A year of complaints – and some compliments Recycling, pedestrian and biking concerns dominate 2018’s feedback to the City of Abbotsford

More than a year after Abbotsford’s curbside ban on glass and plastic film took effect, residents continued to send the city frustrated messages about recycling difficulties.

Last year, residents sent around 100 pieces of unsolicited feedback to city officials through its website.

That feedback, which The News obtained through a freedom of information request, is diverse and runs the gamut from compliments to suggestions about improving city infrastructure to grumbling about local parking issues and sidewalks.

But amidst that feedback, recycling troubles were among the most common.

Several residents wrote to the city to say that the system – which requires glass and film plastics to be carted by hand to local depots – discourages even avid recyclers from keeping stuff out of the trash.

“I am the ‘recycling Nazi’ in my family and even I don’t want to bother recycling anymore,” one person wrote. Several noted that the system made recycling particularly difficult for those with busy schedules or who lacked cars.

“Do you think a bus would let us get on board if we were hulking around a bunch of blue bags with us? I very much doubt it,” another person wrote.

Two people wrote frustrated messages to the city about the inability to use compostable and biodegradable bags in their compost bins.

It was suggested by two people that Abbotsford follow the lead of Vancouver, where glass can be placed in a designated “grey box” for pickup, thereby removing the hazard of contamination – the reason officials say glass is no longer accepted curbside.

The Township of Langley and City of Richmond have similar programs, although few other B.C. cities have followed suit.

The complaints, all from 2018, came long after the recycling program had been implemented – and after councillors had suggested the city find some way to make recycling easier, rather than harder.

But contamination isn’t the only reason glass recycling has been de-prioritized, according to those in other communities. Recyclers have been finding it increasingly hard to find buyers for second-hand glass since the province’s last glass recycling facility closed a decade ago. And disposing

More than a year after the city’s ban on curbside glass and plastic film, residents continued to complain that the recycling regimen made life difficult.

of glass at landfills is less problematic, some have argued, because glass is an inert material that doesn’t break down and can produce gases or leach into the soil. nnnnn Recycling concerns comprised just a slice of the messages sent to officials, though.

Most of those who wrote in, did so to highlight issues pertaining to a certain road or city facility.

And although Abbotsford has a stated goal to make walking and cycling “delightful,” many wrote in to say that much has to be done on that front. Indeed, complaints from frustrated cyclists and pedestrians were far more common than those from drivers.

A George Ferguson Way resident wrote that the road “feels and sounds like a highway at times,” and isn’t bicycle friendly. That person, and another, said the city needs better maps

of its bike routes. One person said the map on the city app had “absolutely no basis in reality” and that some of the routes were “dangerous.” The map has since been updated. Another person wrote in to say that the speeds on Bradner and Downes road made biking on those two routes dangerous.

Many others called for the city to make it easier to walk, or cross the street, in their areas. Some wrote about the lack of crosswalks on busy streets, others about dangerously fast cars that jeopardized the safety of children and others walking nearby.

Another person fretted about heavy trucks using MacLure Road.

And one person urged the city to build more flashing crosswalk signal lights.

“Please invest in more of these signals, it will save lives,” the person wrote. This year, the city is adding flashing lights, of one sort or another, at 10 different pedestrian crossings.

Feedback on Abbotsford’s parks was generally more positive, with many suggesting ideas for further improving the city’s green spaces.

Mill Lake Park, not unsurprisingly, was the source of the most suggestions, with readers wanting an offleash dog area at Mill Lake Park, Christmas lights in December, more washrooms, and limits on fishing in areas near benches. Another person suggested swings at their local community park.

And when an ice storm hit and felled trees around Ponderosa Park, the city’s clean-up efforts drew a grateful response by one local resident.

While a complaint of one form or another was the source of most feedback, officials did receive occasional compliments for their work.

Residents praised the city’s recreation staff, along with parks and roads crews.

“Thankyou, Thankyou, Thankyou!” one person wrote after the city fixed up a sidewalk that had been “a mess.”

Another person heaped praise on a skate-rental worker named Dylan who went “above and beyond the call of duty.”

And garbage crews were praised for taking action to remedy the forgetfulness of a Sumas Prairie husband.

The city plans to install a short centre-lane barrier near a large Abbotsford condo complex in a move that may force the buildings’ stratas to agree to route traffic through a neighbouring development.

Last month, council urged stratas representing residents at the Regency Park apartments on Gladwin Road to come to an agreement that would stop left-turns out of the large complex.

A developer wants to build a new proposed apartment building at the complex, and the owner of a neighbouring Central Park Village development has set aside money for a gate that would allow access from Galibardi Drive, which has a traffic signal. But two Regency Park stratas voted down the proposal, saying it would cost them money and compromise garbage collection.

This week, the city’s transportation advisory committee endorsed staff’s plan to make left-turns from the complex illegal, and install flexible “tubular dilineators” along a short stretch of Gladwin to deter rule-breakers.

