A year after it first opened its doors to students, Salish Secondary will welcome its first graduating class of students.

The $55.2-million school opened with limited enrollment in September 2018, with 850 students ranging from Grade 8 to 11.

A year later, the school is over-enrolled at 1,100 students, but not yet at the 1,500 capacity. It’s about 50 more students than staff were expecting to serve in 2019/20, but principal Sheila Hammond said they’ll still be comfortable.

With the population swelling, the priority becomes creating a sense of community, at least for Hammond.

“Community blocks” will divide the school into small groups of about 20 students each to encourage a sense of community, and to provide the opportunity for older students to mentor their younger cohort.

“We really want to start the year off with the students connecting with their community block mates and their teacher of that block,” said Hammond.

With this being the first year with a graduating class, Hammond said she will be speaking to the students about what legacy they want to leave as well.

DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society’s latest bit of funding will be the “thread” that helps the organization work with transition homes and other settlement organizations, says the society’s CEO. Minister of Women and Gender Equality Maryam Monsef was at DIVERSEcity’s Newton office on Aug. 27 to announce more than $3 million in funding for five organizations to help support survivors of gender-based violence in the Lower Mainland.

“The approach focuses on the question ‘How can the worker build partnerships with parents and children in situations of suspected or substantiated child abuse and still deal rigorously with the maltreatment issues?’”

Sahota told Black Press Media that DIVERSEcity has had a “keen interest” in this model because it was “seeing positive results with newcomers and refugee women accessing safety plans that were culturally sensitive.”

“Obviously due to the federal government being open to the idea of testing this out in Canada, we feel that there’s only upside to be gained in the sense of if this project can be scale-

able to Canada and is responsive to the needs of newcomer women, then we’d love to be able to provide some data and research in order to hopefully replicate it across other cities.”

Sahota said it helps that Surrey has the population and growth as a city to offer this program.

“I think we get that cross-section of population that in many ways, we’re a microcosm of what the rest of Canada is, so it really makes sense that we actually pilot this and we are the leaders in the forefront of this.”

DIVERSEcity, she said, began piloting the program back in April.

The other organizations that received funding are: • B.C. Society of Transition Housing, which received $800,000 “to improve access to transition houses and safe homes for Indigenous women and chil-

dren.”

• Stó:lo Service Agency received $243,000 “to help address ongoing challenges facing Indigenous women in the area, including poverty, incarceration, as well as sexual abuse and assault.”

• Vancouver Women’s Health Collective received $400,000 “to test and evaluate the application of the Aboriginal Women’s Intervention as a promising practice in the Downtown Eastside… in order to improve the health and well-being of Indigenous women who are survivors of intimate partner violence.”

• WAVAW Rape Crisis Centre, which received $985,000 “to identify gaps in service provisions and increase provisions and inclusion for two-spirit and LGBT communities and gender non-binary survivors of gender-based violence.”

Neelam Sahota, DIVERSEcity’s CEO, said the funding is “tremendous” because it will allow the society to “work in collaboration with so many great organizations already doing work out there.

“It provides us, basically, a thread that gets us working together with transition homes, with other settlement organizations,” Sahota said.

The funding, she said, will be used for a pilot project that’s also “happening for the first time in Canada.” Sahota said the project is based off an Australian model called “Signs of Safety.”

According to Signs of Safety’s website, it’s an “innovative, strengthsbased safety organized approach to child protection casework.” The

The Surrey School District is expecting to enroll between 1,000 and 1,200 new students for the 2019/2020 school year.

In total, the district’s projected enrolment is 74,700 students.

In the 2018/2019 school year, the district surpassed its projected enrolment.

“Just for perspective, one year of growth in our school district is the equivalent to the population of a secondary school, or a couple of elementary schools,” said Surrey Board of Education chair Laurie Larsen in a release from the district.

“Schools take at least two to three years to plan and build, so it’s difficult, but we’ve worked hard with the Ministry of Education to speed up the process.”

Black Press Media previously asked Minister of Education Rob Fleming how the ministry plans to get ahead of the overcrowding issue, and he said, “You have to build another high school; 1,700 is a very large high school and you can’t keep adding and going into 2,000 (students) and beyond.”

Fleming said there are plans to build another high school, “and we’ll probably have to do that every five to seven years.”

“We’re certainly going to have to build a number of elementary schools. We’re doing that now. We have five under development or under construction.

