ASFA announces fire engine donation to Paraguay

The Alberta Society for Firefighters Abroad, which is comprised of many members from the Lacombe County Fire Service and the City of Lacombe Fire Department, recently donated a fire engine to the Encarnacion Fire Department in Paraguay. The donation, which was made possible through the support of Dow Chemical, is part of the newly formed ASFA’s mission to support firefighting departments throughout the world. County Fire Chief Drayton Bussiere has been involved with these donations for many years and said the intent of these projects is to create sustainable firefighting departments in places that need them. “We needed a solid connection with a country and we had a member of the Lacombe Fire Department who was from Paraguay,” Bussiere said. “He is well aware of the need there and helped facilitate the connections. We have built a base there.” Bussiere said that Paraguay has been their main focus on several projects — but the official formation of the ASFA allows them to expand their scope.

“We may stay there and start operating somewhere else eventually,” he said. “I think we will because there is a lot of need out there in different countries. The need is great in Paraguay and we will continue to work there for a long time.” Bussiere said the arrival of these donations is a big deal for these fire departments in Paraguay. “The fire department that I travelled down to train had no fire engine at all before we donated one, so there were going to calls without proper equipment,” he said. “They had an ambulance, but really it was a van they modified into an ambulance. “It is really impressive the amount of work the fire departments are doing without the proper equipment.” Bussiere said that most fire departments in the region are 100 per cent volunteer and community run, with little guidance from their federal governments. “There is some fire apparatus, but the road system from community to community really delays response. Abroad, said this particular engine is perfect for the community of Encarnacion. “With the amount of infrastructure they have, including high-rise buildings and large commercial development, we found that this truck with it capabilities and ladder capabilities would be best suited for that location,” he said. “This is the first time we have dealt with an apparatus this large. This is our seventh donation truck and we have previously done a few other mid-sized engines that municipalities had retires.” All of the engines donated, although retired in Alberta, exceed

their safety guidelines — meaning they should have long second lives in Paraguay. The truck will soon begin it’s trek to South America, where upon arrival, it will be joined by Albertan firefighters to help train the local departments. “This truck will be loaded tomorrow and is being sent to Vancouver, where it will be loaded on to a shipping container. It will be then transported next week on to a threemonth journey down the west coast, through the Panama Canal, around the east coast of Brazil and then up from a river opening in Uruguay,” Nicholas said. todd.vaughan@lacombeexpress.com

Lacombe County celebrates official opening of the Kuhnen Natural Area

Today, Lacombe County officially opened the Kuhnen Natural Area to the public. Located on the eastern side of Lacombe County, the public space features 65 acres of land running along the north side of the Red Deer River. “The gift of this land from the Kuhnen Family exemplifies the importance community residents place on managing green space for the betterment of current and future generations,” said Reeve Paula Law. “We appreciate this priceless gift from the Kuhnens, and are proud to protect these lands, for everyone to come out and spend time in nature.” Local long-time residents, Frank and Rosalie Kuhnen, generously donated this land to Lacombe County, who will ensure the area remains in a natural state for the public to use for passive recreational purposes. “Our family has thoroughly enjoyed using this land,” said Frank Kuhnen. “We wanted to share the beauty of this natural area with future generations, so they can experience nature first hand, as we did.

During the grand opening event, attendees enjoyed a barbeque, and tours of the area by local naturalist, Tim Schowalter, who showed people the geology and plants/animals in the natural area. More about Kuhnen Natural Area The Kuhnen Natural Area, found along the north bank of the Red Deer River, is one of the newest additions to the County’s inventory of parks and natural spaces. The 65 acres of forested land offers lookout points onto the river valley and a trail that leads down to the water. The Kuhnen Natural Area is located south of Alix and can be accessed from Range Road 23-0, south of Highway 11. This is also the second piece of land that the Kuhnen family has generously donated to the County. In 2015, the Kuhnens donated 140 acres of land north of Blackfalds on Lacombe Lake – aptly named Kuhnen Park, which features trails, including an access to a section of the Great Trail (formerly known as the Trans Canada Trail) that runs between Lacombe and Blackfalds. -Submitted by Lacombe County

