The No. 1-ranked Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers dropped a close game to the Kelowna Owls Sept. 27 on the last play of the game.

As the final seconds ticked off the clock,

Kelowna kicked a walk-off field goal to win the game 10-7.

The score was knotted 0-0 for most of the game. That changed with about five minutes to go when Tweedsmuir’s Tremel StatesJones bolted in for a 20-yard touchdown.

But the Panthers didn’t stay out front for long.

Soon after, Kelowna tossed a 50-yard TD pass to tie the game back up 7-7.

Then in the dying seconds of the game, the Panthers took back-to-back penalties. The penalties

Homicide investigators appealed for information Monday as they released video footage of a shooting suspect after a 29-yearold man was shot dead last Saturday at a gas station in Clayton Heights.

Gunfire rang out around 6 p.m. in the 18600-block of Fraser Highway on Sept. 28 and police say a black male “ran away from the shooting site and got into a silver sedan driven by a second black male.”

A second video clip released by police shows a silver sedan travelling near the scene, heading northbound on 180th Street.

“We’re looking for witnesses but we’re also looking for dashcam from drivers who were in the area at 6 o’clock Saturday evening,” Jang told reporters. “If you were in that area, and you recognize this, if it brings back memories, and perhaps you were the driver who almost hit this person, we need to speak with you.”

Mayor slams ‘lack of progress’ on new police force in wake of shooting ‘Bureaucratic red tape’ surrounds transition: McCallum Amy Reid Black Press Media

In the wake of a deadly daylight shooting at a gas station in Clayton Heights Sept.

28, Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum says a municipal force is needed now “more than ever.”

At least one Surrey councillor is accusing him of “fear-mongering” and “politicizing a tragedy.”

“The continued gun violence has created a sense of unease throughout the city,” McCallum said in an emailed statement to media early Monday, after a Surrey man in his late-20s was gunned down while sitting at a gas pump.

“With the province giving us the green light to establish our own Surrey Police Department, the commu-

nity believes now, more than ever, that we need to work as quickly possible to get SPD officers out on the streets,” the mayor’s statement read.

“The lack of progress to date is disappointing and is unfortunately due to bureaucratic red tape. The community has made it clear to me that there is a sense of urgency and they want meaningful work to get underway immediately to bring Surrey Police to fruition. We owe it to the people of Surrey to make this transition as quickly and smoothly as possible.”

McCallum said violent criminals are “becoming bolder.”

“Our citizens are frustrated and, rightfully, fearful,” he said in the statement.

“Saturday’s shooting happened in broad daylight, at a gas sta-

tion with shops nearby. I am thankful that innocent bystanders were not hurt in this latest shooting. The situation appears to be getting worse with each incident, as the gangs are so embolden that they don’t think twice about opening fire in daylight, in public areas or near schools.”

Independent Surrey Coun. Jack Hundial, a former Mountie and former member of the mayor’s team, accused McCallum of “politicizing a tragedy.”

“Clearly it’s a press release that does nothing to provide comfort to the community,” Hundial told Black Press Media shortly after the mayor issued his statement. “Instead, it drives a very focused political agenda.”

Hundial noted that in the city’s last budget

cycle, there was a hiring freeze on new RCMP officers despite the city’s top cop asking for more resources in the growing city. He also referred to a “Wake Up Surrey” delegation at council earlier this year, which called for 300plus additional police officers to be hired to properly staff the detachment.

“And if you look forward to the next three years, that gap is going to continue to widen,” Hundial said.

Hundial said he doesn’t think it’s fair that the mayor is criticizing the province’s timeliness, noting the approval the province gave on Aug. 22 was to take the proposed transition plan “to the next level for review.”

“No one knows why we’re doing it, what the cost is going to be

and certainly what the impacts are going to be. All you’re doing is fear-mongering,” said Hundial, suggesting unanswered questions are “a challenge now for those reviewing” the plan.

Hundial said he majority of residents he speaks to just want more police resources on the ground.

It has been roughly five weeks since the provincial government gave its approval to Surrey’s plan to transition from RCMP to a municipal force.

The city’s proposed transition plan states the force will “go live” on April 1, 2021, with operating costs of $192.5 million that year; the figure is a 10.9 per cent increase from the $173.6 million that the city projects the RCMP would cost.

After the shooting, around 10 p.m., Burnaby RCMP received a report of a burnt-out silver sedan in the Willingdon Avenue and Kemp Street.

