It might not have lived up to its “huge public protest” billing, but the chaos outside the entrance of the Surrey RCMP detachment building leading up to the force flying the rainbow pride flag on Monday morning featured dueling placards, stern cops and verbal abuse aplenty.

There were about 30 protesters on either side, and 20 Mounties doing crowd control.

An organization vehemently opposed to SOGI 123 in public schools arrived with signs in hand after warning the Surrey RCMP on Friday that it will face a “huge public protest” if it flies a “political” LGBTQ+ rainbow pride flag at its Newton detachment building on Monday morning, which it did. Those in support of the flag raising also came,

with their signs in hand, resulting in shouting matches, name-calling, sloganeering and a hearty rendition of O Canada.

Whistles were blown, attempts to speak were met, literally, with “blah, blah, blah,” and people on both sides shouted out about their respective rights while trying to silence the others.

It was shrill.

Kari Simpson, director of Culture Guard, sent a letter to RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki, Deputy Commissioner Jennifer Strachan and Assistant Commissioner Dwayne McDonald, officer in charge of the Surrey RCMP, urging “immediate reconsideration” of the planned flag-hoisting.

City government has more important issues pressing than building a canal, councillors say

Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum’s idea to build a “wandering canal” in the city holds no water with some council members who say the concept was not discussed with them prior to the mayor floating the idea at a Downtown Business Improvement Association meeting in Whalley last week.

“A canal is not something we have ever discussed in council,” Councillor Brenda Locke said. “It is not something I would support and I don’t know where these empty roads are that we’re going to be running a canal through. There are way more important issues in Surrey to be worrying about than a canal.”

Councillor Linda Annis called it “a little bit shocking, to say the least, particularly when the mayor is saying that

there are unused roads in Surrey.

“I know certainly when I travel to work each day I’m not seeing roads that aren’t filled with traffic so I’m not sure what he’s talking about with that, and I guess I’m also a bit concerned that he would even be contemplating spending money on something like that when we need to be building better roads, more roads and you know, improving our infrastructure and building rec centres, things like that.”

McCallum has not returned requests for comment. This is not the first time he has pondered the creation of a water feature in Surrey. The 10-acre, man-made Surrey Lake at 7453 152nd St., for example, was opened in 2002 when he was mayor and he presided over the ribbon-cutting.

Asked if the canal idea is for utility, recreation, transportation or simply aesthetics, Surrey Councillor Steven Pettigrew replied, “I

have no idea.

“The first I heard about it was on the news. I wasn’t aware of it. He said he’d been working with staff to find a road and staff knew nothing about it, so I have no idea what he’s thinking.

“The mayor has not seen fit to inform council of this decision or pretty much any of his decisions,” Pettigrew

said. “He directs staff as he determines, and I have no information about that at all. This is how business is done at the city – he’ll just do whatever he wants.

Staff follows his instructions.”

Pettigrew said he doesn’t know enough about McCallum’s canal pitch to know where it’s going or what’s planned.

“I know as much as you know, let’s put it that way,” he told Black Press Media. “A question to ask is, is this the best way to use our resources? Every time we assign staff a task, they can only do so many tasks, and there’s certain tasks that should be receiving priorities right now. Every time we assign other tasks, these other tasks get

bumped down. So is this the best use of our resources right now? I don’t think so.

“I think we have other issues in our city that need to be addressed,” Pettigrew said. “We’ve got massive housing problems, we have school crises happening, we have environmental crises happening and our resources need to be better allocated to fix these type of things rather than looking at whether we can put a canal through the city.”

Asked about the canal, Councillor Jack Hundial laughed, and then he laughed some more. “What can we say about it? It was news to me that this would even be considered, first of all,” he said.

“If that’s a serious proposal he should bring it out to the public, the rationale as to why Surrey now requires a canal.”

“There isn’t that bilateral communication

going on,” he said of council.

Councillor Laurie Guerra said McCallum mentioned the canal in response to a question the BIA moderator had for panelists on what kind of innovations they had in mind for Surrey.

