THE ALDERGROVE STAR 3

A Message from Township of Langley Mayor Welcome Message from Township of Langley Mayor Jack Froese Hello Aldergrove residents and welcome visitors! It’s that time of year again, as Aldergrove becomes a hub of activity and people from throughout the region come out to enjoy some fun in the country at one of BC’s oldest and most loved fairs. Aldergrove Fair Days has been bringing people together to enjoy activities for all ages and to pay tribute to the land and those who sustain it for more than a century. The 107th annual Aldergrove Fair Days will celebrate 50 years since the moon landing with the theme “Aldy on the Moon,” and from July 19 to 21, the community will be treated to some out of this world entertainment and plenty to see, do, and enjoy. Whether it’s live

music, including iconic Canadian rock band, Loverboy, fair food, the Show ‘n Shine, or Fairyland that brings you down, make a point of spending a day – or two or three – with your family and friends at this unique celebration. Take in some friendly competition at the Chili Cook Off and the Canadian Fast Draw Championships, and see the showcase of talented bakers, canners, crafters, and gardeners whose entries will be featured at the exhibit. Plus, be sure to get your collectible Aldy doll. People who have made a difference where they live will be recognized during the Community Service Awards, and we thank the recipients for their dedication and effort. We would also like to thank the Aldergrove Festival Days Society, the Aldergrove Agricultural Association, and

the numerous volunteers, businesses, and participants who bring this great event to life year after year. We truly appreciate all they do to keep the fun going at the Fair! On behalf of Township of Langley Council, enjoy the 107th annual Aldergrove Fair Days!

The President’s Message Work for the Weekend! Barracuda will be opening for Loverboy while a dozen other bands and musicians from Celtic to Rock N Roll will be entertaining the crowds. This is the place to see and be seen!

Another 50 Years to Celebrate and this time we’re going to the moon! On July 20th 1969, Neil Armstrong and crew landed on the moon and went for their famous walkabout. On July 20th 2019, Aldergrove Fair is inviting you to take your own walkabout as Aldergrove Fair celebrates our theme “Aldy on The Moon!”

We also have a wonderful stage set up at the Kidzone setup specifically for the young at heart. There are too many activities to mention but I will tell you there will be facepainting, balloons, magicians, music and some reptiles for those a bit more adventurous!

Each year we strive to best the events, displays and fun from year before and our 2019 version is looking to be the greatest of all. We will be bringing in our traditional favourites: such as World Championship Fastdraw, Antique Tractor Pull, KidZone, Agricultural Exhibits while adding in Moonland with a to-scale replica of the Apollo Rocket and a huge array of space facts and artifacts. I hear rumours there will be “moon pies!”

by donation! We won’t turn away anyone and invite everyone!

I could write an entire newspaper on everything you will see and do at the Aldergrove Fair but I need to leave room for others. Let me simply say that there will be strange machines, wonderful music, games, food and beverages to fill three days of incredible activities and adventure. Each day has different events and activities so you’re most welcome to come all three days!

On the main stage we will have ongoing music and entertainment throughout the weekend. We are especially proud to present our Saturday Night Headliner: LOVERBOY … and you can be sure we will be setting them loose so they can

And the best part is: Admission is

In closing I would like to say that it is an honour to be a part of this amazing event and I look forward to seeing you at the Fair! Aldergrove Fair will open at 5pm on Friday, July 19 2019 and close at 4pm on July 21 in the fields behind Aldergrove Secondary School at 26850 29th Avenue. 3… 2… 1… blast off for the Aldergrove Fair! Opening Ceremonies The 107th annual Aldergrove Fair Days will look a lot less country and a lot more galactic this year, as it celebrates the 1969 moon landing of NASA spacecraft Apollo 11 and its team of scientists, astronauts and employees. This year, a special “Moonland” exhibit, featuring an employee of NASA during the historic moon landing Gladys Kirkland will be a focal point of the festivities. The Fair Days celebration will open with a 21-gun salute by the Aldergrove-based Thunderbird Fast Draw Club folks on July 20 at 1pm. Dignitaries, including representatives of the

Kwantlen First Nation and local politicians will greet the fairgoers, and will present awards for Aldergrove’s top adult and junior volunteers. Families can scope out Kirkland’s original signed photo collection from back in the day and try their hand at space-related science experiments, including the creation of moon food by growing a vegetable inside of a soda bottle! An Apollo 11 rocket model will also bring the fairgrounds to life, and moonpies will be available to eat among other tasty treats available for purchase.

