The CWA trishaw, equipped with a ‘pedal-assist’ electric motor, provides a comfortable seat for one or two passengers at the front of the bike, piloted by a rider on the seat behind.

Jane Hu, Canadian head of the CWA, was in town last week to demonstrate the bikes and take a few folks for rides.

Rossland Mayor Kathy Moore, Trail Mayor Lisa Pasin, city councillors, media and other interested parties were invited to see just how valuable this program would be.

Rides were offered free of charge to those with mobility issues, beginning with residents at Columbia View Lodge.

VICTORIA - Any British Columbia resident who has ever complained about losing a precious hour of sleep thanks to daylight saving time now has a chance to gripe to the provincial government.

The province is asking people to share their views on how time should be observed in B.C. through an online survey and written submissions.

Premier John Horgan says as Washington, Oregon and California move toward permanent daylight saving time, it’s a good

time to think about what will work best for B.C. Most areas of B.C. “spring forward” into daylight time during summer months and “fall back” to standard time in the winter.

Saskatchewan does not observe daylight saving time and remains on standard time yearround.

The online survey will be available until July 19 and the website has information on the history of time observance in B.C. and the impact of various options, such as changes to the timings of sunrise and sunset.

“I know many people will have strong preferences on this complex question, and this is an opportunity to express them and help government decide our next steps,” Horgan said in a news release. “As we monitor what’s happening in other jurisdictions, I look forward to input from British Columbians on how to set our clocks throughout the year.”

Organizations and individuals are also invited to provide written submissions about time observance, which affects many key B.C. industries including agriculture and transportation.

Christina Lake served and won match point last week in the community’s bid to officially win the title of “Pickleball Capital of Canada.”

The designation, which has been in the works for nearly two years, means that the community can market itself as a destination for athletes young and old, seeking the asphalt courts to play their sport.

“I am quite please that, not only does this project promote recreation and the health and wellness of Christina Lake residents,” said Grace McGregor, Christina Lake’s elected member of the regional district, in a press release, “it will also benefit visitors who come to play and will be a great spin-off economically for local businesses.”

NELSON – A southeastern British Columbia watershed including a rare inland temperate rainforest has been purchased by the Nature Conservancy of Canada, protecting it from development.

The national land trust says the purchase and protection of the 79-square-kilometre Next Creek watershed was one of its highest conservation priorities in B.C. The watershed, along the west side of Kootenay Lake between Nelson and Creston, is located in the centre of the more than 600-square-kilometre Darkwoods Conservation Area.

unsustainable industrial or recreational activity.

The conservancy says acquisition of Next Creek effectively completes the Darkwoods Conservation Area and a network of protected lands covering most of the mountainous region bounded by the lake and highways 3 and 6 between Nelson, Salmo and Creston.

Close to $20 million was needed to purchase the land and provide for

the long-term management of Darkwoods, with funds coming from private donors, governments and several businesses and foundations.

Darkwoods offers essential habitat for almost 40 confirmed species at risk, including grizzly bear, wolverine, peregrine falcon and mountain caribou, as well as an inland temperate rainforest which is rare because it receives most of its moisture

from snow.

Nancy Newhouse, with the Nature Conservancy, says the organization is grateful to all those who believed in the organization’s plan.

“Conserving the Next Creek watershed and expanding the Darkwoods Conservation Area presented an incredible opportunity to fulfil a conservation vision that started over a decade ago,” Newhouse says in a news release.

George Heyman, B.C.’s minister of environment, says the province is committed to preserving B.C.’s natural legacy as Canada’s most biologically diverse province with the highest percentage of protected areas.

“It is a large part of our identity and we want our kids and grandkids to experience this beautiful, diverse province as we have the fortune to,” Heyman says.

Clearcutting B.C.’s old-growth leaves all of us poorer, forever

E

arlier this month, hundreds of British Columbians visited MLA offices across the province demanding protection of endangered old-growth forests and improved forest management, during a day of action organized by Sierra Club BC. In response, David Elstone, the executive director of the Truck Loggers Association, accused our organization of not acknowledging the economic importance of old-growth logging and claimed that clearcutting what little remains is sustainable.

He was joined by Black Press Media columnist Tom Fletcher repeating outdated claims about the climate benefit of replacing old-growth forests with young trees. Fletcher ignores modern science showing that clearcutting ancient trees results in the rapid loss of huge amounts of carbon accumulated over hundreds of years.

Sierra Club BC is concerned about the economic, social and ecological impact of clearcutting endangered old-growth forests. True sustainability is leaving similar values and conditions for future generations. But B.C.’s ancient giants have been reduced to a fraction of their former extent, replaced by young, uni-

form forests cut in short rotation forestry, never allowed to grow old again.