“I just found out about it at the same time everybody else did,” she said. “He probably could have said, if he wasn’t already doing it, I’d love to see the SkyTrain go in to Langley, he could have done a lot of things like that, that have already been addressed by the mayor and I think he said just what he thought. I never heard of it before. I think it’s got its merit – the city staff will have to look into it and see if it’s feasible or even possible.”

Black Press Media has learned the City of Surrey spent $15,851.64 on a Surrey Police Department vehicle prototype, showcased outside Mayor Doug McCallum’s State of the City Address on May 7.

The cost for the “temporary decals” are broken down as follows: $5,775 for graphic design services; $4,700.64 for production and application of decals, and $5,376 for a three-month lease.

According to city staff, the vehicle “has not been fitted out as a police vehicle” but instead “had tem-

porary decals applied to be used during the City’s consultation events to gather feedback from the public on the proposed branding for the proposed Surrey Police Department.”

McCallum said the city has a budget that goes “towards the transition,” and the cost of the temporary decals is part of the budget. He added that it was “a pretty reasonable amount.”

However, lone Surrey First Councillor Linda Annis said spending “that kind of money as a marketing tool is, in my

opinion, is not good use of taxpayers money.”

Annis said there was also a separate cost for other marketing materials.

“I think it’s far too soon to be producing marketing materials like that,” she said. “The report has not yet been approved from Victoria. It’s not a done deal. We shouldn’t be investing money on the Surrey police force to market it until such time that the provincial government either gives us a yes or a no.”

states the force would “go live” on April 1, 2021 and its operating costs will be $192.5 million that year.

That’s a 10.9 per cent increase from the $173.6 million the city projects the RCMP would cost that year.

There are also an estimated $39.2 million in start-up costs. Today, Surrey RCMP has 843 members. The proposed force would have 805 officers, but would be deployed to achieve a 16 per cent increase in frontline patrol officers. It would also have 20 unarmed “Community Safety Personnel.”

Surrey RCMP shut down a Cloverdale neighbourhood on Monday morning (June 24), while investigating reports of shots fired.

Surrey RCMP Cpl. El Sturko said that although the investigation is ongoing, early indications suggest that the sounds in question were generated by fireworks, not gunfire.

RCMP were called

to a residence in the 19400-block of 71A Avenue at about 9:10 a.m. They took two individuals into custody and officers attempted to speak to the remaining occupants of the house.

A perimeter was set up around the house, and the surrounding neighbourhood was evacuated. Traffic was diverted and 195

Street closed in both directions.

The individuals who were taken into custody have now been released.

Simpson claims raising this flag runs contrary to the RCMP’s Code of Conduct prescribing that its members act with “impartiality.”

Sergeant Chad Greig, of the Surrey RCMP, said that “as Canada’s national police service, it is important that the RCMP lead by example in promoting diversity and inclusion. The pride flag represents equality and inclusion and displaying of the flag is a reflection, acknowledgment and support for a community within a larger community.”

Greig said that during June the RCMP “celebrates pride Month and shows support for LGBTQ+ rights, culture and communities.

“All RCMP employees are encouraged to participate in local events, parades, festivals and other commemorative activities being held to mark the occasion,” he said. “We are aware of a group’s intent to protest the Surrey RCMP’s pride event in Monday and respect their right to a lawful democratic protest.”

The flag will fly for one week.

or Jewish. . . if we’re going to fly one flag, we’re going to fly everybody’s flag, or we’re going to fly the Canadian flag only, which represents everybody.”

After the flag raising, Simpson handed McDonald a written request, “RE: Application to fly the Canadian Judeo-Christian flag during the month of October, or part thereof, to celebrate the National Day of Blessing of the Judeo-Christian community in Canada.”

Rooney said he attended to “simply support the RCMP.

We understand the request to fly the flag came from internally so we are here to totally support the RCMP in flying the pride flag.”

Meantime, McDonald had this to say about “our raising of the pride flag at the detachment.

“The RCMP, and particularly the Surrey RCMP, are supportive of an inclusive and diverse population and it’s important for us to embrace all cultures in our community,” he said. “There’s been a lot of people who have attend-

ed – people that support the pride flag and those that are opposed to it. I think that’s important in a democratic society,” he told Black Press Media. “We recognize there is different viewpoints but as I said before, I think it’s nice to have this level of public input in decisions of policing in the city, but again I think it’s important for us to embrace inclusivity and diversity.

