A full-time mental health clinician will soon be operating in Quesnel as part of a two-year mental health and wellness capacity-building pilot project.

The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) will fund one full-time Clinical Program Co-ordinator/Clinician position and one part-time administrative support position for

the two-year pilot project, and Quesnel Council has approved office space, at no charge, at 345 Anderson Dr. (the previous Community Policing Access Centre) in West Quesnel and up to $5,000 to outfit this office. The office’s hours of operation will be Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This pilot will focus on strengthening capacity for community-based mental health and psychosocial services and supports for adults, children, youth and families who live

in Quesnel and surrounding areas.

Doris Hocevar, the Community Wellness Manager with United Way Thompson Nicola Cariboo, made a presentation about the initiative to council Tuesday, June 25.

Hocevar was hired as one of four community wellness managers throughout the Thompson, Nicola and Cariboo regions in April 2018, and each one was tasked with identifying the psychological and psycho-social impacts that Continued on Page A3

“As you all know, the impacts are certainly far-reaching and are impacting the economy, education, family, environment, and we will see these impacts probably for many years to come, for generations to come,” she said.

This Community Wellness Initiative falls under the B.C. Wildfire Mental Health and Wellness Recovery Strategy.

A Quesnel Mental Health and Wellness Plan for Wildfire Recovery Plan was developed through this work, and one of the top recommendations was to “somehow figure out a way to bring Canadian Mental Health Association resources to our community,” explained However.

To help inform that process, Hocevar created a sub-committee of the Quesnel Wellness Working Group, the CMHA Advisory Committee, and that committee has had two meetings so far.

The committee identified gaps in services, which include a lack of outreach men-

tal health support; no outreach mental health support for adults, youth, families and the elderly; a need for trauma counselling and support; there is nowhere to access a drop-in counselling service; the need for community navigators who can assist people in finding timely and accessible resources; and the need for counsellors to respond during evacuations and check in on people who have been relocated.

Hocevar says they also identified the vulnerable populations in our community as seniors, youth, First Nations Elders, children, the homeless, people with addictions, people with mental health issues, people with disabilities and people for whom English is a second language.

Hocevar approached CMHA Prince George executive director Maureen Davis more than a year ago, and she says she was thrilled when she said yes, she was interested in being involved.

“With that comes a full-time, five-days-aweek mental health clinician to support the mental health and psychosocial

needs of individuals who are needing that service,” said Hocevar.

“The other piece that continuously showed up in the work I was doing was the need to have more clinicians to support Nazko, Lhoosk’uz Dene Nation, Lhtako Dene Nation and ?Esdilagh First Nation. I’ve had an opportunity to speak with the health directors of each of those First Nations and also with First Nations Health Authority.”

Hocevar says they hope to identify and provide healing through skills-based therapeutic interventions to individuals and families that have been impacted by fires and floods, and to support and enhance natural peer support in the community and support those who have been dealing with complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

“We will provide mental health outreach support, granted it is only one position, and like every new position, we will be generating stats, and we will be getting those numbers, and all of that information will be put in its respective place, whether it’s

adult, child, youth,” said Hocevar. “We will be keeping track of numbers, and I’m absolutely certain there will be a waitlist.”

Hocevar says the CMHA will also be providing Mental Health First Aid training and training for programs such as ASIST, SafeTalk, Safe and Sound, Duct Tape Isn’t Enough, Bounce Back, Bounce Back for Youth and Living

Hocevar told council they already have three candidates for the new position.

Councillors thanked Hocevar for the work and energy she has put into bringing these mental health supports and services to Quesnel.

“It’s something we need within this com-

“I’m happy this will be long-term work in the community.”

Faking our way through It’s a dance we do every five years or so.

We’re just five months away from the next federal election (18 months from the next U.S. federal election, thankfully we don’t have a two-year long campaign season too) and there’s a lot to worry about that voters haven’t had on their plate before.

It’s not the politicians, they are pretty much the same. Most have good intentions, some are questionable, but on average, most want to do a good job for their constituents.

But more than just judging which candidate seems the best qualified and most likely to do a good job—or at least not do a lot of damage—voters are going to have to contend with social media.

It’s a huge change from the last election—doesn’t really feel like five years, does it?—or the one before that. Back then, social media—Twitter, Facebook and the like—were relatively new, and candidates were using it to reach out more to their communities, interacting full time rather than just at scripted campaign rallies.

We began to know them as people, or at least as the people they wanted us to think they were.