The move is likely to force the hands of the two recalcitrant stratas, which had voted against the proposal. A staff report notes that access through Central Park Village will make southbound turns onto Gladwin possible.

The project is estimated to cost $5,000.

In May, council urged the stratas to find a solution, pointing to the danger of left-turns from the site.

“I drive that frequently, and I often see people taking their lives into their hands making that left turn,” councillor Dave Loewen said.

Staff had told council that a left-turn barrier would eventually be constructed, although there were no signs that such a project was imminent.

A resident who favoured access through Central Park Village urged the city at the meeting to force his strata’s hand.

“To me, the safety issue outweighs everything else and we need to have that access to Garibaldi,” he said. “If it takes a median to make people realize that, then I propose put a median in ASAP.”

A large composting operation is shutting down after the Ministry of Environment said it risked polluting the “highly vulnerable” aquifer beneath it The operator of the McKenzie Road site had previously told a government inspector that he didn’t plan to take any action until his facility was legalized by the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) and the City of Abbotsford. But according to an email sent to neighbours by a Ministry of Environment official, the company behind the facility now plans to immediately close the operation after being threatened with a fine.

Lifesoils Products had been operating at the site for years, despite contravening a host of provincial and city rules. In addition to the aquifer concerns, neighbours were upset about smells, pests and truck traffic and the Ministry of Agriculture said the chicken manure composting posed a biosecurity hazard, because compost piles were located right next to a poultry barn.

The ALC told the facility to stop more than two years ago, but lifted the order in early 2017 when a non-farm use application to legalize the site was submitted.

That application first went to the City of Abbotsford, and this February council agreed to forward it to the ALC this February.

City staff suggested that a subsequent rezoning of the property would require the operator to fix the various problems identified by government inspectors.

“That tells me they’re moving in the right direction,” Mayor Henry Braun said at the time.

But Coun. Patricia Ross, the lone councillor who opposed forwarding the project, said the existing concerns were worrying.

“My concern is that past behaviour can be an indicator of future performance,” she said.

A month earlier, in January, a Ministry of Environment inspec-

tor had ordered Lifesoils operator Randy Dahl to control the leachate coming from the site in order to avoid a fine.

But when an inspector returned to the site in May, she found little had improved, with the composting area still uncovered and not on an impermeable surface, according to a report obtained

by The News.

Lifesoils owner Randy Dahl told the inspector that the company “does not intend to register or implement changes to achieve compliance with [the Organic Matter Recycling Regulation] and thus [the Environmental Management Act], until applications with the City of Abbotsford and Agricultural Land Commission have passed,” the report says.

The inspector referred the matter for an administrative penalty – essentially a fine. The company was also ordered to hire an expert to determine if run-off and/or leachate from the site is affecting, or could affect, the aquifer underneath.

In 2012, experts had rated the vulnerability of one of the aquifers in the area as “high.” The aquifer was described as highly productive, with dozens of wells at homes, businesses, industries and farms drawing water.

This week, an environment official told neighbours in the area that Lifesoils had “decided on the immediate shutdown of the composting operation.”

The Ministry would be “discussing the decommissioning process and timeline” with the operator this week, according to an email.

It’s unclear whether the shutdown will be permanent, and The News has not been able to reach the operators.

Neighbours believe the move will be permanent because of the regulatory difficulties faced

by Lifesoils. But the ALC confirmed Wednesday that the file remained open and that it was proceeding with the non-farm use application.

Should it take this long?

It’s been nearly six years since, speaking at a Kelowna rally, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced he would rather see cannabis legalized instead of just decriminalized.

Back then he was just plain old Justin, on the campaign trail trying to garner votes and reinvigorate the federal Liberal party. Two years later, the Liberals cruised back to power on that promise and others.

The Liberals defaulted on their promise to reform the electoral system, and you have to wonder if the promise of legal recreational cannabis is going to be substantially complete before the next federal election, this fall.

It’s not entirely the Liberals’ fault that we’ve yet to see a thriving cannabis industry. Though it took three years— three months later than the July 1, 2018 date first promised — they did deliver on the legislation last October.

But even though they had those three years, provincial and local governments didn’t really get started on their own legislation until, effec-

tively, the last minute.

So far, relatively few cannabis retailers have been able to open across Canada. Notably, the first to open in B.C. was a provincial government-operated store in Kamloops. Terrace’s first recreational cannabis store opened its doors to eager customers mere days ago on June 19. But most of the many applications from hopeful private retailers in the Okanagan and around the province are still waiting for the dual approval they need from the province and their municipal government.

It’s not that getting a licence to sell cannabis should be easy. It shouldn’t, and there are countless obstacles and social issues that need to be dealt with.

But with three years warning, there is little excuse for the provincial government not to have been better prepared to resolve those problems and implement legalization, which was a popular idea long before the Liberals decided to run with it.

