Father says province not taking son’s autism seriously

A

central Alberta father is questioning why his autistic son was first approved for a provincial program — and then his case was put up for review only

days later.

Tim Moir is wondering if a critical letter he wrote about the Community and Social Services department is behind the about-face.

“The dates coincide,” said Moir, whose five-yearold barely speaks, but is supposed to enter kindergarten this fall.

The local man wants to access crucial therapies for his son. But although the family was told that their boy was approved for the Family Supports for Children with Disabilities Program in a letter sent June 21, just six days later, the family was hearing otherwise.

FSCD is not able to commit to or confirm a start date … All assessed services are being channelled and reviewed at a higher level at this time, with unknown timelines on approvals,” states an email Moir received on June 27 from a case worker.

Moir is concerned because he’d sent an email critical of the department to Red Deer South MLA Jason Stephan, and this was forwarded to Alberta Community and Social Services.

“I was concerned about how the department was run,” he said.

And just after he heard his email was forwarded, he received notice of the review from the case worker.

Moir is particularly concerned because there’s no timeline established for the delay, and he wants his son to gain timely access to needed therapies.

When asked to explain why the autistic boy’s approval was put up for review, Natasha Kornak, press secretary for the Community and Social Services minister, responded: “The ministry is closely monitoring and managing service requests based on current policies and is prioritizing services for Albertans with the most critical and urgent needs.”

She added her department is looking into this case and will reach out to the client. According to Kornak, no recent changes were made to any disability-related programs, including the Family Supports for Children with Disabilities program.

Moir said he wants to hear that his son’s diagnosis of autism is being taken seriously by the government.

“Right now, it doesn’t feel like it, with all of this back and forth.”

R

etiring Red Deer College president Joel Ward has left his mark on central Alberta by helping start the school on the road to becoming a university.

But Red Deer also left an indelible impression on him: “My whole life has changed in the 10 years I’ve lived here,” said Ward.

He’s entering retirement next month with the satisfaction of having met some important professional and personal goals.

Regarding his RDC achievements, Ward stressed

it actually took the whole community pulling together to obtain university status for the college from Alberta’s one-term New Democrat government.

“We had been working on it for 35 years, but we had one government that whole time — the PCs — and they always said, ‘No.’” Alberta’s large universities had also been exerting pressure against RDC’s degree-granting request, he added.

Clearly, a new approach was needed, so “instead of this being RDC’s ask, we made it the community’s ask.”

Businesses, parents, educators and civic leaders banded together to make an economic and social case for the importance of having a new Red Deer University.

“We had a compelling new narrative to tell and it resonated with the NDP…” Ward said they proved central Alberta was losing young people to the big cities, as many did not return to work in the Red Deer region after getting degrees in Calgary or Edmonton.

He predicts the college’s gain in local degree-granting programs will have a “tremendous” impact on the entire region, economically, culturally and societally.

RDC has been changing internally to align its faculty and administrative structures with those of universities. Some jobs and programs were dropped and others added.

Ward admitted this hasn’t been a pain-free process — and changes are continuing as RDC prepares for a possibly leaner advanced education budget in the fall.

But he preferred making these cuts under his watch, rather than leaving them to his successor, who will be less familiar with the facility.

Ward is pleased with the college’s infrastructure gains, including the Four Centres buildings, the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, as well as an alternative energies lab and a solar-powered residence.

On the personal front, he’s also seen great changes.

No longer married, Ward now has a new partner, who will soon be moving with him to Victoria. He’s also discovered he’s part of a large family, having tracked through genealogy research and some genetic testing the five half-sisters he has through his father’s side.

Born in Thunder Bay, Ont., to a single mother, Ward didn’t know his father — and his father, apparently, hadn’t known about him, either.

His dad, a Second World War veteran and electrician, was deceased by the time Ward discovered his identity.

But Ward has since gotten to know the younger sisters that he never knew he had — including actress Rena Polly (Dead Ringers, Designated Survivor), wife of Blue Rodeo’s Jim Cuddy.

In reflecting on his time in Red Deer, Ward said, “I did some of my best work here … discovered my father and five new sisters … I couldn’t be in a better place in my life.”

But he still plans to leave because he can’t take any more snow.

“If it snows in Victoria. I’ll be on a plane heading south …”

We’re becoming a university because of you

T

his is my final column as president of RDC, as I am retiring.

Our new president, Peter Nunoda, starts his tenure in September. Please welcome him and his family as you did me 10 years ago.

As I reflect on my decade as president, it is clear that the future for RDC as a University is unlimited, and it is because of all of you.

Joel Because of you, the government of Ward Alberta finally said “yes” to RDC becoming a university. It is perhaps the most significant decision ever made to ensure our region will grow and prosper.

Because of you, our campuses have grown. The Donald School of Business and the Welikoklad Event Centre ensure downtown will be vibrant.

The Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre is an iconic landmark defining our community to all who pass on the QE2.

Our new residence, clad in solar panels, and our alternative energy lab are examples of RDC/U’s leadership in becoming carbon neutral and energy independent.

Because of you, 16 new programs have been launched, which ensures more learners can remain in central Alberta to complete their education.

Our 10-year academic plan, led by Paulette Hanna, ensures we will launch even more programs, including new degrees, as we complete our university transition.

I have always been reluctant to share my story, but it demonstrates the power of post-secondary education, and its ability to change lives.

I got kicked out of high school at 16 for reasons I won’t go into (let’s just say I didn’t like school, and school didn’t like me.)

So, 16 years of age, out of school, with no prospects and no real family, I ran away from home.

With all my worldly possessions in a shopping bag, $10 in my pocket, hair down to my butt with an attitude to match, I hitchhiked west.

I stayed in hostels, hustled pool, made money where I could - and saw people at their worst, including myself. Lots happened in those years, but that really isn’t the point of the story.

Fast forward eight years and, with the help of a few people who had faith in me, just as there are many of you who helped others along the way, I went to university.

I was put on probation and I needed to prove I could handle the work for one semester and, if I was successful, I would be allowed to continue. Well, I graduated and the doors of possibility flew open.

It is at college that I learned the transformative power of education to change lives. I was given a second chance, and for that I am grateful. The experience taught me to never give up, keep learning,

Monkeys’ shelter kitten at Discovery Wildlife Park

M

onkeys apparently opened their hearts and their enclosure to a tiny, lost kitten this week at Discovery Wildlife Park.

The owner of the Innisfail attraction, Doug Bos, said the kitten should not have survived its visit with the four Japanese snow macaques.

“Monkeys are not nice animals. If gophers or mice get in there, they kill them. They didn’t do that,” Bos said.

“Somehow, the monkeys nurtured it and took it in.”

He said staff found the kitten in the enclosure on Thursday morning while doing routine cleaning and feeding. The enclosure has a rubber flap door, so the kitten would not have been able to open it.

“It’s pretty sturdy because monkeys are pretty abusive to stuff. It takes a little bit of effort to open and close it.”

He said Japanese snow macaques,

which came from a zoo that closed down about 15 years ago, are probably one of the meaner monkeys. They are aggressive to their own kind, and are carnivorous.

“If I would have guessed the outcome of this, I would have guessed that the monkeys would have killed the kitten, but it was the exact opposite.”

He said the scrawny, starving kitten, which could fit in the palm of your hand, also had to squeeze through the chain link fence made up of five-centimetre squares.

“I think maybe the monkeys pulled it through the chain link. It’s not easy for the kitten to get through there.

“The whole thing was surprising.”

Bos said it was cold and rainy on Wednesday night when the kitten likely made its way into the monkey cage.

Someone could have dropped it off at or near the wildlife park, thinking it would be found by staff. It was not a feral kitten, because it was used to being handled.

pened to the kitten at any of the animal enclosures, hopefully, no more domestic animals will be dumped off at the park, he said.

At times, wildlife have been left at the park’s gate. Last fall, a cougar cub, only a few weeks old, was left in a box. Despite efforts to save it, that cub died.

Bos said the situation with the kitten and monkeys was shocking.

“In all our years of doing this, we’ve had lots of stuff dropped on our doorstep. But this is the first time something like this has happened and ended up in an animal enclosure.”

The kitten was adopted by a staff member and was doing well.

Red Deer woman $2M richer

drienne Cornish got a message she wasn’t expecting when she scanned her Western 649 ticket.

She discovered she had won $2 million on the May 11 draw.

Cornish purchased her $4 Western 649 quick pick ticket at Apple Drugs, located at 3831 40 Ave. in Red Deer.

She returned to the store to check her ticket a little over a month later.

“I scanned the ticket on the self-checker and thought there was something wrong with the machine,” she said.

“I’ve gotten so used to seeing the message, ‘Sorry, does not appear to be a winner’ when checking my lottery tickets.”

“When ‘Appears to be a $2 million winner’ popped up on the screen, I was completely speechless.”

Portal to mysterious past in high demand

T

he cast-wax head made with human teeth and hair looks so lifelike, it might almost breathe.

Steampunk-ish Victorian automatons in another display case exhibit the allure of a distant era — as does a ghostly hollow-eyed Halloween mask that predates store-bought costumes and treats.

Like all the artifacts showing at the Museum of Fear and Wonder in Bergen, these objects provoke strong emotional reactions from viewers.

They possess the unsettling power to transport our imaginations to a murky, mysterious past, when the world was much different than it is today.

Sculptural artist Jude Griebel opened the remote rural museum, south of Sundre, with his brother Brendan Griebel, an Arctic anthropologist, in the fall of 2017.

The siblings had acquired about 3,000 unusual artifacts over the past 20 years as study items for their respective careers.

In this digital age, when material things seem to no longer hold the same cache, the Griebels felt it timely to share these lovingly preserved treasures with a wider audience in a part of Alberta that they love.

The scientific cross-sections, mannequins and dolls were largely purchased from small, rural museums that were closing. The artifacts — including a Victorian rocking horse made from a still-born colt — are kept in climate-controlled storage be-

Older brother Jude Griebel, an internationally known mixed-media artist, who often explores the

melding of human form and landscape, said he not only used the limb, torsos and heads as study materials, but was fascinated by their craftsmanship.

Particularly life-like are the fragile and rare waxen heads.

They were obtained from the now-defunct Criminal Wax Museum in Niagara Falls, the Charles Dickens Museum, formerly in Holland, and the religious Christus Gardens Museum in Tennessee, and others.

Griebel said some glass-eyed wax sculptures were created from plaster casts taken from real people’s faces. Each hair was inserted into the wax scalps by hand — a process that took up to three months.

“We have some with real human teeth” — from a Victorian-era museum that was shut down in England.

Other artifacts have a more slap-dash, folk-art quality, including a small clay head with haunted-looking eyes.

One of the larger objects is a hand-made leather and cloth doll that’s child sized and weighted like a youngster.

It was purchased from a Texas antique dealer who was only too happy to pass it on to the museum.

He was unnerved by the doll, thinking it was moving on its own.

Griebel admits that viewers tend to project their own fears on particular artifacts.

While many come with unusual background stories, “this is not a paranormal museum,” he stressed.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7 According to the www.fearandwonder.ca website, the facility the Griebels created in an old Second World War army barracks highlights “the psychological and narrative qualities of objects… The collection is comprised of emotionally complicated artifacts that speak directly to themes of human experience, identity and myth-making.”

Griebel feels these material things are little understood and need an explanation in our present throw-away society.

Visitors, therefore, can’t just show up at the museum, which offers admission by donation. They must prebook an hour-long guided tour that tells the collection’s greater story.

Griebel hopes visitors will find it “both educating and mystifying.”

Word-of-mouth seems to be bearing this out, as the museum’s 2019 season is already sold out — except for an opportunity to take one of two group bus tours leaving July 13 and 24 from the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery.

(The $100 ticket includes the bus ride, lunch and a stop at the new Olds sculpture park. Please contact the museum for more information.)

Bookings for the Museum of Fear and Wonder’s 2020 season will be taken through its website starting next March 15.

Meanwhile, Jude Griebel’s art will be featured in a joint exhibit at the Red Deer museum starting July 5.