If we can find ways to keep it growing, that would be ideal but it is about manpower and making that happen.” While the intent is serious — to keep kids safe on the farm — Lacombe County looks to make the day as fun and interactive as possible. “Kids learn by having fun, so if we can make it interactive and fun — they can retain more for when they go home and they can share it with their families. That is what we hope for,” Makus said. While it can be difficult to gauge the success of the program — Makus said a drop of farm accidents in the region may be an indicator. This year, there are new additions to help continue to promote farm safety. “We have quite a few returning stations: We have grain safety, post-pounder safety;

The fourth annual Farm Safety Day returned to the Lacombe County office — bringing in 300 Grade 5 students from across the region. “This year we are having our fourth annual Farm Safety Day, where we have 300 Grade 5 students come in to learn about multiple different topics on farm safety,” Jalene Makus, event coordinator, said. “This is for kids that live on the farm and for kids who live in the city, who may not know about farm life as much.” The event has grown both in scope and numbers since it’s inception. “It keeps growing and it seems like we invite more schools and more kids,” Makus said. “We started out with just 200 kids and after four years we are up to

fire safety; lawnmower safety and equipment blindspots. We get those stations every year,” Makus said. “We have two new stations with our wildlife safety, as well as Ag Safe has come with a multi safety station where they learn about electricity, chemical labelling and stuff like that. “That will be a cool mix which is new and different.” The feedback for Farm Safety Day has been uniformly positive. “People think it is amazing and they get excited to come to learn about farm safety,” Makus said. “We get positive feedback and the kids look forward to it and now the kids in the younger grades know about our event, so they look forward to in. “In Grade 5, they know it is coming.” todd.vaughan@lacombeexpress.com

Lacombe Birthplace Forest grows by 5 in 2019

The City of Lacombe once again honoured newborns in the community — while also adding the greenery of the City. The Birthplace Forest, located on Woodland Drive, is home to year of trees planted for new babies in Lacombe. This year, several families were able to leave a lasting legacy in Lacombe for their child. “This year we have a total of five babies and there are three from 2018 and two from 2019,” Mary Lou Fiveland, admin assistant at the Lacombe Memorial Centre, said. “I start advertising in October in our

community moments to let people know that Birthplace forest is happening. You can pick up your registration form anytime and we cut off April 30th. “For $75, the child gets a name plate on the board and a tree.” This year, newborns Elizabeth Lynn Mielke, Annalie Mathilda Hicks, Thea Fortowsky, Kane Edmund Reich and Brielle Michaela McMullin all received a tree and a plaque. Fiveland said the program has always been very well supported by Lacombe families. “It has always been a well attended pro-

gram and I enjoy doing it,” she said. “It is great with the new babies. “The grandparents are really keen for this.” Grant Creasey, mayor of Lacombe, said the forest serves two great purposes for the community. “These youngsters will have a tree planted in their name and also a plaque up on the Birthplace Forest sign,” he said. “The next important thing is to increase the size of our urban forest. “Lacombe is well-known for our trees and green spaces that surround a lot of our parks and trails and this is a way to keep

it touch, while honouring young citizens.” Creasey feels this forest is a great perk for families living in Lacombe. “I can’t say for certain that it is totally unique to Lacombe, but I am not aware of any other communities that do an event

similar to this,” he said. “I think it is special and a great way to have an ongoing legacy for a child or grandchildren.” Fiveland added the forest, “Will fill up and with a variety of trees and will be gorgeous.”

