The North Okanagan Shuswap has a long history of supporting our military and the personnel who serve to protect our values and freedoms. I would like to thank the volunteers, sponsors and all those who support the Okanagan Military Tattoo Society in paying tribute to our military past and present.
The 6th Annual Okanagan Military Tattoo is a celebration of traditions with entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. It gives me great pleasure to be able to welcome you all on behalf of myself and the constituents of Vernon Monashee to our beautiful city. The 6th annual festivities promises to be an even more exciting event than last year with hundreds of dancers, drummers, pipers, and singers of all ages and heritages. I want to thank all the volunteers involved in putting this truly remarkable event together. Without their tireless commitment this event would not be possible, thank you.

Passing the Torch! I am not sure that when our small group got together to talk about the possibility of a Military Tattoo in Vernon that we could have predicted the support and excitement that has brought us now to our sixth year! We have so much to NORM CRERAR remember and so much to look forward to. This is the 75th anniversary of the Normandy Landings that really was the beginning of the end of WW ll. To mark the 75th anniversary of D Day and the Battle of Normandy, Veterans Affairs Canada has partnered with VIA Rail, Parks Canada, the Canadian Armed Forces and community organizations to hold events in communities across Canada. The journey of remembrance began in March, when a pair of combat boots—representing the Canadians who traded in their civilian shoes for combat boots to serve in the Second World War— was placed on a VIA Rail train in Vancouver, bound for the east coast. The boots have made their journey across Canada but are coming back and
will be a part of our very important, Tribute to the Veterans. We believe we have an extraordinary show this year with a large number of youth. We have been in touch with the Brentwood Imperial Youth Band from the UK for almost two years and very much look forward to their presence. We are very pleased to welcome back the Calgary Round-Up Band and we also have support from the cadets of the Vernon Army Cadet Training Center. Our dancers will number 32 this year and in their Okanagan Military Tattoo debut, the Okanagan Rhythmic Gymnastics Club will show us their stuff.

Music! Performance! Friendship! The 160 member Calgary Round-Up Band is one of Canada’s oldest and finest junior highschool marching band and performing arts ensembles. Founded in 1956 by the Calgary Police Service, the Calgary Round-Up Band has provided Calgary area youth with training in both music and dance accompanied by a strong sense of self-discipline for over 60 years. The Band travels nationally or internationally each summer to promote its program and the City of Calgary. Additionally, the group performs annually in numerous events such as the Calgary Stampede Parade, Banff Canada Day Parade and Music ‘N Motion, a spring exhibition held annually in Calgary. As a marching ensemble, the Round-Up Band combines music with movement to produce an unforgettable experience for members and audience alike. This program provides opportunities to develop musical skills in a unique, fun and exciting performance-based atmosphere. The field show is the primary focus of rehearsals throughout the year. For the Okanagan Military Tattoo, the usual field show has been modified somewhat to take place in the indoor confines of Kal Tire Place. The show is the telling of a story conveyed by instrumentalists and dancers through the use of drill formations, music and visual pageantry. Every year a new field show is performed, providing the students with an unforgettable experience that is uniquely personal.

Scottish Veteran Leads Massed Pipes & Drums Drum Major Bill O’Donnell, a veteran of the 1st Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Scotland will lead the massed pipes and drums in this year’s Okanagan Military Tattoo. Mr. O’Donnell was also very much involved with the Black Watch Army Cadet Force in Fife, Scotland. He has completed many military training courses including the Adult Instructors Course at Frimley Park in England and in Aberdeen Scotland. He has a wealth of experience in Drill Training with both adults and juveniles. Since moving to Canada, he has completed the Canadian Armed Forces / RCMP Drum Major Course in Ottawa in 2017.
The term “Tattoo” evolved from a European tradition dating back to the 17th century when the Low Country innkeepers would cry “doe den tap toe” Turn off the taps! as the fifes and drums of the local regiment signalled a return to quarters. Today, the word Tattoo refers to a ceremonial performance of military music by massed bands. Each Tattoo is influenced by the culture and traditions of the country they represent. Fans of the massed spectacles of music might flock to the world’s great Tattoos: The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland, the Basil Tattoo in Switzerland and the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo in Halifax. But the greatest Military Tattoo in Western Canada is the Okanagan Military Tattoo.