Specifically, police are interested in footage from the Surrey scene, between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. Saturday night, and between 6:30 and 8 p.m. at the Burnaby scene.

gas pump. The windshield of the vehicle, which was eventually covered with a tarp by the RCMP, had at least eight bullet holes in it.

According to a witness, a masked suspect reportedly approached the SUV and fired up to 10 shots before running from the scene.

Investigators are still making efforts to notify some of the victim’s immediate family members of his death and so his identity will not be released at this time. The victim was known to police and the shooting is believed to be targeted.

“There is a great deal of momentum at this early stage in the investigation,” said Sergeant Frank Jang of IHIT. “Our investigators and partners are diligently collecting the evidence and a phone call from the right witness could be the difference maker in this case.”

Candidates sound-off on citizens’ concerns

If politics is bloodsport, it sure wasn’t on display at the Cloverdale-Langley City all-candidates meeting Sept. 25.

The candidates answered a series of questions in a congenial atmosphere that reflected an evening tea, rather than toe-to-toe fisticuffs.

Candidates John Aldag (Liberal), Tamara Jansen (Conservative), Rae Banwarie (NDP), and Caelum Nutbrown (Green) answered questions ranging from concerns about the mortgage stress test, the homelessness crisis, and climate change, to illegal immigration, health problems arising from cannabis legalization, decriminalizing

drugs, and others.

Hosted by the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce, about 100 people attended the event held at KPU-Cloverdale.

In their opening statements, Nutbrown said he’s running for the Greens because he wants to have a family in the future and he doesn’t know if he should because of the state of the world.

Youth are “experiencing anxiety and depression, lots of different mental health issues, because they are uncertain about the future,” the 29-yearold said.

Aldag said “it’s been a true privilege to listen to voices and have conversations on the door steps and in the coffee shops of this community for about 6 years

now. I’ve been able to take those priorities and fight for them, and advocate for them, in Ottawa.”

Banwarie said he “decided to run because he wanted to represent the people of Cloverdale.”

He sees significant issues that need to be addressed, from crime, which is huge in Surrey, he said, to families not being able to make ends meet, to the opioid crisis, to the issues of climate change and pollution.

Jansen said she’s a local, born and raised and wants to represent the locals. She said her and her husband used to own a farm that employed 200 people. She said because of that, she knows budgeting and how to make payroll. “I’ve employed

many people over the years and you learn what real people really need. What are their concerns? I want to represent you as regular people in Ottawa.”

Rebecca Smith, the new president of the Chamber, moderated the Q&A. The questions were compiled by the Chamber from submissions they received.

Candidates were limited to one-minute responses.

The first question was about what candidates would do to ease some of the burden surrounding the mortgage stress test.

The federal Liberal election platform is out, and it’s brimming with talking points not only for Justin Trudeau, but for his political rivals as well.

There are billions in new spending — $57 billion worth, according to the Conservatives’ critical math — to be financed in part by new taxes on the wealthy, large international corporations, foreign housing speculators and tech giants.

“Liberals are proposing to continue to invest in Canadians because it is working to grow our economy, create opportunities for everyone,” Trudeau said Monday in Toronto as he repeated his explanation for continuing to increase spending.

There’s billions in red ink, too: The platform projects

a $27.4-billion deficit next year, falling to $21 billion by the fourth year of what would be a second Liberal mandate, should Trudeau’s growth-and-investment approach win out over what he calls the cuts and austerity of Andrew Scheer’s Tories.

Scheer began his own set of campaign appearances Monday by highlighting what Conservatives consider Liberal disregard for the federal balance sheet—an image Trudeau seemed to lean into Sunday as an important point of distinction between the two parties.

“We must elect a Conservative government that will live within its means,” Scheer said in suburban Whitby, Ont., before announcing he would make it easier for thousands of Canadians to access the federal

disability tax credit. “(Trudeau) has made billions of dollars in uncosted promises that will force him to either raise taxes, break promises or break the bank.”

Trudeau spent Monday morning in Toronto talking to health-care professionals about what he has promised a re-elected Liberal government would do about guns. That’s a hot topic in a city that has seen 340 shooting incidents this year alone, with 503 victims — 28 of them fatal — according to Toronto police data.