Lacombe man to be in national Canadian Tire commercial By Todd CoLiN VaughaN Lacombe Express

A Lacombe resident will be recognized Canada-wide after a Canadian Tire national advertising campaign featuring him comes out this fall. Sam Donahue, a truck driver from BAMMS Contracting and Lacombe resident for the last three years, recently filmed the commercial in Toronto. “The campaign is called ‘Tested for Life in Canada’ and it is a campaign that Canadian Tire has had for a few years,” Donahue said. “I signed up a couple years ago to part of a survey panel answering questions on brand recognition and also what my preference on the brands Canadian Tire offers. “Last fall, they sent me a Mastercraft cordless drill to test out and review. I did that and they contacted me and

told me to keep the drills and thanked me for the review.” Donahue thought his experience with Canadian Tire was over until February of this year when they contacted him again asking if he would like to take part in a commercial on the product. Donahue jumped at the chance and flew into Toronto — all expenses paid for five days — to film the commercial. “They are in the process of putting it all together. It will run in the fall and it will feature me — I will probably be in it for all of five seconds but it will be me,” he said. Donahue said he doesn’t typically look to be the center of attention, so being in a national commercial was a little out of his comfort zone. “Being on the TV set with the director and everyone, it was a little interesting because it was outside my comfort zone but also pretty exciting

at the same time,” he said. Donahue was happy to be able to represent Canadian Tire — a brand he has supported since he bought his first tool set when he was a young teenager. “I probably still have some of the tools laying around. It is neat to be part of the iconic store and I see it as a bit of thank you for all the years of supporting them,” he said. Being also represented his adopted home in Lacombe is something Donahue is proud of. “I have been working in Lacombe for three years and I absolutely love the community,” he said. “When they run this commercial, it will say my name from Lacombe. It is neat to represent a community I really enjoy living in. “It is a shame we don’t have a Canadian Tire here yet, but people will see Lacombe on the commercials.”

Donahue said it was the experience of a lifetime to take part in the ad. “Canadian Tire really treated me well with the all-expense paid trip to Toronto and I was there for five days,” he said. “It was neat to see the behind the scenes experience. You see the commercials on TV and you don’t realize the amount of people, work and money involved. “It was a fantastic experience from start to finish and I am looking forward to seeing what the finished product looks like in the fall.”

Town of Blackfalds opens Tutty Pond New natural greenspace recognizes historic Blackfalds family

The Town of Blackfalds recently christened their newest greenspace — Tutty Pond. The park, located off Broadway across from the Co-op Gas Bar, is a natural greenspace named in honour of the Tutty family, who owned the land since the 1950s. Jamie Hoover, deputy mayor, said the plan for Tutty Pond has been in the works for awhile. “I think the former leadership of the Town showed great foresight to imagine the growth coming to this area and they wanted to set aside a natural space that was also functional,” Hoover said. “Not only is this a great greenspace, it also allows for our expansion and to manage our stormwater system — which is something we are doing throughout the entire town.” Hoover said a natural greenspace can help slow down life for busy Blackfalds families. “We can have manufactured spaces, which are great for the kids but for people to really enjoy their surroundings — we like to keep it as natural as possible. There is an opportunity to keep this natural, while also reducing stress and improving the quality of life,” he said. Hoover also credited the Tutty family, including former mayor Wayne Tutty, for their commitment to the community.

“Wayne Tutty served on council and as mayor. He is passionate about the community and I’m sure he is a huge part of the reason Blackfalds grew the way it did,” he said. Tutty was happy to see the park finally opened after years of planning. “It is a long time in the making — it was 16 years ago when it was first dedicated. It was a good time to do it now with the development. It is a tremendous park,” Tutty said Tutty has already taken joy in seeing young residents enjoy the natural area. “I drive by here all the time and that is nice to see, especially with the daycare kids coming down here and looking at it,” he said. “Other parks are more urban, but this is a natural setting. They come and look at the geese and the birds — there is lots of birds in this area, along with foxes and deer.” Tutty also explained that land used for Blackfalds’ newest park was also the location of the Town’s very first park near the beginning of the 20th century. The park was centrally located due to it being near the old C&E Trail, which was at the time the only road connecting Edmonton and Calgary. “After talking to our local historian Judy Carlton, she was able to check out things and from what we found out from the information is that this was the first park,” he said.