Aldy the Astronaut Aldergrove Fair’s mascot has come to life as a collectible figurine thanks to two new residents in town.

said fair committee member Mike Robinson.“ Now he’s ready for his moonwalk.”

Aldy – a little guy with a round head and a big smile – has dressed up for posters and flyers around town for the past 18 years.

Julie began making teddy bears and dolls as a hobby more than 20 years ago in South Korea and collected bears from other artists in countries including U.S., Scotland, Germany, South Africa, and even Canada.

This year, at the Fair, he will be available in the form of a plush doll. Specialist doll makers Julie Ko and Charlie Oh of Bearga Gallery in Fort Langley designed and constructed Aldy in a reflective space suit for this year’s theme – ‘Aldy on the Moon,’ which pays homage to the 1969 moon landing. The married artist duo recently moved to Aldergrove. “Aldy’s been a farmer, a fireman, sapper, a Beatle, Elvis, an old-timer, a carnival clown and many more” colourful representatives,

“The material we used to make Aldy is imported from South Korea. It feels very soft and cuddly, so people will love to hold him,” Julie said. More information on how to purchase an Aldy doll can be found at aldergrovefair.ca.

By 2010, her collection was so large that the couple had enough to open their own “museum,” and her husband quit his job as an English teacher to assist her. Their children came to Canada as students and the pair followed suit in 2012 with their vast collection of more than 300 dolls. “This is where we want to be – a clean, green environment, a career in handcrafts that we love and most of all, a culture that loves teddy bears,” Julie said.

NASA’s own showcased at the fair Fifty years ago this month, the first humans stepped foot on the moon, and as they did it, a team rallied behind them at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Gladys Kirkland, 90, was one of them – an employee of NASA for 20 years, working as a financial bookkeeper for the federal space administration. Kirkland will be on site as a part of the fair’s special “Moonland” exhibit. Here, she will unveil her personal collection of original signed NASA photographs and share tidbits about her personal friendships and experiences during the launch. The themed-instalment will also boast an Apollo 11 model, delectable moon pies for purchase, the fair’s mascot Aldy as an astronaut doll, and interactive science experiments for participants of all ages, all relating to space. Born in the deep South on a plantation in Grande Isle, Kirkland now lives just over the Aldergrove border crossing in Lynden. “A good part of [her] life” – Kirkland describes the lead up to the moon landing a “busy” time, and especially during the

historic 1969 mission. “I started a contract with $50,000 in the 1960s and I wound up at the end of the year with $100,000,” explained Kirkland about reimbursing a third-party company for its work on the Apollo 11 spacecraft. Kirkland remembers accounting for another $6 million over the span of years leading up to the moon landing – a sum that translates to a lot more in this day and age, she said. “I did that with a pencil and a pad, no computers,” Kirkland remarked. Kirkland said she gave American astronaut Neil Armstrong somewhere around $24 when he went off on his mission to the moon. This was because “everything was finished – he didn’t have to buy food, lodging, or anything,” Kirkland explained.

NASA’s own showcased at the fair Armstrong later used that money for his taxi fare back to NASA’s Houston headquarters, Kirkland chuckled. “It was an exciting time for us. We had a lot of stuff going on, lots of money being spent – millions and millions of dollars,” Kirkland said about NASA in 1969. Over a reported six days, Armstrong jetted off and took the legendary first two steps on the moon.

Eventually, radio connection was restored to the spacecraft and a huge sigh of relief travelled through scientist dispatchers at mission control as an astronaut replied: “Apollo 11 to mission control.” Hear this story and more at this year’s fair, which will pay tribute to the 50th anniversary of the very first steps on the moon.

