Canada Day celebrations all set for Trail and Rossland SHERI REGNIER Trail Times

Looking for something to do in the Trail area on Canada Day? Monday, July 1, marks the country’s 152nd birthday, with celebrations starting bright and early at Kiwanis Beaver Creek Park.

Kiwanians will be flipping flapjacks and grilling sausages from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for $6 per plate, then serving up a $6 hamburger deluxe barbecue lunch, or hot dog, $3, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Proceeds go to local charities and nonprofit organizations from Rossland to Trail and the Beaver Valley.

Fun for all ages begins with community group displays, face painting and children’s games at 10 a.m.

The bus leaves the park and returns to downtown Trail via the designated pick up/drop off sites at 10:30 a.m., noon, 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Event organizers remind guests that dogs are not permitted in the Kiwanis park area.

Canada Day celebrations wind up with fireworks in Gyro Park at dusk.

For those looking for a day-out in Rossland, the city’s museum and discovery centre has a big afternoon planned from noon to 3 p.m.

For early risers, as is tradition, Canada Day

will begin with a hike up Mount Roberts at 8 a.m.

All welcome.

Family activities at the Rossland Museum and Discovery Centre grounds include gold panning, a trading post, an outdoor playground, yoga by The Nadi Tree and kid-friendly music by Jazzy Jo. Plenty of food vendors will be on site, and a sure-highlight will be the time period photo booth with costumes courtesy the Rossland Light Opera Players. Admission for festivities is by donation.

At 2:30 p.m., come together to sing “O Canada” with the Gold Fever Follies with remarks by Rossland Mayor Kathy Moore before tucking into Sweet Dreams Cakery cupcakes and Canada Day cake.

Finally, a fireworks show, weather permitting, will close out the day at dusk.

The BC Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB) will be holding a job fair in Trail to recruit prospective employees for its BC Cannabis Store, set to open later this year.

The job fair will be held on Thursday, July 11 from noon to 6 p.m. at the Best Western Plus Columbia River Hotel.

The Trail store will be located at #122 – 124 8100 3B Highway within the Waneta Plaza complex, and is expected to open

later this year.

The job fair will serve as an opportunity for prospective BC Cannabis Stores employees to speak to representatives from the LDB, which operates BC Cannabis Stores, and learn more about the positions available and experience required.

A series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names In their 1997 book, Rossland: The First 100 Years, Rosa Jordan and Derek Choukalos included a list of

the city’s subdivisions, although it’s not clear whether all the names were still in use at that time.

We’ve used their list as a starting point and added to it below.

At one time, a bridge across Centre Star Gulch on Second Avenue led directly to the Nickle Plate mine.

Happy Valley: Farming and dairying area on the city’s east side, which includes the old Columbia cemetery. The name was in use by the 1940s (and perhaps a lot earlier) and is perpetuated in Happy Valley Road.

Jordan and Choukalos write that the name was “possibly meant to describe the state of persons interred in [the] cemetery.”

Section Pond: Down a steep hill just beyond the junction of Highway 22 and the old Cascade highway, west of town. It was adjacent to the Red Mountain Railway roadbed and presumably took its name from a section house in the area.

Coronation Heights: The Rossland Miner of April 30, 1937 indicated this was then a new subdivision. It’s the southeastern-facing area just below the former Mater Misercordiae hospital. The name, which presumably referred to the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth that year, was still in use through at least the early 1950s, but has since fallen out of

Pinewood: This subdivision, built from the late 1940s through the 1960s, is south of Coronation Heights.

Its tree-themed streets are Pinewood Drive, Tamarack Avenue, Balsam Avenue, Fir Street, and Maple Crescent, plus an extension of Park Street.

Thompson Heights: Named for Thompson Avenue, in turn named for townsite founder Ross Thompson, this area also includes portions of Davis, Earl, Spokane, and Washington streets plus Union, Victoria, Phoenix, and Princess avenues.

An early mention in the Vancouver Province of Nov. 11, 1928 noted that “Mr. and Mrs. P. Taylor entertained about 25 friends … at their new residence on Thomp-

son Heights.”

