On Monday, students in the school’s Division 18 painted the half dozen paper mache dinosaurs for a special “expedition” for younger students in the school’s outdoor forest classroom on Tuesday. Kindergarten and Grade 1 students explored the forest, searching for the creatures, learning about them as they went along. urrey Mayor Doug McCallum announced Tuesday night at a business meeting in South Surrey that the RCMP has announced it is unionizing.

“It’s not a done deal yet,” Sergeant Marie Damian, from RCMP national headquarters in Ottawa, told the Now-Leader on Wednesday. “We’re waiting to see which group will represent us.

“Definitely we will get unionized, and that’s because of Bill C-7. Bill C-7 gives us the right to have a union,” she said.

The bill received Royal Assent in 2017.

“We won the right, by the Bill C-7,” Damian said. “I don’t know when, but we will get unionized.”

The idea for a contest began back in October, said Clayton Heights Secondary principal Bal Ranu.

The contest, he said, initially intended to stay within the high schools but he was “so happy” elementary student became involved.

Ranu said a school board trustee was upset with all the vaping going on at schools and asked what principals were doing to fix the problem.

Ranu said initially, staff was suspending students.

“We were suspending five kids a day.”

With the idea of a contest in mind, Ranu said, staff began working with Fraser Health, which gave resources and the criteria for the posters.

Out with a roar with painted dinos at school Cambridge Elementary’s Division 18 didn’t spend the last week of school winding down, but rather went out with a roar, painting a half dozen paper-mache dinosaurs for a special “expedition” in the school’s outdoor forest classroom.

Along with their teacher, the Grade 3 students spent Monday painting dinosaurs crafted by one student’s father. “I’m always painting, and our glue guns are going all the time,” said the teacher, Ms. Vogstad. “So we helped but it was Spencer’s dad who did the most.”

And they researched the animals, of course.

“I think in Division 18 we have about three dinosaur experts,” Vogstad chuckled. “Sometimes people think the last week of school, things are slowing down, but no, no, no, we are still engaged.”

Kim Laing – wife of Robert Laing, who did “a lot of the heavy lifting” in creating the dinosaurs – said it was a “10-hour odyssey of painting” at the school on Monday. “And the kids were encouraged to be fanciful with their painting,” Kim added.

And fanciful they were. The end result was six colourful dinosaurs, each with realistically-shaped teeth and descriptions of each animal on a board.

Most people would never guess that Manpreet Braich is a burn survivor – that there was a day when doctors weren’t sure she would ever see with her left eye again.

Fast-forward six years, and the Surrey woman is sharing her story and journey of recovery to help promote a fundraiser that benefits other survivors.

“Unless you know my story, people have no idea that I have been in a burn accident,” Braich said.

Braich was 23 when she suffered severe burns to her neck, face and chest on Mother’s Day 2013, after a pressure cooker she was using to cook potatoes for a family barbecue exploded, sending boiling water at her face and a boiling-hot potato at her chest.

It was “similar to a bomb going off,” Braich said by email. “Luckily, I was able to move in time for the lid to hit only the roof and miss my face.”

In shock, Braich remembers running to her room with the thought of “changing my wet shirt,” and how her skin stuck to it. Her family followed, calling 911.

“Next thing we know I am being injected with morphine and on a stretcher,” she said.

Braich remembers waking up at Surrey Memorial Hospital, heavily medicated and only able to open one eye. She has no recollection of being transferred to the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn, Plastic and High Acuity Unit at Vancouver General Hospital, where she was diagnosed with second-degree burns

“My hair had fallen out from the front of my face and my entire face was a charcoal color from the injury,” Braich explained.

Where the potato had stuck to her chest, Braich had third-degree burns.

“I was young, scared and completely devastated,” she said.

After the skin showed no signs of recovering on its own, Braich was scheduled for a skin graft; a procedure that presented her with a difficult decision – where to take the skin from: her upper thigh or the back of her scalp. The former would leave a visible scar, the latter would mean a harder recovery period.

“Having to face this decision at (age) 23, it was really difficult for me – it was the worst thing that could have happened to me,” she said. “The day of the surgery, I changed my mind and decided to go with the

invisible scar.”

While her physical scars have healed well, Braich said the recovery period was “very difficult.” She had to sleep sitting up, at an angle that wouldn’t cause her skin to stretch too much. Her family members took turns holding her head up.

