Tents stolen before Grade 7 camp-out Businesses, staff, parents ensure trip goes ahead

Thieves didn’t manage to stop a Grade 7 camping trip from happening this week.

According to a Nanaimo RCMP press release, all nine tents meant for a year-end camping trip for

‘graduating’ Departure Bay Eco-School students were discovered stolen less than 24 hours before the planned excursion.

After reporting the theft, school staff advised parents, who spread the word over social media and “sure enough, within hours several community-minded businesses, staff and parents saved the day and managed

to find more than enough tents to replace the stolen ones,” noted the press release.

Police called it an example of good winning out over evil.

“The theft was disheartening but to see the community and businesses come to together to right a wrong was so wonderful. The students left this morning on their

three-day adventure and it was smiles all around,” said Annette Noble, principal at Departure Bay Eco-School, in the release.

RCMP found that thieves had cut locks to an outside fenced-in area at the school and made off with the tents and several bags of refundable plastic recyclables. The theft happened sometime between 6 p.m. June 21, and

9:30 a.m. June 23. No descriptions were provided for the stolen tents.

Nanaimo a prime market for new plane, Air Canada says NICHOLAS PESCOD NEWS BULLETIN

Canada’s largest airline thinks Nanaimo is the ideal market for a brand-new type of aircraft it’s expecting to receive later this year.

Air Canada Rouge is set to launch non-stop seasonal service from Nanaimo to Toronto beginning on July 1 using a 136-seat Airbus A319 configured with premium economy and economy seating.

Beyond that, Nanaimo is the “perfect” market for the Airbus A220, said Ferio Pugliese, senior vice-president of Air Canada Express and government relations, speaking to business people during an event hosted by the Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce on June 19.

“Very likely, you’ll see this aircraft here,” Pugliese said, adding that the A220 is a good fit for Nanaimo because its speed, range and efficiency allows Air Canada to operate in smaller markets more regularly on a year-round basis.

The Airbus A220 – previously Bombardier C-Series – is a Canadian-developed single-aisle aircraft that is extremely fuel-efficient and has a range of more than 5,000 kilometres. Air Canada has ordered 45 Airbus A220-300s, formerly known as the CS300, and is expecting to take delivery of the aircraft later this year.

Whether Air Canada will make the Nanaimo-Toronto route year-round in the near future is unclear but Pugliese said the airline is impressed

you launch a seasonal service … over time the awareness kicks in and the demand continues to grow,” he said. “There is potential for those to go all year round, but we take it incrementally.”

Although Pugliese couldn’t confirm whether Air Canada would place the Airbus A220 on a Nanaimo route or when that could happen, he said the A220 has far better economics than other aircraft.

“With the right aircraft, the economics get improved which allow you to run it through the year and still get a decent return and that is flexibility the A220 offers,” he said.

Also at last week’s luncheon, Pug-

liese said he anticipates the Boeing 737 Max to clear regulatory hurdles and be back in service “towards the end of the summer,” September or October.

The Boeing 737 Max has been grounded worldwide due to ongoing safety concerns – particularly around the plane’s manoeuvring characteristics augmentation system or MCAS – following fatal crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia.

Air Canada currently has 24 Max aircraft in its fleet and has an additional 37 – 26 Max 8 and 11 Max 9 aircraft – on order and while Air Canada Rouge does not utilize the airplane, its grounding has forced a delay in the re-launch of the Nanaimo-Toronto route.

Pugliese said Air Canada isn’t concerned about the safety of the Boeing 737 Max aircraft, but is aware that when the 737 Max is re-certified to fly by various regulatory agencies, the airline industry as a whole will have a challenge convincing the public that the aircraft’s safe.

“Obviously we will be having to work very closely with the travelling public on recommissioning that and watching consumer confidence as it gets reintroduced into the service,” he said.

Air Canada has removed the 737 Max aircraft from its schedule until Sept. 2. Transport Canada, which grounded the Boeing 737 Max in March, has not given a timeframe for when the aircraft could be certified and back in the sky. nicholas.pescod@nanaimobulletin.com

A man sentenced to nine years in jail for his part in a 2016 drive-by shooting in Nanaimo intends to appeal his conviction.

Armaan Singh Chandi was arrested following the March 1, 2016 shooting in the Wakesiah Avenue/Jingle Pot Road area of Nanaimo. He was subsequently tried by Judge Robin Baird in B.C. Supreme Court in Nanaimo and found guilty of attempted murder using a restricted firearm, intentionally discharging a firearm recklessly, concealing his face while committing an indictable offence, dangerous driving and failing to stop for a peace officer.