Planer Hill/McDonald: Planer Hill includes Planer Crescent, portions of Second through Fifth Avenues, and is bounded on the east

by Spokane Street.

The name recalls a large lumber mill in the area.

Jackie Drysdale says when she was on city council in the 1980s, the McDonald Subdivision was created in the area as a development permit area with heritage design guidelines.

“Central to this area is the West Kootenay Power and Light substation and manager’s home and about ten new lots,” Drysdale says. “Several homes were built at this time but it was only later that the subdivision filled in, and without regulation.”

The name honoured John McDonald (1864-1942), chief superintendent of West Kootenay Power, who lived there with his wife Ethel Elder McDonald, a teacher, and their two children. Son Jack was known to many as a noted historian and the driving force between the establishment and operation of the Rossland Museum.

Edgemont: Listed as a subdivision in Rossland: The First 100 Years, but it appears to have fallen from use.

Charlston: The area around Charlston Street. Named after a mining claim.

Redstone: Developed in the 2000s, it’s everything adjacent to Redstone Resort golf course, including Redstone Drive,

Silvertip Road, Lynx Road, and White Tail Drive. The homes were built on what was once scrub land and Chinese gardens.

Iron Colt: A subdivision developed around Iron Colt Avenue within the last 20 years or so, and named after a mine.

McLeod East: A subdivision adjacent to Iron Colt, developed in the last decade at the east end of McLeod Avenue. The street was named in 1947 after John McLeod (18841962), who served as Rossland’s city clerk from 1911 to 1955.

Grand Forks can now move forward on a number of flood recovery efforts, from dike reinforcements to buyouts for properties in the Kettle and Granby Rivers’ local floodplain, now that $53 million in disaster

mitigation assistance has been confirmed.

The announcement came to the relief of many involved in flood recovery, who have been waiting to hear back on the funding for nearly a month. Other communities in the province such as Richmond in the Lower Mainland received confirmation of flood mitigation support before Grand Forks. The Boundary Flood Recovery team applied for the grant in

January.

The provincial parliamentary secretary for Emergency Preparedness, Jennifer Rice, made the announcement Wednesday morning on the bank of the Kettle River in South Ruckle, one of the neighbourhoods hit hardest by last year’s May flood.

“These investments will go a long way toward mitigating the impact of a potential emergency, both here

and elsewhere in B.C., ” Rice told a crowd of reporters, downtown business owners and Ruckle residents.

“I think we can go out there and say to people over the next four to five years,” Grand Forks mayor Brian Taylor said, “‘We’re going to build you an unfloodable town, so come and live here, come and put your resources into Grand Forks and help us build a better community.’”

Explicit sex-ed guide for adults mistakenly given to Creston elementary students Jenneil Peters Creston Valley Advance

A number of parents were left baffled after a graphic sex education guide was mistakenly distributed to a Grade 6 and 7 health class at a Creston elementary school, sparking an apology from the school district for the awkward mishap.

Concerned parents voiced their anger at a Kootenay Lake school district meeting on Tuesday evening. The booklet, called The Safer Sex Guide is published by the Canadian AIDS Treatment Information Exchange and provides tips on how to prevent sexually transmitted infections.

The booklet clearly states online and inside that the guide contains sexually explicit information and is meant for mature audiences.

Terine Sandre, one of the parents who attended the meeting, told the Creston Valley Advance that she has since spoken to the president of CAITIE, who told her that the

book was originally ordered by the local public hospital.

“He said if we would have known that that book was going near any elementary school, it would have been red flagged and never sent out to that hospital,” Sandre said.

In a letter to parents last Friday, principal Ken Wiens deemed the material to be inappropriate for the age group and apologized for not being more diligent in vetting the material beforehand.

A letter from Interior Health public health nurse Kayla Benson the same day also confirmed that the resource had not been reviewed before providing it as a resource to students.

“This is a new resource that we did not review completely before providing it to Mrs. [Carmen] Murphy to use as a further resource for the students.” she said. “Upon review, it was evident that there was some explicit language and content used that may not be appropriate for

this age group.”