That’s changed. The social media is now filled with as much bad information as good, perhaps more.

Along with our news articles, there will be lots of opinions out there from people you know and even more from people you don’t; on everything from the local candidate to the party leader.

And as we strive to bring you the best coverage, there is the opposite, what’s come to be known by the term fake news—everything from minor misinformation to out and out faked news stories, all designed to sway your vote by fair means or foul.

The latest addition to this category is deepfakes, where, as an article in The Guardian put it, “The truth goes to die.”

Altered photos have been a problem for years, though most are easy to spot. Deepfakes takes that to a whole new level, creating a video where you can have anyone say anything you want.

Want to see Andrew Scheer endorse Justin Trudeau? Or watch the prime minister say he is voting Green this fall?

Deep fakes can do that for you. And the technology is getting better every day.

There’s already a lot of distrust when it comes to politician’s promises, but deepfakes is going to take that to a whole new level.

This fall, and every election thereafter, voters are going to have to do a good job of educating themselves, not just on parties and issues, but on when and how they are being lied to.

Yes, there is a small group of Residents of Quesnel who have made the area of North Quesnel their homes and notably for most of us our place of retirement. Our small group are either directly or indirectly affected by the AR1 proposal. We agree YES, we need a BYPASS, but not the AR1 that MOTI (Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure) and the City of Quesnel have been pushing through hard.

The “disinformation” that our small group has been accused to causing confusion in the community must be hidden in the following information that we have been making residents aware of.

- MOTI has confirmed that there will be 15 residents totally affected and five partially affected, and there will some not affected other than required to reside overlooking the AR1.

- The Super-Save gas station will be one of

the properties to disappear.

- There has been indications that if the property lost at the Catholic Church and School is too great, that they may consider relocating to a new site.

- The total loss of a Green Belt that covers 60% of AR1 will be removed, these old growth Fir trees help to filter the pollutants of dust, exhaust and noise. This area is also the natural habitat for many animals and birds.

- Traffic control lights at the North and South end of AR1 and a new one at Racing road on top of Dragon Lake hill will cause major nightmares for the Transport truckers especially during winter months; it’s only a minor nightmares now. Chain up areas now are the spot where you spin out. We all know what happens when it snows on this hill.

- Our small group have been writing to MOTI to consider their own alternate pro-

posal the N-S Industrial Connector. All responses have been negative for various minor reasons. -Ministry of Highways at the time when they constructed the North Star Interchange must have had a future plan for this other than easy access to the landfill. This alternate route N-S Ind. Connector would solve the hauling through town and eliminate the winter trucker problems.

- At the MOTI information open house in Feb 2018, it was strongly voiced that if we don’t push the YES card that was handed out supporting the AR1, and if the MOTI did the N-S Ind Connector, the Quesnel taxpayers would have to fork out the taxes for a new bridge when and if needed.

- Our Mayor indicated to most of the attendees at the MOTI open house that he had attended all the private meetings with MOTI and residents who were being affected by the

AR1, and that they were all in favour of the proposed route. Of the 20 affected property owners at least 6 in the small group indicated that he was not at their meetings. Also from these private 20 minute meetings the first Project Manager of the MOTI it was stated that all the affected residents were 100% in favor of the proposed route. Again not true.

There are so many natural problems with Roads and Highways in the Quesnel area, the MOTI should not be asking for more.

Ask your MLA to address MOTI to do a in-depth unbiased study of the two routes before making an expensive error.

Letter to the Editor: Forest sector “crisis” could have been planned for When it became evident in 2002 that the Mountain Pine Beetle epidemic was going to devastate the interior lodgepole pine forests on a scale never seen before, the BC Liberal government of the day chose to turn a blind eye to this data and glossed over the long-term implications of this unprecedented, climate change induced event.

When the Liberal’s 2003 changes to forestry regulations and deep budget cuts to the forest ministry resulted in massive waste piles being left in the bush, they refused to deal with this issue in any meaningful way. The combination of large tracks of MPB-killed forests and years of accumulated slash piles are now feeding the unprecedented wildfires we’ve experienced over the last two years.

We had the luxury of time to manage our way through this transition period. We could have developed a comprehensive forest health strategy that took climate change into account. We could have moderated wildfire behavior and minimized timber losses through proactive management of our timber resources. We could have worked with the forest sector to entice and enable them to invest in alternate forest products manufacturing in BC. But, under the BC Liberals, we did not have the proactive political leadership

needed to make this possible.

