Giving back for over 80 years Long-time Mission resident and community volunteer Doreen Phelps has been in Mission for more than 80 years. She has seen many changes to her beloved community over the past decades, but says the people, for the most part, haven’t changed. She calls Mission a close-knit community filled with people who want to give back. For more see page B2

More than 80 years of loving Mission Few people have lived in Mission as long as Doreen Phelps. The 83-year-old (84 in August) has lived here for more than 80 years. Born in Saskatchewan, she arrived in
B.C. and Mission at six months of age. “I’ve only been away from Mission for two years and that was in Stewart, B.C. – which is right on the Alaska border – because that’s where my husband went to work.” Her first child was also born in Stewart,
but apart from that, Mission has been her life. Through the decades, Phelps says she has seen plenty of changes, some good, some not so good. “The people have not really changed. They’ve always been very communi-
ty-minded. I’ve been in touch with so many volunteers.” She remembers the wooden sidewalks in the downtown area and the flood of ’48 and some of the smaller changes that many people don’t think about. “I remember having

the first fridge, before my mom and dad, as a matter of fact.” One change that she said is a big disappointment was when the Eaton’s department store left Mission. She had worked for Eaton’s for a combined 33 years. “I can’t believe that I was here when things were so different.” Her sense of community spirit and volunteering began at an early age. Phelps began volunteering at the age of about 12. Her mother volunteered at various events at the local Legion, including dances. Not wanting to leave her daughter alone at home, Phelps would come along to the events. “I did not complain, because at these dances were all these people from Silverdale – like the Donatelli boys – who taught me how to do the square dance … I never complained once. I had all these men to dance with and I was 12-13 going on 17-18. So it was all to my advantage,” Phelps said. Over time, she became involved in many local groups, including the Mission branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Mission Hospital Auxiliary, the Mission Arts Council – including organizing the annual Christmas
Long-time Mission resident Doreen Phelps stands beside family friend Ken Selvaraja. Phelps has been an active volunteer for most of her life and enjoys giving back to the community. KEVIN MILLS PHOTO Craft Market – and the Miss Mission Pageant, first held in 1957, to name just a few. Her dedication to the legion led to a humorous incident. One day, as Phelps was volunteering at the legion, she was told that her husband applied to become a member. This seemed odd to Phelps because he wasn’t a veteran and would be applying as an “ordinary” member. “I was surprised so I asked what reason he put on the application. It was so he could see his wife once in awhile.” While she has always been an active volunteer, it was 17 years ago that Phelps really

decided she wanted to give something back. “I was only retired for probably four years or so and they detected I had lung cancer.” After weeks and months of radiation, doctors told her she was in remission and gave her five years. “I told them that wasn’t good enough. I want 25.” It was after her remission that she decided she had to start giving back even more. “I had a positive attitude, and why wouldn’t I? I was given this time and, as the years passed by, I thought, ‘I have to say thank you.’ ” One of her inspirations was Sandra Selvaraja, who was a head nurse and knew
about Phelps’ previous community involvement “She really put me into her family actually, because she already had them trained. They are so into giving, volunteering and helping. She was a huge inspiration.” Today, Phelps said she is a little disheartened by the huge use of cellphones and other electronic devices, especially with young people. “There’s not enough communication. I walk down main street now and I don’t see anybody I know and nobody says hello.” And finding young people to volunteer is a challenge. “They have no idea about volunteering. There are some youth groups out there and some kids who volunteer, but too much electronics. We’re going to lose the community feeling,” Phelps said. Asked whether she volunteers as much now as she did when she was younger, Phelps didn’t hesitate to answer. “Yes. As a matter of fact, I’m worse. I want to stay that way because I’m very afraid if I stop, I might really stop,” she said with a laugh. “Fun to me is volunteering.” 8617984

asweage Stewardship blooms in Mission’s gardens
How do you integrate the personal pride, knowledge and dedication of local property owners with opportunities for recognition, extended learning, outdoor enjoyment, sharing and community involvement? Mission Communities In Bloom Committee and many of its supporters pulled together all of these through Showcase Gardens Program, a new and friendly local garden competition using standard yet flexible scoring developed by senior gardening experts. Programactivitiesprovidedforfriendlyvisitsandgatherings involving numerous local DIY gardeners, growers, property owners and gardening experts. MCiB’s six contracted visiting teams had the pleasure and honour of viewing and appreciating gardeners’ and growers’ sanctuaries for one week in early July. Much was gained by all who registered and volunteered - so much that the actual scoring proved to be secondary. The privilege of entering privately owned cultivated settings rather than just driving by allowed for the trained viewing teams to experience 42 beautifullykeptandcultivatedprivateoutdoorspaces. There were awards and rewards, and an information-packed celebration evening, Mission’s Wow Factor Showcase Event which was held on July 17th. The program continues with related ongoing garden showcasing through social media. Viewings revealed gardens of amazing diversity in size, style and focus, providing for observation and appreciation of many perspectives among enthusiastic property stewards. There was much to be observed that was rooted in particular gardening passions and personal convictions, with stewardship objectives covering countless different aspects and important personal values. Photos and notes described numerous expressions as to what makes the perfect outdoor sanctuary or food garden, and many of these will be featured on the Mission Communities in Bloom Facebook page along with a more detailed report on the program. Choosing winners proved to be very challenging! The three winning entries were exceptional, yet all the registered gardens had extraordinary features and attributes. Based on individual votes, the top prize for MCiB’s Wow Factor winner went to Monika Dowker (first prize); two runners-up are Yvonne and Chuck Watson; and equally, Al and Deborah Lafontaine. MCiB thanks all contributors and participants, and can be reached by email at comminbloom@gmail.com.

