‘I don’t believe this is the best we can do,’ council told Procedure stalls call for ‘emergency’ declaration, but Mayor promises city is working to cut emissions

Abbotsford council has declined to declare a climate emergency and prompted staff to find more ways to speed up work to reduce the city’s carbon footprint. And while Mayor Henry Braun promised the city would continue working to reduce its climate emissions, activists who came to council Monday to convince officials that the matter was urgent left disappointed. Eric Chong, of the local branch of the Extinction Rebellion climate change activist group, presented a slideshow detailing how a consensus of scientists have come to the conclusion that human-caused climate change is accelerating and that immediate action to limit greenhouse gas emissions is needed. Chong – who was accompanied by about a dozen or so other men, women and children – pointed to the city’s recent emissions report and told council: “I don’t believe this is the best we can do and I know for a fact more is required … Abbotsford can take a real leadership position and become a role model to tackle the climate emergency.” Following the presentation, Braun told Chong that the city is doing a number of things to reduce its emissions, pointing to its recent sustainability report and master plans that aim to increase efficiencies and respond to climate change. “Nobody has to convince me that there’s climate change,” he said. “I’ve lived here for 65 years and I know the climate is different than when I grew up.” “This is something that, for sure, we need to pay attention to, and are.” But Braun also noted that work takes money. After Chong said that there were greater costs of not taking significant action, Braun suggested the possible need for a broader community discussion on the topic. “Maybe we need a public discourse to see how much the people are willing to pay in increased property taxes to move it up.” The city has a plan to replace its lights with more efficient LED bulbs over four years, and Braun said maybe it could be done in two. Braun said staff had heard the presentation and that it spotlighted an important issue that

This is something that, for sure, we need to pay attention to, and are. Mayor Henry Braun the city would continue to address. But he said council was likely to stick with the general practice of passing a motion to “receive” a delegation, but not taking immediate action. Coun. Dave Loewen said he agreed climate change was an important topic and that the city needed to do more, but pushed back against those emphasizing the danger of the situation. “I’m not a big fan of saying we declare an emergency and hocus-pocus. I don’t buy into that,” he said. “We do need to take action … I think there’s much more value in action than in just stating there’s an emergency.”
Coun. Patricia Ross, though, said the city could take the moment to look at how it can increase its efforts on the file. Ross, who noted that she had voted to declare a climate emergency at the Lower Mainland Local Government Association, said council should do more than just receive the declaration. Ross moved an amendment to ask staff to create a report on how the city could increase its efforts to reduce its emissions and develop new ideas. However, no other councillors seconded the motion, and council proceeded to simply receive the delegation. “I can assure you that our staff are working in six or seven different areas,” Braun told Chong following the vote. “Climate action is a federal and provincial priority, and local governments are key partners in helping to reduce greenhouse gases and Abbotsford is going to do its share. “But it’s not just the city, we as individuals and residents also have an obligation … There are a whole host of things we can do in our own homes and own businesses.”
A man who was charged with the robbery of an Abbotsford pizza restaurant has now been charged with two previous incidents at the same business. Police announced on June 12 that Kolton Klassen, 27, had been charged with one count of robbery from June 9. On that day at about 8 p.m., police said a man entered D-Hut Pizza on Clearbrook Road, produced a knife, demanded and obtained cash, and fled on foot. A patrol officer who was in the area at the time was flagged down by an employee. A description of the suspect was then broadcast to other officers and, within a minute, the man was located a block away and arrested. After Kolton was charged, police said he was being investigated for two previous robberies – one on May 29 and the other on June 8 – at the same restaurant. Those two incidents also involved a man with a knife. According to the provincial court database, Kolton was charged on June 18 in relation to the other two robberies. He has now been charged with one count of robbery from May 29, and one count of robbery and one count of disguising his face for the incident on June 8. Kolton also faces an additional charge – disguising his face – from June 9, for a total of five charges among the three incidents. According to the provincial court database, Klassen is also before the courts for two charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking (PPT) in Abbotsford in September 2017. He has been ordered to stand trial, but a date for that has not yet been set. Klassen also a 2011 conviction for PPT, for which he received a 12-month conditional sentence.