At Tuesday’s meeting, the school board recognized parents were distraught by the Safer Sex Guide and explained to parents that the school board does not have control over the health authority or the public health nurse.

SD8 Supt. Christine Perkins agreed with the concerns of the parents.

“The material was written for adults, by adults, the graphics and language are clearly for the 19-plus age group,” Perkins said.

“Up to this event, we have had implicit trust in our partnership with our local health care providers; unfortunately, at this moment, that has been broken.

“We did receive an email in support of the program,” added Perkins. “Surprisingly, although the parents were kind of shocked that their conversation with their son was taking place earlier than usual, they wanted the board to know that as parents they had 100 per cent confidence in teacher Murphy, and were not upset about the situation at all. So there are diverse opinions.”

Perkins assured parents that in the future all documents being offered to students by a third party will be thoroughly reviewed by both principal and classroom teacher before being distributed.

While a flood-proof town may be difficult to guarantee, the Boundary Flood Recovery team is now gearing up to reinforce more riverbanks and dikes and buyout some floodplain properties in order to mitigate future financial impact to homeowners in the event of another disaster.

Floodplain management is a top con-

cern for Grand Forks, Boundary Flood Recovery Manager Graham Watt told the Gazette last month. Watt explained that the city’s existing maps received few updates since they were first created in the 1990s.

“Floodplain management needs to be the same level of priority for local government as drinking water,” Watt said in May. “Doing it

right saves lives, doing it wrong puts them in danger.”

Through last fall and winter, the city conducted risk and damage assessments on properties in North and South Ruckle to determine if buying out property owners would be a viable option to reduce future risk. In a survey of flood-affected land owners, more than 80 per cent of respondents

said that they would be in favour of a buyout with fair compensation.

The federal government is providing nearly $20 million, the provincial government has pledged more than $28.9 million and the city of Grand Forks will be contributing $1 million. The province is also offering an addition $2.6 million to secure downtown Grand Forks.

International evangelist expected to draw large crowd to Castlegar Angus Buchan and The Mighty Men’s Conference this weekend BETSY KLINE Castlegar News

An internationally known evangelist is coming to the Castlegar area and close to 1000 people are expected to attend the event.

The Mighty Men’s Conference Canada, taking place at the Pass Creek Fair Grounds June 28-30, will be featuring Angus Buchan and musician Robin Mark.

Buchan is a farmer turned full-time evangelist from South Africa. His story was made famous in the movie Faith Like Potatoes. He began hosting Mighty Men’s Conferences with attendance growing to the hundreds of thousands.

The movement has spread and conferences are held around the world.

Nelson resident Jeff Zak has organized the local event.

“The main thing is to encourage men to be all they can be for their families and their homes — there’s not enough encouragement for men today,” said Zak. “If a man has more stability and strength and direction at home, it is good for the whole family.”

Zak was inspired to organize the event after attending a Mighty Men’s Conference in South Africa in 2010 with 400,000 people in attendance.

Zak brought Buchan to Nelson for a smaller scale event in 2012.

“He has got a big heart and he is an interesting man,” said Zak. So far registrations have come in from across Canada and as far away as Alaska, Arkansas, Ireland and Nepal.

Robin Mark will be leading the music for the event.

Mark is a Northern Irish Christian singer, songwriter, worship leader, and recording artist based in Belfast. He has released thirteen albums with sales of over two million worldwide and has won the Gospel Music Association’s international award.

Four sessions will take place during the event: Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday at 9:30 a.m.

The Sunday morning session is free and open to everyone.

Registration costs $25. Tickets are available at the door, but organizers are encouraging early registration so that the onsite food vendors can better prepare for the event.

It’s a sunny, hot afternoon, but a group of elderly women are outside, looking through a fence at an enclosed space in the courtyard of their seniors home.

Inside the pen, a trio of chickens are doing what chickens do — scratching, pecking the ground, and softly vocalizing.

“It’s warm today, they’re kind of exhausted, it’s so hot,” says Ellen Demers, as a black pullet pecks at a handful of oats she’s offering through the wire. “See how they’re drinking that water?”