Surrey RCMP has identified 18 cases since April as part of a joint initiative to deal with “distressed” properties in the city.

The idea is to improve public safety and social concerns in Surrey’s neighbourhoods.

Since then, Sergeant Chad Greig said, authorities have “worked closely” with the owners to educate them on their responsibilities and reduce calls for service.

support and safety officer for the Surrey RCMP. “Together, we can address these public safety and social issues head-on and for the betterment of the wider community at large,” she said.

Greig said a Property Owner/Problem Eviction Process package provides “pertinent information” to help owners “better understand their roles, rights and obligations.

“This empowers property owners to take greater owner-

ship and effectively manage their properties before they become a community, policing or bylaw problem,” he said.

“This package also serves as a baseline notification for uncooperative property owners which will enable expedited bylaw enforcement and financial sanctions in order to more effectively mitigate the negative impacts of problem properties on our community.”

Fletcher ignores modern science showing that clearcutting ancient trees results in the rapid loss of huge amounts of carbon accumulated over hundreds of years.

Sierra Club BC is concerned about the economic, social and ecological impact of clearcutting endangered old-growth forests.

True sustainability is leaving similar values and conditions for future generations. But B.C.’s ancient giants have been reduced to a fraction of their former extent, replaced by young, uniform forests

Elstone claims B.C.’s forest management is the most sustainable in the world. However, satellite images show that on Vancouver Island, we are losing what little forest remains intact three times faster than Brazil’s primary rainforest in the Amazon is being destroyed.

In response, David Elstone, the executive director of the Truck Loggers Association, accused our organization of not acknowledging the economic importance of oldgrowth logging and claimed that clearcutting what little remains is sustainable.

He was joined by Black Press Media columnist Tom Fletcher,

This should be a huge concern for everyone with a job in the woods.

We will not leave anything close to what we found for future generations. Plants and animal species that depend on old-growth will vanish. Climate impacts will worsen without the shield of intact ancient forests to reduce droughts, floods and fires. Degraded landscapes will impact the quality of drinking water and allow fewer options for a diverse economy that includes tourism and recreation.

Vancouver Island is protected. This is highly misleading. As the total amount of old-growth trees declines due to logging, of course the percentage that is protected goes up. B.C. could destroy 99 per cent of all old-growth, set aside one per cent and report 100 per cent protected. Is this the approach to conservation British Columbians want?

The good news is it is not too late to save what remains of B.C.’s old-growth, restore second-growth forests and transition to truly sustainable forest management.

We can still choose to save the web of life that depends on in-

tact forests and move to carefully planned selective logging. This would deliver “negative emissions” and wood products at the same time, capturing more carbon in our forests than is lost as a result of harvesting.

Creating more jobs with less ecosystem damage per cubic metre of wood deserves our full support.

The longer we wait, the harder this change will be. The first step is for industry and government to stop the denial reflected in Elstone and Fletcher’s opinion pieces.

A salute to retiring fire chief’s exemplary career Len Garis is retiring at the end of this month after 18 years as Surrey fire chief.

He has done an exemplary job in heading up the team of first responders whose roles have changed greatly during his years at the helm of the department. Firefighters used to be called to fires (naturally) and other challenging situations, such as car crashes, natural disasters and medical distress. Now they are called to all of those, but also to try to help

people who have overdosed on drugs – on the streets or in their homes.

Under Garis’ leadership, Surrey Fire Department has developed a number of innovative approaches to this pressing societal issue, and a variety of other complex issues.

This has been the underlying theme during his years heading the department – “How can we deal with these issues in a more innovative and creative way, while at the same time taking the best possible care of first responders?”

young people succumb to drug overdoses. It is also a challenge for society as a whole. How do we deal with this issue?

Garis has been much more than a team leader and working fire chief. He has been involved heavily in academic research, as an adjunct professor at the University of the Fraser Valley Centre for Public Safety and Criminal Justice Research.

Through this position, he has co-authored many studies on issues such as grow-ops, tall wood buildings,

smoke alarms, occupational health and safety, firefighters and cancer, the fire risks of smart meters and many other topics.

