Ponoka celebrates National Indigenous Peoples Day

Ponoka and communities all across Canada celebrated National Indigenous Peoples Day Friday, June 21.

The pow wow planned for Centennial Park was moved to Ponoka Elementary School due to the weather. The event, co-hosted by Wolf Creek Public Schools, Ponoka Parent Link Centre and the Ponoka Jubilee Library, featured

drummers from Maskwacis and dancers from Red Deer, Ponoka, Maskwacis and Edmonton.

The event was also supported by Ponoka ECD Coalition, Canadian Heritage, the Town of Ponoka and Parkland Regional Library.

The Maskwacis Education Schools Commission hosted a school-wide pow wow June 21 to celebrate the end of its inaugural school year at Bear Park in Maskwacis. The event included a competition pow wow, career fair and community giveaway.

Alberta Health Services also held a smudge ceremony and drum circle on June 18 and served bannock on June 20 at the Ponoka Centennial Centre and the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre hosted an Elder talking circle and served fry bread tacos in the cafeteria.

The Government of Canada declared June 21 of each year as National Indigenous Peoples Day in 1996 and is a day to celebrate the heritage, diverse cultures and achievements of First Nations, Inuit and MĂŠtis.

Petty thefts hallmark of summer season Ponoka RCMP briefs

A Ponoka man will be back in court to face 18 charges relating to several rural break and enters last month.

Caleb Shimwell, 20, was arrested June 20 and charged with numerous counts of break, enter and theft over $5,000, possession of stolen property over $5,000, trafficking stolen property and mischief as well as charges for failing to comply with a probation order.

On May 27, a pair of rural properties were broken into. A Yamaha Grizzly 550 quad as well as another Yamaha ATV and a generator were stolen from a Ponoka area property, while a truck and Yamaha 50cc bike along with a welder, tools and other items were taken from a Wetaskiwin area property.

A third shop was broken into on May 29 where a vehicle had been stolen.

Fortunately, as a result of the RCMP investigation, all of the items were recovered and returned to the owners.

Shimwell had made an appearance already and was released from custody. He is scheduled to appear in Ponoka Provincial Court to answer to the charges on July 19.

Briefs Residents are being reminded to ensure their doors, garages and vehicles are all secured following a string of incidents over the weekend.

Officers from the Ponoka RCMP were called to four separate residences on June 22 to follow up on a couple of break-ins plus a theft of a vehicle.

While nothing was reportedly taken after a garage was broken into along 60 Ave., some small items were missing from a vehicle break-in on 63 St. followed by a licence plate being stolen from another vehicle on that same street.

Also that day, police attended a property located on Township Road 431 east of Ponoka to follow up on a report of a stolen truck. The 2011 Dodge Ram with a black flat deck is still missing and RCMP are continuing to investigate.

RCMP also dealt with a motorcycle crash that day, where a motorcyclist failed to negotiate the Hwy. 53 westbound off-ramp from Hwy. 2.

Officers reported the driver was going too fast entering the off-ramp and going off the pavement into a ditch before winding up in a nearby field. After reaching the field, the motorcycle slid causing the driver and his dog to fall off.

Meanwhile, a 19-year-old man is facing a count of mischief after RCMP responded to a call of a disturbance in progress on June 24.

As officers arrived at a home on 48 Ave. in Ponoka, a man was seen throwing a chair out of a front window where a number of other broken items were also laying.

Upon entering the home, officers found a second man laying unconscious and medical assistance was called.

The man, who has not been named pending a court appearance, is now charged with mischief under $5,000.

Traffic safety measures during the 2019 Ponoka Stampede

The Ponoka Stampede is here and that means the Town of Ponoka, along with Alberta Transportation, is once again implementing its annual traffic control plan to help ensure pedestrian and motorist safety.

Traffic safety measures will be in place until July 1.

“With high volumes of Stampede traffic expected once again, the town is committed to helping ensure the safety of our residents and Stampede guests each year with these increased traffic control measures,” said Mayor Rick Bonnett in a release. “We want to do everything possible to support another successful Ponoka Stampede while helping to protect public safety.”

The following measures are being implemented: 1. A reduced traffic speed limit of 30 km/ hr along Hwy. 53, beginning east of Hwy. 2A ending at 46 St. effective from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily and continuing until later in the evening as needed during peak traffic hours to accommodate evening events.