Mill closures on the scale we are now experiencing were predicted as early as 2010, but no plans were put in place to deal with this scenario, instead the political leadership of the day chose to pretend we would simply find the timber to keep feeding these mills.

We can’t and we shouldn’t. We’ve run out of commercially viable timber to keep all the current mills operating and many must close if we are to avoid overharvesting our forest resources.

The predictions the former Liberal government dismissed as “sky is falling” negativity are now coming true with shocking accuracy and forest dependent communities, workers and contractors are bearing the brunt of the pain while all the former governing party members can offer them are petty partisan blame-game politics.

Missed opportunities aside, we’re here now and we need to move even more aggressively on our transition strategy.

We’re fortunate that Quesnel City Council developed and began to implement our community transition strategy in 2014 and the steps we’ve taken to date will help mitigate the impacts of the job losses we’ll experience here. We will continue to make investments

and engage in strategies to reposition our community so it remains a vibrant and resilient place that continues to attract visitors, residents, and investors.

We’re also fortunate that the two companies we have left, West Fraser and C&C Wood Products, are willing and engaged partners in our Future of Forestry Think Tank process. They’ve been actively engaged in this process from the outset. With the help of our local First Nations leadership, our industrial partners, and the local Ministry of Forests staff we will continue to drive our strategy to reinvent our local forest sector so that, despite the current challenges, it will continue to be a major job creator and contributor to our local and regional economy.

Alarmist partisan politics won’t help us get through this current situation. “Town Halls” that only feed people’s fears are not helpful.

We need productive and proactive leadership now more than ever. To date, the current provincial government has been much more open to engaging us and providing us with the resources we need than we experienced with the previous one and that bodes well for Quesnel.

Michael Kast’s Emotional Abstracts show runs June 28-July 27 at Quesnel Art Gallery Prince George artist’s month-long show will feature mainly acrylics LINDSAY CHUNG Observer Reporter

Michael Kast’s abstract paintings each represent his emotional state at the time he painted them, and he is going to be sharing how these emotions turned into art in the next show at the Quesnel Art Gallery.

Kast, who is from Prince George, opens his first show in Quesnel, called Emotional Abstracts, today (Friday, June 28). The works that will hang in the Quesnel Art Gallery for the next month are primarily acrylics.

“Each piece represents where I was emotionally at that particular time, so what I was feeling, so each piece is kind of unique to a timeframe, so I can’t really say [that one piece is my favourite],” he said.

“I have one piece called Smoke that I really, really enjoy, but other than that, most of them, the viewer will be able to see my own evolution in abstract painting.”

Kast has been an artist for a long time but really started taking his art seriously a couple of years ago.

He was doing photography from the time he was 16.

“Even in the darkroom, I was experimenting with different ways to print an image,” he said.

As far as painting goes, he says when he was an Artist in Residence for the Community Arts Council in Prince George in 2017-18, he started getting more serious about it.

“I’m rather introverted, so I made a decision that particular year that I needed to make some changes and I wanted to connect with my community, with my peers, more and put

myself out there and get outside of my comfort zone,” he said. “It was not so much a New Year’s Resolution as it was a New Year’s promise to myself to do these things, and I thought to myself ‘I’m going to apply that year, 2017 because the worst, I’ve learned over the years as an artist and a creator that the worst people can say is they don’t like it or no, and that’s OK.’ And so I applied for the

Kast also does more commercial digital work, and he is bringing some of that work for the showcase display at the Art Gallery, such as digital watercolours and animals.

Kast says Jackson Pollock is one of his biggest influences as far as abstract art, although he says his work looks nothing like Pollock’s, and he says he is also very influenced by an

artist in Portugal named Carla Sa Fernandes.

“I emulate her stuff; I just love it,” he said. “When you see my work, you can see her influence in my work for sure.”

Earlier this week, Kast said he has 16 pieces in the show, for sure. He has been working on a number of these piece since he was the Artist in Residence.

“When I started this abstract thing, it was an expression of where I was emotionally at that particular time, and I can see the change in my own style over the last year and a half,” he said.

Kast was in Quesnel Thursday to install his works, and he will be here for the Opening Friday (June 28) from 7-9 p.m.

“Abstract art is more than just flinging paint at the wall or the floor, and I’m not on a crusade, but I’d love to change people’s minds,” he said. “People have this idea in their mind of what abstract art is, and I want to share.”

