MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE NORTH ISLAND CRUISERS – Corby Lamb
I want to welcome everyone to our annual Labor Day Show. As you know last year was a great success and we expect this year’s attendance to exceed last year’s. The club has worked very hard to make this the best show yet. Don’t forget to attend the cruise on Saturday as it’s always a lot of fun, especially for the folks who line the route. This year we are going to have prizes for the best cruise route - display or party, so make sure you gather your neighbors and have a good time. I look forward to seeing you all on the Saturday cruise and at the Sunday show.
1929 Ford Model A The life of a 50 year old Town Sedan Corvette
I purchased the Model A as a barn find, unseen over the phone, the only thing was that it had to be picked up within the next two weeks.
but up grade the drive train to a more modern drivable vehicle.
January 2008 the temperature was minus 29F and snowing, not a fun time to trailer an old car back to B.C. from Sask.
The Model A was repowered with a 200 inline 6 cylinder Ford motor automatic transmission and a Mustang rear end the 4 link suspension. The steering was also changed to a modern type with disc brakes.
After a few years of thinking what to do the Model A, it was decided to make it look orginal
The old Ford drives great and most of all is dependable. The old FORD turns 90 years old this year.
Life started with a dentist that worked for General Motors in St. Louis, next to the Corvette Plant. He purchased two Corvettes, a convertible and a coupe at the same time. He loved the roadster so the coupe rarely got driven. The dentist’s good friend who worked for Alaska Airlines in St. Louis got a transfer to head office in Seattle. Upon leaving, the dentist agreed to sell the coupe
to him. The car was then transported to it’s new home in Seattle and because of his new job, the car was put into storage, in a barn. Years later the car would not start and it was hauled off to the Seattle swap meet, where I purchased the Corvette. I brought it back to Campbell River to be restored. Believe it or not - this car has only 22,649 orginal miles!

Patti & I have had our ’40 Ford for over 28 years and still love it. We also have the ’37 Ford that I originally bought when I was 14 years old (it’s an unfinished project). So adding another old car had to have a reason. When we got married in 1966, we had the use of a Buick Riviera for our wedding car. So John Peter, another North Island Cruisers member, shows me a picture of a 1964 Buick Riviera saying it was
for sale, it was fate… we had to have it. I should also mention that both our ’40 Ford and ’37 Ford have 425 Buick engines, just like the Riviera. The Riviera is a 57,000 mile survivor. The interior is just like new. The rest of the car is in great shape, but it deserves a new paint job, which we will make happen this winter. We’ve already had some great times cruising in the “Riv”. It sure is fun being a little car crazy!

Everything from Doorslammers to Junior Dragsters will be at the Vancouver Island MotorSports Association (VIMSA) display at this year’s Show and Shine. VIMSA is working hard to get a permanent safe place to race on the Island.
Drag racing is a family sport. Kids can start at age 5 in the Junior Dragster class, and there are competitors that are active in the sport that are in their 80’s! Drag racing has more participants worldwide than any other type of motorsports… the average street driven vehicle can compete. Drag racing is a test of acceleration from a dead stop, to the end of an eighth or quarter mile. Reaction time and consistency are more important than the speed of the vehicle. A handicap system makes all types of vehicles able to compete effectively. A recent economic impact study commissioned by the City of Campbell River indicates the estimated annual economic
impact of a facility is: • direct local impact $1,975,000 • indirect $2.2 million • provincially $3 million Unfortunately, the Campbell River Airport location that was proposed will not go ahead. Here’s a quote from the City’s news release on April 12, 2019: “Considering both the anticipated economic benefits of motorsport racing events in Campbell River, and the challenges related to developing a facility adjacent to the airport, Council has decided not to

pursue the use of the airport land for a drag strip and has directed staff to work with the Vancouver Island Motor Sport Association (VIMSA) to explore options for alternative locations”. VIMSA worked with the City on the “Drag Racing Facility Select Committee” to find and evaluate land options for a potential drag racing facility in the Campbell River area but were unable to come up with a suitable location. We have, however, identified a privately-owned property located south of Campbell River that may be a good fit. It’s very early in this

The car did make a couple trips to California and Disneyland before I started a frame off back in 2000. The car was completely restored to original factory specs with some extra factory options that where found and added to the car. The car does go to car shows on the island and to our NIC Show and Shine Labour Day Sunday every year. The car is a fair weather car and does not like rain and stays home on those days. The Campbell River British Car Club was organized in September 29, 1993 with 16 founding members. The club is now in it’s 25th Anniversary year with more than 50 active members. We are open to anyone who has a British car or who has an interest in them. Members meet weekly between 9 and 11 a.m., Wednesday mornings at Serious Coffee in Willow Point. 1968 Plymouth Sport Satellite This is my 1968 Plymouth Sport Satellite. In 1968 there were only 1900 Sport Satellites configured like this one. 383 cu. in. HP engine 335 horse power. While cruising on long runs it will get 18 MPG. Very good for a big block car. 3 Speed Torqflite transmission to a Suregrip 3:23 rear differential. The interior of the car is still the original as built.

1964 Mercury M 100

The Mercury M Series was a series of pickup trucks that was marketed by the Mercury division of Ford Motor Company. These trucks were produced from 1946 until 1968 and were sold primarily in Canada. This 1964 M 100 was from a farm in Prince George and had the engine and transmission removed when I purchased it in Nanaimo. It has been repowered with a 1990 Ford 5 lt V8 and AOD automatic.The front brakes have
been converted to power disc. A Toyota 4x4 power steering box has been installed. The leaf springs have been rebuilt with the front eyes reversed. The rear end is a Dana 44 with locking 3:54 gears.