Abbotsford Council will hold a Public Hearing at 7:00 pm on July 8, 2019, in the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium, 32315 South Fraser Way, Abbotsford, B.C., under the provisions of the Local Government Act to consider the following bylaws. SUBJECT LANDS: All properties located in the Agricultural Land Reserve that are zoned Agricultural One Zone (A1), Agricultural Two Zone (A2),Agricultural and Resource Processing Zone (A3), Agricultural and Produce Processing Zone (A4), Agricultural and Farm Industrial Zone (A5), and Agricultural and Commercial Mushroom Composting Zone (A6).

If Bylaw No. 2959-2019 is adopted, Abbotsford Zoning Bylaw, 2014 will be updated with new regulations for the production of cannabis in the Agricultural Land Reserve. The amendments propose a modernized definition for Cannabis Production Facilities and introduce new regulations related to permitted building types for growing and producing cannabis on agricultural lands. Proposed amendments also clarify regulations for accessory on-farm processing of cannabis and include consequential amendments to the Bylaw Notice Enforcement Bylaw, 2007 and Municipal Ticket Information Bylaw, 2007.

If Bylaw No. 2901-2019 is adopted, Business Licence Bylaw, 2006 will be amended to replace the existing definition and references to “Medical Marihuana Production Facility” with an updated definition and revised references to “Cannabis Production Facility”, and to coordinate with Zoning Bylaw amendments proposed under Bylaw 2959-2019.

The New Democratic Party has announced Abbotsford resident Madeleine Sauvé as its candidate in the Abbotsford riding for the upcoming federal election on Oct. 21.

According to a press release from the party, Sauvé plans to bring her work as a labour advocate, film worker, artist and educator to support the human rights-based platform of the NDP and national leader, Jagmeet Singh.

Sauvé lives in the Clearbrook neighbourhood of Abbotsford with her husband and their two young sons. She is an IATSE 891 film and tv worker who is active in her union, working to develop training for new members and to support inclusive, safe and fair workplaces for her fellow workers.

For 10 years Sauvé was a faculty member at Emily Carr University, where she represented contract faculty and worked with the Federation of Post Secondary Educators (the FPSE) to address precarity in post-secondary institutions in B.C. The release states that she is working to build on the achievements of previous NDP candidates, like Jennifer Martel who courted the youth vote under an organized labour banner and won almost 14 per cent of the ballots cast for Abbotsford in 2015.

“I am pleased to support Madeleine Sauvé as New Democratic Party candidate for Abbotsford in the upcoming federal election. Her work to advocate for the rights and safety of workers demonstrates a principled commitment to equality.

With our support she can bring progressive change to Abbotsford,” stated Terri Van Steinburg, Abbotsford resident and NDP member.

The 2015 Canadian federal election saw Conservative Ed Fast garner 48.27 per cent of the vote, Liberal Peter Njenga receive 32.78 per cent, the NDP’s Jennifer Martel collect 13.7 per cent, the Green Party’s Stephen Fowler at 5.02 and the Marxist-Leninst’s David MacKay receive 0.23 per cent.

Sauvé joins incumbent Ed Fast as the only two declared candidates so far. The Liberal party has two candidates pursuing the nomination, but there has not been an official announcement yet.

The Green Party also has not yet announced its candidate.

BC Cancer raising funds for dental clinic Two-chair clinic will provide services in Abbotsford for cancer patients

For Donald Erickson, having oral cancer care closer to home would help alleviate some of the strain in what is already an extremely stressful situation for him and his family.

Since his stage II multiple cell myeloma diagnosis in 2018 (his second cancer diagnosis in eight years), the Chilliwack resident has been trekking to Surrey for all of his dental appointments and dental work that arose as a result of his cancer.

“It was stressful, first being diagnosed with cancer, then

the very unpleasant surprise that it would impact my teeth,” Erickson said.

Many people undergoing treatment for cancer often experience dental problems that must be addressed by an oral oncology expert.

Currently, all cancer patients between Abbotsford and Hope with a need for specialized dental care must travel to other BC Cancer locations to receive this essential service.

Erickson believes having the dental clinic closer to home will help other families in a similar situation.

“It would have been much less of an ordeal if I could have made the 20-minute drive to Abbotsford, which I am familiar and comfortable with because of my regular visits to treat my cancer,” he said.

“Anything to keep cancer patients close to home, reduce stress and the difficulties surrounding treatments helps us – and our families – heal better and faster.”

An Abbotsford man who robbed a liquor store earlier this year after allegedly hitting two people with a metal pipe has now been sentenced.

Johnathan Rath, 37, received a sentence of 170 days in jail – once time already served was taken into account – to be followed by two years of probation on a charge of robbery.

Six other charges – two of assault with a weapon, two of assault causing bodily harm and one each of uttering threats and mischief – were stayed June 18 in Abbotsford provincial court.

Rath had also been charged with four counts of breaching his probation, but was sentenced to time served on just one of the charges.

Rath was arrested Feb. 9 in relation to two incidents. The first took place at about 9:30 p.m.

Two people called police to say that, without any provocation, a man had chased after them in the 2300 block of McCallum Road and hit them with a metal pipe.