More volunteers needed for SkyFest

People needed for many jobs, particularly parking, traffic, security, first aid and front gate ticket scanning LINDSAY CHUNG Observer Reporter

It takes many, many people working together to pull off a major event like SkyFest, and with Quesnel’s International Airshow just over a month away, organizers are putting out a call for volunteers.

“We are in desperate need of volunteers this year,” said SkyFest vice-president Sharon MacDonald.

Volunteers aged 19 or older are needed for gate admission, parking, event setup and break-down, grounds patrol and other duties. All volunteers will be required to participate in a practice day and must be available for safety procedures and operations orientation.

If you won’t be in Quesnel for SkyFest but still want to be involved, there is lots to do before the big event as well.

Kathy Fowkes and her husband, Bill, are in charge of recruiting volunteers this year.

“Volunteering is great; it brings the community together in a really worthwhile way,” said Fowkes.

“My husband and I have been involved in SkyFest before as

volunteers and had a great time. It’s a great way to meet new people. It’s a busy time, but the show only works if there are volunteers.

“There are lots of things [to do], and we try really hard to make a good match for people so if they have particular skills or interests, we try very hard to make sure that is where they can work and help everybody out.”

At this point, they are about halfway to where they need to be in terms of volunteers, according to Fowkes.

Fowkes says there is a variety of volunteer jobs that need to be done, and right now, they are particularly looking for people to help with parking, traffic, gate ticket scanners.

“Those are the things that kick the day off really, really well,” she said. “There are thousands of cars that come in; if people have to wait in line for a long, long time and it’s hot, everybody wants to watch the show, it starts the day off not so great, so we want it to flow smoothly, and we want to get people in to their parking spot so they can get in and

find their spot and just enjoy the day and have a wonderful time.”

Fowkes says they also need help for setup the week leading up to the Aug. 2-4 event, as well as takedown, and there are many jobs that people can do.

“It’s not hard stuff; it just takes manpower,” she said. “That’s really, really necessary, and the more hands that do it, the easier it is.”

Fowkes says they also need more people to help with security and more trained first aid attendants.

“It goes without saying that the more people we have, then people can work shorter

shifts and then they get to enjoy the day as well and it’s not quite so onerous on everyone,” she said.

Before the show, they are looking for people who would be able to sit in the airport for a couple of hours and sell tickets in their new SkyFest office. People can also help sell raffle tickets for the SkyFest society at the Billy Barker Days Gold Dust Mall.

Fowkes says people can do more than one job if they have varied interests, and younger volunteers can be paired up with adults.

“It’s a great way for young people to get involved in volunteer-

ing,” she said.

MacDonald says there are also volunteer opportunities for groups like Parent Advisory Councils, Boy Scouts, school bands, Special Olympics and clubs and organizations to volunteer and make a little money, whether they are selling raffle tickets or are in charge of the inflatables area in the Kidzone, for example.

Fowkes recently received a phone call from a man from Germany who is spending one year in Canada. He will arrive in Quesnel right before SkyFest, and he told her his homestay mom encouraged him

to reach out and volunteer as a way to get involved in the community and meet people, and he says that although his English isn’t perfect, he’s very excited to be part of the event.

“People have been very, very welcoming and warm,” said Fowkes. “People are very positive and upbeat and wanting to help.”

Roger Knorr honoured for his service after 20 years with Quesnel Fire Department LINDSAY CHUNG Observer Reporter

Roger Knorr has been a full-time firefighter in Quesnel for 20 years, and today (Friday, June 28) is his final day in uniform.

Knorr is retiring, and he was honoured for his service Tuesday, June 25 during the Quesnel Council meeting, where his fellow firefighters filled the gallery as they took a break from their fire practice.

“Roger started his career with the City of Quesnel on March 1, 1999, working at the fire hall as our

fire training manager,” said Mayor Bob Simpson. “He’s been responsible for ensuring all our volunteer firefighters receive the necessary training and certifications.”

Knorr has worked 20 years full-time and 33 years altogether as a firefighter.

During his time with the Quesnel Volunteer Fire Department, Knorr has been a First Responder Instructor, High Angle and Confined Space Instructor and Fire Officer 1, he was elected on the B.C. Fire Officer Training Board of Directors, he was instrumental

in British Columbia, according to Simpson.

