Cranbrook and its surrounding area experienced quite a thunderstorm Wednesday night, but fortunately, unlike the dry summer thunderstorms, this one was accompanied by about 10 millimetres of rainfall, and no new wildfires were started anywhere close.

With Wednesdays’s rainfall, and taking into account the next few days before the month ends, June has a good chance of hitting or getting close to the average of 62 millimetres.

According to Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist, the spring season here in Cran-

brook — the months of March, April and May — saw 55 mm of precipitation. This is only 58 per cent of the average of 94. Last year we received 103.

“The rains we had here in June I’m sure are going to make the wildfire folks happy there,” Lundquist said.

The Kootenay-Columbia Conservative Party candidate is issuing a debate challenge to all federal candidates running in the fall election.

Rob Morrison, the Tory nominee for the riding, is asking for fellow candidates to participate in a series of debates across the Kootenay

region in a minimum of 12 communities.

As of press time, incumbent MP Wayne Stetski was unavailable for comment.

“I have spent the last two years traveling throughout our riding, meeting with folks and hearing their stories,” said Morrison.

A joint statement from a youth soccer association and a local BMX society is lauding a recent city council decision which pledged to cover costs to rebuild a track in Balment Park that may be affected by the construction of an indoor sports facility.

Council voted earlier this year to offer land at Balment Park to the Kootenay East Youth Soccer Association (KEYSA) for the indoor sports facility, however, concerns arose that the building footprint may infringe on an existing BMX track.

Summer Sounds returns

Let music fill the air, as Cranbrook’s Summer Saturday Heartbeat kicks off July 6 Submitted

ummer Dounds, Cranbrook’s outdoor, live music concert series in Rotary Park, runs simultaneously with the Dancing in the Park program each Saturday from July 6 to August 24, courtesy of the non-profit Fisher Peak Performing Artists Society (FPPAS) volunteers.

Regional performing artists, along with a few touring artists, will entertain from the Rotary Park bandstand starting at 6pm until 10pm completely free to the public.

“All our performers and technicians receive reasonable compensation and the rest of us volunteer our time and skills to contribute to the development of arts & culture in our community,” said James Neve, FPPAS President.

Funded primarily by the Columbia Basin Trust and other local corporate partners, the seasonal events have become an undeniable social hub for area citizens and visitors. The City of Cranbrook has added their support in recognition of the significant contribution the programs have made to the socio-economic and vibrancy of the city. A raffle will also be underway to help fund the programs with tickets sales at Rotary Park during the events. To add to the fun, attendees will have a chance to win an assortment of other prizes in a free draw every Saturday thanks to donations from local businesses.

Truly a great combination, the Kootenays are rich with diverse talent and Rotary Park is one of the best venues to relax and enjoy music in the warm summer weather.

The exceptional line up of

live entertainers is stacked with a variety of genres from folk to jazz, pop to classic rock and unique fusions. The dance component will be more defined and sometimes interactive featuring Tango, Zumba, clogging, belly dancing and presentations of other dance forms. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to bring their families and friends to the summer ‘heartbeat’ of the city.

Craft beer by the Fisher Peak Brewing Company will once again be for sale on site and several new food vendors will satisfy cravings. ust over two months ago, Cranbrook ’s newest cafe and bookstore opened its doors. Owned and operated by Candice Pickering and located at 16D 11th Avenue South, Kootenay Grounds, the 1,500 squarefoot space is warm and inviting, pairing Pickering’s love of fine coffee, baking and literature.

“It’s been going really good,” she said of the first couple of months of operation. “I have a steady flow of people coming through the door and everyone is happy to have another place to hang out and somewhere different.”

Last year Kimberley had an establishment with a similar model open its doors in the Platzl called Paper and Cup. “I definitely love the feel of the Paper and Cup in Kimberley and for years I always thought that books and coffee went really well together,” Pickering said.

Pickering is born and raised in Cranbrook. Right out of high school she attended Culinary School here at the College of the Rockies, doing three levels of culinary arts.

“The baking and all of the goodies are a big part of why I’m here, because I love baking.