Central Albertans are getting ready to party July 1 HAPPY CANADA DAY

or 50 years, the Red Deer Cultural Heritage Society has made sure Red Deerians can gather together to celebrate Canada Day. Society manager Delores Coghill said participation always depends on the weather and the day of the week that July 1 lands on, but organizers anticipate 10,000 to 20,000 visitors to stop by during Monday’s festivities at Bower Ponds.

“When it falls during the long weekend, it’s iffy, because a lot of people go away. With this being on Monday, the end of the long weekend, I think we’ll get people later, when they get back home from camping or whatever,” said Coghill about the celebration.

Ten international food booths will start selling their cuisine at 11 a.m. and cultural dancers hit the stage at noon.

“They’re not the commercial food trucks at all. They’re all non-profits.

This is how these groups make some money for the year. I really like to stress that.”

Daytime performances kick off with Irish dancers, followed by 15 more dance groups performing almost every half hour until about 6 p.m.

Opening ceremonies with local officials will be held at 2 p.m.

Evening performances start at 6 p.m. with Norman Foote, followed

by Bard on Bower at 7:15, Big Voice Drummers at 8 p.m., Ten02 at 8:30, and XBand at 9:45.

Parents can pre-register their children for a free songwriting session with Foote, then watch them perform

Sylvan Lake will offer a host of activities on Canada Day, including the Sylvan Lake Sailing Club Canada Day Charity Race, and a March of Canadians, led by a pipe band with everyone welcome to join in the procession.

Activities start at 10 a.m. and finish off with fireworks at the pier at about 11 p.m.

Ponoka will have a free barbecue, children’s activities and live entertainment at Lions Centennial Park from 2 to 6 p.m. and fireworks in the downtown at 11 p.m.

Lacombe festivities start with a free pancake breakfast at 8 a.m., followed by several events, including walking tours and a strawberry social at Michener House, wagon rides, barbecue and concert. Fireworks at Cranna Lake happen at dusk.

Family celebrations on July 1 at Rocky Mountain House will take place at Rocky Mountain House National Historic Site with helicopter rides, a car show and children’s entertainment. Fireworks are at 11:30 p.m.

Olds will host a Canada Day parade at 11 a.m., followed by family activities, toonie swim and 11 p.m. fireworks.

Innisfail will celebrate Canada Day weekend on Sunday at Centennial Park.

Highlights include a skydiving demonstration by Alberta Skydive Central (weather permitting) and a firework display at dusk.

ORONTO — A new poll suggests Canadians haven’t made much progress in expanding their knowledge of the more colourful parts of the country’s history.

The online survey from Historica Canada, the organization behind the country’s Heritage Minutes, quizzed respondents on 30 pieces of quirky Canadiana using true or false questions and tallied the number of correct responses.

The organization says 67 per cent of respondents who completed the survey got a failing grade.

That’s more than the 62 per cent of respondents who failed a similar survey last year, in which Historica quizzed them on trivia tidbits such as the fact that the Montreal Canadiens once lost the Stanley Cup by the side of the road while changing a tire.

This year, Historica says scores were particularly poor for questions related to science and innovation, with most test-takers failing to recognize that both the world’s first internet archive and the popular Jolly Jumper baby exercise toy were Canadian inventions.

Poll respondents were also fooled by false statements, largely believing claims that the Newfoundland dog became an official national symbol after a former prime minister received one as a gift when the province officially became part of Canada.

Historica Chief Executive Officer Anthony Wilson-Smith readily admits this year’s batch of questions were

“nasty,” noting the poll results should not be taken for a sign of overall ignorance about Canadian history.

But Wilson-Smith said the questions, if not the results, should serve to challenge what he views as a common myth about the study of Canada’s past.

“It drives me crazy, this idea that Canadian history is boring,” he said in a telephone interview. “No, it’s not.

People just haven’t bothered to look closely enough at the real human stories and quirky things that have happened here.”

The survey of 1,002 participants, administered by Ipsos, broke questions down into five categories to quiz respondents on their knowledge of science and innovation, geography, culture, sports and animals.

Survey participants demonstrated strongest knowledge of geographical questions, with 48 per cent scoring a passing grade in that category.

Passing likely involved correctly recognizing that more people live in Canada’s smallest province of Prince Edward Island than the largest territory of Nunavut, and that the city known today as Kitchener, Ont., was once named Berlin and opted to change its name during the First World War. Questions related to literature also drew a relatively high number of correct responses.

The survey found 47 per cent of respondents knew that “Anne of Green Gables” has been part of Japan’s public school curriculum since 1952.

Even more, 68 per cent, were aware that Winnie the Pooh was inspired

by a real bear named for the city of Winnipeg that travelled overseas with a Canadian soldier during the First World War. On the flip side, the vast majority of Canadians were under the mistaken impression that the country’s men’s soccer team has never qualified for the FIFA World Cup, with only 23 per cent of respondents recognizing that claim as false.

Only 19 per cent of those completing the survey knew that the first recorded instance of dressing in costume on Halloween in North America was documented in Vancouver in 1898.

Overall performance was weakest in the science and innovation category. Only 30 per cent of respondents, for instance, knew that the first internet search engine was developed by a graduate student at Montreal’s McGill University. The engine was dubbed “Archie,” or “archive” without the v.

Historica found regional discrepancies in participant’s quiz scores, with 37 per cent of respondents in Saskatchewan or Manitoba recording passing grades. That rate fell to 22 per cent for poll participants in British Columbia.

Pass rates did not vary by age, the survey found, but were eight per cent higher among men than women.

The online survey was conducted between June 11 and 14. The polling industry’s professional body, the Marketing Research and Intelligence Association, says online surveys cannot be assigned a margin of error as they are not a random sample and therefore are not necessarily representative of the whole population.

ALGARY — A lawyer for the Alberta government has argued that the province’s turn-off-the taps legislation is not meant to hurt British Columbia despite political rhetoric that suggests otherwise.

A Calgary judge is hearing B.C.’s request for an injunction against the law.

The province filed a statement of claim in Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench last month calling the law unconstitutional and has made a similar filing in Federal Court.

Evan Dixon, a lawyer for the Alberta government, says the legislation is neutral on its face and there have been no orders to restrict the flow of oil to B.C. He also argued B.C.’s attorney general does not have standing to fight the law in court because there are

Higher oil prices, more tax income: Alberta ends 2018-19 with smaller deficit EDMONTON — Newly released figures show the Alberta government ended the last fiscal year with a deficit more than $2 billion smaller than originally predicted in the budget.

Higher oil prices and more than $800 million in additional tax revenue are being credited for shrinking the red number.

The figures show resource revenue was up $1.6 billion from what was expected in the 2018-19 budget — the last brought in by Rachel Notley’s NDP before a provincial election loss earlier this year to Jason Kenney and the United Conservatives.

Expenses were up $150 million and, overall, the Alberta government ended up spending $6.7 billion more than it made.

The Opposition NDP, ousted from power in April’s provincial election, claimed victory for the smaller deficit.

“Our government was on a path to balance. These numbers show that path was intact,” former premier Rachel Notley said on Twitter.

Sarah Hoffman, the NDP’s deputy leader, added: “It shows our path to balance was working — faster than expected — despite the Kenney government’s accusations about the books being off.

“They weren’t, and the finance minister knows it, which is why they aren’t standing up and telling Albertans the whole story of the state of our financials.”

The Federal Court of Appeal quashed the approval months later on the grounds that there hadn’t been enough consultation with First Nations or consideration of the pipeline’s potential impact on marine wildlife.

The project was approved for a second time by the federal cabinet last week.

lease his government’s first budget until the fall to give a government-appointed panel time to examine Alberta’s finances.

The panel, headed by former Saskatchewan finance minister Janice MacKinnon, is to report by Aug. 15 on ways the province can save money.

When she was appointed, MacKinnon called Alberta a big-spending province, but said that hasn’t translated into better public services.

“Even if the budget was balanced, I would look at the spending … because a lot of money is being spent in a lot of areas and you are not getting the outcomes,” she said at the time. “You are not getting the results.”

The new government has already passed legislation that delays contract provisions that mandate binding arbitration for 180,000 public-sector workers. Under current collective bargaining agreements, those arbitration hearings must occur on or before the bill’s new deadline of Oct. 31.

The government said the delay is necessary to let MacKinnon’s panel do its work.

Trudeau leaves me feeling assaulted A

lthough I have conservative leanings, I do not endorse the extreme, far right views of our present conservative leaders.

And while a few liberal ideals are fair and equitable, some of the Chris expressed views of our Salomons federal Liberal leader in his extreme, far-left policies leave me feeling totally assaulted.

To be called a conservative anachronism that needs to be gotten rid of, especially by another political party of our country, almost leads me to think that our fragile democracy, which is already under attack, is soon coming to an end.

These are statements that we expect to hear in Russia and China, not in Canada.

More and more, we are hearing vitriolic attacks on opposition leaders as they malign each other just to get votes, copying what we see in the United States.

My view, as well as the view of many people I know and speak with, is that if you want that type of slandering and accusatory politicking, then go to the U.S. and fight with them. Leave it out of Canada.

We live under a government that says it stands on the principle of law, while watching our country being ousted from economic world trade, making me ask the question, “Does this principle that you stand on, in just this one case, fill your stomach?”

This same leader has more than once expressed his dislike for Alberta, if not the entire West.

At the same time, he and his Governor General have ridiculed me for my faith and refuse to appreciate my viewpoints.

I understand that in a country such as ours, that there has to be compromise from all sides, and that a certain amount of difference has to be accommodated, but to have this group say we have to be gotten rid of smacks of verbal abuse of the most heinous kind.

I wonder if this, then, could be called a form of political genocide?

Add to this the redefining of the English language for political gain, while excusing himself, only shows that he hates not only the West, but all Canadians.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau just doesn’t like who we are as a country. Then why does he act as our leader? This is no longer his drama class; this is real life in Canada.

A car in front of me had a bumper sticker that read, we should pray for our leader; in particular, Psalm 109,

Verse 8. Check it out and read what it says. You might get a chuckle.

It almost pains me to criticize the leader of my country in this way. But it pains me even more to hear that same leader malign at least 25 per cent of his people the way that he does, just for their ideological stand on life.

Would this happen to be his version of diversity? Should we not instead, be striving for greater unity, so that we can proceed as one people?

One of the great freedoms we have in Canada is the freedom to travel wherever we want, without persecution, especially within our own country.

So, when we do see all the different parts of this beautiful country, it is hard to imagine that there are some who persecute their own people to the point that those who feel slighted wish to become a separate entity, or even their own country.

We can all be thankful also for the freedom to vote, because that is the only way to remedy what we see as a cancer in our country. I just wish that we didn’t have to choose between three extremist parties, because none of them really serve this country to its best potential.

We need someone who does not leave us feeling so assaulted.

Disappointment can’t dampen affection for vintage motorcycle T

he last t i m e motorcycles were mentioned when we met here, it was a couple of weeks ago.

I’m happy to report the vintage saga continHarley Honda ues on apace, into Hay the dark, yet exciting, tunnel of uncharted waters and mixed metaphors.

To review: my friend Dave and I had, after much diligent searching, located and purchased a 1966 Honda 90 Trail motorbike on Kijiji.

However, upon closer inspection, involving reducing most of the bike to a pile of pathetic parts, it turned out the little red machine that we were so pumped about was actually a rusted heap of junk that had about as much chance of being a motorcycle again as a wheelbarrow.

And then, just as we were feeling sort of sorry for ourselves, sadly showing a picture of the dead red motorbike to the guys at our monthly coffee and pie meeting, one of our buddies happened to mention that he had not one, but two rare 1970s Honda CT90 motorbikes in his shed.

Incredibly, he also mentioned

that he was thinking of selling them “for cheap.”

Oh, and also, they didn’t run.

Of course, they didn’t run. And, of course, they were a pile of junk, I knew, but, you never know, right?

