Over $1 million reallocated for intersection upgrades

Sylvan Lake Town Council has approved the reallocation of over $1 million to upgrade the intersection at Hwy 20 and Erickson Drive.

Council had previously budgeted $1,255,000 for the project.

The additional $1,145,010 will be reallocated from the Street Rehabilitation Program and transportation offsite reserves.

The additional funds would cover costs associated with Fortis as well as a 10 per cent contingency.

The intersection, made popular by Tim Horton’s on the corner and many industrial businesses located on Erickson Drive, tends to become congested easily.

Town staff noted vehicles travelling on Hwy 20 ignore signs telling motorists not to pass vehicles on the right at the intersection, while vehicles exiting onto Hwy 20 have difficulties merging.

The Town worked with McElhanney Engineering to determine how best to improve the intersection.

“After performing a traffic warrant study, and consulting with Alberta Transportation and the Town of Sylvan Lake it was decided that a single

lane roundabout treatment, with the ability to be expanded into a two lane roundabout, was the preferred option for upgrading the intersection,” Project Manager Eric Boudreau said at the council meeting.

A detailed design was presented to Alberta Transportation in early 2019 and staff were then told the intersection must have a 40 year lifespan.

“This late requirement from AT pushed the tendering of the project out by three months and significantly increased the project cost from the estimated $1,255,000 to the tender price of $1,914,801.00,

a difference of $660,000,” said Boudreau.

Council awarded the project to Pidherney’s Inc. from Blackfalds who claim to be able to complete the project within 90 work days.

In order to do so, Pidherney’s requested to work through the night on the project, saying the more complicated construction items will be less likely to disturb traffic patterns in the night.

“The total project of $2,400,000 includes $1,914,801 for tendered project costs; $215,000 engineering fees; $50,000 Fortis costs; and $217,980 as contingency,” the council package states.

The reallocation of funds for the intersection will disrupt other projects planned for Sylvan Lake.

Namely, the Town will be unable to repair Willow Springs Crescent this construction season. Boudreau says the repairs to the crescent

will be delayed until 2020.

The Town will still be able to modify the intersection at Hwy 20 and Herder Drive, pending approval from Alberta Transportation. Minor street repairs in Hewlett Park and other areas in town will still be completed.

CAO Wally Ferris said in the council package that future construction projects will have the budgeting process adjusted to accommodate the higher costs associated with the new standards Alberta Transportation is looking for.

We all get by with just a little help from our friends The celebration of our great country of Canada is waiting in the wings just ready to spring into the limelight.

And then there are the fireworks that usually cap the celebrations off.

I am fortunate enough to be able to view the fireworks from my deck which gives me a great excuse to invite tons of family and friends and have a party.

Sometimes we even watch the fireworks.

They love backyard barbecues and hanging out with friends.

They eat pizza and drink beer and tell each other to ‘have a good day, eh’ They are also known as being friendly and walking the extra mile for their neighbour.

These are all admirable traits and, for the most part, are definitely characteristics that can be attributed to lots of the good people who live in this bountiful country of ours.

But, it is so easy to forget that even for us who live in this land of plenty, there are those of us who are less fortunate in ways we don’t really think about.

And, those people just like the rest of us, will get by for sure.

But they would get by even better with just a little help from a friend, or at least a stranger, who could become a friend.

Reflecting On My High School Experience High school is known for many things. Friendship, fun, youthful adventures; stress, tests, piles of homework; sports, music, extracurriculars; and much, much more.

High school is a time for forming friendships, life, make the most of your time there by taking part in anything and everything you can, and pursuing passions, and learning about hard work and other life lessons, in addition to just learning the curriculum.

Above all else, though, high school is a time for discovering who you are, who you want to be, and bridging the gap between the two.

Between the first day of Grade 9 and the last day of Grade 12, students go from carefree children, dreaming about the faraway future, to full-grown adults, actively chasing their dreams and goals. When I reflect back to the beginning of Grade 9, I remember feeling unsure of exactly who I was and what my purpose was supposed to be.

Forget about finding my place in the world - I wasn’t even sure what my place in the school was yet. However, the more and more time I spent in the school, the more I realized that the high school experience is not created by high school - it’s created by you. If you seize opp or tu n it i e s whenever they arise, and create your own opportunities too, your high school experience - and your life - will be filled with amazing memories, exciting stories, and the satisfaction of knowing you accomplished great things.