Chandi was found guilty in February and sentenced in May, but on June 17, Richard Neary, a Victoria lawyer, filed a notice of appeal, on behalf of Chandi, with the B.C. Court of Appeal, stating he is appealing the convictions “in questions of law alone and involving mixed questions of law and fact.”

Chandi seeks to be acquitted of the charges of attempted murder, dangerous driving and failing to stop for police and seeks a new trial for the other counts.

The appeal is grounded in the fact the judge “failed to properly consider and weigh all of the rational alternative inferences to guilt on the attempted murder count and rendered an unreasonable verdict on the driving counts,” the notice read.

There is still physical work to do at both planned terminals, but Marshall suggested that engineering work wouldn’t begin until there is more certainty about the project timelines.

He said he thinks there’s a healthy, growing travel market and he said Island Ferries is “very much in the game” and optimistic.

“There are some critics out there and I understand that.

There’s a lot of folks that want to see us get going and we want to support them,” Marshall said. “And somewhere between our cheerleaders and our critics, we’ll find our investors.”

Mayor Leonard Krog, at a city council meeting last month, said all levels of government have been working with the proponents and added that there is general agreement in the city about the importance of foot-ferry service.

“Many investors and people who wish to locate businesses and create businesses here because of the high cost of real estate and accommodations, etc., in the Lower Mainland, are looking to Nanaimo and one of the first questions they ask is, ‘when will the fast ferry or the foot passenger ferry be up and running?’ There is strong enthusiasm.” editor@nanaimobulletin.com

Savage said the OCP promotes high standards of green technology, innovative neighbourhood layouts and unique architecture, which he believes will make Lantzville a leader. He said the OCP isn’t “perfect for any one person” but a “healthy, balanced approach” for everyone.

“We’re handing future generations a real plum,” he said.

Coun. Will Geselbracht told councillors he liked the OCP and believed it was a good fit for the community. He then pulled out a plum and said he brought it because Savage had made plum-related comments at a previous council meeting.

“In anticipating of [the OCP] passing tonight, I brought Coun.

Savage’s plum and when I go home tonight … I can eat it knowing that things are good in Lantzville and it is a real plum,” Geselbracht said.

A major component of Lantzville’s new OCP is the designation of six neighbourhoods within the district – village primary commercial core, village south, village west, upper Lantzville-Ware Road, upper Lantzville-Superior Road and Lantzville east – as special plan areas. That designation requires a more “detailed planning and engagement” process and is an attempt within the district to avoid “cookie-cutter”-type developments.

encouraging the use of renewable energy sources and low-waste building materials.

In 2016, the previous Lantzville council agreed to have staff and a private consulting firm begin developing a new official community plan. Following months of consultation, open houses and community-wide surveys and OCP review select committee meetings, concerns were raised by some members of the

previous council about the entire planning process. That council also agreed to ban district staff from making any changes to the OCP without receiving council’s approval.

Lantzville Mayor Mark Swain said the OCP addresses the need for some development with the desire to preserve the semi-rural feel of Lantzville. He also said being able to vote on adoption of the OCP has been a “long time coming” for councillors

Olympic skier suing Alpine Canada after coach’s sex offences in 1990s Bertrand Charest convicted in 2017 on 37 charges NICHOLAS PESCOD NEWS BULLETIN

A former Olympic skier from Nanaimo has filed a class-action lawsuit against Alpine Canada, alleging the skiing organization failed to investigate accusations of alleged sexual abuse by a coach.

Allison Forsyth, who competed in the 2002 Winter Games, is seeking to become the representative plaintiff of a certified class of former elite skiers who claim they were psychologically, physically and sexually assaulted, harassed and abused by their coach, Bertrand Charest, while they were members of the Canada’s national junior skiing team.

Alpine Canada is the national governing organization for alpine, para-al-

pine, and ski-cross racing in Canada. Charest was employed by Alpine Canada as coach from 1996 until 1998.

In 2015, Charest was arrested and charged with 57 counts of alleged sexual offences – including 23 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor while in a position of authority or trust – against 12-18-yearold female skiers between 1991 and 1998. In 2017, Charest received a 12year sentence after he was convicted by the Superior Court of Quebec of 37 charges. He is appealing the decision and has been released on bail.