Elstone claims B.C.’s forest management is the most sustainable in the world. However, satellite images show that on Vancouver Island, we are losing what little forest remains intact three times faster than Brazil’s primary rainforest in the Amazon is being destroyed.

Massive amounts of carbon have been added to the atmosphere as a result and only a tiny fraction remains stored in wood products. One study estimates the loss of carbon when comparing old-growth forest to a 60-year-old stand at more than 300 tonnes of carbon per hectare (more than 1,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide).

The current old-growth logging rate on Vancouver Island alone is about 10,000 hectares a year or more than 30 soccer fields a day. The inescapable conclusion is that old-growth logging there alone contributes millions of tonnes annually to provincial carbon dioxide emissions.

Elstone highlights that in recent years, close to half of the volume cut on Vancouver Island came from old-growth.

Elstone is in denial about old-growth logging coming to an end, one way or the other. This should be a huge concern for everyone with a job in the woods.

Plants and animal species that depend on old-growth will vanish. Climate impacts will worsen without the shield of intact ancient forests to reduce droughts, floods and fires. Degraded landscapes will impact the quality of drinking water and allow fewer options for a diverse economy that includes tourism and recreation.

Elstone claims 55 per cent of remaining old-growth forests on Vancouver Island is protected. This is highly misleading. As the total amount of old-growth trees declines because of logging, of course the percentage that is protected goes up. B.C. could destroy 99 per cent of all old-growth, set aside one per cent, and report 100 per cent is protected. Is this the approach to conservation that British Columbians want?

His sustainability argument is par-

ticularly troubling considering B.C.’s old-growth forests were looked after

by Indigenous peoples for millennia.

Indigenous communities made use of forests in hundreds of different ways without destroying their ecological integrity. Instead, B.C. is exporting about 3 million cubic metres of old-growth per year as raw logs, accepting massive environmental losses for minimal economic benefits.

The good news is it is not too late to save what remains of B.C.’s oldgrowth, restore second-growth forests and transition to truly sustainable forest management. We can still chose to save the web of life that depends on intact forests and move to carefully planned selective logging. This would deliver “negative emissions” and wood products at the same time, capturing more carbon in our forests than is lost as a result of harvesting.

Creating more jobs with less ecosystem damage per cubic metre of wood deserves our full support. The longer we wait, the harder this change will be. The first step is for industry and government to stop the denial reflected in Elstone and Fletcher’s opinion pieces.

He was also very racist -- he punished me for having a black friend in grade school -- and just generally cruel.

Now, his health is not so good, and his old age has mellowed him out considerably. He can still have temper rages if provoked enough, but most of the time he is calm.

The problem is that everyone in my family keeps urging me to spend more time with him “before he’s gone.” Everyone else is content with sweeping the way he treated us under the rug and brushing it off as “that’s just how he is.” Even my mom adores him, despite the things he did to her.

The thing is that I have no desire to see him again. I’ve visited before out of familial obliga-

The therapist referred him to an excellent psychiatrist, who diagnosed him with OCPD. The only way to treat this disorder is with medication. My husband takes an anti-depressant, not for depression but because it’s an off-label treatment.

And it works! It’s not perfect; he still is stubborn and compulsive/rigid sometimes, but it changed the whole dynamic for the better. And he has some insight into his behavior, best of all. Our marriage has been terrific for many years now.

I realize the sister is not motivated, but perhaps all her unpleasant consequences could motivate her to go to a psychiatrist. Hope so! -- Been There, Came Out the Other Side

to remain nearby the mother for some time when she has been killed. Somewhat fortunately for the cubs and for the conservation officers who responded to the incident, the two cubs did just that.

The first cub was easily captured by officers in just a few minutes, however the second took all night to capture. Once they were in the custody of the conservation officers the cubs were transported by volunteers to the Northern Lights Wildlife Sanctuary which is located in Smithers, B.C..

“We are very grateful that the driver knew to call in that there were cubs involved”, said Spizzirri, “and that the conservation areas were actually in the area at the time.”

In the small town of St Mary’s, Ont., the newly renovated Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame welcomed Jason Bay into its eminent fold.

On June 15, hundreds gathered outside its doors early, to get a peak at some of the rich history that it holds commemorating the highlights of players and events that make up Canada’s mark in professional baseball, which now includes the storied career of the Trail native.

“It is humbling and has a greater magnitude being here, it is a great honour,” said Bay. For the Bay family, this was a very proud day as they showed up in full support to watch the Induction. The Bay contingent included his wife, Kristen; children, Addison, Evelyn, and Garrett; parents Kelly and Dave; sister, Lauren and her family; his aunt, cousins, and nephews. They all got a chance to hear a sentimental and humorous speech after fellow inductee and Canadian, former Chicago Cub’s pitcher, Fergie Jenkins, helped him into his jacket.