Demers, who has lived at Castlegar’s Talarico Place for two years, says being able to be around the chickens means a lot to her.

“I came from a farm when I was young, and I just love those things, I just love them,” she says. “They always seem to come to me, and I enjoy that.”

Demers isn’t the only one who loves the chickens. A few yards away, inside the air-conditioned building, other seniors are peering through the

windows to catch a glimpse of the birds.

At Talarico Place, the animals have become the centre of attention for the seniors, the gossip at breakfast and the go-to topic between residents passing time.

“To hear the residents talking about them in the dining room in the morning — ‘Where are the chickens? How are the chickens?’ — it’s been amazing,” says Kelly-Anne Gyurkovits, the recreation co-ordinator at the home.

Gyurkovits says she first read about chickens being used as seniors therapy a few years ago, and started to lobby her administrator to let her give it a try.

“At first the staff thought we were out of our minds, saying this wouldn’t work, there’s no way we could do this,” says Gyurkovits. “I kind of put a bug in [my boss’] ear a few years ago, and she thought I was kidding.

“And then she went away on holidays, and when she got back, I said ‘we have this all organized,’ and she said ‘let’s give it a shot.’”

The chicks arrived one year ago, just a couple days old. At first they had a small enclosure, and wandered freely around the courtyard. But, when the chickens started doing what chickens do after eating, it became clear they needed to be in an enclosed space.

“We call it Chicken TV,” says Gyurkovits.

“If it’s not hot out here, there’s a lineup to see them and feed them. We have people in the dining room saying ‘can you move that chair for me? I can’t see the chickens.’

“I’ve been working with seniors for 30 years, and this is the

Gyurkovits’ boss, Stacey Thin, says having the chickens meets with the institution’s greater goal, to create a rich, healthy, loving place for seniors. The path to that goal is creating interactions and building seniors relationships with animals, children and the community.

“It’s just a joy. It brings back memories and all those things they did as children, or chores as adults.

“We have a generation of people here who didn’t necessarily have an indoor dog or an indoor cat, they had farm animals,” she says. “That’s what they are used to, that’s their thing. This is something they can identify with.”

As far as Gyurkovits and Thin know, they are the only seniors facility in the province providing Chicken TV. But she doesn’t think they’ll be the last.

It’s been long enough in the sun, for both chickens and humans, so Ellen Demers and friends retreat to the cool interior of the home. But she’ll be back as soon as she can, she says, with some treats for them.

She likes to share her ice cream with the birds — a chicken favourite, apparently. “ T h e y ’re not spoiled,” she says.

“They’re loved.”

Change needed after Senate tactics kill private members’ bills

L

ast week, the Canadian Senate killed all private members’ bills before them—29 bills, including my bill advocating for the use of wood in federal government infrastructure.

This was achieved by a very small group of Conservative senators who wanted to block the passage of my colleague Romeo Saganash’s bill on the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People. The easiest way they could kill that bill was to kill all private members’ bills.

When I first arrived in Ottawa as an MP, public sentiment was running strongly against the Senate. We’d just been through the Mike Duffy scandal and most Canadians were fed up with stories of entitled, unelected senators who didn’t show up for work, padded their expense accounts, and didn’t seem to play a very useful role in governing Canada.

As I met a number of senators in my first couple of years my feelings about the institution began to soften. Newly appointed senators were chosen through a merit-based competition process and were independent of the government caucus.

As I got to know more senators, I was

impressed with the hard work and long hours that most of them put into the job.

I witnessed government bills rammed through the House of Commons and saw the more involved debate that they faced in Senate committees. I began to think that maybe there was a case for a truly independent body of “sober second thought.”

But the events of the last few months have changed my thoughts once again.

If abolishing the Senate is too difficult,

we must at least reform its rules and procedures.

One example: the bizarre way the Senate arranges its debates. Instead of debating one bill for a few hours or days, the Senate puts all bills before it on the daily agenda (called “the scrolls”, hinting how old this practice must be) and deals with them in numerical order.