He has also been a member of the Christian Regenhard Centre for Emergency Response Studies (RaCERS) at John Jay College of Criminal Justice of the City University of New York; been on the faculty for parttime studies at BCIT and recently joined the B.C. Injury Research and Prevention Unit as an associate scientist emeritus.

His innovative lead-

ership has positioned Surrey Fire Department as a leader among large fire departments, not only in B.C. and across Canada, but in many other parts of the world. Surrey residents have been very well-served by the fire department for many years, and his work has ensured that this high level of service and commitment – as well as a willingness to tackle new challenges head-on – continues.

So much for ‘Safe Surrey’

Editor’s note: This missive was submitted as an open letter to Surrey’s nine MLAs. I am writing to you, MLA for Surrey, to make you aware of the dangerous course that Mayor McCallum is taking for our city with his Surrey Police Department proposal.

It was rushed to the BC Provincial Solicitor General without input from the public or even his own councillors.

The proposal was released to the public, not by the mayor but

by Mike Farnworth.

We are appalled by what it contains and what it does not contain. It asserts that the Surrey RCMP have 50 officers fewer than in reality. There are glaring omissions in cost projections. The

transition plan is not credible. So much for Safe Surrey; he is proposing less police and less safety at more cost.

During the last two weeks his staged ‘consultation’ events in Surrey were actually ‘show and tell’, with a fake police car and colouring and stickers for the children. I expected on a proposal of this gravity to be able to present and to hear briefs in public forums. The pushback is undeniable.

Dismayed citizens are flocking to sign Ivan Scott’s ‘Keep the RCMP’ petition.

Even the councillors in his coalition are defecting.

You must insist that the BC legislature takes these concerns seriously. At the best the proposal should be rejected outright.

Insist that the Surrey public is consulted in a meaningful way before further action is taken. At the very least the proposal should be returned to the Mayor with questions and comments that must be seriously addressed before it can be reconsidered.

The Cloverdale Ladies Auxiliary held its fourth-annual donation luncheon last Wednesday, June 19, giving funds to community organizations and local students.

The Ladies Auxiliary is a non-profit organization that volunteers its time and fundraises to enrich its community.

Over its 92 years in the community, the Cloverdale Legion and Ladies Auxiliary has raised millions of dollars for the community. According to past president Jan Campbell-Brewer, the LA has donated $390,000 to various community groups over the past five years alone.

At the luncheon, funds were donated to Surrey Memorial Hospital’s children’s mental health program, which will help fund art and music therapy programs; the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society, which transports cancer patients to and from medical appointments within the Lower Main-

“In Canada, only nine per cent of plastic is recycled, most ends up in landfills, and approximately 29,000 tonnes are discharged to the environment annually,” said Aldag.

The report concluded that although Canadian consumers and industries have “good intentions” when it comes to recycling and using plastic alternatives, it is not yet an economically competitive option within the country.

“We need to fix this so that the environmental costs of plastics are taken into account.

This would allow businesses and consumers to make better decisions to reduce plastic use, to reuse plastic or ensure it is recycled,” said Aldag.

On top of banning harmful, single-use plastics, the report recommends that Canada should have zero plastic waste by 2030 — 100 per cent per cent of plastic products should be reusable or recyclable by then.

Aldag, who is chair of the standing committee on environment and sustainable development, explained that the federal government is “not saying that plastics are bad, it’s how plastics are being disposed of” when interviewed by the Reporter in mid-June.

“You can’t go after all plastics,” said Aldag.

Cloverdale-Langley City MP John Aldag tabled a report on plastic pollution in the House of Commons last week.

The Last Straw: Turning the Tide on Plastic Pollution in Canada includes 21 recommendations that would allow the federal government to take a “leadership role in addressing plastic pollution in Canada,” according to a news release.

Although Canada is not a leading global source of plastic waste in the world’s oceans, both Canadian-made and foreign-created plastics impact the Canadian environment.

Marine litter can be found along all of Canada’s coasts and freshwater areas — including the Great Lakes, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada. In the last 25 years, 700,000 volunteers have collected more than 1,200 tonnes of waste from Canadian shorelines.