Rather than just routinely going through school, work, or making a difference wherever you are. If you see something you want to change, don’t complacently wait for it to change by itself - make the decision to step up and fix it, and chances are, changing it will be much easier than you think.

One of the things I love most about H.J. Cody, as well as one of the most important lessons I have learned in my time here, is that change is easy to affect once you have set your mind to it. CODY SCHOOL community, or simply beautifying the school to add more cheer to the hallways, change is always achievable and usually even encouraged, especially at H.J. Cody.

However, you do not have to create huge projects to have a fun and fulfilling high school experience; taking part in activities and opportunities as they arise is key to having an exciting and satisfying time at school, or anywhere else. Taking a leap of faith and participating in the

Quebec exchange, even though I do not speak French, was an incredible experience that gave me lifelong memories and lifelong friends.

Participating in clubs outside of my comfort zone, like competing in a trivia tournament and in creative writing competitions, gave my days so much excitement and variety.

Mentoring local kids in the community and volunteering at town events gave me an incredible sense of fulfillment, and usually some pizza, too.

Most importantly, through four years of taking and creating opportunities, I not only had wonderful experiences, but I also gained more insight into both who I am and who I want to be.

As my peers and I now progress into the next stages of our lives, I reflect on how grateful I am to have grown into the truest version of myself I have yet discovered. I walked into H.J. Cody an unsure child, and I walked out a confident young woman, excited about

the next chapter of my journey and determined to succeed. H.J. Cody, the chrysalis to all of our metamorphoses, helped us all to discover our individual purpose, and each of our unique places in the world.

H.J. Cody has amazing staff who do not only want to see you succeed, but they also want to see you pursue your passions, chase your dreams, and simply be happy. Anyone who criticizes H.J. for lacking in opportunity must have never truly dove into what the school has to offer before, because H.J. Cody has more opportunities than you could dream of - you just have to take them. Even if there was something that needed to be changed or created, H.J. will not only allow you to change or create it, they will help you.

Stepping into the next chapter of my life, I feel prepared, excited, and most of all grateful for the absolutely incredible high school experience I was fortunate enough to have here at H.J. Cody.

Summer Reading Program kicks-off with a party

The Summer Reading Program has begun for young readers, with June 22’s kick-off party.

Residents poured into the Sylvan Lake Municipal Library to take part in the fun and also sign-up for the program which will run throughout the summer months.

Once participants registered for the program they were given a scavenger hunt, which included finding a flower and a ladybug.

Those who came out to the kick-off party had a number of fun games and activities to take part in, like the giant sized game of snakes and ladders.

Because this year’s theme is natural wonders, participants were given a sneak peek on what they might be doing this summer when they planted a small seed to take home.

This summer Alicia Daniels, Summer Reading Program coordinator, hopes to have the participants learn about plants and gardening by attending the community garden located at the library.

Participants in the program are encouraged to read throughout the summer, and may even win a prize for doing so.

Beverly Smith graduated with a Bachelor of Environmental Studies (BES) from the University of Waterloo and started off a rewarding career in resource management and municipal/provincial government, back in the mid ‘70s.

After working for the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Napanee Conservation Authority in Ontario she moved to Alberta in 1981 to work as a planner for Kananaskis Country as part of what was then Alberta Forestry and Natural Resources. After getting married (Anderson), she moved to Rocky Mountain House with her spouse and worked at a variety of jobs: as an instructor at Red Deer College, as an interpreter at the Rocky Mountain House National Historic Site, and later as the Tourism Director for Rocky Mountain House and Clearwater Country.

Then in 1989, she secured a job as Senior Manager, with Alberta Environmental Protection as the Regional Resource Coordinator for the Eastern Slopes Region.

She later moved to take on the same position for the Parkland Region and obtained her Masters Degree in Project Management. During this busy time, along with raising two amazing daughters, she was elected onto Summer Village

Beverly Smith of Norglenwold’s Council as Mayor and later Deputy Mayor and served that community for 13 years.

Beverly’s last employments were in the position as Executive Director, first for the Red Deer River Watershed Planning and Advisory Council (RDRWA) and for the last seven years as the Executive Director of the Association of Summer Villages of Alberta (ASVA).

In 2013, Beverly was the recipient of the Red Deer and District - Women of Excellence Award for Environment.

Beverly looks back on her past career, with its major challenges and rewards, with absolute pride.

Lacombe man to be in national Canadian Tire commercial

A Lacombe resident will be recognized Canada-wide after a Canadian Tire national advertising campaign featuring him comes out this fall.