2. A reduced traffic speed limit of 50 km/hr along Hwy. 2A, effective from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily or later as needed to accommodate peak traffic hours, beginning south of 36 Avenue to the intersection of highways 2A and 53.

3. A temporary four-way stop at Hwy. 53

and 50 St., effective 24 hours daily. Advanced signage will notify motorists of the upcoming four-way stop on 50 St. and Hwy 53, east and west of the stop signs. An access road to the Stampede will be open to traffic at that intersection, making it a four-way stop.

4. Access to Hwy. 53 will be closed to traffic at 54 St. 54 St. will remain open to local traffic and users of the Ponoka Arena, however access to Hwy. 53 will be blocked to traffic at the south end of 54 St. 5. RCMP will monitor and help direct pedestrian and vehicle traffic as needed at pedestrian crossings on Hwy. 53 during peak traffic volume periods. Pedestrian crossings along Hwy. 53 will be clearly marked with signage and lighting.

County receives update from energy lobby group

An update on Alberta’s energy sector isn’t a very cheery thing to listen to these days, but Ponoka County council was able to take away a few interesting items from a presentation at their June 18 meeting.

Kelly McTaggart, community engagement advisor for the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP), came by to provide an industry update.

and a need to push Canadian natural gas in order to keep the industry strong,” she added.

“The U.S. is our biggest customer, but also now our biggest competition as they have increased production 35 per cent in the last decade. That is why we need to look elsewhere, such as Asia.”

While an International Energy Agency (IEA) supply forecast shows a 400 per cent increase in renewable energy production by 2040, McTaggart explained the broader story demonstrates alternative energy won’t soon be taking on too much of the actual load.

“While renewables are and will be an important part of the global energy story, it will by no means outpace oil or natural gas. However, the story does show that natural gas will

dramatically increase over that same time frame,” she said.

One other subject that has been in the news and that CAPP is attempting to help with is the growing trend of companies going under and abandoning oil and gas assets.

“The substantial inventory of suspended and orphan wells continues to grow as the downturn rolls on. We are looking at a six per cent increase this year and there is incentive for industry to fix this,” said McTaggart, who added the biggest indicator of a company collapsing is non-payment of property taxes.

“There is a need to have policy and triggers in place to find out why these companies keep going under. Not paying taxes is a signal to us that there are issues, but ideally the issue would somehow be identified earlier so the province and orphan well association can step in.”

She added that CAPP is advocating for the UCP to continue the review on the subject started by the NDP. This particular issue has relevance to Ponoka County as the municipality is among the top 10 in energy activity in Alberta. from a defunct company then cut deals to lower their tax burden only to go belly up within weeks.

“They transferred hundreds of wells then literally pulled the plug. The reality is this system is seriously broken. It’s ridiculous to the point where a northern municipality has a company still in operation, yet refusing to pay its taxes to the tune of about $8 million,” he said.

“This county is energy positive, but we are as apprehensive as anyone else, but my biggest question is what can you share with us to make us more aware of things?”

McTaggart stated that CAPP is working on a couple of things that may help lobby government and that she would see what information can be handed to the county in order to help both parties stay up-to-date.

CAPP, an advocacy and lobby group for oil and gas member companies, represents about 80 per cent of all crude oil and natural gas in Canada.

McTaggart explained not a lot has changed over the last 12 months, as capacity and access to new markets remain the biggest hurdle for both industries while also awaiting policy and other announcements from provincial and federal governments.

Despite the second approval for the Trans Mountain (TMX) expansion just being announced, there is a need for one or both of the other pipeline projects to be approved.

“There are some positives with Enbridge’s Line 3 getting U.S. federal approval, but there are still a number of permits from some states that leaves it still up in the air and Keystone XL faces several challenges with environmental reviews,” she said.

“The TMX approval still has some hurdles ahead, but Canada needs at least two of these pipelines though TMX is the most important as it is the only one that will provide supply to new markets.”

She added that industry is still waiting to see what the new Alberta government will do on rail capacity, as it had previously stated it would kill the deal to lease tanker cars made by the NDP. Natural gas was also a big topic with McTaggart noting it

is in slightly better shape than the oil side.