We mostly use butter and flour,”

she adds with a laugh, “and everything’s from scratch — like grandmas’ recipes.”

Around 15 years ago she owned the Out to Lunch Cafe on 12th Avenue, then called the Moondance Cafe. She then became a mother, having three children and stayed at home with them for the past fourteen years.

After selling the Moondance Cafe she purchased the location of what would become Kootenay Grounds — the space had been vacant for about a year and she just decided that she should put something into it.

Pickering said that she is enjoying seeing all of the new busi-

nesses that have been popping up in and around downtown Cranbrook recently, and hopes that the trend towards revitalization continues.

“I think downtown is going to change,” she said. “I love to see more things going on, festivals in the park. Even from being over on 12th Ave 14 years ago until now the vibe is totally different downtown in the last decade, so I think there’s going to be lots of changes.”

Looking forward, the weather is looking favourable for the Canada Day long weekend.

Showers that persisted through Thursday will fizzle out and the temperature will gradually rise as the weekend begins, drying up

and climbing into the low 20s by Saturday, reaching mid to high 20s for Canada Day Sunday.

After that, Lundquist said it looks as though it will cool off again and we may get some more showers, but temperatures shouldn’t be as cool as they are now. Going forward, however, we may be in for another hot

and dry summer.

“It looks like there is a really high probability that the next two months of summer and the first month of fall, July August and September, will be warmer than average,” Lundquist said.

“We can’t talk about precipitation in the long run, it’s not really reliable.”

The Safer Sex Guide is published by the Canadian AIDS Treatment Information Exchange and provides tips on how to prevent sexually transmitted infections.

Explicit sex-ed guide for adults mistakenly given to Creston elementary students Jenneil Peters Creston Valley Advance

A number of parents were left baffled after a graphic sex education guide was mistakenly distributed to a Grade 6 and 7 health class at a Creston elementary school, sparking an apology from the school district for the awkward mishap.

Concerned parents voiced their anger at a Kootenay Lake school district meeting on Tuesday evening. The booklet, called The Safer Sex Guide is published by the Canadian AIDS Treatment Information Exchange and provides tips on how to prevent sexually transmitted infections.

The booklet clearly states online and inside that the guide contains sexually explicit information and is meant for mature audiences.

Terine Sandre, one of the parents who attended the meeting, told the Creston Valley Advance that she has since spoken to the president of CAITIE, who told her that the book was originally ordered by the local public hospital.

“He said if we would have known that that book was going near any elementary school, it would have been red flagged and never sent out to that hospital,” Sandre said.

In a letter to parents last Friday, principal Ken Wiens deemed the material to be inappropriate for the age group and apologized for not being more diligent in vetting the material beforehand.

“We will work together as a staff to ensure a similar incident does not happen in

the future,” he said. “We are sorry that we put your child in a place where they had access to this material.”

A letter from Interior Health public health nurse Kayla Benson the same day also confirmed that the resource had not been reviewed before providing it as a resource to students.

“This is a new resource that we did not review completely before providing it to Mrs. [Carmen] Murphy to use as a further resource for the students.” she said. “Upon review, it was evident that there was some explicit language and content used that may not be appropriate for this age group.”

At Tuesday’s meeting, the school board recognized parents were distraught by the Safer Sex Guide and explained to parents that the school board does not have control over the health authority or the public health nurse.

SD8 Supt. Christine Perkins agreed with the concerns of the parents.

“The material was written for adults, by adults, the graphics and language are clearly for the 19 plus age group,” Perkins said.

“Up to this event, we have had implicit trust in our partnership with our local health care providers; unfortunately, at this moment, that has been broken.”

Perkins said “We did receive an email in support of the program,” added Perkins. “Surprisingly, although the parents were kind of shocked that their conversation with their son was taking place earlier than

usual, they wanted the board to know that as parents they had 100 per cent confidence in teacher Murphy, and were not upset about the situation at all.

So there are diverse opinions.”

Perkins assured parents that in the future all documents being offered to students by a third party will be thoroughly reviewed by both principal and classroom teacher before being distributed.