The pain, she said, was both mental and physical, and she joined the Burn Fund survivors group for support.

“It’s hard to put into words just how difficult life felt at the time,” she said.

Braich said she is “so grateful” for all the people who were by her side.

Volunteering regularly for Burn Fund events, including the annual Bright Nights event in Vancouver’s Stanley Park, is one way she gives back.

This year, she’s also speaking up for the annual Hometown Heroes Lottery, and hopes her story

“reaches out to those in my community and we can come together and help such a great cause.”

Proceeds from the lottery support burn survivors across the province, helping fund specialized adult health services and research, as well as Burn Fund programs, including an annual camp for young burn survivors.

Tickets can be purchased at heroeslottery.com, or at the grand-prize show homes in Surrey and Abbotsford, between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily.

The grand-prize winner will get their pick of nine prize-home packages, including one in South Surrey, at 1912 Laronde Dr. There is also a cash option of $2.1 million. In all, up for grabs are 3,169 prizes worth a total of $3.4 million.

The final ticket deadline is July 11. The cost is $75 for a three-pack, $100 for six tickets and $275 for 20 tickets.

A 50/50 is also being held, offering a jackpot of up to $2,220,000. Tickets are two for $15, six for $30 and 20 for $60. And, 209 prizes will be awarded in the Daily Cash Plus Game.

Those tickets are two for $25, or six for $50.

hat started out as a “normal” Monday for Attila Szalay would prove to be anything but when the Surrey Mountie unknowingly stumbled across – and caught – an armed homicide suspect inside Peace Arch Hospital. The man had just hopped the U.S. border in his attempts to flee police.

“It was like a scene out of a movie,” the constable said of the drama on Jan. 28, which involved using his phone to Google the suspect’s mugshot – only to discover he’d made eye contact with the man 30 minutes earlier, later walking back into the emergency room to see him a second time, and eventually a foot chase through the hospital to subdue the wanted man.

“It was definitely the craziest thing I’ve dealt with in my life, for sure,” he said.

Black Press Media ran a story on the incident at the time, with Corporal Elenore Sturko highlighting the fact that “within 30 minutes of the dispatch,” the suspect was in custody.

Szalay was among 376 people recognized – some RCMP members, some civilians – by Surrey’s top cop, Assistant Commissioner Dwayne McDonald, during the annual Officer in Charge Awards on Friday, June 21.

The awards are meant to recognize “outstanding contributions made to public safety in Surrey by police officers, employees, community partners, and civilians.”

For Szalay, the action began when he was responding to an unrelated motor vehicle incident in the middle of the day. He was at the hospital waiting to see if the driver of the vehicle was going to survive.

“So as I was there, sitting there listening to my radio, I had my earpiece in, our dispatch broadcasted over the air, ‘Just a heads up to all the Surrey units, U.S. police has called and told us they’ve recovered a stolen vehicle just south of the border, just south of Peace Arch Park on the U.S. side. And that stolen vehicle is associated to a homicide suspect out of Puyallup.’”

But the suspect kept running.

“I’m like, ‘Oh no, this is bad.’ It’s getting deeper into the hospital. So I’m running after him and I used a few choice words with him that I’m not going to repeat here, but very strong language to convince him to stop. He drops. Drops to the ground a few seconds later and surrenders.”

After pinning him down, popping handcuffs on him, he asked where the gun was. The man said it was in his waistband.

After witnessing a man “floor it” and hit the elderly women, Sahota said she was in the “fetal position” and wasn’t moving. He recalled feeling compelled to follow him and thought “he’s not getting away.”

The couple followed him down Fraser Highway, along 168th Street, then up 80th Avenue toward 176th Street, then back onto Fraser Highway. “There was a bus stop and a side street, and he turned in there and he stopped. So I stopped in the bus stop. At the same time we’re on the phone with RCMP, telling them step by step where we are. Within minutes I saw a police car show up.”

Sahota said the couple was “traumatized by what had happened” and said it’s still tough to go past the intersection today. Given the opportunity, Sahota said he’d do it all over again.

Surrey RCMP Constable Vanessa Puszka, who was a lead investigator in the file, nominated the Sahotas for their efforts, noting it’s “something that not everybody does.”

She said it was “integral” in locating the suspect “in a timely manner so certain charges could be investigated, or criminal offences could be investigated.