This fall, Newton’s Panorama Park Elementary addition will be completed which will add 200 student seats. According to the district, it will be ready in October.

Expansions are also underway at Coyote Creek, Frost Road and Sullivan elementary schools, which are all scheduled to open in 2020. The 700-seat addition at Sullivan Heights is already underway, with expected occupancy in September of

2021.

Construction of Clayton’s Regent Road Elementary is expected to start this year.

According to the district, at least 5,500 new student spaces are expected to open by fall of 2021.

The district’s portable count for the 2019/2020 school year is 361, up 28 from last year.

The release also says the district has budgeted to hire 78 addition teachers, five principals and vice-principals, 107 educational assistants and 19 support staff members.

As for other growing pains, there are no changes coming to help combat parking and transit woes expressed by students, parents and community members last year.

The school’s parking lot, designed by ICBC, needs to be driven according to the planned “flow.” Educating the community on how to follow that plan is crucial from the get-go, said Hammond.

Vehicles dropping off or picking up students have to access the parking lot from the driveway located off of 184 Street, south of the school.

For those who take the bus to school, there are no new routes that will service the school.

point for public transit will continue to be the 184th and Fraser Highway intersection south of the school, about a 10-minute walk.

There is no sidewalk on the east side of 184th Street — the side of the street that the school is located on. Students who take the bus must cross Fraser Highway — in some cases, cross it twice — to get to the sidewalks on the west side of the street.

They are asked to walk north up 184th until they can safely cross the street once more in front of Salish Secondary.

Hammond said that safety has improvement for students walking to school over the last year, with lights and signage being added in, but she did advise students to always walk facing traffic between Fraser Hwy and 72 Ave to stay safe.

Celebration of White Rock’s greatest treasure Tuesday, Aug. 27 was a glorious day in White Rock’s history, and many thousands of people were there to be part of it.

It was a warm, sunny late-summer day. Sand bars at the beach were firm during the day, and then were gradually covered with the incoming tide and the warm sea water as the afternoon wore on. Every restaurant on Marine Drive was busy. The parking lots were close to full.

It was a typical

summer day, but it was unique in one very important respect. The pier was reopened to pedestrians after an eightmonth shutdown, made necessary by the violent windstorm of Dec. 20.

If anyone doubted the drawing power of the pier, the crowds that surged onto it all day and long into the evening proved them wrong.

People came in the thousands, from all over the Lower Mainland. Many came from even farther away. There were

people of many racial backgrounds, people of all ages, people of varying abilities. All were drawn by the sun, the sand, the white rock, the overall atmosphere, but most of all, the pier.

They had the opportunity to see just how much work has been done along the waterfront. Not only is the pier open again (it still needs a number of finishing touches), but the walkway along east beach is mostly complete. That area has changed quite a bit, with less grass but

The new washrooms at the foot of the pier are a huge improvement from the old ones, and there is a great deck for viewing the entire bay right above them.

Nature co-operated fully to make the special occasion even more memorable. As the sun set, the colour of the sky kept changing I posted a photo on Facebook at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, and it didn’t take

long for responses to come in from people in Asia and Africa, as well as many local people. Also responding were my two aunts, both of whom live quite a distance from White Rock. They grew up there and consider it to be one of the most special places in the world.

White Rock’s waterfront is one of the greatest treasures we have here in the South Fraser area.

The overwhelming response to the opening of the pier proves that. Many

thanks to the City of White Rock and its government partners for ensuring that the pier-restoration work went ahead quickly, and to the Friends of the Pier and many other people in the community who stepped up and helped financially to ensure the project would not be held back for lack of funds.

As the Second World War drew to a close, communities throughout the province were concerned with the lack of opportunities for teenagers. Times were changing, towns were getting larger, and newspapers were drawing attention to the potential rise of juvenile delinquency due to increased spare time.

The American-born “Teen Town” movement was born of this modern concern. In 1942, teenagers began to create their own miniature civic organizations that provided both entertainment and a taste of how society operated.

B.C.’s first Teen Town — founded in Penticton, October, 1944 — quickly opened the door for many others around the province, including several chapters in Surrey.

Four basic rules made up the backbone of Teen Town – no drinking, no smoking, no profanity and no gambling.

Each Teen Town had a mayor, an alderman and roles such as city engineer, city clerk, treasurer and city police. While an adult advisor was needed to sponsor the organization, each Teen Town was set up as a self-governing body that would organize events, fundraise, and support the community.