Scheer faced questions, too. The Liberals are trying to make hay with the fact that the Conservative leader never finished the licensing process to become an insurance broker, a job he says he had before politics. The party says he was

accredited, but left the industry before getting his licence.

On Monday, Scheer said he worked in an insurance office for about six or seven months in 2003 and that his tasks included supporting more senior staff, answering questions from customers and providing information to people who came into the office. He said licensed brokers finalized transactions.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh continued to focus his efforts on the Vancouver area, where he promised to bring in universal child care, costing no more than $10 per day, across the country by 2030.

He also said voters in Ontario and elsewhere should not believe Trudeau when he says the election is about a choice between the Liberals and Conservatives.

Regarding the needs of seniors, Banwarie said he supports adding dental coverage, and other medical coverage to MSP for seniors.

On the topic of immigration, Aldag said he wants to change the narrative surrounding immigration, illegal immigration, and refugees. “We need to lead by example. There are millions of refugees around the world. We need to look at how we bring some of them here.”

Jansen added, “We need to close the loophole of the safe-third country agreement.”

She also said Canada needs to increase the availability of private sponsorship, noting that Canada has had success with that program. Jansen said her family has privately sponsored a family in the past and the sponsored family is now living a successful life here.

Banwarie said the mindset of Canadians needs to change. “I’m an immigrant. We have to make Canada a place where they are respected, where they are ac-

cepted, and where their training is recognized.”

On Marijauna, Nutbrown said plants for personal use, should be allowed to be grown outside in people’s yards. This would alleviate mould and health concerns arising from indoor growth.

Jansen commented that the carbon tax isn’t doing anything for the environment.

“We’ve had a carbon tax for 10 years and our emissions are going up.

All a carbon tax does is make life less affordable for you. The Conservatives support green technology.” She said the Conservatives would invest in greentech and share those innovations around the world. “We can actually have a global impact on carbon emissions.”

The candidates were asked what they thought were the most important issues facing residents in Cloverdale-Langley City.

Nutbrown said they were affordability, electoral reform, tax reform (close tax havens), poverty, universal basic income, and climate.“We have 18 months to act.

And (we have) 11 years to actually do something to save our chil-

dren’s futures. That is what we’re fighting for.

This is the greatest crisis the human species will ever face. It’s larger than the World War II crisis.”

On the legalization of drugs, Nutbrown said, “We support the decriminalization of all drugs. We need to stabilize drug users lives. We need to help people and move past the stigma of addictions.”

Aldag said decriminalization has benefits.

“I’ve been to DTES and seen the positive work that safe treatment and addiction facilities have provided.”

Jansen said the idea of full legalization “doesn’t help our communities.”

Banwarie said a safe drug supply was critical.

“Everything is counterfeited now, including drugs. We have to be able to stop that, and a safe drug supply is key.”

In closing, all the candidates said they support small business, with Banwarie, Aldag and Jansen all committing to bring in better regulations to help small businesses, while Nutbrown said the Greens would “tax big companies and large corporations and reinvest that in the economy.”

When it comes to these shootings on our city’s streets, Surrey residents can be forgiven for feeling like Bill Murray in that movie Groundhog Day. In the film, Murray’s weatherman character enters some kind of twilight zone loop that has him reliving the same day, with the same events, over and over, and over again.

The shooting early Saturday evening in Clayton, where a man was gunned down at a gas station in the 18600-block of Fraser Highway, is of course shocking.

What’s happening in its wake, however, is quite predictable.

So Let It Be Written...

Shootings resemble endless movie loop Tom Zytaruk First, media outlets break the news about a “brazen” shooting. Is there any other kind?

Then, we learn from police that the victim is “known to police.”

Typically, police also make some kind of declaration that the public isn’t in danger as these kinds of shootings are “targeted.”

But the laws of physics, reality of bullets

flying everywhere, and presence of innocent people in the vicinity at the time, strongly suggests otherwise.

After the headlines, and police’ remarks, we hear from the politicians. The mayor of the day says the latest shooting is outrageous, unacceptable, etc.

Someone from a higher level of government, typically the solicitor general, chimes in.

Hot on the heels of a fatal street shooting last October, in the final stretch of the civic election campaign, a 30-year-old man was gunned down in Newton, police connected it to “gang conflict,” and mayoral candidates Doug McCallum and Tom Gill pumped out

press releases arguing, respectively, for a new force to replace the RCMP, and for a ban on handguns. Both were accused of politicizing a tragedy.

