A Story Worth Sharing

Have you ever seen or met someone possessed by demons?

Yeah. You have.

“Possessed by demons” or “having an unclean spirit” may be the biblical language, but whatever language you use, we’ve encountered them, even experienced them.

Historically, we personified or anthropomorphized anything dark, malevolent or evil as a demon - I just did by saying “them” - though the word didn’t specifically mean that.

All evils were associated with the Devil and most likely sprang from Hell. That gave us an opportunity to say that the characteristics and behaviours associated with it weren’t us - it was a demon possessing us or acting through us.

Cynically, that might sound like an excuse, both for the behaviour and how we respond to it. But I can’t argue with it.

I believe that we’re created in the image of God and that’s love. Anything that isn’t that, well, it could be a demon.

No, my issue isn’t with the language, it’s how we use it.

I don’t believe in demonic possession in the whole “hell-spawn of Satan” way we’ve historically used it.

Let’s look at the townspeople. At first, their response to the man’s “demons” was to lock him away. Then, when he broke free, they let him go somewhere he could be alone and not bother anyone. Out of sight, where they would’t have to encounter him. Along comes Jesus and he is healed.

Do the townspeople celebrate, joyfully embrace the man and thank Jesus? No. They’re afraid and ask Jesus to leave.

That’s not the end of the story.

For the townspeople, it might just be the beginning. They’re still broken and afraid, not just of the demons, but of the power that healed them.

So Jesus tells the healed man to stay and share his story, the story of his own brokenness and healing, his encounter with Jesus and his experience of God. In sharing that story, others might come to understand both the presence of real “demons” in our lives and the power of Jesus to engage them.

In hearing that story, they might know that the power of Jesus is love and learn connection, understanding and relationship.

In being that story, they might find true community, the “common unity” of engaging the unique, diverse, frail, sometimes broken, sometimes fearful hearts that are in all of us.

The annual Battle River Ride for STARS is a necessity.

That is according to ride organizers, considering the Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service (STARS) flew 14 missions to the Stettler/Castor area last year.

The 14-mile ride, which hits the trail July 13 and has earned the nickname Hoofs for Helicopters, takes a scenic trek on private land through the rolling hillsides along the Battle River — about 30 km northeast of Castor.

“I always say that STARS is an unwanted necessity,” said Henry Thomas, president of the Battle River Ride for STARS. “You don’t want to have to use

That is why I think this is so important.”

As the ride enters year 11, it continues to attract about 130 riders that collect pledges to go on the five-hour ride.

“It is an absolutely incredible view. I was blown away by how gorgeous it was last year and I’m excited to be a part of the ride this year,” she said.

“It’s events like these that make a difference for patients, families, friends and their communities that are affected.

The average cost per flight ends up around $5,400, meaning about $70,000 was spent on missions to the region last year.

“And because of our unique funding model in Alberta, a patient doesn’t ever have to pay,” Crouse said, noting Alberta Health Services funds 20 per cent, with STARS funding the rest of its operating costs.

As always, Thomas is hoping the ride can bring in about $30,000.

“The closest to reaching that goal was four years ago when we raised close to $27,000,” he added.

The cost is $45 per rider, though that fee is waived if the rider collects over $75 in pledges.

Bashaw hoping to win replacement for town fire engine

Town places bid on used unit being auctioned by Camrose

Bashaw may soon have a replacement for its current town fire engine.

Bashaw Fire Department Chief Jordan Lee came before council at its June 17 meeting and came away with a commitment for financial support in a bid on a used fire engine being auctioned off by the City of Camrose.

The fire engine is a 1992 Volve FE Tilt Cab diesel automatic triple combination pumper fitted with a 1050 gallon per minute pump along with a 500 gallon water tank and 25 gallon foam tank.

It was being sold off through a closed bidding process.

The town’s current engine is a 1982 International and has endured a number of issues in recent years. The department has been working to find a replacement since it completed its fundraising for a new rescue truck last year.

Lee explained the availability of this truck, and at starting price of about $20,000, makes it

a near perfect opportunity to purchase a newto-them unit.

“Our current town engine has not passed its pump pressure tests and would need at least $8,000 in repairs with no guarantee of how long it would last,” he told council.

