Nelson’s new identical triplets are healthy, happy and home at last.

Katherine van der Veen gave birth to Ainsley, Olivia and Abigail on May 8. The girls became mathematical marvels the moment they were born — a study by researchers at Cambridge University in England found the odds of having identical triplets are 10 in one million.

“It’s just a random fluke of the universe or nature or god depending on how you look at it,” said Van der Veen. “We think it’s a miracle and just [the universe saying] ‘here you go, have fun!’”

identical triplets in Canada since 2016 when a Kelowna mother gave birth to a trio of girls. Interior B.C. has a recent history of identical triplets: a family in Salmon Arm also had the unlikely birth in 2015.

Van der Veen and her husband Ain Baird previously endured both a miscarriage and a preterm birth, so she was relieved the triplets were healthy after being born via caesarean section.

The family spent two weeks at the B.C. Children’s Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit in Vancouver after the babies were born over a month ahead of the original June 14 due date.

Their birth weights ranged from just 4.4 to 5.4 pounds. Of course, that was still nearly 15 pounds of

“I walk around [now and] I’m like, ‘how did I do that?’”

Van der Veen praised the hospital’s medical staff — the family had two nurses assigned to them — but said the new parents are relieved to be back home.

Of course, now the real work begins. Breast feeding triplets, for example, is a process.

“Sometimes you have to put down the first one, half feed the second one then put that one down and half feed the third one,” she said. “So it’s a juggle, but for the most part they’re awesome. They are really zen right now, but that will change soon enough I’m sure.”

ing ahead to life with their unique brood. Baird, who owns a construction company, has already made business cards that include a picture of his new daughters.

Van der Veen said she hopes, in time, her daughters become known for more than just their unique birth. “[I want to] be present for them and encourage them to be individuals because they are identical so they are going to be lumped together, but also recognizing they’re each little people and will be grown up people.”

A concert fundraiser for the family will be held July 13, 8 p.m. to midnight, at Finley’s Bar and Grill.

Owner will ask Nelson council to rezone Kutenai Landing property BILL METCALFE Nelson Star

The owners of a long-vacant 2.74-acre piece of prime Nelson real estate want to change the zoning to make it more attractive to developers.

Sun Holdings 3 Ltd. wants to change the zoning from CD1 (a zoning set up specifically for the defunct Kutenai Landing project) to MU2 (waterfront mixed use, commercial and residential) and P2 (water use zone, which would allow a marina).

The owner does not

have a proposed development plan for the property, according to engineer Peter Ward of Ward Engineering and Land Surveying Ltd., representing the company.

Rather, he said Sun Holdings wants to create zoning that would be more attractive to developers.

“The existing zoning does not work on that site, for current market conditions,” Ward told the Star.

Sun Holdings held a neighbourhood meeting on Monday, as the initial stage of the rezoning process

for the property. Ward said 20-plus people attended, including realtors, neighbours, and members of the city’s Advisory Planning Committee.

The current zoning is for 160 dwelling units in four separate buildings, along with specific expectations regarding density, construction methods, floor area, and maximum building height of 18.5 metres. It calls for 600 square metres of commercial space, an underground parkade, a lakeside restaurant, and a marina.

It also includes an

agreement with the City of Nelson that lays out a very specific construction schedule.

With the proposed MU2 zoning the maximum building height would be 10.5 m and as a result would have fewer units on the site.

The proposed MU2 zone is the same as the zoning for the Chahko Mika Mall on the east side of the property and the YRB highway maintenance yard on the west side.

“Should the proposed zoning be allowed,” Ward said, “the owner hopes that the property could be

developed in the near future with multi-family residential units.”

In 2001, the property was purchased by a local consortium, including former mayor Dave Elliott, which paid $1.1 million to prevent a standalone Walmart from being built there.

They then sold the property to Kamloops developer Mike Rink, whose New Future Group proposed Kutenai Landing, a residential complex that won city approval but faced much local opposition.

Slow sales and the developer’s other

financial problems killed the project. Rink lost control of the site to Paradigm Financial of Kelowna and an on-site sales office was removed in 2012.

The property was on the market for one year and one week before it sold to Sun Holdings 3 in December 2015 for $1.9 million, less than the asking price of $2.395 million.

Logging protester arrested near Balfour

Logging protester Jessica Ogden is in jail at least for the rest of this week.

She was one of a group of people blocking a logging road near Balfour when she was arrested on Friday for refusing to obey a police officer’s order to allow logging trucks to pass.

The officer was enforcing an injunction obtained the day before by Cooper Creek Cedar Ltd. in B.C. Supreme Court.