Hot on the heels of a fatal street shooting last November – in which a 22-year-old man was gunned down in Newton, police connected the shooting to gang violence and McCallum jumped on the occasion to buttress his argument that the city needs to ditch the RCMP, saying, “This latest incident of deadly gun violence further emphasizes the need for the City of Surrey to have its own police force.”

This rankled RCMP brass, and they let it

be known. McCallum, again, was accused of politicizing a tragedy.

Then, this Monday, a statement from McCallum released not quite two days after this latest shooting, declares that “now, more than ever,” Surrey needs to “work as quickly as possible to get SPD officers out on the streets.” The unstated, but nevertheless crystal clear message from McCallum, is that the RCMP is dropping the ball.

In response, Surrey Councillor Jack Hundial, a retired Mountie, accuses the mayor of politicizing the tragedy.

Surrey will almost certainly be getting a much-needed new hospital, and it is likely to be located somewhere close to Highway 10.

Health Minister Adrian Dix said concept planning is underway, and he expects to make some sort of announcement before the end of this year. This announcement is long overdue.

“It’s a very high priority for me,” Dix said recently, of a new hospital in Surrey. “The key issue in Surrey is obviously the location of the hospital and when they say there hasn’t been information, obviously when you’re looking at locations, until you have established that and effectively purchased it or have the right to the location, you obviously can’t talk

rey Memorial, Peace Arch or Langley Memorial hospitals.

This makes abundant sense, as hospitals need to be as close to people’s homes as possible.

Minutes are often precious.

His remarks seem to point to a hospital somewhere near Highway 10, likely in the western half of Surrey and south of Newton, but possibly as far east as Cloverdale. A site which had been earmarked for a new hospital, at 5750 Panorama Dr., was sold off under the former BC Liberal government and is now being developed for residential use. It would have fit the “geographic balance” criterion perfectly.

At one time, Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation owned a large property on Highway

10 at 180 Street – property bequeathed to it by the Bourassa family. It is possible that site is still available. Trees and other vegetation are being cleared from the property, vacant for almost three decades, right now.

Another possible site in Cloverdale is on property adjacent to the Kwantlen Polytechnic University campus. Formerly the Shannon farm, the land was owned for decades by BC Hydro and is still under provincial control.

A city as large as Surrey, with enormous growth potential, needs at least one more hospital. The urgent-care centres now being established by the NDP government (one has opened in Surrey near SMH) help fill the gap somewhat,

as they take pressure off the emergency rooms. The Jim Pattison Outpatient Centre on the former Green Timbers nursery property has also been a good step in the right direction. However, a full-service hospital with enough room for expansion in the future is needed as well.

Despite many expansions at Surrey Memorial, it remains significantly overcrowded.

Waits in the emergency room are often lengthy. Langley Memorial, which serves many in the eastern portion of Surrey, is preparing to expand its very overcrowded emergency room.

Peace Arch Hospital is getting busier each year as South Surrey grows.

All three of those hospitals have room for expansion, and

it is a certainty that they will be expanded in the future. Surrey will one day be the biggest city in the province.

A hospital to serve the growing population of this city would be a major step forward in helping to correct some of the infrastructure deficit that has existed here for decades.

The NDP promised to get to work on this project in the 2017 election campaign, and it sounds like Dix is taking the issue seriously. It’s important to also note that any new hospital will take years of planning and construction.

Rural B.C. suffers one more hit from NDP The annual Union of B.C. Municipalities convention is usually a non-event for cosmopolitan Vancouver. A little more downtown congestion added to the cruiseship traffic, an extra bump in already high hotel prices, more demand for taxis.

It’s usually a yawner for the city media too, lots of rural problems and dry financial discussions. That changed briefly last week, as a convoy of hundreds of logging trucks descended on the downtown convention centre, from as far north as Prince George and down through the Cariboo and Okanagan-Similkameen.

They honked and rolled for hours, getting brief attention from TV cameras.

The industry doesn’t seem very organized, one urban observer said. I replied that “the industry” in this case is out-of-work independent

Province showing clear signs it is heading for deficits

Government’s response to a wave of sawmill and logging layoffs has been slow and clumsy, capped

by Horgan’s comments to reporters after his convention-closing speech.

The $25 million was for small grants to diversify rural economies, many in towns that lost their forest employment a while ago.

