Golden artist Claire Dibble is currently preparing to kayak from Canal Flats, British Columbia to Astoria, Oregon. The source-to-sea trip of 2,000 kilometres will take nearly four months, starting in July.

The journey is a large-scale art project which will include documentary photography, interviews with residents of the Columbia Basin, and a handbuilt kayak. Ms. Dibble recently completed the boat, a 14’ skin-on-frame style kayak made from locally sourced Western Red Cedar and White Oak from the Lower Columbia Basin.

A selection of photographs created during the trip will be exhibited as the journey progresses. Small prints of photographs from the river will be shown at Kootenay Gallery in Castlegar from June 20th to August 24th and at the Columbia Art Gallery in Hood River, Oregon in September and October. An exhibition of final works, including the kayak, will be shown sometime after the trip is completed.

The project is meant to highlight the ways the Columbia connects people all along the river, showing that, despite differences in lifestyle or values, there are also common interests and appreciation. To help illustrate this, Ms. Dibble plans to interview people from a variety of backgrounds along the way. The goal is to create

a portrait of the river and its people in 2019, amidst the renegotiations of the Columbia River Treaty.

The trip will involve navigating 14 dams by portaging, shuttling, or the use of navigational lock systems where possible. With so many dams on the river, there is more slackwater than moving water, and Ms. Dibble is outfitting her kayak with a small sail for the times when winds are at her back. She will paddle through wetlands and reservoirs, past timber harvesting, agricultural lands, the Teck smelter in Trail, one of North America’s most contaminated nuclear sites at Hanford Reach, and giant barges moving goods through the Lower Columbia.

There will be several events in towns and cities along the way, including slideshows, community paddle sessions, and talks with school children. She is teaming up with Rocky Mountain Naturalists for an event on her scheduled launch date of July 1st in Canal Flats.

Ms. Dibble is a photographer, artist, and freelance writer who has lived in Golden for the last 10 years. She has shown past projects at the Art Gallery of Golden and in pop-up exhibits on the pedestrian bridge (2012) and along Highway 1 (2016) where she showed a series of 101 portraits of highway travellers in the windows of Tim Hortons.

Judge orders social media apology for sexual assault case from Fairmont (The following content deals with sexual assault and may be upsetting to some readers.)

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Melanie Ykema doesn’t want to be referred to as Jane Doe. She wants you to know her by name because she is not ashamed about the sexual assault she endured in March of 2018 and because she wants to be an advocate for others.

“People can contact me if they want to talk to me, and I can come hold someone else’s hand and rub their back if they’re going to vomit in the courthouse, because I almost did,” she said.

She, her parter and their RCMP Victim Services support worker sat in the back of the Invermere Law Courts courtroom on Tuesday, June 18th as Zachary Welch, a former friend of hers, was sentenced for assaulting her when she and a group of friends where visiting from Calgary.

Ms. Ykema and Mr. Welch were alone in a sauna at a rental property in Fairmont when the incident occurred.

Ms. Ykema described the assault to the Pioneer as follows, switching between past tense and present as is common for those reliving trauma who can’t help but disappear back into the past: “He leans over and grabs my nipples. Right then left. Multiple times. I freeze. I can’t breathe. I’m having a panic attack. He grabs my nipples again and pinches them hard. I move down to the second bench to breathe easier. I’m trying to get out of there without passing out or throwing up. My panic won’t let me move. I’m so scared. It was so hot, and I kept wiping my face. He sits down across from me and starts rubbing his drink up and down my leg. I feel sick. My flight mode finally kicks in and I stand up and say: ‘this has gone too far.’ I go to leave and he grabs my butt – full hand – and squeezes.”

It’s OK that she froze at first, Judge Lynal Doerksen told her as he prepared to issue his judgement. In his nearly 30-year law career, he’s seen victims respond in any number of ways.

“Everyone reacts differently to a crime. There’s no rhyme or reason to it, and there’s certainly no reason for you to feel any shame because of how you reacted to it. You should not feel ashamed at all about this, and I think you’re stronger than you realize,” he said. “You had the courage to stop this crime and you did.”

Except for her partner who was also on the trip, Ms. Ykema is no longer friends with the rest of the friends who accompanied her to Fairmont to celebrate her birthday.

“All of my friends took his side. None of them believed me,” she said. “I became severely depressed. I lost my friends. And in June [of 2018] I found myself standing at the top of an overpass looking down and thinking about how much easier my life would

be if I didn’t have to go through this pain.”

But Ms. Ykema chose to live and to invest in herself. She is going to counselling and doing all she can to heal and move forward. This isn’t the first time she’s been sexually assaulted, and she’s also dealing with borderline personality disorder and stress so severe that it leads to seizures.

“I can’t find a job because I have to go to therapy a couple times a week during business hours,” she said. “So it’s like: do I work or do I go to therapy?”

Following Mr. Welch’s guilty plea, Judge Doerksen sentenced him to one year of probation, 50 hours of community service and any counselling as directed by his probation officer. Judge Doerksen also ordered that Mr. Welch extend his apology to Ms. Ykema beyond the courtroom.

While he said he couldn’t change the reaction Ms. Ykema received from the friends she lost, he wanted “to try to set the record straight” by requiring Mr. Welch to post an apology to Ms. Ykema on his Facebook account.

“I feel good about that because I feel like I’ve been heard, and that’s pretty much all I’ve wanted from day one,” she said. “It’s like he has to validate me and how I feel. He has to take accountability for what he did, and everyone’s going to see that.”

While Ms. Ykema called herself “like the scared-est person in the entire world,” she felt compelled to speak out.

“Every woman, man, child, person who has been sexually assaulted should not feel scared to come forward and stand up and talk about it because the more people that do that then the less it’s going to happen,” she said. “People don’t want to talk about it. They want to hide it and they feel ashamed, and I’m not going to let him make me feel that way.”

Hilla Kerner, a frontline worker with Vancouver Rape Relief and Women’s Shelter, which belongs to the Canadian Association of Sexual Assault Centres, said “any unwanted touch of women’s bodies that has sexual intention” is a crime.

“We really, really encourage straightforward clear consensual communication...

The simple way is to ask: Can I touch you? Can I kiss you? Can I hold you? Can I hug you?” she said. “Better ask than do something that the other person did not want.”

When Ms. Kerner heard Ms. Ykema’s account of Mr. Welch’s actions, she said: “He could have seen that she’s freezing, that she’s not interested. It’s very blunt... It was obvious through the whole process he couldn’t care less of what she wants and what she’s interested in. It’s a very straightforward sexual assault.”

Non-consensual groping is a serious problem, she said, adding that often “when men get away with that they escalate their behaviours.”

She is pleased that Mr. Welch was required to make a public apology for his actions and said: “social accountability is a useful strategy to get men to stop sexist behaviour.”

This past week, June 17th through June 23rd, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 83 calls for service. The following are some of the more notable files our officers responded to.

• On Monday, June 17th, a theft was reported from a construction site near Marble Lake in Kootenay National Park. Several thousand dollars’ worth of construction tools and equipment were stolen from the worksite sometime between June 16th and June 17th. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Columbia Valley RCMP. • On Monday, June 17th at about 1 p.m., a two vehicle collision occurred on Highway 93/95 and Bench Road in Windermere. A BMW 335i had been struck from behind by a Ford Escape. No injuries were reported. The driver of the Ford Escape was issued a violation ticket for following too closely.

• On Tuesday, June 18th at about 5 p.m., police were called to a disturbance between two men at a residence off Highway 93/95 north of Invermere. Two neighbours had been involved in an argument which escalated into an as-

sault. One adult male was arrested for assault and uttering threats and released the following morning on conditions.

• On Wednesday, June 19th at 6:15 a.m., police received a report of a shed on fire at the Canyon RV Resort in Radium Hot Springs. An employee awoke to find an equipment storage shed on fire. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire before it spread to nearby trees. The cause of the fire remains under investigation but it is not considered suspicious.

• On Sunday, June 23rd, a resident on Kootenay Number 3 Road in Windermere reported her 1998 Volkswagen Beetle had been vandalized and the owner suspected someone had kicked the car. Police continue to investigate.