A few weeks ago I wrote about the subject of travelling contractors and, to a lesser extent, door to door salesmen. The point I was trying to make was mostly something to the effect, “You should support your local community which in the end benefits you too.” I fielded a phone call from a local resident of the Wetaskiwin area who claimed he had too many bad experiences with local contractors and only hired out of town companies.; it seems to me this fellow is being a bit too fussy and unrealistic. No job is ever perfect and the best of us make mistakes; it’s not whether a mistake is made, it’s how you handle it that counts It reminded me of a situation I watched unfold some years ago. Before I went to college in 1993 I worked for a construction company in my hometown of Oyen. We did a little bit of

everything, including building grain bins, adding layers to grain bins (a horrible, thankless job), home repair and roofing. We did a lot of roofing around Oyen. It just so happens the owner of the company one morning said, “Well, it looks like we’re going to do some work for one of your wealthy relatives.” It turns out one of my relatives, needing some roofing work done on her home, decided to hire a door to door contractor rather than hire the company that her relative worked for. Now, you must understand Oyen sits on the bald prairie. Out there, we call a windbreak of bushes a “forest.”Not only that, the darn wind just howls across those bare, fescue-adorned fields. The reason we were going to repair my relative’s roof is that the compa-

ny she hired didn’t know or care that Oyen got heavy wind virtually all year. When placing asphalt shingles, they must be tarred down or the wind will rip them off. And since asphalt shingles are nailed together when placed, a strong wind, in a minute or two, can rip half the roof off. The travelling contractor didn’t tar the shingles. When the next strong wind rose, it ripped half the roof off and dropped them in the yard, near the curb and out in the street. My relative tried to contact the travelling contractor and, I’m told, the contractor, who’d moved on to greener pastures, said “You didn’t tell us to tar, so we didn’t tar. It’s your problem, not mine.” So my relative called us to fix the problem. My boss let me know that he wasn’t

going to cut a deal for my relative. He said she went with the out of town guy, who apparently was “cheaper” than us, he ripped her off, let her pay the price for it now. The one thing I will say for the out of town guy is that he had some attractive shingles there. We only put on colours like dual brown or dual grey; he placed blue, white and grey shingles that matched the colour of her siding. It’s just too bad that half of them blew off. We repaired the roof and my relative not only paid for the initial work, she apparently paid through the nose to get the original work repaired. If you think about it, she thought she was saving money, but ended up paying quite a bit more than a roof should have cost. Live and learn. When we take a look back, be it as students or staff, parents or our overall school communities, there is no doubt highlights and accomplishments spring to mind. Our Board and school division is no different when taking a moment to reflect on the school year that was. We are proud to see a continuous trend of growth for our students, and passion for our schools. These improvements in student achievement and overall student, staff and parent satisfaction are measured through Alberta Education’s Annual Education Results Report. WCPS saw a continued increase in the 2017-2018 academic results in 17 subjects in the Standard of Excellence, and in the Standard of Acceptable in 15 subjects. Additionally, eight out of 16 measure areas showed improvement from the previous year, with achievement data from the Grade 6 and 9

Provincial Achievement Exams and Grade 12 diploma exams showing improvements in all four categories of students achieving acceptable standard and standard of excellence. These results also coincide with targeted areas of focus for the division. That includes an ongoing commitment to ensuring all schools are safe, welcoming and caring through a district-wide health and wellness focus. We are also focused on maintaining a very high level of support for diverse learners through 144 educational assistants, School Social Workers in every school, coaching support for students and staff, and accessing community services to meet student needs. There is ongoing training in such areas as Traumatic Events Systems, which allows key school and district staff to

respond to crisis situations to support our students and staff. WCPS has also recorded improvements in high school completion, and expanding pathways to trades-based careers remains a strong focus through dual credit partnerships with Red Deer College in welding, agricultural equipment technician and automotive technician programs. These programs are a gateway to post-secondary, building student maturity and preparation for the skills they will require following high school, while giving them experience and credit towards a college trade. It is a very successful and expanding program with tremendous partnerships. We are also proud to see increased success for our First Nations, Métis and Inuit stu-