No example is more poignant than Port McNeill and its neighbouring villages. You don’t have to explain to Winter Harbour and other North Island communities what it’s like to lose a once-vibrant economy.

She also serves on the board of Mount Waddington Regional District, which had one of the hundreds of “rural dividend” applications awaiting approval.

Theirs was around $200,000 for a non-profit society to run its “fundamentals of forestry” project.

That would pay for a staffer to recruit people to move to the North Island.

“Not just workers, bringing people to our region, the quality of life, why to live here, why to invest here, that kind of thing,” Wickstrom told me. “Port Alice had an

application in as well, for some signage. They’re trying to reinvent themselves after the mill closure.”

The long-dormant pulp mill there was officially shuttered in February, its small maintenance crew laid off.

The NDP government has looked desperate on the forest crisis, suspending its caribou-protection plan, appointing an apologist MLA to go on yet another listening tour and then this horribly short-sighted cancellation of a modest diversification program.

And while $25 million provides a hand up for

some little towns, it’s a drop in the bucket for Finance Minister Carole James. She just moved $300 million from contingency funds, basically an unused wildfire budget that came in handy to keep the province out of red ink for this year.

There’s still more than $400 million in contingency this year, but Horgan confirmed that all ministries are looking for cuts. Their big inherited surplus has been spent.

But here’s one possible solution all levels of government might consider, that just might help. Perhaps, if government all pulled their hands out of our pockets, even just a little bit, maybe parents wouldn’t have to work like madmen and madwomen just to keep their family’s heads above the water.

Maybe, if they weren’t working so darned hard to feed those taxation furnaces in Ottawa and Victoria, and paying more and more for everything else every new week, perhaps they might actually have some spare time to spend on their children.

You know, actually get to know them and their associates, before they end up in a gang, or on either side of a gun.

Surrey has been chosen as one of 13 B.C. communities to adopting “innovative and safe” mass-timber technology for buildings up to 12 storeys, says the province.

The initiative for wood buildings, according to a release from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing on Tuesday (Sept. 24), are “faster to build, better for the environment and create new jobs and opportunities for the forest communities in the province.”

The province said the 13 communities represent 35 per cent of all housing starts in 2018 in B.C. The early adopter communities, the ministry said, will provide feedback on changes ahead of the next major code change.

The ministry says the technology has been reviewed by the National Building Code committees as well as by experts, such as fire safety specialists, structural engineers, architects, scientists and builders.

The province says mass timber buildings can be prefabricated

off-site and “can be put in place quicky,” which will allow for people to move into homes faster.

Mass timber construction has a “reduced carbon footprint when sourced from sustainably managed forests,” which will help the government reach its CleanBC goals of reducing carbon emissions, the province said.

The CleanBC plan was developed to help achieve the province’s climate targets of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40 per cent by the year 2030.

A new warning system for the Pattullo Bridge to alert drivers ahead of an earthquake is expected to go live later this year.

The “advanced warning system” will monitor wind speeds and also detect seismic activity to “provide alerts up to one minute prior to damaging ground waves reaching the bridge,” according to a report considered at a Sept. 25 meeting of the Mayor’s Council on Regional Transportation.

In an emailed statement, TransLink told the Now-Leader that the system will involve the installation of ground sensors that detect seismic activity.

“Once the system is activated, gates, similar to railway gates, come down to prevent traffic from crossing the bridge. In addition to the gates, the system also consists of advance warning flashers and signage for vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians,” the statement explained.

The current crossing is more than 80 years old and was not designed to meet current wind and seismic standards that would apply to a new bridge constructed today, the report notes.

“As result, may be vulnerable in a seismic or hurricane-level wind event,” the Mayors Council report states, noting the aim of the system is to “improve safety.”

PBX Engineering has completed design work, and the contractor Mainroad has started construction.

TransLink expects the system to go live in December. None of the other bridges owned and maintained by TransLink have the system, including Knight Street, Golden Ears, and Westham Island bridges.

With plans for a Pattullo Bridge replacement underway, TransLink is monitoring the bridge.

This year, TransLink also plans

to do more repairs to some of the bridge’s railings, with some of that work already completed earlier in 2019. “A total of 606 railing posts were inspected and assigned deficiency ratings based on their observed conditions. Of the 606 posts inspected, 128 posts were classified as needing immediate repair or replacement,” according to the TransLink report.

