asweage There is always something going on at Mission’s Chartwell Cedarbrooke Retirement Residence. Staff and residents are preparing to celebrate Cedarbrooke’s 10th anniversary in August. A full day of activities is being planned, but before that, a special Seniors’ Week event is set to take place on June 4. Cedarbrooke will celebrate with Elvis from noon to 3 p.m. and everyone is invited to come.

Moments and wishes could be fulfilled

Programs at Chartwell Cedarbrooke help create special days for seniors Who doesn’t like a special outing or surprise gift?

In an effort to promote the philosophy of “making people’s

lives better,” Chartwell Cedarbrooke retirement residence has been running a program called Moments That Matter.

Twice each month, staff at Cedarbrooke do something special

to brighten a resident’s day.

Vicky Ross, lifestyles and program manager at Chartwell Cedarbrooke, said these moments can be big or small.

“The program is for

residents in our homes who submit their wishes.”

Ross said there is a box in the lobby where ideas and suggestion can be submitted, by anyone – staff or residents.

“They went to the area the one woman used to live in and had ice cream and reminisced about what it was like to live in that community years ago,” Ross said.

Another moment was as simple as a request to eat a taco.

“This resident doesn’t get out much so we arranged with our chef to bring her up some tacos.”

Others asked for a trip to Dairy Queen for ice cream.

“It’s those smaller moments – maybe a favourite restaurant an outing or a place they used to visit.”

Some residents requested a group outing to Harrison Resort, and staff made it happen.

“A moment can really be anything that means something special, just to make a resident’s day brighter. One resident, her husband would always leave a box of chocolates for Valentine’s Day so I arranged that she would have a box of chocolates left on her pillow,” Ross said.

Blueberry Crumble Cake

CakE 1-1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup white sugar 1/2 tablespoon baking powder Pinch salt 1/2 cup melted butter

1/2 cup brown sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2/3 cup milk 1-1/2 cup frozen or fresh blueberries

CRumblE 1/2 cup rolled oats 1/2 cup brown

1/3 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup melted butter

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350 ºF (175 ºC). Line a 9-inch square cake pan with parchment paper.

2. In a medium bowl, combine the dry crumble ingredients and then add the butter.

Mix and set aside.

3. In another bowl, combine flour, white sugar, baking powder and salt.

4. In a third bowl, cream the butter and brown sugar. Gradually mix in the vanilla, eggs and milk until smooth.

5. Add a third of the flour mixture at a time, gradually combining the ingredients until you have a uniform batter. Add the blueberries and stir.

6. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and top with the crumble.

7. Bake for about 1 hour, or until a tooth pick inserted in the middle of the cake comes out dry.

8. Serve as is or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Test your bowling skills Lawn Bowling Club hosts open house on June 4 One of the events featured during Seniors’ Week is an open house at the Mission Lawn Bowling Club (7560 Hurd St.).

On Tuesday, June 4, from 10 a.m. to noon, the club welcomes

any and all to come try carpet bowling.

Members will provide a lesson and serve refreshments.

The Mission club only bowls inside on the carpets, because the summer heat is too

much for many of the seniors and the cost of keeping up the greens is too much for the club’s budget. Mission Parks and Recreation has been very helpful in keeping the club’s grass field cut, orga-

nizers say.

Carpet bowling is great fun for anyone, but seniors, especially, love to bowl. The sport is similar to bocce and curling.

The group has lots of fun – keeping score for the eight ends and then erasing the board. After a break for coffee and socialization, they play a second game.

The club is excited about the new seniors’ facility being built over the next two years and plan to take carpet bowling over to the new building so that many more of Mission’s active seniors can get involved in this sport.

Organizers welcome all to join them at any time. Members bowl four afternoons a week, Tuesday to Friday at 1 p.m.

There are over 100 different types of arthritis affecting all races, genders, and ages, caused by various mechanisms, but the most common type of arthritis affecting many adults is osteoarthritis. It causes long-term disability in adults due to pain and altered joint function.

WHAT IS OSTEOARTHRITIS? The place where 2 bones meet is normally covered with a rubbery material called cartilage.