There are over 100 different types of arthritis affecting all races, genders, and ages, caused by various mechanisms, but the most common type of arthritis affecting many adults is osteoarthritis. It causes long-term disability in adults due to pain and altered joint function. WHAT IS OSTEOARTHRITIS? The place where 2 bones meet is normally covered with a rubbery material called cartilage. It was previously thought to be due to simply “wear and tear” of the joint cartilage, but it is now known that it is much more complex than that. The term osteoarthritis has “itis” which means inflammation. There is inflammation of the joints which is followed by loss of the articular cartilage and abnormal bone formation which causes the symptoms. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? Symptoms are gradual and take months to years to develop. • Initially, people usually get minimal morning stiffness in the affected joints. • As the disease progresses, it is followed by stiffness and pain in the joints with activity. • There is usually bony enlargement, crepitus with movement and limitation of motion. Almost any joint can be involved but it most commonly affects the hands, knees, hips and spine. WHO IS AT RISK OF GETTING OSTEOARTHRITIS? There are multiple risk factors that may cause osteoarthritis. These are: • Previous injury to the joint • Repeated stress on the joint • Overweight • Family history • Older age WHAT CAN I DO TO IMPROVE THE SYMPTOMS? Some steps you can do to prevent symptoms from getting worse are: • Rest for several minutes when your pain is at the worst. • Lose weight (if you are overweight) • Physical therapy and exercise to strengthen the muscles • Use shoe inserts, splints, canes, etc. to help your joints with stability WHY IS EXERCISING BENEFICIAL IN OSTEOARTHRITIS? Many people with arthritis do not exercise often because of joint pain or weakness, but it can be broken down into two to four 10-minute sessions per day to avoid too much discomfort. • Moving your joints everyday through a full range of motion can maintain flexibility and slow deterioration of cartilage. If your knees are affected, bend and extend them as far as you comfortably can. • Strengthening exercises can be helpful as strong muscles help protect the painful joints and maintain balance, thus preventing falls. • Low impact activities such as biking, swimming and tai chi are very helpful.
HOW CAN I PROTECT MY JOINTS WHILE EXERCISING? • Walk on at, level surfaces. • Wear supportive footwear such as athletic shoes with good cushioning to reduce impact on your hips and knees. • Listen to your body and never ignore pain. A sign that you have exercised too much is that your joint hurts longer than 2 hours. • Pay attention to posture and alignment WHAT TREATMENT OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE? As there is no cure for osteoarthritis, the treatment goals are to: reduce pain, maintain joint mobility, and limit functional disability. Some options include: • Some medicines help reduce the pain and some help reduce the swelling. These include pills, creams and gels that you can put on your skin to reduce pain. There are steroid injections you can get in your joints to help with pain as well. • There is no strong evidence that any supplements help with the arthritis, including glucosamine and chondroitin. • When other treatment options are not helping, some people benefit from getting a surgery such as getting a surgery to replace a knee or a hip. Osteoarthritis is the leading cause of longterm disability, so it is very important to educate ourselves about the multi-modal approach available to limit disability, reduce pain and improve self-management. *Always talk to your doctor before beginning an exercising program. – DR. What every older Canadian should know about
Grocery Shopping Done With a Click! Online Shopping Is Easy!
INcomE AND BENEFITS FRom GovERNmENT PRoGRAmS TIPS AND SAFEGUARDS You must apply for OAS, GIS, the Allowance, CPP and other federal programs. You will not receive them automatically. Because many programs use your income-tax return to decide if you are eligible, you should file a tax return by April 30 each year even if you have no income to report. This will also allow you to claim a GST rebate and other refundable tax credits. If you are receiving OAS, GIS, the Allowance or CPP and you move or your situation changes (eg. the death of your spouse), contact Service Canada by calling 1-800-277-9914 (TTY-1-800-255-4786) as soon as possible. To find out if you are eligible for a program, write or call and speak to someone that works in the government. Do not rely only on what you hear from neighbours or friends.
Where can I find out more? For more information, visit www.seniors.gc.ca , visit your local Service Canada office or call 1 800 O-Canada (1-800-622-6232), TTY: 1-800-926-9105.