• On Sunday, June 23rd at about 10 p.m., police received a report of a commercial transport truck passing unsafely on Highway 93/95 near Windermere. An officer located the truck and after speaking to the driver, the officer issued the driver a warning for the unsafe pass. When driving complaints are received and they’re not witnessed by a police officer, the witness will be asked if they’re prepared to attend court. If the witness does not wish to attend court to defend a violation ticket and there is no other evidence to support a violation ticket, the responding officer will generally issue a warning to the offending driver.

Summer Reading Club is almost here and boy oh boy am I ever excited! Summer Reading Club, or SRC, is probably my favourite program at the library. It has a special place in my heart because when I was 11 or 12, a friend and I volunteered as helpers for Summer Reading Club. I loved helping the younger kids with crafts and games, and I even got to read a few stories to the group, making me feel like a real librarian. And look at me now! I have now helped run SRC since 2015, and it is still just as much fun as it was when I was 12, if not more so. This year’s SRC will be brought to you by our wonderful UBC Co-op student, Rhiannon Wallace, and myself.

The theme this year is “Imagine the Possibilities,” and the possibilities are endless for the fun we are going to have!

There will be two weekly, drop-in programs: Wednesdays from 1:30-3 p.m., July 3-August 21st, designed for kids going into grade 5-grade 7; and Thursdays from 1:30-3 p.m., July 4-August 22nd, designed for kids finished Kindergarten-grade 4. Younger children are welcome to attend if accompanied by an adult. Each week will have a new theme, such as “Superheroes and Make-Believe” and “Reach for the Stars” with activities, games, and stories. A local man made a wildly inaccurate assumption and received a hefty fine for his punishment.

Columbia Valley Conservation Officer (CO) Greg Kruger said the incident involved the improper removal of a fawn.

A man was up around Paddy Ryan Lakes when he spotted a fawn lying on the side of the road by itself. He saw ravens flying in the area, so assumed the mother was dead. He decided to take the fawn and brought it into town. Not only that, but he walked it into a local liquor store to pick up some beer, showing the fawn off to other patrons while he did so, said CO Kruger. CO Service attended the man’s apartment, who said he did try calling the RAPP line but “it was too complicated.”

CO Kruger said he told the offender he had made a poor judgment call by walking around downtown Invermere with this fawn, by not contacting the CO

Service, and, of course, for taking it in the first place.

The officer went back to the area where the man had found the deer and set an electronic fawn call in that location.

“Within 20 seconds a whitetail doe came running to it, so I let the fawn out,” CO Kruger said. “When we went back, the fawn had been reunited.”

The man was fined $345 for unlawful possession of wildlife. Mr. Kruger encourages anyone who finds what appears to be a fawn, or any other animal, left on its own, to not disturb it. Instead, call the RAPP line.

“If you find what you perceive as orphaned wildlife, please leave it,” CO Kruger urges. “Let the COS know about it. We’ll make the determination whether it is in fact orphaned and needs to be rescued.”

Believing survivors helps them heal

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com When a group of friends visited Fairmont in March 2018 to celebrate Melanie Ykema’s birthday, the weekend ended with a police visit and friendships broken beyond repair. That’s because when Ms. Ykema and a friend – Zachary Welch – were alone in a sauna, he groped her without her consent.

“He didn’t rape me, but what he did left me feeling helpless. I had to come forward to stand up for myself,” she told the Pioneer.

Ms. Ykema lost friends after the assault, which was handled in Invermere Law Courts last week. She said two of her friends said she: “was overreacting to the situation and that calling the cops was an ‘immature’ thing to do.”

Recalling the pain she felt from how they responded to her, she said: “I cannot understand how people who I trusted and thought were my friends were so quick to erase me from their lives when I didn’t even do anything.”

I too lost a friend after telling her about a sexual assault that broke my brain and left me with post-traumatic stress disorder. My friend told me: “Get over it. That’s just what happens.”

We cause survivors further harm when we don’t believe them and when we don’t listen to them with empathy. A negative response can make them feel like they must be crazy and can teach them that it isn’t safe to talk about what they endured.

A guide from the Ending Violence Assocation of B.C. says some “common pitfalls” people can fall into when a survivor tells them they were assaulted include being judgemental, not believing them and questioning their actions.

“How you respond to a disclosure is critical to a survivor’s well-being and recovery,” the guide says. “How you react to their disclosure can have a significant influence on how they make sense of what has happened to them, and could affect what they do or do not do next.”

According to the guide, the best way to respond when someone trusts you enough to share about their experience is to listen to your friend, believe that person and support him or her in moving forward however he or she chooses.

“Remember that the survivor is telling you because they see you as a safe and trustworthy person,” it says.

Say no to boat storage on Athalmer road Dear Editor: The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) has a bylaw amendment application (Bad Toro Properties Ltd.) that proposes to permit boat/RV storage on C-2 zoned lands along Athalmer Road, on the entranceway to Invermere. During the Lake Windermere Official Community Plan (LWOCP) planning process, the public, Windermere Community Association and the LWOCP Advisory Group all indicated they do not want boat, RV and self-storage facilities in commercial areas. Storage should only be permitted in industrial areas like other municipalities. “Spot zoning” to allow boat/RV storage as proposed in this development should be refused because: • It removes commercial lands necessary to meet future needs.

• Commercial uses generate more jobs and contribute to the local economy far more than storage facilities.

• It negatively impacts tourism by reducing the natural beauty and scenic views that attract tourists.

• The boat/RV storage will not be temporary, as the developer has stated, and will likely remain for up to 10 years.

The public has clearly spoken on this issue. The RDEK Board of Directors should require the developer to move the proposed boat/RV storage off Athalmer Road and put it on a part of their site which is not visible to those travelling to Invermere.

Organ donations work. I know because I had Rheumatic Fever as a child and my heart became damaged.

Lucky for me, 27 years ago on July 1st, 1992, I received a heart transplant

and have been thankful every wonderful day since. Without a transplant, doctors told me that I had a maximum of six weeks of life remaining.

Financial burdens jeopardize former DTSS grad’s dreams

By Breanne Massey Special to the Pioneer A love of science has fuelled a lifelong pursuit of academics in physics for an East Kootenay native.

Kyla Smith, an alumna of David Thompson Secondary School graduating class of 2003 in Invermere, has been accepted to the University of Oxford to complete a Ph.D. in Education focusing on physics education in the United Kingdom.

“My proposal is on the shortage of physics teachers,” said Ms. Smith. “There’s actually an international shortage… what I’d like to do is learn about it there, then study the shortage that we have in Canada.”

Physics is the study of matter and energy, and it helps explain how much of our world and the universe work. Her goal is to conduct physics education research in Canada after learning new approaches and methods from some of the world’s most renowned teachers in educational research. With the long-term dream of working with Ministries of Education in Canada to implement changes to the curriculum and the recruitment of physics teachers in Canada, Ms. Smith is focused on evaluating the shortage of physics teachers closer to home.

“I think the shortage is due, in part, to that not many people go into physics, then there aren’t many teachers for the younger generation and the cycle continues,” said Ms. Smith.

In 2008, Ms. Smith graduated from the University of Victoria (UVic) with a double-major in Physics and English. She went on to complete a Bachelor of Education for secondary school education with a specialty in Classroom Diversity at UVic in 2011.

Her latest completed credential was a Master of Science in physics in 2019 at the University of Manitoba (U of M) where physics captured Ms. Smith’s energy.

She received six awards from various governing bodies in 2018, including First Place in the Division of Physics in Medicine and Biology from the Canadian Association of Physicists Congress.

According to the Winnipeg CBC, Ms. Smith requires $120,000 CAD for four years of tuition and fees to complete a doctorate in the United Kingdom as this distinctive program is currently not offered in Canada.

She hopes to raise $37,000 CAD to cover the first-year tuition and fees on a GoFundMe Campaign that was created by her colleagues in Manitoba.

“It’s a really huge and scary number,” she said, indicating it’s a daunting task.

“I feel so touched that they set up the GoFundMe for me. It’s making my dream of going to Oxford possible.”