The recommendations in the report “aim to increase the recyclability of plastic goods, avoid plastics being landfilled, and harmonize plastic recycling systems and product standards across Canada. The report stresses the need for increased cooperation among federal, provincial, territorial, and interested governments, as well as industry, to address plastic pollution,” read the press release.

Swansong Ride2Survive raises $1M-plus in single-day cycle

Saturday’s swansong Ride2Survive raised more than $1 million for a cancer-related cause.

The 15th and final fundraiser of its kind saw close to 150 brave cyclists pedal from Kelowna to Delta in a single day, during an annual event designed to reflect a typically hard day in the life of a cancer patient in treatment.

Starting at around 3 a.m. in the Okanagan city, the cyclists rolled southwest over the next 20-something hours – a gruelling experience for all involved, through

whatever weather Mother Nature throws their way.

It was cold on the Coquihalla Highway at times, and some headwinds slowed the cyclists on their way to the Lower Mainland.

At around midnight, the finish line was at Cap’s South Shore Cycle, on Scott Road near 80th Avenue.

A small army of volunteers, including cyclists and support crew, has raised more than $8 million since it all began as a much

smaller fundraiser in the mid-2000s.

On Monday morning (June 24), the event’s donation website showed a total of $1,062,387 raised during the 2019 ride.

For event founders Kerry and Vicki Kunzli, who live in North Delta, and other volunteers who plan the annual event, the time has come to close this chapter of their lives.

“The logistical challenges of doing the ride are getting fragile, with all of it,” Kerry Kunzli said before Saturday’s final ride.

“It’s bittersweet,” he added, “because I was there for the first one and all the way through. We’re looking forward to just getting back on our bikes instead of planning this big ride all the time.”

The initiative will

live on as a “fundraising bike club,” Kerry noted.

“Many riders still want to be part of this,” he said. “We’ll still do banquets and pole sits, raffles and fundraisers, whether we ride from Kelowna or around the block. It’s a long ride, and a lot of people still want to ride with the club.

It’ll be a community club – a fundraising club with a cycling problem,” he added with a laugh.

Kerry said “it’s been quite a ride,” in more ways than one.

“It blows us away when we start thinking back what’s taken place here,” he said.

“It’s a pile of money we’ve raised, and yeah, we’re proud of that. We never imagined what this turned into over the past 15 years.”

When Bif Naked hits Surrey’s Canada Day stage on Monday, July 1, it’ll be exactly a decade since her last concert in the city, at the very same venue.

In the summer of 2009, her performance at Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre was not a very pleasant experience for the longtime rocker, because she was recovering from breast-cancer treatment that hit hard.

“I still had my chemo haircut and catheter tubing in my neck,” Naked recalled in a phone interview with Black Press Media.

“I remember every moment of that last show, and I was choking on stage and every time I jumped, my jugular vein would constrict because I had so many problems with the surgical port and all this other stuff that goes on behind the scenes with your breast-cancer treatment,” Naked continued.

She just couldn’t perform the same that day, she said.

“I was completely self-conscious and I was embarrassed about my hair, and it was just so many things, it was crazy.”

Also that day, some women Naked had met in her hospital c h e m o - t r e at m e n t program came to the show, making it a hugely emotional one for her.

“They were in their pink boas, and even some of the members of our Run for the Cure (team) came,” Naked recalled. “Even talking about it makes me totally verklempt because that type of sorority never gets old. Those of us who do survive, literal-

It’s been fun, just amazing.”

At Surrey’s Canada Day event, in front of thousands of flag-waving people, Naked will co-head-

line with the band Our Lady Peace. Her band includes Allen along with Chiko Misomali on drums, Ferdy Belland on bass guitar and Doug Fury on guitar.

She’s keen to return to the big stage once more.

“Because we are given 60 minutes for our set length, we really try to cram in every song possible, and make the set explosive,” Naked explained. “I love the big stage and the outdoor shows and we hope the weather is great.

“I know for sure we will play all the crowd favourites like ‘Spaceman’ and ‘I Love Myself Today,’ but I will definitely do a special dedication of ‘Lucky’ to commemorate my 10 years of surviving cancer and dedicate the song to our breast cancer sisters still fighting.”