Ogden is in custody because she refused to sign a promise to voluntarily appear in court.

On Friday, a judge in Kelowna will set a date for a hearing.

The goal of the blockade, according to the group’s Facebook page, is to bring attention to “destructive logging practices and lack of appropriate regulation and legislation in B.C.” Ogden was also arrested also with two others in the spring of 2018 at a blockade near Meadow Creek.

Charges of intimidation brought against them were later dropped.

Women, children escaping domestic violence have few options in Nelson TYLER HARPER Nelson Star

Nearly 200 women and children seeking shelter from domestic violence were turned away from help due to a lack of beds at Nelson’s Aimee Beaulieu Emergency Transition House.

The 11th annual Report Card on Homeless, which was released Monday, revealed 139 women and 30 children could not access services at the transition house from 2018 through June 2019.

The house, which has operated since May 1995, has space for eight women and children. Rona Park, executive director of Nelson Community Services, says that is no longer sufficient.

“The fact that we are low barrier and that there’s nowhere for people to go after their 30-day stay means we get backed up in the service,” said Park. “It is shocking that that many are turned away.”

A total of 74 women and 33 children were housed by the service in 2018-19. Just 16 people found permanent residence after their stays ended, while 24 settled for temporary housing.

Park said the transition house desperately needs second stage options. She added an expression of interest has been made to BC Housing for units as part of its $734-million women’s transition housing fund, which will build and operate 1,500 new units province-wide through 2028.

Park said Nelson needs 12 additional beds, or four apartment units, that could be accessed for single women or women with children for two-year stays.

“The intent of second stage actually isn’t to solve a housing crisis.

It’s really for those women who are struggling to get their lives back together again after fleeing abuse.”

RDCK asks for power to regulate private land logging Bill MeTcAlFe Nelson Star

The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) wants the province to give regional districts the power to make land use bylaws that would regulate private land logging.

And it wants the province to require large private forest landholders to register their properties in the province’s Private Managed Forest Program. This would require of owners a degree of land use planning and stream protection that does not otherwise exist for private land logging.

These two requests have been combined in a resolution to the annual conference of the Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM) in September.

UBCM delegates will vote on the resolution, and if it passes, the UBCM will lobby the provincial government for the changes.

The resolution was put forward by Area E director Ramona Faust, who said it is a reaction to private land logging near Cottonwood Lake and Wynndel, as well as areas in the East Kootenay.

“We are looking for some regulatory way to foster better stewardship on private land,” she told the Star.

She said the resolution is intended to apply to large pieces of private land that are prone to being purchased for the purpose of clear-cutting, rather than to smaller parcels.

Two Green Party members vie for Kootenay-Columbia nomination BILL METCALFE Nelson Star

Abra Brynne of Nelson and Kerri Wall of Fernie are both hoping to be the candidate for the Green Party in the Kootenay-Columbia riding in the upcoming federal election.

The decision will be made on July 14 at three linked meetings in Nelson, Cranbrook, and Revelstoke. People who have been party members for at least the previous 30 days within the riding will be eligible to vote.

Brynne has been working locally and nationally on food security issue and policy for many years.

She is the executive director

of the Central Kootenay Food Policy Council, president of the Kootenay Co-op, the chair of board of the Unitarian Service Committee of Canada, and a volunteer on the Kootenay Organic Growers certification committee.

She is a founding member of many food-related organizations: the B.C. Food Systems Network, Food Secure Canada, the Canadian Biotech Action Network, the Canadian Association of Food Studies, the Canadian Association of Food Law and Policy and the Kootenay Local Agricultural Society.

She says two of her primary reasons for running are climate change and party leader

he Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce initiates and leads discussion on current issues that affect business in our region.

Photo submitted develop policy that will successfully regulate a significant portion of the cannabis industry in B.C., an achievement that would be a clear economic benefit for the province, even more impactful in the West Kootenay.

A thriving, regulated cannabis industry in B.C. would be well positioned to become a leader in what will soon be a global marketplace.

The Nelson and District Chamber will continue to advocate for this important emerging sector with all levels of government.

Private retailers in B.C. are facing considerable challenges after receiving their licenses and attempting to stock with products from the Liquor Distribution Branch. Those shortages have come about with only a handful of legal stores licensed. The

success and sustainability of cannabis retailers depends on the strength of their supply chain, and a lack of availability of product from small local producers, and the resulting lack of buy-in from consumers is a concern.

Local and regional cultivators face several hurdles and economic barriers to getting licensed.