“There remains pipeline room for gas, especially in B.C. and the investor climate is better because there is a lot of conventional drilling ability still in Alberta. It is somewhat good news,” she said.

“The markets in China and India are key for Canadian natural gas. China alone is looking to import 41 billion cubic metres per day, so there are huge opportunities available.”

However, that’s were the positivity ends as there will soon be some U.S. natural gas pipelines running into Ontario plus new capacity connecting the lucrative U.S. northeast to gas supplies in the U.S. midwest.

Read responsibly Letters are a thing of the past.

A hand-written note, folded inside of an envelope, licked shut with a stamp in the top, right corner, is almost a historical artifact to younger generations.

In stubborn rebellion against the times, I still write letters to family and friends and send them out on the backs of snails.

I do this, in part, because of how excited I was as a kid to receive a letter in the mail; a letter with my name on it, written to me. I couldn’t imagine my sister snatching one of those letters and reading it as if it was hers. Besides the passionate

outrage she would feel from me, it wouldn’t make sense for her to just assume that the content of that letter was directed specifically to her. Theft aside, it’s just not responsible reading.

There is a song I used to sing when I was younger that went like this, “Every promise in the book is mine. Every chapter every verse every line…”

Now, I don’t need to tell you that “the book” this song was talking about is the Bible. And I don’t need to tell you that the tune was especially catchy and that I sang it with vigor. What I need to tell you is that it’s

just not true. While the Bible was written for us, not all of it is written to us. The Bible is profitable and useful for us because it’s God’s word. Some of the Bible, and the promises within it, are made directly to us as Christians. But many of the promises made in the Bible are not made to us. They are still profitable and useful for us, but they are not our promises.

Take for example, Genesis 12:7, “The Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” This is a promise from God. But is it a promise to me? No. It is a promise from God to Abram.

And it’s a promise about a specific land. This promise is profitable for us because God is faithful to give Abram (and his descendants) this land but it is not to me. This is just reading responsibly. Let’s take another promise, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). The promise in the second half of the verse is made to “whoever believes in him.” This is a promise you and I can claim.

One of the consequences of indiscriminate claiming of promises made to other people is that we are going to be

inevitably disappointed. They might not come to pass and we might lose faith in the one who made the promise. But if it wasn’t made to us in the first place we are free from that expectation and disappointment.

When we read promises in the Bible it’s important to ask, at the very least, “Who is it being given to?” “Who is being addressed?” And if it’s to someone else, don’t steal their letter.

Don’t be a promise-plucker.

Reflections of Ponoka

The continuing saga of the house on 53 Ave.

It is so very gratifying when people get in touch with me to thank us for the local stories that we have done over the years for the Reflections and Remember When feature in your Ponoka News. Through these phone calls, emails, and contact with the office there have been those who have so kindly provided me with some more ideas and photos with which I can put together some new tales about the colourful and fabulous history of Ponoka and surrounding districts.

There is absolutely no doubt that each and every house could tell us so many great stories if they could talk.

Back in 2006 I had the privilege of doing a story on a very interesting and historical home at 5109-53 Ave. in Ponoka, and just recently our office received an email from Evelyn (Harris) Rodney and Ron Harris, the family of Irvin Harris, son of James Harris who wanted to pass on some more information on this long-standing and palatial

dwelling and its residents.

James and Annie Harris On April 4, 1892 Miss Annie Morgan was married to James Harris at Newport, Monmouthshire, England, then immediately sailed for the United States, where they settled in Kansas and farmed there for 10 tough years.

During that time they would welcome their children, sons Irl and Irvin and daughters Ruth (Mitchell), Gertrude (Hambly), and Florence (Nickolas).

In 1903 the family moved to Ponoka where they later purchased a railway quarter near the Hazel Hill School west of Ponoka. Together they gathered logs and shiplap for a granary that would later be enlarged to become the home of their entire family, which would also later include a son Ivor and daughter Lorna (Shearlaw).

In those busy years the family pioneered with the Crawfords, the Gees, the Russells, the Morrows, and many others. James Harris would also become the first manager of the farm at the new Provincial Mental Hospital. It

is very interesting to note that James Harris taught himself how to read in his youth during the time he was being raised by his grandmother in Wales, and while working in Kansas on his first trip abroad, he and his friend would baptize themselves in a horse trough after a spiritual renewal.

