Can’t wait to get to Langford? We can’t wait to welcome you, so don’t waste any time getting lost along the way. But be warned, once you find your way here, you may not want to leave…

AIRPORTS The closest major airport is Victoria International, just 33 kilometres (20 miles) north of Langford. Once you land, the quickest way to travel is by highway – travel south on the Patricia Bay Highway until Exit 7 Nanaimo/Sooke and veer right onto McKenzie Avenue. From McKenzie Avenue, turn right onto the Trans-Canada Highway 1 until Exit 14 Langford. Remember to stay on the left side of the fork which will loop around onto Millstream Avenue/Veterans Memorial Parkway. Travel south until Goldstream Avenue then turn right into downtown Langford.

HIGHWAYS If you’re travelling from mid or north Vancouver Island, follow the Trans-Canada Highway 1 south. Highway 1 runs from downtown Victoria to Nanaimo and travels through the urban south Island region and the gorgeous Cowichan Valley. It also travels right through the City of Langford with the city centre south of the highway and Millstream Village to the north.

Pizza, Pasta

...and so much more!

You can also catch a seaplane, landing in Victoria’s Inner Harbour. There are several options out of town, all of which will lead you to the Trans-Canada and follow the same instructions as above.

FERRIES Langford is located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island so one of the most popular ways to travel here is from the mainland. B.C. Ferries’ Swartz Bay terminal is just 37.5 kilometres (23 miles) north of Langford and can be accessed from the same highway system as the airport as the ferry terminal exits directly onto the Patricia Bay Highway.

LANGFORD

PFC Home to some of Canada’s biggest sports names and a number of national teams, Langford is a destination to watch some of the best teams duke it out against their rivals. The two premium-grade artificial turf fields at City Centre Park are built to IRD and FIFA two-star rated specifications. Westhills Stadium — home to Rugby Canada, the Westshore Rebels football team and the new Canadian Premier League’s Pacific FC — has full stadium seating that will accommodate 6,000 spectators, nine suites and concession with liquor service. Meanwhile, Bear Mountain is home to great tennis, mountain biking and a golf resort unlike any other in Canada.

PACIFIC FC The Pacific Football Club is a division of the brand new Canadian Premier League and has brought professional men’s soccer to Langford. Based out of Westhills Stadium, the team played its inaugural season in 2019 and lit up the field in purple and blue, taking on its opponents. The home opener in April 2019, saw a sold-out crowd and the team’s first win as it made Canadian soccer history. The games are for all ages with a family zone, food trucks and a beer garden.

So Much to Do!

RUGBY CANADA Canada’s top rugby athletes have settled into their routine of training on the turf fields at City Centre Park. They start their mornings with a scrum and hit the Eagle Ridge gym for an afternoon workout. Rugby Canada also officially opened the brand new Al Charron Training Centre in 2018, the single-largest investment ever made by Rugby Canada in its pursuit of growing the sport in Canada. Canada’s international rugby teams have achieved unprecedented success. The senior women’s team claimed a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the men’s team claimed its first ever HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series cup title at the 2017 Singapore Sevens.

TENNIS CANADA/TENNIS BC Near the North Langford Recreation Centre and at the foot of Mount Finlayson is a new tennis facility supported by Tennis Canada and Tennis BC. Located within the District of Highlands, the facility is easily accessible via Bear Mountain parkway and is expected to be one of the largest in Canada. It offers up eight red clay courts and a recently opened four-court indoor facility. Tennis Canada and Tennis BC are working to develop the sport, enhance an active tennis community and inspire players to enjoy all levels of play. It will be a future host site for Island, provincial, national and international events, training camps and coaching conferences, with a professional staff and a welcome environment.

The Westshore Rebels football team officially made its move to Langford’s Westhills Stadium in 2011. The club has been around since the late 1960s under various names but became the Westshore Rebels to commemorate its new home. The team, which is part of the Canadian Junior Football League and plays in the B.C. Football Conference, has award-winning coaches and players. The Westshore Rebels have also been recognized for their sportsmanship and involvement in the community and are committed to the development of amateur football and community development across Vancouver Island.

Langford’s Bear Mountain Resort is home to the Canadian National Mountain Bike team and includes a training centre, dirt jump park and bike trails. With its intermediate to advanced west coast single track, sweeping flow lines and scenic climbs, Bear Mountain serves as year-round training grounds for Cycling Canada and has been host to the Canada Cup Series for mountain biking. The weather, technical terrain and training environment on Bear Mountain is perfect for Canada’s riders to prepare themselves to compete on the international stage.