Okanagan Military Tattoo TICKETS AT 250-549-7469 The British Columbia Regiment (DUKE OF CONNAUGHT’S OWN) The Regimental Band of the British Columbia Regiment (Duke of Connaught’s Own) under the leadership of Bombardier Brian Smith will make its inaugural appearance at this year’s Okanagan Military Tattoo. The Band is comprised of civilian volunteers who perform for military and public functions as representatives of the Regiment.
After a 20 year hiatus, following the disbanding of the regimental band in the mid 1960’s, the Band reformed in 1987 as an all volunteer band. It rehearses weekly at the historic Beatty Street Drill Hall, home of the Regiment. In the past 12 months, the Band has performed more than 30 engagements, frequently with between 30 and 40 members. This summer the Band will perform live for over 100,000 people at their various shows. The Band will participate in the annual “Tribute to the Veterans” segment of the program that is commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Normandy in which the British Columbia Regiment was actively involved.

The Okanagan Military Tattoo Musical Extravaganza will be a success because of help from you and the dozens of other volunteers who will make this exciting event come together. If you want to make a difference in the community by helping to bridge generations and cultures as well as celebrating our musical traditions, we’d like to hear from you.
Hose is vital in firefighting. In most cases, it’s the only way to get the “wet stuff on the hot stuff”. The early engine companies were equipped with hand-drawn reels and responded to alarms at the same time as the engine. At this time, all apparatus was hand hauled and the hose was too cumbersome and too heavy to be carried. Large wheels helped cope with unpaved and rutted roads.
Changes in apparatus meant an end to front line use by the 1880s and hand-hauled hose reels were relegated to volunteer companies or retained for use in competitions.

TATTOO EXPO 2019 Last year over 20 community organizations and vendors set up some unique and interesting displays on the concourse level at Kal Tire Place. These were not the typical exhibits that one sees elsewhere. They encompassed a huge variety of subjects, from Scottish dance groups, musical instruments from the British Isles, historical objects, highland regalia, to information about local cadet corps. We call it the Tattoo Expo and it is free to the public. With so much to see and ask about, many Tattoo attendees found themselves pressed for time to visit all the exhibits. They asked us if we could extend the viewing hours and we agreed. This year, the Tattoo Expo will open two full hours before the performances begin. We are also moving the Expo to Kal Tire North to accommodate an extra 20 exhibitors. This will also free up space for mobility challenged folks on the Concourse level of Kal Tire Place.

The extended hours and the new location for the Tattoo Expo will give our audience plenty of time to discover and explore all of the exhibits. Just as the Tattoo’s list of performers changes each year, the Tattoo Expo has some new additions this year as well. This summer over 1700 cadets and 200 staff will train in Vernon making it the third largest Cadet Training Centre in Canada. Training encompasses Leadership, Marksmanship, Music, Physical Fitness, Ceremonial Drill, Citizenship and Expedition activities and ranges from two to seven weeks in duration.

This year, the core of the Okanagan Military Tattoo’s massed pipe band will include members of the Kamloops Pipe Band Society, the Kelowna Pipe Band Society, the Shuswap Pipes ‘n Drums and the Kalamalka Highlanders.

While registrations are still coming in, the Tattoo Organizing Committee is hoping to have as many as to 100 pipers and drummers on the floor of Kal Tire Place at one time.