“Specifically the impaired operation which is quite timely, and you need to gather information in a timely manner,” she said, “so that was really important to be able to have no gaps in timeline. In this case we were able to place the driver behind the steering wheel which was really integral.”

While she said police “don’t recommend” following suspects, she said that what the Sahotas were able to do “really helped secure that investigation so we could provide a complete package and recommend charges and ultimately that person did plead guilty and other charges were laid as well.”

McDonald said it is “important to pause and recognize the contributions our officers and staff make, as well as the civilians who lend a hand when someone is in trouble.

Much of the work being recognized goes largely unnoticed, but it is ultimately these efforts that keep our communities safe. I am very proud of all of this year’s award recipients and grateful for their service, bravery and commitment to community.”

Make safety a summer must

S

ummer is upon us, and with all the fun and adventure that comes with it, there’s also the potential for danger.

For example, we typically see a spike in young children falling from second-storey windows that have been left open to let in fresh air, and are made accessible to tots by furniture pushed up against window sills. The fixes in this case are obvious, and yet youngsters still fall.

Surrey Mounties have issued safety tips for parents to consider. If you have children, you might want to pin this editorial on your fridge.

Some tips venture into the inherently obvious, but nevertheless need to be heeded. Like the one concerning imitation guns.

Gone are the days when kids can carry their Daisy BB gun down the street without potentially drawing what will be a certainly scary police response, at best.

Many pellet guns sold today resemble real-deal assault rifles.

We shouldn’t have to say this but, please don’t let your child wander around with one of these. Just, don’t.

Police also warn parents not to assume their children aren’t using drugs, and to keep ever vigilant on what junior is up to, particularly concerning the toll horrendously dangerous drugs like fentanyl or carfentanyl have taken on society. Some mistakes in life don’t afford second chances.

Online safety, like the subject

matter of other tips, is a yearround concern. Cyberbullying, sexting and luring are some of the many dangers that confront children using social media these days. Again, know what your children are up to.

In general, know where your children are going, and with whom. And if you’re enjoying a public event with them, set a meeting place beforehand in case someone gets lost.

A salute to retiring fire chief’s exemplary career in Surrey Frankly Speaking Frank Bucholtz

Len Garis is retiring at the end of this month after 18 years as Surrey’s fire chief.

He has done an exemplary job in heading up the team of first responders whose roles have changed greatly during his years at the helm of the department.

Firefighters used to be called to fires (naturally) and other challenging situations such as car crashes, natural disasters and medical distress. Now, they are called to all of those, but also to try to help people

who have overdosed on drugs – on the streets or in their homes.

Under Garis’ leadership, Surrey Fire Department has developed a number of innovative approaches to this pressing societal issue, and a variety of other complex issues.

This has been the underlying theme during his years heading the department – “How can we deal with these issues in a more innovative and creative way, while at the same time taking the best possible care of first responders?”

Early in his tenure, he was instrumental in helping track down and shut down homes used to grow marijuana.

Often, these homes had improper electrical installations which were a significant fire hazard. The nature

of the hydroponic growing also meant that many of these homes were damaged significantly by the production of the plants.

Marijuana has recently been legalized by the federal government, so eventually this issue should disappear. Many others will spring up in its place.

One of the more recent challenges has been the large number of overdose deaths in Surrey, throughout B.C. and across Canada.

Surrey Fire Department vehicles have been carrying naloxone kits and firefighters have kept many people alive because of their availability, particularly in places like the former homeless camp on 135A Street in the Whalley strip area.

limited success when people overdose at home. Often, it is too late by the time firefighters and other first responders are called.

This overdose problem has become a very significant challenge for firefighters, and it has taken an emotional toll on them as they see healthy young people succumb to drug overdoses. It is also a challenge for society as a whole. How do we deal with this issue?

Garis has been much more than a team leader and working fire chief.

He has been involved heavily in academic research, as an adjunct professor at the University of the Fraser Valley Centre for Public Safety and Criminal Justice Research.

His innovative leadership has positioned Surrey Fire Department as a leader among large fire departments, not only in B.C. and across Canada, but in many other parts of the world. Surrey has been very well-served by the fire department for many years, and his work has ensured that this high level of service and commitment – as well as a willingness to tackle new challenges head-on – continues.