dents across Wolf Creek, with the addition of a full-time Learning Supports Coach while three elders provide cultural teachings to ensure all students and staff gain foundational knowledge. Our Board is committed to reconciliation, and part of that is the strong professional development opportunities provided for trustees, district office and school-based staff regarding Indigenous students, culture and history. Our Division continued to strengthen its partnership with educational authorities in China, as WCPS hosted 15 students from Guangzhou, China in three schools in Blackfalds and Lacombe from February to June, while 24 grades 9 to 12 students from seven WCPS schools travel to Guangzhou in March. It is a tremendous partnership between the Division and the Education Bureaus in China focused on an extremely valuable experience for the students, and we commend our ad-

ministration and staff for their commitment to fostering such opportunities for students. Each day there are stories of success and achievement across WCPS, as a Board we support, applaud and congratulate our students, and are proud of the staff, division-wide, who play such a crucial role for students. Lacombe is on the fast-track to being a go to destination for good eats and the emergence of Cilantro and Chive is a big part of that journey. This year, the restaurant placed in nine different Best of Lacombe Readers’ Choice Awards categories including first place in: Favourite Place for a First date, Best Burger, Best Family Dining, Best Fine Dining, Best Patio and Best Happy Hour Spot. Central Alberta is stacked with wonderful places to get 18 holes in and the Lacombe Golf and Country Club is no exception. This year, readers of the Lacombe Express chose the Country Club in Best of Lacombe Readers’ Choice Award as the Best Golf Course and 18 holes on a beautiful overcast 18

degree Celsius clearly shows why. While I may not be the best golfer in the world, it is easy to understand why locals come back to the Country Club. The first nine offering some of the funnest Par 5s in the region and also some of the most scenic and challenging Par 3s and the second nine offers some challenging, but beautiful Par 4s. Another enjoyable aspect of the course is the Clubhouse, which fea-

tures great food and also the pure joy of Cow Patti Theatre through the winter months. The course is one of three to make the cut this year, with The Nursery Golf and RV Park taking 2nd place and the Gull Lake Golf Course earning third. Beating out stiff competition, Eastside Eatery was voted Best Lunch Spot in this year’s Best of Lacombe Readers’ Choice Awards.

Lacombe is one of the greatest places to live by and learn through the educational system. The school, Lacombe Composite High School has many innovated facilities. The community is always supportive of the innovative projects students run along with one of the most dedicated teachers in all of Canada. In 2006 the innovation to make the school a better place was started. It all started with the quote, “Words without actions are meaningless” leading to the inspiration of twelve students becoming the second school in Alberta to build solar panels. From there, the school slowly started to develop more innovative projects that no other school had at the time, which includes the greenhouse, the fruit forest and the urban cultivator. Looking forward, it is incredible to imagine that in around October the school will have a small urban farm. Another aspect of the school is the micro business for students. It provides a opportunity for students to learn about the real word while keeping 50 per cent of the profit providing motivation to thrive. That is only the briefing on agriculture and Ecovision, there are many more opportunities throughout the school from the beekeeping program to the gym class where you can choose your activity for the next three weeks. Overall, it is one of the best places to grow.

Personally I like LCHS for a few reasons: first off, How I feel like I’m completing something; secondly, how many optional classes there is; and thirdly how the students can just ask teachers for specific help before, during, and/ or after class. The reason for school is to teach students skills that will help them out in the real world and LCHS does that a T. The course can be very stressful

and quite hard, but when you complete a course, it actually feels rewarding. Most students don’t just like the core subjects, so all students should have different courses, and LCHS not only does that, they also have clubs and activities that can help out your grades, by rewarding the students with credits. Granted, some of the lesser opinions can removed to keep some of the course that reward you with unique qualities in your resume. Finally, None of this would matter

Lacombe is a very kind and caring community that is very welcoming to all. I am a student at Lacombe Composite High School who has lived in Lacombe for many years. Something that I love about Lacombe is how inviting as a community. I’ve had many family members come and stay for a week and say wow it a nice community. Another reason I love Lacombe is Lacombe Composite High School because there are so many option courses and opportunities. When I tell people about it they always say, “I wish we had that when I was in high school or if I had that I wouldn’t have dropped out of high school”. I also love how the high school has a micro business that offers students real life skills and abilities that will help them in the future like teaching them how to make a business plan to how to manage a business and go out and meet community members. Another cherry on top of all of this is Lacombe is a community that has a plethora of small business and community minded people that are willing to help out the high school programs like the micro business and take a risks by associating themselves with the high school.