According to a notice of civil claim filed in B.C. Supreme Court, Forsyth claims that between 1996 and 1998 she and other female members of the ski team were subjected to “systemic abuse, harassment and assault” by Charest and that Alpine Canada is “vicariously liable” for his sexual misconduct.

Whistler, Forsyth claims Charest “frequently” slapped her buttocks and commented on her appearance. She claims that in 1997, after hearing a rumour that Charest was involved a relationship with an unnamed athlete, who was a minor at the time, she confronted him. She claims he admitted to the relationship but “wanted it to end.”

Take time for a little flag-waving on Canada Day Sometimes it seems like we could use a little more flag-waving, and there’s no better time than July 1.

Canada Day is worth celebrating. It’s a useful exercise to acknowledge the things we like about the place we live and feel gratitude for the rights we enjoy here in the true north strong and free. And it’s a day to proudly identify as Canadian – there are so many labels that we use ourselves or

that others use to define us, but ‘Canadian’ is one that we can all share.

It might be a good thing for us to make more of a nationwide effort this July 1 to celebrate Canada Day because it’s an election year. We find federal elections fascinating, and one reason why is because of the themes of Canadian identity that emerge during a campaign. Every party has ideas about how to make our country

the best it can be, but that means something different to everyone, so envisioning what’s best and what’s next for Canada will divide us in certain ways. Even if our major parties want a lot of the same things – a bustling economy, a healthy population, safe and secure communities, a clean environment – the nature of politics means they need to point out and underline ideological differences about how to achieve

those ideals.

The best thing we can do for our country is to do something to make it a better place. Hopefully that happens in a lot of little, incalculable ways every day, and hopefully it happens on Canada Day. But we also hope there’s a chance to celebrate the Canada we have now – it’s a special place and we sure do like it here.

We will not leave anything close to what we found for future generations. Plants and animal species that depend on old-growth will vanish. Climate impacts will worsen without the shield of intact ancient forests to reduce droughts, floods and fires. Degraded landscapes will impact the quality of drinking water and allow fewer options for a diverse economy that includes tourism and recreation.

Elstone claims 55 per cent of remaining old-growth forests on Vancouver Island is protected. This is highly misleading. As the total amount of old-growth trees declines because of logging, of course the percentage that is protected goes up.

B.C. could destroy 99 per cent of all old-growth, set aside one per cent, and report 100 per cent is protected. Is this the approach to conservation that British Columbians want?

His sustainability argument is particularly troubling considering B.C.’s old-growth forests were

looked after by Indigenous peoples for millennia.

Indigenous communities made use of forests in hundreds of different ways without destroying their ecological integrity.

The good news is it is not too late to save what remains of B.C.’s old-growth, restore second-growth forests and transition to truly sustainable forest management. We can still chose to save the web of life that depends on intact forests and move to carefully planned selective logging.

This would deliver “negative emissions” and wood products at the same time, capturing more carbon in our forests than is lost as a result of harvesting Creating more jobs with less ecosystem damage per cubic metre of wood deserves our full support.

The longer we wait, the harder this change will be.

The first step is for industry and government to stop the denial.

Pipeline spills can happen To the editor, I’m sure there must be brilliant public relations professionals working behind the scenes, scripting distorted views of reality. Case in point, such PR tricksters have many of us believing that the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion is a necessity for the sake of our economy – which is so untrue.

Public relations copywriters of supposed ‘facts’ would have us believe – at the behest of big oil moguls – that a 20-fold increase of tanker traffic on our Salish Sea is nothing to concern ourselves with. After all, there’s the taxpayer-funded $1.5-billion ocean protection plan. It finances the emergency boats and crew that, we are told, can scoop up the viscous bitumen.

However, like what happened with the Kalamazoo spill in 2010, the heavy oil will sink to the bottom while the dilbit, highly toxic chemical fumes float in the air. After over seven years of attempted cleanup and dredging, Environmental Protection Agency officials estimate that roughly 700,000 litres of tar sands oil remains on the Kalamazoo River bottom.

This is a well-documented tar sands catastrophe that even the cleverest managers of our perception can’t distort.

ALS worse than a death sentence To the editor, The sentence has been passed. Doesn’t matter how you got here, doesn’t matter what you’ve done to get to this point. How much you have fought or will fight. The ruling has been given. It’s death row for you whether you like it or not.