They told police that the man then threw the pipe at one of them and smashed a car window before running away.

With an hour of the assault, police were called to a robbery in progress at a liquor store on Montvue Avenue.

Police said the suspect threatened store clerks with a knife, while stealing cash and alcohol.

Minutes later, at 10:34 p.m., patrol officers in downtown Abbotsford spotted a man matching the description of the robbery suspect.

Rath was arrested without incident and subsequently charged.

He was also sentenced last October in relation to another unprovoked assault.

City sees first proposal for ‘stacked townhouse’ project

A proposal to build Abbotsofrd’s first stacked townhouse development will go to a public hearing.

The stacked townhouse concept sees small, 600-square-feet units built on the ground floor of a townhouse building in an area that would more-typically be reserved for a garage and a den. A more traditional townhouse unit is built on top, with parking relegated to an underground garage.

A developer hopes to build a 66-unit complex on McCallum road, south of Highway 1. To proceed, the property must be rezoned and requires several slight variances. Council agreed earlier this month to forward the proposal to a future public hearing.

Around one-third of the units would have three bedrooms, and 10 have one bedrooms. The remainder have two bedrooms, about half with dens and half without.

All but one of the 153 trees on site are slated for removal. Many were described as being dead, dying or in poor health. Forty-eight new trees will be planted on site.

The development is the latest proposal for one of Abbotsford’s fastest growing areas. The land surrounding the King Road and McCallum intersection. More

And one more major piece of land remains, with the stacked townhouse property next to a larger lot designated

for midrise development in Abbotsford’s Official Community Plan. The area is just a couple blocks from the University of the Fraser Valley and part of the city’s UDistrict.

Coun. Sandy Blue said she liked the new concept.

“I think especially given the proximity to the university it’s going to appeal to faculty and staff as well and provide an option that doesn’t exist right now.”

A public hearing will be held at a future date.

UFV Lieutenant Governor’s Medal winner an advocate for Indigenous inclusivity Leanne Julian recognized for involvement in promoting diversity and reconciliation

As Leanne Julian stood outside as part of a group of geography students listening to Mt. Lehman community members explain how they wanted to present their community to the world, she could literally see her father’s home community, the Matsqui First Nation, not far in the distance.

But nobody else seemed to notice.

Julian was taking part in a planning course

taught by Cherie Enns, where students were working with the Mt. Lehman community on strategies to promote this rural corner of Abbotsford.

“In all the talk about their community vision, they did not mention what their relation was to the surrounding First Nations communities, even though I knew they were situated in the traditional territory of the Matsqui people,”

Julian said.

She gently challenged them on that, which led to her organizing a town hall dinner that brought together members of the Matsqui First Nation and the Mount Lehman community.

Enns said the impact of that session was significant.

“Since then, Leanne has been both an ambassador and a light in every setting where I have observed her,” she

said.

“The light she shines might not always be comfortable, but by her presence, commitment to truth, and knowledge, she is paying a key role in Indigenization at UFV and helping me to decolonize my curriculum.”

Julian is the 2019 recipient of the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal at the University of the Fraser Valley.

The criteria for the medal includes student involvement in promoting diversity, inclusion, and reconciliation.

Her willingness to share Indigenous knowledge that is “ingrained in (her) brain” is part of what earned her the medal.

“Some of my professors have said that I bring to a course as much as I take from it,” Julian said.

business courses, but “life got in the way” and she ended up dropping her courses.

Julian tried again in the mid-2000s, but childcare for her young daughter was a challenge and she didn’t make it to the end of the semester.

She had two more children, and when the youngest was five in 2014, she decided to give university another try, with encouragement and funding from Sts’ailes, her home community.

This included strong encouragement from her First Nations studies professor Gwen Point (who later became UFV’s chancellor).

Point expressed confidence in Julian, urging her to continue her education and noting that she saw the same leadership traits in her as Point had seen in Julian’s late grandfather Bill William, who was the first elected and longest-serving chief of Sts’ailes.

Still, there were struggles. She was juggling full-time school with full-time work and parenting, with a blended family of eight children and numerous grandchildren, several of whom live with her and her fiance at their home on the Tzeachten First Nation.

Julian faced further struggles when her mom passed away in 2015 and her grandmother and spouse’s grandmother in 2018.

“But the closer I got to the end, I’d keep telling myself, ‘Don’t’ stop now.

You’re almost done!’

As she progressed through her general studies degree, she noticed that she brought an Indigenous knowledge aspect to many of her projects, topics, and courses.

“And when I talk about Indigenous, I don’t just mean the Stó:lo/Coast Salish culture I grew up in,” she said.

Abbotsford celebrates Canada’s 152nd birthday with its annual parade and festivities at Abbotsford Exhibition Park and Rotary Stadium on Monday, July 1.

This year’s theme is “Superhero Canada Day.” The main City of Abbotsford parade takes place at 11 a.m. along South Fraser Way, starting from Ware Street and ending in the area of Trethewey and MacLure.