There were plenty of other key policy discussions as the B.C. Chamber championed three policies on enhancing emergency management efforts in B.C., demonstrating a commitment to preparing and protecting the B.C. business community from floods, wildfires and other natural disasters.

“British Columbia’s framework for disaster management has been severely tested in recent years. The effects of climate change and extreme weather

events have had profound impact, and we must adjust to a new normal, through prevention and preparedness to mitigate impacts to our people and communities,” according to the Prince George Chamber.

Two other policies “Wildfire interface and prevention” (submitted by the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce) and “Floods as an emerging economic threat requiring action” (submitted by the Surrey Board of Trade) also passed with mass support.

Nelson and area has had a zero vacancy rate for more than four years.

The chamber has been an advocate for all types of types housing for our community. This is not a situation unique to our area, so not surprisingly, rental housing was also a front and center issue at the AGM with three policy submissions. Two advocated for more purpose-built rental housing, and one made recommendations on how to create a feasible market environment for rental housing for builders, developers and investors.

This is just a snapshot of 73 policies. Advocacy with the provincial government begins in July. The full policy manual will soon be posted on the chamber website at discovernelson.com Tom Thomson is the executive director of the Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce.

My husband and I were invited to attend our grandson’s graduation and we were extremely impressed with the entire event. Our experience with grad celebrations has been very traditional. We had never seen a grand march or cavalcade. Both events far exceeded our expectations. The grand march gave everyone attending, including the grads themselves, to see each and every grad in their finery.

The district office of Forestry on the North Shore’s Ridgewood Road has put up their new sign on the front lawn.

My first response to it was the poor judgment of materials and design chosen. Like a mirror held

to the sun the reflective brilliance obscured the words we were meant to read, “Kootenay Lake Fire Zone.”

Excuse me?

By our words and thoughts, and the feelings that we attach to them, each human creates his or her reality, and contributes to and helps shape the collective reality. Who dares to proclaim this area a fire zone?

Whoever they are, these “forest management” people behind the words on

that sign have no right to tell the forces of Creation that this sacred place is a place of fire. The sign on their front lawn is poor judgment indeed; poor and potentially hazardous.

Swing the pendulum, people of the Nelson area. Think and speak and write your decree that we are the Kootenay Lake wildfire-free zone!

Opinion Letters Government intervention needed to reduce plastics I like to give credit where credit is due, and Justin Trudeau’s decision to ban single use plastics deserves credit. No doubt it will get plenty of criticism from the likes of Andrew Scheer who thinks we should instead try to deal with the problem somewhere else in the world, and avoid any possible job loss even in the face of turning our oceans into a plastic soup. No doubt the plastics lobby is powerful.

the Kootenays who care about the environmental effect of our existence, yet still, today, when I go to some stores, most people are loading up their goods in plastic bags.

Individuals can have some effect, but only government legislation will ever solve the problem.

And during that nearly 50-year span, more and more of the goods that go in the plastic bags are in plastic containers that are stuffing all the earth’s creatures with micro-plastic.

If you want your mayonnaise in glass, well, you have to pay more, and I am happy to do so for the Earth and for my own health, but it does

little good if most other people still buy the cheaper product in the plastic container. We dearly need this kind of government intervention. Putting jobs ahead of the health of our planet is no longer an option.

First Nations included in latest round of Columbia River Treaty talks TREVOR CRAWLEY Cranbrook Townsman

Delegates from Canada, including local Indigenous observers, wrapped up the seventh round of negotiations on the Columbia River Treaty in the United States last week.

Canadian representatives met with American negotiators in Washington D.C. and are set to meet for another round of talks in Cranbrook in September, according to a provincial government press release.

Katrine Conroy, the minister responsible for the Columbia River Treaty and MLA for Kootenay-West, issued a statement, along with joint statements from local Indigenous nations.

“This round of negotiations marked a historic moment as representatives of Columbia Basin Indigenous Nations were present as observers for the first time,” said Conroy. “Representatives of the Ktunaxa, Syilx/Okanagan and Secwepemc Nations had already been collaborating with the governments of British Columbia and Canada on negotiation positions and strategies; but this week, they were present in the negotiating room and participated in breakout discussions with Canada and B.C. during negotiations.

“This is a very significant step forward — not just in terms of the Columbia River Treaty, but also in supporting our government’s com-

The federal government announced Indigenous inclusion in the negotiation process two months ago after an outcry from local First Nations advocates.

role as observers builds on and enhances our important work with Canada and B.C. over the last two years. We are confident that we can continue to contribute positively to these negotiations and help realize the First Nations’ goals for meaningful outcomes from these negotiations that are of critical importance to our nations and homelands.”

