Gur Sikh Temple National Historic Site
The Gur Sikh Temple National Historic Site of Canada is located on a one-acre property in the centre of Abbotsford. Built in 1911, it was designated a national historic site of Canada in 2002. It is the oldest surviving example of the temples which played a crucial religious, social and political role in the pioneer phase of Sikh immigration to North America. www.canadiansikhheritage.ca

Clayburn Village Clayburn Village est. 1905 and located at the foot of Sumas Mountain, is reminiscent of a turn-of-the-century English village, featuring brick buildings with neat gardens surrounded by white picket fences. The area was designated a historic site in 1996. It was built by the Clayburn Company to provide employee housing and services. Parking off Maclure Rd. | North .2km / South 1.6km MILD GRADES A gem on Abbotsford’s Discovery Trail. Explore the trails and enjoy the wetlands, native plants and wildlife including birds, ducklings and ducks and frogs.
Clayburn Creek Park
McKee Road and Blauson Blvd. | 2km MODERATE GRADES A wooded forest walking trail above the north bank of Clayburn Creek. Enjoy bird watching on this recreational gravel trail located near Clayburn Village. It’s popular for hiking, biking, jogging and bird watching.
Stoney Creek Park Trail/ Bateman Park
Bateman Rd. | 1.2km
MILD TO STEEP GRADES Take a walk along the trails and bridges which crisscross the stream throughout Bateman Park. The trail is multi-use gravel. Provides fall viewing of the west coast salmon migration and great bird watching including birds of prey such as barred owls, redtailed hawks and Coopers hawks. See one of the largest Douglas fir trees in Abbotsford.
Clearbrook Park to Downes Bowl Clearbrook Rd.
A recreation green space with Downes Bowl located in the centre with surrounding hills and wetland. Terrain makes for both easy and hilly trails. A popular park for walkers, joggers and cyclists with the variety of trails found in the park.
Sumas Mountain Trail
Sumas Mountain Rd. | 14.0km RATED DIFFICULT A trail used primarily for hiking and camping from May - October. An out and back trail offers scenic views of the Fraser River, Sumas Prairie and Vedder Mountain, to name a few. The trail can be muddy, slippery and steep in some places.

Willband Creek Park Bateman Rd. | North loop 1.6km / South loop 2.3km MILD GRADES This multi-use gravel trail is built around stormwater detention ponds with two loop trails that connect to each other. Suitable for all ages and fitness levels and popular for walkers, runners, bikers and birdwatchers. Some sections prone to flood during heavy rain.
Albert Dyck Trail
Walmsley Ave. | 1.7km GENTLE GRADES Located in Albert Dyck Memorial Park, this gravel trail wraps around the man-made lake in the park’s centre. The perfect place for swimming and fishing or to watch wake-boarding and waterskiing in the summer.

4214 - 4444 Lakemount Rd. | 2km to first lookout INTERMEDIATE LEVEL This trail is the bottom portion of the Glen Ryder Trail. It is just over 2km one way with an elevation gain of 406m. On average it takes hikers 40 - 45 minutes to the first lookout. Hikers can continue another 3.5km to Taggart Peak.

Trails are located in the agriculture heartland of Sumas Prairie. These trails are perfect for walkers, runners, cyclists and horseback riding. The banks of Sumas River and Vedder Canal are popular for birdwatchers.
Following the banks of the Fraser River, the trail is well groomed for walkers, runners, horseback riders and cyclists and is popular year-round with something to see no matter what the time of year.

McMillan Youthpark 34778 OLD YALE ROAD The skatepark is on the south west corner of the intersection of Old Yale Road and McMillan Road. Parking is available behind the Abbotsford Recreation Centre. A popular 25,000 sqft street scape style park providing fun and challenging opportunities for a wide range of skating styles and ability levels. It offers skateable benches and has a basketball hoop.
Mouat Skatepark 3106 CLEARBROOK ROAD Beside Matsqui Recreation Centre and behind Colleen and Gordie Howe Middle School. This public skatepark is 4,000 sqft with a halfpipe, tabletop, launch ramp and snake run to a 5 foot deep by 31 foot diameter bowl. Ample parking is available.

Mill Lake Park is a favourite warm weather destination for parents and their children. It is known for having “a little bit for everybody”, featuring a lake, a walking path, playgrounds, a floating boardwalk and a water spray park. Many spend the day with family and friends enjoying the large green space area, picnic tables and spray park. If you’re up for a stroll, the over 2 km path is easy for all ages. Enjoy the wildlife in and around the lake including a variety of birds, ducks, trout and turtles.
This park, named after former Matsqui resident, businessman and reeve Spud Murphy, features a water spray park, playground and walking paths. The water spray park is open May long weekend to September long weekend each year.
Centennial Outdoor Pool 2316 EMERSON ST. Enjoy this large 8 lane 25 metre outdoor competition pool from the May long weekend to Labour Day. Take advantage of public swim times throughout the summer months. Having an event? You can book birthday parties, sport celebrations and even staff parties. It’s conveniently located in the heart of Mill Lake Park with walking trails, playgrounds and the water spray park nearby.
Albert Dyck Memorial Park 31515 WALMSLEY AVE. Albert Dyck Memorial Park features a manmade lake perfect for a family day at the beach to cool down. Take a leisurely swim in the lake or play in the sand. On a hot day, get there early as the parking lot can fill up. If you want to get a bit of exercise you can enjoy the 1.6 km trail that circles the lake. Keep a look out for wildlife including blue heron, ducks and other waterfowl. The lake, home of the Fraser Valley Water Ski Club, was designed for wakeboarding and water skiing and hosts many local, provincial and national events and tournaments.

