A new recipe for Food Bank future

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com The circle of food bank executive members, volunteers, cheque writers and well-wishers gathered to officially celebrate the start of construction on a new facility for the Columbia Valley Food Bank (CVFB) last week.

The small but enthusiastic crowd was brimming with excitement as they clustered around the soon-to-be broken ground behind the Summit Youth Hub. The grass was green for a few short minutes following the official sod turning, then actual construction work got underway as the digger eagerly clawed at the ground for the foundation of the new facility.

The current food bank, located in the basement of the Summit Youth Hub, is no more than 700 square feet total. Thanks to the generosity of Valley residents, it is regularly well-stocked; the downside is there is simply nowhere to put it all. Food bank volunteers creatively stack, store, and stash food. There is only one entrance to the facility down a concrete flight of stairs, making it a challenge for parents with strollers and people with accessibility issues to enter. There are no windows, no emergency exit, and no possibility of expansion within the building. So a couple of years ago, food bank volunteers began dreaming big.

“The board considered a number of options to obtain a more suitable facility: renting a space, buying a space, and eventually, with great support from the District of Invermere (DOI), decided on building a facility on their property,” said CVFB executive director Lawrie Mack.

“It’s fantastic; it’s a great day here,” remarked Mayor Al Miller at the ceremony on Wednesday, May 22nd. Mayor Miller spoke of the high value of the food bank within the community.

“It’s a safety net for those who run into some harder times,” he said, adding a service like this helps those who often only need help for a little while, then those people in turn can help others as they are able. He praised the hard-working volunteers and commented that this facility will be good for volunteers and clients who need CVFB services.

The DOI worked with the food bank executive to come up with a plan for a new facility, and Home Hardware volunteered time to draw up the plans. The new L-shaped building, with 1,550 square feet on both floors, will include wheelchair access. One side of the building will include a garage door to make large shipments easy to unload. There will be interior and exterior stairs leading to the basement, which will be unfinished and is planned for storage use. There will be washrooms, a security system, and even new

refrigerators: “enough refrigerators that we can likely move to more gleaning” in the future, speculated Mr. Mack.

Project manager Ken Willimont estimates the building will take three and a half to four months to complete, with a mid-September opening expected.

B.C government sinks Pedley marina proposal

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com The B.C. government has sunk a proposal for a private marina on Lake Windermere.

In 2018, the Pedley Heights Community Association proposed a 90-berth moorage facility on Lake Windermere at Baltac Bay. In a public hearing in July 2018, Mark Voszler, president of the Pedley Heights Community Association, presented the proposal for a joint moorage facility between Pedley and Baltac communities. Representatives from both neighbourhoods made clear the agreement was struck after years of consultation, internal discussion, and compromise.

In the 10 days between the public hearing and Regional District of East Koote-

nay (RDEK) board meeting, the proposal was reduced from 90 to 60 boat slips.

The RDEK Board approved the rezoning needed to move the project forward.

Separate from the RDEK bylaw amendment process, the association also approached the Province for a crown land application to address the changes needed in the crown-owned water.

The application was denied last month by the Province, with the ministry giving four reasons for the decision. The first was unmitigated environmental concerns: the marina was proposed in a key habitat area, there was insufficient evidence provided by a qualified environmental professional, and an environmental mitigation strategy or management plan was not provided by the proponent. The second was impacts to public use, asserting the public would

This past week, May 20th through May 26th, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 53 calls for service. The following are some of the more notable files our officers responded to.

• On Monday, May 20th at 1:30 a.m., an officer was making patrols in Invermere when he observed a gold Subaru stop well before a set of traffic lights on Athalmer Road, then waited for some time before proceeding after the light turned green. The officer conducted a traffic stop and while speaking to the driver, he noticed signs of alcohol impairment. The driver admitted to consuming alcohol earlier in the evening. The driver submitted to a breath demand which resulted in a fail. The driver was issued a 90-day driving prohibition and his vehicle was impounded.

• On Friday, May 24th, a resident on Dincey Road in Radium Hot Springs reported a theft from a shed on the property. Missing was a grinder, a sander and a circular saw. It was unknown when the theft occurred.

• On Saturday, May 25th shortly before midnight, police were called to a disturbance at a residence on Co-

lumbia Lake Road in Fairmont Hot Springs.

The caller reported a male youth was intoxicated and had started breaking furniture inside the residence. When told to leave, the male started throwing rocks. Police located and arrested the youth nearby and released him to his parents.

• On Saturday, May 25th at about 3:40 p.m., an individual called police to report a suspicious occurrence. The individual was in the parking lot of No Frills grocery store in Invermere when an adult male with dark curly hair approached him and tried to sell him what he claimed to be an 18 karat gold ring for $200. The male was driving an SUV with a female passenger. An officer patrolled the area but was not able to locate the man.

• On Sunday, May 26th at 3:30 p.m., police received a report of an intoxicated male at the Redstreak campground in Radium Hot Springs. Police spoke to the male who agreed to stay at a hotel for the night. Later the same evening police received a call from the Horsethief Pub in Radium Hot Springs for a male who was threatening bar staff. Police attended and discovered it was the same male they had dealt with earlier in the evening. The male was arrested for uttering threats and held in cells until he was sober.

In 2012, local rancher Albert Cooper died, leaving $723,000 of his estate to the food bank.

That money was invested, with interest from the investment being a major sustaining force for the food bank, alongside regular donations, Mr. Mack explained.

“We hope to get about $70,000 more to bring our net cost down to $100,000, thus allowing us to keep a significant fund for investing. . . to ensure the long-term viability and sustainability of the CVFB,” explained Mr. Mack.

To commemorate Mr. Cooper’s investment in the CVFB, the new building will be named in his honour.

Mr. Voszler, who spoke at the public hearing on behalf of the Pedley Heights Community Association and was the president at the time, did not return repeated phone calls from the Pioneer to speak to the application.

Susan Clovechok, Area F director, said she has not heard from any residents about the provincial decision, and furthermore that no discussion on further applications or alternatives have come forward to the RDEK regarding a marina on Lake Windermere.

Ms. Clovechok was not the Area F director when the public hearing or RDEK vote took place, but did attend the public hearing to stay informed on issues in the area.