The Columbia River Treaty is a water management agreement signed between Canada and the U.S. in 1964.

In exchange for providing flood control and downstream power benefits, Canada agreed to build three dams, while the U.S. agreed to build one.

While the power generation provides for roughly half of the potential power generation in B.C., the construction of the dams flooded 110,000 hectares of Canadian ecosystems and displaced more than two thousand residents, heavily impacting First Nations communities and traditional territories.

The treaty has been criticized for failing to adequately consult with First Nations and other stakeholders when it was first negotiated.

Under the agreement, the U.S. paid Canada $64 million for 60 years of flood control and power generation benefits. The treaty has no end date, but either country can unilaterally terminate the deal by 2024, provided there is a 10-year notice.

ed Meyers awoke after midnight to a smoke-filled room and the sounds of screams and blaring sirens.

The 13 year old and his brothers Pat, 11, and Edward, 14, were in their apartment on the third floor of Nelson’s Strathcona Hotel, at the corner of Victoria and Stanley streets. It was May 27, 1955. Their mother was working late at the Cameo Cafe and hadn’t yet returned to the hotel, their home for the past three months.

Ted yelled to his brothers: “The place is on fire!”

Pat ran to the open bedroom window and looked down to see horrified onlookers watching heavy smoke pour from the building.

They knew their friend, Rudy Symington, 10, was alone two doors down and across the hall. Pat pulled the fire alarm and he and Ted tried to open Rudy’s door but it was locked.

They banged on it until smoke in the hallway became unbearable, and they returned to their room — where they discovered Ed had gone back to sleep. They shook him awake again.

Someone outside their kitchen window was crying for help. Ted knew this spot well because in the previous few days the brothers had gone out the window to a landing and climbed a ladder to investigate repairs underway on the roof.

Without thinking, Ted jumped through the closed window and landed beside a man looking for a way off the landing. Ted said he knew a route, and both climbed the ladder to the roof.

From high above Stanley Street, they yelled to firefighters below. The man disappeared for a few moments, then returned to say he’d found

a way off and insisted Ted follow him.

Ted hesitated, believing the fire department’s ladder would soon come for him. But the man grabbed his arm and pulled him to the far back corner, then onto a lower roof, then safely onto the ground. Ted never saw the man again.

Back inside, Ed grabbed Pat and led him out the window and down a ladder that served as a fire escape between the bay windows of their apartment and the one across the hall.

Pat went first. They’d used this ladder before to avoid walking down to the street, not realizing they were conducting their own fire drill. The bottom rung was a long way from the ground.

Pat jumped and a firefighter caught him. Ed followed.

The boys were led across the street to the Royal Canadian Legion, where they were reunited with Ted and their distraught mother, who had been searching for them.

Ted spent the night in the hospital being treated for smoke inhalation and a few cuts suffered from jumping through the window.

Pat recalls being given a blanket by the Red Cross with orders not to take the tag off of it.

“For years whenever I used that blanket, I was terrified that somebody would come into my bedroom looking to see if I still had that tag on,” he says.

• Harumi Shinmoto, 21, from Kaslo, worked at the Bank of Commerce. She woke her brother Yoshi up and he escaped safely. But it was thought she went back into the building to look for him.

• Gertrude Ellen Edey, 69, and Margaret Helen Sinclair, 73, were both widows and mothers.

• Quentin MacDonald, a carpenter, 45, had already experienced unimaginable tragedy. Ten years earlier, he accidentally ran over and killed his four-year-old son.

And poor Rudy Symington. He was living in the Strathcona after losing his Harrop home to fire a few months earlier. He’d probably already succumbed to smoke when the Meyers brothers were pounding on his door.

For the Nelson fire department, the Strathcona blaze was both their darkest and finest hour. It remains the deadliest disaster in the city’s history.

The hotel, built in 1891, burned once before in 1938. No one was hurt that time, but the top storey was destroyed — a harbinger of worse things to come.

By 1955, the hotel was mostly a seniors home, although it did have some young people and families staying there, like the Meyers boys and their mother.

Within a few years, they left town one by one.

Ed became an equipment operator and mine supervisor. Ted joined the Navy and learned steam engineering, then went into the pulp industry and worked as a pipefitter, gasfitter, and supervisor.

Pat became a pressure welder and project manager for maintenance and construction.

Today he lives in Quesnel and still does some contract work. Ed is retired in Chilliwack while Ted retired to Campbell River.

But you don’t soon forget escaping a burning building.

“Over the years we often talked about how fortunate we were,” says Ted, now 77.