School trustee Al Gribbin was unsuccessful in asking for a motion to ensure that the school board brought appropriate professionals in to help with the situation.

Velle Huscroft Weitman, another concerned parent said that isn’t enough, especially due to the guide’s tips on how to avoid contracting HIV through drug use and the fact that school is out for summer this week.

“Will a certified doctor, and RCMP officer speak with the children regarding the safe drug use techniques described in the book before school is out?,” she asked.

“The book does not say that drugs are harmful. It teaches how to snort coke safely without contracting an STI. Where is the counselling going to be provided? Is it not going to be able to be provided through the school. School is out in two days.”

Instead, board chair Lenoar Trenaman said that whatever counselling services possible within the school district would be available to students and parents if needed.

“We can’t change it,” Trenaman. “We can’t turn the clock back.”

KEYSA, BMX society praise council pledge

Continued from A1 While the city voted to cover the cost of the track reconstruction, it also accepted a $10,000 donation from KEYSA of cash or in-kind services to be used towards rebuilding the BMX course.

“The combined effort of KEYSA and the BMX Society working closely has brought the best outcome for all who use the existing facility and the new facility,” reads the statement. “KEYSA will now look to the Cranbrook BMX association for guidance on how the $10,000 contribution can be made most valuable. KEYSA is excited to be able to move this project forward while still meeting tight deadlines for the grant funding. KEYSA will continue to work closely with user groups, the BMX society and other organizations to be able to offer new opportunities within Balment and continue

in a spirt of cooperation and community interest.

Voices around the council table during Monday’s meeting were hopeful that grant funding opportunities could be pursued to cover some of the track reconstruction costs,— a figure that is still under debate.

“Cranbrook BMX is grateful to Cranbrook City council for clarifying and assuming the financial responsibilities required to rebuild the Cranbrook BMX track,” continues the statement. “The next step will be to work with KEYSA and the City to develop a construction sequence that will see both projects constructed in Fall 2019. This collaboration will be the most efficient way to complete both projects in a timely manner.”

As per a letter from KEYSA that was included in Monday’s city council agenda, the responsibility of costs relating

to the BMX track was one of the last outstanding issues in negotiations for a License of Occupation — a legal document that will permit the use of the parkspace for the indoor facility.

KEYSA has been fundraising for facility over the last two years and has secured roughly $1 million in donations and grants for construction that is set to being in the fall. It will be built, operated and maintained by the association at no cost to the taxpayer.

The facility itself is an air-supported dome that features 2,600 square metres of indoor heated floor space on artificial turf that can cater to a number of different sports besides soccer, such as baseball, lacrosse and football. Additional plans include using the space for trade shows, concerts and conventions.

than that and I am committed to participating in each of these debates. Time will tell if our current MP agrees with Conservatives on this.”

The Townsman has reached out to Wayne Stetski’s office for comment on the debate proposal.

Wesly Graham, Morrison’s campaign manager, proposes a committee comprised of a representative from each Kootenay-Columbia candidate campaign teams, according to a news release.

So far, Morrison (Conservative Party), Stetski (NDP) and Rick Stewart (People’s Party of Canada) are the only

confirmed nominees for their respective parties.

“Kootenay-Columbians will be looking to make an informed decision on Election Day and these debates will provide an important opportunity to discuss the current MP’s voting record, which requires some explaining,” continued Morrison. “By planning these events well in advance there will be no excuse for Mr. Stetski to miss a single debate.”

Stewart endorsed the proposal, and said his campaign has been in touch with Morrison’s team about coordinating the future debates.

B.C. Parks says number of visitors to Joffre Lakes has soared 168 per cent in the last nine years. Around 183,000 people visited the park last year, which works out out to an average of more than 500 people every day.

Apparently the hike up to the Park’s main attraction — three blue green lakes surrounded by glacier-clad mountains — is so popular now that you will never have a moment alone on the trails. The parking lots are always full and you will now be towed if you park on the highway.

Dogs have been banned and reservations for campsites are mandatory.