The addition would cost the average homeowner between 45 and 80 cents of taxes every year. The bus has been enough of a success that current funding for the service is actually more than it needs. Extending the Fraser Valley Express to the Skytrain jumped another hurdle as Abbotsford council gave the thumbs up to the plan earlier this month. The regional bus currently runs from Chilliwack, through Abbotsford, to the Carvolth bus exchange in Langley. But BC Transit has suggested extending the route to the Lougheed Skytrain station by the start of 2021. Doing so, they say, would make it dramatically easier to get into Vancouver. The move would make the journey simpler and cheaper for travellers and commuters. It would also solve the problem of the Carvolth exchange not having a place or way to buy tickets on site. “In discussion with riders, the highest single request was … a direct connection to Skytrain,” Mike Kelly, the city’s senior transportation planner, told council. Birth siblings connect 73 years later

A Williams Lake man who found his birth sister from Abbotsford after 73 years said the experience has been nothing but positive. “It’s been really great and so awesome for this to happen,” Clayton Myers said as he sat beside his sister Donna Smith and held her hand. Donna recently made her first trip to Williams Lake, travelling with her daughter and son-in-law. The two siblings said they first met through letters, then a conference call at the prompting of an adoption agency in Saskatchewan. After that, Clayton and his wife Karen travelled to Abbotsford to meet Donna and her husband at their home. To this day, Karen still thinks it was amazing how welcoming Donna was right away. “She didn’t know anything about us and yet she invited us into her home,” Karen said. Donna said she believes God brought them together. “We’ve been able to have a few visits in person and we talk on the phone and text,” she said. “We’ve learned so much about our family.” It was curiosity about their medical histories that first inspired Clayton and Donna to inquire about their backgrounds. “Being adopted you don’t know what kind of health problems you may have in the future,” Clayton said. Initially he received a 45-page package from the adoption agency, but said there was no medical information included. Around the same time, Donna was also making inquiries because her children wanted to know about her medical background. Clayton was born in Regina in 1934 and Donna was born in Saskatoon in 1936. They shared the same birth mother and father. Once Clayton and
Donna were put in touch with their birth family, they discovered their parents were married in 1937 and went on to have five more children — two boys and three girls. Their birth mother died at age 93 in 2007 and their birth father died on their 50th wedding anniversary. Growing up, the five other siblings knew nothing about Clayton and Donna and were totally shocked to learn about them, Donna said. “I think there was skepticism about whether we belonged in the family or not, but you cannot blame them after all these years,” Clayton said. “I think after they saw how much Donna was like their mother. It put the icing on the cake.” Clayton first learned he was adopted from his older sister when he was about 15 or 16 years old. “My sister was living