After completing the Oxford program, Ms. Smith plans to return to Canada to help share her passion for physics in a wide variety of programming.

“We have a real problem with a lack of women in physics,” she explained. “The numbers are really low, and it’s stagnating at a very low percentage. That’s a big part of the rationale as to why I’m doing what I’m doing… if physics were more accessible, then we could have a more diverse set of physicists. That’s what’s driving me.”

Her brother Fraser Smith alerted the Pioneer about the GoFundMe campaign.

“She is an inspirational teacher and a passionate physicist, and she aims to help encourage more young people to pursue this important field. Physics is currently a male-dominated career and Kyla has been a leader in this country in trying to figure out why that is and how to change it,” said Mr. Smith.

Bears get a lot of press coverage, especially when they make their way into our communities. Ideally, a bear would simply pass through town en route to better foraging opportunities. Occasionally however, these shortterm visitors overstay their welcome.

A bear that is able to access human-provided food can, and often does, become food conditioned. That means that a rogue bear, who just had an easy meal out of an unlocked dumpster, will begin to associate humans with food.

These animals become habituated. They lose their wariness of us, and allow people to come closer to them than they otherwise would in the wild. This can lead to a dangerous interaction and is often the root of human-wildlife conflicts within a community setting.

Human-wildlife conflicts come in all shapes and sizes however. Not all nuisance animals make the weekly news. Take rodents for example. Mice, squirrels, and pack rats can all pose problems by creating significant property damage while in search of food and nesting sites.

Just like bears, rodents are attracted to your yard by human-provided food sources. Fruit, compost, and birdfeeders are just a few common attractants that can lure wildlife in. Did you know that a birdfeeder holding seven pounds of seed contains nearly twenty thousand calories? When we feed birds, it is important to remember that a nutritionally dense food source is also being made available to other wildlife species in the area.

When food is abundant and conditions are favourable, rodents will reproduce prolifically. One rodent nesting in your roof is a nuisance. An infestation, however, is a problem most people would rather avoid. Prevent property damage and control pest populations by controlling food sources. Keep garbage securely stored, feed pets indoors, take birdfeeders down in the evening and hang feeders during winter months only, and, lastly, manage your compost properly and turn regularly These are just a few steps that you can take to create a WildSafe yard. Hundreds of cyclists rendezvoused recently at Panorama Mountain Resort for the Branch Out Neurological Foundation’s flagship event, the ninth annual Branch Out Bike Tour.

The tour started at Panorama and traveled down to the floor of the Columbia Valley, winding its way around Lake Windermere and returning to Panorama. Riders chose between completing the 80, 100, or 160 kilometre distances. To participate, riders committed to raising a minimum of $300 each. After the ride, a celebratory barbecue at the finish line took place with riders cheering each other on while enjoying a burger and a well-deserved beer. The barbecue was followed by a gala dinner, silent auction, and awards ceremony with a special presentation about the neuroscience supported by each rider’s fundraising efforts.

To date, Branch Out has raised nearly $3 million for alternative brain research through events like the Branch Out Bike Tour, and funded over 52 research projects.

“This year, the event raised about a quarter of a million dollars to support research into alternative ways of combating the more than 600 diseases that affect the nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease,” said the Foundation’s Executive Director and Co-Founder Crystal Phillips. “One in three Canadians are directly impacted by neurological disorder, and the Branch Out Foundation is helping to find innovative and alternative solutions to keep brains at their best.”

Ms. Phillips is a former Olympic hopeful speed skater who fell short of her Olympic dream after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in her late teens. Drug therapy, with its horrible side effects and minimal impact, wasn’t cutting it for her. She needed to make a change.

Ms. Phillips decided to take a more natural approach by focusing on nutrition, herbal medicine, massage, acupuncture, chiropractic and neurofeedback training. Her natural healing journey coupled with the drive and tenacity required to be an elite athlete led her to create the Branch Out Neurological Foundation.

“Not only did I feel better, but it made sense to me. I realized that there were a few gaps in the system: a lack of high-quality research, awareness and credibility for some of the more natural approaches to healing the nervous system.”

The profile of the event is growing with each year.

Nine Olympians this year participated including speed skater Denny Morrison and snowboarder Ross Rebagliati. Tyler Hamilton was also a part of the Branch Out peloton. At one time, Mr. Hamilton was one of the world’s

At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Mr. Hamilton won a gold medal in an individual time trial event. His success however came crashing down after he tested positive for performance enhancing drugs. In 2010, the United Stated Federal Government subpoenaed Ms. Hamilton. He became the first pro-cyclist of his calibre to break what was known in the world of cycling as the omertà (Italian for code of silence). Next came an award winning tell-all memoir about his time in cycling, Lance was on Oprah, and the rest is history. Today, Mr. Hamilton leads a quiet life from his home in Missoula, Montana and is eager to help support events for a cause like the Branch Out Tour.

“I grew up wanting to be a ski racer and idolized Jimmie Heuga. Jimmie was the first ever American to medal in alpine skiing at the 1964 Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria. When I suffered a career-ending injury in college, that’s when switched from skiing and took up cycling seriously. Later I learned Jimmie was diagnosed with MS and I really loved his exercise and activity centric approach to battling the disease. When Crystal [Phillips] contacted me to join on the Branch Out Tour, it was a no-brainer for me to help raise the profile of her organization’s efforts.”

Through the Foundation’s annual grants and NeuroCAM program, Branch Out aims to accelerate tech solutions and non-pharmaceutical approaches to neurological disorders, and supports top neuroscientists exploring alternative brain research.

Grand opening today at Valley’s new rec centre

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com The Columbia Lake Recreation Centre is hosting an official grand opening today (Thusday, June 27). The centre has been open for a couple months but now the Akisq’nuk First Nation is ready to formally open the doors to the public after a public soft opening in April.

The public event runs from 6-8 p.m. and includes traditional foods and music, informal sports demonstrations, history of the centre, and recognition of the donors that helped make the recreation centre possible.

The Columbia Lake Recreation Society (CLRS) registered in January 2019 to run the centre. The vision statement of the CLRS is that “they will honour the athletes of yesterday by supporting those of today and tomorrow,” said Heather Rennebohm, Akisq’nuk economic development officer and member of the board of directors. Other board members on the CLRS include Jason Nicholas, Lola Nicholas, Mary Jimmy, Chantelle Jimmy, and advisory members Clara Reinhardt and Karl Sterzer.

The Regional District of East Kootenay Board of Directors approved funding for 144 projects around the region for the coming year through the Columbia Basin Trust Community Initiatives and Affected Areas program. The Columbia Lake Recreation Society was one of the recipients, . . . ‘Branching’ from 12 “There is a growing interest in alternative approaches for treating neurological disorders,” said Ms. Phillips, “We’ve coined the termed NeuroCAM [Neuroscience + Complementary & Alternative Modalities] as we seek to fill this gap in the scientific literature by funding innovative and high-quality science that explores nutraceuticals, mind-body, tech, and personalized medicine as it relates to the nervous system.”

According to the project explanation, the funding is for the ‘start-up and promotions of Valley-wide sports, recreation and leisure programs’.

Ms. Rennebohm said the plan is to look for partnership opportunities across the Columbia Valley as time goes by though, right now, the focus is on programming at the Columbia Lake Recreation Centre. Currently, the main user of the centre is the pickleball association.

Other local organizations or projects that received funding from CBT’s Community Initiatives and Areas program included $30,169 to the Canal Flats Community Society for a community pavilion; $9,500 went to the Columbia Valley Food Bank to buy fridges, freezers and furniture for the new food bank. Sports groups, including the Rockies, the skating club and the youth soccer association, all got a boost, while other nonprofits such as the Canal Flats Food Bank Society, the Columbia Lake Stewardship Society, and Columbia Valley Arts Council received funding as well.

Branch Out believes that supporting NeuroCAM research conducted at the highest scientific standards will, through time, generate reliable data for physicians, patients, and allow for informed decisions about all possible treatment options.

“Our mission is for a world free from neurological disorders,” she said.