A condition inspection was also completed in late July.

“No new areas of concern have been reported so far as a result of the July 2019 inspections,” the report notes. “TransLink will continue to perform annual monitoring as well as any additional investigations and repairs as required if any areas of concern or accelerated deteriorations are detected.”

The condition of the bridge’s concrete deck is also being monitored, as it is in an “active and advanced state of deterioration, primarily due to corrosion of the reinforcing steel.”

TransLink says deck experts are conducting bi-weekly walk-through inspections from the deck, ground and catwalk levels.

In addition to the top surface of the deck, TransLink says “extensive corrosion-related damage is also occurring to the bottom surface.”

Debris netting is currently in place to protect the public and other infrastructure, including the railway tracks, from concrete falling from the deck soffit.

Northwest Hydraulic Consultants also conducts bi-annual surveys assessing risks from the changing of river hydraulics.

The $1.3 billion replacement of the bridge is scheduled to start by the end of 2019 and be completed in 2023. Built north of the existing 80-year-old structure, the new bridge will have four lanes, plus pedestrian and bike lanes and a new off-ramp to the South Fraser Perimeter Road.

Councillors call for new Cloverdale arena

Brenda Locke and Linda Annis both say community desperately needs a new rink

After councillor Doug Elford recently announced he wanted to look into the cost of twinning the existing Cloverdale Arena, two other Surrey City councillors are saying “hold on.”

Both Brenda Locke and Linda Annis said Cloverdale definitely needs a new arena, but twinning the existing rink (built in 1972) would be a waste of money.

“We don’t need an antiquated arena with an extra sheet tacked onto it,” Annis told the Cloverdale Reporter.

“We need a new arena.

We need the design that was put forward.”

She said Cloverdale deserves the ice surfaces. “There’s no need for more talk. It’s time to build what was promised and underway

before (mayor McCallum) stopped it.”

He added the committee will look into everything. “I know that they’ve done a lot of legwork on this already. So hopefully we’re not reinventing the wheel here. When it was initially put on hold—it wasn’t killed—the idea was to revisit this particular project later.”

Annis said people can sugarcoat it anyway they want, by saying it was put on hold or postponed in the last budget, but the truth is the arena project was cancelled.

City, also said Cloverdale is in dire need a new rink and not a refurb on an old building.

“I can’t go hardly a day without hearing someone tell me about the need for an arena here. Families that have kids in ice sports are having to leave the community to play, or they have these incredibly early or late ice times that are not appropriate for kids. It can be a huge struggle.”

Aldag also said the federal government

has an infrastructure program that could kick in 40 per cent of the cost to build a new rink. He said the only catch is that you have to have municipal and provincial buy-in.

Generally, he said, the city needs to prioritise the project, then it gets sent to the provincial government, who then presents all the provincial projects to the federal government for funding.

“We’ve already used that program to help build facilities here,” Aldag added. “We

successfully used funds under the federal program to help build the Cloverdale Athletic Park.”

Annis said she is 100 per cent in favour of partnering with the provincial and federal governments to get that funding.

Councillor Locke said Surrey is already lacking in ice surfaces even after a new threesheet rink was built in Bridgeview, adding that a new arena for Cloverdale must be part of the dialogue in this year’s budgeting process.

“Yes, we built three rinks in Bridgeview, but we closed the North Surrey Rec Centre, so those rinks are really only plus one.”

Locke said she also doesn’t support twinning the 47-year-old Cloverdale Arena. She said it can be almost more costly to retrofit existing buildings.

“We have never talked about (twinning the arena) at council. I don’t know where (the idea) is coming from.

Perhaps the mayor’s talked about it, but I haven’t been involved in any conversations about it,” she said.

“Surrey is under-iced when we compare cities across the province, and under-iced when we compare cities

across Western Canada.”

Locke said Surrey has the biggest school district in the province with roughly 72,500 students. (By comparison, Vancouver has roughly 56,500 students and Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows has roughly 15,000 students.)

Vancouver has 10 ice sheets the public can access in 10 rinks (not counting the Pacific Coliseum and Robson Square—which both have public skating), Maple RidgePitt Meadows has five sheets of ice in two arenas, and Surrey has nine sheets in five rinks.

That means Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows has roughy one sheet of ice for every 3,000 kids, Vancouver has roughly one sheet of ice for every 5,600 kids, and Surrey has roughly one sheet of ice for every 8,000 students.