In Surrey, the first Teen Town was started by Queen Elizabeth Secondary School students in March, 1946.

Within a few months, there were chapters active in Fleetwood, White Rock and Clayton. By November, the

In these miniature municipalities run by the leaders of the future, the young ladies were just as likely to be voted into leadership roles as were the young men. Cloverdale’s first Teen Town mayor was Doreen Smith and one of the first mayors in Clayton was Joyce Russell.

By 1947, the Teen Town movement had increased to 10,000 members throughout B.C. Surrey had gained two more clubs in Sullivan and Green Timbers, bringing the total to six chapters within the municipality.

Dances were the mainstay of the Teen Towns’ fundraising

activities, and themes showcased the creativity of the youth organizers who had finally been given an opportunity to plan their own events. Ever-popular was the Hayseed Dance, where party-goers wore denim and plaid, and the Sock Hop, where everyone danced in their stocking feet.

Teens would cut a rug every other weekend between the hours of 9 p.m. and 1 a.m.

The clubs also gave an opportunity to connect with Teen Town members in other communities. The Clayton and Brookswood Teen Towns traded musical acts at each other’s dances, for instance,

and the Cloverdale Teen Town had a strong alliance with the White Rock and Ladner Teen Towns. An annual conference was held, bringing young leaders together to discuss what worked and what didn’t for their respective clubs.

As the movement grew, the clubs diversified their events. The Cloverdale and Clayton Teen Towns had a healthy sports portfolio, with ping pong and softball being the most-favoured activities. As teens found it costly to hire live music, they moved towards playing records instead — disc jockey competitions were born. Cloverdale’s

Fundraising for local charities such as the “March of Dimes” and local flood relief was also an important part of Teen Town activities.

It was not all without controversy. Cloverdale Teen Town took on the local merchants in May 1947 when the price of chocolate bars rose from five cents to eight cents. “Bring Back the Nickel Bars” protests could be seen throughout the main streets of Cloverdale.

Eventually, a compromise was met when

local merchants agreed to sell present stock at 5 cents, but the increase for future stock would have to stand.

The Teen Town platform provided a great source of education and collaboration for future leaders. In September 1949, Bob Bose was elected as Cloverdale’s Teen Town mayor in a foreshadow of things to come. Bose recalled he was the last Teen Town mayor to serve in the Opera House before it was lost to fire. He has fond memories of attending conferences where he was able to meet with other Teen Town officials who would also become leaders in their adult careers. One of Bose’s most notable connections would be with Ridge-Meadow’s Teen Town mayor Robert Mundell, who would later be awarded the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1999.

The Teen Town movement continued to provide a strong structure for teens until the late 1950s, when new community centres were built large enough to provide recreational activities for youth.

Surrey theatre company stages benefit show for youth program

If comedy is what people want, comedy’s what they’ll get.

This has become a rallying cry for Surrey-based Royal Canadian Theatre Company, which promises to bring “all comedy, all the way” to the stage over the next few years.

“We listened to what people tell us they want to see on stage,” said Ellie King, the company’s managing artistic director, “and they’ve told us very clearly that comedy – especially given all the dire news right now – is their number-one choice, and so that’s what we’re going to do.”

Fittingly, the company has planned a night of standup comedy to raise funds for its youth

mentorship program.

An “All in Good Fund” event is set for Wednesday, Sept. 25 at Elements Casino in Cloverdale, starting at 7 p.m. The benefit show will be headlined by comedy pro Simon King, who happens to be Ellie King’s son.

The fundraiser will be staged just a few weeks before Royal Canadian launches its 2019-20 theatre season with a production of Agatha Christie’s Spider’s Web, billed as “a humorous murder mystery” on the company’s website (rctheatreco.com).

The pre-Halloween show creeps into New Westminster’s Anvil Centre from Oct. 18 to 20 before shifting to Surrey Arts Centre on Oct. 25 and 26.

upcoming theatre season include Snow White, another Ellie King-written pantomime, in December and spring dates for Norm Foster’s Screwball Comedy. Play rehearsals are held at the company’s studio space at 10660 City Parkway, Surrey.

The company’s youth mentorship program, meanwhile, is a chance for kids to improve their co-ordination, build literacy skills, get a physical workout, make lifelong friends, become part of a fun and creative team and also show what they’ve learned in front of thousands of people, according to King.