“The truck does fit in our hall and some of our members have trained on this unit in Camrose, so we are familiar with how it works and operates.

It would be a shame to miss out.”

Lee added that a bid was made earlier this year on a $12,000 unit that was in worse shape than the Camrose truck, but the winning bid ended up around $19,000. The other bonus is the Camrose unit will come with ladders, a monitor and other equipment.

“I’m fairly confident that we can get (the unit) and if the town will cover the added funds, it will mean the firefighter’s fundraising can be used to purchase other tools and equipment,” he said, noting that fund is presently sitting around $11,000.

CAO Theresa Fuller told council $20,000 was

approved in 2018 for fire department capital spending and that about $27,000 remains in a reserve specific to replacement of the town fire truck.

Coun. Darren Pearson suggested pulling any extra money for the bid from that reserve, followed quickly by Coun. Rob McDonald stating, “let’s buy a fire truck.”

A motion approving the bid was carried unanimously. However, it wasn’t known when the town would find out if the bid was successful.

Fire status report Lee also provided council a brief update, not-

ing the department has responded to a total of 15 calls in 2019 — nine of those in Camrose County — and that the members are looking into purchasing gas detection monitors for use during incidents.

“I’ve also put in a request to Camrose County that, instead of purchasing two new sets of bunker gear, we use that money to buy wildland firefighting coveralls,” he said.

Doing that would provide around 12 nomex fire-resistant coveralls to use during wildland/ grass firefighting and mean a lot less effort expended having to fight these fires in bunker gear.

Rural crime bill tabled

A central Alberta politician is maintaining the pressure on the federal government in hopes it will do something to keep Canada’s rural population safe.

Red Deer-Lacombe MP Blaine Calkins recently tabled a private pember’s bill in the House of Commons that is designed to protect rural residents from increasing crime.

Bill C-458 was tabled on June 14 and was given first reading that same day.

The bill proposes amending the criminal code to add evidence an offence was “directed at a property or person that was vulnerable because of their remoteness from emergency services as anaggravating circumstance for sentencing purposes.”

Calkins said this would mean longer sentences for criminals who target people living in remote or rural areas.

“I’m tabling this bill now; because the Liberal dominated public safety committee didn’t offer any real solutions in their twopage report on the

study of rural crime. I find this to be an appalling lack of sensitivity and victims in rural areas deserve better” he said.

A task force was created in 2017 by Alberta Conservative MPs representing rural areas and they collaborated with Albertans concerned about rural crime in creating a 30 page report.

One key message the MPs heard throughout the consultations was a need to stop the “revolving door” of repeat offenders in our justice system.

“I am very proud to have tabled Bill C-458 on behalf of the thousands of Albertans who have been victimized, sometimes repeatedly, by criminals who purposely target law-abiding citizens living in rural or remote areas.” said Calkins.

Earl Dreeshen, Red Deer-Mountain View MP, who second the bill in the House of Commons, stated criminals are getting smarter in who they pick to prey on.

He said criminals know the property being targeted in remote and away from emergency services, such as the police.

“Bill C-458 will require the courts to consider this intentional act during sentencing,” said Dreeshen.

All it takes is something simple

Most people can understand that, sometimes, things are going to go off the rails and there is absolutely nothing we can do about it.

In a lot of those cases, the people pick themselves up and dust themselves off before trudging off to the next task without giving a second thought.

However, there are times where circumstances take place that send a person for a loop and they are left wondering what truck is going to hit them next.

Worse yet, if that individual is up against some time constraints or a job that needs done, the stress and anxiety tend to take over and leave that person in a muddle.

It is times like that when I am more than grateful for the helpful nature and hospitality of those living in small prairie towns.

Yes, even in these days, there remain communities that showcase what living in rural outposts used to be like — neighbours helping neighbours and being kind to strangers that were in need of some assistance.

Places like this still put others above themselves — providing a ride to someone in need, working hard to find a solution to someone’s problem even at their own expense, apologizing when what they try doesn’t work, trusting someone with a vehicle and not expecting any compensation or thanks in return.