The Editor, I was so taken by the help of two Surrey RCMP bicycle patrol officers, who took the time when I approached them recently with my situation. They did not hesitate to take the time to listen to me and help me. Their assistance was very much appreciated!

It was wonderful to see that both of them were getting their bicycles ready to go around the community and to touch base with people in the area. It was warming to know this, and I am sure the community appreciates this too.

I am not sure why the mayor is pushing for a new police force, when he can help enhance our Surrey RCMP. When I heard that the city’s survey concluded that nine out of 10 people wanted a new police force, I shook my head. It would seem that the survey had questions that directed people to the final answer the mayor had wanted to see.

This suggests the survey was skewed towards a new police force. In reality, I feel the majority of residents of Surrey want Surrey to keep the RCMP. Thank you, again, to the two officers who assisted me, and to all those who work exhaustively to help those who need help.

It cannot be easy doing your job while you have someone wanting you replaced at the same time.

Spend money on our city’s youth, not on canals The Editor, Re: “Canal isn’t Surrey’s first different idea,” the Now-Leader, June 19.

A message to our mayor Doug McCallum: Sir, have you completely “lost the plot,” as one can say? This most ludicrous, thoughtless idea has to top the cake.

Surrey still has issues with illegal dumping, so if you build a canal, guess where these items will be found next?

While I appreciate the changes taking place near my Whalley home, I would like to have the mayor’s focus on building infrastructure to support the city’s massive growth, especially by trying to do more for our youth so that they can find ways to entertain themselves, without having to resort to crime and violence as a way of letting off steam.

Now that would be money well spent.

Pettigrew attempted to ask a question at the outset of Monday night’s council meeting, but the mayor told Pettigrew he’d “have to wait,” telling him he was asking his question at the wrong time in the meeting. Council was in the section of the meeting in which they were adopting minutes.

“Actually, at this point of information, it just will take a moment and I do have the floor on this right now,” said Pettigrew.

“No, I’m sorry, we’re in adoption of the minutes,” replied the mayor.

Pettigrew, still standing, attempted to ask his question several more times as the mayor continued with the meeting.

“My question, as it is the discretion of the chair, I would like to know if members will be using the Roberts Rule of Order during council meetings,” said Pettigrew, referring to a guide for conducting meetings and making decisions as a group.

The mayor replied saying the rules “have been established by the city clerk and by councils, and have been the same as long as I’ve been

on council. So those are the rules that we follow.”

At that point, Pettigrew began to speak again, but he was cut off by the mayor.

“Councillor Pettigrew, you’ve made your motion. I am going to rule you out of order and please sit down or I will ask you to leave. You’re interrupting this council meeting.”

Pettigrew continued to challenge the mayor, asking what piece of legislation he was using to rule him out of order.

“This is your last warning, I’m going to ask you leave in a minute,” the mayor said.

“I’m asking what legislative piece: Are you using the Charter? Are you using council procedures? You’re not using Roberts Rules of Order. What are you using to rule me out of order?” Pettigrew asked.

His question went unanswered, and the back and forth continued.

Pettigrew conceded, after about six minutes from first standing up to ask his question, saying “I guess that would be a no.”

“So I guess I will not be

reading my questions, because obviously the mayor is not allowing me to do that.”

At the end of the hour-long meeting, the drama continued when Pettigrew again tried to speak.

The mayor once more told Pettigrew he was out of order.

“I have advised council that if anyone wants to do a notice or motion or other business, it’s very clear they are to come to the chairman first and talk to the chairman if they want that,” said the mayor.

At the same time, Pettigrew continued to challenge the mayor, asking staff if the city bylaw was being violated.

“Is this bylaw enforced or is it not?”

The meeting was then adjourned.

McCallum has not responded to a request for comment.

Asked if the city was undertaking a review of any potential violations, Surrey City Clerk Jennifer Ficocelli told the Now-Leader in an email Tuesday that “we are working to clarify the rules and processes that are in place.”

Police say that no one was hurt in the incident and that all vehicles involved had little to no damage.

A judge who awarded a former Surrey hotel manager $65,000 in damages after finding he’d been assaulted by the RCMP in Surrey reopened the case to adjust the award, after the Attorney General said it had not been given proper notice under the Constitutional Question Act governing Charter damages.

Justice Murray Blok, in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster, awarded Michael Kwok Shuen Fong $65,000 in damages – within that amount $2,000 for

Charter-related damages – for an unlawful arrest by the RCMP in Whalley on March 11, 2006.