This does not sound like the camping I remember.

And it’s everywhere. We may have more space here in the Kootenays, but try even getting to the lakeshore at Premier Lake on a hot August day. Try getting a spot along the lake at Koocanusa without getting into fistfight because you’re on somebody’s pre-claimed territory.

I mean where do you have to go to get a little privacy, Mt. Everest? I kid. Mt. Everest is more crowded than Joffre Lake Provincial Park these days.

If you want to be alone for the long weekend, you’d be well advised to stay in town. The deer figured it out a long time ago. It’s nice and quiet in town. Everyone else is camping.

Eight reasons not to be a Christian, Part I

’ve had a few conversations recently with some folks who have asked me why they should bother being a Christian. They don’t see any sense in it at all and they wonder why I do. One even went so far as to say, “You’re reasonably intelligent; so why do you bother with this crap?”

Conversations like that stick in my mind. They are important signals of how people respond to Christian faith and to the church. It’s also true to say that this kind of attitude isn’t new at all. In Psalm 42, for example, we read, “As with a deadly wound in my body, my adversaries taunt me, while they say to me continually, ‘Where is your God?’” We find similar taunts in other Psalms and in the prophets. It

has always been difficult for people who have no faith to understand why some of us do have faith.

So I thought I’d have a little fun over these next few weeks.

I’ve come up with a list of eight (almost) tongue–in–cheek reasons why you shouldn’t bother with Christianity. Then, at the end, I’ll suggest one reason why I think you should.

Regular readers will know that Christian faith is a huge part of my life. But that doesn’t mean I haven’t struggled with it. I do understand how difficult it can be for us to explore our spirituality. I understand that sometimes we’re just not sure about it. If this describes you, then in my mind you’re a normal person. Welcome to the club! Faith is a big question,

I don’t want to manipulate you. I don’t want to disguise Christianity so that it’s somehow “easier” or more palatable.

I want to write as clearly as I can about what it means to me to be a Christian. I want to try to tell it like it is, both the good stuff and the difficult stuff.

So here we go. #1. The Church is full of

Seniors also squeezed by cost of living A few months ago, I wrote about millennials and how they are now “Generation Squeeze.” My office received quite a bit of feedback about that topic. Thank you to everyone who wrote to me to express their views. I have not forgotten about another group that is often finding it difficult to make ends meet: Seniors.

In May, I delivered a statement in the House of Commons about older adults in my riding facing financial challenges. This generation too has become “squeezed.”

For example, many seniors are providing financial help to their adult children or their grandchildren while trying to live on a fixed income.

Thanks to modern medicine and Canada’s social programs, Canadians are living longer, but pensions and other benefits have not kept up with the rising cost of living. Indeed, in Canada, 15 per cent of seniors currently live in poverty.

Some senior women, who may have stayed home to raise children or worked in the family business for little or no salary, have contributed little to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP). As a result, they are now faced with financial difficulties.

Though they may qualify for the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) top-up, the process takes time, and the resulting monthly benefits may fall short of what the individual actually needs. In response, the NDP has proposed not cutting off the GIS of seniors who are late filing their taxes.

Moreover, the party has also proposed a National Seniors’ Strategy committing the federal government to create a long-term action plan that would ensure seniors can maintain an adequate quality of life.

When it comes to good quality, affordable housing, seniors are finding the same difficulties as millennials: Rents are increasing at astronomical rates, and just like their younger counterparts who can’t find small starter homes,

seniors whose children may have left home are struggling to downsize to smaller homes in an overheated housing market.

In some cases, seniors who need smaller units or long-term care may be obliged to move from their longtime community to find housing. Such moves can result in added expense and sudden social isolation.

Compounding this is a lack of affordable, reliable inter-city transit options, especially now that Greyhound has left the region, and air travel options flying out of Cranbrook have been reduced. Seniors Wayne needing access to healthcare in Stetski larger communities may incur additional expenses as a result.