If someone wants to speak to a bill, they can talk for 45 minutes (we get 10 minutes in the House of Commons), or simply say “stand”, which puts off debate on that bill for another two weeks. Private members bills come last each day.

My private members’ bill was passed through the House of Commons a year ago. It was first debated in the Senate last October. It required a speech from the Conservative critic (who was in favour of the bill) before it could be voted on and sent to committee. He didn’t get around to giving the speech until May. Then, as time wound down for this parliament, the real shocking procedures unrolled.

First, there were a few weeks of standoffs as senators jockeyed for committee time. By the time that was sorted there were only two or three weeks left and I was getting a little anxious. But I got a call from the committee clerk telling me

my bill would be voted on that evening and then go to committee two days later.

I slipped back to the Senate to watch the vote.

But the vote on my bill never happened—the Senate never got to the private members bills at the end of the agenda. A series of delaying votes, a two-hour supper break (we don’t get supper breaks at all in the House of Commons), and long speeches on government bills filled the evening. Shortly after 11 p.m., the senators realized they weren’t going to get anything else done and adjourned for the night. And that’s how my bill died. That’s how every private members’ bill died over the following days.

Private members’ bills are written, developed, promoted and debated by elected Members of Parliament. MPs work for years to get their bills passed by the House of Commons, and few substantive bills reach that milestone.

Then the bills go to the Senate. It is unconscionable that a small group of unelected Conservative senators—who don’t even have a majority in the Senate—can then kill the bills at their whim.

It’s time for change.

REGIONAL Kimberley RCMP continue to investigate 50-year-old missing person case Phillip Porter, age 16, disappeared on June 26, 1969 CAROLYN GRANT Kimberley Bulletin

June 26, 2019 marks the 50 year anniversary of the disappearance of Phillip Porter of Kimberley. Teenager Phillip disappeared running an errand for his mother on June 26, 1969 and was never seen again.

At the time, Phillip was 16 years old and lived with his family on Giegerich Road in Townsite.

Kimberley RCMP Sgt. Chris Newel says that although the case is 50 years old, it remains active, and police are reaching out to the public for any information that could assist in bringing closure to the family.

“Phillip left the house around 1:00 pm on June 26, 1969. He was expected home around 5:30 pm for dinner. When he didn’t return, Mrs. Porter called friends to see if they had seen Philip,” wrote Newel in a press release.

At the time, Phillip’s father was the general manager of the Cominco Mine (now Teck).

Mrs. Porter was scheduled to fly to Trail that evening but the flight had been cancelled so,

Philip Porter was 16 when he disappeared.

At 10:30 that night, the family received a phone call from a man requesting $100,000 for the return of their son.

After the phone call, the first ransom note was received. It read: BOY ALIVE WELL. MISSES MOTHER. SMARTEN UP IF YOU WANT HIM BACK ALIVE .YOU WERE TOLD NOT TO CALL COPS JUNE 26. DUMB. PLAY YOUR PART. FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS EXACTLY OR YOU WILL NEVER SEE HIM AGAIN. TRUST US NO ONE WILL EVER FIND HIM. ALL WE WANT IS MONEY. HOW BAD YOU WANT HIM .YOU GET ONE MORE CHANCE. DON’T THINK WE

A few weeks later, another note was received with instructions on where to leave the money at a location

in Wycliffe. Phillip’s father followed the instructions while police watched.

On July 26, 1969, Earle Bennett’s car approached the cabin where Mr. Porter had left a note as instructed and Bennett went inside.

His car was stopped as he left the cabin and the note found in the vehicle.

Earle Bennett was arrested, charged with extortion, and convicted.

Although he remained a subject of interested in Phillip’s disappearance, Bennett died in a plane crash on Oct 30, 1974.

“He was convicted of the extortion and he was imprisoned for three years,” Newel said.

“He wasn’t out for very long and then he died.

But he never confessed.”

Bennett only admitted to being part of the extortion and said he acted alone, taking advantage of the fact that Phillip was missing.