After six or seven years Mr. and Mrs. Harris longed for more land so they filed on a homestead and purchased a quarter section in the Anthony Hill district, which is still known as “The Home Place.” When James and Annie moved into town their son Irvin farmed the homestead and would eventually purchase it, later selling the property to his son-in-law Gawney Hinkey and daughter Shirley, who farmed and raised their children Mark and Christie in the area over the years. While farming in the area James Harris would serve as a Councillor, organized the UFA at Brook’s School House, taught Sunday School, helped build the Brooksona Hall, and would proudly purchase the first Chevrolet

car in the community in 1917 along with the first powerful I.H.C. Titan tractor and separator in 1920.

Throughout the years the Harris family took a very active interest in the community, taking part in all sorts of sports, church, picnics, parties, dances, and other events. They always looked forward to loading up the old family organ on the sleigh or wagon and visiting the neighbours or local halls, churches, and schools to share many hours of joyful music and singsongs.

The five youngest Harris children would finish public school at Anthony Hill, and several completed high school in Ponoka. In the spring of 1930 James and Annie had a big sale and then moved to Ponoka, where they had purchased the Old Primary Cottage School on 53 Ave., which had been built in 1915 west of the Ponoka United Church across from the white school. James Harris would turn the former school/teacherage into a triplex, creating unique and comfortable upstairs apartments, all with private entrances. Along the way some have told the family that the main initial Ponoka School was located across the street to the south of the white cottage, but that the remaining shed behind the home was originally the school outhouse, with a backdrop for emptying pails for many years until indoor plumbing arrived in town. Mr. and Mrs. Harris lived in the main floor apartment, which became the joyful center of family activities until Ann passed away in 1953 at the age of 85. James Harris sold the house in 1954 and spent his years living with his children until his death in May 1960 at the age of 95 years.

In those early years there would

be many tenants who lived in that big and friendly home on 53 Ave. Granddaughter Evelyn (Harris) Rodney lived with her grandparents for eight years until the school bus finally connected to their farm home, while two other granddaughters Shirley (Harris) Hinkley and Margery (Harris) Fenske, the young daughters of Irvin and Alice Harris of Rimbey stayed there when they were employed in the Ponoka telephone office and bank. Many years later a granddaughter of the Irl Harris family Elsie (Harris) Strause lived in that always busy “House on 53rd” while attending school. There were other couples who started their young lives there and likely have so many wonderful tales to tell, and these included son Ivor and Millie Harris, Leighton and Elsie Hinkley, and later the Joe Ronnie family, and we have only just mentioned a few.

The ongoing generations of the Harris and other town and district families are very proud and grateful for the countless accomplishments of theirs and so many other pioneer families in and around the Ponoka town and district over the past twelve colourful decades. They would love to hear from other families or individuals who may have lived in that popular house on 53 Ave., which was apparently renovated in 2006, or out in the county over the years so that we might be able to tell their stories, and then I’m really looking forward to what great stories our houses might tell over the next hundred years. This amazing summer scene has unfolded for the past 83 years up at the Ponoka Stampede grounds, where thousands of avid fans of all ages have gathered to take in seven thrilling days and nights of rodeo and chuckwagon action and a whole lot more. As is always the case the grandstands and grounds are full, the midway is in full swing, and the infield, racetrack and our entire community will be willing and ready to host another fun-filled family show from June 25 until July 1..

Alberta has a big PR issue with the rest of Canada — this is nothing new. We’re seen as the “dirty oil,” rich-yet-always-complaining, backwards province, the so-called “embarrassing cousin” of Canada. It doesn’t help when Red Deer city Coun. Dianne Wyntjes goes to Twitter to declare, “I’m a Canadian and I’m Albertan and I’m sorry,” apologizing on behalf of the west, in essence validating the perceived slights from Kenney’s recent remarks in PEI. There’s no doubt the Alberta energy industry is under attack, with anti-Alberta and anti-energy bills such the passing of federal Bill C-69, which aims to phase out oil and gas in Canada.

Alberta needs our leader to make some noise federally and make us heard, without further fraying already strained relationships in the east.

