Welcome CARVERS & VISITORS! Don Daniels, President, Shoreline Arts Society The chainsaw carving spirit is alive and well in Campbell River. Beginning on the morning of Wednesday, June 19 at 7 a.m. through to Sunday, June 23, you will see the cedar and fir logs transform to works of art at Frank James Park in Willow Point. The event is organized by a dedicated team of directors who spend many hours preparing grant applications and seeking donations and sponsors in order to keep operating as a non-profit society. The carvings you see around the city are not for sale. A donation of $1,000 entitles sponsors to a place on the list of carvings that are distributed later in the year. All money raised goes toward expenses to keep this event free for both the residents of Campbell River and visitors that come and see the carvings in the park all summer long. Since this event is a competition, carvers are not paid to come to Campbell River. Each carver pays a small registration fee. There are 21 carvers confirmed this year up from 17 from 2018 and new carvers will be on site carving up their art work. Over the past years we have seen novice carvers develop their talents in Campbell River, advance their skills and receive commissions around the country. Logs are donated by Western Forest Products and Timber West and transported to Frank James Park by John Ellis Pacific Wood Waste and Ken and Brandon Fear from Fearless Trucking, then when the carvers have
done their thing the wood waste/sawdust is removed from the park by Burt Campbell at Contain-A-Way. Out of town carvers enjoy donated rooms from the hospitality industry and this year room accommodations are supplied by Anchor Inn, Big Rock Motel, Friendship Inn, Harbourside Inn, Heritage River Inn, Heron’s Landing, Ocean Resort, Painter’s Lodge, and Passage View Motel. Lunch is supplied all week from the various food suppliers that include Beachwood Corner Cafe, Berwick by the Sea, Boston Pizza, Daves’ Bakery, Lee’s Chicken, Papa Murphy’s, Serious Coffee, Steiner’s Bakery, Subway, and Willows Market. Shoreline Arts Society depends on the City of Campbell River and Provincial cash grants to continue operating as a non-profit society to keep this a free event for residents of Campbell River and visitors. A number of local companies donate equipment and help us with the event set up. We have an army of volunteers who help us at the park during carving week and their work is certainly recognized. Willow Point is a great place to walk around, support the various businesses and see us at the park from Wednesday, June 19 through to the ceremonies and presentations on the afternoon of Sunday, June 23. Come down all week to see the logs in transformation and purchase a raffle ticket for a chance to win a carving or one of the great prizes donated by our sponsors.

Does Frank James Park look a little bare right now?
The logs will be arriving shortly, and the park will transform as we get ready for the 23rd Annual Shoreline Arts Chainsaw Carving Competition. On Monday and Tuesday the logs will be placed into position and the crew will start putting up the tents and the fencing. The carvers will pick their logs on Tuesday evening and then everyone will attend a very important safety meeting. We review their gear, talk about scaffolding and review the safe operation of chainsaws. For insurance purposes, we strictly limit the number of people who are allowed inside the orange fencing with the carvers, and absolutely no children will be allowed inside during the carving hours. The two fellows who are in charge of the Park, John and Bill have worked extensively over the years to ensure that our event goes smoothly. Again this year Bill and John "Octy" by Max Chickite. The carving that started it all.

Every year, we have more sponsors than carvings. A minimum donation of $1,000 gives you an excellent chance of getting one of the carvings.
Who benefits from the competition?
Our competition is an opportunity for carvers to get together and share their craft. Novices can mix with our professional consultants and receive guidance on technique as well as safety tips. Local carvers get to meet carvers from different areas, and share ideas. Local businesses benefit from increased tourism. While donations feed our carvers at the park, visitors help the economy by dining locally and using hotels, motels and camp sites.While Duncan is the City of Totems, and Chemainus has murals, Campbell River has carvings. Back when the competition started, carvings were worth about $300 each, nowadays, they would fetch prices closer to $8,000.
How is the competition funded?
Traditionally, our donors and sponsors have been very generous. Our local forest industry companies donate the logs which are valued at about $75,000 in today’s dollars. Accommodation for out-of-town carvers is worth roughly $10,000, and moving the carvings safely with the right equipment would cost at least $10,000. We receive in-kind donations of scaffolding, a generator for power, use of a fork lift plus reduced fees for first aid. Our operating budget is made up of $12,000 from a provincial gaming grant, $7,500 from the
Carving Maintenance
The carvings are loaned to major sponsors and are positioned around the City and area so that everyone can enjoy them. They remain the property of the Shoreline Arts Society and we are responsible for their maintenance. Talking to some of our carvers it was determined that several of them preferred that their carvings be allowed to go back to nature rather than stained every so often. This is a good thing because sometimes the wood rots or cracks so badly that the carving cannot be repaired.
How do we allocate the new carvings? The raffle winner gets first choice of the available carvings, and then the carvings are chosen by sponsors in order of the value of their donations. Each sponsor chooses three carvings, and the Society determines which carving goes where. That decision is based on vv

In order to actually stain an older carving. we need a couple of weeks of hot sun, enough volunteer time to actually do the staining (after removing algae, patching and sanding) and then two more weeks of dry weather. It takes a village Western Forest Products and TimberWest donate the wood, and then logs are hauled to the site by Pacific Wood Waste and Fearless Trucking. They are moved into place using a forklift from C&L Supply. The carvers are provided with morning coffee, muffins, lunch, healthy snacks in the afternoon and water
throughout the day. First Aid is on standby, and the site is secured overnight. Local businesses supply, donate, or give us a break on safety equipment, scaffolding, stain, and the rent for portable washrooms and we rely on grants from the Province of BC and the City, as well as cash donations from local businesses, banks, and the Willow Point BIA. We use donated prizes for our fundraising raffle and encourage everyone to buy one. Contain-A-Way lends us dumpsters for excess wood and sawdust as well as the garbage that any large event produces. We recycle as much as possible. In September, carvings are delivered to their new homes, and Econo Ezy Box Storage looks after our equipment and supplies year round. Of course we couldn’t pull this off without an army of volunteers – especially the Sawdusters who haul away the chunks of wood and bits that don’t belong.