As part of the investigation, officers traveled to various parts of Canada and the USA. In addition to local ground searches of mine shafts and sewer pipes, a property in Wycliffe was searched, as was Moyie Lake. Wire taps, polygraph tests and undercover operations were all used in the investigation. Posters with a description of Phillip were posted around town.

ious reported sightings over the years but, unfortunately, they have not resulted in locating Philip.

Phillip’s brother, Doug, who is 75 now, recalls his time with Phillip. “I had moved away from Kimberley prior to Phillip’s disappearance but came back regularly to visit,” says Doug Porter, who was 25 years old when Phillip went missing.

“I had come home for Christmas in 1968 and I have a vivid memory of Philip and I skiing and having lunch on the hill.

That was the last time I

saw him.”

S/Sgt. Fred Bodnaruk was Kimberley Detachment Commander at the time. He was a friend of the Porters and spent a lot of time working on the investigation.

“Even to this date, I think about it often. I’m troubled that there has never been any closure on the matter.”

Bodnaruk continued to be bothered by the investigation. Ten years ago, be spoke with the Kimberley Bulletin about why he continued to believe the evidence pointed to Bennett.

“Bennett was the neighbour of the Porter family and on several occasions was observed talking in a very friendly manner to Philip.

“Bennett takes leave from his company job against the wishes of his wife, when questioned by her about this he tells her he has something interesting to do and since they don’t get along anyway it shouldn’t matter.

Bennett was not known to ever wear that toque, furthermore at this time Bennett was 54 years old and generally bald.

The hair that remained on Bennett’s neck was grayish. Phillip was known to wear a toque and his hair was dark

and healthy. “Subsequently the RCMP crime lab examined the hair and found it similar to samples of Phillip.

“A neighbour of Bennett, two houses to the east, left on his holidays and asked Bennett to care for the property.

“Unfortunately the police did not learn of this event until the month of August, a search was executed on this prop-

erty and I found a bag of decomposed fruit and vegetables proven to be quite similar to those that Mrs. Porter sent Phillip to buy at Supervalu.

“Phillip was positively identified as climbing the stairs on his way home shortly before the noon hour; the stairway is just across the street from the Bennett residence. This is the last

known sighting of Phillip.

“To this day, I wish I could blame someone else,” Bodnaruck said.

The Trail Stingrays competed in the Creston Waves annual swim meet on the weekend with golden results. Aubrey Demmler won gold in Boys Div 1, Reuben Demmler captured gold in Div. 4 and Paul Fricke swam to another gold in Div 8. Kate Fricke took home silver in Girls Div. 2, Claire Fricke also captured silver in Div 4. The team came sixth overall with 419 points, great results for the 12 swimmers that participated. Stingrays Coach Tess Markus was impressed with the team, in particular: “Awesome swims from Bobby Edge in breaststroke and Caleb Write in freestyle.” The Stingrays next meet goes in Castlegar July 6-7.

Smokies still building for upcoming season Outlaws sweep JIM BAILEY Trail Times

It may be summer, but the Trail Smoke Eaters coaching and recruiting staff is still hard at work.

The Smokies committed two veteran players to their line up and an up-and-coming defenceman. Trail announced the addition of 20-year-old forward Michael Colella, forward Liam Freeborn, 19, and 17-year-old defenceman Jackson Murphy-Johnson.

Murphy-Johnson played with the BC Major Midget’s Vancouver North East Chiefs and played in all but two games over the course of the past two seasons. The six-foot-two, 180-pound rearguard played in 78 career games with the Chiefs, tallying 5 goals and 22 assists for 27 points while accumulating 89 penalty minutes.

“Jackson Murphy-Johnson is our final addition to our non-junior recruiting class,” said Smoke Eaters head coach and GM Jeff Tambellini in a release. “He is a powerful young man who defends with contact and was regarded as one of most difficult defenceman to play against in the BCMML.” Colella is a five-foot-seven, 161-pound winger and played last season with three different teams in the United States Hockey League including the

Omaha Lancers, Tri-City Storm, and Lincoln Stars.