So to make a short story long, soon after coffee and pie, I adventured to Gary’s shed, and when he opened the door, I was gobsmacked.

Not because of the motorbikes – I couldn’t even see any motorbikes because of the wall of urban flotsam and jetsam that was literally stuffed in every centimetre of the big wooden shed.

Everything from snowblowers to several barbecues, a compressor or two (I think), to what looked like the entire tool and metal objects section of Value Village.

You see, Gary is a well-known “Saler” – as in the fact he haunts garage sales incessantly. Gary has gotten so good at garage saleing he has somehow mastered the space/time continuum, so that he is at every garage sale in the city simultaneously.

No matter where or when you happen upon a garage sale, big or small, Gary is there.

So after what seemed like three days of hauling stuff out of the shed, suddenly, there they were.

Way back in the corner, under a couple of broken lawn chairs and a kitchen sink, sat two Honda

motorbikes, minding their own business and maybe, just maybe, waiting to get roaring again.

We had to move a rather humongous old Honda Gold Wing highway motorcycle, which Gary also had under a defective leafblower and four cardboard boxes of God knows what, but when I could get a good look at the bikes, I almost wet my pants a little bit.

The green/orange one was actually painted with the world’s ugliest “camouflage” design, and Gary explained the entire bike had been “submerged” for some time in the big Red Deer flood of a couple of years ago.

At least that’s what the owner told him at the garage sale where he bought the bike.

But, holy moly, it was the yellow one that caused some heart arrhythmia for a moment or two.

I kid you not: it looked (almost) brand new.

It had unbroken signal lights, a perfect vinyl seat, excellent tires and a clean engine that didn’t look like it hadn’t run since Diefenbaker was PM. I was hooked. “And where did you get the yellow one?” I said breathlessly.

“Guess,” Gary said, but I barely heard him. I was wondering how much cash I could get off my Visa overdraft …

Ottawa’s carbon-pricing law constitutional, Ontario’s top court rules TORONTO — The federal government’s carbon pricing scheme is constitutionally sound and has the critical purpose of fighting climate change, Ontario’s top court ruled in a split decision on Friday.

The Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act, enacted in April, is within Parliament’s jurisdiction to legislate in relation to matters of “national concern,” Chief Justice George Strathy wrote on behalf of the court.

“Parliament has determined that atmospheric accumulation of greenhouse gases causes climate changes that pose an existential threat to human civilization and the global ecosystem,” Strathy said.

“The need for a collective approach to a matter of national concern, and the risk of non-participation by one or more provinces, permits Canada to adopt minimum national standards to reduce (greenhouse gas) emissions.”

Ontario’s Progressive Conservative government under Premier Doug Ford, who calls the carbon charge an illegal tax, had argued the act is a violation of the Constitution because it allows the

federal government to intrude on provincial jurisdiction.

During four days of submissions in April, Ontario insisted the act would undermine co-operative federalism. Provincial lawyers argued the federal government would end up with the power to regulate almost every facet of life — such as when you can drive, where you can live, or whether you can have a wood-burning fireplace.

For their part, federal lawyers argued the province was fearmongering. The act, they said, was a legitimate response to potentially catastrophic climate change by creating an incentive for people to change their behaviour.

TTAWA — Canada’s top court has issued a stern warning about allowing evidence of past sexual history in sex-assault trials, telling judges to be strict with jurors on how such details can be used.

The warning from the Supreme Court of Canada on Friday arose out of an Alberta case where a jury heard about a “friends-with-benefits” relationship between an accused and an alleged sexual-assault victim, meaning they were friends who, from time to time, got together to have sex.

A complainant’s sexual history can’t ordinarily be raised as evidence unless it’s directly relevant to the charge.

The trial judge allowed the information over concerns that jurors would have thought the relationship was platonic, calling the evidence “relatively benign.”

The majority of the Alberta Court of Appeal disagreed and ordered a new trial for Patrick John Goldfinch — a ruling the Supreme Court upheld Friday.

Canada.

The central bank said Friday that its summer business outlook survey, which measures corporate expectations, bounced back after falling into negative territory at the start the year.

“The business outlook survey indicator edged up to its historical average consistent with a slight improvement in business sentiment,” the Bank of Canada said in its latest quarterly survey of senior management at roughly 100 firms.

The improved outlook for the economy came as Statistics Canada reported real gross domestic product grew 0.3 per cent in April to kick off the second quarter.

The result was down from a showing of 0.5 per cent in March, but more than the 0.1 per cent economists had expected, according to Thomson Reuters Eikon.

The business outlook survey, which was done in May and early June, found that following some softness in past sales, businesses expected an increase in sales growth over the coming year backed by domestic and foreign demand.

“Sales optimism is concentrated in Central Canada and includes positive expectations for housing activity.

“Nevertheless firms anticipate weakness in sales tied to the Western Canadian oil industry to persist,” the report said.

year as oil prices fell and the country posted its weakest back-to-back quarters of growth since 2015.

The central bank’s spring business outlook survey indicator dropped into negative territory in the wake of that weakness, however recent data has shown an improving economy.

Robert Kavcic, a senior economist at BMO Capital Markets, said the survey was probably a little bit stronger than most were expecting, and consistent with the GDP data in suggesting that the weakness in the Canadian economy was temporary.

“For the Bank of Canada, this is one more reason to sit back and just listen while other central banks sing more dovish tunes,” Kavcic wrote in a report.

“Had this survey deteriorated further, that might have been harder to do, but that wasn’t the case.”

The Bank of Canada has kept its key interest rate target on hold in recent months, predicting that the weakness in the economy to start the year was temporary and that growth would pick up this year.

The Canadian central bank’s position stands in contrast to that of the U.S. Federal Reserve which has suggested it is prepared to cut interest rates later this year.

In its reading of the Canadian economy, Statistics Canada said the mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction sector gained 4.5 per cent, boosted by gains in the energy sector as output increased following government-mandated production cuts in Alberta that started in January.

Oilsands extraction increased 11.0 per cent as production restrictions were eased, while oil and gas extraction, excluding oilsands, was up 0.5 per cent.

However, the manufacturing sector pulled back 0.8 per cent in April, the largest monthly contraction since August 2017.

TORONTO — The announcement Friday that George Cope will retire in January after nearly 12 years as chief executive of BCE Inc. has focused fresh attention on the sprawling telecom and media giant as the industry undergoes fundamental changes.

The Montreal-based company, which owns Bell Canada, CTV Inc., and a portion of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Ltd., said chief operating officer Mirko Bibic will take over from Cope on Jan. 5, 2020.

The COO position had been vacant since Cope held it prior to replacing Michael Sabia as CEO in 2008.

“Even though we knew the retirement was coming when Mr. Bibic was promoted to the COO role in October 2018, it does feel a little earlier than GEORGE COPE expected,” Scotiabank telecom analyst Jeff Fan wrote in a note to clients.

“The market will likely speculate on Mr. Cope’s rationale. Our understanding is this was not health related and Mr. Cope believes this is the right time,” Fan wrote.

“We cannot help but wonder whether his decision was also driven by the state of the industry that is arguably at an important transition point, something we have been highlighting in our research over the past year.”

Among other things, through flagship subsidiary Bell Canada and regional affiliates including Bell Aliant and MTS Bell, BCE has been spending billions on fifth-generation wireless networks and fibre optics wireline networks In addition, Bell Media — owner of Canada’s largest collection of radio stations as well as its CTV television network and numerous specialty cable channels — faces new technologies, more competition and possible regulatory changes.

Cope, 57, joined Bell in January 2006 as COO after heading the Telus wireless business. Under his leadership, Bell grew its wireless business and executed strategic investments and acquisitions valued at more than $15 billion.

He said in a statement that the time is right for Bibic, 51, to take the company to “the next level.”

As chief operating officer, Bibic has been responsible since October for Bell Mobility, Bell Business Markets, and Bell Residential and Small Business.

As Bell’s chief legal and regulatory officer, Bibic also played a key role in BCE’s acquisitions of Astral Media and Manitoba Telecom Services Inc. — two of the company’s biggest strategic deals under Cope’s leadership.

BCE chairman Gordon Nixon said in a statement that Cope has re-energized Bell as an “agile” competitor.

“He has led the restructuring initiatives and made the critical investments in Bell’s team, networks and customer service infrastructure required to build a bold competitor across every segment of communications.”

Tim Casey, a telecom analyst with BMO Capital Markets, agreed in a research note that Cope “has been an extremely successful CEO by any measure, particularly in creating shareholder value.”

Free Canada Day buffet for citizens raises discrimination issues

ORONTO — Canadian citizens are invited to eat for free at an Ontario-based Chinese-Canadian restaurant chain this Canada Day, but legal experts say the offer may come with a side of discrimination.

Brampton, Ont.-based Mandarin Restaurant is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a free meal for patrons who can prove their Canadian citizenship.

“It seems a case of putting dim sum before dignity,” said Ted Flett, an employment and human rights lawyer with Toronto-based Zubas + Associates.

“And, I think the Mandarin is opening themselves up to quite a bit of liability with this sort of a move.”

Diners with a Canadian passport, birth certificate or citizenship card will receive their buffet meal free of charge on a first-come, first-serve basis on July 1 between 12 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., the Mandarin Restaurant Franchise Corp. announced earlier this week. The company operates 29 restaurants in Ontario.

This is the fifth year Mandarin has offered the free buffet linked to citizenship, wrote James Chiu, president and co-founder, in an email. Previously, diners redeemed the freebie in 1996, 2004, 2009 and 2014.

Chiu did not directly address a question about whether the company has any concerns that the promotion may discriminate against people who are not Canadian citizens, but sent a statement and details on the offer in response.

“This event is one of the ways for us to show our appreciation for Canada,” he said. “Canada welcomed us into the country 40 years ago and has supported us ever since.”

Flett said he’s surprised this promotion has been offered four previous times as it sounds like a benefit to an exclusive group of customers, which appears to violate section one of the Ontario Human Rights Code.

That section protects people from discrimination based on ethnic origin, citizenship and other factors in receiving services.

Flett is not convinced someone would have to be denied the freebie in order to pursue the matter as just communicating such a promotion may be discriminatory.

The province’s human rights code protects people from discrimination due to citizenship in five social areas, including housing, employment and services, such as at restaurants. That comes with some exceptions under the law.

For example, only Canadian citizens can vote in municipal or provincial elections, wrote Yves Massicotte, a spokesman for the Ontario Human Rights Commission.

“Defences under the Code are interpreted narrowly,” he wrote. “In

these circumstances, the restaurant would have to establish that its promotion is a cultural activity designed to foster and develop participation in that activity by Canadian citizens only.”

People who feel they are being discriminated against due to their citizenship can make a claim with the Human Right Tribunal of Ontario or contact the Human Rights Legal Support Centre, he said.

Flett said it’s possible that Mandarin has never had a claim made against it regarding this particular promotion and is unaware it could be discriminatory.

It’s also possible, he said, that because the restaurant is still providing service to people who are not Canadian citizens, but requiring they pay that day, it believes the practice is not discriminatory.

OPENHAGEN — The owners of toy maker Lego are teaming up with a group of investors to buy Merlin Entertainment, a British company that operates theme parks like Legoland and the Madame Tussauds wax museums.

Kirkbi Invest said Friday it is joining forces with private equity firm Blackstone and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board to offer 455 pence (60 cents) per share for Merlin, valuing it at 4.77 billion pounds ($6

billion).

Merlin runs eight Legoland parks and 20 Legoland Discovery Centers, as well as other sites like Madame Tussauds museums across the world.

It estimates that about 67 million people visit its sites every year.

Merlin said it accepted the deal and its share price jumped 14%.

The investors will create a company that will own 50% of Merlin. Kirkbi already owns a stake of nearly 30%.

The first Legoland opened in 1968 near the Lego company headquarters in western Denmark. Lego sold the Legoland parks to Merlin in 2005.

O

nly a few years ago, central Alberta wasn’t even involved in an event like this.

Its started to arrive on the provincial stage in a big way, and its showcasing the top U16 and U18 talent the area has to offer this weekend at Titans Park.