Then she tried to deny it, but I said, ‘No, you’ve told me and it’s got to be true.’ It was OK. I accepted it, but it was a shock.” When he talked to his adoptive parents about it, he never learned why they had kept it a secret. “I think it’s the way those things went in the early years. I knew another boy at school
who was adopted and some of the kids found out and they made his life pretty terrible. They teased him. It was pretty tough for him.” Donna was five years old when a neighbour girl got angry at her and told her she was adopted. “I’d never heard the term before so I went home crying to mom so she sat me down and told me babies came from two different ways,” she said. “ ‘God gives them to mommies and daddies or you write
a letter,’ she said. ‘We got you as a letter baby so we chose you.’ So I said to my brother, ‘They had to take you, but they chose me.’” Her adoptive mother told her her background, but Donna said at the time she wasn’t interested. “I told them, ‘I love you. You’re my mom and dad and I don’t care about anything else.’ I was young, I wasn’t thinking ahead.” Donna was born at the Salvation Army’s home for unwed mothers in Saskatoon. “When I was two weeks old, I came up on the train to my parents with a welfare worker to Melfort, Sask.,” Donna said. Her adoptive mom had been in a car accident and was told she would never have children so they put in for adoption. “Eighteen months
after I was adopted she had my brother and then 14 and 17 years later had two more girls after I was 16. I was so excited. Mom cried because she thought I’d be so embarrassed.” Donna said the beauty of her life is that with her adoption she was never treated any differently than her siblings growing up. “They were blonde and blue-eyed so I said I was the black sheep of the family. But my dad had dark hair and, when they wrote to the
welfare department for adoption, a letter came back with four babies described. Dad chose the baby with dark hair and blue eyes. By the time I got to them two weeks later, my eyes had turned brown, but they kept me anyway.” Clayton’s older sister was adopted as well, but she was quite a bit older than him so he did not have a lot of time with her, he said. Donna has four children, 21 grandchildren and an 18th great-grandchild due in August.
Her husband died last year after they had been married for 63 years. Clay has three children and three grandchildren. “Being apart the way we are, with our age and our health, it’s difficult and I would just love Clay to meet all of my family,” Donna said. Smiling, Karen said she had enjoyed watching the two siblings making oatmeal together in the kitchen. “It has just been such a miracle that they even met,” she said.

No excuse for distracted driving A lot of rumours are floating around about distractions while driving. Some people believe you can’t drink a coffee or sip on a bottle of water while heading to work. They think huge fines will result. The only way huge fines will result from drinking coffee or water on the go is if you actually get in an accident and are at fault. Drinking these types of fluids minimally interferes with your visual awareness or cognitive processes while driving. Listening to a radio or CD distracts a bit but is allowed. The Motor Vehicle Act (MVA) makes the point that visual awareness is the key to safe driving. In fact, research indicates that those who use hand-held smartphones to look up things or talk to friends or text while driving lose visual awareness by about 25 per cent or more. If any danger or obstacle enters the driver’s space during the use of electronic devices this way, serious accidents causing bodily injury or death to you or others could result. If you want to use any electronic device during
your driving period, you need to pull off into what the MVA calls a safe parking spot. Until then, you need to keep your smartphone in a purse or in the glove compartment. It can ride around loose in the vehicle, but it must be turned off completely. You cannot be fined for having one — only if you use it. The only time you may use a hand-held communication device while driving is if an emergency occurs. That said, hands-free communication is allowed. Using a telephone, for example, is okay if it is voice-activated or only requires one touch to initiate, accept, or end a call. If the device has an earpiece, it can only be used in one ear and must be inserted before driving. Normally, the electronic device has to be fixed to the vehicle or worn securely on a person’s body, and it cannot obstruct the driver’s view of the front or sides of the vehicle. Abbotsford Community Services earlier this month that it has had a name change and will now be known as Archway Community Services. Executive director Rod Santiago said it took “a lot of brainstorming and research” to come up with a name that covered the agency’s many programs. “In the end, we were drawn to the meaning behind Archway,” he said. Santiago said Archway was chosen because it reflects “people helping people” in a collective effort to support the community. He said an “arch” draws its strength from the individual pieces supporting each other, which is a metaphor for how Archway works with the community to support to those in need. The “way” part of the name speaks to how the agency helps people looking to discover their direction and provide a positive path forward. “This change will be more inclusive for the clients we serve beyond Abbotsford and reduce confusion, as people sometimes assume that Abbotsford Community Services is an arm of the government or City of Abbotsford,” Santiago said. While the majority of the non-profit’s 90-plus programs are in Abbotsford, they also serve clients in Mission, Chilliwack, Langley and Chandigarh, India. Archway has over 400 staff and 1,000 volunteers who provide services to children, parents, seniors, newcomers and those with diverse abilities, addictions or mental health challenges. Programs are funded through government contracts, fees for services, grants and donations. The Abbotsford Community Services Food Bank will also update its name to the Archway Food Bank and continue to provide food and basic necessities

Since 1995, they have been known as Abbotsford Community Services (ACS) after the districts of Abbotsford and Matsqui united under the City of Abbotsford. “We had three name changes in my 31 years at the agency and it makes sense to move from a location-based name to a concept name,” said Walter Paetkau, founder of the agency and author of a book on the last 50 years of its history. “When I heard the name for the first time, I was immediately taken with the meaning behind it. After 50 years, the agency is going to continue to evolve and this takes us to the next step.” The previous website AbbotsfordCommunityServices.com will continue to be operational for a short time before all traffic is redirected to the new website at Archway.ca.