“We heard at the public hearing in the fall that the issues on the lake are very polarizing. It was clear – regardless of their position – people are very passionate about the lake,” Ms. Clovechok said. “The lake can be very busy, and that’s where issues arise.”

Sustainable future for food bank

Nonprofits are the lifeblood of our community.

There are dozens of service groups filling gaps, finding fun, and overall just making the Valley a better place to live, work, and play.

But nonprofits are not without their challenges.

A site called nonprofithub.org refers to several common pitfalls of nonprofit organizations: retaining / engaging donors, not enough resources, and sustainability.

Certainly sustainability is key to the longevity of any organization.

“Just because you have a great mission doesn’t gaurantee that you’ll be around for years. It’s a harsh reality, but it’s just that: reality,” it stated.

So it is even more commendable that the Columbia Valley Food Bank (CVFB) is looking far into the future when making decisions. They are not only talking sustainabilty, they are acting in a way that will keep CVFB sustainable for decades to come.

As noted in the story on page 3 of the Pioneer this week, the CVFB was the honoured recipient of a sizeable donation from the estate of Albert Cooper when he passed away in 2012. Mr. Cooper left more than $650,000 of his estate as a legacy fund in 2014, followed by a further $73,000 in 2016, totalling $723,000.

That is no chump change.

Volunteers paddle the food bank forward day in and day out, year after year. But money keeps the operation afloat. While the Columbia Valley gives generously to food bank campaigns, there are still costs with keeping a building open and the lights on, as well as stocking up on items throughout the year that are sometimes not covered by the pockets of Valley residents.

The executive of the CVFB made the decision to invest a large chunk of Mr. Cooper’s donation. The interest from the investment has been “a major sustaining force for the food bank since that time,” reported executive director Lawrie Mack.

Instead of using all the money to build the new food bank, much of it is being kept in investments to help fund the food bank for years to come. And funders have applauded that decision whole-heartedly. Cheque writers for the new facility, knowing full well the financial health of the CFVB, have backed up the financially-saavy decision with their own contributions to the new facility, including Columbia Basin Trust, Columbia Valley Community Foundation and Kootenay Savings.

Smart planning for a smart future rewards smart results. Long after this batch of volunteers have come and gone from serving with the CVFB, the nonprofit that services the most vulnerable in the Columbia Valley will continue to thrive thanks to the current decision-makers in the organization and their sustainable decision.

Musical mystery solved Dear Editor: Re: historical lens photo May 16th (above) That is one of my favourite historical photos, and has been featured before in the pages of the Pioneer in the past.

The year was 1912! The same year England was flooded with leaflets about the Windermere Valley, the land of orchards and opportunity.

It was the year the Kootenay Central Railway began to thread its way through Athalmer on its trek from Golden to Cranbrook.

It was the year the unsinkable Titanic crashed into an iceberg and sank.

It was also the year a representative of Mr. Holland, owner of Fairmont, made the rounds in England with the question, “How would you like to go to Canada?”

Many who saw the leaflets, but could only dream of that ‘land of milk and honey’, said, ‘Lets go’!

The photo was taken in Fairmont. Most of the men

in the photo are new immigrants to Canada, excited to start a new life while working for Mr. Holland. (They are pictured with their prized possessions, including the letter-writer’s grandfather holding his accordian.)

It was these men who built the large barn that still stands near Fairmont Mountainside course.

A few years later most of these men were back in Europe engaged in the First World War. Some were killed and some badly wounded, including my grandfather, who was determined to make it back to his newfound home, where he raised his family supported only by their fresh market farm.

Another note to the photo: it was taken by accomplished historical photographer A.E. Fisher,who recorded much of the early 1900s valley history. He also was one of the immigrants from England seeking a better life.

Drawing the line at hateful nonsense Dear Editor: The letter titled “Colour me mad” (Pioneer May 23rd) deserves response and I hope you get many. Firstly to the students of J. Alfred Laird Elementary, you kids are awesome! Good work and thank you! I’m sure you learned a whole lot about political process, making a difference in your community and standing up in unity to foster human rights and broad social inclusivity and diversity. It was time well spent. Unfortunately if you did read the Letters To The Editor then you saw that doing the right thing is not always welcomed by everyone. But never mind that noise, be proud of your achievement, you brought goodness to your community.

In respect to the letter itself, “mad” is probably a good descriptor especially in the “few bricks short of a load” category. The world of political commentary can be an ugly one. In a country that champions vague notions of free speech, a great deal of vitriolic nonsense gets spewed by idiots. The mad letter is one of the worst examples I have seen in a while. It is an unfiltered, irrational and hateful attack on some very young members of the community. They did not deserve it by any stretch

of the imagination.

So where do we draw the line? Where does unfiltered free speech give way to other considerations like the lingering, self-questioning and intimidating affect that kind of hateful nonsense can have on young impressionable minds? It was clearly intended to intimidate and bully and was borderline hate speech. The writer may have a right to so-called free speech but that does not mean he has a right to a platform for it in a community newspaper. Let him find himself a soapbox and stand on Main Street and vent his misery to the world, but the Pioneer did not need to offer him a megaphone, especially in the same issue that recognized the students’ efforts on its cover. Perhaps if the letter were directed at adults then maybe it might have been excusable but it wasn’t. In my opinion the Pioneer failed to recognize the intent and target and to thoughtfully and correctly apply its editorial discretion in this case. You explicitly reserve the right to edit such letters for civility; it’s too bad you didn’t.

Mutual respect needed on private property and public access rights Dear Editor: In your article of May 23rd, Mr. Hoar is quoted as saying that “JC Alacoque owns land along Westside Road that has a resource road running through it - this is also gated and posted illegally.”

This is not the case. That road does not run through our property.

Mr. Hoar, and your paper, should check the facts before publishing untruths that are damaging to our family’s reputation.

I think he is referring to the road known as “Sattman’s road.” It runs westward from Westside Road through Grizzly Ridge property and past our place to the north of it. We do not own any of it. We hold a registered easement on that road to access our property. That allows us and our guests to use it. Usage by anybody else is up to Grizzly Ridge. It is not gated, and the current owners have always allowed public access. The private property signs along it are to keep people on the road and out of the bush.