The UCP are fighting these attacks, but there isn’t a lot of confidence with how successful they will be. Alberta needs some wins, and soon.

Although some have argued that the incident happened while there was no one speaking, or that no UCP’s actually wore the plugs, NDP MP Thomas Dang stated he was in the middle of making a speech to the house when the ear plugs were handed out and that at least six UCP members put them in their ears.

Kenney’s office responded, not with a denial, but with the explanation that, “This was a harmless and light-hearted attempt to boost government caucus morale after being forced to listen to the NDP’s insults, lies and over-thetop rhetoric for hours on end.”

This was an important bill and the UCP had already limited debate on it three times. The legislature was debating Bill 9, which was passed early June 20.

The bill halts union wage negotiations, which has the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees up in arms, stating that once the bill receives royal assent, they will be filing with the courts.

So the unions are angry, the health care sector is angry, the energy industry is at best uncertain, and a lot of Albertans in general are uneasy or upset. That’s a lot of upset people.

All it takes is something simple Most people can understand that, sometimes, things are going to go off the rails and there is absolutely nothing we can do about it.

In a lot of those cases, the people pick themselves up and dust themselves off before trudging off to the next task without giving a second thought.

However, there are times where circumstances take place that send a person for a loop and they are left wondering what truck is going to hit them next.

Worse yet, if that individual is up against some time constraints or a job that needs done, the stress and anxiety tend to take over and leave that person in a muddle.

It is times like that when I am more than grateful for the helpful nature and hospitality of those living in small prairie towns.

Yes, even in these days, there remain communities that showcase what living in rural outposts used to be like — neighbours helping neighbours and being kind to strangers that were in need of some assistance.

Places like this still put others above themselves — providing a ride to someone in need, working hard to find a solution to someone’s problem even at their own expense, apologizing when what they try doesn’t work, trusting someone with a vehicle and not expecting any compensation or thanks in return.

and send society back into wrapping itself up in its “all for me” mood.

Two recent news items highlight this — the latest Trans-Mountain pipeline approval and a debate in the provincial legislature.

On the pipeline announcement, the divisiveness started even before the official press release was presented, with opponents questioning the legitimacy of consultations and vowing to fight tooth and nail on some alleged moral high ground.

Over at the Alberta legislature, the proclamation following the election that a new era where the government “will raise the bar of civility and decorum” has allegedly been tossed aside faster than most drivers fly on the QEII at the start a long weekend.

In an all-night debate over a bill that is said to defer union contract negotiations, though opponents allege it’s designed to bust up previous contracts to help cut costs, Alberta’s Premier was busy handing out ear plugs to his party’s MLA to help them not listen to the NDP’s comments.

Both of these situations go to show that, while society has progressed in so many different ways, many other sectors and individuals are choosing to remain swimming in the selfish pool instead of crawling out, cleaning off and doing what is in the best interest of all — as shown by most small town residents.

But that is…just an observation.

Ponoka Seasons Retirement Community will host a Stampede Breakfast

Seasons Ponoka Retirement Community is hosting a Stampede pancake breakfast in support of the Ponoka Food Bank.

The breakfast will be held on Thursday, June 27 at Seasons, at 4004 40 St., Ponoka, from 8 to 11 a.m. The cost per person is $4. Half of the proceeds go to Ponoka Food Bank and the other half will offset the costs of hosting the breakfast.

All community members are welcome to attend.

“At Seasons, we believe that taking an active role in our local communities is important because it

is meaningful to our residents and staff members alike who live and work in these small towns,” said Taylor White, communications coordinator.

“The team at Seasons Ponoka decided that they also wanted to make this a charity event to support their local food bank, as we do corporately, at a time during the summer when donations are more urgently needed.”

According to White, the 2018 Daily Bread report has shown that a growing number of seniors, often living in single-person households, are accessing food banks more so now than ever before.

The numbers have increased five per cent over the last ten years and appear to be on the rise.

“This is the first Stampede Pancake Breakfast that Seasons Ponoka has hosted, and the team is looking forward to the event.”

In the past, Seasons donated turkeys, hams, and cash to food banks during the holiday months.