It is preceded at 9:30 a.m. by the smaller Mt. Lehman community parade along Mt. Lehman Road.

A family festival then runs from 1 to 10 p.m. at Abbotsford Exhibition Park (32470 Haida Drive) and includes an artisan market hosted by the Abbotsford Arts Council, community displays, mini golf, hayrides, the Dogwood Pacesetters Dog Show, and several interactive play zones.

Mt. Lehman community holds Canada Day parade

Event precedes main City of Abbotsford celebrations The Abbotsford community of Mt. Lehman hosts a parade and celebration preceding the main City of Abbotsford parade on Monday, July 1.

A pancake breakfast is served at Mt. Lehman Community Hall (6418 Mt. Lehman Rd.), starting at 8:30 a.m.

The parade starts at 9:30 a.m. from the Mt. Lehman Credit Union (5889 Mt. Lehman Rd.).

Mt. Lehman Road will be closed to traffic from 9 to 10 a.m. between Harris and Taylor roads (north/ south) and from Ross and Taylor roads (east/west).

Cake and festivities will follow at the hall.

Those who would like to participate in the parade by driving their car, motorcycle, tractor, bicycle or float or by walking or rollerblading are asked to meet at the credit union at 9 a.m.

Historic sites to visit in Canada

Every year on July 1, Canadians across the globe celebrate Canada Day. Canada Day celebrates the anniversary of July 1, 1867, when the Province of Canada, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, until then separate colonies, officially became a single dominion within the British Empire. This dominion was called “Canada.”

The British North America Act, 1867 (now referred to as the Constitution Act, 1867) officially created the dominion of Canada, but the history of the Great White North extends much further back than the 1860s. In fact, when visiting Canada, travelers can immerse themselves in history by visiting various historical sites that can provide wonderful insight into this vast, beautiful country. n L’Anse aux Meadows: Located at the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula of the island of Newfoundland.

Designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1978. n La Citadelle: This 19th century fort was the biggest built by the British in North America. The oldest military building in Canada, La Citadelle was initially intended to secure Quebec City against the Americans and serve as a refuge for garrisoned British soldiers in the event of an attack or rebellion. n Kejimkujik National Park: Canada’s national parks are renowned among nature lovers across the globe, and many of those parks, including Kejimkujik National Park in Nova Scotia. n Sainte-Marie among the Hurons: The first European settlement in what is now the province of Ontario.

Coping with an empty nest

Many people find it rewarding to start a family and raise children. Watching kids grow through the years and sharing in their experiences can bring life to a household.

Mothers spend 18 years or more devoted to their children, and often their identities are defined as “Mom” above all else.

As a result, it can be difficult to think ahead to life without kids in the home, especially when children are toddlers or school-aged. But children will someday grow up and move out, and the emotions that resonate when that day comes can be overwhelming.

Many parents feel a sense of sadness and loss when their last child leaves the family home. Referred to as “empty nest syndrome,” these feelings are not officially labeled as a clinical mental health issue, but they are very real for many people. While parents encourage their children to become independent and branch out in their own lives, not every parent can cope with an empty nest. The parenting and family resource Verywell Family states that mothers with empty nest syndrome experience a deep void in their lives that oftentimes

The facts about osteoporosis Osteoporosis is often seen as a problem for the elderly, and the National Osteoporosis Foundation notes that being over 50 is a major risk factor for osteoporosis. But that doesn’t mean people younger than 50 can’t develop the disease. The misconception that osteoporosis exclusively afflicts aging men and women only highlights the need to learn more about the disease.

What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones that occurs when the body loses too much bone, makes too little bone, or both. Because people cannot feel their bones weakening, osteoporosis is often called a “silent disease,� notes the NOF. Despite its silence, osteoporosis is a serious threat, increasing a person’s risk for bone breaks from falls.

What happens to bones when a person has osteoporosis?

The NOF notes that, under a microscope, healthy bones look like a honeycomb. When a person has osteoporosis, the holes and spaces in the honeycomb are considerably larger than in healthy bones. Osteoporotic bones are not as dense as healthy bones, and as they become less dense, they weaken and are more susceptible to breaks.

Osteoporosis is common across the globe. According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation, one in three women over age 50 and one in five men over age 50 will experience osteoporotic fractures.

What are the risk factors for osteoporosis?

The NOF categorizes risk factors for osteoporosis as uncontrollable and controllable. Uncontrollable risk factors include age, family history, low body weight (being small and thin), and a history of broken bones. Gender also is an uncontrollable risk factor, as women are more likely than men to suffer from osteoporosis. In fact, the NOF notes that a woman’s risk of breaking a hip due to osteoporosis is equal to her risk of breast, ovarian and uterine cancer.

Controllable risk factors for osteoporosis include not eating enough fruits and vegetables; consuming too much protein, sodium and caffeine; a sedentary lifestyle; smoking; and excessive consumption of alcohol. Insufficient calcium and vitamin D intake is another controllable risk factor for osteoporosis. Speak with a physician about osteoporosis and the role that diet and exercise can play in prevention.