Sattman’s Road was built during the construction of the railroad by loggers to supply railway ties. It was then used and maintained for many decades by loggers and Christmas tree harvesters for their private use.

Not a cent of public money has ever been spent on it for construction or

maintenance. It is not a gazetted public road.

We have spent considerable amounts of private money over the years, first to improve it, then to maintain it every year.

Our family are B.C. tax paying citizens, and we understand the need for public access to crown lands. We love Rogun Lake and Castle Rock as much as anybody else, but we don’t think trespassing on private property to get there is right. Private property rights in this country are well defined and understood by most people. We have property rights, in part, to act as a defense against the encroaching power of governments. That means that if the government needs to establish public access to crown lands through private property, they should purchase an existing road, or build one, with taxpayer’s money, and maintain it too.

There must be a fair balance between public access rights to crown lands, and private property owner’s rights. There must be mutual respect.

Remember that private property owners pay the taxes on that land, the public does not.

Your paper should publish a correction in next week’s edition to rectify your erroneous statement.

Trashy behaviour at Fairmont transfer station Dear Editor: This was the state of the transfer station Saturday, May 25th. According to the Southwest Disposal driver, this occurred while he was on site!

The mess was cleaned up by two senior citizens. We need two things to check this nonsense: 1. A surveillance camera so we can

identify the abuser.

2. A hefty fine for this abuse.

The transfer station in Fairmont is a very welcome facility. It is well-run and kept clean for the benefit of everyone. Thanks to the folks who work hard to keep it so.

Local author D.M. Ditson offers glimpse to recovery

She glances around the room, the smiling faces of trusted friends looking back at her inside Mountain Hub. She takes another breath, looks down at the pages, and begins to read.

Ms. Ditson, local author and Pioneer reporter, has been leading up to this moment since she was a little girl and the disconnect between what was told to her and what she noticed seemed off. Since she was a teenager, and people in authority laughed at what they should have taken seriously. Since she was an adult, facing the most excruciating moments of her life. Since she spiraled downwards, her body literally convulsing from the trauma stored in her cells. Since she sought recovery from sexual assault and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Since she took pen to paper and began to write her way through her journey, then share – ever so carefully – her words as she found healing. Since her words turned into paragraphs turned into pages turned into chapters turned into a book.

Wide Open was released on May 1st. The reading at Mountain Hub was a practice event in preparation for a whirlwind book tour launch earlier this month that took Ms. Ditson across three provinces and drew national media attention including a live interview with CTV, four CBC radio interviews that aired from Saskatchewan to British Columbia, even a mention in the Globe and Mail.

Each book launch includes Ms. Ditson reading several excerpts from her book, a short talk then a question and answer session.

The response to the book has been positive and encouraging so far, she said. Reviewers have heaped high praise on Wide Open, from calling it the “must-read memoir of the year” to a brave and powerful story. An Amazon review said it was a great book that will help many people. It is to that end Ms. Ditson is sharing her

“I wanted to share my story in order to help other people see there’s a way out,” she said. “It’s been exhilarating for me to be able to share it and have it resonate with other people and have it help and support them.”

While Wide Open covers very heavy topics, expect the book launch to show the triumphant and positive arc of the story, on how to make a good life again after something hard happens.

“The book is about sexual assault, post traumatic stress disorder, and recovery. It’s pretty raw, it’s pretty graphic, and it shows exactly how I clawed my way out of the throes of that illness,” she said. But, “even though there are a lot of painful parts to my story, I think overall it’s a really positive message.”

The latest stop on her book tour brings Ms. Ditson back to the Columbia Valley, where she will be reading from her memoir at two separate events at the Invermere and Radium public libraries. The Invermere Public Library hosts Ms. Ditson Saturday, June 1st at 2 p.m. Radium Public Library hosts an event Tuesday, June 4th from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

East Meets West Celtic Fusion

If you talk to Marie Brauer without knowing her story, you might get the impression that she’s a local in the Valley, or even that she has this life-thing figured out. But if you think that, then you would be wrong.

Her pronounced German accent is the first hint that may pop your mistaken first impression. The second surprise comes when you find out her age. Marie recently moved to the Valley from Germany last August, and is currently in grade 11 at David Thompson Secondary School (DTSS). In just the few short months she’s been here, Marie has become so at home that she can’t imagine moving back to Germany. How has she done this? One of the best ways to get to know the community, she says, has been through volunteering.

“Volunteering makes me feel like I’m giving something back. I like seeing the gratitude from people.”

Most of Marie’s local volunteer work has been through the recently formed Interact Club at DTSS, where she serves as the group’s president. The club, which was introduced to DTSS in January, is one of many worldwide. Interact Club is a service club for youth aged 12-18, and was started by Rotary International. The club aims to strengthen leadership qualities and build confidence in those who join.

“It’s hard to define what we do, but basically all it is is volunteer work within the community,” said Marie.

So far, this volunteer work has involved a local shoe drive to collect shoes that will be sent to Ecuador. They accomplished this in partnership with the local thrift store, and with help from the Colville Interact Club in Washington state. “It took us about three months to do it, but we made a difference and that’s what counts,” said Marie.

Currently, there are 10 members, including Marie, in the local Interact Club. Worldwide, there are 20,372 clubs with more than 450,000 members.

“The members we have right now are consistent,” says Marie, adding that “We’re getting there. All these other clubs have so many members because they’ve had so much time to evolve, but we’re just getting started.”

Neina Flight and Tyson Hagen are two of the consistent members. Both joined the club when it first began. Both were involved with similar clubs at old schools, which is one of the reasons they wanted to join the Interact Club. Both have just entered adolescence, but speak about what they do at the club and why they enjoy it as though this is their career.

“It’s a good opportunity for you to learn more about your community and your peers. It makes me confident,” said Tyson.

Members of the DTSS Interact Club volunteer their time, learn about the community, and build confidence.

Photo by Katie Watt Tyson and Neina help manage outreach for the club, and together they strategize how to get youth involved with the group. So far, they’ve found that it’s mostly the students in grade 8 and 9 that are involved in the club, with Marie being the exception.

Regardless of age, however, all members have found that being part of the club has helped them grow in similar ways.