“I recall Ted’s heroic efforts to warn his brothers and Rudy as well as his efforts on the roof,” adds Pat, 75. “It has stayed with me all my life and been the source of pride for me and an example to follow.”

The brothers each returned to Nelson individually over the years, but had not been back together until last year, when they decided it was time to formally thank the fire department.

This month, more than 64 years after the Strathcona fire, they visited again for an extraordinary ceremony organized by Assistant Chief Mike Daloise and dispatcher Heather Slack.

He called them brothers and sisters — for in a bit of real-life poetry, he and Ted became firefighters themselves.

Ted was a founding member of the Malaspina department near Powell River. Pat has belonged to the Quesnel fire department for 47 years, including 18 years of active service, and rose to the rank of captain. The Strathcona blaze, while not Pat’s only reason for joining, was “a good part of it.”

As he spoke, he pointed to large pictures of the fire behind him.

“I was looking for a word to describe the men who were there that night and how I felt about it,” he said. “Heroism and heroes didn’t seem to cut it. It was much deeper than that. The only word I can use is valor. The men who showed their valor that night has credited this fire department for its entire existence.”

Ted added: “There is no possible way we can express our gratitude to motivate people like you who dedicate yourselves to the safety of others. However, we do want you to know we are here because of people like you. We do appreciate it and will never forget it.”

When retired chief Simon Grypma started his career as a Nelson firefighter in 1976, no reminders of the Strathcona could be found in the fire hall. In stark contrast to today, where a museum attached to the hall recounts the department’s history, no photos were then on display.

Grypma and his colleagues watched newsreel footage of massive blazes elsewhere in the world, but scoffed: it couldn’t happen here, they thought.

Furthermore, while fire prevention was not an unknown concept, some firefighters felt it was unwise to overdo it. After all, if there are no fires, you might not have a job.

But one night in the alarm room, veteran firefighter Hans Lehrke told a wide-eyed Grypma about the Strathcona fire.

“It changed my whole mentality and

attitude,” he says. “It was the most amazing and profound [realization].

The fact that so many people died made me think ‘how can we do better?’”

It was the beginning of an odyssey for Grypma that culminated with the 2011 Kerr block fire. Similarities to the Strathcona fire were unmistakable: both were old, multi-storey apartment blocks on Victoria Street. Both fires began in the middle of the night while dozens of residents slept. Both buildings were destroyed — but in Kerr’s case, no human lives were lost.

“It was one of the saddest days of my career when I saw the building burn,” Grypma said. “But it was one of the happiest days of my career that nobody, not even a firefighter was injured.”

Photos and newspaper clippings about the Strathcona tragedy can now be seen at the hall. The brothers gave current Chief Len MacCharles a plaque that will be added to the display.

‘It was surreal’ There was further poignancy to the ceremony. While the Meyers brothers are among the last of those who were staying at the Strathcona the night it burned, at least four men who helped put the fire out are also still alive.

Two were unable to receive the brothers’ thanks in person: Hans Lehrke lives in Nanaimo and sent his regrets.

Rolf Reich lives in Chilliwack. Both were staying in the fire hall in May 1955, having moved there only a month earlier — from the Strathcona Hotel.

But two others are still in Nelson and shared their memories at the ceremony.

Bud Beauchamp, 86, was out of town when the hotel burned, working the night shift on his other job with the CPR. But when he returned later that day, it was his sad duty to help search for bodies. Along with Chief Elwyn Owens and another firefighter, he helped remove Harumi Shinmoto’s remains.

Tom Murphy, 87, remembers answering the phone in the alarm room. The caller’s first word raised the hair on his neck: “Strathcona.”

He handed the phone off and raced to gear up. “We could get dressed in 17 seconds,” he says. “When I went down the hill, I could hear the screaming and yelling. It was surreal.”

The department had no nets and just one aerial ladder, which frantically swung from window to window to rescue trapped occupants. Murphy speaks with awe of Don Cunningham, who operated it. “They claim he took 25 people off the side of that building.

I’ve never seen an aerial work like that.

Unbelievable.”

Murphy and most of his colleagues stayed all night, to the brink of exhaustion. But one lighter moment stood out.

“The day after, we were in the hall cleaning when a little man came up and in a broad Scottish accent asked ‘Did any of you boys find my teeth?’

“To make him feel good, we said we’d take a look. And we found them in a jar, half full of water! The glass had melted and run down the outside. So he was happy.

“Two hours later, he’s back up at the hall and said ‘Lads, you didn’t find my wife’s teeth, did you?’”