Changes coming June 30 to bus services in Abbotsford Several existing routes being realigned , one discontinued
BC Transit, the City of Abbotsford and the District of Mission are notifying customers in the Central Valley Transit System of service changes effective June 30. They say the changes will help address core transit issues in Abbotsford, including matching routing and service levels to ridership and improving scheduling reliability. BC Transit says that travel times for buses in Abbotsford have increased significantly over the past 10 years due to an increase in population, passengers, congestion and rail traffic. The number of passengers on Abbotsford’s roads has increased by 23 per cent since 2008, growing to 2.37 million rides per year, the agency states.
The 2 Bluejay-Huntingdon route in Abbotsford is among the routes being realigned as part of several changes coming June 30 to the Central Valley Transit System. TYLER OLSEN/ABBOTSFORD NEWS BC Transit says the service changes were made based on public feedback in December 2018, Abbotsford’s 2016 Official Community Plan and the 2018 Abbotsford Transportation and Transit Master Plan.
Service expansion is expected to take place in 2020 and 2021 after the new transit and operations facility on Gladys Avenue is complete. BC Transit says the changes for June 30 include:
• realigning existing routes 1 Blueridge-McKee, 2 Bluejay-Huntingdon, and 3 Clearbrook-UFV into the new routes 1 Highstreet-UFV, 2 Highstreet-McMillan, 3 Clearbrook-Huntingdon, and 9 Downtown-McKee • improving schedule reliability by reallocating resources from lower performing routes, including discontinuing the route 23 West Townline • maintaining a higher level of service in the core areas of the city. • establishing the foundation for a future rapid transit route between the University of the Fraser Valley and Highstreet Shopping Centre Visit bctransit.com/cfv/service-changes for more information.

A salute to the Agriculture & Dairy industry FAST FACTS The following statistics from the 2011 Census of Agriculture highlight agriculture in Abbotsford: • Total gross farm receipts in 2010 amounted to over $635,000,000. • 1,282 farms were reported to be in operation in 2011. • Over 7,000 people were reported to be employed on farms in 2011. • Just over half of all farms in Abbotsford are between 10 and 69 acres in size, while 35% are less than 10 acres. Only 1% of farms are over 400 acres in size. • The top three crops grown in Abbotsford by total acreage are hay and other fodder crops (34%), fruits, berries and nuts (30%), and corn (18%). • Over 2,500 ha (6,410 ac) are dedicated to blueberry production. Another 1,312 ha (3,242 ac) are used in the cultivation of raspberries. • 65% of agricultural land in production is farmer-owned. • Over 9 million poultry birds were raised in 2010 (includes those raised for both eggs and meat).

How old were you when you knew you wanted to be a dairy farmer? Right from a young age I knew I wanted to farm. What do you love most about being a dairy farmer? Why? There is not one thing in particular I love about dairy farming. It is the whole package of watching your animals grow and milk well, and watching your crops grow. What is the best piece of advice that you have received from a fellow dairy farmer? The best advice I have gotten is to slow down and smell the roses. There is more to life than just working. What is the biggest challenge in dairy farming today? A lot of farmers would say the weather is a big challenge. What’s one thing you wish you could tell consumers about dairy farming?