“I’ve learned so much about leadership and teamwork,” said Marie, with both Neina and Tyson in agreement. “Everybody has things they want to do with the money raised, but there’s only a certain amount of things that we can do. It’s not possible to do everything, so you learn how to work together, make decisions together, and how to compromise.”

The club’s knack for teamwork is visible in their plans for future projects. Currently, they plan to host another fundraiser before the end of the year, and over the summer they hope to get started on a project they call “Students for Students.” This project, said Ms. Brauer, will involve giving students better access to food over the summer by partnering with the local youth network to make snack bags for youth.

While the Interact Club is a tightly knit group of students, they’re always looking for more members. Currently, the group meets every Tuesday and second Wednesday at lunch at DTSS. Canadians are living longer than ever. In 2015, the World Health Organization reported that the average life expectancy in Canada is 82.2 years. And with increased longevity comes a greater chance that people will require long-term health care services. In fact, it’s estimated that about 70 per cent of people over age 65 will eventually need some form of long-term care.

Long-term care in Canada is either fully private or publicly subsidized. Those who opt for fully private care pay their facility’s going rate. Those who choose publicly subsidized care in B.C., however, will have to pay up to 80 per cent of their after-tax income. Fortunately, there is an opportunity for couples to potentially reduce the cost of one spouse’s long-term care.

How is my rate calculated?

As mentioned above, long-term care rates are income-tested, and are based on one’s tax return from two years prior. This means that someone entering care in 2019 would use their 2017 tax return: specifically, Line 236 less the amount in Line 435.

In British Columbia, if a person’s after-tax income is less than $19,500 per year, their monthly rate is calculated as their after-tax income less a $3,900 deductible, divided by 12. For example, someone with $19,000 of after-tax income would pay about $1,258 per month.

Regardless of income level, the minimum monthly rate is $1,162.80 per month.

If a person’s after-tax income is equal to or greater than $19,500 per year, their monthly rate is calculated as their after-tax income multiplied by 80 per cent, divided by 12. For example, a person with $40,000 of after-tax income would pay about $2,666 per month. For 2019, the maximum monthly rate for subsidized long-term care is $3,377.10 per month.

Income Splitting Most people aged 65 or older have pension income, or the means to create some. In most cases, if one spouse

is entering long-term care, it makes sense to fully split that spouse’s pension income, even if it pushes the other spouse’s income higher than theirs.

For example, consider a husband and wife with identical incomes in 2017: $50,000 pre-tax; $35,000 of which is pension income. Each has the option to allocate up to $17,500 pension income to the other. The husband is entering long-term care.

If the husband does not elect to split his pension income, his after-tax income will be about $42,955, and his long-term care rate would be $2,864 per month. If he decided to income-split, his after-tax income would be about $29,908 and his monthly rate would be reduced to $1,994.

Their combined tax bill, which would normally be $14,090 per year, would increase to $15,077 with income splitting. On the other hand, they would save $10,440 per year on the husband’s reduced bed rate, for a net savings of $9,453. This would greatly assist his wife with the household expenses, especially those that don’t change whether or not her husband lives at home.

Re-file past returns You may be thinking, this all sounds good, but if my current long-term care rate is based on my 2017 tax return, there’s nothing I can do to lower my rate during the first year or two. Not so! Previous year’s tax returns can be re-filed with pension income fully split, and those new figures used to determine one’s monthly rate.

Unfortunately, due to attribution rules, income from joint accounts can’t be allocated completely to one spouse or the other. Additionally, nothing can be done about personal investment accounts unless the owner gives away their money, but doing so could trigger unwanted taxation in the form of capital gains.

Final thoughts The income-tested nature of long-term care rates means that every effort should be made to lower one’s taxable income. To find out what options are available to you, speak to your local long-term care case manager and consult with your financial advisor and accountant.

You don’t have to be a fiction enthusiast to enjoy libraries – they are a perfect intersection for all interests. Did you know that the Radium Public Library is home to a plethora of resources both inprint and online? Our website serves as a directory for all of our online resources.

Even though we are a small rural institution, our little library boasts a sizable database collection to connect our patrons to essential information services. Through our website, we can direct patrons to relevant legal material, help patrons discover their ancestry, explore travel guides and so much more. Our online resources also provide our patrons with access to E-books and Audiobooks, and provide access to interlibrary loans. Resource sharing is integral for rural communities; it provides residents with equitable access to print material from larger institutions across the province. And, as referenced by columnist Mary Ladky in the Globe and Mail earlier this month, libraries are a driving force for social mobility; reading for enjoyment can even influence a child’s educational success more than the socio-economic status of their family. Twelve angry actors dramatically debate decision on death

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com If 12 students at David Thompson Secondary School (DTSS) seem a little dazed these days, please forgive them. If they wander the halls muttering to themselves, occasionally glancing down at crumpled sheets in their hands, give them a wide berth as you walk by. If they stand in the school field monologuing, let them be. After all, they are likely drama students doing final preparations for their upcoming play.

It is crunch time for the senior theatre class as they get ready for the year-end production. This year’s play was a good fit for the grade 10-12 class, as there are just enough students to play all the roles. Twelve Angry Jurors is an adaptation of Twelve Angry Men, an Emmy award-winning 1954 movie about a jury deciding a homicide case.

“This drama has been a fun challenge for us to work with because it is all dialogue, and not much action, so blocking it on stage to keep it visually interesting has required a lot of creative ideas from everyone,” said drama teacher Shelley Little. “It’s very tense too, with a lot of heated emotion and complex character dynamics.”

One such character is juror #3, played by grade 12 student Breckin Baillie.

“I saw that movie a couple years ago, and something about that character just lashed out at me,” said Breckin.

“The concept of someone being so very angry and then

breaking down and you find out why they’re angry.”

Breckin never saw himself as the drama type. He needed an elective in grade 11 and the school counsellor suggested he try drama.

“I was so vehemently opposed to it, I was like ‘oh god I don’t want to hang out with the drama kids, they’re so weird’,” he recalled.

But by the end of the year, he liked drama so much he signed up again. Breckin said one of the biggest skills he takes away from the program is how to work well with others.

“It’s how to work as a team, and how to be constructive with feedback . . . it also teaches you how to be up on stage in front of people,” Breckin said.