Kirkland and the rest of NASA’s finance department employees were freed up from work long enough to be able to see the entire journey from the federal agency’s auditorium. “Listen – you never heard such screaming,” Kirkland said about roars of excitement from NASA as the duo – which included astronaut Buzz Aldrin – walked on the moon. “It was a first time thing… and we all wondered: Were they coming back?” Kirkland admitted. She also recalls witnessing scientists at Mission Control Centre lose Apollo 11 for nearly two hours as the spacecraft made its way around the moon. “This is Houston, where are you Apollo? Answer me!” Kirkland recounted them shouting.

Nicholson family does it again Sponsoring free mainstage concerts for the Fair The Nicholson family, owners of Super Steve’s Tires, covered the costs of Aldergrove Fair days concerts once again this year. The Nicholson Group of Companies financially covered all the costs of the mainstage concerts at the Aldergrove Fair for the previous three years, starting with the headliner act Chilliwack, followed by Trooper, and 54-40 just last year. The group is continuing it’s tradition by sponsoring this year’s mainstage entertainment, featuring headliners Loverboy on July 20 at 8pm. The concerts and the opening acts are extremely well-attended, and are free of charge to all who enjoyed the shows, thanks to the Nicholson family’s contributions to the community.

Canadian rock band Loverboy will hit the main stage Saturday at 8pm for two hours of classic hits.

Local rock band Where We Wander will return again this year to perform at 4:15pm on Saturday.

A Cars tribute band, Moving in Stereo, will play In tandem with the showcase of classic cars in the ACSS parking lot at 6pm on Friday.

Loverboy headlines the Aldergrove Fair Free concert series Loverboy, a group with a record six Juno awards in 1982 and over 10 million albums sold, are coming to play in town on July 20 for the 107th annual Aldergrove Fair. The entire weekend of July 19-21 will feature live music on the main stage, with bands covering classic rock to blues music. The music at the Fair is once again put on by Aldergrove’s Nicholson Group of Companies and Super Steve’s Tire and Mechanical, which sponsored previous free headliner concerts at the Fair by classic rock band 54-40 last year. The headliner shows are free admission, however, there is a legal limit on the audience size so concert-goers should get there early to ensure they have a spot before the gates are closed. There are porta-potties within the concert area as well as a variety of foods and beverages available, including the Aldergrove Legion’s beer and wine garden. The Aldergrove Fair grounds are at the Harry Hunt Fields behind the Kinsmen Community Centre, located at 26770 29th Ave. Free parking is available in the adjacent Aldergrove Community Secondary School parking lot.

JULY 2019

The main stage concert series begins on Friday, July 19 at 5pm with the edgy alt-rock band The Fallaways taking the stage. In tandem with the Show N’ Shine of classic cars in the ACSS parking at 6pm a Cars tribute band, Moving in Stereo as well as Eagle Eyes will liven up the fairgrounds. During this time, fair-goers can wander to and fro and take in the vintage vehicles on display. The music continues from 10am Saturday, featuring Brian Zalo, Bruce Coghlan and Rawhide Bones in hourly sets until opening ceremonies at 1pm. The live musical performances will then continue with local rockers Tracy Bosch Band and two other gigs – broken up by Country Cuties dancers performances, plus The Charltan’s and Where We Wander performing at 3:15pm and 4:15pm. Then, a Heart tribute band called Barracuda performs from 5:45 to 7pm, before Loverboy takes the stage for the evening’s headliner show, 8 to 10pm.

Canadian rock band Loverboy — inducted into Canada’s Hall of Fame in 2009 — formed in Calgary in 1978 and have been performing at rock festivals around the world ever since. Their latest album “Eighties Junkie” released in 2014. In 1989, Loverboy was named one of the top-five grossing touring acts in the world, having performed in over 100 cities across Canada and the U.S. This band’s list of big hits include: “Working for the Weekend,” as well as, “Lovin’ Every Minute of It,” “This Could Be the Night,” “The Kid is Hot,” “Turn Me Loose,” “Heaven In Your Eyes” and “Queen of the Broken Hearts.” On Sunday, mainstage performances will begin as traditional “Cowboy Church” features musician Garth Johannesson at 9am and continue on with a Sunday Blues Festival featuring James “Buddy” Rogers, Molten Blues band and special guest “David ‘Boxcar” Gate. The concert series will be at no cost to the public.