“Roger has been an integral part of the fire service team and will be officially retiring after June 28, 2019, after 20 years of dedicated service with the Quesnel Fire Department,” said Simpson. “Roger plans on spending time fishing, hunting, his to-do list and enjoying time with his granddaughter. Fire Chief Sylvain Gauthier announced Bart Schneider has been hired to take over Knorr’s role.

“It is with great sadness that we see Roger leave after 20 years with the department,” he said. “Unfortunately, we are going to be losing a lot of experience, especially with his training background, but we have a replacement who has just been hired, and with 19 years in the department, he is going to become a wonderful asset for the training section also.

”Bart has been very instrumental in 19 years with the fire department, going through the ranks, and he has done a lot of teaching, and he is very, very meticulous when he is teaching, which is going to be good for all our new recruits and new members. He’s going to be a great addition to the team.”

During the meeting, Knorr received a gift from Quesnel Council, and he also presented Schneider with a brand-new Fire Fighter Skills book as a symbol of passing on the knowledge.

Give Hope Wings touched down in Quesnel on June 15. The pilots are flying around B.C. and the Northwest Territories and circumnavigating Alaska to raise money for Hope Air, which provides flights to people in remote communities who need specialized medical care. As of June 15, they had raised $245,000. BC Wildfire Service recently announced that Category 2 open burning will be allowed once again throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre’s jurisdiction as of noon on Wednesday, June 26.

They have put a halt to the existing ban thanks to lower fire danger ratings in the region and expected rainfall and cooler temperatures.

A press release from BC Wildfire Service still urged caution, saying anyone who intends to conduct a Category 2 open burn needs to ensure it is done in a safe and responsible manner.

Fires cannot be more than two metres high by three metres high; a fuel break must be established around the area and at least one person equipped with a fire-fighting hand tool most monitor the fire at all times.

Anyone found in contravention of an open burning prohibition may be issued a ticket for $1,150, required to pay an administrative penalty of up to $10,000 or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail.

causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs, as well as the value of resources damaged or destroyed by the wildfire.

Kangaroos hand out year-end awards Coach and captain say next season will be great

The Quesnel Kangaroos held their annual awards banquet on Wednesday night (June 26) at the Billy Barker Hotel and Casino.

It has been almost four months since they dispatched of the Terrace River Kings to win their first CIHL playoff championship, and although it was raining outside, the mood was still quite high.

Five tables of players gathered to talk about the summer and their families, while taking the odd pot shot at each other.

For many of them, it was their first time getting together since hoisting the cup on the West Fraser Centre’s ice.

Club president Tyler Coleman took to the stage to tell a few jokes at the expense of a couple players before a delicious buffet was properly attended to.

Once everyone had their fill, it was time to announce the awards.

Most Popular Player went to Tommy Grant, who was unable to attend the ceremony. The offensive juggernaut set the playoffs afire this spring with many multi-goal games.

The club’s netminder won Most Valuable Player honours. In his first season with the club, Brandon Peacock provided some more-than-solid goal-

tending.

The Top Scorer Award went to Alessio Tomassetti. With captain Waylon L’Heureux out for most of the season with a broken arm, Tomassetti had to take on a major leadership role in the 2018-19 season, and nothing leads a team quite like putting the puck in the net. His 18 goals and 13 assists were good enough for second in the league.

Rounding out the awards, Top Defenseman went to Ryan Reynolds; Rookie of the Year was awarded to Chad Kimmie, and Most Dedicated Player went to Jonathan Belyan.

Head coach Harley Gilks, who handed out the awards, says it was good to see his players again and points out the importance of showing some recognition for their efforts this year.

“Getting awards like this, whether you’re a young kid or a grown man, it still has the same effect on you; it means — heck yeah! — I did what I could do, so it has a lot of meaning for sure.”

For all the Roos fans wondering whether the team will be able to repeat their remarkable run last year, Gilks insists they can count on another great season.

“We have a few more young players coming that play some good hockey, so we’re going to pick

up right where we left off.”

Waylon L’Heureux agrees the team is looking for strong.

“We have some new blood coming to the team,” he says, “There are a couple Quesnel boys that are coming out of junior that are pretty interested in playing, so we’re looking forward to getting them in here.

“It should be a competitive team.”

L’Heureux, who has been the team’s longest-serving captain, took to the stage to make a big announcement to those assembled.

While he still believes he can be a valuable member of the team, he will not be wearing a letter on

his chest this season.

“My arm’s still been bugging me after eight months, and it’s probably only sitting at about 60 per cent right now strengthwise, and last year, I didn’t feel right because I hurt it in the first month, so we played the whole year without a captain on the ice, which I think it important,” he said.