Nancy Sorensen, artist extraordinaire, ran a paintbrush over our shared canvas, passed the brush to me and said it was my turn. There was nothing on the paintbrush yet but water – step one is to water the canvas so the paint slides more easily across it – but it was still intimidating to hold a master’s paintbrush in my hand.

Luckily I didn’t make any mistakes on that first invisible coat or on the second coat, which was a golden glaze we spread across the canvas.

“Especially in the beginning, you don’t have to fuss with it being perfect and precise. You just want to get the paint on there because you know you can go on top of it again or you can wipe it out,” she said.

When I made a whoops, she told me not to worry about it and dabbed my mistake away.

As we added a mountain range in the distance, Ms. Sorensen did the first few peaks and handed me the bluetipped brush to keep the range going. It’s easy to see where her strokes stopped and mine began because hers are certain and bold with peaks and valleys, while my poor mountains came out as timid as foothills.

Then Ms. Sorensen had me step back from the canvas and check out the painting by Guy Roy that we were attempting to loosely recreate. She asked me to check for where colours or shapes were missing. I thought she would do the fixing, but she encouraged me to dash purples, yellows, browns and reds over the rocks, add in a tilted tree and dab the foreground with life.

By the time our masterpiece was done, it was a cheery burst of colour and something I’m thrilled to hang my wall.

If you paint with Ms. Sorensen – even if you only do a teensy portion of the work – she will send you home with the canvas and let you take full credit for it.

“I try to get the students to do as much as possible, whatever they’re comfortable with,” she said. “What I love and why I keep doing it is to see people get so excited about what they can do.”

As for our creation, she said: “It’s happy and colourful, which is what I like to do. I always gravitate to juicy-looking paintings that make me happy. They speak

Ms. Sorensen has done “hundreds and hundreds” of workshops, even with people who tell her they can’t draw anything besides stick figures. She respectfully disagrees.

“Everyone says they can only draw stick figures, but most people can get dressed in the morning and put on something that looks alright,” she said. “Anyone can do it, especially stick-figure people.”

To prove her point, she added: “You were really nervous about doing it and tentative and thinking ‘I can’t do this,’ but when I broke it down into those little steps for you, it didn’t seem so daunting.”

Ms. Sorensen is one of six artists displaying her work in a show at Pynelogs Art Gallery and Cultural Centre that will run until July 13th. But Ms. Sorensen is interested in more than showing off her creations; she wants to help you make your own too.

She is offering two-hour painting sessions at the gallery for aspiring artists. The one-on-one or two-on-one sessions are $100 per person, with 35 per cent going back to Columbia Valley Arts. Slots are available the first two Fridays and Saturdays in July.

She’s also offering sessions out of her home studio throughout the summer.

Award of excellence for Windermere Valley Snowmobile Society Submitted by Windermere Valley Snowmobile Society On June 8th, the Canadian Council of Snowmobile Organizations (CCSO) hosted their annual Excellence Awards in Grand Rapids, Michigan as part of the International Snowmobile Congress with over three hundred delegates in the room from across Canada and the United States. The CCSO Excellence Awards are a National Award to honour individuals, snowmobile clubs, associations and businesses in Canada that have made a significant contribution towards showcasing the popularity and the overall appeal of the sport, have made a remarkable effort to promote solidarity and responsibility within the snowmobile community or who have offered exceptional quality of service to snowmobilers.

The CCSO Excellence Award for Outstanding Snowmobile Club was awarded to the Windermere Valley Snowmobile Society (WVSS). The club was awarded for having distinguished itself as a club that promotes safety and quality snowmobile opportunities in the Windermere Valley. The club leadership have worked closely with other trail users to develop quality recreational opportunities in the community. The club recently spent significant time and energy developing a plan for its future and has started applying for grants to invest in equipment and additional

infrastructure. The club’s work resulted in an increase to local membership and the number of tourists riding their trails. This award shows that a small club can have a large impact on a community but also the sport of snowmobiling in Canada, overall.

WVSS president Gary Prosser said that this comes from the past few years of hard work that the Board of Directors put in and its membership engagement. Mr. Prosser says that he couldn’t be more pleased to receive such a prestigious award. This will be a big benefit to our local businesses as snowmobilers contribute a large amount on fuel, accommodations and meals during the winter season and helps increase tourism to our communities, he said.

The CCSO is a volunteer-led, not-for-profit national organization which, through strong leadership, provides support to our members and provides the unified voice of organized snowmobiling at the national and international levels. The CCSO envisions that across Canada, organized snowmobile trail networks and riding areas provide a lasting legacy of responsible riding experiences that are highly valued, safe, enjoyable, sustainable and environmentally friendly. The CCSO strives to represent all organized snowmobiling Canadian jurisdictions to maintain a national understanding of the needs and expectations of snowmobilers across Canada.

Always a whirlwind, she whips around La Galeria II while she talks about her recent expansion and the grand celebration planned for this weekend to commemorate the growth.

When Ms. Barzilay first opened La Galeria II, it was in a space around 600 square feet. When she moved to her current location in the Fairmont Hot Springs strip mall, it became 1,000 square feet. But, not content to rest on her current success, Ms. Barzilay decided to knock the wall down between her shop and the neighbouring location two months ago. She now has a remarkable 2,000 square feet filled with everything you can imagine.

“I have umbrellas that have ears for the kids. I have floaties and goggles and water shoes,” she lists. “I’ve got

beach stuff and bathing suits. I’ve got a dino poncho towel for the kids. Donut towels. Shark towels. Pizza and watermelon and orange and hamburger towels. I’ve got sunhats and decks of cards and puzzles and anklets. I have everything!”

She carries underwear, socks, and sandals. Hawaiian shirts and men’s dress shirts. Tiaras for your grandbaby and the shoes to match it too. A heavyweight in La Galeria II is the popular Nelson-based clothing brand Blue Sky Clothing. With clients returning again and again for the latest Blue Sky offerings, Ms. Barzilay said it accounts for probably half her business now. The clothing is made from bamboo, so it is sustainable, durable, and very soft, she explains.

“Nine years and this just keeps getting bigger. I’m going where it leads me,” she muses of her store. “It’s the funnest store in the Valley.”

She brings in unique works of art, from framed and

unframed prints, paintings and photographs, hand-knit dolls, hand-painted terra cotta vases from Mexico and hand-knit sweaters from a co-op in Ecuador.

Ms. Barzilay is an artist too. She paints wine glasses and porcelain as a creative outlet. She sells her products in her own store and others across the Columbia Valley, into Cranbrook and even Alberta. By blending spectacular colours, Ms. Barzilay creates elegant, sophisticated stemware, porcelain mugs, glassware, decanters, candleholders and anything else made of glass.

La Galeria II will be having a special celebration this Saturday, June 29th. There will be great deals on the fun summer stuff including flip flops and floaties, beach balls and bathing suits. There will be three hours of super specials, from 1-4 p.m. Come into the store that day to find out what the deals are.

Poet from Valley wins Indigenous Voices Award

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Smokii Sumac, who was raised in the Valley, won the 2019 Indigenous Voices Award in Published Poetry in English earlier in June for his book You are Enough: love poems for the end of the world.

Mr. Sumac is a two-spirit poet, activist, scholar and proud member of the Ktunaxa nation.

Winning the award was “super, super exciting,” he said. “It’s all Indigenous run, and so that feels really special.”

His award was presented by Dr. Jeannette Armstrong, an acclaimed Indigenous writer, educator and spokesperson for Indigenous rights. As she announced the award, she read a few of Mr. Sumac’s lines: “the

mountains told me/ carry knowing in your body/ dream this knowing home.”

Mr. Sumac said he was overcome with emotion when he heard one of the “aunties” of Indigenous literature recite his words.

“She’s such a powerful voice and has been working so hard to be a champion of Indigenous literature so to have her as somebody that I’ve looked up to, somebody that I’ve read for so many years... to be like reading my lines to announce my book was unreal,” he said.

While he is grateful for the award and that You are Enough is already in its second print run, that’s not how he defines success. Instead he weighs his impact based on how his words are resonating with others.

of around 50 guests in the winter, one person who approached him afterwards validated all of his efforts.