At the Alberta Regional rugby Championship, while Calgary and Edmonton may still hold much of the advantage, growth and interest in the sport is pushing some of the local talent into the national and international lens.

At the U18 girls level, the Central Alberta Predators have eight players who will play collegiate rugby somewhere next season and last year, they had close to 20 players on the provincial Wolfpack team.

“Our U18 girls have had a lot of success in the last couple of years that has been building momentum over four or five years in the program. We saw a provincial win at the club level, then we did win this tournament last year. Pushing to that new level, we’re seeing great talent coming from other teams, too,” said Kenton Poelzer, the Central Alberta Predators co-ordinator.

“The U18 (girls) program in Alberta is really strong now. My hope (for central Alberta) is they play their hearts out and they show their ability.”

The tournament this weekend at Titans Park is a double-barrelled showcase. It allows colleges and universities to recruit the best players in the province at the U18 level. It also pits the best players in Alberta against one another, with the purpose of selecting players to represent at the Western Canadian Champion-

ships later this month.

For Predators U18 group on the boys side in central Alberta, it’s a bit different story. It’s facing a development year where it hopes to turn many of its Grade 11 players into a strong side next season.

“We think we have a strong team coming in, so we’re interested to see how they finish. I think we’re going to take a good step forward from this last year,” Poelzer said.

“So we’re excited about it. Still a young team, mostly Grade 11. We’re hoping it’s a great foundation year.”

In each of the u16 age groups in central Alberta, growth is key. For the girls, last year they were chasing players and this season, they actually had to make cuts. It’s that growth that is encouraging to Poelzer.

“They are a growing group and their main goal this weekend is to have a strong development point.

We’re a smaller market so we’re just

not as competitive at that stage. Our best opportunity is longer-term development,” he said.

“For them to have this first opportunity to represent at this level and push hard for these next three years is really what we’re trying to do. There’s still a lot of great players.”

To open the day Friday, the Predators U16 girls lost 33-17 to the deep south, while the boys won 25-7 over deep south.

Saturday night is also a big opportunity for those young rugby players to see the future of the sport.

The Alberta Wolfpack Senior Men squares off against B.C. at Great Chief Park at 7 p.m. Many of the players in that contest have or will represent Canada on the international stage.

U16 and U18 games take place throughout the day Saturday at Titans Park, with the U16 finals set for Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The U18 finals are Sunday at 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.

ay 4 saw plenty of movers and shakers at the Ponoka Stampede.

With cowboys and cowgirls jockey for position in Monday’s final, plenty of big-time performances turned heads Friday.

Ty Erickson vaulted into second in steer wrestling with the fastest time of the week Friday. Tanner Brunner still leads all cowboys with a two-run time of 11.3, just ahead of Erickson’s 11.8. Ponoka’s Ben Ramey sits sixth overall at 13.7.

Jacob Stemo of Bashaw had the best bareback ride of the afternoon, putting up an 82.75-point ride on Calgary Stampede Soap Bubbles. He is right on the cutline for Monday’s final, with two rounds left to go. Clint Laye had an 80.75-point ride and Travis Heed notched a 75.50. Spur Lacasse is still out in front at 88.25.

Texas cowboy Reese Riemer also made some noise Friday in tie-down roping. He had a quick 7.8-second run to push his aggregate to 18.2-seconds and into second place overall behind Shane Hanchey at 17.9. Red Deer County’s Virgil Poffenroth is now on the outside looking in for Monday’s final, still sitting at 21.2.

No cowgirl has been able to touch Texas’ Hailey Kinsel, who still leads barrel racing with a 17.511. Eryn Coy of High River pushed her way temporarily into Monday’s final with an 18.149. Ponoka’s Shayna Weir and Innisfail’s Sydney Daines are also right on the bubble for the final with their times from earlier this week.

Tyler Bingham had a big bull ride to shake up the leaderboard Friday.

The Honeyvile, Utah, native put up an 86.75-point ride on Kubota Summer Warrior to move into second place overall. Sage Kimzey scored 86 with On Target and Garrett Smith also had a strong day atop Dense Fog with an 85.25.

ike the rest of the hockey world, Taylor Hall watched as John Tavares listened to interested teams make their pitches a year ago.

Tavares, the captain of the New York Islanders, held all the cards.

In the end, five clubs got in the room with the star centre and his camp.

The Islanders were among them, but so were the Toronto Maple Leafs.

While he felt a strong pull to the only franchise he’d ever known — New York picked the Oakville, Ont., product first overall in 2009 — Tavares eventually landed on going home, signing a seven-year, US$77-million deal with Toronto as an unrestricted free agent.

Fast-forward 12 months, and Hall said seeing that whole process play out has changed the free-agency game.

“You’re starting to see players want to — I don’t know if it’s paid what they’re worth — but they want to see what’s out there and see what the other 30 teams have to offer,” said Hall, a winger with the New Jersey Devils. ”That’s in the players’ rights. That’s what we fought for.

Leafs ink Kapanen, Johnsson to new deals Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas said last week he was close to getting new contracts signed with pending restricted free agent forwards Kasperi Kapanen and Andreas Johnsson.

The parties put pen to paper on Friday.

The Leafs announced Kapanen has agreed to a three-year contract extension with an annual average value of US$3.2 million, while Johnsson’s deal is worth $3.4 million annually over four years.

The announcements come after Toronto managed to get Patrick Marleau’s $6.25-million salary cap hit off the books with the veteran forward’s recent trade to the Carolina Hurricanes. Carolina bought out the final year of Marleau’s contract Thursday, making him an unrestricted free agent.

While signing both Kapanen and Johnsson checks off a couple of boxes for the Leafs, they still need to get a new deal done with fellow RFA and star winger Mitch Marner with free agency set to open Monday.

Masoli leads Ticats past Alouettes

Tiger-Cats 41 Alouettes 10 AMILTON — Jeremiah Masoli threw for over 400 yards with a TD while running for two others as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats dispatched the Montreal Alouettes 41-10 on Friday night.

Hamilton (3-0) opened a season with three straight wins for the first time since 2004. That year, though, the Ticats proceeded to fall to 3-5.

Masoli finished 25-of-31 passing for 417 yards but was also intercepted three times. Masoli threw for 338 yards and three TDs and ran for another in last week’s lopsided 64-14 road win over Toronto.

Ticats receivers Brandon Banks (seven catches, 152 yards) and Bralon Addison (eight catches, 121 yards) were impressive. Banks also thrilled the announced Tim Hortons Field gathering of 22,407 with a 30-yard touchdown run while Addison narrowly missed throwing a TD strike on an option pass.

Not to be outdone, Ticats rookie Sean Thomas Erlington, a Montreal native, had five receptions for 102 yards with a TD and two-point convert. He also had 47 yards rushing on nine carries after running for 109 yards on 12 carries last week against Toronto.

under centre to start the second half but Adams returned later in the third and finished 14-of-24 passing for 173 yards with a TD and interception while rushing for 38 yards on nine carries before giving way to Schiltz for good in the fourth.

Hamilton’s defence registered six sacks in the contest.

Adams hit Jake Wieneke on a 27yard TD strike at 14:11 of the third to cut Hamilton’s lead to 26-10. But the Ticats countered with Masoli’s 10yard TD run at 4:13 of the fourth, then Masoli hit Thomas Erlington on the two-point convert.

Masoli added a one-yard TD run at 11:12. The two teams return to Montreal next Thursday night.

Lirim Hajrullahu boosted Hamilton’s lead to 26-3 with a 34-yard field goal at 10:22 of the third.

Hamilton opened the second half impressively as Masoli hit Thomas Erlington on a 75-yard TD strike just 1:17 into the third. Masoli then found Nikola Kalinic for the two-point convert, giving the Ticats a 23-3 advantage.

Dane Evans had Hamilton’s other touchdown. Addison added a twopoint convert while Hajrullahu finished with two converts and a field goal.

Banks’s TD run at 9:06 gave Hamilton its 12-point advantage and culminated a tidy four-play, 75-yard possession. Bede hit a 46-yard field goal at 7:42 after the home team failed to recover a short kickoff that gave the

Lions coach DeVone Claybrooks facing familiar foes in Calgary

ALGARY — DeVone Claybrooks says his 2018 Grey Cup ring is still in its box.

The new B.C. Lions head coach spent the previous decade in the Calgary Stampeders organization as a player, defensive line coach and defensive co-ordinator.

Claybrooks won the second of his two Grey Cup rings as a Stampeder

last year.

He and other former Stamps now playing for the Lions received their 2018 rings prior to a pre-season game between the two clubs June 7 in Vancouver.

“I haven’t put it on at all,” Claybrooks said Friday. “My mom got into town in Vancouver last night and I didn’t even break it out and let her see it.

“It’s the old adage you can’t move

forward if you keep looking back. It’s a great memory and it’s one we’ll talk about and cherish, but right now the focus is trying to win one in 2019.”

Claybrooks developed into a CFL head coach in Calgary under the guidance of general manager John Hufnagel and head coach Dave Dickenson.

The former defensive tackle returns to McMahon Stadium on Saturday wearing enemy colours when the Stampeders host the Lions.

“I know how Huf and Dave are,” Claybrooks said. “We’re all good friends, really good friends, and still super-close.

“I know once the ball goes out there, they want to beat the snot out of my guys and I want my guys to beat the snot out of them.”

Divisional rivals with high-priced quarterbacks are looking for their first wins of the season.

B.C.’s Mike Reilly and Calgary’s Bo Levi Mitchell signed four-year contracts in the off-season for $2.9 million and a reported $2.8 million respectively.

The two pivots have a combined

five Grey Cup starts and three Most Outstanding Player awards in the last five years between them.

Reilly and Mitchell are the only active quarterbacks on the CFL’s all-time top-20 list in career passing yards. Mitchell is 252 yards short of a career 25,000, while Reilly has 28,098.

But the Lions dropped two in a row to open this season. Reilly was sacked seven times in last week’s 39-23 loss to the Edmonton Eskimos.

Calgary is coming off a bye week after blowing an early 12-point lead and falling 32-28 to Ottawa in its home-opener.

The defending Grey Cup champions started 13 drives in their own end in Week 1 and didn’t score.

“When you have a bigger lead, you should be able to put the game away,” Mitchell said.

“We have a unique opportunity to come off a bye week early in the season, bounce back from a loss that we don’t normally have early on.

“I think that’s important. We’ve got to prove ourselves and prove our identity as a team.”

Gurriel Jr. goes deep twice, Jays beat Royals

Blue Jays 6 Royals 2 oronto Blue Jays left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. smashed two of his team’s four home runs in a 6-2 victory against the Kansas City Royals on Friday evening.

Gurriel Jr. continued to make a convincing case that he should be Toronto’s representative for the MLB all-star game on July 7 in Cleveland.

The rosters will be announced on Sunday.

The Blue Jays fell behind 2-0 before a sparse crowd of 18,399 at Rogers Centre. Gurriel Jr., however, tied the game with a two-run shot to centre field in the sixth inning.

After veteran designated hitter Eric Sogard belted a solo shot in the seventh inning to put Toronto ahead for good, Gurriel Jr. smashed his second of the game with a towering blast to left field.

The 25-year-old Gurriel Jr. now has four homers in two games and has smacked the most in the American League with 14 since May 24 when he promoted from the triple-A Buffalo Bisons.

Blue Jays right fielder Randal Grichuk hit a two-run shot in the eighth inning.

end series pits two of the lowest-run producing teams in the 30-team league. The Royals entered the game in 23rd spot with 346 runs, 10 ahead of the 26th-place Blue Jays.

Blue Jays right-handed pitcher Sean Reid-Foley made his second start of the season. He lasted 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out three Royals.

After Kansas City catcher Martin Maldonado’s home run in the fifth inning, the Royals came back an inning later with another run. Second baseman Nicky Lopez drilled a double down the right-field line and scored on Alex Gordon’s sharp single through the middle of the infield.