Canadian internet and cell phone prices are some of the highest in the world: Seniors need to stay connected both from a social point of view and for their safety, but the current telecom rates are making this necessity more and more of a luxury as seniors have to decide between paying for cell service or paying for housing and groceries.

Another aspect of the affordability crisis is the high cost of prescription medication: In retirement a senior may be paying out of pocket for necessary medications that were once covered by a private drug plan. Provincial programs may only provide patchwork coverage, depending on financial thresholds. This is one reason the NDP is calling for a national pharmacare program that would be another building block towards true universal health care in Canada.

As mentioned, the NDP has been calling on the government for a national seniors’ strategy that would address income, housing, and health considerations of our older generations. It is time that Canadians had a government that worked for them, that helped to improve all aspects of their daily life.

Yes it is. People of faith are hypocrites—myself included!

A hypocrite is “a person who pretends to be what he or she is not”. It comes originally from a Greek word which means “stage actor, pretender”.

Now let me ask you, have you ever pretended to be something you’re not? Have you ever suggested to another person that you are more virtuous than you actually are?

Here’s a truth about human beings—we all fall under the banner of being a hypocrite.

None of us—not a single one—ever matches our words with our actions perfectly. We all have ideals and standards which we will never be able to meet. But it is always important to hold those ideals in front of us. #2. The Church is morally compromised.

Okay, so it’s one thing to be a hypocrite. But it seems to go so much deeper in the church.

How can you possibly identify yourself with an institution which has done some terrible things? Among other things, what about the Crusades and the Inquisition? What about missionaries who spent as much time colonizing indig-

enous people (‘making them good subjects of European nations’) as they did preaching religion? What about residential schools? What about pedophile clergy? What about patriarchy and a lack of equality between the genders? This list could go on forever.

Again, you’re right. The church has a lot to answer for.

We can’t just brush those things off, even though we might like to. We have to tell the truth about our history. Honestly, we are embarrassed and ashamed of what we have done. We can’t sweep them under the carpet.

At the same time, as you dig more deeply into the history of the church, you will also discover that Christians have done some wonderful things. It’s not all one–sided. Christians started the first hospitals, the first orphanages, and many of the first schools. Christians pioneered the abolition of slavery and prison reform. Christians have served around the world to serve the sick, feed the hungry, visit the lonely. Even today, Christians are involved all over the world in working for literacy, relief and development, justice, and medical care.

ble things over its history, it is equally true that Christians have served the world and its citizens in ways that might not have happened otherwise.

The early church was known as a place of hope and help for the homeless and the poor.

In cities of the Roman Empire which were filled with newcomers and strangers, the church was a place of community. In cities filled with orphans and widows, the church provided a new and expanded sense of family. In a time when society was rigidly stratified, the church welcomed everyone— the poor, the different, the lowly. In cities which had to deal with epidemics, fires and earthquakes, the church offered effective nursing services.

The church came into being as followers of the one who gave us a new commandment, “to love one another”. The church, at it’s best, continue to seek to follow that command, even though we are flawed human beings who miss the mark more often than we hit it.

East Kootenay Track and Field wraps up The EKTFC has finished a successful season with many new faces

The East Kootenay Track and Field (EKTFC) season has come and gone, but it was nothing short of spectacular.

The club, which earlier in the year wasn’t sure they would be operating this season, saw many athletes improve on their skills.

“We had 20 registered BC Athletic members, and brand-new board members, brand-new coaches. We didn’t know how it was going to go, and it went better than expected. All the kids, they are very young but you have to start somewhere,” said Steven Royer, head coach, EKTFC. Kristina Rody, Randy Moody and Emma Murtagh all came to the club as assistant coaches, including mul-

tiple new board members.

“I’m really happy it went smoothly,” Royer said about the transition with new coaches and board members.

The club had athletes from eight years old to 66 years old take part throughout the year.

“Now that we have four coaches available we are able to cater to more people. The [previous year] they only had one coach and one assistant coach. This year we have four qualified coaches, which is really great to see. That means we can help more people,” said Royer.

Kara Renzie, 10, is one of the athletes in the EKTFC, she has been participating in track and field for two years and says she really likes it.