“I have some sexy poems. I have poems about being trans that don’t shy away from talking about what that means. And so this person, they said to me: ‘you doing this and reading those poems makes it a little bit easier for me to be me here and to live here,’” he said. “That’s why I do the work I do... I wanted to just show that I’m proud and that it’s possible to become something, do something and be totally who you are in yourself.”

In a press release, his publisher, Kegedonce Press, said: “This collection addresses the grief of being an Indigenous person in Canada, shares timely (and sometimes hilarious) musings on consent, sex, and gender, and through it all, helps us come to know that we are enough, just as we are.”

Watershed Wanderings

By Shannon McGinty, program coordinator, and Keri Malanchuk, summer student Lake Windermere Ambassadors The Lake Windermere Ambassadors have started our annual Water Monitoring Program and will be out on the lake and creeks performing a variety of tests over the next few months. Our sampling program has run for almost 10 years now - but do you know what we are looking for?

We have three locations on the lake to test for temperature, pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, depth, turbidity and monthly nutrient tests. Additionally, Interior Health supports the Ambassadors in testing for E.coli at Kinsmen Beach, James Chabot Provincial Park, and Windermere Beach. Long term monitoring is one of the best tools environmental scientists have in their tool box. Weekly monitoring can give us insight into the effects of short-term disruptive events, such as flooding or a sewage line break, as well as long-term impacts on ecosystem health, due to climate change or human activities. Lake Windermere is part of a much larger water system and due to its high demands for recreation, aquatic life, and public water supply, it is essential to ensure it continues to flow in good health.

One of the most important parameters we measure is the temperature. Water temperature can vary dramatically throughout the year but usually reaches its peak in August.

Temperature is vastly important to fish and invertebrates as their body temperature and ability to function are controlled by their environment. If water temperature is outside their required ranges it can cause great physical stress resulting in population decline or relocation, which has major implications on the health of the lake. Warm water temperatures are nice for swimming, but they may also promote the growth of organic material such as algae and bacteria.

An increase in decaying organic material can cause taste and odour problems in the lake as well as negatively affecting chlorination. The Ambassadors have installed a continuous temperature logger in the lake to gain greater insight into what temperatures Lake Windermere reaches in the height of the summer.

In addition to weekly monitoring on Lake Windermere, we have initiated a monitoring program on some of the creeks that flow into the lake. On Windermere Creek and Abel Creek we look at the same parameters tested on the lake and water flow. Understanding the flow of water in the creeks has become more important in recent years due to the affects of climate change seen in the Columbia Valley.

In 2018 the Ambassadors were fortunate enough to receive funding to install continuous flow loggers on Windermere Creek, Abel Creek, and the outflow of the Columbia River. Data collected with these devices will be compared to historic data collected by decommissioned Ministry of Environment monitoring site to understand the what the current state of Lake Windermere and it’s tributaries are.

The East Kootenay Invasive Species Council (EKISC)

support monitoring efforts by conducting monthly tests for Aquatic Invasive Species. Lake Windermere is one of 11 lakes EKISC tests for veligers (invasive mussel larvae) and invasive plants thanks to funding from the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation. The Ambassadors will supplement this sampling by installing substrate samplers at six different sites on the lake that will be checked monthly for the growth of invasive mussels. Although this monitoring is extremely important, the best way to protect Lake Windermere and the surrounding areas from invasive species is to clean, drain, and dry all water crafts and stop at all inspection sites.

We sample Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday mornings and always welcome volunteers to join us to become citizen scientists. We are all connected to this watershed in more than one way, whether it be exploring, swimming, boating, or simply taking a sip from the tap, we all have the responsibility to ensure the health of the water for future generations.

By Lorene Keitch Lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Jonathan Welsh and Mylene Lefebvre own ION2 Progression Suspension, a business dedicated solely to the expert repair, maintenance, upgrades, and custom tuning of suspensions for mountain bikes and motorized toys.

The couple have been running the specialized business out of their home for the past two years. That was a good launching ground as they worked to grow the business from the safety of a cost-effective location while working at other jobs. Almost all their work was shipped in, thanks to a solid internet presence and a niche service so rare they have had suspensions shipped to them from as far away as the Yukon and Manitoba. At least half their business comes from bicycle retailers, who will send them customer bikes with suspension issues to fix.

The company has now grown to the point where Mr. Welsh was ready to leave other employment to commit full-time to ION2, and they opened a commercial space in downtown Invermere just over two months ago.

The new space not only gave room for ION2 to continue servicing bicycle suspensions and invite drop-in business, but also to expand into motor sports. They can work on dirt bikes, sleds, quads, motorbikes and more.

At ION2, owners can book in same-day service, and they keep inventory on-site to get bikes back to their riders as soon as possible.

“We know how important it is, that people don’t want to be left without their bikes,” said Ms. Lefebvre.

Mr. Welsh and Ms. Lefebvre know first-hand the importance of keeping up with repairs and maintenance on bikes and motorized equipment.

“We’re really into mountain biking ourselves, and we used to do a lot of motorbike as well,” said Mr. Welsh.

Mr. Welsh and Ms. Lefebvre were both part of the original membership that started the Columbia Valley Cycling Society, and helped sanction many of the trails in the area. They also used to race. Mr. Welsh has been in the bike maintenance business for more than 20 years, and helped to build many of the bike trails at Panorama Mountain Resort when he worked there.

Ms. Lefebvre works as a Union Cyclist International Commissaire – a referee for UCI bike races, overseeing registration checks, course inspection, monitoring incidents, verifying results, and more.

They are fully committed to providing the best suspension service they can. Mr. Welsh attends workshops and travels to the companies they service to keep up to date on the best techniques to service each type of suspensions.

“I just took it on my own and went to visit all the main brands that I service,” said Mr. Welsh. “There’s a way to just fix suspension. But to do it to the level I do it, it needs to be taught by the guys that actually built it.”

So, what are the biggest issues the couple sees when it comes to bike and motorized equipment suspensions?

“Lack of preventative maintenance is mostly the main issue,” said Mr. Welsh.

Especially for motorbikes, they find every time they touch a suspension, it’s way past due the recommended service schedule.

ION2 is located at 1A - 1005 7th Ave. Invermere (around the corner from the old Bicycle Works shop). They are typically open Monday to Friday by appointment.

But starting this Saturday, June 29th until August 24th, they will also be open Saturdays from 9-12 p.m.

Mountain Mosaic Festival

By Molly McLellan Assistant Curator Another wonderful Mountain Mosaic festival of the arts is just around the corner at Pynelogs on Monday, July 1st.

Come down to check out the fantastic main stage where Frank Rackow & the Black Sea, and Rollin’ Dean & the Postmistress will be sure to entertain.

As always, the day will kick off at noon with ‘Oh Canada’ and a cake cutting ceremony lead by our mayor, Al Miller.

There will be tonnes of delicious food vendors including Roi Hot Dogs, the Hungry Rooster, Me & the White Guys Frybreads, and C&L Snack Shack. With plenty of options spanning corn dogs, tacos, pero-

gies, hot dogs, frybread (bannock), and smokies there’s bound to be an option for everyone in your family. Finish your meal off with cotton candy from Sweet Pa’s Street Treats as you browse through the creative tents.

The fireworks launch below the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena (once all the trains are safely through the area). Enjoy the view from anywhere in town. For a truly memorable experience, find a watercraft and take to the lake for a magical viewing experience - just use your boat smarts for getting safely back to shore.

Monday, July 1st is the Canada Day parade! Parade entrants will from on 9th Avenue beside Pothole park at 10 a.m. The parade starts from 5A street at 11 a.m. It marches through Main Street then down to Kinsmen Beach, with disperal at the east end parking lot.

With cake cutting, live music, drumming circles, and more, play all afternoon at Kinsmen Beach (see the details on this Mountain Mosaic Festival in story at left).

The day wraps up with the kickoff to the popular summer movie series, Movies in the Mountains. Bring down your blanket and cozy up with your friends to watch the first movie of the season - the classic Mike Myers film Wayne’s World. “Party time, excellent!”

There’s so much going on in the world of the Columbia Valley Food Bank (CVFB), including the new building (more of that later) that this month we thought we’d just share some ideas, events, and updates.