Natural solutions for going grey with style

Grey hair is a natural side effect of aging. The rate at which hair will turn to grey differs based on genetics and other factors.

Some people may go grey seemingly overnight, while others may grey at the temples first before the rest of their hair gradually changes color.

Aging women often wonder if they should cover up their grey hair or embrace the silver. Going grey is no longer something that has women running to their stylists at the sight of the first grey strand.

Some actually opt for silver even before their own gray sets in. According to a 2017 survey of hair trends by L’Oréal Professional, 28 per cent of women embraced or

There are many natural ingredients that can add tint to hair to make grey less visible.

Coffee, for example, can cover grays and add dimension to dark tresses. Chamomile tea is recommended for blonds to add natural highlights and perhaps camouflage their grays. Calendula, marigold, rosehips, and hibiscus can deepen red shades or add some subtle red highlights.

Henna also is a popular natural method to add a red-orange color to hair.

Creating highlights to offset grey hair can work as well.

Spraying lemon juice on hair and sitting in the sun can produce lightening effects.

Celebration of Learning honours English language learners

Awards ceremony held by Archway Community Services More than 250 English language learners attended the second annual Celebration of Learning awards ceremony on June 12 at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium.

The adult students are a part of the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) or Access2English programs at Archway Community Services (formerly Abbotsford Community Services).

The LINC program provides free English classes, as well as information about local communities, employment and Canadian culture.

The Access2English program matches adult learners in the community with volunteer tutors who teach literacy, oral communication, computer skills and more.

“It’s a small community where people from all walks of life and cultural backgrounds become friends who support and encourage one another,” she said.

“The classes help foster a sense of belonging and encourage our students to become valuable members of our community.”

Archway has been offering adult English classes to newcomers for over 25 years.

In addition to language classes, the Multicultural and Immigrant Integration Services department connects newcomers to the wider community in a variety of ways.

Settlement workers give guidance to adults and help integrate immigrant and refugee children into schools.

There are also specialized employment services to help skilled immigrants find relevant work in the local workforce.

Most of us have attended Dasmesh Punjabi School since Kindergarten.

We walked into this school 13 years ago, looking for some toys to play with, friends to talk to, and teachers to guide us. Over the years, these toys turned into textbooks, friends turned into family, and teachers became our biggest supporters. School no longer felt like a simple educational institute.

Rather, it felt like home, a place where we would always feel loved and cared for. We were given endless opportunities to practice our religion, to partake in academic and athletic competitions, and to develop a strong character. We spent the last 13 years making endless memories together and high school will not be the end of it. This school has taught us to always support each other and celebrate every milestone together.

Walking out today, I can proudly say this school has given us a lot more than what we were looking for. It provided us with exceptional education, a loving family, and caring mentors. We will definitely miss being here, but we are excited to see all the great opportunities the future holds for us.

Crystal Gala Foundation donates $725,000 for mammography machine The Crystal Gala Foundation recently donated the balance of funds that it had dedicated towards a new diagnostic mammography machine for Abbotsford Regional Hospital.

The foundation, which organizes and hosts the annual Crystal Gala every October, had a goal in 2018 to purchase the $725,000 machine, which includes a stereotactic biopsy unit.

The first half of the funds – $362,000 – was donated in April 2018. The balance was raised at the last Crystal Gala and through other fundraising.

The last portion of that – just

over $60,000 – was turned over to the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation on June 6.

The unit has now been ordered and might be delivered by the end of this year.

The volunteer-driven Crystal Gala Foundation has raised $2.7 million since 1999.

The funds go towards purchasing equipment and technology for the detection and treatment of breast cancer.

The 2019 Crystal Gala takes place Oct. 26 at Tradex. This year’s theme is Disco. Visit crystalgala.ca for tickets and more information.

Abbotsford Storm U16 win Surrey SX Cup U16 soccer club wins all four games to earn gold at South Surrey event

The Abbotsford Storm U16 Division One boys team ended the year off on a high point at the SX Surrey Spring Cup in South Surrey last weekend.

The Storm took home gold by winning all four of its games en route to the title.

Abbotsford beat the Surrey United Soccer Club Red Devils 1-0 to open the tournament on Saturday, and then followed that up with a 5-0 win over the Coquitlam Metro-Ford Eagles later that day.

The wins continued on Sunday, as the Storm again beat the Eagles 4-1 and then clinched gold with a 3-2 win over the Red Devils.

Abbotsford’s Max Park led the offensive charge with four goals in the tournament, with Thomas Janzen and Alex Ksinan both adding two. Others who scored at the event included: Woody Russenberger, Jamie Klassen, Zach Dyck and Leo Haladin. Team officials also praised the play of goalkeeper Riley Richardson, who allowed just three goals in the four games.

The win at the spring event was preceded by another gold in the SX Surrey Fall Cup in the fall, as well as pair of golds and one silver in three other local tournaments.