“Upon learning that food bank donations drastically decline over the summer, we shifted our corporate giving efforts to a time when donations are more urgently needed. We also want to use our platform to remind people that food insecurity exists all year-round, with a rising number of seniors among those accessing food banks,” said

The Brick Learning Centre celebrates 2019 graduates

The Brick Learning Centre held its 17th annual graduation recognition at the United Church on June 22. This year’s theme was “Good Old Days.”

The welcome was given by assistant principal Erin Freadrich.

Principal Ian Tisdale spoke about the brick school building and that by September of this year, it will be 90 years old. When it was first constructed, it was ridiculed as being too large, with too many rooms that would never be filled.

Tisdale compared the graduates’ futures to the building, saying there will always be people in their lives that will ridicule their efforts and try to discourage them, but he told them to follow their hearts, adding that some of the students may be the first in their families to graduate high school.

“There’s probably not a lot of schools in Alberta that will be celebrating 90 years,” he said, noting that the building has stood for that long because it has a strong foundation.

The graduates likewise have a foundation that got them to where they are today — kindergarten teachers, parents, family and communities.

Greetings from Wolf Creek School Board were given by trustee Lorrie Jess and assistant superintendent of People Services Corrine Thorsteinson.

“I actually hope these aren’t the only ‘good old days’ of your life,” said Thorsteinson, adding she hoped when the grads were older they could look back on all their life experiences, the good and bad, and take it all as a lesson and part of what makes them who they are.

“Time stamp this day as one of the ‘good old days’ of your life.”

Elder Bert Bull performed an honour song before he and Shelia Potts presented the Indigenous, Inuit and Metis graduates with an eagle feather.

An eagle feather is a sacred and honoured gift to First Nations, as it is believed eagles carry prayers to the Creator. An eagle feather can only be obtained from an elder.

After the feather ceremony, all the learning centre’s 36 graduates walked the stage to receive their diploma to the song “Good Old Days” by Macklemore.

For one student who would have found it difficult to make it to the stage, the presenters came down and gave her the feather and her diploma.

The banquet was held at the Ponoka Legion later that evening.

The toast to the parents was given by Julia Hopkins and Macy Jensen and the toast to the staff was given by Rosyln Gibson and Jordan Crawford.

There was a PowerPoint presentation of the graduates, a hoop dance and a round dance.

There will be free children’s activities including bouncy castles and games from 2 to 5 p.m. in the park, as well as a photo booth run by the Klaglahachie Fine Arts Society.

Mayor Rick Bonnett and some other dignitaries will say a few words at a brief ceremony at 3 p.m. on the main stage in the park.

Immediately following, Tap 9, a local modern day classic rock band, will provide live entertainment, kicking things off on stage at 3:15 p.m.

After all that, grab a hot dog at the free community barbecue, served by Ponoka Parks, Recreation and Culture Committee from 4 to 6 p.m.

To finish off Canada Day with a spark, make sure to take in the fireworks show over the River Valley in the downtown area, sponsored by the town, at 11 p.m.

IGA Canada Day Barbecue The IGA will be holding its 37th annual Canada Day celebration barbecue on July 1 in the IGA parking lot, starting at 11 a.m.

Ponoka Stampede Of course, the Ponoka Stampede rodeo finals and Showdown and the chuckwagon Tommy Dorchester Dash for Cash are all on the last day of the Ponoka Stampede on Monday, July 1.

Three local vets have been selected to receive “golden tickets” (free rodeo tickets) and the Ponoka Legion Branch 66 members will be marching in

at the start of the rodeo finals at 1 p.m.

Gord Bamford and Corb Lund will be singing the national anthems on Canada Day to start off the rodeo performance.

Ponoka Legion Branch 66 The Ponoka Legion has a number of activities throughout Stampede Week, including Canada Day. All events are open to the public.

The Will Braun Band will play on July 1 from 8 p.m. to midnight. The cover charge for Legion members is $2 who show their cards and guests are $5.

Chicks for Charity’s “Champagne High Tea” an elegant success

Chicks for Charity’s ninth annual fundraising event on June 22, “Champagne High Tea” was an elegant success enjoyed by guests in support of women and children that also touched on the serious topic of domestic violence and homicide.

Guests enjoyed flutes of champagne, a live and electronic auction, high tea and raffles.

Tea hats and fascinators (a formal headpiece alternative to a hat) were encouraged.