Sam Donahue, a truck driver from BAMMS Contracting and Lacombe resident for the last three years, recently filmed the commercial in Toronto.

“The campaign is called ‘Tested for Life in Canada’ and it is a campaign that Canadian Tire has had for a few years,” Donahue said. “I signed up a couple years ago to part of a survey panel answering questions on brand recognition and also what my preference on the brands Canadian Tire offers.

“Last fall, they sent me a Mastercraft cordless drill to test out and review. I did that and they contacted me and told me to keep the drills and thanked me for the review.”

Donahue thought his experience with Canadian Tire was over until February of this year when they contacted him again asking if he would like to take part in a commercial on the product. Donahue jumped at the chance and flew into Toronto — all expenses paid for five days — to film the commercial.

“They are in the process of putting it all together. It will run in the fall and it will feature me — I will probably be in it for all of five seconds but it will be me,” he said.

Donahue said he doesn’t typically look to be the center of attention, so being in a national commercial was a little out of

his comfort zone.

“Being on the TV set with the director and everyone, it was a little interesting because it was outside my comfort zone but also pretty exciting at the same time,” he said.

Donahue was happy to be able to represent Canadian Tire — a brand he has supported since he bought his first tool set when he was a young teenager.

“I probably still have some of the tools laying around. It is neat to be part of the iconic store and I see it as a bit of thank you for all the years of supporting them,” he said.

Representing his adopted home in Lacombe is something Donahue is proud of.

“I have been working in Lacombe for three years and I absolutely love the community,” he said. “When they run this commercial, it will say my name from Lacombe. It is neat to represent a community I really enjoy living in.

“It is a shame we don’t have a Canadian Tire here yet, but people will see Lacombe on the commercials.”

Donahue said it was the experience of a lifetime to take part in the ad.

“Canadian Tire really treated me well with the all-expense paid trip to Toronto and I was there for five days,” he said. “It was neat to see the behind the scenes experience. You see the commercials on TV and you don’t realize the amount of people, work and money involved.

“It was a fantastic experience from start to finish and I am looking forward to seeing what the finished product looks like in the fall.”

We mark the passage of time in many ways. The lectionary calendar by my desk marks out the church year. Days, weeks and months pass with the turn of a page.

The clock on the wall assiduously measures out the seconds, minutes and hours in seemingly endless rotation. The wristwatch has been all but replaced by the cell phone as the personal timepiece of choice. With it, the second is not small enough to mark but at the mere touch of a fingertip, time in hundredths of a second blurs past.

It is a conundrum that with our ability to consider the eternal, the timeless, we should be so exercised and so circumscribed by fleeting time. And yet, so pushed by our

seeming lack of it. So how can we add more time into our busy day, how can we escape this tyranny of the timepiece? In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus gives us the antidote to this insidious, persistent malady.

‘Don’t be anxious about tomorrow’ is the wisdom; a wisdom that at first glance seems counterintuitive. Yet in taking our thoughts (read worries) from tomorrow and relying on the promise of our faith being more than sufficient for today, we can get relief from the inexorable demands of the clock and the calendar. ‘Don’t worry’, Jesus says, and He really means it.

Morse’s first step into the world of hairdressing was as a shampoo girl at a salon in a mall in Sherwood Park 40 years ago.

“These moments just only happen once in a lifetime, so you have to cherish them [and] grab them while you can,” said Morse of the 40 Year Anniversary celebration she hosted at the Sylvan Lake Seniors Lodge. “I just keep saying ‘wow’ I don’t know how else to explain it.”

The event featured live music from local artist Randi Boulton, snacks and refreshments, as well as a speech from the guest of honour.

The Red Hatters were also present to help escort guests

to their seats.

Morse is centred in the Sylvan Lake Seniors Lodge, but also cuts the hair of residents at Bethany Sylvan Lake and the Sylvan Lake Manor.

She has been located at the lodge for nearly 20 years and says she has found her path.

Morse says she loves being with the seniors as they teach her about patience, humour and that they have more time than money.

“They’ve taught me so much and you can’t learn that in school, you can’t learn it in a book, but they make my day,” explained Morse. “They just make you feel that you’re doing a good job, that you’re doing a good service and it just makes your day.”

Morse said being a hairdresser at the lodge has so much more going on behind the scenes.

She works with senior clients who have disabilities, Alzheimer’s, dementia, as well as walkers, wheelchairs and canes.