WestGen continues to be an artificial insemination leader WestGen, originally known as the Lower Fraser Valley Artificial Insemination Association, was established in September of 1944. At first, the newly formed association operated out of a facility in Surrey, before moving to the previous Milner, location in 1949. In the same year, the organization changed its name to the B.C. Artificial Insemination Centre, a name which it held for the next 49 years. The BCAI Centre’s clientele and scope of activities grew following mergers with the Okanagan AI Centre in 1958, and with the Chilliwack AI Centre in 1986. In January 1997, the BCAI Centre, along with three organizations in Ontario and Quebec (Gencor, Eastern Breeders and CIAQ), formed a limited partnership known as the Semex Alliance, joining producer-controlled Canadian AI centres from coast to coast, and creating one of the largest genetics company in the world. In August 1997, the BCAI Centre expanded its territory eastward, and began offering semen and other AI services to dairy and beef producers in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. To more appropriately reflect the company’s activities and membership across the four Western provinces, a new corporate name of WestGen was adopted on June 1, 1998, cementing them as Western Canada’s Genetics Company.
WestGen and the other two partners of the Semex Alliance sample over 300 dairy bulls globally, per year, and offer a complete line up of dairy and beef genetics. The Semex Alliance group of studs
have produced more millionaire sires than any other AI organization in the world. In July 2016, after 67 years at the Milner location, WestGen relocated to Abbotsford to be nearer to the heart of the
British Columbia cattle industry after building a new home for the future. Phase 2 of the project includes a new barn and lab, which houses Boviteq West. The new barn opened on Oct.30, 2017.

Artists kept anonymous until work is purchased Fifth annual Anonymous Art Show June 29 The Abbotsford Arts Council hosts its fifth annual Anonymous Art Show Fundraiser, starting June 29. The show runs until July 30 at Kariton Art Gallery (2387 Ware St.), with an opening reception on Saturday, June 29 from 6 to 8 p.m. The Anonymous Art Show features artwork of many diverse styles, subject matters, and media from Lower Mainland artists of all ages and skill levels.
Each piece in the show is on an unframed canvas of the same size (12” x 12” x 1.5”), and the artists remain anonymous until after their pieces are purchased. Each piece is priced at $100, with half of the proceeds going directly to the artist and half to the Abbotsford Arts Council in support of free community events, exhibition space, arts initiatives and more.
Purchased pieces are immediately taken off the wall and given to the buyer. In its place, a sold tag will reveal the artist’s name and the title of their work. The Mill Lake Music Concert Series continues over the next three weeks with The MoonLiters on June 29, Valleyfyre Band on July 6 and Kellen Saip on July 13. Seamus Heffernan releases book Ten Grand
Just over a year since his debut novel was released to critical acclaim, crime author Seamus Heffernan’s second novel, Ten Grand, will be officially launched on Thursday, June 27 in Abbotsford. The launch party and question-and-answer session runs from 6 to 8 p.m. at Kariton Art Gallery, 2387 Ware St. Ten Grand sees the return of Thaddeus Grayle, an American private eye working in London, England. The book picks up about a year from the events of Napalm Hearts, where Grayle is happily making a living with the far less dangerous work of insurance investigations and background checks. However, a baffling new case with a potentially huge payday will tempt him out of his quiet – and safe – new life. Ten Grand sees Grayle

investigate the disappearance of a wealthy London banker whose sudden departure has left his family devastated and the police stymied. But it’s a much different story. It’s a bit more contemplative, and digs deeper into Thaddeus’s unhappiness and alienation as the mystery unfolds.” Heffernan said the stress

Prior to his writing career, Heffernan worked in education, journalism, marketing and politics. He currently works for a Member of Parliament. Born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, he has called several places home, including a lengthy stint in London, England. He currently splits his time between Abbotsford, Mission and Vancouver.