Following the presentation, the three Meyers brothers and the two former firefighters posed together in front of one of the department’s antique trucks.

Five of the last people who know firsthand what that terrible night was like, reunited for the first time.

L.V. Rogers Secondary School has received the Golden Star Legion Award from the Canadian Legion and the B.C. Retired Teachers’ Association for an inter-generational project conducted over the past two years.

The awards were presented at a picnic at Lakeside Park on Friday.

The project consisted of a series of conversations between seniors and high school students held in English teacher Carla Wilson’s classroom in 2018 and 2019.

The discussions were facilitated by Lee Reid around topics such as #MeToo, climate change, love, death, and loneliness.

Reid has since written a book about the sessions: Growing Together: Conversations between Seniors and Youth, with photos by Blaise Enright.

RDCK chair: No comment on Castlegar Mayor’s FCM trip

The chair of the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) board declined to comment this week on whether taxpayers got their money’s worth from Castlegar mayor Bruno Tassone’s attendance at a national municipal conference.

“I can’t comment on that because his report is not fully encompassing everything he did,” Aimee Watson told the Star. “I did actually see him in quite a few things (at the conference) so I refrain from commenting. I leave that to him.”

Watson said the RDCK currently has no policy on its board members’ attendance at the annual conference of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), but that such a policy is in the works and will be presented to the board in August.

Tassone, who represents Castlegar on the RDCK board, made the news last week because he was unable or unwilling to tell the Castlegar News what educational events he attended, stating that he would report this information to the RDCK. His written report to the RDCK shows that he attended one study tour, a trade show, one speaker, the FCM elections, the opening and closing ceremonies, and no workshops.

Tassone was one of two of the 16 delegates who submitted a written report to the RDCK on his activities at the conference. (Watson was the other.)

At Thursday’s board meeting, which Tassone did not attend, the other 15 board members who attended the FCM conference each gave a brief verbal account of their activities, most of

them simply mentioning a few highlights or general impressions, rather than giving a full list of events they had attended.

It costs the RDCK about $3,600, plus incidental expenses, to send an individual delegate to the conference.

Sixteen board members and one staff member attended the 2019 conference, for a total price tag of at least $61,000.

At the conference,

delegates attend study tours, educational workshops, trade shows, and addresses by the federal party leaders. They participate in meetings on regional municipal issues and have opportunities to meet with and lobby federal government representatives. They also share issues and solutions with their counterparts from across the country.

willingness to explore the offbeat and obscure. At the Elephant Mountain Literary Festival, July 11 to 14 in Nelson, we’ll catch a glimpse of just where healthy curiosity, good research, and excellent writing can take you.

As EMLF’s 2019 writer-in-residence, Marilyn comes exceptionally well qualified, having received numerous accolades, nominations, and awards, including the Gwendolyn MacEwen, Pat Lowther, and Dorothy Livesay priz-

es for poetry. She was a Fulbright scholar at NYU and taught creative writing there, as well as at the University of Victoria and Vancouver Island University. She’s held positions as writer-in-residence across Canada.

So where has Marilyn’s curious mind taken her? Here’s a short tour of this author’s fascinating literary explorations.

The ten writers who are registered for oneon-one critiques with Marilyn for the 2019 Holley Rubinsky Memorial Blue Pencil Sessions (named for the late Kaslo author and mentor) are clearly set for an illuminating exchange. And although those sessions are sold out, the rest of us can catch a measure of luminosity — and witness something of that curious mind — in two EMLF events.

On Thursday, July 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the

Nelson Public Library, Marilyn will give a talk entitled Out of the Shadows: Writing and Restoration. The title, she told me, is taken from the words of writer Italo Calvino as he compared literature to a game of shadows: “Tracing the endless paths of a labyrinthine world,” he wrote, “we play hideand-seek with the elusive, ineffable order of the universe.”

Marilyn will describe her own labyrinthine path as she researched the life and work of an individual with a curious story indeed. Mary MacLeod, an exiled and silenced

17th-century Hebridean poet, was banned from composing any song indoors or outdoors. Ever defiant, she continued writing songs within the letter of that law— on her threshold. Marilyn, fascinated with this rebel poet, wrote her own poetic tribute: Threshold was published by Leaf Press in 2015.

In Marilyn’s talk, she’ll describe the regenerative role that writers’ works can play by returning lost and excluded materials to the literary conversation. A donation of $5 is suggested for the talk, which is open to

anyone to attend.

Marilyn appears on the bill of Saturday Night Live! on July 13, 7:30 p.m. at the Hume Hotel, along with singer-songwriter Stephen Fearing and novelist and screenwriter Ian Weir, in a triple-header that is not to be missed (tickets available at e m l f e s t iva l . c o m ) .