Lily Flamand learned last year how to be up on stage in front of people. She spoke many times, in another language, in front of an audience as part of her Rotary exchange program to Japan for grade 11. So it was a natural progression to take to the stage this year, though she came into drama unexpectedly. She was taking an online course and began sitting in the drama room during that period to watch the action. She was invited to join the class and decided on a whim to sign up.

“It’s allowed me to express myself in a way that I want to express myself,” she said. “I’m a very honest person, so it’s kind of nice with this [character] to be allowed to be annoyed.”

“I love playing my juror because . . . it’s a great way to [have an] outlet for my emotions. I get to channel it and just kind of be aggressive. I get to yell, and I have a great time – it’s so much fun,” she said emphatically.

All the students have worked hard to learn their characters, Ms. Little confirmed.

“I’ve been so impressed with how the students have studied their characters and really developed their personalities and biases, as well as going the extra mile in finding the right costumes.”

Avery Nowicki is playing juror #5 and is coordinating the costumes.

Avery based the costumes around the 1950s as she could find more conservative, appropriate attire for that period in thrift stores up and down the Valley.

Avery, a grade 11 student at DTSS, has loved the stage since she played the classic role of Wendy in Peter Pan when she was a kid. To get into the mindset of juror #5, she watched videos of people sitting on juries, watching how jurors react to information, and researched about the court system, adding that being in Law 12 this year has helped her to prepare for the role.

“The conversations we’ve had in preparing this production have gone far beyond the theatrics of the stage and they’ve learned so much about the legal system, human bias, justice and the importance of reasonable doubt and the presumption of innocence.”

On Monday of the May long weekend I had the honour of assisting local high school art teacher Robyn Oliver in hanging our annual David Thompson Secondary school REACH art show. It was a great chance to learn about so many of our talented youth and all they have to offer this Valley.

From mixed media, to pottery, to textiles, ink, watercolours, photographs, acrylic, and lino cut print works, these students show off their superb skills. Ones that are bound to catch your eye are “A Man You Cannot Describe in 1000 Words”

Ms. Oliver said of Maddy’s piece, “it’s not usual for students to capture something so current and important in our world,

with their art,” and Maddy’s piece does just that. Tomorrow evening will be our Artist Party Soiree. It doesn’t take long in the Columbia Valley before you meet a golfer, drive by a golf course, or grab the clubs and head to the links yourself. Golf is as much a part of the Valley for many people here as is the lake or the mountains. So here is a roundup of some of the interesting golf news in the Valley these days, including several upcoming golf events, a new caddie program, and a new app.

Caddie Master Eagle Ranch Resort has hired a caddie master, Quinn Vilneff. Mr. Vilneff says the position means he is the manager of the caddies, and his intent is to bring the level of caddie services up to a world-class level.

Caddies are “an amenity that’s pretty old school,” said Mr. Vilneff, who has caddied for the past decade all around the world.

He says with only a limited number of caddie programs in the entire country, this is something Eagle Ranch would like to build up and become known for.

“Caddies enhance the experience while you’re at Eagle Ranch. We want to provide you with a service quality that is unmatched,” said Mr. Vilneff.

The goal of a caddie, he explained, is to help you enjoy your time on the course more and play a better game. Caddies will let you know the tricky spots, help you with the lay of the land, and assist you in making the best shots you can – “they’re here to help.”

Eventually the plan is to establish a youth caddy program, said Mr. Vilneff, that includes scholarship opportunities, called the Evan Scholarship. The scholarship offers financial support to caddies who have a strong caddie record, excellent academics, outstanding character, and demonstrated financial need.

EK Seniors Tournament For the first time ever, the East Kootenay Seniors tournament will be held at Copper Point Golf Club. Running Monday, June 10th and Tuesday, June 11th, the 52nd annual tournament is for senior men aged 55 and up. There is also a ‘junior’ division for men aged 50-54. It is a 36-hole stroke play flighted competition.

Both days will be a shotgun start at 10 a.m. There will be gross, net, and hole-inone prizes, as well as a buffet dinner and reception following round two.

Scott McClain, PGA of Canada head golf professional at Copper Point, said up to 112 players can participate in the tournament, and there is still room to enter.

To keep things fair for senior players, the players will tee off from a middle set of tee boxes (the green tee markers).

Copper Point will be running their patio pitch-off during the seniors tournament. Players get $5 for two attempts to get closest to the pin in mens, womens or junior division. Patio Pitch Off happens every Friday evening on the Par 1 from 7-9 p.m. beside The View Restaurant deck at Copper Point Golf Club. Half the money collected will go to a local initiative. Last year, Patio Pitch Off raised $1,400, which was donated to a 2019 high school grad from David Thompson Secondary School.

Coys App Coys Par 3 now has a free app to make playing at the Fairmont course a more enjoyable and informative experience. It was developed by Philip Boyer, who explained the app allows you to digitally track your score, as well as keep your scoresheets from previous games which makes it easier to track your progress over a season. It tracks distances to each of the holes, has weather information, and also allows you to book a teetime. Mr. Boyer developed the app after he was playing at Coys one day and started thinking how it would be great to know, at the quick click of a button, the distance he had to shoot on each hole. It is now available for download from the Google play store, and will be available soon at the Apple store.

Marathon golf day for ALS support

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com A team from Copper Point Golf Club will once again be participating in the Golfathon for ALS. Five golf pros will golf from sunrise to sunset to support those living with ALS and help raise awareness. Scott McClain, Brian Schaal, Dennis Bradley, Dale Moore and Kevin Bennett will be teaming up for this year’s event.

Added up, “We’re at about 104 years of accumulated experience as professional members of the PGA,” Mr. McClain remarked. “For the ALS day, this is a great chance for us to spend a bit of time together and make some swings.”

Copper Point Golf Club has participated in the ALS Golfathon every year since 2007. In that time, they have raised $37,000 for the ALS Society of BC. In 2018, their team played 263 holes each over 17 hours and 50 minutes. They had 76 birdies, 6 eagles including one hole-in-one by Mr. Schaal, and a total of 4,158 strokes.

“We just keep moving,” Mr. McClain said when asked how they manage to keep the momentum up for that many

hours of play. He said one of the tricks is they each have their own golf cart, and they bring extra pairs of shoes and socks.

Fresh socks after hours of play, Mr. McClain confided, are a wonderful feeling.