Fund arts programs in Surrey Schools

by Heather Brand It’s a common joke among high school theatre, music, dance and visual arts students that arts programs receive nearly no funding, and that fundraisers must be held to afford even the most basic of supplies.

This is usually caused by the fairly commonly held belief that arts courses are unnecessary or unimportant. However, this opinion could not be further from reality as arts programs offer numerous benefits to students.

Participation in arts programs can benefit students in not only more academic courses but also in jobs later in life. They accomplish this by encouraging the development of necessary life skills such as focus, discipline, dedication, teamwork, open-mindedness, and of course creativity. These are skills that are essential in many professions and yet aren’t necessarily taught or encouraged by courses that students are forced to take.

Moreover, arts programs allow students a vital opportunity to spend time with others who share their interests. Especially for students who have a difficult time interacting with others and making friends, the chance to spend time with those who share their passions is excellent for social and mental health. It is clear that, despite what the majority of people believe, arts programs are essential to the development of important life and social skills in students.

This renders the fact that they are consistently underfunded and dismissed by governments and schools extremely upsetting, and it is certainly something that needs to change immediately.

Before SkyTrain, we need to fix broken bus services in Cloverdale

by Jasmine Randhawa People of all ages rely on transit as a primary source of transport, and yet

transit bus services do not meet expectations of its users due to lack of efficiency and long wait times.

This is especially worrisome for teens, who are ineligible to drive and are dependent on bus services to get to school.

For example, Ecole Salish Secondary does not have proper bus service that goes northbound or southbound. This, added with the lack of sidewalks on one side of the road, results in an immense pedestrian rush after school, adding to the traffic. Furthermore, the unavailability of proper bus service that goes north and southbound compels teens to walk in harsh weather conditions.

This is nothing to say of the difficulties unpredictable transit timing has on adults commuting to work via bus services.Traffic, a shortage of bus drivers and a lack of bus routes all lead to this unpredictability. Despite the affordability (when considering the price of gas) and environ-

mental benefits, it is still seen as more efficient to drive.

The p ro p o s e d Surrey-Langley SkyTrain project will not be a catch-all for fixing existing transit issues in Cloverdale.

I believe we should focus on increasing our bus services so that those who rely on the transit system to get to school, work, or around the city have a reliable and efficient option to do so.

Why volunteering is vital for the individual and the community

by Hazel McKinney To volunteer is not only to expand and develop yourself but also your community. To help others without payment is a way to understand different point of views. It also helps build empathy and, depending on the type of volunteering, can lead to a passion or goal in life.

To do without this is not to be less than

others, but to miss out on an experience that provides an advantage for the rest of your life.

Knowing how to talk, handle, and care for something without expecting anything in return is a type of kindness that must be learned through practice.

This benefits the community in several ways. Through service, a person becomes more rounded and gains knowledge, which will add to both their résumé and personality. This can lead to greater schooling and jobs, which can bring money to the area.

As wages are becoming more costly for the employer, volunteering can also provide a helping hand to those who may not be able to afford that much staff. Many food banks, respected organizations, are run by volunteers and would no doubt be much more expensive to maintain if not for the generosity of the workers. But because of them, the people who need food, get it.

If the volunteer opportunity is nature-oriented, then it helps to keep the neighborhood healthy and appealing. It also educates the workers on gardening and the impacts of climate change.

Volunteering is important for everyone, not just teenagers. It is emotionally and mentally awakening, developing a person into a knowledgeable human being. It advances our communities, our self-education of the world, and is a good way to build a sense of teamwork and group spirit.

We must address violence against children

by Christina Park All around the world, violence occurs against children — whether it be exposure to war, physical, emotional or sexual abuse, bullying, cyberbullying, deprivation or neglect.

This violence strips

children of their selfhood and hinders them from becoming who they really are. It is important that this issue is addressed because violence inflicted on children can carry into their adulthood, having far-reaching impact on future generations.

Violence is happening at a wide scale abroad, and it demands that action should take place.

One of the largest issues is the number of refugee children.

According to the UN Refugee Agency, there are 25.4 million refugees across the globe, and over half of that number are children and teens under the age of 18. They have been forced from home, by conflict or persecution, including from wars in Syria, Iraq and South Sudan.

