A DAY AT THE BEACH

There are many reasons to head for Harrison Lake as there are grains of sand on the beach. If a bustling waterfront is your fancy, spend your time in Harrison Hot Springs’ downtown core. Or, head down Rockwell Drive and travel the lake’s peaceful eastern shoreline. Take the time to visit quiet beachfronts or rest in the soothing spray of a waterfall. If you like, stay outdoors a little longer with a camping trip to either Hicks Lake or Deer Lake, both of which have their own picturesque views and trail systems.
A DAY OF SHOPPING Think you need to travel to the big city for shopping? Think again. On close inspection, you’ll find that our small communities have almost everything you’ll need, from boutique gift shops and vintage stores to the homegrown businesses that dot the countryside.

Get to know the surrounding countryside with the Circle Farm Tour. This tour is a collective of farms in the Fraser Valley, including Agassiz and Harrison Mills, each showcasing a unique agricultural heritage. B.C.’s oldest existing wooden railway station is ready to welcome you to the history of the Agassiz-Harrison Valley. Now housing the Agassiz-Harrison Museum and Visitor Information Centre, the building will give you an opportunity to explore many facets of the area’s heritage and possibly dive into your own family history. Admission is by donation, and the museum is open from May to October. A DAY ON THE ROAD For one weekend in July, Agassiz’s roads become a destination for bicyclists looking to explore local agriculture. The Agassiz Cycle Farm Tour heads out this year on July 20; cyclists can check in, grab a map and make their way to locations around the District of Kent that grow, bake and cook different local foods, from blueberries to free-range chicken. A DAY WITH THE FAMILY Nothing beats the laughter of children, and you’ll hear plenty of that in the community. A DAY TO CELEBRATE There’s lots to celebrate in Agassiz during the summer and fall, but don’t forget that winter has its joys too. From the Community Carol Concert to Lights by the Lake, both Agassiz and Harrison celebrate holiday cheer in a big way. Agassiz’s railway is one of the stops for the annual CP Holliday Train, which winds its way through six provinces and seven states around Christmas, collecting for local food banks on its journey. DISCOVER HERITAGE AT THE AGASSIZ-HARRISON MUSEUM
HISTORY
The Agassiz-Harrison Museum and Visitor Information Centre’s connection to Agassiz’s past is rooted in the building’s foundation. In 1893, the museum was the community’s original Canadian Pacific Rail station, bringing visitors into Agassiz. In the 1970s, however, CP began to tear down its old stations. In an effort to save the historic building, the Agassiz-Harrison Historical Society purchased it for $1 and the District of Kent moved it to a new home at the Agassiz Research Station. When the district took ownership of what is now Pioneer Park in 2003, they decided to bring the rail station back to its original location for everyone to enjoy. Now, the museum’s society owns and manages the centre, offering tourist information, a gift shop and local history on everything from championship ploughing and the area’s first doctors to the 1948 flood and the history of transportation. The museum has been running strong for more than three decades, and is open to the public from May until October. UNCOVER LOCAL FOLKLORE AT KILBY Imagine a place where you can tiptoe back in time, throw on a pair of gumboots and learn some history while getting your hands dirty. At the timeless Kilby Historic site, guests can experience life as it was in the early 1900s. Operated by the Fraser Heritage Society, the heritage site features the oldest building in the District of Kent as well as the infamously haunted Manchester House Hotel. Kilby’s friendly staff and volunteers are on hand for tours or to assist visitors in getting acquainted with the site’s local farm animals. In addition to its summer-long offerings, Kilby also hosts a number of special events throughout the year. The weekend Plein Air Festival, held in August this year, brings in artists from all around while the kid-oriented Pioneer Days gives little ones a chance to learn about how things used to be. HARRISON HOT SPRINGS WATER PARK Need a place to cool off an a hot summer day? The Harrison Hot Springs Water Park is a floating park on Harrison Lake that includes a number of water slides, swings and even a teeter-totter. The park is operated by Harrison Watersports, who also offer Seadoo rentals, bumper boats and more.
BRIDAL VEIL FALLS Cascading down 60 metres, Bridal Veil Falls is one of the areas most famous natural attractions. The short walk offers stunning views of the provincial park and, of course, the falls themselves. Located off Exit 135 from Highway 1, the park is open from May until October.
AGASSIZ SPEEDWAY Get your engines revved and your race flags ready to go. The hottest ticket in town is for an unpretentious race track on 5045 Cemetery Road which boasts fast races and even better events. THE OLD CEMETERY Nowhere else in Agassiz will you get a better sense of the town’s history than at the Old Cemetery. Located off Limbert Road in Agassiz, the cemetery climbs up the side of one of the local mountains. The steps up, although steep, offer a glimpse into Agassiz’s past. And when you finally reach the top, you can stand next to the grave of the Agassiz family, and look over the community they helped found.
AGASSIZ STREET MEET Got a love for classic cars? Agassiz’s annual Street Meet might be the place for you. Organized by the Agassiz-Harrison Lion’s Club, the car show displays some of the community’s best antique, collector, modified and restored cars and trucks. Usually taking place in Pioneer Park each July each year, the Street Meet is a great place to enjoy the camaraderie and entertainment of a small town. DISCOVER YOUR OWN BACKYARD