For Bay, grinding and perseverance was a huge part of his career.

“From Kindergarten to Grade 2, all I wanted to be was a baseball player, except for Grade 2 when I wanted to be a cab driver,” laughed Bay. “My highlight was getting to Major League Baseball. By all accounts I was a statistic that never should have happened.

Looking at pure numbers, the game is about who makes it and who stays. I was a 22nd round pick who was traded a few times in the minors. I was scratching and clawing here and there, so

Bay began his career playing Trail Little League, and kept advancing through Junior League, then Gonzaga, the minors and the majors, adding “I was going to keep playing until they tell me I can’t.”

It was the even keel and motivation that kept Bay going as he remembered draft day in Trail.

“So draft day comes and my modem drive is hooked up and I’m waiting. After 20 rounds, my name hasn’t been called so I decided to go down to the Columbia River and go fishing … thinking about it now I have to wonder about what my parents were thinking when I told w them that I didn’t get drafted and I’m going

His desire to play baseball didn’t wane as he persevered through the minors.

“All I wanted was a shot. If we can do it great, if not at least I had an opportunity.

It wasn’t linear and it took some ups and downs in the minors but every opportunity, I got better.”

It was his positive attitude and success that caught the eye of Tim Leiper, Bay’s first manager in rookie ball, while playing for the Montreal Expos organization.

“I was a magnet below the bottom of the depth chart, and I know Leiper had direct orders from up top to play me the least amount of min-

utes, but every time he put me in I kept hitting and he kept putting me in, which gave me an opportunity a year after that.”

Bay’s success and confidence in Pittsburgh led to his trade to the playoff-bound Boston Red Sox in 2008, and most thought that Bay was there to replace the popular Manny Ramirez.

“I was the one who came in and replaced Manny, but I thought I was coming and playing, and I wasn’t replacing anyone. Boston helped because in Pittsburgh we struggled, but here it was worst to first. Every day was like being in the playoffs. It was the atmosphere every day;

the intensity was the most stressful and fun at the same time.”

Pressure did not seem to faze Bay as he showed great resilience and confidence while playing for his country in the Baseball World Classic in 2006 when the Canadians defeated the United States.

“The first year we didn’t know what to expect and we beat the United States and I remember getting a call from Wayne Gretzky, and I thought that this was pretty cool. It was almost too intense for March. I remember in 2009 in Toronto, when we had 50,000 people at the game, but I was only used to playing in front of 4,000 people.

It was a playoff atmosphere.”

Bay was very grateful for the support that he received from his wife of 20 years. He remembered clearly the night that he was traded from Pittsburgh to the contending Boston Red Sox. “I came home and said, ‘I was traded to Boston and I’m in the line up tomorrow night.’ She said, ‘You go and do what you got to do.’ We had a two year old at the time and she was eight months pregnant.”

He was also quick to acknowledge his parents who, “Never missed a game, never criticized, and never faltered in their belief in me.”

As he acknowledged his family, Bay made a special announcement to his three kids and calmly and emotionally told them “I learn from all of you every day and I know that you wanted to be mentioned by name. Here is what I learned, from Addison tenacity, from Evelyn passion, and from Garrett kindness.”

He quickly added “Let this be a reminder to you, I was once

cool, and did have a job.”

Bay’s success, awards, and accolades in the majors are impressive, yet for the young man from a small smelter town in the Kootenays, character has marked his career from start to finish.

“Strangers shape our path and what we become. I was a grinder who did a few things well but nothing great.

I take a lot of pride in that, as it is inherently Canadian.

“At the end of my career, I hope my roommates say, ‘I was a better person than a player.’ I always tried to be the same guy every day, whether I was 0-for-4 or 4-for-4.”

Trail coach Andy Bilesky (1984) and pitcher Chris Kissock (2012) were also inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.

Joining Bay as 2019 inductees are pitcher and Gibsons, BC native Ryan Dempster, Philadelphia Phillies bench coach Rob Thomson, and former Toronto Blue Jays GM Gord Ash.

LEPINE, Gerald (Jed) LEPINE, Gerald (Jed) passed away peacefully on June 17, 2019 in Trail, BC. Gerry was born and raised in Trail and after finishing high school, got a job at Teck. He worked at Teck for 38 years before retiring. He enjoyed camping and fishing on the Arrow Lakes as well as hunting and curling. He also loved coaching his son for many years in sports.

Gerry was predeceased by his parents Maxime and Kathleen Lepine. He is survived by his loving wife Delaina of 38 years, his children Michelle (Gerry) and Brad and his one and only grandchild Bentley. He will be missed by his sisters Diane (Dan), Bev (Jack) and Wendy (Dave), his brothers Brien (Heather) and Roland (Lucy), many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.