We are members of both Food Banks BC and Food Banks Canada, and they frequently send us interesting information.

Did you know that the average Canadian meal weighs 1 pound (453 grams), and that $1 donated to a food bank can buy 3 lbs of food to share, which equals 3 meals for an individual? These numbers are a valid reflection of the National Network, including Food Banks Canada national office.

These two organizations also provide us with updates to clear up the confusion about ‘Best Before’ and ‘Expiry’ dates.

Best before date labels are about overall quality, and are a company’s promise that when stored properly an unopened product will keep its wholesomeness, flavour and nutritional value until the stated date.

Expiry dates are required on only a small set of foods, such as infant formula, meal replacement drinks, etc., and unopened products will contain their nutritional content shown on the label at least until the specified date. Many foods that have best before dates can be eaten and shared past the date if they have been stored properly. At the CVFB, we will not hand out any goods more than a year past their best

before date. We will not on any occasion hand out foods that have passed their expiry date. Best before dates and expiry dates are only required on some products, and many foods that have them do not need them. Putting dates on such products may actually cause products whose quality is acceptable to be discarded, leading to food waste. If you would like more information you can contact Food Banks Canada for a copy of their guidelines.

We hope you and your families will show up for the Canada Day Parade in Invermere which starts at 11 a.m. Food bank representatives and kids will be marching near the beginning of the parade, collecting cash donations and handing out “Canada Canes” and other goodies.

Future events during the summer include movie nights at Eagle Ranch and the annual Show ‘n’ Shine in Radium on September 14th. For those looking way ahead Copper Point’s Feed the Town and a visit from the Holiday Train will occur in December.

The new building, the Albert Cooper Building, is moving on apace, and we hope to hold a grand opening of the 1,550 square foot facility in mid-September. Prior to that we may need to hold an old-fashioned work bee to get all the materials transferred from the basement of the old building into the shelves of the new.

There may be a plaintive call for extra volunteers at that time! Any individuals or groups interested in directing donations specifically to the building are welcome to contact us.

Finally, a special thanks to Ken Willimont, our project manager, for his amazing work at moving this dream forward, and to the District of Invermere Council, administration and staff for their incredible support of this project.

S OBITUARY S Conklin, Rodney Craig

March 27, 1937 – June 17, 2019 Dr. Rodney C. Conklin passed away peacefully in Invermere, British Columbia on June 17, 2019.

Rod was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the son of Mary and George Conklin. He attended Central High School in Calgary and received his B.Ed., M.Ed. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Alberta, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma.

From 1961 to 1992, Rod was married to Dorothy Hughes and had three children - Darrell, Todd and Tanya. Rod then met and married Dee Waldorf and helped raise Dee’s two sons, Matt and Drew.

Dr. Conklin was a psychologist and an educator. He taught at Crescent Heights High School in Calgary and then became a Professor Emeritus of Educational Psychology at the University of Calgary. In 1985, Rod and his friend Dr. Jack Collett founded Rundle College. Dr. Conklin was Rundle’s Superintendent from 1985 to 2007; and he faithfully served on the Board of Directors for 34 years.

After retiring from Rundle, Rod studied to become a wine expert. Rod and Dee owned and operated CasaVino, a wine and tapas bar in Radium Hot Springs that was frequented by their many friends and visitors to the Columbia Valley. Rod enjoyed gardening, golf, travelling with friends, reading and the pleasure of being with his family. He was an avid Canadian coin collector, a hobby from childhood when he delivered newspapers to further his numismatic interests. Rod was an active member of the Columbia Valley Men’s Book Club, and his taste in books ran to the historical and the philosophical.

Rod was humble, kind and generous. In addition to being a positive role model at Rundle, Rod was a mentor to many people who were searching for purpose, meaning and focus in their lives.

Rod is survived by his beloved wife Dee; his children Tanya Ormond (Wayne) and Darrell Conklin; his stepsons Matt Waldorf (Holly) and Drew Waldorf (Taryn); his grandchildren Evan, Cameron, Natasha, Rodney and Sydney; his sister Marianne Johnston (Gordon); his brother Howard Conklin (Anita); and many nieces, nephews, cousins and treasured friends. Rod was pre-deceased by his son Todd Conklin and his brother Terry Conklin.

A memorial service will be held on Friday July 5th from 4 – 6 pm at the Radium Hot Springs Centre - 4863 Stanley Street.

Rundle College Society will be hosting a Celebration of Life in Calgary in the fall of 2019.

S OBITUARY S Low, Kim The Low, Reid, Rauch and Carlow families are saddened with the sudden loss of Kim Low, nee Kim Reid, youngest daughter and sister. Kim passed away suddenly on June 7th.

Kim is survived by her loving husband Terry and daughters Carly (Sheldon and grandson Ryder) and Meaghan. Also, Mother Kathy Reid, wife of the late Ted Reid, two sisters, Karen (James) Rauch, Elizabeth (Ken) Carlow and nieces and nephew, Samantha, Melanie, Christine and Ben. Kim was a hardworking wife and mom, always there with love and support. She loved her garden and pool in the summer.

Kim’s downtime in the winter was spent reading and puzzling.

Kim would always rise to the challenge of planning amazing parties for friends and family, from which many good times and stories come from.

Kim will be so missed by family and friends as she was dearly loved.

Canada’s FireSmart expert comes to Invermere

Submitted by CastleRock FireSmart Committee Residents in a neighbourhood of Invermere have been paying attention to recent years of unprecedented wildfires in British Columbia and Alberta. They understand that wind-driven embers can travel up to 4 km from the edge of a fire, causing almost 90 per cent of home ignitions during a wildfire event.

On Sunday, July 21st, residents of CastleRock Estates will gather in their local park to learn from one of Canada’s leading experts on wildland/urban interface fires. Alan Westhaver is a consultant and owner for ForestWise Environmental Consulting Ltd., who retired from Parks Canada after 34 years, 27 of those as Senior Wildfire Manager. Mr. Westhaver is a past President/Director of Partners in Protection and co-chaired development of the original manual: FireSmart: Protecting Your Community from Wildfire.

He has authored many reports and conducted several investigations, including having been commissioned by the Institute of Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR) to conduct a forensic study following the May 2016 wildland/ urban interface fire in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

Residents will learn why some homes in the 2016 mega wildfire of Fort McMurray survived while other homes were destroyed.

“Home survival is not random nor a function of luck,” states Mr. Westhaver. “Whether a home is destroyed by an interface wildfire or not, greatly depends on conditions immediately around the structure and the area. In all neighbourhoods studied for Fort McMurray, homes whose owners had adopted FireSmart guidelines survived much more frequently than homes where they had not, despite the extraordinarily harsh conditions.”

Lessons learned for Kelowna, Slave Lake, and Fort McMurray, all show that with proper adoption of FireSmart much of a community’s loss can be reduced. Mr. Westhaver also states, “If people are embracing the FireSmart concepts – such as reducing fuels in and around their homes – the better the chance a neighbourhood has when wildfire arrives in the interface area.”

Jerry McLeod, President, CastleRock Estates Community Association, invites other Valley residents to join CastleRock for this event.

“Like most communities in the Columbia Valley, Cas-

tleRock Estates was built in a new type of closed dense forest, far different from the open grassland/forest land that existed in the Columbia Valley. This dense understory surrounds our homes and puts us at an increased risk of an intense wildfire,” said Mr. McLeod.

Kathleen O’Neill, Co-Chair, FireSmart Committee, added, “Taking simple and affordable actions can help us protect our homes and community survive a wildfire. Although CastleRock Estates is within the boundaries of the

District of Invermere and its Fire Department, we need to be more prepared. The more FireSmart a home and neighbourhood, the greater the chances that firefighters will be successful in protecting property”.

The 3rd Annual FireSmart event in CastleRock runs from 9:30-12 p.m. on Sunday, July 21st, in the new District of Invermere park located between Taynton Trail and Brewer Ridge roads, in Phase 3 of the development.

