territorial consumer affairs office and consider getting independent advice to examine your options: there may be a cooling-off period or you may be able to negotiate a refund. IF YOU THINK SOMEONE HAS GAINED ACCESS TO YOUR ONLINE ACCOUNT, TELEPHONE BANKING ACCOUNT OR CREDIT CARD DETAILS Call your financial institution immediately so they can suspend your account and limit the amount of money you lose. Credit card companies may also be able to perform a “charge back”(reverse the transaction) if they believe that your credit card was billed fraudulently. Do not use contact details that appear in emails or on websites that you are suspicious of— they will probably be fake and
lead you to a scammer. You can find legitimate contact details in the phone book, an account statement or on the back of your ATM card.