The Abbotsford Olympians Swim Club wrapped up the 201819 season with good results at the club’s intra-club meet at Walnut Grove on June 15.

Swimmers from the AOSC competed against its sister club, the Langley Olympians, with approximately 115 swimmers hitting the pool.

Abbotsford’s Brooklynn Geisser (8) was the top local finisher, as she placed first in the 50 metres freestyle with a time of 1:02.49, the 100m freestyle with a time of 2:23.37 and in the 50m backstroke with a time of 1:04.21. She also placed second in the 100m individual medley with a time of 2:37.63.

Sarah Wooffinden (14) placed third in the 200m individual medley with a best time of 3:29.98.

Two swimmers also achieved their Lower Mainland Regional Time – a time of 4:00 or faster in the 200m individual medley which allows them to compete in national-level swim meets. Mia

Gill (14) achieved hers with a time of 3:50.55, and Mateo Figueredo also achieved his with a time of 3:56.23.

“This has been a great season for the AOSC,” stated head coach Zachary Haw in a press release.

“We have had a record number of membership in the club as well as participation from the members.

We started off the season with one regional qualifier, and now have five of them. This shows the great work that the swimmers have placed in committing and dedicating to the sport.”

The Langley and Abbotsford Olympians Swim Club will be offering July swimming at the Walnut Grove pool this summer, with programs available for swimmers four to 18 years if age. Cardinals ride 4-game win streak Senior ball club’s pitching and defence leading to victories

The Fraser Valley Cardinals senior team caught fire this weekend, winning three of four games they played this weekend and then added another big win on Tuesday.

The Cards pitching and defence have been big keys in the four-game winning streak, with the club posting shutouts in three of those four wins.

But the weekend didn’t get off to a great start for the seniors, as they opened Saturday’s doubleheader against the Victoria Eagles with an 11-3 loss.

All the damage came in the fifth inning, when the Eagles scored a mind-boggling 11 runs to earn the win. The Cards committed three errors, but both Kayden Beauregard and Aidan Koetsier had solid games with two hits apiece.

The teams locked horns again later that day at DeLair Park, with the Cards posting a 1-0 win. Fraser Valley scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Trey Smith drove in the lone run. Smith, Beauregard and David Draayers all recorded two hits.

Fraser Valley continued the strong play in game two against the Chiefs, posting a 3-2 win. The Cardinals scored runs in the first and third inning to cruise to the victory. Romero Snow was the top performer for the Cards, with two RBI’s. Starting pitcher Patrick Tangen allowed just one run and one hit in five innings for the win, Kim picked up the save.

The seniors then hosted the White Rock Tritons on Tuesday, and earned a 3-0 win. Starting

pitcher Micah Bucknam was excellent, allowing just three hits over seven innings. Smith and Yahiro recorded RBI’s.

The Cardinals record moves to 22-13 after the games, and the club sits in fifth place in the British Columbia Premier Baseball League.

The club’s next home games occur on Sunday, when the Mid Island Pirates come to town for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

GLUKLER Hannelore Margarethe (nee Rubner, Bachmayer) “The Cat Whisperer�~ Born March 17 1941 Hannah’s sun has set on May 8th, 2019 With heavy hearts we announce her sudden and tragic passing.

Hannah leaves behind her beloved brother Gerhard Bachmayer (Ping), daughters Bianca Wright and Denise Rubner (Mike), son Garrett Rubner (Krista), special nieces & nephews, grandchildren and their spouses, a great grandson, many adopted family members and friends.

To know Hannah was to love Hannah, you were always accepted, she opened her home to all, and wished everyone the power to achieve success. Hannah was an amazing daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her vast accomplishments include; artist, author, poet, animal lover, counselor and friend. She fostered endless connections and, of course, endless friendships.

PETERSON Bernice August 1, 1921 ~ June 8, 2019 Bernice passed away peacefully on June 8th at age 97 after a brief illness.

She is lovingly survived by her husband John of 63 years, sons Roy (Bonnie), Leonard (Chris), daughters Sharon (Arne) and Carol as well as several treasured grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Bernice is predeceased by her parents, Roscoe and Jesse, sisters Mary and Ruth and brother Joe. Bernice was born in Great Falls, Montana.

She lived several places in Montana and Washington state when her parents worked for the Salvation Army. She later lived on a farm in Nebraska during the depression, then moving to Denver, then Boston during WW2. Bernice graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cascade College in Portland, Oregon in 1949. She worked in Juneau, Alaska for Federal Housing and later taught 3rd and 4th grades in Nenana, Alaska where she met her future husband John whom was working construction at the time. They moved to British Columbia shortly after and proudly became Canadian citizens. The family operated forestry and agriculture businesses in Vanderhoof, Prince George, Dawson Creek and Fort Nelson, later retiring in Abbotsford in 1988.

At her request, there will be no service, but there will be a Celebration of Life at a later date.

A special thanks to staff and volunteers from the Holmberg House Hospice for the tender care given to Bernice in her final days.

She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.