But it is worth it to support the cause, he was quick to add.

“It’s a way to give back,” he said.

“And I love playing that much golf, that fast. You don’t ever get to go that fast . . . For me personally, I love just not having to think as much, going with instinct and pulling the trigger.”

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder that affects the person’s motor neurons that carry messages to the muscles resulting in weakness and wasting in arms, legs, mouth, throat and elsewhere; typically the person is immobilized within two to five years of the initial diagnosis. There is no known cause or cure yet, but there is hope through the ALS Society of BC. Proceeds from the Golfathon for ALS provide crucial support services to ALS patients and their families, friends, and caregivers.

WildSafeBC Community Coordinators are back in the Columbia Valley this season with the goal of keeping our wildlife wild and our community members safe.

Jenna Milne is the returning coordinator for the District of Invermere and Jen Baker is the new coordinator for Radium and RDEK Areas F & G. With collaboration from all community members, we hope to have a low human-wildlife conflict year.

Let’s be proactive!

Deer fawning season is upon us.

Fawning begins the end of May and continues through the month of June.

During this time, and all through the summer, does are extremely protective of their young. In the wild, members of the canid family are natural predators of fawns and therefore a doe is likely to see your dog as a threat. Last year in Invermere there was a large increase in aggressive deer reports (19 reports) compared to 2017 (2 reports). Most reports came from residents walking their dog(s) who were confronted by a defensive doe. As always, and especially during this crucial time, give deer lots of space so they don’t feel threatened, and keep your dog on a leash.

Deer may signal an impending attack by laying their ears back and lowering their head. If you are attacked by a deer, stay upright, cover your head with your arms and move to shelter.

Fawns can attract predators such as coyotes, wolves and cougars, so be extra vigilant. Keep pets indoors, especially at night. Report any dangerous wildlife sightings or deer acting aggressively to the Conservation Officer Service (COS) reporting line at 1-877-952-7277 or #7277 (RAPP) on your cell. This allows the COS to track the animal’s behaviour and assess the appropriate response, if any. It also alerts WildSafeBC, so that we may put up signage to warn others, and provide education and safety tips.

If you come across a lone fawn do not touch it. Does will hide their young while they feed, returning occasionally to nurse. By disturbing the fawn, you greatly decrease its chance of survival. Remem-

ber, never feed deer, or any wildlife; they have plenty of natural food sources available in the wilds and keeping them around could cause a deer problem in your neighborhood. Plus, in Invermere it is unlawful to feed deer and fineable up to $10,000.

Bears are back, and they’re hungry! WildSafeBC encourages you to keep your garbage inaccessible and don’t put it out until 8 a.m. on your day of collection, as stated in Bylaw 1426. Store garbage inside a secure location or in a bear-resistant container.

Some garden sheds and garbage storage enclosures are not secure from a hungry bear. Unfortunately, some residents and visitors are still storing their garbage in a way that is accessible to bears. Have you noticed all the beautiful blossoms on fruit trees around the Valley?

We can expect a bumper crop of fruit later this summer, so start making plans for harvesting your fruit. If you do not want the fruit, consider spraying the blossoms off to reduce fruit production or, replacing the tree with a non-fruit bearing variety. Part-time homeowners especially, are encouraged to plan ahead. Join the local Facebook group Columbia Valley Fruit Exchange, and watch for more discussion on fruit trees coming up in the Pioneer and on our Facebook page, WildSafeBC Columbia Valley.

As a part of the educational portion of the program, WildSafeBC will be visiting various neighborhoods across Invermere again this summer doing weekly garbage tagging. Garbage bins that are placed on the curb the night before pickup will receive a bright yellow education sticker that serves as a warning to residents that their garbage is the most reported attractant for black bears. Repeat offenders will be referred to the bylaw officer.

CO updates on recent human / wildlife conflict

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer. com It’s that time of year: spring brings with it flowers, mountain hikes, warming waters, and seemingly inevitable conflicts between humans and wildlife.

Sgt. Drew Milne, Columbia Valley Conservation Officer (CO), reminds residents to report wildlife sightings in town, or conflicts with wildlife, to the RAPP line. Contrary to some people’s opinions, alerting authorities does not mean a wild animal will be put down. COs will do all they can to encourage the wild animal to move along, using euthanization as a last resort, Sgt. Milne explained.

“We assess every animal on a case-by-case basis. The last thing we want to do is euthanize an animal.”

COs did euthanize a juvenile black bear a couple weeks ago in the village of Panorama. The officers had received several reports of what appeared to be an injured black bear. They responded several times without finding the bear, then finally found it up a tree on the week of May 12th.

“The right rear paw was sev-

ered; the injury was quite severe” he described. “The animal was not healthy – it was quite emaciated, no fat on the body and very lethargic.”

After assessing the animal, they determined it needed to be put down. While they could not confirm, Sgt. Milne said it appears the bear had been involved in a motor vehicle incident.

When asked about a bear roaming around Invermere recently, Sgt. Milne said they did hear about a bear sighting but by the time they got a complaint, it was well after the bear had moved on.

Sgt. Milne said that there has been an “average” amount of complaints this year, though a bump up from the past few years.

“Last year was a little bit lower than this year. But on a five year average, we’re finding a normal amount of bear activity,” he said.

Cougar activity has quieted down, but there has been an increase on coyote complaints, especially around Canal Flats.

December 15th, 1941 – April 26th, 2019 Stan will always be very much missed by his loving wife of 54 years, Joan. Son Paul (Sarah), daughter Nancy (Kent), daughter Julie (Ted), sister Diane (Al). Six grandchildren – Kale, Kade, Madison, Brayden, Liam and Lane. Sister in-law Helen. Three predeceased brothers; Ron, Gorden and Norman.

Anderson, Gunner 1941– 2019

Gunner Anderson of Invermere, BC passed away on May 20, 2019. He was born on August 23, 1941 in Elk Point, Alberta.

Gunner was a kind, gentle man with a keen sense of humour, and had a deep love for God. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. He spent days out on the golf course and enjoyed meeting new people. He had a tool or gadget for anything that needed fixing and was always there to help get the job done.