Living with ALS is like you are that death row inmate. All you have is time. Time to wait, time to think, time to be angry, time to just watch the clock. But where that in-

mate can leave his cell, go to the yard and smell that fresh air, ALS leaves you trapped in the prison of your own body. Unable to walk, unable to move, unable to taste the freedom of that simple pleasure of having the choice to go to the yard or not.

That inmate gets to talk with other inmates, share their life and experiences.

ALS has robbed me of my voice like a cruel jailer who has put me in solitary with my own thoughts, unable to give my words to those

I love. Even the simple act of sitting for a meal in the canteen. That inmate gets that freedom. ALS only gives me the choice of a feeding tube or no food at all as it cruelly wastes my body.

But there is hope for that inmate. They can be granted that last-minute reprieve from the governor, staying that execution order.

Giving back that hope, that spark of life. To keep on going. ALS does not allow that hopeful whisper.

Instead it says, ‘sometime,

maybe today or tomorrow, you will be executed by me.’ There is no reprieve.

There is no mercy. You know it’s coming, you just don’t know when.

Which would you rather be? The inmate or the one who really has the death sentence? Those of us who live with ALS and their families need support to end this awful disease. This is why I am sharing with you what it is to live and die with ALS. Mike Williams Nanaimo

Dial is being turned up to ‘11’ on climate change hysteria To the editor, Re: Time to end ‘age of oil,’ Letters, June 20.

Please. The hysteria! Activists, particularly those of the climate strain, have cranked the dial up to 11 in the belief that they can get normal people to accept a ‘9’ or at worst an ‘8’ in their

unending demands.

What began 30 years ago as global warming, was cynically renamed climate change by activists, recognizing that temperatures were not aligning with predictions.

Changing climate has been natural fact for hundreds of millennia, but

now it’s bad, really bad, climate change.

Plant nutrient was declared a toxic pollutant for which we must pay. Still, not enough to scare busy people into accepting a tax on everything, so a small town council (not ours though, ours were just copycats) thought declaring a climate emergency

would make them seem cool. Now it’s ratcheted up to a national climate emergency, though everyone knows it’s really not. Canada’s air, water, forest cover and overall physical health is better than it’s been at any point in many decades.

I don’t know how the letter writers get

up in the morning knowing we have just 12 years to catastrophe, but they should relax. Meanwhile, perhaps they can let us all know precisely which of the dire predictions, their best before dates long since past, has actually become reality.

Canada is turning 152 years old and Nanaimo rock group Wise Youngblood will be wishing the nation a happy birthday when they headline this year’s Canada Day in the Bay. The day-long event, which takes place at Departure Bay Beach on July 1 starting at 1 p.m., features games, bathtub races, and live music from both Wise Youngblood and fellow local band the Hollobodies.

This will be Wise Youngblood’s first hometown show in months, and vocalist Kyle Stephen said he’s looking forward to being home for the long weekend.

There will be roving entertainers too, free bouncy castles, interactive community booths, face painting, henna tattoos, Columbia Bakery has donated a big Canada Day cake and people can fly across Sway’A’Lana Lagoon on the zipline. Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog will kick off the celebrations.

“Mayor Krog has agreed to zipline

across for our opening celebration of flags event, which is super great. He’s a super good sport,” Rowe said.

Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue will be at the fishing pier offering vessel tours, Coastal Water Store will be on site to refill everyone’s reusable water bottles and Airhouse is bringing its brand of fun to the party.

“They’re bringing some mats and slack line to do some activities with kids,” said Grace Bell, city recreation coordinator.

People with disabilities will be given

priority parking at Maffeo Sutton Park, but all other parking can be found a parkades and parking lots downtown with free parking available at the Bastion Street, Harbourfront and Vancouver Island Conference Centre parkades and the parking lot at the corner of Wallace and Wentworth streets. PATTERSON, “Bonnie� Colleen Mercie HESLOP, Wilda Isabel (nee Wiggins) 1924 - 2019 The family sadly announces Mom’s passing on June 8th, 2019.

Mom grew up during the Depression and WWII. In spite of the difficult times, she had fond memories of those years.

Mom married her first husband, Hans Gillmann when she was twenty years old and they raised Carol and Allan on a farm near Kitscoty, Alberta. In 1965, Mom married Jack Heslop in Kelowna, B.C. Together, they raised Jack’s six children: Madelaine, Michael, David, Pat, Kelly and Erica.