“The program does all of this and more – often helping kids with issues such as anxiety, those on the spectrum or with be-

It’s time to lace up, Cloverdale. The annual Terry Fox Run, hosted by the Cloverdale Legion, is set for Sunday, Sept. 15.

Every year the local event raises tens of thousands of dollars for the Terry Fox Foundation, which supports cancer research across the country.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, nearly one in two Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer. Although mortality rates for all cancers combined continues to decline

across the country, it still remains the leading cause of death in Canada.

At the onset of the Marathon of Hope in 1980, Terry Fox’s goal was to raise $1 for every Canadian, for a total of $22 million. As of 2016, the Terry Fox Foundation had raised more than $715 million in his name.

Every year, hundreds of community-based run fundraisers held across the country and around the world raise millions of dollars — but it starts small, with neighbours headed down

to the local run to give what they can.

Registration for the Cloverdale event begins at 9 a.m., and the run starts at 10 a.m.

Participants can choose between a 1, 5 or 10-km route around downtown Cloverdale, and each route is accessible for bikes, wheelchairs and strollers. Dogs on leashes are welcome to walk with their owners.

The Cloverdale Legion is located at 17567 57th Avenue.

There was no shortage of volunteer worker bees, mason bees and, of course, a queen bee. A quick Waggle Dance lesson had the youngsters flapping, waggling and spinning in efforts to emulate busy bees collecting pollen for personal delivery to hives.

Hometown Hero Joyce Bazinet drives cancer patients to medical appointments throughout the Lower Mainland

knew that, in retirement, she wanted to continue giving back.

The Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society (VCDS) is a force of volunteers that provides free transportation to cancer patients throughout the Lower Mainland, ensuring that people have a safe ride to and from medical appointments.

Since VCDS began in February 2016, more than 200 volunteer drivers and dispatchers have given of 70,000 hours of their time to the program.

According to the organization, drivers have made about 46,000 trips, driving 1,373,000 km — that’s nearly 250 times the length of Canada.

“When I saw the [VCDS] in the paper, I thought, ‘this is it.

This is what I want to do,’” said Bazinet.

When she sat down with the Reporter to chat about her volunteer work as a driver for the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society, it was immediately clear that the joyful, energetic retiree genuinely enjoys her work with the society.

The “very happily” retired woman began her career as a psychiatric nurse, before later becoming a teacher’s assistant to work with students who had special needs.

“It gives me a great pleasure to be helping people again.”

“I’ll get teary here,” she said, with an emotional laugh. “I get so, so encouraged by the

courage, the bravery of these patients. You know they’re facing the hardest thing probably in their life, and we can still laugh in the car. We have great conversations.”

The conversation comes easily to her —

she’s had a long life of talking to people through good days and through challenges.

It can be as easy as asking ‘do you remember when?’ or asking them what they do for a living — “if nothing else, you can talk

about pets,” she said.

Others, she said, don’t want to talk at all. Which is perfectly fine, she emphasized.

“The real tragedy is, you have no idea how many people have no one to talk to. They don’t have family. They

don’t have friends.

They don’t even think they can ask their neighbour [to drive them].”

The conversation, and the support, is just as important as the actual drive, she said.

Many others use the service because family or friends cannot take them to weekly appointments over a long period of time — it can be prohibitive for a working person to take that much time off.

Bazinet’s brotherin-law called on the VCDS’ services during his own treatments.

His wife, Bazinet’s sister, was a teacher, and couldn’t take him to daytime appointments.

“I was glad that he knew, before he died, that somebody was [volunteering for the organization], as a thank you,” she said.

Bazinet volunteers four days a week, and typically drives between four and six patients to appointments over that period. The society volunteers wait for their patients while they’re at their appointments, and that can take up to five hours in some cases.

She has driven people from all walks of life to treatments in Vancouver, Surrey, Abbotsford and more. Each person has a story, and each is inspiring, she said.

“Every time they say thank you as they get out of the car, I say thank you back in my head. Because they’re giving me as much (as I give them).”

A ‘Love of Hockey Bursary’ among initiatives created by Cloverdale hockey association

As kids and parents in Cloverdale gear up for another hockey season, they continue to remember and pay tribute to a coach whose voice is no longer heard on the bench.

At the start of last season, Cloverdale Minor Hockey Association announced a number of initiatives to honour Paul Bennett.

Bennett, a married father of two, and an operating-room nurse department manager at Peace Arch Hospital, was shot to death outside his 67A Avenue home on June 23, 2018, in what police consider a case of mistaken identity. His killer is still on the loose.