Gunner was a loving husband, father and grandfather and enjoyed spending as much time with them as he could. He is survived by his wife Marion of 53 years, his son Todd (Wendy), his daughter Janice (Richard) and grandchildren (Kesia, Ela, Joshua and Jeremy).

Gunner was one of 6 children and is survived by siblings Elsie (Bill), Carole, Merlin (Mary), and Irene (Paul). He was predeceased by his parents Roy and Myrtle, his brother Lester, and brother-in-law Joe. A celebration of life will be held on June 15, 2019 at 10:30 am at the Lake Windermere Alliance Church. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Gunner’s memory to Focus on the Family Ministries.

S OBITUARY S ALICE TEGART (GLEB) 1921 - 2019 Alice Grace Tegart, the last remaining child of the Tegart family Columbia Valley Pioneers, passed away on Tuesday, May 14th at the age of 98.

Alice is survived by her daughter Brenda Erickson; 2 grandsons: David Bradley Semeniuk and Denver Dennis Gram with his wife Marjolaine Brousseau Paquet and great grandchildren Trinity Semeniuk and Jaxon Gram as well as nieces, nephews and close friends. She was predeceased by her parents Arthur and Mary Tegart and 11 siblings: Lloyd Tegart, Bob Tegart, Hazel Kohorst, George Tegart, Emily Westwood, Buster Tegart, Ivy Palmer, Marjorie Negley, Jim Tegart, Albert Tegart, and Monty Tegart. Alice was born in Invermere on January 24, 1921. She attended elementary school in Brisco and high school in Lillooet and proceeded to further her education at the Vancouver Business College.

In High River, AB Alice was a civilian uniformed member of the RCAF, working as an Offi ce Administrator and Parachute Quality Control Officer for the Military Service Number 5 EFTS (Elementary Flight Training School).

Her accounting career also led to jobs with Cominco Calgary, the Canadian Income Tax Department, and as Zellar’s Credit Manager for 24 years.

Alice lived in Brisco, Lillooet, High River, Calgary and Nanton before returning to her birthplace of Invermere where she enjoyed gardening, sewing, and spending time with family and friends.

Memorial donations may be made in Alice’s memory to the Arthritis Foundation or to the Alzheimer’s Society.

Bottoms up at annual East Kootenay Beer Festival

The 8th Annual East Kootenay Beer Festival, featuring BC Craft Distilleries at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort, will be bigger than ever. After selling out the last two years, special events coordinator Ainslie Machan said the resort is expanding the festival to accommodate 650 people.

“We’re excited to see our festival grow,” Ms. Machan said. “We have craft beer and distillery representatives from all over British Columbia coming to pour a variety of different craft beers, cider and liquors.”

With 25 samples for each participant, everyone’s beer mug samplers will be filled with plenty to taste.

“Everybody really enjoys trying new things,” she

said. “It’s a great opportunity to learn about new beers, ciders and liquors.”

The East Kootenay Festival takes place outside at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort Ski Chalet, with panoramic mountain views, live music by Cod Gone Wild and great samples. The unique location and social atmosphere make it a popular event for guests coming from out of town as well as locals.

The festival will feature a Pop-Up Liquor Store, where guests can purchase bottles and cans of their tasty new finds that aren’t necessarily available at local liquor stores.

Last year the event featured 55 varieties of beer and cider from 15 different suppliers from B.C. and Alberta.

“This year with the added distilleries there will be a

lot of variety for guests to sample” she said. “The Beer Festival attracts people from the Valley, Calgary and from all over Western Canada.”

Tickets are going fast for the outdoor festival, which will take place on Saturday, June 15th.

“What kid doesn’t like you to give them a weapon and say ‘let’s go into the woods?’” Ms. Walker asked rhetorically. “Kids, no matter the age, you give them a bow, you show them how to do it, and they have a great time... They have to work at it. It’s not easy. It’s not like The Hunger Games where you go: ‘I’m going to shoot this arrow and kill this thing’. They have to practice.

There’s some skill involved, but once they figure it out they can hit the target no problem.”

There will be three courses of varying difficulty levels from “fairly easy” to “super extreme” at the shoot, she said. Some of targets will be behind obstacles, obscured by trees or higher or lower than the shooter.

There will also be a concession, balloon shoots for kids and prizes.

Guests are welcome to camp out at the range for the weekend – if they don’t mind sharing the darkness with the holey foam beasts they’ve killed or enraged.

Registration will take place onsite. The shoot starts at 8:30 a.m. both days, but participants and spectators – no shields required – can start their days whenever they’d like.

“It’s good practice for out in the wilderness hunting,” Ms. Ferguson said. “I love the sport of it. I love the practice that it gives me. I like being outside. And the archery community is a really nice community to be a part of.”

Arrows, archery and an alligator in the woods

Life-sized foam animals will be lurking around the Lake Windermere District Rod & Gun Club range hoping to avoid the shots from your bow.

All kinds of creatures from a bear to a moose, elk, alligator, sheep, turkey and maybe even a dinosaur or two will be posed in the woods like giant pin cushions for the Bighorn 3D Archery Shoot on June 8th and 9th.

“It’s like being Robin Hood or Peter Pan and you’re in the woods with your big bow,” said Evy Walker, one of the organizers.

The event is for everyone from experienced archers who pack their own bows to novices and first-timers who need to borrow their equipment.

Those of all ages are welcome, said Kayla Ferguson, another organizer who won a different archery competition and who uses her bow for recreation and for hunting.

“If you can pick up a bow, if you can keep holding onto a bow, (the event is for you),” she said.

Even her three-year old, who just got his first bow, will be taking aim at the shoot, where plenty of safety measures will be in place.

“No one’s going to get shot in the bum, hopefully,” Ms. Ferguson said.

Ms. Walker said the Lake Windermere District Rod & Gun Club is hoping to see lots of families and kids at the event, which is taking place during the club’s 100th year.

Centennial fun for Rod and Gun Submitted by Lake Windermere District Rod & Gun Club The Lake Windermere District Rod & Gun Club is in full swing with celebrations on its 100th anniversary.

As the oldest conservation-minded organization in the Valley, we are hosting several events over the year, inviting the community to participate with us. We started off with a very successful annual banquet in March and just completed our Elmer Fudd Sporting Clays event where 86 participants plied their shooting skills at some “waskily wabbits” (clay of course).