Germany invaded much of Western Europe in the spring of 1940, during the opening months of the Second World War. A narrow stretch of sea, the English Channel was all that separated the surging enemy forces from Great Britain, but the island nation held firm. The conquered countries on the continent would suffer greatly under a harsh occupation in the years that followed. An Allied raid on the French coast at Dieppe in August 1942 would result in heavy losses, especially for Canadian troops, but the Allies would slowly turn the tide against the enemy war machine in North Africa, Italy, on the Eastern Front, in the skies over Europe and on the Atlantic Ocean. To win the war, however, Germany would have to be defeated on the ground in Western Europe. The target for the Allied landing forces would be the beaches of Normandy. Land, sea and air forces trained extensively and the necessary troops, ships, tanks, supplies and other equipment were steadily amassed. Misinformation was leaked to the Germans to confuse them over where the landings would actually take place. Huge portable docking facilities were prepared so Allied transport ships could unload their cargos in France and long flexible pipes were designed to carry fuel under the English Channel.
FORTRESS EUROPE The Germans had turned the coast of Europe from the Spanish border to Scandinavia into a daunting series of defensive positions. Its shores were studded with land mines, barbed wire, concrete bunkers, artillery batteries, machine gun nests, anti-tank walls and thousands of watchful enemy troops. An Allied defeat on the beaches of Normandy would have been a disaster and there was no way to safely evacuate troops in large numbers

Allied war planes undertook countless missions attacking coastal defenses and lines of transportation leading up to the invasion. On June 6, 1944 – a date that has become known in history as “D-Day” a massive Allied force would cross the English Channel for the 80 kilometre landing zones. Over 7,000 naval vessels of all types including 284 major combat ships, took part in the sea-borne assault phase of the offensive. Royal Canadian Air Force planes were among the 4,000 bombers and 3,700 fighter planes that relentlessly struck the shore defences and inland targets.

More than 14,000 Canadian troops – from coast to coast – came ashore at Juno Beach where they braved heavy fire and captured their shoreline positions before penetrating the farthest inland of any of the 155,000 Allied troops who landed on June 6, 1944.

A HARD WON VICTORY D-Day was on the beginning of the struggle to liberate France. Canadians repeatedly found themselves pitted against elite German Panzer divisions under the command of ruthless and experienced Officers. The first month of fighting was an exercise in endurance for the Canadians as the combat intensified. The Canadian navy and air force continued to support the campaign by keeping the sea lanes clear of enemy shipping and sweeping German warplanes from the skies over Normandy. Caen fell to the British and Canadians on July 9, but fighting continued until mid August when the German defences in France finally began to collapse. Canadian troops helped close the the socalled Falaise Gap which trapped tens of thousands of retreating enemy soldiers. By August 21, the Battle of Normandy was over and on August 25 Paris was liberated.
SACRIFICE Victory in the Battle of Normandy came at a terrible cost. Some 359 Canadian soldiers were killed on D-Day alone and more than 5,000 would die during the two and a half months of fighting in Normandy. Over 13,000 more of our soldiers were wounded, with many suffering injuries to body and mind that they would carry for the rest of their lives. Canada’s impressive efforts in the Second World War remain a point of great national pride many decades later. The brave Canadians who came ashore on D-Day and saw action in the Battle of Normandy were among more than one million men and women from our country who served the cause of peace and freedom during the conflict. Sadly, over 45,000 of them would lose their lives.

Originally founded in 1990 as a marching bugle corps of drums, the Band has since evolved into the multi functional and fully chromatic band that it is today. The Band’s versatility sees it performing both as a marching band and a concert band at domestic and international events throughout the calendar year. Based in Warley (Essex) on the former site of the historic Britisch Army barracks. The Band’s facilities include several classrooms, a music library, a drill hall and a conceret hall. Association. As honourary members of the association, the Band proudly wears the Polar Bear insignia on their uniforms. The Band has performed throughout the United Kingdom at Remembrance Day ceremonies, Royal Anniversaries and varius commemorative events. They have performed at Disneyland and the Rose Bowl Parade, the Moscow Tattoo and have recently completed a tour of Germany. This year’s appearance at the Okanagan Military Tattoo is their first Canadian appearance. And what do 65 young Britons look forward seeing in Canada? It’s unanimous! They want to see a Mountie, A Bear and have a Swim in a Lake. We look forward to helping them achieve their wishes.

The Team are considered part of the RCEME’s Heritage Team: a greater collective that takes care of artifacts and works to represent their history, old trades and skills.

The 1960’s Jeep is ever so slightly modified to allow for the drastic exercise – for example, its electrical system is minimized, with only one plug providing all of its electricity.