New attractions at this year’s Agrifair include pirate show Tractor/truck pull competition returns
Plans have been announced for this year’s Abbotsford Agrifair, running Aug. 2 to 4 at Exhibition Park. This year’s theme is “Where Memories are Made.” Already scheduled new events include Pirates of the Fraser, which tells a tale of battles, trickery, thievery and deception as the Royal Navy defends its fleet – in particular, The Maid of the Moors, its finest ship. A test of skills will do the job to see who sails away with the ship – but maybe Crackers the Parrot has other ideas. Also at this year’s event, raffle tickets will be sold to be part of the Crushin’-It event. Buyers can win a chance to sit in a tank as it crushes a car. Proceeds from the raffle will be shared with Cops for Cancer, Canuck Place Abbotsford, CMEC and Agrifair. Back after a 15-year absence is the Tractor/Truck Pull Competition and Show, presented by Campbell Motorsports of Chilliwack. The competition starts Friday with local stock gas and diesel

The quest to win a game this season continues for the Fraser Valley Bandits, after the Canadian Elite Basketball League lost its ninth straight game on Saturday night. The Bandits grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory against the Edmonton Stingers, falling 104-95 in overtime at the Abbotsford Centre. Fraser Valley remains the only winless
team in the CEBL, and the playoff potential for the team in its first season is fading fast with just 11 games remaining in the schedule. The Bandits led 40-34 at the half, but Edmonton continued chipping away in the second half and eventually sent the game to overtime. The Stingers then took over completely in the extra frame, outscoring the home team 18-9. Edmonton was

Fraser Valley also shot just 35 per cent from the
three point line, while the Stingers made 45 per cent. The Bandits also missed eight free throws, while Edmonton only missed three. The loss drops the Bandits to a perfect record of 0-9, while Edmonton moves to 5-4. The club next travels to Saskatoon to take on the Saskatchewan Rattlers on June 27. After a 6 year battle with cancer Jacob Ruiter passed away peacefully at home on June 23, 2019 to be with the Lord.
touched the lives of many, many people through her job and private life. Anyone that knew her or met her knew how special she was.
He is survived by his loving family; wife Jean of 62 years; sons Ken (Cindy) and Jim (Debbie); daughters Wendy (Peter), Theona (Dale), Jacqueline (Bert) and Irene (Brad); 16 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; numerous brothers, sisters, other family members and dear friends.
Our family is so lucky to have her as our Mom. She is the epitome of a great mother. She always put everyone before herself and was not just a great mother but also our best friend. She always forgave us for things we did wrong and never judged us. Her love was unconditional, genuine and pure. She made a lot of sacrifices for us over the years. Some of which we did not even realize until later in our lives. Our Mom called things the way she saw them. She was not afraid to speak her mind and to let people know when she felt they were doing something wrong. She often stood up for those that needed sticking up for in life. We love and respect and feel so honored to have her as our Mom. We always knew how tough our Mom was but it was truly amazing to be by her side during this last 5 months of battling her cancer. She never gave up and on bad days fought as hard as she could to put a smile on her face for us and to say just the right things to make us feel better.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Mother, Wilma Hunter. Wilma passed away peacefully at the age of 76 on June 7, 2019. Wilma fought a courageous battle against small cell lung cancer. After being given 5 weeks to live, Wilma battled and fought hard to be with her family for 5 months. She loved her family and her children meant everything to her.
PEELING Kevan John March 5, 1946 - June 20, 2019 Kevan passed away peacefully on June 20th after a 7 year battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife Linda, of 23 years, and leaves behind son Chuck (Glenda), grandchildren; Dallas, Blake and Stephanie, sister Jennine (Terry) Saskatoon, stepdaughter Christine (Matt) Scott, granddaughter Claire, and 4 nephews. Kevan is predeceased by his parents Charles and Phyllis, and brother Charles. Born in England, March 5, 1946, Kevan grew up on a farm in Saskatchewan, and moved to Abbotsford in the mid ‘80s. He was a long time member of Ridgedale Rod and Gun Club. At his request there will be no service but there will be a celebration of his life at a later date. More Every Day
Wilma was born in Altena, West Germany and came to Canada in 1971. Wilma spent a big part of her life living in Abbotsford, BC where she worked in the Health Care field. She was a Mental Health Care Worker and worked at several seniors homes and care facilities within Abbotsford. Most of Wilma’s career was spent at Sunrise Special Care Facility. Wilma loved her job and working with her residents. Wilma never looked down on her residents or thought of them as being any different. She always treated them with respect, kindness and dignity that made them feel special, important, cared for and above all loved. Wilma loved her residents so much and it truly showed. Even after retirement, running into the residents on outings to the local malls would result in loud calls of “Hi Mamma Wilma� or “Hi Blondie� when seeing Wilma. Both names residents called her for many, many years. Wilma had a great love and knack for gardening and every year she was proud to sit out on her patio at the entrance to Forest Village Apartments and share her amazing flowers with everyone that came into the complex. Wilma loved her patio, it was a place she loved to be more than anywhere. It was her piece of paradise. She would sit out there and talk with people from the complex, their visitors and anyone that would walk by always got a big wave and “Hello, how are you today?� Endless conversations took place at that patio over the many years Wilma had lived there. A lot of great stories were told there while drinking coffee and a lot of great advice was given there and above all a lot of genuine, kindness, caring and love was shown there. Wilma never judged anyone. It did not matter to her if someone was rich or poor, gay or straight, of any race or any religion. She was the most non judging person we have ever met. Wilma was also the most forgiving person we have ever met. Wilma