Blok responded by setting aside the $2,000 for Charter damages.

“Given the modest sum involved, all parties sensibly agree that the situation might be remedied by vacating the award of Charter damages and instead increasing the award of non-pecuniary damages by the same amount,” he noted in his June 21, 2019 reasons for judgment. “I agreed that this was an appropriate, pragmatic solution and so I made an order to that effect upon the conclusion of

submissions.”

Fong alleged assault, battery, false arrest and false imprisonment and claimed he developed chronic pain and post-traumatic stress disorder as a result. He also argued his Charter rights had been breached and sought damages for that.

Fong had been the manager of Whalley’s Oasis Hotel. Before that, it had been called the Dell.

Council brings parking enforcement in-house

Surrey council voted Monday to bring parking enforcement inhouse, ending its existing contract due to “price escalations.”

“I believe it’s time that the City of Surrey resumes full control and responsibility for the city’s parking enforcement services,” said Mayor Doug McCallum in a press release Tuesday morning. “Not only will this move bring a cost savings to our ratepayers, but it will also provide for additional employment opportunities within the city. I fully endorse this move and I am glad that council has voted in support of it.”

The City of Surrey entered into a five-year contract with Paladin Security Group (formerly known as Concorde Security) in 2013 for parking enforcement services.

Surrey city council voted June 24 to bring parking enforcement in-house, ending its contract due to “price escalations.”

The annual cost for parking enforcement was $860,000 plus GST in the last contract year, but that is expected to rise to $915,150 for the 2019-20 year, “representing a 6.4 per cent increase,” staff note.

The report notes “in the previous contract year, the city generated $1.8 million in revenue from parking fines. Accordingly, the $860,000 annual cost of the parking enforcement contract was entirely offset by the annual revenue generated from parking fines and resulted in

a net surplus of $940,000.”

Bringing the work in-house would cost an estimated $660,000 to $805,000 “which is lower than the cost that the city is presently paying for these services.” According to a report to council, the move will require up to 11 staff, including seven to nine enforcement officers, one of whom would be a supervisor, as well as two clerks.

In addition to cost savings, staff say the “quality of work is more easily controlled through internal

resources” and the city can “more easily pivot its approach to service delivery based on priorities.”

And, parking enforcement staff “could be deployed to deal with other bylaw enforcement related matters.”

The city will now pay out the remainder of its parking enforcement contract with Paladin Security Group for work completed between April 1, 2018 to Sept. 30, 2019, totalling roughly $1.32 million.

The staff report notes the current Paladin parking enforcement officers primarily respond to parking complaints from the public, enforce the Highway and Traffic Bylaw and “proactively patrol” for any violations of the city regulations.

Those officers are also currently responsible for resolving customer complaints, gathering evidence and giving court testimony when applicable as well as maintenance of parking pay stations. They are active from 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week and “are supported by a call centre.”

The report notes that in the last contract year, the city received

16,151 parking enforcement requests, and states they are responded to on a priority basis.

That year, 60,501 parking violation notices were issued, it adds.

Also in the last contract year, 2,514 parking tickets were disputed, which equates to roughly four per cent, the report notes. Forty-eight of those were deemed invalid.

Meantime, staff are also recommending council review its contract for security guard services at City Hall, City Centre Library and the operations centre.

A contract for those services expired on Oct. 31, 2018 and since then, that work has continued on a “month-to-month” basis, staff note.

The cost for security guard services from November 1, 2018 to July 31, 2019 are projected to be $662,321 and staff recommend council terminate the monthto-month arrangement effective July 31.

In April the city initiated a market competition for a new security contractor. On July 8, staff expect to bring forward options for that contract.

The report notes the updates plan will incorporate Vision Zero principles and have “sufficient walking and cycling policies and objectives to replace the need for stand-alone modal plans.”

It will also introduce medium-range targets and an action plan set for 10 years and will act as a bridge “between today’s transportation system and a safer, multi-modal, low carbon and automated transportation future.”

The plan is to be updated in three phases.

Phase one is set to conclude in the fall and will include summarizing the city’s existing transportation programs and policy, capital spending categories and identifying new trends, such as electrification of the vehicle fleet.