It’s not that larger towns or cities don’t

Help injured animals but don’t be a kidnapper Birds are creatures I admire. Not just for their grace of flight and various songs and fascinating behaviours, but for their adaptability. It seemed to me, growing up in Calgary, seeing birds nest in broken lights, all manner of buildings, under bridges, etc., and the flocks of scavenger birds always scrounging for food, that as a whole, birds are rather hardy - at least the city varieties: pigeons, sparrows, seagulls, crows and magpies, being among the most common. I’d almost wager that should a nuclear apocalypse occur it would be these birds and cockroaches that would survive. There isn’t much variety in a big city though. You pretty much have to go to a bird sanctuary to catch a glimpse of even a chickadee.

That’s one reason I appreciate living in Ponoka so much. In our own backyard,

or walking along the trails in the river valley, we’ve been delighted to spot some unexpectedly colourful, exotic-looking species I couldn’t identify but would love to learn more about.

Crows, though not one of the colourful or unexpected varieties of birds mentioned, are one type of bird I learned more about recently. Did you know that in May, June and July, adolescent (also called “fledgling”) crows spend several days on the ground learning to fly?

Two recent news items highlight this — the latest Trans-Mountain pipeline approval and a debate in the provincial legislature.

On the pipeline announcement, the divisiveness started even before the official press release was presented, with opponents questioning the legitimacy of consultations and vowing to fight tooth and nail on some alleged moral high ground.

Over at the Alberta legislature, the proclamation following the election that a new era where the government “will raise the bar of civility and decorum” has allegedly been tossed aside faster than most drivers fly on the QEII at the start a long weekend.

In an all-night debate over a bill that is said to defer union contract negotiations, though opponents allege it’s designed to bust up previous contracts to help cut costs, Alberta’s Premier was busy handing out ear plugs to his party’s MLA to help them not listen to the NDP’s comments.

Both of these situations go to show that, while society has progressed in so many different ways, many other sectors and individuals are choosing to remain swimming in the selfish pool instead of crawling out, cleaning off and doing what is in the best interest of all — as shown by most small town residents.

But that is…just an observation.

by and bring them food and teach them how to fly until they become practiced enough to venture out on their own.

A well-meaning bird lover may come across an adolescent crow and mistake it for being orphaned or abandoned. Similarly, hares and fawns are often mistakenly “rescued.”

Every spring, wildlife centres in Alberta are overrun with baby animals brought in by well-intentioned, though ultimately misguided, concerned citizens.

For some animals it is normal for the young to be left unattended for long periods of time. A doe will leave her fawn in a secluded area while distracting predators, as will a hare, leaving the babies for most of the day to keep its own scent from attracting trouble.

Before becoming an accidental kidnapper, experts suggest waiting for a while to see if mom returns.

If an animal is clearly injured, that is a different matter. The sooner an injured animal receives proper care, the better its chances will be.

In Alberta, only certified wildlife rehabilitation centres are legally permitted to give long-

term care for orphaned or injured wildlife.

To find a centre near you that can handle the type of animal you’ve encountered, call the Alberta Wildlife Hotline at 888924-2444.

One such centre is the Medicine River Wildlife Centre (MRWC). The centre is in Spruce View, but also has a first aid station in Red Deer. Their staff are dedicated and passionate about helping animals.

The MRWC recommends the following for most injured animal cases: “Cover the patient with a towel, coat, or blanket and transfer them, towel and all, to a cardboard box with no air holes and close the lid. Keep the animal warm, dark, and quiet. Never feed an injured patient until you’ve received direction from a wildlife hospital. Contact a wildlife hospital for further instructions as soon as possible as delays may cause further illness or death in your patient. If you are unsure or fearful to approach a wild patient, or the patient is a larger or more aggressive species, please stay with it and call a wildlife hospital for help.”

Our family recently had the experience of attempting to rescue an injured adolescent crow. It was determined after sending a photo and observing it walking awkwardly, that it was indeed injured and not just learning to fly, and we made arrangements to take the bird to the first aid station in Red Deer.

All recommendations were followed, though sadly as we were about the leave, the crow died suddenly. It was likely too far gone.

Some may ask why even bother trying?

Crows are a dime-a-dozen. To the wildlife centre worker I interviewed last fall while I was freelancing though, helping injured wildlife wasn’t even a question. She said as most wildlife injuries are caused by human activity, we owe it to them to try, and that it is always worth trying.