There, she’ll read from her new poetry collection What Is Long Past Occurs in Full Light, which considers the transformative interconnections between literature, ecology, civilization, history and personal critique.

“I’ve felt a sense of obligation towards lost or nearly lost stories and have written about them, mainly in fiction,” she told me.

“Whether or not writers feel it is their task, they seem instinctively to gather materials from the margins.

Doing so always has the power to affect public consciousness.”

Lost stories and found fascinations abound at the Elephant Mountain Literary Festival, where curious minds gather.

Busy month for Rotarians in Nelson

Highway clean up

Watch for busy Rotarians throughout Nelson events over the next month.

First up is the annual Nelson Rotary Club’s Canada Day BBQ. Join the club at Rotary Lakeside Park as they cook up their famous Baron of Beef and hot dogs for the always large holiday crowd. Don’t miss their information booth under the Rotary tent find out about local and international projects and our club history.

Later in the month, MarketFest returns to the 200 and 300 blocks of Baker Street for an evening of fun. The Rotary Daybreak Club as always will be serving their Marketfest hot do gs as part of their ongoing fundraising efforts. Look for their smiling faces and Rotary aprons!

Rotary Interact and the Nelson Rotary Club came together this past Saturday to clean the highway between Pacific Insight and the Taghum bridge. They could not believe the number of cigarette butts, coffee cups and plastic that was collected on the side of the road.

The program consisting of 35 speeches and 98 breakout sessions met the informational needs of every Rotarian. In his keynote address, Rotary International President Barry Rassin said, “Service to others is an integral part of our mission, whether it’s through the plans and actions of individual clubs, Rotary’s six areas of focus, or the transformational support of The Rotary Foundation. And the service that most defines us and our global mission is the ongoing goal to rid the world of polio.”

Alongside partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary has achieved a 99.9 percent reduction in polio cases since spearheading the initiative more than 30 years ago. Since then, Rotary members have contributed $1.9 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries from polio.

Today, just two countries continue to report cases of wild poliovirus, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Rotary is committed to raising $50 million per year, with every dollar to be matched with two additional dollars through a matching agreement with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Including the matching funds, Rotary is committing another US$102 million this year to fund polio eradication efforts in 13 countries.

KOENIG, Carol Frances March 15, 1932 - May 29, 2019 With sadness we announce the passing of our Mother, Carol Frances Koenig. She was born in Revelstoke B.C. on March 15, 1932 and died in Nelson this past May 29, at the age of 87.

Carol was the third of three daughters born to Ross and Helen Young.

As their’s was a C.P.R. family, they were transferred from time to time, but Carol’s formative years were enjoyed in the Nelson area. After her graduation from Nelson High School she enrolled in the Nursing program in Vancouver, and upon completion, worked as a psychiatric nurse at Essondale.

In the early 1950s, Carol met Alexander Koenig, a young man from Kelowna. They fell for each other and were married in Trail on Sept.11, 1952. They settled in Nelson and began their family of 4 children.

Carol was a busy and creative person. She was an accomplished seamstress, an avid knitter, and an exceptional cook. She was full of curiosity and was a lifelong learner. As her children became more independent she needed new outlets for her creativity so enrolled at K.S.A and began classes in pottery. She fashioned beautiful and functional pots and vessels.

When Carol and Alex began building their dream home on Nelson’s North Shore, Carol apprenticed herself to their carpenters, doing many of the labouring tasks herself. She wanted to be involved and to keep the progress moving, and on schedule.

Her passion after the house was completed was her garden. Crafting from the rocky forest floor, she created a labyrinth of mossy paths winding through her myriad blooms and blossoms. Her annual plant sale was a highly anticipated event After Alex died in 1995, Carol took up kayaking. For years her happy place was on the water, paddling along the shores of Kootenay Lake. She kept this up well into her 80’s.

Of late, Carol’s body was failing her, but she remained fiercely determined, bright and sassy until the end. Her death was peaceful, her family was close and her son Torry was by her side.

Carol was predeceased by her husband Alex and her 2 sisters, Jean Weir and Margery Young. She is survived by her children, Kim Rowan (Bob Corey), Tamara Koenig-Fraser (Ian), Kelly Koenig (Tammy), Torry Koenig (Luisa), 9 Grandchildren and 7 Great-Grandchildren and 2 nieces, Shelley Nelson and Marnie Olson..

We give our thanks to the staff of Kootenay Lake Hospital for the care and kindness that was shown to our Mother, and to Dr. Cochrane, our extreme gratitude for his many years of compassionate care.