Veteran Royals left-handed starter Danny Duffy had held the Blue Jays to three hits through five innings. One of those hits was a single to centre field for Toronto shortstop Freddy Galvis to extend his hit streak to nine games.

A leadoff bloop single to left field in the sixth inning for Toronto rookie Vladimir Guerrero Jr. set the table for Gurriel Jr’s two-run, full-count blast to tie the game.

Gurriel Jr. also continued to exhibit improvement defensively in left field. He made an excellent play Maldonado’s double down the left-field line in the seventh inning to prohibit Royals infielder Cheslor Cuthbert from scoring from first base. Maldonado checked in with three hits, a homer

Toronto reliever Ken Giles secured a Toronto win in the ninth inning. He was set up for success by right-hander Daniel Hudson’s fantastic eighth inning. After surrendering a leadoff double to Gordon, Hudson struck out the next three batters to record the win.

This was the first outing of a 10game, 10-day homestand for the Blue Jays, which matches the most extended stay at Rogers Centre this summer for Toronto. There is another 10-gamer in mid-August. This homestand concludes next week with three-game series against both the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles.

Desert Ride looks to end Sam-Son Farm’s drought

ORONTO — Steve Bahen and Desert Ride face a formidable challenge in returning Sam-Son Farm to the winner’s circle at the $1-million Queen’s Plate.

The Woodbine Oaks champion will be the lone filly in the 14-horse field Saturday at Woodbine Racetrack. And what’s more, she’ll break from the No. 1 post as an 8/1 pick. But Bahen has defied long odds in this race before. In 2002, the Montreal native rode T J’s Lucky Moon to victory in the opening leg of Canada’s Triple Crown as a whopping 82/1 longshot. And even in the Oaks on June 8, Bahen took the daughter of Candy Ride from last in the 10-horse field to victory also as an 8/1 pick. That was Bahen’s third career Oaks win.

“That’s kind of her a bit,” trainer Neil Howard said. “That’s been her running style.

“She likes to get her feet under her a bit. I was so happy to have that 1 1/8 miles for her. I didn’t think she was going to get there but going past the 3/16ths pole you had that relieved feeling that she was running well and going to finish well. As tough as these races are — you always want to win — as long as they run well and come back good you have to be satisfied with that. Winning is a bonus” “She is a charm … she just does not concern herself with anything. She has a wonderful mind.

Good horses, most of the time, they have that good demeanour. And she certainly does. It just makes everything much better.”

Sam-Son Farm horses have won five Queen’s Plates but none since 2009 when Eurico Rosa da Silva rode Eye of the Leopard to victory at Woodbine Racetrack. Sam-Son Farm was founded in the 1970s by industrialist Ernie Samuel and won the first of its 10 Sovereign Awards as Canada’s top owner in 1980. Sam-Son has also been named the country’s outstanding breeder on seven occasions.

Samuel’s first Queen’s Plate winner came in 1988 with Regal Intention. Others followed with heralded filly Dance Smartly (1991), Scatter The Gold (2000) and filly Dancethruthedawn (2001), that one coming a year after Samuel passed away.

Samuel’s wife, Liza, and daughter, Tammy Samuel-Balaz, managed the operation until their deaths in 2008. Samuel’s son, Mark, is now CEO with Rick Balaz, Tammy’s husband, serves as president/GM.

Brett Moffitt wins at Chicagoland for 2nd straight season JOLIET, Ill. — Brett Moffitt won the NASCAR Truck Series race at Chicagoland Speedway for the second year Friday night, building a big lead for his second victory of the season.

And this time the defending series champion got to celebrate with a burnout in the No. 24 GMS Racing Chevrolet.

Two weeks ago in Iowa, Moffitt was declared the winner when first-place finisher Ross Chastain was disqualified after his truck was found to be too low in a postrace inspection.

IMBLEDON, England — Felix Auger-Aliassime will face Vasek Pospisil in an all-Canadian first-round match at Wimbledon.

In Friday’s draw, the No. 19-seeded Auger-Aliassime of Montreal was placed against a Vancouver player set to compete for the first time since October after undergoing back surgery. Fittingly, the match is scheduled to take place on Canada Day. The 18-year-old Auger-Aliassime, who has rocketed up the rankings this year, is looking for his first career Grand Slam win in his second main-draw appearance. It’s his first Grand Slam of the year after failing to qualify for the Australian Open and missing the French Open because of injury.

Pospisil, 29, is ranked 188th in the world, but has a protected ranking of 73rd — allowing him to make his return at Wimbledon.

Auger-Aliassime won his only match against Pospisil last year at a hard-court event in Indian Wells, Calif.

Stephen Marr lead Canada past Italy in men’s volleyball BRASILIA, Brazil — Stephen Maar was the top scorer with 19 points as Canada downed Italy 3-1 on Friday in the last weekend of pool play at the FIVB men’s volleyball league.

Canada won the match 15-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-18, giving Poland the advantage in the race to the final six of the competition July 10-14 in Chicago.

The reigning world champion Polish had defeated Japan 3-1 earlier Friday and now stand at 9-4, compared to both Italy and Canada at 8-5.

ETROIT — Cameron Champ played one of the best stretches on the PGA Tour this season, matching the lowest nine-hole score and the longest birdie-eagle streak.

Champ had an 8-under 28 on the front nine thanks, shooting under par for six straight holes.

“The hole looked pretty big for a while,” he said.

The rookie cooled off on a steamy day with a 1-over 37 on the back nine, closing with a bogey after pushing a 4-foot putt just to the right and past the cup for a 7-under 65.

Nate Lashley took advantage of the opportunity to put his name on top of the leaderboard for the second straight

day. Lashley shot a 67, putting him at 14-under 130 for a one-shot lead at scoring-friendly Detroit Golf Club.

“A lot of the weeks the courses are really difficult, so it’s a nice change coming here,” said Lashley, who is ranked No. 353 in the world.

Charles Howell III (67) was two shots back. J.T. Poston (63) and Ryan Armour (69) were another stroke back.

Mackenzie Hughes (70) of Dundas, Ont., was the low Canadian, finishing the day tied for 21st at 8 under. Roger Sloan (68) of Merritt, B.C., and Nick Taylor (70) of Abbotsford, B.C., tied for 44th at 6 under.

Mike Weir of Brights Grove, Ont., Ben Silverman of Thornhill, Ont., Adam Svensson of Surrey, B.C., and Corey Conners of Listowel, Ont., all missed the cut.

Dustin Johnson, the world’s second-ranked player, and U.S. Open cham-

pion Gary Woodland finished at 2 under to miss the cut by three strokes.

“It just seemed like every time I hit a bad shot, it was in the wrong spot and made bogey,” said Johnson, who had four of five bogeys on his back nine.

Woodland opened with a 72 in his first start since winning his first major and bounced back with a 69, an up-and-down round with eight birdies and five bogeys.

He and Johnson will have an extra couple of days to prepare for the British Open.

“Yeah, I need to get ready, but I’m excited about Portrush,” Woodland said.

“I’ve heard great things. But I’ve got some work to do, just tighten some things up. I wasn’t prepared as much as I probably should have been this week. But two weeks off, I’ll have plenty of time and I’ll be ready to go.”

ONDON — High cheese comes to the land of high tea on Saturday.

When Boston’s Rick Porcello throws the first pitch to the New York Yankees at Olympic Stadium, the national pastime of the onetime colony will try to plant itself in the mother country.

After looking at the cozy distance — 385 feet to centre with a 16-foot wall — Yankees and Red Sox batters hope to run up some cricket-like scoring totals, perhaps even shattering the famous triangular light banks.

“Hopefully, we’ll poke a couple out,” Yankees slugger Aaron Judge said Friday, smiling after batting practice on a sunny afternoon. “It flies pretty well. It got good carry.”

The teams arrived Thursday on overnight flights after playing day games. Judge, who is 6-foot-7, ambled around London largely unrecognized.

“I was actually walking near the London Eye yesterday and I ran into a couple people that had the Yankee hat on,” Judge said. “They had no idea who I was or anything. I said this is all right. ‘I’m Aaron, great to meet you.’”

About 1,500 invited fans attended batting prac-

tice, and there were signs baseball had entered soccer country. Some Red Sox supporters improvised on a soccer chant to honour a Boston broadcaster, repeating “One Jerry Remy! There’s only one Jerry Remy!” to the tune of “Guantanamera.”

Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling was in the clubhouse of the Yankees, who partnered with City’s parent company to own the New York City team in Major League Soccer. Players in both locker rooms had souvenir jerseys in the claret and blue of West Ham, the soccer team that calls the stadium home. And infielder Gio Urshela dribbled a soccer ball in left field.

While both teams will wear white home jerseys, they clearly are being treated as visitors being given the royal treatment — Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex and sixth in line to the throne, is scheduled to accompany Invictus Games athletes to the mound for the ceremonial first pitch.

Yet, trappings of home abounded.

Clubhouses were built over the Olympic warmup track under the stands to emulate the spacious surroundings major leaguers typically enjoy. Movie director Spike Lee walked around in foul territory and the grounds crew performed to the Village People’s “YMCA,” as they are wont to do in the Bronx.

Delaware North, the stadium food contractor,

brought over George Raub, a 39-year-old from Georgia, to teach staff how to hawk food in the stands.

“It’s all about showmanship and bringing them outside of their shell,” he said. “Joked a little bit: If they’ve ever wanted to be a West End actor here in London, this is their chance to really showcase their skills.”

Players tested the artificial turf — a first for a Yankees-Red Sox game. While the dimensions resemble the cookie-cutter ballparks of the 1960s and ’70s, there is a large expanse of foul territory, like the Oakland Coliseum, making backing up bases paramount.

“There’s so much more space and so many more places for the ball to go,” Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner said.

The triangular light banks leave unusual shadows. The roof, built to protect soccer supporters from rain, overhangs the plate. That necessitated a ground rule that fouls pinging the roof are dead balls. Left to enforce it is the umpiring crew of Ed Hickox (plate Saturday), Carlos Torres (first), Dana DeMuth (second) and Angel Hernandez (third).

Boston arrived after a charter flight on the Crystal Boeing 777-200 , configured to seat 88 people in lie-flat seats and with a dining area resembling a hotel.

New-York based Constellation Brands Inc. has had financial troubles in its first quarter, which has been compounded by the stake it has in Canada’s Canopy Growth Corp., which also posted disappointing year-end results.

onstellation Brands Inc. was “not pleased” with Canopy Growth Corp.’s recent year-end results as the alcohol giant recorded a US$106-million loss in its own financial first quarter in connection with its stake in the Canadian cannabis company.

The New York-based alcoholic beverage company’s chief executive Bill Newlands, however, said challenges were to be expected, pointing to the slow rollout of recreational pot stores in Ontario, among other headwinds for the pot industry.

“While we remain happy with our investment in the cannabis space and its long-term potential, we were not pleased with Canopy’s recent reported year-end results,” Newlands said on a call discussing Constellation’s quarterly earnings on Friday.

“However, we continue to aggressively support Canopy on a more focused, long-term strategy to win markets and form factors that matter while paving a clear path to profitability.”

Newlands’ comments come as the U.S.-based maker of Corona beer and

Kim Crawford wines posted its financial first-quarter 2020 results, delivering revenues that beat market expectations as its earnings were weighed down by Canopy Growth’s equity losses.

Constellation posted net sales of US$2.1 billion for the three-month period ended May 31, up from US$2.05 billion a year earlier and more than the US$2.07 billion expected by analysts, according to Thomson Reuters Eikon.

Constellation reported a loss attributable to shareholders for the quarter of US$245.4 million or US$1.30, down from a quarterly profit of US$743.8 million or $3.77 a year prior.

However, on a diluted comparable basis commonly referred to as adjusted, Constellation reported earnings per share of US$2.21, up from US$2.20 a year ago and beating the US$2.04 expected by analysts.

Excluding Canopy Growth equity losses, the New York-based company says it earned US$2.40 per share during the quarter.

