From our Mayors On behalf of Smithers Town Council and our entire community, it is truly an honour to congratulate the graduating class of 2019. Graduation is one of the biggest occasions of the year in our little town – and rightly so. After all, if it truly “takes a village to raise a child,” then it’s only appropriate that the whole village gets to celebrate. Grad marks the culmination of years of effort by parents, family members, teachers, administrators, support staff, and most importantly the students themselves, who can be tremendously proud of their achievement. To the graduates, thank you for your contributions to our community. To those of you whose plans take you to new places and new opportunities, we wish you the best of luck. We hope your path brings
you back here one day. To those who choose to build their lives here in Smithers, we look forward to working alongside you to make this the best town it can be. Amidst the many school, career and family opportunities that lie ahead, and no matter where you end up living, I encourage you to consider the wellbeing of your community. The measure of our future success will lie in our ability to take care of one another, to act with empathy, and think of future generations. Your skills and talents will be needed more than ever. On behalf of the District of New Hazelton, I would like to offer congratulations to the graduates of 2019! We recognize the 13 years of ambition, dedication, perseverance, fortitude, and failures that it took to reach this day. This is an exciting time in your life! You should all be proud and bask in the excitement and joy of this moment, for you will cherish these memories throughout your life. Every single one of you has strength and talent that is unique only to you. I challenge you to grasp onto that and allow it to drive you through your life. The challenges, the accomplishments, the struggles, and the failures do not end here, they become greater. Do not be frightened by this, because as they become greater so do you. Failure does not mean you quit, we all fail and are then faced with a choice: to let our failure defeat us or to let it teach us. I ask that you choose to let your failures teach you: teach you to be kind, thoughtful, driven, and to never give up. You each have a talent and it is your decision in how you will apply it to your life, but
I hope you will realize that this talent is only great if you use it for something other than yourself. Do not leave here hoping to achieve only personal success. Instead, leave here thinking about how, through your actions and abilities, you will add joy, kindness, motivation, and progress to the communities you call home. Your families, towns, cities, countries, and the global community are all affected by your presence within them. That is a powerful thing, and I know each and every one of you has the capability to do something incredible with it. The evidence is right here today. This graduation is proof of what you can accomplish through your talents and the strength they offer you. Principals Message To our Graduating Class, A sincere blessing on all those graduating from BVCS and the other schools in the local area. Our theme verse for this year’s graduation ceremony is from the book of Proverbs: “Listen to advice and accept instruction so that you may gain wisdom in the future.” Our deep hope for our graduates – in whatever path they choose – is that their minds and heart will be open to true knowledge and wisdom that flows from the Creator himself. Education is not confined to what happens between the walls of a classroom and we want graduates to continue to embrace an attitude of life-long learning and the pursuit of Godly wisdom throughout their entire lives.

Principal’s Message To our Graduates
Colossians 2: 6-7 “Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” In these verses we see the centrality of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In him and through him we have all that we have. We are his. The idea of rooted implies life and growth. Established means that you have grown from a seedling to a sturdy tree or plant. This passage also points to a transition. You are called to go from having been taught (past tense) to the next step. Of course we all need to be taught all our life long, it does not stop after Grade 12, and for that you have the Bible, the Holy Spirit and fellow Christians. Each of you have been taught by your parents and the churches you are members of, how to walk in faith, in Christ. Your parents tasked ECRS to assist them by teaching all the courses in a way that furthered your understanding of how to apply God’s word to

• April 16 – Hunter Jim Martell kills a Grizzly-polar bear hybrid on Banks Island in the Northwest Territories. • May 16 – Canada 2006 Census day. • May 29 – A labour dispute leads to a one-day shutdown of the Toronto Transit Commission, stranding commuters in Toronto, Ontario.
• May 31 – 100 millimeters of rain in a few hours caused landslides in and around the small town of La Tuque, in central Quebec, damaging roads and flooding houses. State emergency was decreed right away and people were evacuated. • June 2 – Terrorism plot—more than 400 police officers raid homes in Toronto and Mississauga, Ontario, and arrest 15 people (10 men and five youths), part of a terrorist cell. • July 7 – Two police officers are shot and killed in Spiritwood, Saskatchewan. • July 17 – A series of severe thunderstorms hits Ontario, causing the worst damage to the province’s power grid since the Ice Storm of 1998 and killing two people. Some communities in the Sudbury, Manitoulin and Nipissing regions go without power for a week before it can be restored. See the Great Lakes-Atlantic Coast derecho. • August 2 – The day after record-breaking heat in Ontario and severe thunderstorms hit a vast swath of central and eastern Ontario. Eight confirmed tornadoes touch down, the single largest one-day outbreak in the province since 1985. Amazingly no fatalities result.