Family and close friends will gather on her beach in late July to celebrate Carol’s life.

On Saturday, June 22, 2019, Pauline Murphy passed away at the age of 77.

While Pauline never ate much herself, she enjoyed feeding her family. It was how she demonstrated her love – primarily through bread, muffins and perogies! We will miss Pauline and we will miss her food – thank goodness she recently wrote down her recipes as it’s how she would want to be remembered.

Pauline is survived by her partner John Kosnick, her brother Paul Misiura (Thelma) and her children Juanita Kreter, Kenny Kreter, Kellan Murphy (Elizabeth) and Mack Murphy (Nagere). Pauline will also be remembered by her amazingly brilliant grandchildren Jesse, Janine, Josh, Ryan, Kyle, Serena, Emma, Maddison, Sage, Cyrus, Mackenzie and her great grandchildren Milo, Leni, Layla and Sloan.

The family would like to express a special thanks to all of the doctors and nurses at the Nelson Hospital. There will not be a funeral service, however, well-wishers are encouraged to eat a muffin in her honor.

You ignited our lives with joy, Your halo of curls and ashing eyes.

You inspired us to paint, play music, and create.

You inspired us to communicate.

You inspired us to discover new ideas and new people to appreciate.

You were not perfect- but always fabulous!

Rosemont Elementary cuts ribbon on new outdoor classroom TYLER HARPER Nelson Star

Rosemont Elementary principal Tim Mushumanski says his dream is a reality.

Mushumanski and the entire school opened their new outdoor classroom with a ceremony Tuesday.

He said he hoped to have a space for student and class use that could also be enjoyed by the neighbourhood ever since he took over as principal in 2015.

“We have a rich history of playing in our forest here. It’s super important to us,” said Mushumanski.

“We talk more and more about learning outdoors and what it does for us. We had the idea of let’s fundraise, let’s put something together, but let’s make it simple, permanent, earthy and useful. So this is what we came up with.”

have become popular at local schools. Redfish Elementary unveiled its classroom last year, while South Nelson Elementary also opened an outdoor classroom in 2017.

The circle of stone, which derives inspiration from medicine wheels, was completed in April after the school and its parent advisory committee raised approximately $7,500.

The project also received donations of labour and materials.

A bench and mature trees installed last week put a bow on the new space, which Mushumanski said will serve as an important part of students’ daily routines.

“It grounds us. A lot of our classes are starting to use this to start their day in a circle format, sharing what’s going on, where they’re at, whether they

are ready to start their day.

“It gives us a chance to get out of a classroom environment, which sometimes can be overstimulating for a lot of our kids. This is a calm, pleasant place. [It’s] open, it’s not a noisy environment because it can’t really be, there are no echoing sounds. So it does a lot especially for our challenged learners.”

Tuesday’s event also featured a tribute to former Rosemont student Alistair Bellefeuille, who passed away in 2016. A “buddy bench” was installed next to the playground in his honour.

“It was really hard for our school. It was a really traumatic experience,” said Mushumanski. “He had cancer and went really quickly. It really affected all of us, so every year we try to remember him around the end of June.”

Two major U.S. newspapers are singing the praises of Nelson and Kootenay Lake.

The Washington Post included a piece by John Briley on June 20 headlined “Better than Banff ? In British Columbia, Nelson is a contender.”

After examining Banff’s virtues, Briley posed the question: “So: How about a similar checklist — hiking, paddling, skiing and grinning ever-so-smugly — in a slightly larger, more affordable and far less-trafficked locale?”

The story went on to extoll our “world-class trails,” and called Kootenay Lake “a 65-mile-long sanctuary for stand-up paddleboarders, canoeists, sailors, anglers, powerboaters and swimmers.”

It also claimed Nelson’s “80

restaurants are more per capita than Washington, D.C. or New York,” singling out Kootenay Tamil Kitchen and Jackson’s Hole. (There must have been some rounding involved, for TripAdvisor lists 68 places to eat in Nelson, some of which are no longer in business.)

On Sunday, the Spokane Spokesman-Review included Kootenay Lake on a roundup of favourite summer day trips. Oddly, it started off by claiming the lake was “formed by the damming of the Kootenay River.” (The dams do affect lake levels, but the lake was there long before they were built.)

The rest of the piece was more accurate. It gave shoutouts to Kokanee Creek Provincial Park, the Kootenay Lake ferry, Glass House in Boswell, the fruit stands of Creston, and Crawford Bay’s “charming restaurants and public beach.”