Constellation said equity losses in connection with its significant stake in the Canadian cannabis company totalled US$106 million on a reported basis or US$54.4 million on an compa-

rable basis.

Shares of the alcoholic beverage company on the New York Stock Exchange were up 4.8 per cent in early afternoon on Friday to US$197.21. Canopy’s stock on the Toronto Stock Exchange was down 0.7 per cent to $52.97.

Constellation, which recognizes earnings from Canopy’s results on a two-month lag, holds a 38 per cent stake in the cannabis company.

Last week, Canopy reported a wider-than-expected fourth-quarter net loss attributable to shareholders of $335.6 million or 98 cents per share, despite a jump in net revenue to $94.1 million that beat market estimates.

Bruce Linton, the chief executive of the Smiths Falls, Ont.-based company, said Canopy invested heavily during the quarter for longer-term growth, such as boosting its production capacity and preparing for the launch of edibles and other next-generation pot products once legal later this year.

He added that as Canopy pushes in to the legal U.S. market for CBD — or cannabidiol, the non-intoxicating compound found in hemp and cannabis — the company is aiming to be EBITDA-positive in roughly two

years.

Newlands on Friday spoke optimistically about Canopy’s U.S. CBD products and the rollout of cannabis vapes, beverages and edibles in Canada, the latter of which he expects “will command high margins.”

Constellation is also “very excited” about Canopy’s recently completed deal to acquire U.S. multi-state operator Acreage Holdings once federally permissible, as it provides a path to a “leading position,” he said.

Cannabis is legal for medical or recreational use in several U.S. states, but remains an illegal Schedule 1 drug under federal law.

Shareholders of Canopy and Acreage voted last week to approve the deal, valued at roughly US$3.4 billion.

“What we remain excited about is that this is going to be a big, long-term business,” Newlands said Friday.

“And we are working with Canopy, almost on a daily basis, to ensure that we are all focused on the right things.

The things that are going to drive the business, the things and the form factors that are going to matter in a way that gets to ultimate profitability for that business in an appropriate time frame.”

MARKETS CLOSE TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index capped strong gains in June by rising Friday ahead of the holiday weekend.

The S&P/TSX composite index closed up 74.47 points to 16,382.20.

Although the index was down nearly one percentage point on the week, it gained 2.2 per cent for the month and 15.2 per cent in the first half of the year.

U.S. markets likewise rose ahead of a meeting at the G20 between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

While some investors hope for positive signals about a resolution to the trade war between the world’s two largest economies, Erik Bregar, head of currency strategy at the Exchange Bank of Canada, is more doubtful.

“I feel like the market might get a whole lot of a nothing burger,” he said in an interview on the last trading day for the month in Canada.

“So long as we don’t get any major negative headlines out of Osaka (Japan), the dollar, gold, treasuries, stocks could kind of open up Monday where we closed out today.”

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 73.38 points at 26,599.96. The S&P 500 index was up 16.84 points at 2,941.76, while the Nasdaq composite was up 38.49 points at 8,006.24.

U.S. markets outpaced the TSX in June, with one day remaining in the month for U.S. trading.

Markets were up as much as 7.4 per cent for the month and between 15.3 and 21.6 per cent year-to-date.

Expectations of interest rate cuts by central banks in the U.S. and Europe has buoyed markets and caused the U.S. dollar to weaken and gold to strengthen.

The Canadian dollar traded at an average of 76.41 cents US, up from an average of 76.27 cents US on Thursday — a four-month high.

Ten of the 11 major sectors on the TSX were up on the day, led by consumer discretionary as Canada Goose Holdings Inc. gained three per cent and Aritzia Inc. was up 2.4 per cent.

The materials sector followed closely behind with Yamana Gold Inc. and Centerra Gold Inc. increasing 2.8 and

2.2 per cent respectively.

The August gold contract was up $1.70 at US$1,413.70 an ounce. That’s a 7.8-per-cent gain for the month and up 10.3 per cent in the first six months of the year. The September copper contract was down 0.3 of a cent on the day at $2.71 a pound.

Crude prices were fairly flat until taking a tumble at the end of day after Europe said it will launch a channel to allow trade with Iran, bypassing U.S. sanctions.

The August crude contract was down 96 cents at US$58.47 per barrel and the August natural gas contract was down 1.6 cents at $2.31 per mmBTU. However, the energy sector was up 0.27 per cent led by share gains from Frontera Energy Corp. and Encana Corp.

OPEC countries are meeting Tuesday with some members wanting the cartel to deepen production cuts in the second-half of the year.

OSAKA, Japan — A trade war between two economic titans will face a critical junction Saturday, when President Donald Trump meets China’s Xi Jinping at a moment when both sides are signalling a desire to de-escalate the year-long conflict, yet seem unwilling to compromise.

Pope expresses sadness over image of drowned father, child VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis on Wednesday expressed sadness over the fate of the father and young daughter who drowned in the Rio Grande while trying to cross into the United States.

“With immense sadness, the Holy Father has seen the images of the father and his baby daughter who drowned in the Rio Grande River while trying to cross the border between Mexico and the United States,” the Vatican’s interim spokesman, Alessandro Gisotti, said in a statement.

“The pope is profoundly saddened

by their death, and is praying for them and for all migrants who have lost their lives while seeking to flee war and misery,” he said.

Photographs, which have been widely published around the world, show the bodies of a father and his 23-month-old daughter face down along the banks of the Rio Grande near Matamoros, Mexico, across the river from Brownsville, Texas.

Earlier, in off-the-cuff comments during his weekly audience in St. Peter’s Square, the pontiff complimented the people of Mexico for being “so welcoming to migrants. God bless you.” A group of Mexicans attending the audience cheered and waved a Mexican flag in response.

Francis has frequently been vocal in his support of Mexico’s efforts to help migrants and critical of the U.S. for blocking them at the border.

During a visit to the U.S.-Mexico border in 2016, he criticized then-pres-

idential candidate Donald Trump, suggesting that anyone who wanted to build a wall along the border was “not a Christian.”

In April, the pontiff donated $500,000 to help migrants in Mexico, offering assistance to local projects that provide food, lodging and basic necessities.

Pope offers Chinese clergy way to register with civil agency VATICAN CITY — The Holy See on Friday instructed Catholic clergy in China to profess loyalty to Catholic doctrine when signing a document, required by a new Chinese law, which obliges them to accept the principle of a state-sanctioned Catholic church that doesn’t recognize

supreme papal authority to appoint bishops.

China’s estimated 12 million Catholics are split between those belonging to the official church and an underground church loyal to the pope.

Pope Francis is seeking to heal decades of estrangement between the Vatican and China’s Communist authorities. Beijing has insisted it, and not the pope, has final say over appointment bishops.

Friday’s guidelines noted that many Catholic pastors are “deeply disturbed” by China’s insistence that bishops and priests civilly register in order to carry out pastoral duties and that some had asked the Holy See to indicate a “concrete” approach to their dilemma.

But the Vatican guidelines also recognize some of the clergy loyal to the pontiff don’t want to register at all, saying, “the Holy See does not intend to force anyone’s conscience.”

NFB chair reappointed amid concerns from filmmakers

ORONTO — Claude Joli-Coeur has been reappointed government film commissioner and chair of the National Film Board of Canada amid a dispute between the organization and a group of directors about its budget expenditures.

On Thursday as Canadian Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez announced Joli-Coeur’s mandate renewal for another three years, a group of more than 250 freelance directors who call themselves ONF/NFB Creation raised concerns over the reappointment.

“The National Film Board is in crisis,” Oscar-winning filmmaker Chris Landreth said in a statement from the group.

“Only a small portion of the NFB’s government allocation now goes to making films, which translates to fewer works produced and fewer opportunities for artists and filmmakers.”

ONF/NFB Creation alleges that “in the past 16 years, there has been a 56 per cent decline in funding for films, while spending in administration, marketing and executive salaries has steadily risen.” The group says that spending includes a 21 per cent increase on non-filmmaker salaries, and a 45 per cent increase on institutional, legal and human resources services. In an interview, Joli-Coeur disputed the claim about fewer works produced, noting that when it comes to managing their resources, the NFB’s core mandate ”has been to make the biggest allocation as possible to production.”

“Over the last five years the number of productions that we’ve been doing has been increasing,” Joli-Coeur said Friday by phone from Montreal.

In the NFB’s next annual report he says the organization will declare 88 productions for 2018/19 — an increase from 72 productions in ‘17/18. The two years prior also saw 67 and 43 projects respectively.

Joli-Coeur noted that the NFB has faced a couple of steep budget cuts since the mid-1990s and allocates “a fair amount of money to distribution,”

Joli-Coeur also pointed to the NFB’s annual report of 2017-2018, which has been audited by the auditor-general of Canada.

According to the report, in 2018 50 per cent of the approximately $72-million budget went to production: $36 million on audiovisual production, another $25 million on distribution (titled in the report as “accessibility and audience engagement”), and $11 million on “internal services.”

This year, out of a budget of $67 million, roughly 50 per cent went to production, Joli-Coeur said.

sically coming back all the time with those figures. And what can we say?

Oscar-nominated Vancouver animator/director David Fine, who is quoted in the ONF/NFB Creation statement, said in an email to The Canadian Press that the group’s information “comes from internal NFB sources who know for sure that actual budgets have reduced.” “(The NFB) accounting also includes many internal admin costs when they tabulate production spending,” said Fine, whose 2018 NFB animated short Animal Behaviour, made with Alison Snowden, got an Oscar nomination.

“In fact, the most reliable gauge is money spent outside on directors and

animators and filmmakers, and that’s the telling number which has gone down considerably over the years.”

Joli-Coeur said the NFB disagrees with the way the ONF/NFB Creation has culled its financial information, noting “at the end of the day we should just use the audited financial reports.”

“I’m a public servant, so I’m not someone who has something to hide or to make bigger personal profit or things like that,” said Joli-Coeur, who was first appointed government film commissioner and chair of the NFB for a term of five years in December 2014. He took over when Tom Perlmutter stepped down.

“At the end of the day I’m just using what is the basis of all the public accounts.”

EW YORK — How does one willingly, even eagerly, walk into a sunlit nightmare like Ari Aster’s Midsommar? For Florence Pugh, the motivation came while watching the camera zoom between Toni Collette’s legs in a particularly balletic moment during the feverish climax of Aster’s debut, Hereditary.

“I remember imagining what she would have had to do. I thought: ‘Yeah, I really want to be a part of this,’” recalls Pugh. “It’s not like I go: ‘I really want to play a lady who goes insane in a field.’”

In Midsommar, Pugh stars as Dani Ardor, a grief-stricken college student who shortly after her family is killed is a grisly manner, joins her long-term boyfriend (Jack Reynor) and his friends on a summer trip to the pastoral Swedish compound of Harga. She goes full of existential dread and relationship anxiety; their inevitable break-up has been merely postponed by Dani’s tragedy. The increasingly dark and hallucinogenic pagan rituals of a seemingly idyllic ancient Swedish cult, it turns out, are less than ideal couples therapy.

Family to paddle out into ocean for Beth Chapman memorial HONOLULU — A Hawaii memorial service for Dog the Bounty Hunter reality TV show co-star Beth Chapman will feature a prayer followed by family and friends paddling out into the ocean.

Chapman died Wednesday after a battle with cancer. She was 51.

Chapman and her husband Duane “Dog” Chapman starred in the A&E show until it was cancelled in 2012.

They later starred in Country Music Television’s Dog & Beth: On the Hunt.

WGN America is in production on Dog’s Most Wanted. A trailer for the show was released earlier this month.

The plaintiff is one of four accusers in a separate criminal case . The suit was filed just before Kelly was charged in February with criminal sexual abuse. He denies ever abusing anyone.

large or small, the satisfying experience of sitting in the open air will be enhanced with some well-planned lighting. Just like inside, your outdoor needs are diverse. Task lighting if you are cooking or like to read; ambient light that offers a warm glow to the setting; spots and light stands to keep steps and pathways safe; decorative lights to show off greenery and flower gardens.