Since its beginning Chicks for Charity has had the mandate of helping women and children and the charity is a way to hold a classy event to support that cause within the community, says Jane Wierzba, president.

The charity has raised over $200,000 for women and children since it began. Every year, a portion of the proceeds goes to the Central Alberta Women’s

Emergency Shelter (CAWES) and the remainder goes to a different organization.

CAWES offers a safe refuge, counselling and other supports for families experiencing domestic violence, serving central Alberta, including Ponoka.

This year the remaining proceeds will be donated to the Stepping Stones program here in Ponoka.

Stepping Stones is a non-profit program of Central Alberta Youth Unlimited that supports pregnant and parenting youth through a community of peer support, helping to develop essential life and parenting skills and offering one-on-one support to young parents.

In the past, the Chicks have also made donations to the Go Girl program through Big Brothers Big Sisters, KidSport, and made a sizeable donation to the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre for the purchase of a fetal monitor and has purchased

automated external defibrillator’s (AED’s) for local schools and the youth centre and donated to the development of a community playground.

The amount raised this year was not available at press time.

The auctioneer for the event was Jon Radcliffe, an award-winning auctioneer from Torrington, Alberta, and the younger brother of Wierzba.

Chicks for Charity is supported by the Ponoka Stampede Association, which provides the location of the Stagecoach Saloon every year and volunteers.

Guest Speaker Guest speaker Racha El-Dib of Calgary shared the harrowing story of how her sister Nadia was brutally murdered on March 25, 2018 in a case of domestic violence.

El-Dib spoke of how it felt to realize her sister was missing, and then to identify her at the crime scene.

“That day changed our lives forever,” she said.

After the suspect, Nadia’s

ex-boyfriend, was killed in a police shootout as he attempted to flee and led the police on a chase, it left Nadia’s family without answers.

“We realized that was only the beginning of the horror movie we were living.”

El-Dib spoke of the bystander effect, and how everyone can be a part of preventing domestic violence and how it’s important to recognize the signs before it’s too late. In Nadia’s case, her friends supported the abusive ex, misconstruing the

Women are six times more likely to be the victim of a domestic homicide when they decide to leave, says El-Dib, which is why she works now to spread awareness of domestic violence, the red flags and how to support them, and of the resources available to victims of domestic abuse in the hopes that we will become more engaged as a society in preventing domestic violence.

In one out of every five days, a woman is killed by a domestic partner, says El-Dib. Statistics may point to these cases being women living high risk lifestyles or otherwise being in a vulnerable group, but El-Dib says many times in reality, it’s just young girls who go out for a night with friends and never make it home.

The Ponoka Stampede Association (PSA) held its public open house for the Wild West Grandstand and Rooftop on June 22. The event welcomed the public as well as past and present ticket holders.

Miss Ponoka Stampede Naomi Akkermans was present to give a royal welcome, answer questions and give tours. Akkermans says there was a “steady

stream” of visitors throughout the afternoon.

PSA director Terry Jones was at the grill estimated over 500 visitors had come through by 3 p.m.

The Wild West grandstand features 16 private infield suites with covered seating for 20 people, with a private bar, elevator and personalized service.

The rooftop has seating for 150 with a total capacity of 300 and also has multiple food and bar options.

Ponoka clubs off to soccer provincials

Several local teams Storm-ed toward a championship over the weekend.

Ponoka played host to the Central Alberta Soccer Association (CASA) Tier IV provincial qualifier tournament June 21 to 23 and saw the U17 boys and U19 girls earning the chance at the provincial championship.

The U19 girls faced off with Rocky Mountain House in a two-game series with the visiting squad coming out on top, taking the top spot 4-3 on aggregate.

Despite the result, both teams already knew they had a berth into the provincial tournament, as Rocky Mountain House will host provincials July 5 to 7.

Meanwhile, the U17 boys managed to comeback from a one-goal deficit in the second half to beat Wetaskiwin 5-4 in their semi-final match. That got

them a berth in the provincial championship, set for Fort Saskatchewan July 5 to 7, as CASA had been allotted two spots this year.

Whether knowing they were “in” played into the final against Camrose or if the Storm were simply running low on steam, Ponoka walked off with the silver following a 4-2 loss.