Surrey would need another 15 ice sheets to bring them on par with Maple Ridge and another four ice surfaces to bring them on par with Vancouver (six sheets if you include the Pacific Coliseum and Robson Square).

“If you want to do things for kids, you need the infrastructure.”

Cineplex Langley to screen Jordan Peterson documentary

Film on controversial author to play in limited release

The Rise of Jordan Peterson, a new documentary profiling the controversial psychology professor and Canadian author is getting a very limited release in select theatres, Oct. 6 – one of which is in Langley.

Pe t e r s o n has sparked both outrage and support with opposition to the use of non-binary terms, opinions on political correctness, and the release of his 2018 bestseller 12 Rules For Life: An Antidote to Chaos.

Director Patricia Marcoccia and producer Maziar Ghaderi began capturing Peterson’s life for a doc detailing his friendship and family bonds with Kwakwaka’wakw carver Charles Joseph.

Marcoccia said the project changed in 2016 when Peterson released a series of Youtube videos criticizing the use of gender-less pronouns.

“I had no idea these videos were coming,” Marcoccia said, “it came as a big surprise.

We started filming but I had to switch gears and put what I was doing aside; circumstances became quite different.”

The film is a longer

version of Marcoccia’s documentary Shut Him Down, which aired on CBC in 2018. Since the Youtube videos, Maroccia said Peterson’s name has sparked protests, but more importantly, a public dialogue.

“This is such a conversation starter – there is so much to talk about,” she said.

Since completion however, the filmmakers gave struggled with finding a theatrical release for their work.

Screenings of The Rise of Jordan Peterson were recently cancelled in Toronto due to backlash, with some employees citing that they were uncomfortable with the film’s content.

“It’s been an interesting, mixed process,” Marcoccia explained, feeling disapointed with the the film’s backlash. “All sorts of theatres have said it’s unethical to give Peterson a platform, but I feel there is a difference between there being a film about him and giving him a platform. Distributors have told us ‘people won’t pay money to see someone they don’t like’.”

Marcoccia’s and Ghaderi’s production company, Holding Space Films, decided to go with a cinema on demand format so

theatres can request screenings for their location.

There are now 11 screenings across the country (half of which are in Ontario) slated for Oct. 6.

Colossus Langley is one of two theatres in all of B.C. to screen the film at 3:30 p.m. this Sunday; the only other one being Cineplex Odeon Park and Tilford in North Vancouver.

“We just had premiere and it is gratifying to see three and a half years of work come together. The model is going well - places like Langley may have chosen it because they had a free slot.”

The director said she had heard rumours of possible protests of the screening in Langley, but said ticket sales have proven there is an interest.

“It’s hard to know he [Peterson] is being protested less and less.

It really only draws more attention to the event,” Marcoccia explained. “The film was made in a way to reflect back the polarizing way Peterson has been covered – there is so much more perplexity. Nothing just fits one certain narrative.”

Knights ‘feeling good’ despite tough start Tom Zillich Black Press Media

It’s been another tough start to the hockey season for Surrey Knights, but the team’s on-ice leaders are optimistic about better things to come.

“This team is definitely better than last year, I can see that, and it’s a talented group of guys in there,” said forward Evandeep Purewal, named captain of the Pacific Junior Hockey League team a couple weeks ago.

“And it’s a better mindset as well, with the new rink and everything, the nice facility we have now,” he added. “It’s a really beautiful place to play hockey.”

The new scenery at North Surrey Sport & Ice Complex gave the team some jump out of the gate, with a home-opener against Port Moody Panthers that went to overtime.

The Knights fell 3-2 in the extra frame.

Since that single point earned on Sept.

5, the squad has gone winless in September, in 10 games.

Of late, a threegames-in-four-nights schedule saw the Knights lose 1-0 at home to Abbotsford on Thursday (Sept.

26), followed by 8-1 and 10-2 road losses to Ridge Meadows and Mission, respectfully.

When the Now-Leader caught up with Purewal and his assistant captains early last week, the mood was upbeat as the team prepared for a midweek practice.

“Last season it took us about half the season just to come close to winning a game, and this year we almost got a win in the very first game, which went to overtime here and it could have gone either way because of the way the boys were playing,” Purewal noted.

“Last year we had just one practice a week, so right there that’s going to be better for us,” Purewal said.