It is with loving hearts that we say goodbye to our dear mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother Elsie Hunter who left us on June 8, 2019 at the age of 101.

She will be lovingly missed and remembered by her children Linda (Ross) Fletcher of Red Deer and Douglas (Diane) Hunter of Stettler; grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Chris, Kate, Emily and Nathan; Bryce, Mackenna and Sydney; Todd, Karen, Ethan and Ty; and Robin, Alyson and Waylon.

Elsie is survived by sisters-in-law Annie Hunter, Kathleen Lindop and Arlene Felstrom as well as many nieces and nephews. Elsie was pre-deceased by Glenn, her loving husband of 64 years, her brother Rev. Harold Felstrom, Herbert Hunter and Stu Lindop.

Elsie led a fulfilled active life and touched the hearts and lives of many people. She will be remembered for her love of life and enjoyment of family and friends.

A Celebration of Life was held Friday, June 21 at the Bashaw United Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the Bashaw Cemetery or any charity of your choice.

Meeting Creek couple honoured with prestigious award

Gussie and Faye Adams recognized as ‘Legends of the Breed’

An area couple were honoured to be recognized with the highest award available.

Gussie and Faye Adam were presented with the Legend of Breed award by the Alberta Shorthorn Association (ASA) at its annual general meeting and field day hosted June 15 at Prospect Hill Shorthorns, run by Les and Shelley Peterson, near Meeting Creek.

“This is was very unexpected, and we are so honored by this award. This award goes to the entire family as it was really a family affair,” Faye said when the award was presented.

“There are so many people we don’t know here.

It is nice to to see the breed going forward. These are great people and a great breed.”

The Adams, now 78 and 70 respectively, started their Shorthorns near Ardrossan a few years after the two were married in 1967 after Gussie was persuaded by an old neighbour to try a Shorthorn bull in their commerical herd.

That first bull, purchased at a sale in Lacombe in 1974, ended up being Sunalta Silver Perfect — a grand champion from Walter Chinnery’s herd in Coronation. A short time later, the Adams paid Chinnery’s farm a visit and walked away buying six heifers and they never looked back.

The operation, called GAFA Shorthorns, moved to the Meeting Creek area just four years later with a focus on breeding quality Shorthorns and

promoting the breed.

The Adams were successful in doing just that by developing fast-gain, well muscled animals and selling top performing bulls and heifers around the world — from B.C. and Nova Scotia to Mexico, Scotland and Germany. The couple were also named the 1985 Alberta Breeder of the Year for their efforts.

“Bulls are important, but good females make the difference,” explained Faye.

“Selection of females for milking ability, good udders, fertility and easy calving were of prime importance.”

At its height, the operation had a breeding herd of about 100 head, which made it all the more important that their three girls helped out.

Tammy, Cheryl and Connie did their usual chores that helped reach certain goals, while Tammy and Cheryl’s participation in 4-H and the ASA made showing off GAFA Shorthorns much easier.

“Gussie was helpful getting our cattle ready for shows in Edmonton and Calgary, but the actual showing was entirely left to our girls,” Faye added, noting showing wasn’t for Connie so when the other two left home that was it for the show circuit.

Along with breeding, the couple were involved with helping run the ASA over the years with Faye volunteering to be the secretary-treasurer for several years.

“My time (with the ASA) was very much a

Photo submitted family affair,” she stated, noting that the ASA newsletter got done with lots of help from Gussie and the girls.

“Computers and word programs were just starting at that time. Copying, compiling and mailing of the publication was truly a family operation.

So was the compiling of sales catalogs for several years. My family’s willingness to handle things

at home allowed me to travel to meetings and events as requested.”

The couple finally decided in 2007 to wind down the operation, selling their final animal just three years ago. ”The friendships and experiences we had during our years as active members of the Shorthorn family will never be forgotten,” added Faye.

NOT JUST LITTLE BITS OF FUN - Bashaw’s U5 and U7 Tim Bits soccer teams had a blast June 15 at a fun tournament held in Wetaskiwin. The clubs enjoyed the sun as well as team pictures, Photos submitted complete with medals and a trophy, before ending the season June 24 back home with games and a wind up party.