FireSmart in Fairmont Submitted by Fairmont Community Association With the arrival of wildfire season in B.C., the Community Association of Fairmont Hot Springs has taken the initiative to follow the FireSmart BC program.

They have divided the area into five ‘neighbourhoods’ in an effort to better manage the process of fire risk mitigation. Each area has a volunteer ‘Champion’ to team lead neighbourhood volunteers on fire prevention projects. On Monday, June 17th, a vacant wooded lot on Hot Springs Road was mitigated (removal of dead fall, juniper and other flam-

mable growth, and tree trimming up to two metres from ground level). This reduces the fire risk from wildfire windstorm embers to the adjacent homes and properties. Twelve volunteers came to do this with their chainsaws and cutters - a great way to meet your neighbours and have some meaningful fun. Lara and Adrian McCormack, owners of From Scratch Restaurant here in Fairmont, graciously donated lunch - pizzas, cookies, pop and iced tea - to feed the fine people who came out to do all the work.

Just how do you get that baby of yours to sleep?

After 25 years of delivering babies, the question I deal with the most….how do I get my child to sleep??

There are many, many books out there and when you see that many books on a topic, you know there is no easy answer.

I prefer to deal in sleep concepts as opposed to strict rules: 1) The first 6-8 weeks are all about survival. A newborn has so many adjustments to make physiologically that fitting into your schedule for sleep is not their priority. They will feed every 2-3 hours. Maybe if you are lucky, you’ll get a 4 hour stretch at night (and you might feel AMAZING if you get that). You have to survive this time: nap in the day when the baby naps if you can (if you don’t have another toddler!); let the household chores go to some degree; share duties with a partner if you can

and when possible try and get fresh air during the day.

Medical guidelines advise against co-sleeping but if that is the only way your baby will sleep at this stage…just say to yourself – “ I am surviving” (and make sure loose blankets are kept away from the baby and there is lots of room in the bed).

2) After 2-3 months, hopefully the baby will have a bit of a routine: eat, awake, sleep, eat, awake sleep. This age of a baby usually has an awake time of about 1.5-2 hours. Watch for signs of sleepiness (arching back, yawning, glazed eyes, grumpiness) and try and put them down in a quiet, dark place for a nap. It might not always work.

Remember – these are sleep concepts. This concept is: better daytime sleep generally leads to better night time sleep at this age.

3) Drowsy to sleep as opposed to falling asleep on the breast or bottle then putting down is typically recommended. That way your baby knows it is falling asleep separate from you.

4) Somewhere around 6 months, babies can be guided a bit to a schedule that might fit with yours. Sleep training, also called controlled crying, is where the parents respond to their infant’s cry at increasing intervals to allow independent settling. Sleep training improves

sleep problems with about ¼ improving compared to 1/10 without sleep training. Changes in behavior at this age generally happen within a week. If you decide you are going to go this approach, stick with it. Consistency is what a baby this age needs in order to learn. There is no evidence that sleep training, or letting your baby cry, leads to increased depression or anxiety in your child later in life. There is good evidence that maternal depression scores improve with sleep training.

5) After the age of 6 months, try not to go backwards with night time feeds. Growth spurts can be handled by increasing daytime solids and teething pain doesn’t need food. All-night buffets can interfere with daytime solids and increasing food variety (and your sleep!)

6) Remember – changes in sleep behavior are usually better made before the age of 18 months. If you are happy with the way things are going, don’t change a thing; BUT if you think in the long term you are not going to like the pattern your child is adopting, try to guide them to a more acceptable pattern before 18 months. Between 6-12 months if probably the ideal age. The ideal time – that will be up to you!

New recycling depot opens in Columbia Valley

Regional District of East Kootenay The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) has opened a new Recycle BC Depot at the Columbia Valley Landfill, opening up dozens of new recycling opportunities for Valley residents and visitors.

“Over the years, the recycling regulations in the province have evolved to require producers of recyclable products to be responsible for the recycling and end-of-life management of those products,” explains Environmental Services Manager Kevin Paterson. “The new Recycle BC Depot at the Columbia Valley Landfill provides residents with the ability to recycle a wide range of items that are not accepted in the local yellow bin program. Plus, for every tonne of product the RDEK collects at this depot, we will be compensated, which will save tax dollars for the public.”

Some of the items that are accepted at the new depot include Styrofoam, #7 plastics, milk substitutes, zippered bags like Ziplocs and pet food bags, aerosol cans and more.

Many people will be familiar with some of the older Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programs for things like tires, oil and electronics, where you pay an eco or environmental fee at the store when you buy. That fee is intended to support a system for that product to be

recycled and managed through the end of its life. One of the newer EPR programs is aimed at printed paper and packaging. It is managed by Recycle BC and the eco-fees are charged directly to the producers rather than consumers.

“The Recycle BC Program requires depots to be run with very specific guidelines, including gated and staffed locations,” explains Mr. Paterson. “Our existing yellow bin program does not meet their program specifications, so we have had to get creative as we are committed to increasing recycling opportunities for our residents without costing taxpayers extra.”

The yellow bin system remains in place; however, it only accepts paper, cardboard, tin/aluminum cans, grocery/shopping bags and plastics #1-#6.

“It is very important to understand that this is a new option and a totally separate program from the yellow bin system. People will have to use the Recycle BC Depot if they want to access these new recycling opportunities as we do not have access to the same markets through our yellow bin system,” stresses Mr. Paterson.

The Recycle BC Depot is now open at the Columbia Valley Landfill located at 1884 Windermere Loop Road.

The RDEK opened a depot in Kimberley in March and plans to open depots at other staffed RDEK Transfer Stations later this year.

Public feedback closes soon on draft Lake Windermere OCP Regional District of East Kootenay More than 60 people attended an Open House Sunday June 9th as the draft Lake Windermere Official Community Plan (OCP) was presented.

“The main purpose of the Open House was to introduce the draft OCP, provide copies of the plan and associated maps, and be available to provide clarification, answer questions and receive feedback,” says RDEK Area F Director Susan Clovechok.

“Community involvement is key in this process, so I was pleased to see so many people in attendance.”

The RDEK’s lead planner on the project, Kris Belanger, provided an overview of the draft. All of the information shared at the open house was also posted on a new project page.

“It is important to us to make sure all of the information from the Open House is also available online so that those who were not able to attend have the same opportunity to access the information and provide feedback,” explains Mr. Belanger. “The . . . ‘Aw Rats’ from 10 of course bears. Managing small attractants now will help to avoid larger conflicts later.

If you’re going to do a marathon golf day to support a charitable cause, you could not pick a better location than the Columbia Valley.

Five avid golfers took to the links on Tuesday, June 18th to fundraise for the ALS Society of B.C. at Copper Point Golf Club.

Brian Schall, Scott McClain, Dennis Bradley, Dale Moore, and Kevin Bennett collectively scored 3,279 strokes, 1,004 holes, in 17 hours and 50 minutes of continuous play.

The average time to play each round was one hour and 20 minutes. In that time, they got 124 birdies and four eagles. But the most important figure is what was raised: so far, between online donations and in-person, the Copper Point team raised $6,850!

“A huge shout out to Brett Wilson for challenging us again and supporting our efforts totaling $3,000,” remarked Mr. McClain.

Strawberry summer love From Scratch

By Lara McCormack When I smell strawberries, I think summer and when I taste strawberries, I think love. Their sweet, unmistakable smell that awakes the senses, makes my mouth water and my eyes get bigger as I cannot wait to put that first strawberry of the year from my very own patch into my mouth.

When that happens, I know summer has arrived!

It’s rare to meet someone who does not like strawberries. Everyone has a favourite; in a jam, a pie, chopped up into a salad or a salsa, mixed into vanilla ice cream, dunked in sour cream and rolled in brown sugar, eaten as-is with champagne, or my favourite: being dipped in dark chocolate. Whether you bring out their sweet or savoury side, strawberries are sure to please. This fruit has so many interesting facts about it that I have to admit, I was taken back.

Strawberries are the only fruit that wear their seeds on the outside, with the average berry having over 200 of them. Now you know why you get seeds stuck in your teeth!