PARKS & RECREATION There’s no excuse for sitting around inside when there’s so much to enjoy out here. The community of Agassiz offers plenty of options to be active and healthy in the great outdoors. From natural parks to organized classes, there’s something for everyone to discover in this amazing community. CENTENNIAL PARK
PIONEER PARK Perhaps the most iconic of Agassiz’s parks, Pioneer Park takes up the majority of Pioneer Avenue’s north side in the community’s downtown strip. For those with a love for trees, there are several large specimens to sit under and enjoy, including a dutch elm, a red oak and an Akebono cherry tree. Featuring a gazebo, picnic areas, and an oversized chess and checkers board, as well as an accessible playground and the only 5210 playbox in the community, the park brings the joy of outdoor play into the heart of Agassiz’s downtown.
Featuring a skate park, playground, soccer pitches, baseball fields, a walking trail and now outdoor fitness equipment, Centennial Park is a great place for families to experience a little outdoor adventure. Want to take you pup out for an adventure of their own? Centennial Park also has its own off-leash dog park so Fido can enjoy the freedom of the park too.

Located in the heart of Agassiz’s most dense residential neighbourhood, Schep Park lets families extend their backyard into the community. The park, on Elm Road, features a playground designed for young kids between the ages of two and five, a large grassy field and an outdoor basketball for a quick game of hoops.
FERNY COOMBE POOL Need to cool down this summer? Take a dip in Agassiz’s outdoor pool. The Ferny Coombe Pool operates from May to September at 6280 Pioneer Avenue, and is home to public swims as well as special events like aquatic story time in the pool with the Agassiz Library. LOCAL GRINDS Want to get out into nature? Try out on of the community’s trails. The Agassiz Green Grind, located off Lougheed Highway as it merges with Haig Highway, lets trail runners and walkers travel up the side of a local mountain to enjoy views of the community. The Harrison Grind, also known as the Campbell Lake Trail, is a more difficult climb that begins off Hot Springs Road by Balsam Avenue, but offers spectacular views of Harrison Lake. As with all trail blazing, be aware of wildlife in the area and always tell someone before you head out on your adventure. DISCOVER YOUR OWN BACKYARD
FISHING This area is known as a sport fishing haven, with tourists coming from all over the world to test our waters. Sport fishers are looking for the Chinook, Coho, Chum, Sockeye and Pink Salmon that migrate through the region year after year. The possibility of catching a migrating salmon on the Fraser River is high, as it’s the main channel on their journey to spawning grounds. Meanwhile, the Harrison Lake has easy boat access for both novice and experienced fishers.

Sturgeon caught on the Fraser River on May 13. It was 8 feet and 8” long, weighed 400 lbs and is estimated to be 80 years old. The legendary sturgeon, the largest fresh water fish on the continent, is the main prize out here. Sturgeon fishing is catch and release only, and the fish are monitored by local guides with the help of the Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society.
• Sturgeon can live for over 150 years • The largest recorded sturgeon caught on the Fraser River was 1,100 pounds and 12 feet long • 2019 sees the return of Pinks & Chinook. Pinks are great for family fishing

ARTS SCENE HARRISON FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS
quality of life within the local community.
The Harrison Festival of the Arts is unique, not only in this part of the Fraser Valley, but in Canada. With its musical variety, its cultural diversity and its setting in one of the most breathtaking towns in the country, it is an inspiring event that envelops all the senses.
Each month a different artist or group of artists is featured in the Ranger Station Art Gallery. This June will feature the work of current Artist in Residence Aileen Penner; in July, a show of First Nation artists will be presented as part of the Harrison Festival of the Arts; and in August, fabric artist Mallory Donen’s show ‘I Come From a Long Line of Machines’ will be open in the Gallery.
Visual arts, theatre, literature and children’s activities round out the range of arts experiences that will be on offer from July 12-21, as we present artists on our beach stage and in the hall from as far away as Korea and Cape Verde, and from as close to home as right here in the Fraser Valley. KENT HARRISON ARTS COUNCIL For the past 46 years, the Arts Council has been committed to creating a community that supports and values artists, where exposure to the arts stimulates imagination and creative expression, and where the arts improve the overall quality of daily life. Through the operation of the Ranger Station Art Gallery on Rockwell Drive in Harrison Hot Springs, the presentation of many workshops for individuals of all ages and the administration of the nationally acclaimed Artist (or Writer) in Residence program, the Arts Council is continually trying to enhance the

CHEAM VISTA CLASSICAL CONCERT SOCIETY The Cheam Vista Classical Concert Society was founded in the fall of 2016, and flourished in a very short period of time. A great number of people no longer need to sacrifice the time, cost and travel of enjoying concerts of similar caliber in the Vancouver area. Each year we seek to include a broad range of performers. Season 2020 will see the Atlantic String Machine, the Elmer Iseler Singers, Kirbogen Trio (piano, cello, clarinet), and Ritchey-Hahn Duet (harp, flute). The venue for our concerts, the Agassiz Christian Reformed Church, has wonderful acoustics and comfortable seating. Attendees must purchase an annual membership at our local library.