Where will these children be fifty years from now? Will their dreams have been fulfilled, if violence did not kill them?

Violence against children is not a thing of yesterday or something far-off; it

happens right here in Canada. Domestic abuse traumatizes youth, and carries a long-term impact.

Children are also harassed by other children through physical, verbal and cyber-bullying.

This violence must be addressed now before it is taught to the next generation.

There are a number of practical ways to combat this violence.

On a international level, countries should following the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child — laws in countries should specifically state the right of every child to be protected against violence.

Locally, awareness should be raised in schools and homes, teaching children the negative impacts of abuse, assault and bullying, and teaching them to speak up if targeted. Abroad, in places where children have difficulty finding basic facilities, they must be reached either indirectly by funding or directly with on-site shelters and schools.

Finally, it is children who can join in the movement of fighting violence that occurs against children.

Violence against children is an important topic to address because it ultimately deprives children of what every child should have: a childhood.

It deprives them of their innocence, their brightness, and their dreams. Each child will grow up to be the artists, politicians, scientists, and technicians of tomorrow, and they must be protected so that they reach their dreams rather than becoming victims and perpetrators of ongoing violence and hurt.

We must take action now to end violence against children both at home and abroad, because each child is a valuable leader of tomorrow.

Crime Stoppers is reminding Metro Vancouver residents that they shouldn’t let their guard down, not even on those long summer nights.

Sunlight doesn’t equal safety, and safeguards should be taken at all hours of the day, especially as the day winds down into evening.

Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers executive director Linda Annis, who also serves as a Surrey city councillor, demonstrated the “9 at 9” safety approach to home security in Cloverdale on June 19 with Surrey RCMP Insp.

This time of year, when the days get longer and residents are unwinding is a time “for everybody to be extra careful when we go away for summer or, if we’re doing a stay-vacation, that we don’t get too lax about things,” said Annis.

According to a Crime Stoppers press release, “Burglaries often show no sign of forced entry, demonstrating a need to remind everyone that “nine” common-sense precautions taken about “9” o’clock each evening can make a big difference. Every summer, people still make it

“Open doors and windows, unlocked cars in the driveway, and leaving valuables like bikes sitting outside your yard are invitations to crooks. No one can watch everything around the house all the time, even from the back patio,” said Annis.

“Brighter evenings can leave us with a false sense of security.

We should all remember to do a quick, basic security check around the house every night of the year whether it’s light out or dark. It’s common sense,” she

Here are the nine things that Crime Stoppers is urging every resident do at 9 p.m.: 1. Remove everything from inside your car, including loose change, garage door openers and pop bottles.

2. Roll up your car windows and lock the doors.

3. Lock up all bikes, ladders and even garden equipment — don’t leave your lawnmower out.

4. Make sure your garage door is closed, and that the door leading into the house from inside the garage is locked.

5. Close and lock all the doors and windows of your home.

6. Set your alarm, if you have one, and be sure to regularly check your video security equipment.

7. Leave an outside light on overnight to illuminate your front door.

8. Make sure that any package deliveries are picked up from your front step promptly.

9. Don’t let newspapers or mail pile up, as this will indicate that no one’s home.

Cloverdale hockey player heads to World Cup in Czech Republic Gavin Pooni, 15, will play for Team

Cloverdale ball hockey player Gavin Pooni is in the Czech Republic this week, representing his country in the 2019 World Junior Cup.

The 15-year-old Salish Secondary student will be playing for Team Canada West, and facing off against teams from Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Great Britain.

Gavin has been the

top points leader in his division in Surrey Minor Ball Hockey for the last two years, but he brings more to the field than just goal scoring.

His biggest strengths are his work ethic, and not

giving up, he told the Reporter. “That, and I like to battle pretty good in the corners,” he said.

Though he’s now representing his country on the world stage for ball hockey, Gavin didn’t initially find success in the sport.

When he tried out for a local ball hockey league when he was 12, he “didn’t even make the team.”

Coaches said that his speed just wasn’t there.

“A few years later, I guess I’ve stepped my game up,” he said.

“Now that I look at it, they’d probably take me in a heartbeat.”

But getting to that point took years of perseverance and