ARTS

ARTS

LANGFORD SUPPORTS THE ARTS With the population of Langford growing, so too is the appetite within the community to celebrate the arts. The City of Langford supports arts in various ways. Annually, the City helps fund the West Shore Arts Council, which is the lead advocate for public understanding of, participation in and appreciation of arts, culture and heritage. The council puts on a number of events throughout the year to highlights the arts, including Light Up the Hills. As part of the annual event held after dark, residents use handmade lanterns and walk along the pathway from Belmont Secondary school to the Westhills playground. Along the way, there are illuminated art installations of various art forms. Langford is also a big supporter of the Coast Collective Gallery and Arts Centre, which opened its new space in January 2016 and has drawn thousands of visitors to discover and enjoy the arts on the West Shore. It is a dynamic, inspiring centre promoting art and culture, connecting community members of all ages through creative expression and explorations. Gallery exhibits bring the works of talented emerging and established Canadian artists and artisans to the public at an accessible location. An Artisan Gift Shop showcases juried handmade works that celebrate the artistry and craftsmanship of southern Vancouver Island. Exceptional, innovative, international-calibre instructors encourage the pursuit of excellence and fun for artists of all ages and abilities.

SECRET PLACES

DISCOVER TWO HIDDEN GEMS

With its breath-taking views, the opportunities are endless for outdoor enthusiasts in Langford. But two spots that often go unnoticed by visitors are the Goldstream Trestle Bridge and little Niagara Falls.

While not quite as splendid, there is also Goldstream Falls, a smaller waterfall located in the southwest corner of the park near the campground.

Located in the heart of Goldstream Provincial Park, Niagara Falls and the trestle are often missed as residents and visitors flock to the north side of the park for salmon spawning, hiking and the nature house.

Once you’ve snapped enough shots of Niagara Falls, head up the trail to the Goldstream Trestle Bridge. Don’t worry, the steep climb is well worth the view at the top. Nestled in the tree tops overlooking the park, this hike is not for the faint of heart, or anyone afraid of heights.

But hidden just off the highway on the south side, a short walk from the parking lot, is little Niagara Falls, a 47.5-metre-high waterfall that is particularly spectacular during the spring and fall months.

While this railway line was not active at the time of publishing, maintenance crews do travel on the tracks and visitors are asked to use extreme caution while on the bridge as it may be slippery.

LANGFORD

FAMILY PARKS FIND FUN IN LANGFORD CITY CENTRE PARK City Centre Park redefines what a traditional civic park looks like. It is Langford’s “everything” and is a go-to place for active entertainment and recreation.

facility welcoming bowlers of all ages as well as league players.

CENTENNIAL PARK

The Eagle Ridge Community Centre’s arena plays host to roller and ball hockey leagues while lacrosse teams duke it out on the dry floor.

Halfway between Langford’s downtown core and Langford Lake is one of Langford’s new water parks, Centennial Park. It’s the perfect place for families to gather, watch a baseball game or try out the Explorer Dome.

Westhills Arena, which is next door, is a fullsize indoor ice arena featuring an ice river leading to an outdoor skating rink in the winter. The arena’s ice is great for hockey, figure skating and recreational use.

With four improved ball diamonds, two upgraded tennis courts and a washroom/ concession building, the park keeps adults happy and entertains kids with two playgrounds and a water park.

In the summer, the Splash Park is the best place to cool off and beat the heat.

The playground and picnic tables are specially surfaced to accommodate children with physical challenges.

The Family Fun Park is great fun for kids and adults with an 18-hole mini-golf course featuring pirates, Aztec ruins and buried treasure. The gold mine-themed PlayZone is a hit with the kids, giving them a space to run, crawl and slide while parents can relax on the leather couches with a coffee and magazines in the parents section. Westhills Stadium with a premium-grade artificial turf field, is built to IRD and FIFA two-star rated specifications. It has full stadium seating that will accommodate 6,000 spectators, nine suites and concession with liquor service. Next to the stadium is Goudy Field, a second full-size artificial turf field. Langford Lanes is Victoria’s only 10-pin bowling alley and is a state-of-the-art

ED FISHER MEMORIAL FIELD Ed Fisher Memorial Field is one of Langford’s best all-purpose fields. It is one of the largest public spaces in the Happy Valley neighbourhood and hosts all kinds of sports with a full field for soccer, football or rugby, and a minor baseball diamond.