To the many friends Wilma has made over the years. Please know that your friendship meant so much to her and that she loved and cherished each and every one of you so very much. Our Mom and all of our family are so grateful for everything each and every one of you has done in extending the time we were able to spend with our Mom.

Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure, you are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure. FILUK Sonia (Sophie) August 10, 1934 – June 20, 2019 Sonia Filuk passed away at Abbotsford General Hospital on Thursday, June 20th surrounded by family. She is reunited with her husband, Alex, and family who have gone before into the eternal rest of heaven. Sonia, (nee Kadun) was born on the family farm and the birth was registered at Minitonas, Manitoba. She was the first daughter born to Jacob and Nadia Kadun and raised during the Depression and the war years on a prairie farm. As the daughter of Ukrainian immigrants, she was expected to help on the farm and learn the skills of running a household. Her schooling was in the typical one room school house common on the prairies and she went on to attend high school in Minitonas. Though the winters were long and cold and there was always work to be done, mom talked about the fun social times, school, friendships and visits with family and friends. A special opportunity was attending St. Andrew’s Ukrainian College in Winnipeg for a summer during high school. Alex and Sonia were married in November 1950, in Swan River, Manitoba where they lived until moving to British Columbia. Alex and Sonia moved to the Fraser Valley in 1973. Sonia attended and volunteered at the Seven Oaks Alliance Church; taught ESL classes; and attended Christian Women’s functions. Dad and Mom moved into the Garden Park Towers in their retirement years where they enjoyed meeting new friends. Mom volunteered at “Helping Hands.� Sonia was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Alexander Filuk, in March 2018. She was also predeceased by her parents, her brothers Alex and Wes, and members of a large extended family. She is survived by her daughters, Elaine McVie, Pattie (Ulli) Onsorge, Grace (Bob) Dyck and Debbie (John) Aarts; her grandchildren, their spouses, and her great-grandchildren. Mom remembered birthdays and enjoyed attending the great-grandchildren’s activities. She appreciated the phone calls and visits from her grandchildren; Andrew (Courtney) McVie, Alison (Brad) Hummel, Dustin Hicks (Jean Mccallister), Charlie Hicks (Nick) James, Jordan (Angela) Dyck, Josh (Nikki) Dyck, Amanda (Travis) Dyck, Jacqueline (Richard) Boer, Jonathan (Mandy) Aarts, Jesse Aarts, Jacob (Nina) Aarts. Mom enjoyed getting to know and being part of the lives of her eighteen greatgrandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Marie Filuk, and many sisters-in law, brothers-inlaw, nieces and nephews with whom she stayed in touch. The family would like to thank the staff at the Abbotsford General Hospital, Dr. Newton, and the residents of Garden Park Towers who supported mom in her final days. The funeral will take place on Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at 1:00 PM at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford.