It was previously thought to be due to simply “wear and tear” of the joint cartilage, but it is now known that it is much more complex than that. The term osteoarthritis has “itis” which means in ammation. There is in ammation of the joints which is followed by loss of the articular cartilage and abnormal bone formation which causes the symptoms.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? Symptoms are gradual and take months to years to develop.

• Initially, people usually get minimal morning stiffness in the affected joints.

• As the disease progresses, it is followed by stiffness and pain in the joints with activity.

• There is usually bony enlargement, crepitus with movement and limitation of motion.

Almost any joint can be involved but it most commonly affects the hands, knees, hips and spine.

WHO IS AT RISK OF GETTING OSTEOARTHRITIS? There are multiple risk factors that may cause osteoarthritis. These are: • Previous injury to the joint • Repeated stress on the joint • Overweight • Family history • Older age WHAT CAN I DO TO IMPROVE THE SYMPTOMS? Some steps you can do to prevent symptoms from getting worse are: • Rest for several minutes when your pain is at the worst.

• Lose weight (if you are overweight) • Physical therapy and exercise to strengthen the muscles • Use shoe inserts, splints, canes, etc. to help your joints with stability WHY IS EXERCISING BENEFICIAL IN OSTEOARTHRITIS? Many people with arthritis do not exercise often because of joint pain or weakness, but it can be broken down into two to four 10-minute sessions per day to avoid too much discomfort.

• Moving your joints everyday through a full range of motion can maintain exibility and slow deterioration of cartilage. If your knees are affected, bend and extend them as far as you comfortably can.

• Strengthening exercises can be helpful as strong muscles help protect the painful joints and maintain balance, thus preventing falls.

• Low impact activities such as biking, swimming and tai chi are very helpful.

HOW CAN I PROTECT MY JOINTS WHILE EXERCISING? • Walk on at, level surfaces.

• Wear supportive footwear such as athletic shoes with good cushioning to reduce impact on your hips and knees.

• Listen to your body and never ignore pain. A sign that you have exercised too much is that your joint hurts longer than 2 hours.

• Pay attention to posture and alignment WHAT TREATMENT OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE? As there is no cure for osteoarthritis, the treatment goals are to: reduce pain, aintain joint mobility, and limit functional disability. Some options include: • Some medicines help reduce the pain and some help reduce the swelling.

These include pills, creams and gels that you can put on your skin to reduce pain. There are steroid injections you can get in your joints to help with pain as well.

• There is no strong evidence that any supplements help with the arthritis, including glucosamine and chondroitin.

• When other treatment options are not helping, some people benefit from getting a surgery such as getting a surgery to replace a knee or a hip.

Mission’s Lifetime Learning Centre hosted its 17th annual Walkathon and Wellness Fair last month. The event was a huge success, as more than 150 walkers of all ages took part.

Participants at the walkathon included the Lifetime Learning Fitness and Osteo groups; Fraserview Learning Centre students and teachers; Summit Learning Centre students, parents and teachers; and West Heights Grades 2,3, 4 and 5 students and teachers.

The event also began the 150minute-a-week fitness challenge that ties into the ParticipACMore than 150 people took part in the 17th annual Walkathon and Wellness Fair put on by Mission’s Lifetime TION contest, which is going Organizers call this year’s event a big success.

How to preserve fresh berries While having an abundance of fruit on hand is a happy problem to have, keeping your berries from going bad does present a challenge. Here are four great ways to preserve them.

1. Make jam. To turn your berries into jam, all you need is a pot, your fruits, some sugar and pectin.

Make certain you properly seal your jars to ensure the jam’s safe to eat for up to a year. Homemade jams are perfect for spreading on toast or slathering over a bowl of ice cream.

2. Dehydrate them. Turn your oven into a dehydrator. Place berries on a baking sheet on the middle rack, and set your oven to the lowest heat possible. In a few hours, you’ll have dried berries to snack on, mix into trail mix or even bake with.

4. Freeze them. Having frozen berries on hand is great for making smoothies, oatmeal and baked goods all year round.