Kids can scramble over the jungle-gym and excavator while watching their older siblings run bases or shoot hoops on the basketball court. Permanent bleachers behind the diamond serve as the perfect spot for parents to watch their little ones. A concession/washroom facility stands in the centre of the park with parking and picnic facilities also available.

SARAH BECKETT MEMORIAL PLAYGROUND Built to honour West Shore RCMP Constable Sarah Beckett, the new playground will have two sections — one with equipment for two to five-year-olds and other for five to 12-year-olds. The playground is set to open on Aug. 24, 2019 and will coincide with the grand opening of the new Westhills Stadium located next door.

Youngsters can stay entertained with a playground and swings at one end of the field. Ample parking, picnic tables, a public washroom and bleachers make this park family and spectator-friendly.

A.T. (TOM) GORDON MEM. PARK The A.T. (Tom) Gordon Memorial Park was built with Langford’s little leaguers in mind with a baseball diamond sized for little league baseball teams.

NATURE PARKS Goldstream Estuary Photo by Dunc Malcolm

WHERE NATURE ABOUNDS MINUTES FROM DOWNTOWN GOLDSTREAM PROVINCIAL PARK Waterfalls, old-growth forest and the opportunity to commune with Mother Nature draw thousands of visitors annually to Goldstream Provincial Park, located just minutes from Langford’s downtown core. Mount Finlayson offers spectacular views of the region, while the park’s trail system highlights the park’s diverse wildlife and ecosystems. The spawning of salmon from midOctober to December attracts visitors from around the world. The Freeman King Visitor Centre in the heart of the park is staffed by park naturalists happy to answer questions. They host interpretive programs and informative lectures throughout the year. A large picnic area with shelters and washrooms make Goldstream Provincial Park the perfect place for a family gathering. There’s a great selection of campsites, and a concession is in operation during the summer.

LANGFORD LAKE The city’s largest of several beautiful lakes is accessible from a number of convenient locations. Langford Lake’s boat launch on its western shore makes a variety of activities such as fishing, kayaking, boating and canoeing available throughout the year. A user-friendly system of trails and boardwalks enable visitors to stroll around the lake and take advantage of scenic views that feature a variety of water fowl, birds and turtles. Langford Lake’s

collection of beaches are the perfect place to cool off with a swim during the summer. Parking is available at a number of locations, including at the start of the Ed Nixon Trail near the Trans-Canada Highway and at nearby City Centre Park.

GLEN LAKE Nestled at the tip of the growing Happy Valley neighbourhood in the southern part of Langford, Glen Lake is the perfect place for boating, fishing and swimming. You can take a dip at the beach at Glen Cove or at Glen Lake Beach Park, which has a boat launch, spray park, children’s playground, washrooms, an exercise area and picnic areas shaded by giant willows and Douglas firs.

FLORENCE LAKE The opportunity to swim, fish or simply enjoy amazing views draw residents and visitors throughout all four seasons to Florence Lake, one of Langford’s precious natural jewels. The two boardwalks are great spots to cast a line, and a boat launch on the northern shore provides easy access for boaters. The two viewing platforms that provide panoramic views of the lake are wheelchair accessible. The changing colours of an array of trees makes views of Florence Lake a must during the autumn months. All of Langford’s parks are dog friendly all year long.

Langford Fire Rescue Station No. 2. It is one of the few City of Langford trails that intersect the Galloping Goose Trail. The E & N Rail Trail is the Capital Region’s newest pedestrian and bicycle thoroughfare. Following the existing E & N Rail corridor, the trail stretches from Esquimalt to the pedestrian oriented green heart of Langford. It cuts through Langford’s downtown core and the Westhills development, into the beautiful greenery of CRD Humpback Reservoir where it will eventually connect with the proposed Trans-Canada Trail. The E & N connects to the Galloping Goose Trail at several points along its path to the Humpback Reservoir in western Langford. Like the Galloping Goose, the E & N moves through urban, rural and wilderness settings. Some portions of the trail are multi-use bike and pedestrian paths.

Lake access is easy along the northeast arm of the Strachan Trail. Off Springboard Place, the trail runs through lush vegetation full of song birds and small animals and provides a panoramic view of Florence Lake.