I have lived in Lacombe for the past six years and have seen a lot of the positive aspects of this community. There are many supportive and different programs and there is also many community spirit days. I have started many community clubs such as the chess club and a monthly Smash Bros Ultimate tournament. I often decide to do these things with very little planning or idea of cost, but every time the community has provided funding for things such as chess boards, monitors and a place to hold the events and I’m very thankful that they do this because without the support from the community these events that I enjoy running and participating in would never have happened. They also hold many spirit days such as Lacombe Days and fireworks in the winter, at Lacombe days and on Canada day. They bring the community together and make the seem more family friendly. This encourages more families to move to Lacombe keeping population growth steady and securing Lacombe’s financial future by bringing more taxpayers into the city. These events are both fun and economically advantageous for the city of Lacombe. These are just two of the reasons that I believe that Lacombe is a great place to live.

Summer is here and strawberry season is one of the most celebrated times of the year for lovers of this luscious red fruit. I always buy an abundant amount of all fruit when it is in season, and strawberries are no exception. Although strawberries seem to be available throughout the entire year, thanks to our friends in the south; they are not as good as the ones we get fresh right here from our local farmers. Imported strawberries from warmer climates have usually been cultivated in a way, which produces a larger and firmer berry more durable for transport. This is great for having strawberries available year-round, however these cultivation methods are also the culprit for producing a berry that usually is not as sweet or flavourful as it’s locally available counter-part. Thus, we tend to rely on sweeteners and flavour enhancers, such as sugar or chocolate, when serving them. A small amount of balsamic vinegar is also, surprisingly, a great way to bring out the flavour of fresh strawberries. Strawberries are very perishable and should be handled and stored with care. The Central Alberta Buccanneers and the Cold Lake Fighter Jets came into their matchup both looking to lock up first place in the Alberta Football League. The Buccaneers — tied with the Fighter Jets at 3-0 — unfortunately came into this one slightly behind the 8-ball due to the absence of starting pivot Jarrett Burzuk. His absence was felt in the first, with the Jets scoring early and often against a stunned Bucs’ defence — leading to a 23-3 halftime lead for

Cold Lake. Backup pivot Mustapha Yekini was under pressure from the Jets defence. “We had a young fella’ in there that we have to get under fire,” Coach Gary LaGrange said. “He is not getting it in practice and he isn’t feeling the pressure. He has a good arm, he is an athlete but he is young. He needs to calm down and execute.” Dlan Neidermier and Tendayi Jozzy would both score for the Cold Lake, with the Bucs’ only managing to capitalize on a single field goal early in the first quarter. The Bucs’ came into the second half with the lone bright spot being their defence managing to create three Jets turnovers.

The bright spot wouldn’t shine enough in the second half, with the Jets immediatly running home another touchdown putting the essentially out of reach at 30-3. The rest of the third quarter would actually be controlled by the Bucs’, but they would be unable to capitalize on their extended possesion time. The score would remain our of reach at 30-3 heading into the final quarter. “Our defence had to settle down and they did. We had our chances if we would have got our conversions and actually executed some plays,” LaGrange said. The failure to capitalize late in the third would

result in another Fighter Jet touchdown early in the fourth by reciever Jordan Moss, extending the lead to 38-3 after the two-point conversion. Neither team would manage to ad to their tallies, resulting in the final dissappointing score for the Bucs’. LaGrange credited the Jets for the win. “We knew they would have a solid run game and they have one pretty good reciever and they picked on our corner. In the third quarter, they didn’t do much. We just gave them the ball in scoring positions,” he said. The 3-2 second place box now head out on the road to play the Fort McMurray Monarchs on July 6. todd.vaughan@lacombeexpress.com