Morse explained she provides support for them on an emotional level to help them get through difficult stages in life, for example, doing a clients hair before they move into hospice care or getting their hair done to look good for a driver’s exam.

She added her clients need to be heard as they are going through challenges everyday and she is there for them outside of making sure their eyebrows are even or putting a flower in their hair.

“All of my senior clientele in the lodge, Bethany and manor are worth all the expertise and personal pampering that I can give them,” continued Morse.

Morse said a lot of people don’t know she is at the lodge, but wanted the celebration to be a time where she can shine and show everyone how happy she is to do her job.

“I’m just kind of overwhelmed right now, I truly am… it’s an emotional time for me,” Morse said.

Although she has been in the industry for 40 years she does not plan on stopping anytime soon, with a 50 years of hairdressing party possible for the future.

Sylvan Celebrates Canada Day!

Sylvan Lake has a full day of events lined up to celebrate Canada’s birthday on July 1.

There is a little something for everyone at Sylvan Lake’s Canada Day Celebrations, from family fun activities to hypnosis shows to fireworks.

Events to celebrate the nation start early at 10 a.m. and run all day with the last event taking place around 11 p.m.

Like in year’s past, the Town is joining forces with the Rotary Club of Sylvan Lake to bring fun activities, such as the free family activities held on the pier and along Lakeshore Drive.

Families can bounce along in bouncy castles, participate in a scavenger hunt, get a balloon animal or their face painted from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the festivities.

Feel the stress of the last six months dissipate as students from MaKami College set up along Lakeshore Drive giving free massages.

Entertainment for the day will be in the form of Indigenous performances and activities.

Every year Sylvan Lake is joined by a pipe band and Colour Guard for the Flag Raising Ceremony and the March of Canadians.

Starting at 2 p.m. at the Municipal Government Building, a special ceremony will begin where the Canadian flag is raised and it will be followed by the March of Canadians from the Municipal Government Building to the pier.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to wear red and white for Canada Day and join in the march to show your love for your nation.

Following the March of Canadian, those present will join together to sing “Happy Birthday” to Canada.

And, what birthday party would be complete without a piece of cake?

The day is rounded out with one last celebration as the sun sets.

Fireworks will light up the night sky, and residents can watch from around the lake or on a boat in the water.

Adopted woman discovers biological roots in Sylvan Lake

Mielnichuk says she had always felt connected to Sylvan Lake even before learning about the family ties, but now she also feels connected to both her Miller roots as well as her adoptive family’s.

“My adoptive family has never treated me any different… I was always the sister, the niece, the granddaughter,” said Mielnichuk, who refers to herself as a “chosen child.”

“I do really feel connected with the Miller roots, I really do, especially now living here…

much more than my Ukrainian roots,” she continued.

Mielnichuk says she never thought she would find them “in a million years” with a name like Miller, adding the discovery came at the perfect time.

Within the last year she has been diagnosed with liver cancer and put on the transplant list.

“All of this has just come at the best of time for me, like the support, it’s just been awesome and it’s just amazing to me how things worked out the way I needed them too,” explained Mielnichuk. “Not that many people get that in life and I

think I’m really fortunate.

Her message to other adoptees who are searching is to persevere and keep looking.

“If they’re looking I don’t want them giving up, I want them to keep looking no matter what,” said Mielnichuk. “Just even if they don’t find anybody [and] just get a little bit of information, it kind of gives you a place.”

A long-time Sylvan Lake resident has recently discovered she has deep roots tied into the town.

Corinne Mielnichuk, 53, is an adopted child who had looked for her birth family her entire life.

Miller and if you look in 1967 in the phone book in Edmonton there’s another phone book inside the phone book of Miller’s,” said Mielnichuk of her search.

After moving from Edmonton to Sylvan Lake in her 20’s she kept looking, and when her daughter became of age they started looking together.

Young hockey player says ‘challenges won’t define her’

Girls are just as strong and capable as boys.

That is the message one young Sylvan Lake girl is presenting with a recent photo shoot.

Dressed up in blue and pink dresses, with full tulle skirts and flower crowns, nine-year-old Hailey McWhirter is subverting the norm by also showcasing her love of hockey.

The typical “girly” items of clothing are offset

by Hailey tying up her hockey skates, proudly showing off her stick or holding a sparkly tiara in hockey-gloved hands.

“I am a hockey player… I want everyone to know girls can play hockey too,” Hailey said.