“I really like to do the long distance sprints, but there

are a few field events that I really like,” she explained.

“I was built for running, particularly long distance.

My favourite one is the 600m and the 800m because I’m good at pacing myself to do it.”

Having competed in multiple meets this year Renzie said the year went pretty well, and she has some track meets left to go. She likes competing in track and field events because she says it’s something she can do all year.

“I’ve had a passion for running for a while, and I figured that out when I started track,” she said.

This year members of the club participated at the West Kootenay Zone Royal Canadian Legion Outdoor Track Meet in Trail.

“We sent eight athletes, and they all broke meet records, they all came home with ribbons — top-three finishes. It was a really good experience for a lot of them.

They have never done it before and it gave them lots of happy smiles,” said Royer.

As for next year, Royer says he expects the club to continue to grow.

“Next year we are expecting over 30 athletes because it’s the summer games for the 14 and 15 year olds. So, we are really excited about next year. We will have a lot more members,” said Royer.

They are expected to start The East Kootenay Track and Field Club wrapped up their season, which they say was up in the first week of April very successful. The Cranbrook Bandits were in Montana this past weekend where both the senior and junior teams took part in tournaments.

The senior Bandits went 2-2 in the Big Bucks Baseball Tournament hosted in Libby, Montana.

On the first day of play, the Bandits defence was strong facing off against Sandpoint winning 10-0.

On June 22 they had a doubleheader, which they split.

First losing to the Bitterroot Bucs 5-1 and then rebounding to for a 10-1 win against Strathmore.

On their last day of play, the senior bandits went on to lose 14-1 against the Moscow Blue Devils.

The Bandits will continue on the road for a doubleheader against the Bitterroot Bucs on June 19 and then they will face-off against the Missoula Mavericks for another dou-

bleheader on June 30.

They will be back home on July 7 and 8.

The junior Bandits were down in Florence, Montana for their tournament where they had a 3-2 record.

of play on June 21 posting a 14-6 win against the Libby Loggers and the 12-9 win against the Bitterroot Bucs.

Three Kootenay students awarded legacy scholarship

The churches of Cranbrook got together for Sam Steele to have a service for about 400 people in the park. “As part of our offering we wanted to give to the Boys and Girls Club of Cranbrook,” said Rev. Jeff Crozier, “because we recognize they do an amazing service for our community and so we just wanted to gather the churches together and give towards that.” In total they raised $2,400 and presented it to the Boys and Girls Club on Tuesday, June 25. Three students from around the Kootenay region have received a scholarship awarded by the Columbia Basin Trust.

The Neil Muth Scholarship, which honours the legacy of Neil Muth, a former president and CEO of the organization who passed away in 2016, has been awarded to Tara Woods from Invermere, Makayli Wilkinson from Crawford Bay and Elizabeth Sutton from Cranbrook.

Each student will receive $3,000 that will go towards pursuing their post-secondary educational goals.

“We were amazed by the strength and courage of each and every applicant who shared their very personal and powerful story of perseverance through adversity,” said Cathy Muth, Neil’s wife.

“Tara, Elizabeth and Makayli demonstrate a continued positivity and a strength of believing in themselves and their dreams, no matter what they’ve had to face in life. They are truly inspiring, and we are so glad that we can support their efforts as they work towards realizing their educational and career goals.”

Sutton, who graduated from Mount Baker Secondary School this year in Cranbrook is hoping to pursue a career helping children.

She has been accepted into the College of the Rockies’ Pre-Education Certificate Program for her first year of undergraduate studies with the goal of completing a Bachelor of Education and eventually a Masters in counselling psychology.

“I am very grateful to be a recipient of the Neil Muth Memorial Scholarship this year,” Sutton said. “Without this scholarship, it is questionable whether I would have been able to afford to begin my post-secondary education,” says Elizabeth. “Now I can start working towards a career where I can be part of a supportive network for children. That is what helped me as a child and now I can help give back.”