This week, the results of efforts “to create an enduring legacy of the memo-

ry and spirit of our friend and coach” were made public by the Colts hockey organization, in addition to plans “to continue this work throughout the coming season,” the association said in a news release.

Special “P.B.” helmet stickers have been worn by hundreds of local hockey players, including members of Bennett’s adult hockey teams and those in other associations.

Also, donations were collected for the Paul Bennett Love of Hockey Bursary, with the total reaching more than $2,800, according to Deanna Cox, the association’s vice-president of administration.

“We also held the first annual Paul Bennett BLAST! Tournament – a celebration of all things hockey – for our

“We introduced another 46 kids to the sport we all love,” Cox said. “After that program, we

Vancouver Canucks pitched in to host the Bennett family for a game against Ottawa Senators, Paul’s favourite team.

“We are very grateful for all these efforts to make this season as smooth and enjoyable for Adam, his mom Darlene and his brother Owen,” Cox said.

“At the same time,” she added, “we watched Adam exhibit heart and determination throughout this past season. From tryouts through the final games of the year, we saw him work to make his Dad proud in his first-ever season without Paul as his Coach. As a result, Adam was voted by the membership to be our ‘Most Inspiring Player’ for the 2018-2019 season.”

mer, the association sponsored a hole and participated in the inaugural Paul Bennett Memorial Golf Tournament.

That event raised an additional $4,000 for the bursary fund, in addition to funds for Peace Arch Hospital and a RCMP-administered fund for victims of crime.

This season, the Canucks have become title sponsor of the First Shift program.

“We are also excited to continue to see more and more kids come into the game, including many new Canadians, and we hope to continue to grow our association and spread the love of hockey in Paul’s name,” Cox said.

“We have already had to add teams to many divisions this season, and registration is ongoing for kids aged five to 12.”

Two Special Olympians with roots in Surrey will skate into the spotlight of a cross-Canada tour this fall.

Marc Theriault and Alexandra Magee are among Special Olympics athletes invited to perform during Rock the Rink skating shows that will feature Olympic gold-medalists Scott Moir, Tessa Virtue and Patrick Chan.

At each stop on the 31-city tour, an individual with an intellectual disability will skate solo during the show, in a partnership with Special Olympics Canada. The news is posted to specialolympics.ca.

Theriault will skate at Abbotsford Centre on Oct. 5, while Magee will perform at Penticton’s South Okanagan Events Centre on Oct. 6. Other B.C.-based Special Olympians invited to perform on the tour include Vancouver’s Alexander Pang (at UBC’s Thunderbird Arena on Oct. 7) and Dawson Creek resident Darlene Jakubowski (at her city’s Encana Events Centre on Oct. 11 and 12).

A former Surrey resident, Theriault now lives in North Delta and is a decade-long Special Olympics athlete in multiple sports. In 2018 he was inducted into Special Olympics B.C.’s Hall of Fame.

As for Magee, she once called Surrey home but has lived in Kelowna for the past few years, according to Megan Pollock, communications manager for Special Olympics British Columbia.

Moir, Virtue and Chan are members of Special Olympics Canada’s Champions Network, described as “a dedicated group of Canadian Olympians, pro-

fessional athletes and celebrities who support and promote the movement and the transformative power sport brings to Canadian children, youth and adults with an intellectual disability.”

According to the website post, the trio of skaters were inspired to include Special Olympics athletes in Rock the Rink after attending the 2018 Special

Olympics Canada National Awards Night, an annual event that honours athletes, coaches, volunteers and supporters from across the country.

Pre-season games have begun for Vancouver Giants, who were in Everett at the Angel of the Winds Arena to face Seattle, Portland and Spokane in a trio of daytime battles from Friday to Sunday (Aug. 31 to Sept 1).

The WHL team will return to Langley Events Centre on Friday, Sept.

6 for a pre-season game against Victoria, followed by exhibition matches against Prince George (Sept. 7) and Kamloops (Sept. 8).

The Giants’ 19th season will start for real on Sept.

20, on the road in Prince George.

The team’s home-opener is on Friday, Sept. 27 against Portland. That night, the Giants will raise two new banners to the rafters of the arena in Langley, and fans in attendance will receive mini collectible B.C. Division banners.

The Giants will play 68 regular-season games this season – 34 at home and 34 on the road.