Fair Days Show n’ Shine There’ll be hot rods cruisin’ over and cleaned up classics coming in. On Friday, the Show n’ Shine car show kicks off Aldergrove Fair Days for the 10th year in a row. With a life-long interest in cars, a family of racers at her side, and a membership in a vintage British motorcycle club, Aldergrove resident Patty Bennett has been a natural fit as the show’s organizer – almost right since the beginning.

No prizes to be won either, though the first 75 to arrive get an aluminum dash plaque to commemorate their involvement in the Show n’ Shine. The event is simply about showing off unique rides and getting to chat with other car lovers. “Sometimes there are military vehicles from the museum here in Aldergrove,” Bennett explained. “I know there have been tanks before. Sometimes there’s tractors. Mostly old cars, modified cars – there will be a drag car the high school students at Aldergrove Secondary have been working on – and a race car from Agassiz.”

“This is the 10th year,” Bennett said. “It’s just a show ‘n shine for people of Aldergrove and Langley and the surrounding area to enjoy.” The showcase will be held at Aldergrove Community Secondary School. Anyone interested in participating should be parked before 5pm while spectators and enthusiasts are welcome to wander between 6 and 9pm Friday evening.

Along with vehicles of all makes and models, there will be food trucks and live music – Eagle Eyes, an Eagles tribute band, and Moving in Stereo, fittingly, a Cars tribute band.

There is no registration form or even a fee to enter – people can just show up with their vintage Volkswagen’s and retro Rolls-Royce’s.

People can find out more information on the Show n’ Shine and the fair at www.aldergrovefair.ca.

“I hope everyone comes,” Bennett said.

Chili Cook-Off In keeping with a long-standing fair tradition, the ‘best chili in the Valley’ cook-off returns Sunday with competitors cooking up a storm from 10am until judging at 2pm. Chefs of all skill levels are encouraged to experiment with ingredients and flavours of their wishing.

The public is invited to taste-test completed chili dishes and vote for who should snag the ‘people’s choice’ title for their chili. Entry fee for teams is only $25, and the public joins in sampling and judging the chili contestants after 2pm at no charge.

“We all think we’re great chili chefs,” remarked organizer and Langley Township Councillor Bob Long, who proudly took ‘best chili’ title four years in a row alongside Walter Levy in the late 1980’s. Long encourages new teams to enter in the annual Aldergrove Fair Days chili cook-off and show off their family’s best kept secret recipes. Three award categories this year are: best chili, people’s choice and best team spirit (i.e. costumes and decorations).

Military Vehicles on Display

Maj. Ian Newby stands beside his Huey helicopter that was shot down 5 times during the Vietnam War.

One of the most popular displays of the annual Aldergrove Fair is the ever-changing collection of military vehicles on show by International Movie Services (IMS), a provider of props for the burgeoning film industry.

regiment was stationed across the road from my grandmother’s house,” he explained.

The man in charge – IMS company founder and retired officer Maj. Ian Newby of the Canadian Armed Forces, decides each year what to display for fair-goers.

His grandmother adopted many of the Canadian soldiers during the wartimes. After, she travelled to visit Canada and stayed with them, Newby said.

Apart from items as diverse as a nuclear warhead, an Argentinian Gelandewagen from the 1982 Falklands war, an agricultural Iltis ambulance, a Huey helicopter and a M109A4 tank – IMS also has upwards of 10,000 military uniforms.

“One of the soldiers became an immigration agent and in 1953 my family arrived in Quebec on an emigrant ship,” Newby explained of his journey to North America.

Previously, his company has been involved in over 5,000 productions, including supplying films Deadpool 2, Saving Private Ryan, and CBC television series the Murdoch Mysteries with well-preserved military equipment. Newby was born in England, but immigrated to Canada in 1953.

International Movie Services, a provider of props for the burgeoning film industry, will showcase a collection of military vehicles at this year’s Fair.

Newby’s family lived in Thames Valley, England where German bombers “would fly right over on their way to London,” Newby retold.

“It’s why I joined the Canadian army. I had a debt to repay,” Newby emphasized. Thus, the retired soldier created IMS, which also provides vehicles, props and costumes to community events such as the fair, where veterans and volunteers educate the public about their former use. Only Newby knows which vehicles he will bring to the fair on July 20 and July 21 this year. Come check it out!