During those years they lived mainly in Victoria and Nanaimo. Parksville was always their dream location and after they were on their own they had a home built there and made the move.

It was during Mom’s years on Vancouver Island that the farm-girl became an avid fisherman. Woe to anyone who tried to help her bring in “her� fish.

Mom loved to laugh, even if the joke was on her. She made us laugh with her subtle, playful humour. Mom was a wonderful cook. People dreamed about her many specialties. She also enjoyed knitting and her family received many beautiful sweaters, afghans and her special knitted dolls.

Jack suffered a stroke in 1995. In 2007 they moved from Parksville to Lakeside Gardens in Nanaimo. Jack passed away on April 13th, 2007.

It was at Lakeside Gardens that Mom met many new friends who became very dear to her. She spent many hours playing card games and a special challenge-shuffle-board. In spite of her claims of being a terrible player, she won the trophy three times.

Mom celebrated her 95th birthday with her family joining her in a feast.

A delicious sea-food chowder and four pies were prepared by Wilma and Kelley. Who could ask for more?

Mom’s voice became very weak during her last days, but her dying words were “I love you all�.

Mom was predeceased by her parents, George and Jenny Wiggins, sisters Margaret Houben and Hazel Macdonald, and brother George (Nelson) Wiggins. Also her husbands, Hans Gillmann, Jack Heslop, step-daughter Madelaine, step-son Pat, and step-grandson Johnny Dirks.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Lakeside Gardens and her many special friends who were gracious enough to let Mom win so many games of cribbage, dominoes, canasta, Wizard and shuffle-board.

Many thanks also to the kind and caring staff at the Nanaimo General Hospital Palliative Care unit.

With great sorrow, the family of Bonnie Patterson (nee Henderson) announces her passing on June 17th, 2019, at the age of 79 years, after a long and courageous struggle with ovarian cancer. Bonnie was predeceased by her husband Dave Patterson. She will be forever in the hearts of her beloved children, Colleen Malli (Brett), and Scott Patterson. She will also be remembered with deep affection by her grandchildren, Sarah Malli and Scott Malli, and by her siblings, Calder Henderson (Eileen), Judith Taunton, Brooke Bergot (Jim), and Dwight Henderson, and long-time caring partner, Bud Aalton. Memories of Bonnie will be held dear by her numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Bonnie grew up in Qualicum Beach then moved to Nanaimo to work for BC Telephone. She met Dave (Patty) at work, fell in love, married and they had their two children, Colleen and Scott. After raising her children, with a lot of love and home baked treats, she returned to work at the MidIsland Co-op where she truly enjoyed socializing with her co-workers and the customers. She retired from the Co-op after many years of service.

Her kindness and community spirit led her to volunteer with numerous charities over of the years. Even after her diagnosis of cancer, Bonnie continued to serve others.

She was a fighter, living many years beyond what medical professionals expected. Bonnie was defined by her warmth, compassion, and friendliness. She loved socializing, dancing, old movies, ice cream, and most of all, her home and family. To be with Bonnie was to have a good time. Her sharp wit and good humour were with her right to the end. Life without Bonnie leaves a hole in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Our family would like to thank the wonderful health professionals who cared for her over the years, in particular Dr. Anna Tinker of BC Cancer Vancouver, Dr. Ibrahim Dodo, and the entire Palliative Ward at NRGH. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. JARRALD, David Wayne born 9 June 1953 passed away quietly in Cowichan Bay at home on April 30th 2019. He is predeceased by his brother Thomas, Mother Elsie and Father Ralph.

He has a surviving nephew Stephen.

Ches passed away in Nanaimo on Monday June 17th at the age of 87 years. He was predeceased by his mother Winnifred and father Thomas. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years Irene; his siblings and spouses Raymond (Stella), Terry, Eileen, Marjorie (John) and 12 nieces and nephews.

Born in Candiac Saskatchewan, he made Nanaimo his home. He loved working outdoors but being a faller was his passion. Ches was a generous man who would always meet you with an open hand a wonderful smile.

Jean passed away at peace in her suite at Astoria with her family by her side.

Predeceased by her parents Ronald (Ron) Hay and Leona Hay (nee Aitken), and brother William (Bill) Hay; Constance is survived by her husband Raymond Hansey, son John and daughter Donna.