Deanna Stefaniuk-McWhirter, Hailey’s mother, said the photo shoot was all about Hailey and she choose everything she wanted to wear as well as how she wanted to pose.

“Everything was her decision, and that was important because we wanted this to be about her, it was all Hailey,” Deanna said.

The idea for the photo shoot was even Hailey’s idea, one that when presented Deanna and her husband were immediately on board.

The idea came from a similar shoot of an athlete in the United States Hailey found while surfing the web one day.

“I want to show other girls they can do anything,” said Hailey, who added one of her dreams is to play in the NHL for her favourite team the Edmonton Oilers.

Hailey says she is grateful to everyone who has influenced her and helped her along the way. In particular she said her novice coach Brett Johnson has had a big impact on her.

“He has been very encouraging to me,” Hailey said, adding she wants to encourage others as well.

Johnson says he has been “blessed” to coach many young athletes and remembers each one, but knew Hailey was special.

“This young lady is one for who I was lucky enough to coach in her very first year in hockey.

From the first time she stepped on the ice, you just knew that the ice was going to be her playground.

“She’s got a heart of gold and a ton of passion,” Johnson said.

Along with her coach, Hailey says her best friend, Mackenzie, has always been by her side and her other best friend Rylan Johnson sends her words of encouragement all the time.

Once she has finished her stint in the NHL, Hailey plans to become a doctor. Specifically she plans to become a brain surgeon and help find a cure for Alzheimer’s.

“It’s sad to watch people forget, I want to help people not forget,” she said.

“There are two things she always said she wanted, to play hockey and to be a doctor,” said Deanna.

Her journey to the NHL and to medical school became harder last year when she was diagnosed with transient tic disorder, a form of Tourettes.

Deanna said she noticed her mannerisms changed, and began shaking or moving her hand a certain way or rolling her eyes.

These symptoms became more and more prominent before she was taken into the emergency room and given an MRI. “Her ticks come and go,” said Deanna. “They may last a few days or weeks and then be gone for months.”

Deanna says Hailey has been strong during this time, and hasn’t lost sight of her goals.

“She told me, ‘Don’t worry Mommy, I’m going to be ok.’”

A bright spot for both Hailey and Deanna was in speaking with doctors about the condition and what it could mean for Hailey in the future.

The doctor told Hailey he knew of other doctors with Tourettes, and it hasn’t stopped them from achieving their goals.

“It was really encouraging,” Hailey said about her conversation with the doctor, “I was encouraged that I wasn’t the only one with it.”

Hailey says she hopes her story and the photos show other people, other girls, that they can do anything.

“I don’t let my challenges define me.”

The photo shoot was Hailey’s idea, after she found a similar set of photos while searching the internet. She says she wanted to do the photos because she wants to show other girls they can do anything they want, including playing hockey.

Bantam Buccaneers fall in playoffs

The Sylvan Lake bantam Buccs battled it out with the Olds Stingers over the weekend in the quarter final series of the league playoffs.

The Buccaneers had to win the two games to move on to the semi-finals, however they fell in both games against the Stingers.

In Game One of the series on June 21, the

Buccaneers hosted the Stingers and lost 10-3.

The home team kept it tight in the first period of the game, with the Stingers leading by only one point.

Jesse Sooley, from Hudson Little, scored the first goal of the game for the Buccs at 7:12 in the first period.

Unfortunately the Buccaneers couldn’t keep up in the final two periods, scoring only twice more in the final frame of the game.

The rematch on June 22 was nearly a mirror

image of the previous night’s game.

The Stingers, back on their home turf, quickly scored two points in the first period, leaving the Buccaneers to score once.

Tom Schallwyk scored at 9:30 off a feed from Sooley to put the Buccaneers on the board.

The middle frame saw the Stingers once again take off, scoring a total of five times, without leaving room for the Buccaneers to find the back of the net.

In the final period of the series, The Buccaneers

picked up the pace defensively, and kept the Stingers from adding to their score.

On the offensive, the Buccaneers added one more to their score when Landyn Sigfusson scored seconds into the period, with an assist going to Avery Weik.

The two-game series ended the season for the Buccaneers, who looked for a win to move on.

The team ended the season with 10 wins and only five losses.

11-year-old golfer set to compete at World Championship

A Sylvan Lake golfer will be heading down to compete North Carolina at the end of July.

Brady Durkin, 11, qualified for the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship on Aug. 1-3 to play in the tournament held atPinehurst Resort.