Woods is currently completing the last two years of a Social Work undergraduate degree through distance learning at the University

“My hope for my future is to continue to work with vulnerable and marginalized youth and give back to Indigenous and LGBTQ2iA+ residents in my community,” Woods said. “This scholarship will allow me to finish my degree within two years.

I have been working towards this degree over the last several years and now I will have the opportunity to complete it sooner than expected. I am incredibly honoured and grateful that this scholarship is supporting me to continue to work towards my goals and to help others.”

Wilkinson will be heading to Olds College in Alberta this fall to enrol in the twoyear Equine Science Ptrogram, which will combine her passions of equine riding and assisting children and youth who face physical and emotional challenges. Her intrest in the program was sparked by her volunteerism with Creston’s Theraputic Riding Centre as a student at Crawford Bay Secondary.

She hopes to become a theraputic riding instructor.

“I’ve spent so much time doubting myself, but I have persevered and made it through. I am so happy to receive this scholarship,” she said. “It will allow me to pursue my life’s goal.”

The scholarship is awarded by the Muth family, administered by Columbia Basin Trust and made possible by the generous donations of family, friends, local governments and organizations.

Driving While Affected by Drugs or Alcohol

Driving while affected by alcohol or drugs is a leading cause of death on the roads. Every year in B.C., thousands of people operate a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and / or other drugs which affect their ability to drive. This is a serious concern because the risk of motor vehicle collisions that result in injuries and / or fatalities significantly increases when the driver is affected by alcohol or drugs.

Two Laws on Alcohol, Drugs and Driving Federal Law The Criminal Code (Part VIII.1) states it is a criminal offence to operate a motor vehicle (whether in motion or not) while impaired by alcohol, a drug or a combination of alcohol and a drug. This includes operating a motor vehicle with a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) equal to or exceeding 80 milligrams (mg) of alcohol in 100 millilitres (mL) of blood (0.08 BAC), or operating a motor vehicle with a blood drug concentration equal to or exceeding a prescribed value.

If police have reasonable grounds to believe a person is committing, or at any time within the preceding two hours has committed an impaired operation offence, they may request that the person provide a sample of breath or blood or may request that a person submit to an evaluation by a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) and provide a sample of a bodily substance. It is also an offence to fail or refuse to comply with a demand.

For criminal offences to become criminal convictions, under the Criminal Code, police need to lay charges and those charges need to be prosecuted through the court system. The consequences for convicted offenders are determined by judges and can include jail time, monetary penalties, driving prohibitions and / or restrictions.

Provincial Law The Motor Vehicle Act has authority over and regulates drivers and vehicles on B.C. roads. If an Approved Screening Device (ASD) indicates a driver, with care or control of a motor vehicle, has a BAC not less than 0.05 BAC they can be served with an Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP).

Indicators and Roadside Screening Devices

If an officer has reasonable suspicion that a driver may be affected by alcohol, or if an officer has in their possession an Approved Screening Device (ASD), they may, by demand, require a driver to provide a sample of breath on an ASD to determine a driver’s BAC. The ASD will indicate a digital BAC reading, a WARN or a FAIL Digital Reading of 0-.049 BAC Your blood alcohol level is below the “WARN” range.

You may still be subject to a 12-hour driving prohibition if you are in the Graduated Licensing Program and caught with any level of blood alcohol or a 24-hour driving prohibition.

WARN Your breath sample contains a BAC of not less than 0.05 BAC, the following consequences will occur: 1st time within five-year period Your driver’s licence is seized immediately, prohibiting you from driving for three days.

The vehicle you are driving may be impounded for three days; and if so, you are responsible for all towing and vehicle storage costs.

You are required to pay a $200 administrative penalty.

You have to apply to have your driver’s licence reinstated and pay the licence reinstatement fee as well as any other outstanding debts to ICBC or the Government of BC if you wish to drive again.

2nd time within five-year period Your driver’s licence is seized immediately, prohibiting you from driving for seven days.

The vehicle you are driving may be impounded for seven days; and if so, you are responsible Don’t risk your life or the life of someone else.

Please drive sober.