To be botanically correct, strawberries aren’t true berries, like blueberries. A berry has its seeds on the inside so each seed on a strawberry is its own separate fruit. Did you know strawberries are members of the rose family? It makes sense as they smell as sweet as they taste.

In Belgium, there is a museum dedicated to strawberries. You can find everything from strawberry jam to strawberry beer in this place. First Nations ate strawberries long before European settlers arrived. As spring’s first fruit, they were a treat, eaten fresh or baked into cornbread. Ancient Romans used strawberries for their medicinal powers. They treated depression, fainting, fever, kidney stones, bad breath and sore throats.

Strawberries are an aphrodisiac. Strawberries help reduce the risk of heart disease and certain cancers as they are low in calories, high in vitamins C, B6, K, fibre, folic acid, potassium and amino acids. Strawberries contain high levels of nitrate that increase your blood and oxygen flow to the muscles. Research shows that loading up on strawberries before exercising gives you greater endurance and burns more calories.

The largest producer is California that grows over 80 per cent of the strawberries in the world marketplace. This equals over 2 billion pounds per year yet every state in the U.S. and every province in Canada grows their own.

Store fresh strawberries by washing them and cut the stem away. However, if you don’t eat them for a few days, keep them in the fridge and wait until before you eat them to clean them as rinsing them speeds up spoiling.

On a chef’s note, your strawberries can also be pickled, especially when picked green or unripe. If your berries are overripe, make jam!

This following recipe uses raw, ripe strawberries and enhances their flavour with the lemon verbena. This plant is a beautiful addition to your edible garden as it’s an herb perfect for also infusing custard for crème brûlée and making flavoured teas. Here the leaves add a gentle citrus note to the meringues, but if you can’t get hold of any, a little finely grated lemon zest will do the trick.

Lemon Verena Pavlova with Strawberry MERINGUES 6 egg whites 180g icing sugar, sifted 180g caster sugar a few tiny lemon verbena leaves SAUCE AND FILLING 375g strawberries, hulled 400ml double cream 2 tablespoons icing sugar 1 vanilla pod, split and seeds scraped TO GARNISH 4 sprigs lemon verbena METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 212°F (100°C). Line a large baking sheet with baking parchment.

2. To make the lemon verbena meringues, use an electric mixer to whisk the egg whites with the caster sugar to stiff peaks. Add the icing sugar and continue to whisk for 4–6 minutes, or until the meringue is smooth and shiny.

Stir in the lemon verbena leaves.

3. Using two large metal spoons, shape a quenelle (eye shape) of the mixture and place it on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat the process to make seven more meringues, spacing them well apart on the baking sheet. Place the meringues in the oven and cook for 2 hours.

4. Remove the meringues from the oven and allow to cool slightly before gently easing them from the baking sheet with a palette knife. Transfer to a wire rack and set

aside.

5. Place 250g of the strawberries in a small food processor and blend until smooth, then pass through a sieve into a bowl to remove the seeds. Thinly slice the remaining strawberries.

6. To make the filling, whip the cream, icing sugar and vanilla seeds together until soft peaks form.

7. To serve, spoon some of the cream onto the base of half of the meringues, top with a few strawberry slices and sandwich together with the remaining meringues. Garnish with the lemon verbena sprigs and serve the strawberry sauce alongside in a bowl.

For plant-based meringue, follow the recipe below and make sauce as above.

INGREDIENTS 1 (15-oz) can chickpeas ¼ tsp cream of tartar Kosher salt ¾ cup superfine sugar METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 250ºF. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment.

2. Strain the chickpeas directly into the bowl of a stand mixer. There should be about 3/4 cup liquid; reserve the chickpeas for another use. Add the cream of tartar and a pinch of salt to the liquid, and beat on medium-high speed until very foamy. While still beating, add the sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, then continue to beat until the mixture forms stiff and glossy peaks, about 4 minutes.

3. Transfer the mixture to a large pastry bag fitted with a large star or round tip, and pipe 2-inch mounds about 2 inches apart onto the prepared baking sheets. Bake until the meringues are set and no longer glossy, about 2 hours, rotating the trays (from top to bottom) halfway through.

Turn the oven off, and let the meringues sit in the closed oven until they have dried out inside, about 1 hour more.

(The meringues will keep in an airtight container for up to 3 days.)

8th Steamboat music fest next weekend

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com John McRobbie is the musical director for the Steamboat Mountain Music Festival. He curates a weekend of music to please the eclectic tastes of attendees. From folk to rock to random, there is truly something for everyone at the little but lively annual event.

This year’s lineup offers a mix of bands from the Valley and elsewhere for the weekend music festival, taking place July 5-7th.

“By popular demand, we’ve got Fraid Knot coming back,” reports Mr. McRobbie, noting that band was at the festival three or four years ago and was a hit.

“They are known as one of Canada’s hardest working Celtic bands,” he describes.

Audience members enjoy the wide range of music at each year’s Steamboat festival, but Mr. McRobbie says towards the end of the day, the biggest hits are always the bands that bring the tempo up and keep the dance music pumping.

“The whole yard is up dancing all over the place,” Mr. McRobbie describes.

Mr. McRobbie sums up the whole event in one simple sentence: “It’s a great event. What more can I say?”

New to Steamboat Mountain Music Festival this year is the Lovebullies. This Calgary-based vintage pop rock band brings a high-energy performance to each show. Band member Caroline Connolly says the feedback they always get from people is that the band is very fun.

“I think that’s because we have fun when we’re playing, and it comes across,” she says.

The four band members have been playing together for more than a decade, with two of them on stage together for more than 20 years. That much time has built up the Lovebullies into a musical family.

“We’ve all been through a great deal together,” says Ms. Connolly. “We have a deep and profound love for each other as human beings. I think that’s why we’ve had this longevity.”

The Lovebullies are currently working on their third record. Their last release was a double vinyl in The Lovebullies will perform a set in Edgewater Saturday, July 2010. Ms. Connolly says at the time, it was quite the effort to get an album done on vinyl, but it was worth 6th followed by a songwriting workshop on Sunday. it for the sound the Lovebullies were looking for with their music.

“We are all audiophiles. We love music, we love the tactile aesthetic of vinyl, and we love the final sound,” she says. Much like the slow food movement, Ms. Connolly explains, vinyl is almost like the slow music movement.

“We’re embracing the old technology, because it’s better . . . it’s warmer, it’s more alive.”

The Lovebullies perform at Saturday, July 6th. They will also be offering a songwriting workshop Sunday, July 7th.

Not your typical burger

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com “Aside from a delicious late night snack or a D.I.Y. Solution to a bad situation, Hamburgers on Wonderbread is a versatile rock band playing all the music you know and love,” proclaims the intriguingly-named band’s promo material.

Mathew Shelson initially objected to the name but was overruled. He thought Hamburgers on Wonderbread was too ridiculous to work, but after he resigned himself to the name he began to like it.

Maybe even relish it. The potential for silliness was just too high.

“If we’re big enough for Wonderbread to notice us, I’ll be pretty happy at that point in time,” he said.

The four band members are originally from Ontario and have now settled one after another in Invermere and Brisco.

Jesse Couvillon hadn’t known the others – although Mr. Shelson said “he also played in the same band circuit and I knew his band” back in Ontario.

It wasn’t until Mr. Couvillon posted on a local Facebook group asking to join

a band that he met his neighbours from Ontario and the Valley.

“He was looking for a group to play guitar in, and I already played guitar,” Mr. Shelson said. “He worked out really good but we didn’t have a drummer, so I just said: ‘Alright, I’ll play drums’.”

Since its inception last year, the group has played a handful of gigs, but their summer is starting to book up. They will be performing at Steamboat Mountain Music Festival after having been recruited while playing another show.

Mr. Shelson is excited for Hamburgers on Wonderbread to perform at the festival.

“There’s so many good acts there and so many talented musicians and for us to even be a small part of it at the beginning of the show is a really, really cool opportunity for us,” he said.

The band plays cover songs from ‘60s to the 2000s.

“Everyone enjoys it so far. We get people dancing. We have a few sing alongs so I haven’t seen anyone walk out on us,” he said with a laugh. “Their response has always been a positive response.”