Jean was an extraordinary woman whose sharp mind, quest for knowledge and stoicism guided her throughout her life. The cherished wife of James W. Reid (1925 – 2000) and lovingly remembered by her family; Dick Reid (Lynn), Jay Reid (Leticia), Sherry Reid Danner, grandchildren, Timothy Reid (Nathalie), Leigh Reid (Vanessa) and great grandchildren, Liam and Eli, sons of Timothy and Nathalie.

A Celebration of Constance’s Life will be held at the Navy League of Canada (Sea Cadets), JP Bell Building, 750 Fifth Ave., Nanaimo, BC on July 13, 2019 at 1:00pm.

Richard Warner Franklin April 20, 1942 - June 15, 2019 Richard was born in Salmon Arm in British Columbia April 20, 1942 and passed away peacefully June 15, 2019 at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital – Palliative Care Unit.

He is predeceased by his mother; Nellie Vaye Franklin, and his father; Jack Warner Franklin.

He is survived by his loving wife Beverley of 57 years, daughter; Donna Lowe (Steven), son; David (Josie), Stepdaughter; Karen Ferguson, eleven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren with another one expected this December, sister; Debra Williams (Bill), brother; Melvin Franklin (Sandra), sister-in-laws; Carole Sharpe and Irene Sharpe along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Richard will be greatly missed also by his two dogs; Rosa and Molly.

Richard worked for AGT (Alberta Government Telephone) from 1964 to 1971. He moved his family to Nanaimo in 1971 and started with Telus.

Richard was an avid golfer at Nanaimo Winchelsea Golf Course with many of his golf buddies.

He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.

The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Dr. K. Torrie and to all the nurses on fourth floor who cared for Richard through his stay in January and February this year at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. Also to the Palliative Care, Home support, Home nurse Dawn and Pharmacist Faye.

There will be a Time of Visitation Saturday, June 29th from 2:00pm to 4:00pm at Telfords Funeral Centre 595 Townsite Road, Nanaimo.

Ray was born in the French City of St. Boniface, Manitoba. He moved to the West Coast with his family in 1965. As a young man, Ray had many interests: bowling, for which he received a certificate from the league at the time, pottery, and swimming. Ray attended BCIT where he learned carpentry. He was selfemployed for a time, using his skills to build homes. He had an extensive wood shop in the family home where he made furniture.

Ray was employed by Macmillan Bloedel in their pulp mill in Port Alberni. Prior to that, he worked for Overwaitea Foods in Parksville and Dawson Creek. Ray could be seen around Nanaimo on his scooter or out to lunch with his family and those close to him. His favourite diner was the MGM Restaurant in Nanaimo.

Ray lived most of his adult life in Parksville and Nanaimo. Ray experienced many challenges during his life and met them head on. He struggled with mental illness but rose above it with courage and dignity. Ray is survived by his sisters Florence and Eileen; brothers Maurice, Albert, Charles, Carl; their families; as well as many nieces and nephews. Special thanks for the love and care Ray received over the years from all the caregivers and health professionals he encountered when he was ill.

Unfortunately Ray lost his battle with cancer.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Love, the nurses of NRGH including the staff in Palliative Care. He received the best of care in his last days. Thank you to the staff at Serenity Lodge and to those there who called him friend. Ray will be missed by his family. A new journey has now begun for his soul, may he rest in peace. No funeral by his request. In lieu of flowers or cards, please donate to the charity of your choice in Ray’s name.

Athletes medal on judo mats Nanaimo Judo Club athletes won gold against national-level competition last month.

Four athletes medalled at Judo Canada’s Canadian Open Judo Championships at the University of Alberta in Edmonton May 16-19.

Cheyenne Fiandor earned double gold, was grand champion in ne waza (ground techniques), and took bronze in the senior tournament.

Korin Gardner earned gold in U21 and bronze in U18.

Hannah Darmadi earned bronze in U18 and Dakota Sanzana took bronze in U16.

Elementary school students show track and field talent

For local elementary school athletes, track and field season recently concluded with the Nanaimo District Elementary School Track and Field Championships. The annual event held at Rotary Bowl stadium featured qualfiers from approximately 25 local schools.

This week we feature top three finishers from girls’ events…

In the tyke (born 2009-10) division, Mountain View runner Karlin Korkowski was first in the 100-metre dash. Runner-up was Tegan McKierahan from Coal Tyee, who was also second in the 200m. Taking first in

In field events, Angelina Joughin from Rock City was first in long jump and second in triple jump. Best triple jumper was Martin.