Onidas Chasse February 21, 1933 - June 14, 2019 Onidas Chasse, age 86, currently of Cranbrook and a former long time resident of Radium Hot Springs, passed away Friday June 14th, 2019 at East Kootenay Regional Hospital.

He was always a very generous and patient man.

Onidas is survived by his wife Marie, 7 children Jean-Pierre (Marie), Jacques (Shelley), Danielle (Keith), Marcel (Len), Gaston (Loreen), Christine (Ralph), Isabelle (Kelly); 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 1 brother, and 2 sisters.

PERRIN, Claudia Myrna Ruth November 2, 1939 - June 24, 2019 On peaceful loving wings, surrounded by her loving family Claudia left us at the age of 79, at the Cranbrook Regional Hospital, on June 24 ,2019.

Claudia “Hiya� as her great grandchildren loved to call her, was a warm, loving person, she had a great sense of humor.

A member of the Rebekah Lodge for over 50 years, and a lifetime member of the hospital Auxiliary. She spent many hours caring for neighbours and was always willing to help when needed.

Claudia is survived by her son Colin (Debbie) Perrin, granddaughter Vanessa Perrin, Daughter Myrna (Arthur) Dowe, granddaughter’s Crystal (Cheldon) Schwartz, Candice (Joel) Nielson, and Jennifer (Steve) Fenner. Great grandchildren Graham and Owen Schwartz, Aria, Ella and Everly Nielson.

She is predeceased by her husband Edson Perrin, son Clayton Perrin, Parents Jessie and John Turner, Brothers Darwin Turner and Douglas Turner.

There will be a Funeral Service at McPherson funeral Home on Wednesday July 3rd, 2019 at 10:00 am.

Kudos to EK performers at Provincial Festival Cranbrook set to host provincial performing arts festival in June, 2020

with Emma Toth, Olivia Shuflita and Ariel Stuart being nominated for provincials and Paisley Smith, Martina Loesch, Mikaela Garson, Kaylie Featherling, and Jada Heywood as merited participants As a festival EKPAF truly hit it out of the park! Each class has approximately 20-25 BC participants, so even being mentioned is a great honour.

Keanu Chan received first place in Junior Shakespeare and second place award in Junior Speech Arts.

Jack Spring scored big and came home with a 2nd place award in Classical Voice. Pyper Standing wowed the crowd and was awarded 2nd place in Junior Musical Theatre. Lauren Hehn played her way to the top with a first place win in Intermediate Canadian Piano Solo. This is the most provincial awards I have seen come from our small festival in the 8 years I’ve been volunteering on the board. Bravo children! We want to send a huge congratulations to those award winners, and also to all who were nominated for provincials.

This is a great prelude to BC Performing Arts coming to Cranbrook in June 2020!

at the East Kootenay Performing Arts Festival, are so proud of all the festival performers this year. We had over 100 each of piano and voice registrations, 50 speech arts registrations, over 30 strings registrations, and 2 days worth of dance performances. We were so very pleased with all the talent that was brought to us at our local festival earlier this year.

We were honored to have had many participants who were nominated to attend

provincials in Chilliwack both as participants and merited participants.

In piano the provincial nominees were Isabella Ferraro-Blomander, Lauren Hehn and Bailey Lehmann. The merited participants were Daniel Kim, Rafael Baillie, Jonathan Talbot, Phoebe Van Rensburg, Zoe Chong, Grace Cleland, Amanda Erickson, and Benjamin Miskulin.

From the voice genre the provincial nominees were Jack Spring, Mya Robinson, Pyper Standing and Eve MacBride. The mer-

ited participants were Lauren Wolff, Cassianna-Marie Goodine, Gabe Miller, Nataniah Ranjan, Issac Grasdal, Beth Gartside, Chenia Weng, Jonathan Wong, Ruth Wong, Hallie Miller, Sienna Longo, and Elizabeth Cartwright.

For speech arts we sent Keanu Chan as the provincial nominee with merited participants being Lilly Bettcher, Ruth Wong, and Charlee May Organ In strings our lone provincial nominee was Garron Stuart.