“Pinehurst has been my goal for about three years, I watched the movie “The Short Game,” a documentary about it, and eversince I watched it I’d always love to go there,” said Durkin, who attends Ecole Mother Teresa Catholic School.

Durkin is excited to be able to play at a course that held the PGA Tour’s U.S. Open in 2014, as well as competing againstkids from all around the world.

He qualified for the U.S. Kids World Championship by becoming the top 11-year-old in the province when he shot a 79 atRedTail Landing Golf Club in Edmonton.

Durkin loves golf because it’s just him out there during tournaments and likes that it is “more of a mental game.”

“It’s a different round every time you play,” added Durkin.

He plays around 80-100 rounds of golf a year, mainly with his dad and his friend Trevor Killam, a CPGA pro.

After school he will play 18 holes, practice chipping and putting, and putt some more on the green in his backyard.

During the summer months Durkin will go to the driving range in the morning, play nine holes, eat lunch, go out to practicechipping and putting, play the other nine holes then go home to putt and chip some more in the backyard.

Additionally, he added golf alongside hockey over the winter months.

Over the winter months he started working with his coach, Luke Rundell, in the simulator and with Killam hitting into thenets at the NexSource Centre.

Rundell, his coach from Meadowlands Golf Club, works with him on and off the course two to four times a week.

Durkin says he is going to be practicing a lot more leading up to the tournament at Pinehurst, and he will be heading downearly to play two practice rounds.

Leading up to the tournament the young golfer will be fundraising for his travel expenses and registration fees.

On July 21 Durkin will be at River Bend Golf Club on the mini links for a Golf-aThon. He will be playing five consecutiverounds of nine hole golf and is looking to earn pledges.

He also will be holding a bottle drive from now until July 22. He will come and pick up any donations from residents orbusinesses on demand.

The U.S. Kids Golf World Championship is not the first time Durkin has travelled to compete across the border.

Last year he participated in the Drive Chip and Putt Competition in Washington for a chance to compete at the Masters inAugusta, Georgia, but unfortunately didn’t make it.

The Masters is Durkin’s favourite PGA event and he dreams of being a professional on the tour himself one day.

Durkin says he is proud to be able to represent Sylvan Lake and Canada in North Carolina this summer and appreciates thesupport he has received from Meadowlands Golf Club on his path.

Three other young golfers from Red Deer, who also golf under Coach Rundell, will be making the trip to the WorldChampionship Aug. 1-3.

Fighter Jets light up Bucs’ to take AFL first place 38-3 loss puts Central Alberta into second place in the AFL

The Central Alberta Buccanneers and the Cold Lake Fighter Jets came into their matchup both looking to lock up first place in the Alberta Football League.

The Buccaneers — tied with the Fighter Jets at 3-0 — unfortunately came into this one slightly behind the 8-ball due to the absence of starting pivot Jarrett Burzuk.

His absence was felt in the first, with the Jets scoring early and often against a stunned Bucs’ defence — leading to a 23-3 halftime lead for Cold Lake. Backup pivot Mustapha Yekini was under pressure from the Jets defence.

“We had a young fella’ in there that we have to get under fire,” Coach Gary LaGrange said. “He is not getting it in practice and he isn’t feeling the pressure. He has a good arm, he is an athlete but he is young. He needs to calm down and execute.”

Dlan Neidermier and Tendayi Jozzy would both score for Cold Lake, with the Bucs’ only managing to capitalize on a single field goal early in the first quarter.

The Bucs’ came into the second half with the lone bright spot being their defence managing to create three Jets turnovers.

The bright spot wouldn’t shine enough in the second half, with the Jets immediatly running home another touchdown putting the essentially out of reach at 30-3.

The rest of the third quarter would actually be controlled by the Bucs’, but they would be unable to capitalize on their extended possesion time.

The score would remain our of reach at 30-3 heading into the final quarter.

“Our defence had to settle down and they did. We had our chances if we would have got our conversions and actually executed some plays,” LaGrange said.

The failure to capitalize late in the third would result in another Fighter Jet touchdown early in the fourth by reciever Jordan Moss, extending the lead to 38-3 after the two-point conversion.

Neither team would manage to add to their tallies, resulting in the final dissappointing score for the Bucs’.

LaGrange credited the Jets for the win.

“We knew they would have a solid run game and they have one pretty good reciever and they picked on our corner. In the third quarter, they didn’t do much. We just gave them the ball in scoring positions,” he said.

The 3-2 second place box now head out on the road to play the Fort McMurray Monarchs on July 6.