Storm clouds The U13 girls weren’t able to win any of their three games at the qualifier, as Camrose dominated the event by shutting out each team they faced in the round robin event. As for the U13 boys, who came into the qualifier ranked second, it was a tough weekend as the club failed to advance after making it to the final.

Meanwhile, both U11 boys squads came away from the district tournament, hosted in Ponoka, with medals.

Coming in ranked third, Team Bendera powered through the competition to capture the gold which in-

cluded edging the other Ponoka squad, second ranked Team Yeo, 5-4 in the semi-final then beating top-ranked Camrose for the title. Bendera’s club, along with Camrose, will represent the district at the rural challenge event next month. Team Yeo did, however, earn themselves a bronze medal.

League success Ponoka has enjoyed some similar success in league play as the season wraps up.

The U19 girls as well as U11 Team Yeo captured their respective league titles while the U17 boys ended up with silver and it was bronze for U11 Team Bendera.

Three other teams, U13 boys and girls plus U11 girls, were slated to play their final games this week. The U13 clubs both played for bronze June 24 at home while the U11 girls went to Stettler June 25 in search of gold. The results of these contests were not available at press time.

Ponoka is hosting the Central Alberta Soccer Association’s (CASA’s) provincial qualifying tournament for U13 to U19 teams, as well as the U11 district tournament.

U17 boys The Ponoka U17 boys soccer team won their semi-final provincial qualifier against Wetaskiwin 5-3 in a hard-fought match June 23.

The two rivals were tied 2-2 early in the second half.

The Ponoka Storm were second in the standings coming into the game, versus Wetaskiwin in fourth place.

Wetaskiwin took the lead 3-2, but the Storm an-

swered back five minutes later, tying up the game, and followed that with a corner kick goal, taking a 4-3 lead.

Ponoka scored again a few minutes later, but a Storm player received a yellow card and Wetaskiwin was awarded a penalty kick, bringing the score to 5-4 for Ponoka.

Both teams, though appearing tired, kept up the pressure and at the buzzer Ponoka was victorious.

CASA has been awarded an additional provincial berth in this division so two teams will proceed to provincials.

The Ponoka U17 boys played Camrose later that day in the provincial qualifying final, losing 2-4.

Both teams will represent the division at provincials in July.

38-3 loss puts Central Alberta into second place in the AFL

The Central Alberta Buccanneers and the Cold Lake Fighter Jets came into their matchup both looking to lock up first place in the Alberta Football League.

The Buccaneers — tied with the Fighter Jets at 3-0 — unfortunately came into this one slightly behind the 8-ball due to the absence of starting pivot Jarrett Burzuk.

His absence was felt in the first, with the Jets scoring early and often against a stunned Bucs’ defence — leading to a 23-3 halftime lead for Cold Lake. Backup pivot Mustapha Yekini was under pressure from the Jets defence.

“We had a young fella’ in there that we have to get under fire,” Coach Gary LaGrange said. “He is not getting it in practice and he isn’t feeling the pressure. He has a good arm, he is an athlete but he is young. He needs to calm down and execute.”

Dlan Neidermier and Tendayi Jozzy would both score for the Cold Lake, with the Bucs’ only managing to capitalize on a single field goal early in the first quarter.

The Bucs’ came into the second half with the lone bright spot being their defence managing to create three Jets turnovers.

The bright spot wouldn’t shine enough in the second

half, with the Jets immediatly running home another touchdown putting the essentially out of reach at 30-3.

The rest of the third quarter would actually be controlled by the Bucs’, but they would be unable to capitalize on their extended possesion time. The score would remain our of reach at 30-3 heading into the final quarter.

“Our defence had to settle down and they did. We had our chances if we would have got our conversions and actually executed some plays,” LaGrange said.

The failure to capitalize late in the third would result in another Fighter Jet touchdown

early in the fourth by reciever Jordan Moss, extending the lead to 38-3 after the two-point conversion.

Neither team would manage to ad to their tallies, resulting in the final dissappointing score for the Bucs’. LaGrange credited the Jets for the win.

“We knew they would have a solid run game and they have one pretty good reciever and they picked on our corner. In the third quarter, they didn’t do much. We just gave them the ball in scoring positions,” he said.

The 3-2 second place box now head out on the road to play the Fort McMurray Monarchs on July 6.