He added since there is a good chance that he will not get to play every game this year, he believes it is time to let somebody else take on the captain role of the team.

“It’s a hard thing for me to do because once you’re at my age and you stop playing hockey, you usually can’t play it again competitively like

this.

“I still think I can play, but I think it’s better to not have that role.”

For anyone looking to be a part of the team’s success this year, the Roos are looking to fill a couple of very important behind-thescenes roles.

The Quesnel Kangaroos are looking for a treasurer, as well as for someone to organize all the volunteers, scorekeepers, referees and ticket booth attendants.

A team of 20 athletes from Quesnel’s Special Olympic program put on a topnotch performance at the Okanagan Valley Challenge track and field meet in Kelowna this weekend (June 22-23).

The team has always been strong, and some new faces show it has a fabulous future ahead.

For three of the athletes, it was their first Special Olympics track meet, and half the team was under 20 years old.

One example of a young athlete showing incredible promise is 13-year-old Aleena Klotz.

In her first meet last year, she won firstplace ribbons in all four of her events.

This year, she finished first in the 100m, 200m and mini-javelin and second in shot put.

“Even more surprising was that she ran the 100m in the morning as a divisioning race and won, so she was bumped up a division to run in the top female division, and she won that race too, in a [personal best] time of 17.99 seconds.”

Also showing up to wow was 10-year-old Daniel Tilsner.

His coach says the young athlete decided a few weeks back that he wanted to run the 5000m because his teammate Brock Terlesky was doing it, and Daniel wanted to emulate him.

“So Daniel ran the 5K a few times, and his entry time was 29 minutes.

“Brock wasn’t able to go to the Kelowna meet, so Daniel and Cory were the two Quesnel entries in the 5K, along with a Kelowna runner.

“Daniel led the race from start to finish, ending with a time of 24:03.18.”

Unsurprisingly Riley Foster had a strong season. Along with Terlesky, he is one of the top athletes the program has.

At a big meet in Burnaby two weeks prior, Foster had the top long jump

(4.54m), the top shot put (10.64m) and one of the top javelin throws (20.14m) to finish with three firstplace ribbons.

In Kelowna, he won the 100m (12.90s) and the mini-javelin (21.29m) and has yet to hear back on the official shot put result.

Matthew Hender has also had a memorable season.

He is 15 years old, and in Burnaby, he had the second-longest javelin throw in the competition (25.07m), while in Kelowna, he had the farthest long jump (4.39m).

All three rookies won ribbons for their efforts too.

Twelve-year-old Dakota Blaich won second in 200m (37.27s, PB), third in the long jump (2.70m, PB), and third in javelin (6.67m).

Twelve-year-old Chad Harder finished first in the javelin (15.48m), which is a huge distance for his age, and second in shot put (5.54m).

Ten-year-old Noah Petersen finished first in long jump (2.88m), second in 100m (16.46s) and second in javelin (10.29m), which is also quite impressive for his age.

After 33 years in business at Blue Lake Family Resort campground, Evelyn Mattie has announced at the age of 86, she is retiring and selling the resort.

“I feel sad to close it down,” said Mattie this month as she prepares to leave to care for a sick family member, and also retire.

“I want to let people know. I don’t want people to come up that road and find it closed.”

band Gerry Mattie took over the Blue Lake Family Resort in the summer of 1986.

Evelyn is known for cooking for a large group of family and friends, with her favourite pastime at the lake organizing a potluck for her seasonal campers.

Evelyn will be closing the campground as of July 2.

She is welcoming seasonal campers, who pay for the whole season of camping and do small

duties such as remove their own garbage, clean outhouses and take care of their own sites on a regular basis.

“Evelyn has a fascinating story about her time at Blue Lake,” said seasonal camper Terry Hathaway. “She and the resort are a true historical part of the Cariboo.

We, as seasonal campers at Blue Lake wish Evelyn all the best, and we just hope we’re able to stay on as campers here at Blue Lake in the future.”

Lil was an avid gardener and was known for her beautiful ower and vegetable gardens. She was a dedicated caregiver to Bill who sustained lifelong injuries during active duty in WWII. Lil always enjoyed having her children and grandchildren around her. She was admired for her exceptional baking, knitting, crocheting and sewing. She was a champion ďŹ ve pin bowler during her Vancouver years. Lil was the matriarch of a family who will sadly miss her.