Phase two, to being in later 2019 and conclude next spring, involves “developing hypothetical long-range scenarios for the future that complement the Regional Transportation Strategy long-range scenarios, but with a more detailed focus on outcomes for Surrey.”

If council gives staff the go-ahead, they will “develop and analyze a number of long-range rapid transit concepts using research and a data-led, evidence-based approach. The analysis will result in a recommended network concept. The recommended concept will include an overall rapid network and priorities for phased buildout. This network will be in addition to the 27 kilometres of rapid transit already outlined for Surrey in the Mayors’ 10Year Plan.”

City of Surrey staff are seeking council’s approval Monday to embark on a thorough update of its “long-range” transportation plan that is now 11 years old.

According to a report to council, the 2008 Transportation Strategic plan “requires updating to reflect the significant emerging trends in transportation, as well as to respond to changes in the City’s policies and transportation network.”

“New transportation infrastructure built since the 2008 Plan includes a new Port Mann Bridge and HOV lanes on Highway 1, South Fraser Perimeter Road, and a number of significant projects to come, including an expanded Massey Tunnel, new Pattullo Bridge, and a Surrey-Langley Skytrain line,” notes the report, penned by Jaime Boan, the city’s acting general manager of engineering. “Developing a new plan to reflect these changes is a top priority for the Engineering Department’s Transportation Division.”

Emerging trends to be addressed include “the shift to electric vehicles, micro-mobility such as electric scooters, car sharing, and connected and autonomous vehicles, as envisioned in the City’s Smart Cities Challenge bid,” Boan writes.

Other priorities are to be incorporated into the plan including the 2013 Community Energy and Emissions Plan, and the Vision Zero Surrey Safe Mobility Plan.

“Increasingly, cities will be in a position to own and manage the data that will be used by others to deliver multi-modal mobility options and create mobility-as-a-service platforms (apps that allow users to book and pay for a variety of mobility options, such as car share, e-bikes and ride hailing services),” Boan noted.

Ten outdoor concerts are on the Sounds of Summer calendar in Surrey, featuring a wide range of music at several of the city’s parks.

Admission is free at events in the annual series, planned by Surrey’s Partners in Parks program, and all performances are booked on select Wednesday evenings and Friday afternoons from July 3 to Aug. 21.

This year, the first concert features the jazz-electronica sounds of Caviar & Lace at Glades Garden Park on Wednesday, July 3, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The park is located at 561 172nd St., South Surrey.

Next up in the series are the vintage vocals of Beauty Shop Dolls, at the Museum of Surrey on Wednesday, July 10, followed by the classic-rock sounds of The A Team at Fleetwood Park on July 17.

The 20th anniversary of Surrey Pride will be celebrated Saturday (June 29) at Central City Plaza.

A Pride Party in the Plaza will run from 3 to 8 p.m. at 13450 102nd Ave., where the street will be closed to traffic.

Vendor booths, drag, lip sync, live music, spoken word and a kids/family zone are among attractions this year.

Kendall Ryan sure likes racing in Delta, judging by her recent results in the city.

The Ventura, California-based cyclist won all three of the Tour de Delta races last summer, and will look to repeat the feat when the event returns on the first weekend in July.

In the summer of 2018, Ryan’s success in Delta kicked off a run that saw her win five times and reach the podium six times during BC Superweek.

Held at sites around Metro Vancouver, the annual six-race series kicks off with Tour de Delta (from July 5 to 7) and ends with Tour de White Rock (July 13-14).

Now in its 19th year, the Tour de Delta event opens

Festival and criterium on Friday, July 5. That evening, on a rectangle-shaped route, cyclists will ride a 1.2-kilometre loop around the “social heart” of North Delta, with the start/finish line at 84th Avenue, west of 114th Street.

“Spectators will see the athletes pass by 70 times as they negotiate a course with a fast downhill section going into an open left-hand turn that will see the riders hit speeds of more than 70km/hr,” says a post at tourdedelta.ca.

“The finish of the race will also be exciting to watch as the athletes will only have less than 100 (metres) out of the final corner of the race to sprint to the line.”

She is predeceased by her father Kenneth and sister Becky.

A lifelong educator and community builder, Sue worked as a teacher and tutor, and more recently in community services and volunteer coordination for the City of Surrey. Together with Rob, they built a successful business providing pest control services across the Lower Mainland.

Our family will forever remember Sue’s generous spirit, steadfast support, and unwavering love for us all.