GOSSEN, Ernest Leonard (Len) FILUK Sonia (Sophie) August 10, 1934 – June 20, 2019 Sonia Filuk passed away at Abbotsford General Hospital on Thursday, June 20th surrounded by family. She is reunited with her husband, Alex, and family who have gone before into the eternal rest of heaven.

Sonia, (nee Kadun) was born on the family farm and the birth was registered at Minitonas, Manitoba. She was the first daughter born to Jacob and Nadia Kadun and raised during the Depression and the war years on a prairie farm. As the daughter of Ukrainian immigrants, she was expected to help on the farm and learn the skills of running a household. Her schooling was in the typical one room school house common on the prairies and she went on to attend high school in Minitonas. Though the winters were long and cold and there was always work to be done, mom talked about the fun social times, school, friendships and visits with family and friends. A special opportunity was attending St. Andrew’s Ukrainian College in Winnipeg for a summer during high school. Alex and Sonia were married in November 1950, in Swan River, Manitoba where they lived until moving to British Columbia.

Alex and Sonia moved to the Fraser Valley in 1973. Sonia attended and volunteered at the Seven Oaks Alliance Church; taught ESL classes; and attended Christian Women’s functions. Dad and Mom moved into the Garden Park Towers in their retirement years where they enjoyed meeting new friends. Mom volunteered at “Helping Hands.�

Sonia was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Alexander Filuk, in March 2018. She was also predeceased by her parents, her brothers Alex and Wes, and members of a large extended family.

She is survived by her daughters, Elaine McVie, Pattie (Ulli) Onsorge, Grace (Bob) Dyck and Debbie (John) Aarts; her grandchildren, their spouses, and her great-grandchildren. Mom remembered birthdays and enjoyed attending the great-grandchildren’s activities. She appreciated the phone calls and visits from her grandchildren; Andrew (Courtney) McVie, Alison (Brad) Hummel, Dustin Hicks (Jean Mccallister), Charlie Hicks (Nick) James, Jordan (Angela) Dyck, Josh (Nikki) Dyck, Amanda (Travis) Dyck, Jacqueline (Richard) Boer, Jonathan (Mandy) Aarts, Jesse Aarts, Jacob (Nina) Aarts. Mom enjoyed getting to know and being part of the lives of her eighteen greatgrandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Marie Filuk, and many sisters-in law, brothers-inlaw, nieces and nephews with whom she stayed in touch.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Abbotsford General Hospital, Dr. Newton, and the residents of Garden Park Towers who supported mom in her final days.

The funeral will take place on Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at 1:00 PM at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hart Ministries, 106-90 Freeport Blvd. NE, Calgary, AB T3J 5J9 are appreciated.

It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of Len. He was my husband and my best friend as well as a father, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend.

Len lived life to the fullest He was an avid music lover, he had a passion for travelling, playing bridge, reading, going to the theatre, cooking, exercising with friends at the rec centre and, most of all, sharing time with family and friends.

Len started his working career in the grocery business rising to the level of store manager with Super Valu. In his 30’s he bought the Red Baron Restaurant at the Abbotsford Airport where he and his wonderful staff served many fine meals over a period of twenty years before closing the restaurant and retiring.

Len will forever be missed by his wife, Sheila, his daughter, Laura (Tom) Niebuhr, his sons, Chris (Veronica), Mike (Kathrine), and Darren as well as grandchildren Tonya, Natasha, Emily, Serena, Jared, Claire, Bryce, Erik, Zoe and Vance and ten great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Viola Kiess, brother-in-law, Jim Boyd ([Martha) , sister-in-law, Ann Hanowell, brothersin-law, William Ho and Don Harvey as well as many wonderful nieces, nephews and cousins.

Len was predeceased by his son, Kevin, his parents, Henry and Elizabeth, his sisters, Elvera and Herta, and his nephew, Glenn.

Len will be remembered by all for always being ready to help others and for his cheerful, upbeat personality. He was such a good friend to all.

There will be a tea of remembrance on Sunday, July 7th from one in the afternoon until four. It will be held at 15525 36B Avenue in Surrey.

Rarely does a day go by without the littlest of things causing me pause, to wonder why I was so lucky to have you by my side.Together for 75 years, we married June 22nd, 1957.

Making this month so heart wrenching is that it mirrors our marriage year. Things happened during our years together that perhaps shouldn’t have, but not once did we let it ruin what we had, something so special if felt like it was our very own, an “Everlasting Love� nothing could destroy.

Wanting to be there for our 61st Anniversary and her 84th birthday, June shook off two heart attacks doctors said she wouldn’t survive, summoning up the strength to stay just a little while longer.

On June 29th, 2018, I kissed goodbye to this shadow of a woman I had nursed, and saw through her last hours in this world. But always remember my Love, we will meet again someday.

You are sorely missed by your loving husband George, daughter Jane (Bill), sons Ian (Shelley) and Andrew, sister Barbara, many grand and great grandchildren and predeceased by daughter Laura (Daniel).