Canadian Fast Draw Championships With a Special Salute to Mark Warawa

Local celebs and avid gun slingers alike are preparing for the annual fast draw showdown that takes place at the Fair. World Blank Fast Draw Championship event, sanctioned by the World Fast Draw Association and organized by Aldergrove’s Thunderbird Fast Draw Club, pits men and women of all ages against each other in a race against time.

In Warawa’s honour, the club will hold a six-gun salute to the beloved politician and family man at noon on Saturday, which the public is encouraged to attend. “Doing a salute is different,” Robinson explained. We’ll face a backdrop, raise our guns in the air and point them high into the heavens as they fire – for Mark.” Langley residents Nicole Franks and Shawn Murphy will also display their speedy draws, but during the championship round.

Each shooter is equipped with a single-action, six-shooter gun that when a light signals they must grab from their holster and shoot at a target.

Franks is defending first place in the Women’s championship and Murphy currently ranks number two for World’s in the men’s division.

Timers separate the winners of the various divisions. Starting on Saturday, well-known figures including MLA Rich Coleman will strap up and face-off at noon in a celebrity shoot-off. In previous years, Langley-Aldergrove late MP Mark Warawa became a staple shooter who even purchased his own holster to return with each year. Club director Den Robinson, said Warawa asked to participate again this year, before his untimely death due to cancer in June.

Ingredients

Both will compete Saturday at 10am for the main draw, as well as Sunday at 11am for a double-targeted draw, where shooters will have less than one second to shoot both targets. After Sunday’s competition, shooters in various divisions will gather for a final awards ceremony. The fast draw events are sponsored by the Township of Langley.

Antique Tractor Pull Returns Competitors young and old

Beginning at noon on Saturday and Sunday, a lawnmower pull competition will turn into heavy-duty tractor level pulls as tractor owners attempt a “full pull” across the field. Some of Langley’s youngest and most eager tractor-pulling competitors will be there.

The family now owns four garden tractors and one bigger tractor. For Jessica – the Kleiberg’s youngest daughter, tractor pulling is “a fun hobby and a chance to spend time with Dad.”

The story of Jay and Michelle Kleiberg-Turko and family, is a story of the progress for the Fraser Valley Antique Tractor Pullers Association (FVATP).

The daughter had a dual triumph last year when she and her cousin, Hunter, both pulled a “full pull” on the big tractor in an open contest, completing the track without once getting stuck, Kleiburg explained.

Kleiberg was told by a friend about a new class of tractors added to pulling competitions.

Together they placed first, in a tie against each other, beating out a number of adult competitors.

“In 2014, members of the club recognized they were getting older and needed to create more accessible tractor categories that would be more economical to own and carry to the pulls,” club representative Sandy Hope explained.

“I was pulling a wheelie nearly the whole way,” 17-year-old Hunter said with a grin.

Jessica, the Kleiberg’s youngest daughter, will compete in this year’s tractor pull competition.

The obvious answer was the garden tractor, and according to Hope, they are readily available as older models are often left to rust in the back corners of yards. As Kleiberg put it – “I had a couple of garden tractors that had been parked for 25 years under a bush so I tinkered a bit and got one of them going again.” The first time Kleiberg tried driving the garden tractor, him and his wife were overjoyed. “We were having fun driving so I badgered the kids to try it,” his wife, Michelle, added, “soon, we were warmly welcomed by the club and hooked from then on.”

The origins of the Fraser Valley Antique Tractor Pullers Association (FVATP) began in early 1980, when a group of Fraser Valley farmers discussed how well their old tractors could pull farm equipment.

As tends to happen with farmers, there was a lot of discussion and not much agreement so they decided created FVATP to settle the disputes. It was a challenge – added weight on the sled moves to increase the load on the drawbar with the objective of making it harder and harder to get to the end of the course. Spectators will be able to see these pullers in action from noon until 3pm on Saturday and Sunday, along with 30 regular tractors, 30 garden tractors and their competing owners. The Rotary Club of Aldergrove has sponsored the annual event.

“We just kept adding kids and tractors,” Kleiberg added.

The Kleiberg family clan will battle it out on their tractors for trophies this year, as they have done so in the past.