APPLEBARN – TAVES FAMILY FARMS Farming is in the blood of Abbotsford’s Taves Family, as the current operators, Loren Taves and his wife Corrine, are third-generation farmers. Located on 333 Gladwin Rd. in south Abbotsford, the farm is well regarded for its apple orchards. With 10 different apple varieties regularly grown, it’s the place to go for local versions of the popular fruit. The farm also showcases apples each September with the Applebarn Apple Festival. Plums, crab apples, sweet corn and pumpkins later in the fall are also all available to be picked.
NEUFELD FARM MARKET The Neufeld Family has been a part of the Abbotsford farming community since 1966, when they turned a dairy farm into a 45-acre raspberry farm. The family later added u-pick cucumbers and sweet corn, and then moved onto raising chickens. Their crops now include pickling cukes, pumpkins and strawberries. The market includes chicken, turkey, beef, pork, seafood and much more. The farm’s Berry Barn includes strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, cherries and other fruits like peaches, apricots, pears and plums. The market, located at 32215 King Rd., is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday.

INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Passenger counts at Abbotsford International Airport (YXX) have taken off in recent years, as carriers offer new flights to travellers both in the city, and across the Lower Mainland. Last year, 842,212 passengers passed through the airport. That figure was 20 per cent higher than 2017’s figure, which was itself a record-breaking tally. Passenger figures have now increased four consecutive years, and have risen 70 per cent from 2015. The addition of new regular flight services by WestJet, Flair Airlines and Swoop has driven those increases and turned the airport into a bustling hub of activity. WestJet has long been the busiest airline at YXX and flies daily from Abbotsford to Calgary, with a myriad of connections beyond. WestJet also operates Swoop, an ultra low-cost carrier that offers regular direct flights to Edmonton, Hamilton, and London, Ont., Flair Airlines, another low-cost carrier, has regular flights to Calgary and Edmonton. The increasing activity at the airport prompted a $5 million expansion of YXX’s terminal that doubled seating capacity,
and added two new gates and a baggage area. More work is expected over the coming year to expand a bagging and screening area. The improvements will allow the airport to more than double its passenger count before the next expansion is needed. Money for the improvements come from the airport’s own financial reserves and profits. The airport is owned by the City of Abbotsford, which bought it from the federal government for $10 more than two decades ago. In addition to serving passengers, the airport is the centre of Abbotsford’s dynamic aerospace sector, which employs hundreds of employees at several companies, including Conair and Cascade Aerospace. Each year, tens of thousands of visitors crowd the airport’s grounds for the Abbotsford International Airshow. The airport is also home to Tradex – the Fraser Valley Trade and Exhibition Centre – which has 120,000 square feet of exhibit space and frequently hosts some of the region’s largest consumer and trade events.

The 1995 Western Canada Summer Games left a lasting legacy to the community the Abbotsford Sports Hall of Fame. Located inside the Legacy Sports Centre at Abbotsford Exhibition Park, the ASHOF is a monument to local sports achievements and inducts new members each year. The Abbotsford Sports Hall of Fame Society was established by a number of civic and sports-minded individuals to acknowledge, recognize and honour local athletes, coaches and builders whose achievements have placed them at the national and international levels in their particular sports.
In addition to the permanent hall of fame, there is also a yearly Wall of Fame which recognizes junior athletes and teams, 14 to 24 years of age, that have demonstrated a high degree of accomplishment in their sport over the previous year. Individual displays highlighting the achievements of every inductee line the inside of the hall, with everything from jerseys to equipment to newspaper articles found inside glass cases showing off each inductee’s story. Inductees were first named to the ASHOF in 2003, and cover every sport from hockey to rope skipping to gymnastics to wrestling. The ASHOF is open every Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. and admission is free.

COMING TO ABBOTSFORD
A Christmas event that often gets glowing reviews is coming to Abbotsford. The Glow Gardens event, formerly in Langley’s Darvonda Gardens, is the world’s largest indoor Christmas festival, and organizers announced in April that it would be expanding into two new locations – one in Abbotsford and another in Vancouver.
The theme for Glow Abbotsford this year is “Santa’s sleigh adventure,” and guests will help Santa and his elves find his reindeer as they explore new ways to deliver presents, using hot air balloons, planes, trains, motorcycles and more.
Tradex will be hosting Abbotsford’s event, which came about after an Agricultural Land Commission ruling forced it out of Langley’s location.
All of that will encompass nearly 90,000 square feet, using over one million lights as part of the many displays throughout the event.
Last year’s Glow event saw about 120,000 people check out the festivities in Langley, an exciting prospect for Tourism Abbotsford executive director Craig Nicols.
Also included in the festival are playgrounds, licensed bars, live music and holiday markets.
“We are thrilled that Glow Gardens will be bringing their event to Abbotsford this winter,” he said. “The team at Tradex and Tourism Abbotsford look forward to working with Lawrence and the rest of the Glow team as they prepare to make Tradex their home this December. This event is a great opportunity to showcase our community; it will be fun to welcome thousands of visitors to Abbotsford and to Tradex throughout the holiday season.”
The event will be running from Dec. 5, 2019 to Jan. 4, 2020. Vancouver’s event will be held in the Harbour Convention Centre downtown, while the expansion also branches the event out to nine more cities, including Edmonton, Halifax, Ottawa, Saskatoon, Pittsburgh, Seattle and Odense, Denmark. “The city with the big back yard”. The District of Mission is nestled on a southern coastal mountain slope, overlooking the lush valley of the mighty Fraser River.