The Turnersville, New Jersey native is also committed to attend Colorado College in 2020, and if he is anything like former Smoke Eater Nick Halloran - another diminutive forward who went onto a stellar NCAA career at Colorado - then Smokies fans will have a lot to cheer about.

“Mike Colella is going to be a great addition for our hockey team,” said Tambellini. “He is a dynamic scoring winger who is coming off a high production season in the USHL. Mike has a relentless style of play and his enthusiasm for the game can be seen every time you watch him play.”

At six-foot-one 185-pounds, Freeborn played all his minor hockey in Calgary, and is a graduate of the Royals Midget AAA program. He tallied 18 goals and 36 points in 34 games in the Royals’ 2016-17 season to lead his team and finish sixth overall in league scoring.

He made the jump to the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) in 2017 and played 17 games with the Spruce Grove Saints before being moved to the Calgary Mustangs. In the 2018-19 season, the power forward tallied 20 goals and 53 points in 58 games, and put up an impressive 77 penalty min-

utes.

“Liam Freeborn is a very important addition to our hockey team,” said Tambellini. “He is a big, right shot, right winger who has highend playmaking abilities that will compliment our forward group.”

In May, the Mustangs were forced to take a “leave of absence” from the AJHL after a failed attempt to relocate to Strathmore, making the Mustang players including Freeborn available.

“It is very exciting to add a veteran player who is coming off a 53-points season and going into his third year of junior,” added Tambellini.

“His frame will add to an already big forward group and we believe his character and professionalism will have just as much impact as does his physical size.”

The Smoke Eaters are in serious building mode and announced a number of commitments in the past months.

In early May, the Smoke Eaters committed to 19-year-old forward Phillipe Lapointe, and also named Phillipe, the son of two-time Stanley Cup champion Martin Lapointe, the Smoke Eaters’ captain.

Trail is now counting down to their Main Camp at the end of August when the players come together to compete for a position on the final roster.

The Cranbrook Outlaws stole two games from the West Kootenay Timberwolves in their home rinks on the weekend.

On Saturday in Castlegar, the Outlaws offence dominated as they won 12-4 against their Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League rivals.

Fletcher Backshell-Jones led the Outlaws with three goals and four assists for seven points in their Saturday win. Wyatt Fancy collected five goals in the game, while Seth Swager had three goals and three assists for six points.

On the losing side, the goals were well distributed with Dustin Perepolkin scoring a goal and adding two assists, with Eric Reid, Cale Seftel, and Reece Whitehead adding the other goals for West Kootenay.

On Sunday in Rossland, the Outlaws offence continued to soar as they won 11-5 over the Timberwolves.

Fancy led the Outlaws with four goals and three assists for seven points in the game and Avery Burki finished the game with two goals and three assists. On the West Kootenay side, Brian Martin tallied four goals and an assist for five points.

The games wrap up the regular season, with the Outlaws going 6-5-1 and the Timberwolves finishing with a 4-7-1 record.

The teams will meet for the Junior B Tier III Championship in a best-of-three series.

The Timberwolves will look to repeat as champions, while the Outlaws will enjoy home-court advantage with the games going at the Memorial Center in Cranbrook on July 5 at 8:30 p.m., July 6 at 7 p.m. and July 7 (if nec.) at noon.

Trail All Stars

The Trail Little League Major All Stars looked in mid-season form on Wednesday when they hosted their lone home game of the summer against Chewelah at Andy Bilesky Park. The All Stars, coached by D. J. Ashman, rolled over the visitors, putting their excellent fundamentals of hitting, fielding, pitching, and base running on display. The All Stars are preparing for the BC Little League Championship hosted by Little Mountain in Vancouver July 20-28 and will play in tournaments in Calgary, Kalispell and Chewelah in the three weekends leading up to provincials.

Canada slinks out of women’s World Cup contention

t was great that the weather broke almost perfectly last Sunday, so several hundred local ball fans could take in the Trail - Cubans (Union de Reyes, mostly alumni) game.

Entertaining game, happy crowd, kinks being eased out of the services to be available at the end of next month and on the long weekend, when the Orioles will, once again, host the provincial championship tournament.