In June we have two great events planned: June 8th and 9th is our archery competition (see story above). We then have our Family Fishing Day on June 15th at Lake Lillian. We are co-hosting this with the BC Conservation Officer Service and BC Fishery Society. A fishing license is not required as it is B.C.s annual free fishing day. Learn how to fish, talk to a Conservation Officer, and enjoy our barbecue at no cost.

Oh did I mention the raffles and free stuff?!

In July we really turn up the events dial, starting with our Fly Casting weekend July 6th and 7th at our range property west of Radium. We will be bringing in an instructor from Federation of Fly Fishermen to instruct beginners the art of fly casting which covers equipment, knots, entomology and casting. The sessions are broken up into ladies and men sessions and we only have 10 spots in each with equipment provided. On July 20th, join us at the Columbia River Nature Trust property just recently purchased near Edgewater for a Bat Fest. This starts at 4 p.m. with the building of bat houses followed by a barbecue hosted by the club. Then listen to a talk on

bats by a biologist from the Kootenay Bat Program followed by a look in the field for bats and to listen to their sonar detection through special detection equipment.

Our last event for the month is July 22 – 26th: a camp which we are co-hosting with the BC Wildlife Federation (BCWF) for youth aged 13 – 17 at our range property. Participants will learn and experience a large range of outdoor skills and environmental awareness. BCWF is only offering three of these camps around the province so we feel quite fortunate they have chosen our Valley for one.

We will need a break by August to recharge and get ready to host the National Sporting Clays competition August 30 – September 2nd at our range property. Top shooters from across Canada will, over four days, compete on various course setups to see who will be the best in their class. The club feels very honoured to have been chosen to host this prestigious event.

We are just about done. On October 4th and 5th, the Kootenay Conservation Program(KCP) will be holding its Anual Meeting in Invermere and the club will be assisting with this. KCP is an organization of over 80 partners who have a “common approach to land conservation through coordinated securement, stewardship and capacity-building efforts.” The annual meeting has great speakers and topics scheduled. There will be more shared about this event in the coming months. While doing all this, club members will also be working on habitat restoration projects, maintaining 10 backcountry rec sites and participating on boards and panels regarding wildlife and fish management. God has been good to me

By Pastor Murray Wittke Valley Christian Assembly Forty years ago this week I was released from Vancouver General. Two weeks earlier I’d started a well-paying job at a mill in northern B.C. with dreams of supporting my young family and purchasing a mobile home. On my sixth day of work I slipped while operating a block splitter and completely severed my left hand at the wrist. After a quick trip to the hospital where they bandaged my stump and packed my hand in ice I was flown to Vancouver where surgeons reattached my hand. It was the second time this procedure was done in B.C. After my cast was removed, reality set in. Life would never be the same again.

I spent a year at the WCB rehab center with hundreds of other physically damaged workers. Learning to

live with loss and adapting to a new normal was difficult.

I rode a roller coaster of emotions. Mostly I was worried about the future. I was 22 years old with limited education and work experience. At home I had a wife and six-month-old daughter to support. My worldly possessions consisted of an old pick-up truck, a shotgun, several guitars and a big red dog. As a new believer my prayers were a confusion of angry questions, doubts, desperate cries for help, flashes of hope, groans and long silences.

There were many dark days and sleepless nights but Jesus walked with me through them all.

It’s been 40 years since my accident. Looking back, life has turned out better than I could have hoped.

There’ve been other dark valleys to journey through since then but His help has always arrived; just in time and from unexpected places.

Whitney Huston’s song “I Love Lord” from the movie “The Preacher’s Wife” chokes me up every time I hear it. The words “I love the Lord; He heard my cry, and pitied every groan” come from Psalm 116 and express my gratitude for God’s faithfulness. Again and again He’s heard my cry for mercy. This old white-haired grandpa can’t help but sing, “God has been good to me.”

Education network finds stable funding support in endowment fund Submitted While the Columbia Basin Environmental Education Network (CBEEN) has been fortunate to receive support from a variety of granting organizations over the past 20 years, executive director Duncan Whittick wanted a more predictable funding source to support the organization in the longer term. The Environmental Education Endowment Fund is held in trust for CBEEN by the Columbia Valley Community Foundation, which invests all donations and provides an annual return that supports environmental stewardship and sustainability in the region.

“In setting up the endowment fund, we wanted to focus our efforts on the Columbia Valley because this is where our primary programs originated and where our head office is located,” Mr. Whittick said. “The Columbia Valley also has a strong history for supporting environmental education and we know there are very generous donors who live in our valley who may be interested in supporting this type of work.”

The stable funding in perpetuity is attractive to individual donors who know their gift will not only support CBEEN now but well into the future. In its first year in 2018, the fund reached its target of $10,000 and that target has doubled for 2019.

“While these numbers represent relatively modest contributions, they will help to build the foundation of the fund across the Columbia Valley and around the Columbia Basin,” said Mr. Whittick. “My hope is that if we put effort into this fund, and continue to attract small, medium and larger donations, that over the years we will

build our capacity to become an organization that can plan to make a positive impact in the long-term knowing that the funds will be there to support our work over that time.”

CBEEN’s goal is to eventually have 50 per cent of its funding coming from the endowment fund, which will help it over the hurdle faced by non-profit organizations: needing to think long term while not knowing where funding will be coming from year to year. Since it established the fund, CBEEN has been contacted by other organizations across the region and in fact across the country seeking more information on how they can set up a similar fund.

“I think that while endowment funds have been around for quite a while,” said Mr. Whittick, “organizations are now realizing the true value in what they can offer.”

He is very happy to meet for coffee with anybody considering making any size donation, or better yet, for a conversation somewhere in the valley’s beautiful outdoors. Because CBEEN currently has confirmed support from funders in the short term, his objective is simply to spread the word and have people make a decision in their own time.

“The endowment fund will give our organization the confidence to move forward and do the important work that lies ahead,” he said. “In the realm of environmental stewardship and sustainability, this type of long-term planning is vital.”

On the heels of the tailgate party June 8th will be the grand opening for Invermere’s new sister store in Golden. Al and Lucy Miller opened up the Golden Home Building Centre in December, just in time for the Christmas holidays.