Electric lights require wiring, which can be strung along the porch or patio roof or overhang. Wiring can be hidden underground. Light beams that stream up from the ground show off building architecture, entranceways and garden gates in a magical, dreamy way. These can be solar powered, but make sure they get enough sunlight. LEDs are lighting the way outdoors with modern placements such as hidden under contemporary seating and tables. White or coloured light projects up and around the base giving the feeling that you are floating on a cloud.

Semi-finished basement an economical compromise F

inishing a basement is one of the most popular home improvement jobs in Canada because it’s an effective way to increase living space in your house. The thing is, there are two drawbacks to finishing a basement in the usual way. First, it’s expensive.

Not as expensive as building an addition onto your house, but it’s still Steve easy to spend well into five figures Maxwell finishing a basement as it’s typically done with insulation, drywall and floor coverings. And second, a typical finished basement is vulnerable to serious damage from water leaks and moisture. Mould growth and poor indoor air quality throughout your house is a very real threat if a finished basement gets wet.

Creating a more economical, less vulnerable and more attractive basement is where something I call the “semi-finished” basement strategy can help.

If all you need is space for the kids to play, an area for hobbies or sewing, and maybe a basic extra bathroom downstairs and some laundry space, you really don’t need to go all out with drywall, insulation and luxurious flooring right away. The thing about basements is they’re not either finished or non-finished. The semi-finished basement is an economical, low-stress, in-between option that too few people consider.

The key to a useful and inviting semi-finished basement is making the space look nicer, feel more comfortable and have better lighting – all without creating new finished wall surfaces, ceilings and floors. This approach saves money and also eliminates the risk of water damage and mould growth if your basement is not quite reliably dry every year.

No basement should ever be finished with new floors and interior walls unless it’s 100 per cent reliably dry, 100 per cent of the time as proven from at least a few years’ observation.

There are three main steps to the semi-finished basement strategy. First, coat the floor with a tough, thick, catalyzed floor coating, then lay down removable, interlocking rubber floor tiles in areas where people will stand or kids will play. It’s amazing how much better this approach makes any basement space look and feel. If you do nothing else but improve the floor, you’ll love your basement much more.

Second, clean and paint the walls with a bright colour – white is my favourite. One hundred per cent acrylic latex paint sticks to brick, block or poured concrete walls very well. A shop vac is the best tool to get the bulk of dirt off basement walls.

Third, vacuum the floor joists, pipes and wires overhead, then paint that area a light colour, too.

I’ll admit that painting areas like these is not easy because of all the obstructions you need to work around, but the results are very good looking, in an informal and rustic way.

Low cost is the biggest benefit of the semi-finished approach to your basement. For less than $1,000 in materials and your own labour you can transform a dark, uninviting basement into the kind of place kids can play. In fact, I’d argue that it’s easier to enjoy a semi-finished basement compared with a fully finished one during the kid-rearing years because you won’t be as up-tight about damage and wear.

I recently helped a young couple transform their dark, 100 year-old basement into a play and hobby space and we used a catalyzed floor coating as the first part of the process. Rocksolid Garage Coat is

The outdoor furnishings market has been dominated for years by wicker-look resin furniture and beachy prints. Spindly folding lawn chairs have given way to deep, comfy seating, and fabric choices have grown from sweaty, rough plastics to weatherproof linen, soft cotton, even velvet. The living room has most cer-

tainly moved outdoors.

But for those whose design sensibility skews toward the avant garde, there haven’t been a lot of options.

Until now. More and more designers and makers are producing cool, imaginative pieces for backyard and balcony. If you’re into artsy décor, there’s no reason why your outdoor space can’t reflect that as well.

innovative outdoor sculptures, which play with light and landscape. In his Oxfordshire studio, Harber and his team create sculptures, water features and sundials out of metal. Sunlight filters through a piece called Mantle, made of bronze petals fused together and gilded on the inside; the light transforms the middle into molten gold.

One of his most popular pieces, Torus, is a circular expanse of super-polished steel that reflects the landscape or water in front of it. It’s there in front of you, yet appears transparent.

Armillary spheres were the first thing Harber learned to make, and he says the marriage of art and science drew him to the form.

“I’ve made (them) for tiny cottage gardens, and for hotels; they have a universal appeal,” he says.

Available in brass, steel and bronze, the spheres can be custom engraved. Some people have commissioned phrases with personal meaning; others have had their spheres etched with family names, house names, latitude and longitude, or distances to significant destinations.

In his Brooklyn, New York, studio Opiary, sculptor Robert Remer takes a more freeform approach to his artful outdoor pieces. His sculptures, planters and seating, made of steel armatures and resin-fortified cement, look otherworldly.

The Archaic planter collection of abstract, organic shapes resembles pieces of dinosaur skeleton or water-eroded rock. Little niches throughout the pieces can be planted with moss, alpines and succulents.

The Drillium chair and chaise were inspired by aircraft construction and

bones. Curvy, sensuous lines with circular cutouts and little crevices for plants contrast with the hefty presence of the concrete material. You could see these pieces on an interplanetary patio.

The Museum of Modern Art’s store is carrying Moroso’s M’Afrique collection of colorful outdoor furniture, handmade in Senegal with woven materials and painted steel. M’Afrique showcases the region’s innovative weaving craft; Moroso teamed with designers like Tord Boontje to create the collection.

Among the pieces: the Banjooli table, with bright yellow polyethylene cords woven to evoke overlapping feathers and inspired by the courtship dance of the ostrich. The Shadowy armchair has a Seussian exaggerated profile with high back, curvy canopy, and eye-popping colorways like black and white or orange and yellow.

Thomas Heatherwick’s Spun chair, made by Magi for Herman Miller , looks like a giant child’s spin top.

Placed upright, it’s sculpture. Tipped on its side, it’s a playful, comfortable seat. Spun comes in black, white or red.

Loll Designs’ Rapson chair at Perigold is a futuristic plastic version of a traditional wing chair; it comes in a bunch of colours including leaf green, apple red and sunset orange.

Finally, for fans of a certain HBO series, Amedeo Designs’ Throne chair, available at Houzz.com , might be just the thing. Intricately carved and substantially sized, the piece is actually made of lightweight resin — the perfect place from which to have a commanding view of whatever the backyard games might be.

HARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — An avowed white supremacist who deliberately drove his car into a crowd of counterprotesters, killing a young woman and injuring dozens, apologized to his victims Friday before being sentenced to life in prison on federal hate crime charges.

James Alex Fields Jr., of Maumee, Ohio, had pleaded guilty in March to 29 of 30 hate crimes in connection with the 2017 attack that killed Heather Heyer and injured more than two dozen others.

Prosecutors and Fields’ lawyers agreed that federal sentencing guidelines called for a life sentence. But his attorneys asked U.S. District Judge Michael Urbanski to consider a sentence of “less than life,” hoping he would take into account Fields’ trou- JAMES ALEX FIELDS JR. bled childhood and mental health issues.

Just before Urbanski announced his sentence, the 22-year-old Fields, accompanied by one of his lawyers, walked to a podium in the courtroom and apologized.

“Every day I think about how things could have gone differently and how I regret my actions,” he said. “I’m sorry.”

His comments came after more than a dozen survivors of and witnesses to the attack delivered emotional testimony about the physical and psychological wounds they had received as a result of the events that day.

“You had a choice to leave Charlottesville, but you did not,” said Rosia Parker, a longtime civil rights activist in Charlottesville who said she was standing feet away from Heyer when Heyer was struck by Fields’ car.

“You could have done anything else but what you did,” Parker said, her voice breaking as she stared directly at Fields. “So, yeah, you deserve everything that you get.”

Fields appeared stoic and didn’t look at Parker or any of the victims as they spoke.

Heyer’s mother, Susan Bro, said she wanted Fields to spend his life in prison but also hoped he would get the medication he needed and that one day he would change his views and no longer support white supremacy.

“I hope he can heal someday and help others heal,” Bro said.

After the hearing, Bro said she did not believe Fields’ apology was sincere, but instead was a last-ditch attempt to get a lighter sentence.

Fields drove from his home in Maumee, Ohio, to attend the “Unite the Right” rally on Aug. 12, 2017, which drew hundreds of white nationalists to Charlottesville to protest the planned removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. Hundreds of counterprotesters showed up as well.

President Donald Trump sparked controversy when he blamed the violence at the rally on “both sides,” a statement that critics saw as a refusal to condemn racism.

“Hate crimes violate the most fundamental American values of freedom and human dignity,” Eric Dreiband, assistant attorney general for the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division, said at a news conference with federal prosecutors after Fields was sentenced.

“The bigotry and ideology of neo-Nazism, Nazism, white supremacy and the Ku Klux Klan are a disgrace to this country and illegal acts based on those should be eradicated from the United States,” Dreiband said.

Prosecutors said Fields had a long history of racist and anti-Semitic behaviour and had shown no remorse for his crimes. They said he is an avowed white supremacist, admired Adolf Hitler and even kept a picture of the Nazi leader on his bedside table.

During the sentencing hearing Friday, FBI Special Agent Wade Douthit said a classmate described Fields as being “like a kid at Disney World” during a high school trip to the Dachau concentration camp in Germany.

Like old pals, Trump, Putin make light of election meddling OSAKA, Japan — Smiling together on a global stage, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin cheerfully dismissed Russian interference in U.S. elections, shared their contempt for the world’s news media and generally flaunted their personal bond on Friday.

That was one day after the Russian leader praised the president of the United States for his nationalist world views and vigorously declared the days of the West’s liberals are dying if not already dead.

For some time, Trump has defied the once-entrenched Republican distrust if not outright hatred of the powerful nation at the heart of the former Soviet Union. But Friday’s joint appearance seemed to go even further.

As the two leaders sat down for their first meeting in nearly a year, a reporter asked Trump if he would warn Putin not to meddle in America’s upcoming 2020 election.

“Of course,” the president replied. Then he turned to Putin and facetiously said, “Don’t meddle in the election.” He playfully repeated the request while pointing at Putin, who laughed.

The exchange at the Group of 20 summit in Osaka echoed one of the defining moments of Trump’s presidency from a year ago in Helsinki, Finland.

There, Trump pointedly did not admonish Putin about election interference and did not side with U.S. intelligence agencies over his Russian counterpart.

Putin disputes special counsel Robert Mueller’s conclusion that Russia interfered in the 2016 U.S. election to help Trump win. Putin told the Financial Times this week that it was “mythical interference.”

“What happened in reality? Mr. Trump looked into his opponents’ attitude to him and saw changes in American society and he took advantage of this,” Putin told the newspaper.

Putin, who has highlighted populist movements in Europe and America, praised Trump for trying to stem the flow of migrants and drugs from Mexico and expressed a view that liberalism — the main political ideology in the West since the end of World War II — has outlived its days.

“This liberal idea presupposes that nothing needs to be done — that migrants can kill, plunder and rape with impunity because their rights as migrants have to be protected,” Putin said, playing into issues Trump is emphasizing in his re-election campaign.

“The liberal idea has become obsolete,” he said.

The two leaders also bonded Friday over their mutual disdain for “fake news.”

Trump eyed the reporters at a photo opportunity with the Russian leader and told him, “Get rid of them, fake news. You don’t have the problem in Russia. We have it; you don’t have it.”

Putin responded, “Yes, yes, we have it. The same.”

The two men shared a laugh at that before sitting down for their first face-to-face discussion since the Mueller report was issued in April. The special counsel concluded that Moscow extensively interfered in the 2016 presidential campaign but said he could not establish a criminal conspiracy between Russia and the Trump campaign.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized Trump for kidding around about election meddling. He said the joke is on America and “Putin’s the only one laughing.”

“President Trump is basically giving Putin a green light to interfere in 2020,” Schumer tweeted.

Former President Jimmy Carter had even harsher words. The Democrat said he believed Russian interference put Trump into the White House, though he didn’t elaborate.

ASHINGTON — Adding a high-stakes immigration case to its election-year agenda, the Supreme Court said Friday it will decide whether President Donald Trump can terminate an Obama-era program shielding young migrants from deportation.