A private family graveside service will be held at Mountain View Cemetery in Rossland. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall in Trail on Friday, July 5, 2019 from 1:00-4:00 pm. Vaping among Canadian teens spikes by 74 per cent in one year, study suggests The Canadian Press

New research suggests vaping among Canadian teens skyrocketed by 74 per cent in a single year, and that new brands of e-cigarettes are gaining a foothold following federal legislation.

University of Waterloo professor David Hammond, who led the study of youth vaping in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K., said the findings reflect the risks of the “newest evolution of vaping.”

The researchers say an online survey found the number of Canadian participants aged 16 to 19 who reported vaping in the previous month rose from 8.4 per cent in 2017 to 14.6 per cent last year.

Rates of weekly use climbed to 9.3 per cent from 5.2 per cent over the same time period.

In May 2018, Ottawa formally legalized vaping, opening the door for international vaping brands - some backed by big tobacco companies - to enter the Canadian market.

Weeks after becoming available in Canada, some of these vaping brands ranked

among the most popular with teens, along with similar high-nicotine products, said Hammond. In the U.S., researchers found parallels between the rise of these brands and a surge in youth vaping, he said.

The study also suggested that youth cigarette smoking increased from 10.7 per cent in 2017 to 15.5 per cent the following year, deviating from decades of research suggesting tobacco use in Canada was on the decline, Hammond said.

Hammond said he hopes the results are just a “blip,” but said it would be worrisome if other studies came to the same conclusion.

The research paper published last week in the British Medical Journal is based on two waves of online surveys conducted in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K. in July and August 2017 and August and September 2018. Data was collected from a sample of 7,891 Canadians recruited through commercial panels.

E-cigarettes can be an effective tool for adult smokers trying to quit, but Hammond said policy-makers need to be proactive in preventing young Canadians from picking up the habit.

“What the government and public-health authorities need to do is find some balance to allow adult smokers to have access to these products, without creating a new generation of nicotine users,” Hammond said. “We haven’t got that balance right yet.”

Poll: Rising gas prices impact summer road trips Black Press

A poll commissioned by Coast Capital Savings found rising fuel costs to have a “real impact on peoples’ financial health and well-being”.

The survey was conducted by the Mustel Group between June 5 to 13 when prices had receded from record highs and were fluctuating between approximately $1.40/$1.50 per litre in the Lower Mainland.

“Many people are reducing their discretionary spending. That can help households stay on track from a budgeting perspective when there is a strain on day-to-day finances, which is certainly the case for a lot of families right now,” said Rachel Coyle, Vice President Retail Oper-

According to Coast Capital, the results reinforce that people are having to make tough decisions about their spending to absorb higher prices at the pump – with direct impacts on their savings and ability to repay debt. In particular:47 per cent of all respondents (and 57 per cent of families) say gas prices are impacting their spending on entertainment and activities such as eating out, shows and events.

51 per cent of all respondents (and 60 per cent of families) say gas prices are impacting their ability to build their savings.

And perhaps most concerning of all, 29 per cent of respondents (and 38 per cent of families) say gas prices are impacting their consumer debt repayments.

Health Canada, said in a statement that the department has taken a number of actions in response to the mounting evidence that youth vaping is on the rise.

Durette said Health Canada is ramping up its efforts to ensure industry compliance with current federal regulations on the sale and promotion of vaping products.

The agency is sending letters to vaping retailers across the country to remind them of their obligations to prevent youth access, and health officials are expected to inspect thousands of convenience and specialty stores by the end of the year, said Durette.

Existing regulations prohibit youth-targeted advertising of vaping products, and

Health Canada is reviewing feedback on proposed new measures to ban these ads in public places, stores and media where young people are likely to encounter them, Durette said.

The department is also examining the role of flavours, nicotine concentration and product design in appealing to youth and non-smokers, she said.

It has also launched a multi-phase campaign to educate teens about the risks associated with vaping at a young age.

But Rob Cunningham, senior policy analyst at the Canadian

Cancer Society, said the research shows that government needs to do more - and fast.

“We have made such incredible progress to reduce youth smoking, and now we have a situation whereby a new generation of teenagers are becoming addicted to vaping products,” he said.

“We cannot stand still and allow that to happen.”

Cunningham said Ottawa needs to tighten up advertising rules for vaping products to make them at least as restrictive as those for cannabis.

He also urged federal lawmakers to

adopt restrictions on the use of flavoured vaping products, and said provinces should ban their sale except in adult-only specialty stores.

Most provinces have legislation on vaping products, and Cunningham said the only two outliers, Alberta and Saskatchewan, must follow suit.

He called on provincial governments to follow many U.S. states in raising the minimum age to purchase tobacco and e-cigarettes to 21. As it stands, anyone 18 and over can purchase vaping or tobacco products in Canada.