The Cuban players were fun, talented, fast, and deserved to win, if not, perhaps, in quite the blowout that appeared in the final box score. A highlight for this old catcher was the incredible arm of the Union de Reyes backstop. There are not many, even in the major leagues, with quite as much pure arm strength as that guy.

Too bad that talent was so obvious, because we never got to see used in seriousness - no Oriole was even tempted to test it.

• The Cuban team went on to be thumped by the Burnaby Bulldogs in their opening game of the Grand Forks Invitational Tournament on Tuesday, but that is one game and nothing has been decided.

As I write this, those same Bulldogs are three outs away from knocking off perennial contender, current U.S. senior amateur national champion and two-time defending GTI champion Seattle Studs (Thursday morning).

Spoiler Alert! The Bulldogs will be prohibitive favourites at the provincials in Butler Park.

you have already missed your opportunity to watch the Trail Youth Baseball finals, at Butler, unless it absolutely poured Thursday afternoon. Too bad, the kids would have loved to see you out there in support.

• Not that baseball season is over here just yet. The contending AA Orioles will host North Central in their last regular season games, July 13, 1 and 3 p.m. at Butler, and the senior Orioles team will have three games with Vernon as a warmup for the provincials two weeks after that.

If you have forgotten, or never knew, what a great little entertainment venue Butler Park is. you should make an effort to investigate it.

• I want to fire the Canadian Women’s Soccer Team coach.

There have been attempts to mitigate the disappointment of the team being out of the World Cup earlier than usual, but they

are, to put it kindly, disingenous.

Given an opportunity to very likely at least force extra time in the round of 16 knockout game, the team somehow decided that it was okay that Christine Sinclair graciously allowed a basic beginner to take on the effort. That beginner telegraphed her play and the Swedish keeper, even hampered by the new stickiness of the penalty kick goaltender status, was there in lots of time to stop the rolling effort.

Let’s See! Sinclair is the best player in the history of female soccer, and soon will be its most prolific scorer, despite playing on representative teams without the firepower to free her up with chances.

In the event of a loss, Sinclair, who has often single-handedly made Canada competitive, would be finished with the World Cup competition.

The tactical plan of the current coach allowed the team to create almost no good opportunities to score during live play, and he did not adjust that plan one iota, allowing Sweden’s, “Park the Bus in the Area,” tactic to stifle any potential Canadian offence - so a successful PK was likely the only possible way for Canada to score, in a game they lost 1-0 to essentially Sweden’s only on target attempt of the game.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother Louisa (Louise) Pellegrin at the age of 87. Louise passed away peacefully at Columbia View Lodge on June 24, 2019. She was predeceased by her husband Ferro, her dear sister Joanne, and brothers Beppi and Dick. She leaves behind her son, Glenn (Delaine), daughter Donna (Alex), her cherished grandchildren Nicole (Tristan), Scott, Melissa, Lauren and greatgranddaughter Tessa.

Louise was born and raised in Trail, BC and spent her life there raising her family. Louise was devoted to her family & her family was the most important thing in her life. She was happiest when family was all together & took great joy in preparing wonderful meals for us all. She was a true homemaker, a wonderful cook/baker and took great pride in keeping a spotless, tidy home. She loved to garden and preserved much of the garden’s harvest to be enjoyed in the winter months. In her quiet time she was an avid reader. She was a very compassionate individual and enjoyed volunteering at the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital. She also made the most of every opportunity to be with her family and many friends and enjoyed various activities over the years. Mom’s endless love & compassion has been etched into our hearts for eternity.

With sadness we announce the passing of Michael (Mike) Winter on Monday, June 3, 2019.

Mike will be missed & remembered by his children, Shane, Chris & Chynna; grandchildren, Dominic, Damian, Anastacia, Dakota, Jackson, Ayden & Masha; brothers, Bill, Tim & Scott, sisters, Pat, Donna & Laurie; half-siblings, Shirley, Maureen, Neil, Valerie, Crystal, Peter & Star, and a large extended family and many friends.