While the Surrey-raised Purewal will wear the ‘C’ on his chest this season, the

assistant captains are Malik Dhaliwal and Ben Wasmuth, with an additional ‘A’ worn by both Drew Williams (for home games) and Bradley Collins (on the road).

“Williams and Collins were tied in votes among the players,”

Leiper noted, “so we want to make sure they get a chance at being an assistant captain.”

On the ice, Purewal and Williams are leading the way with three goals and two assists apiece, with rookie Navkarn Gill adding a goal and four assists

for a share of the team points lead.

In goal, returning netminder Naveen Kainth has faced 277 shots in nine games.

Purewal joined the Knights from White Rock Whalers early last season, in a trade.

“He’s a big guy, he’s

fast and he scores goals,” Leiper said of his captain. “He developed with us and figured out the league.

He’s playing great, but he got injured – he’s nursing a shoulder injury. He’s not a Band-Aid, he’s battling through it.”

In conversation, Purewal talked about a hockey path that took him from Surrey to Ontario to Alberta and back to Surrey.

“I started playing in Grade 7 – second-year Peewee, so I got a late start,” he explained.

“I played in Surrey until Midget and then I went to Ontario for about two months to play Junior A there, and then got dropped down and went to Alberta to play Junior B. I could have stayed in Alberta but decided to come back to B.C. to study at SFU and also play hockey still.”

“I always wanted to be a lawyer, so we’ll see where that goes afterward,” he said.

“This might be my last year of hockey, so I want to make the most of it,” Purewal added.

“I would like to play university hockey at home, and if I got the chance I’d take it – it’s really high-level hockey. So I’m playing the best I can this year and we’ll see what happens after that. I’m going to school right now and working, so there are opportunities away from hockey, which I love playing but at the end of the day, it’s just a game.”

Purewal said the Knights have a goal of earning at least 10 wins this season.

“I can see that happening – we’re practicing hard,” he said.

“Last year, it was a lot tougher. But this is different, and it feels different. The team is a lot better and we’re feeling good.”

Giants blank Kelowna Rockets at home Spirited first period set tone for home team

A spirited first period set the tone for the Vancouver Giants, who handed the Kelowna Rockets their first loss of the regular season.

The Giants hosted Kelowna at the Langley Events Centre Sept. 27, the team’s third game in less than 48 hours.

The team played in Langley last Friday night, in Kamloops on Saturday, and then back at the LEC for the home game matinee on Sunday.

Fifty-two minutes in penalties were handed out that first period, the bulk of those at the 20:00 mark. But rather than be intimidated

by Kelowna’s game plan, the Giants used it to band together.

“Without Owen Hardy in the line-

up, they were going to try and push us around and I liked how we responded,” said head coach Michael Dyck. “We took a step forward, we stuck together.

“I think our response set the tone for the second and third.”

Scoreless through 20 minutes against the Rockets, the Giants busted the game wide-open in the middle frame with backto-back goals courtesy of Milos Roman and then another from Justin Sourdif.

Sourdif added an empty-net goal to make the final score 4-0. Both Sourdif and Roman are tied for the team lead with four goals through five games. Sourdif also has a team-best eight points for the 3-2-0-0 Giants.

The loss was Kelowna’s first regulation

defeat this Western Hockey League season as they fell to 2-1-1-0.

“The second period we just continued to play fast. Using our speed and we did a good job in the neutral zone on both sides of the puck, defensively controlling the middle of the ice, we know how dangerous they are off the rush,” Dyck said, while adding that game plan offensively was to get pucks deep, apply pressure and play fast.

The Giants’ defensive play earned full marks for the victory, holding Kelowna to just 14 shots on goal.

Even more impressive was the fact the Rockets had six power-play opportunities in the game compared to Vancouver’s two, with the Giants converting on one of the chances, Roman’s sec-

ond of the night.

Vancouver had won both games to open the season on the road in Prince George but fell 4-2 in their home opener and then 6-2 the following night in Kamloops.

Despite the lopsided score, it was a onegoal game heading into the third period before the Blazers scored four times in the final frame.

“Our work ethic last night was very good, and our work ethic again tonight was very good and that is going to be our foundation moving forward,” Dyck said.

Up next for the Giants is their annual Prairie road trip which sees them travel to Manitoba and Saskatchewan for six games in nine days from October 4 to 12.