The justices’ order sets up legal arguments for late fall or early winter, with a decision likely by June 2020 as Trump campaigns for re-election. The president ordered an end to the program known as DACA in 2017, sparking protests and a congressional effort to salvage it.

That effort failed, but federal courts in California, New York, Virginia and Washington, D.C., have blocked him from ending it immediately. A federal judge in Texas has declared the program is illegal, but refused to order it halted .

The program — Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals — protects about 700,000 people, known as dreamers, who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children or came with families that overstayed visas.

The DACA protections seem certain to remain in effect at least until the high court issues its decision.

The administration had asked the court to take up and decide the appeals by the end of this month.

The justices declined to do so and held on to the appeals for nearly five months with no action and no explanation. The court did nothing Friday to clear up the reasons for the long delay, although immigration experts have speculated that the court could have been waiting for other appellate rulings, legislation in Congress that would have put the program on a surer footing or additional admin-

istration action.

Since entering the White House, Trump has intermittently expressed a willingness to create a pathway to citizenship for the hundreds of thousands of immigrants who’ve been protected by DACA. But he’s coupled it with demands to tighten legal immigration and to build his long wall along the Mexican border — conditions that Democrats have largely rejected.

With the 2020 presidential and congressional election seasons underway or rapidly approaching, it seems unlikely that either party would be willing to compromise on immigration , a touchstone for both parties’ base voters. Three decades of Washington gridlock over the issue underscore how fraught it has been for lawmakers, and there’s little reason to think a deal is at hand.

On the campaign trail, nearly all of the two dozen Democratic presidential candidates have pledged to work with Congress to provide a pathway to citizenship for millions of people in the country illegally — beginning with the dreamers. On the other hand, Trump sees his hardline immigration policies as a winning campaign issue that can energize his supporters.

“We are pleased the Supreme Court agreed that this issue needs resolution. We look forward to presenting our case before the court,” Justice Department spokesman Alexei Woltornist said.

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said in a conference call with reporters that the high court’s ruling Thursday barring, for now, a citizenship question on the 2020 census “demonstrates that the court’s not going to be fooled by the Trump administration’s clearly disingenuous efforts when it comes to trying to undo and backslide on a lot of the laws and regulations that are there to protect our health and our welfare.”

Friendship being ruined by insecurity

D

ear Annie: I have a friend who I have known for many years, and suddenly I have noticed that she is getting possessive with me. She just wants to see me alone, and she questions whether or not I’m seeing other friends when I can’t see her at a certain time. She makes comments about how popular I am and makes sarcastic comments about friends liking me Annie better.

I know she is insecure, but this Lane subject is difficult to approach with her.

She says that’s the way she is, and that’s that. She has friends but seems to depend on me a lot. I’m at my wit’s end. How should I handle this? – Torn and Frustrated Dear Torn and Frustrated: A friend is someone who wishes you well – someone who wants to see you grow and is there for you during the good times and bad. The “friend” described in your letter is missing those qualities. In fact, she sounds like someone who does not want to see you shine or to be popular, so she can keep you all to herself.

She is obviously very insecure. But the real ques-

tion is whether you should allow her insecurity and jealousy to weigh you down. Have a forthright conversation with her about how you feel. Tell her in no uncertain terms that you are allowed to have other friends besides her, though that doesn’t mean that you like her any less. In fact, you will probably like and respect her more as a friend if she gives you freedom.

It does sound like you care about her, so remember to come from a place of love and compassion when you approach her. If she becomes defensive, perhaps now is the time to give her space. Instead, tell her that when she is ready to not be so possessive and jealous, you will be ready to be her friend.

Dear Readers: A great number of you wrote in about the possibility of a medical condition, particularly sleep apnea, as a reason for intense snoring.

Dear Annie: I am responding to “Restless Nights,” regarding her mom’s snoring. I, too, snored very loudly, and my family made many remarks about it. I had a sleep study done and have been diagnosed with sleep apnea. I now use a CPAP machine, and I no longer snore. I also didn’t realize how little sleep I was getting before I got my machine. “Restless Nights” should encourage her

mom to talk to her doctor to see if she needs to have a sleep study done. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done for myself. – No More Restless Nights Dear Annie: Believe me, a snoring roommate can put a real crimp in a vacation. Years ago, a former vacation roommate wrote to tell me she’d discovered she had sleep apnea. She apologized for not knowing how disruptive her snoring was to others.

Treatment was important for her because apnea can harm physical health.

When I was young, I did not have sleep apnea.

However, a few years ago I was having sleep issues and was diagnosed with sleep apnea. The newest CPAP machines that are used to treat sleep apnea are so quiet that peaceful sleep is possible for all who share a bedroom. – Peaceful Sleeper Dear Annie: I read your response to “Restless Nights” and totally agree with your advice regarding the writer’s guilt issues. I was surprised, however, that you failed to mention the strong possibility that the mom’s snoring could be related to sleep apnea, which, in some cases, can have serious side effects. Toronto-raised actor-musician Kiefer Sutherland says it wasn’t his intention to stir the political pot with a recent tweet directed at Ontario Premier Doug Ford.

In early June the Golden Globe-winning “24” and “Designated Survivor” star put out a post on his verified Twitter account asking Ford to stop using his late grandfather Tommy Douglas’s name as part of his “political agenda.”

Sutherland was reacting to a tweet from Ford that linked to an op-ed by cabinet minister Lisa MacLeod, in which she compared the fiscal policies of the Conservative government to that of Douglas, who was Saskatchewan premier from 1944 to 1961.

“I’m not as familiar with social media as maybe I should be and I didn’t mean for it to become the thing it did,” Sutherland said Friday in a phone interview while on tour for his new album “Reckless & Me,” which will see him perform in several Canadian cities starting July 4 in Winnipeg.

“My comment was not about policy.... He has every right to have his policies and he’s elected because a majority of the people agreed with those policies. What I didn’t like and what I took objection to was that his policies do not reflect my grandfather’s political ideology, and his legacy is very important to me and to my family.”

Douglas was also known as the founder of medicare and the father of Sutherland’s mother, Canadian actress Shirley Douglas, who was once married to Donald Sutherland.

In his tweet, Ford wrote: “It’s time to make government work for the people again — not the other way around. I think Tommy Douglas would approve.”

Sutherland’s tweet response, addressed to “Mr. Ford,” said he found the comparison of their policies “offensive.”

Animal rescue group needs discarded bras for injured turtles INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. — A North Carolina animal rescue group is appealing to women not to throw out their old bras, but instead to send them to their agency to help turtles with broken shells.

News outlets report Carolina Waterfowl Rescue is asking women through social media to remove the eye closures from the fasteners and mail them in. Rescue group worker Keenan Freitas says the eye closures basically help wire the turtle shell back together.

The non-profit has been seeing as many as 40 turtles a week during the past month. It says many of them have been run over by cars, lawnmowers and boats.

EW YORK — Thousands of people converged Friday on the Stonewall Inn for the 50th anniversary of the rebellion that catalyzed a movement for LGBTQ liberation, marking the milestone with celebrity performances, speeches and personal reflections.

People from New York and afar came to take photos and share in the legacy of the gay bar where patrons resisted a police raid, sparking protests and longer-term organizing that made the cause considerably more visible.

“Fifty years ago, people stood up for their rights, and look where we’re at now. We’ve got flags all over the city,” said Richard Walker, 58, an airline worker from New York. “I’m getting goosebumps just really thinking about it.”

With the modern incarnation of the Stonewall Inn as the focal point, the day’s celebrations included music, speeches and an evening rally. Lady Gaga, Whoopi Goldberg, Alicia Keys, drag performers and other artists at

the advocacy organization Pride Live’s Stonewall Day Concert addressed a crowd that stretched for blocks on a nearly 90-degree afternoon.

“This community has fought and continued to fight a war of acceptance, a war of tolerance,” Lady Gaga said. “You are the definition of courage.”

Robert Beaird travelled from Dallas to attend the Stonewall anniversary events a couple of years after coming out in his 50s.

“I just kind of hid who I was for my whole life, and then within the last two years, I’ve been going through this kind of cathartic experience of accepting myself,” said Beaird, 53, who had been married and fathered children.

“Just to be here with all these people is pretty amazing.”

Jocelyn Burrell isn’t gay, but she made her way to the Stonewall Inn because she was struck by how welcoming it was when she stopped in there years ago, and she feels a sense of common cause with its place in history.

“Just like we fought — black people fought — for civil rights, I feel I should support other people who fight for civil rights,” she said. Friday’s events were kicking off a big weekend of Pride

festivities in New York and elsewhere. In New York, Sunday’s huge WorldPride parade — and an alternative march intended as a less corporate commemoration of Stonewall — also will swing past the bar.

Cities around the world began celebrating Pride on Friday. Participants in a march in the Philippines went by the presidential palace in Manila, waving placards as they marked the 25th year since the first such gathering.

The Stonewall Inn is now a landmark and part of the Stonewall National Monument, but in 1969, it was part of a gay scene that was known, yet not open. At the time, showing same-sex affection or dressing in a way deemed gender-inappropriate could get people arrested, and bars had lost liquor licenses for serving LGBTQ customers.

The police raid on the bar began early the morning of June 28, 1969. The nightspot was unlicensed, and the officers had been assigned to stop any illegal alcohol sales.

Patrons and people who converged on the bar on Christopher Street resisted , hurling objects and at points scuffling with the officers.

EW YORK — Shares of The RealReal jumped on their first day of trading Friday, as the secondhand-fashion online retailer tests investors’ appetite for the staying power of online marketplaces for preowned discounted Gucci and other luxury goods.

The San Francisco company, founded in 2011

by CEO Julie Wainwright, debuted on the Nasdaq Stock Market and is listed under the ticker “REAL.” Late Thursday, the initial public offering of 15 million shares was priced at $20 a share, above an expected range of $17 to $19 a share. That would raise $300 million before expenses.

The stock surged 44.5 %, closing the day at $28.90.

The RealReal says it’s the world’s largest online marketplace for authenticated, consigned luxury goods. Its total revenue was $207.4 million last year, up 55% compared with 2017. As of the end of March, it offered more than 620,000 unique authenticated pre-owned luxury items bearing the brands of more than 5,500 luxury and top designers.

But it hasn’t made a profit and its losses widened to nearly $76 million last year, up from $42 million in the previous year, according to its prospectus filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The move to go public comes as online marketplaces that sell used clothing and other items are flourishing as a new generation of younger shoppers don’t want to pay full price. They also are more conscious about the environment.

While shoppers for years have been buying and selling used discounted designer items at thrift shops and on eBay, this latest generation of secondhand online retailers make the shopping experience easier, with new technology and services.

Poshmark, an online retailer of secondhand clothing, expanded earlier this month into home decor with items including bedding and bath. Online rival ThredUP is opening physical stores.

Meanwhile, Neiman Marcus in April bought a minority stake in resale site Fashionphile. As part of this deal, at select Neiman Marcus stores, customers are able to not only receive an immediate quote for their items from Fashionphile but also payments they can spend immediately on new luxury items at the store. Neiman Marcus says it will not be selling any preowned merchandise at its stores.

The RealReal Inc. offers a “white glove” service where consignors, those who are selling their used designer goods, make an appointment with one of its luxury managers and receives a complimentary consultation at their home. It also operates 11 luxury consignment offices in key cities like New York and Los Angeles. It also operates three stores — two in New York and one in Los Angeles.

The RealReal says it has been able to build trust among its customers. It says it employs more than 100 gemologists, horologists, brand experts and art curators and says that its authenticators are highly trained, experienced experts in their respective fields. The company says that as buyers become consignors and vice versa, it creates a “unique flywheel that further accelerates our momentum.”

Through March 31, 53% of its consignors are buyers and 13% of its buyers are consignors, according to the prospectus.

“The sustainability of this model is going to hinge on their ability to do two key factors,” said Alex Fitzgerald, manager in the consumer and retail practice of global consultancy A.T. Kearney.
