South Surrey The historic resort community of Crescent Beach is one of South Surrey’s most popular attractions. Just up the road, the Historic Stewart Farm, located in Elgin Heritage Park, provides a glimpse of Surrey’s farming history. Cloverdale/Clayton Settled in the mid- to late-1800s, Cloverdale grew from a largely rural and agricultural community into a bustling hub of commercial activity due in large part to its strategic location and connections to the railway. Today, Cloverdale is home to the Museum of Surrey and archives facility, unique heritage buildings and a quaint “Main Street” that retains much of its historic ambiance. Each May long weekend, Cloverdale Fairgrounds plays host to the Cloverdale Rodeo, one of Surrey’s largest annual events, and the neighbourhood’s Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre is the site for the city’s large annual Canada Day celebration.

Newton Newton is named after settler E.J. Newton who, in 1886, settled at what is now 72nd Avenue and 124th Street. The BC Electric Railway stimulated Newton’s growth and helped to establish the corner of 72nd Avenue and King George Boulevard as a town Centre. Newton also includes the historic village of Sullivan, located at 152nd Street and 64th Avenue. Guildford/Fraser Heights Early settlement in Guildford occurred in the Township of Port Kells which, in 1891, was connected by rail service to New Westminster. Whalley/City Centre The community takes its name from Arthur Whalley, who settled near the corner of King George Boulevard and 108th Avenue in 1925. The area, then known as Whalley’s corner, included a service station and small general store but quickly grew into a bustling commercial centre. Today, Whalley, sometimes known as North Surrey, is a thriving urban centre, home to Simon Fraser University’s Surrey campus, major shopping and recreational facilities, Surrey Memorial Hospital and destination parks including Green Timbers Urban Forest and Holland Park. Fleetwood The community of Fleetwood is named in honour of Lance Corporal Arthur Thomas Fleetwood, who died in the First World War. In 2008, Thomas Fleetwood was memorialized with a statue in front of the Fleetwood Community Centre and Library. In addition to the Fleetwood Community Centre, recreational facilities in Fleetwood include the Surrey Sport and Leisure Complex and Fleetwood Park, which offer a variety of activities, including walking trails, gardens and playing fields. The site is unique in many ways, including its position as one of the few remaining large, undyked sections of the lower Fraser River, and the unique ecological effects this creates. The best beach access points are found on Beecher Street,
Sullivan Street, and Target Street. At Sullivan Point, you will find spots to play beach volleyball and a large grassy area ideal for a blanket picnic. At 12160 Beecher St. Mud Bay Park: Offers a scenic walk and a chance to see shorebirds and waterfowl in Canada’s most valued Important Bird Area: Boundary Bay. The nature trail is nearly three kilometres long and takes about 1.5 hours to walk. Please note that from fall to early spring dogs, bikes, and horses are not permitted on the shoreline trails. Go for an ‘Artwalk’ in City Centre Surrey is filled with some amazing works of public art, and people can see some examples on the City Centre Artwalk. This self-guided tour is an opportunity to discover 19 public artworks along parks, pathways, SkyTrain pillars and civic buildings on University Drive in Surrey’s revitalized City Centre. People can choose their own route and walk a little, or see it all. The route is connected at the south end to King George SkyTrain station and at the north end to Gateway SkyTrain station. Here are some highlights of the art on this tour, as found on the City of Surrey’s website (Surrey.ca): “Convergence”: Originally installed at the North Surrey Recreation Centre in Spring 2011, these 50 mosaic projects can now be found outside the Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre. Connie Glover and Vallalee Hoffman worked to create a mosaic pathway. At 13458 107A Ave. “Marks”: Liz Magor’s four sculptural forms are installed in a group of three on the third floor and a single piece on the fourth floor of the City Centre Library. These large silicone forms look abstract at first, but seen from above, they resemble punctuation marks. At 10350 University Dr. “Protecting the Future, Serving the Present”: Crafted by Artform Sculpture Studio, this bronze-coloured concrete sculpture was dedicated to the Surrey Firefighters in recognition of their 42 | Surrey Community Guide

At Holland Park, 13428 Old Yale Rd. “Spring Floraform, Summer Floraform, and Seeds of Change”: Bruce Voyce’s series of large-scale, delicate sculptures, based on flowers, leaves, seeds, and seedpods, are located throughout Holland Park. The artist conceived metal sculptures that refer to edible and medicinal plants. At Holland Park. “Together”: Surrey’s City Hall features an artwork inspired by the theme of democracy. The lead artists, Sophie Nielsen and Rolf
Knudsen of Studio Roso, took their inspiration from the behaviour of animals, who work collectively to ensure their survival. Approximately 800 aluminum birds are suspended from the roof of the building’s six-storey atrium. At City Hall, 13450 104th Ave. “West Coast Landscape”: An expansive painting measuring 6’6” x 20’6”, “West Coast Landscape” was created specifically for the Surrey City Centre Public Library and is located near the entrance on the main floor. It is one of Gordon Smith’s largest creations. At 10350 University Dr.

Cycling in Surrey: A two-wheeled trip Surrey has plenty of bicycle trails for everybody, from the casual pedaler to the daredevil trail hound. Surrey has almost 90 kilometres of greenways and more than 350 kilometres planned. A comprehensive map of Surrey’s bike routes is online at surrey. ca/files/BikeRouteMap2016.pdf. A tried-and-true, easy bike trip for families on a sunny afternoon is the Barnston Island bike loop. It’s flat, paved and there generally aren’t too many cars along this
roughly 10-kilometre trip. There aren’t any stores, either, so bring water to drink and something to eat. There’s a nice little park for a picnic at the northwest tip of the island. One of the best things about this trip is the free, brief ferry trip to and from the island at the very end of 104th Avenue, near Surrey Bend Regional Park. The kids will love it. Meanwhile, there are many forest trails to ride along in Tynehead Park and Green Timbers Urban Forest.
For those who like to live on edge, riding hard on forested paths, the Invergarry Bike Park in North Surrey offers some outstanding cycling, as does South Surrey’s Stokes Pit at 28th Avenue off 192nd Street. The Invergarry Bike Park can be accessed from a small gravel parking lot at Wallace Drive and Surrey Road. For more details, see surrey. ca/files/Invergarry_Boards.pdf. Shopping options in Surrey Guildford Town Centre: This is the largest shopping centre located south of the Fraser River, in the heart of the Guildford area. It is strategically located at a major intersection just minutes from the Trans Canada Highway. This property has grown to 1.2 million square feet. GTC, as the shopping mall is known, offers shoppers approximately 250 retail stores. At the corner of 104th Avenue and 152nd Street. Central City Shopping Centre: Central City includes a new state-of-the-art office complex that complements an existing regional shopping centre as well as Simon Fraser University’s Surrey Campus. largest selection of South Asian shopping in the entire province. Uncover hidden treasures as you sort through beautifully tailored saris and dazzling Indian jewelry. Afterwards, feast at an authentic Indian restaurant, and indulge your sweet tooth at one of the many sweet shops. At 80th Avenue and 128th Street. Grandview Corners: One of the newer shopping destinations in
South Surrey. Catch a breath of fresh air while exploring over 70 shops, services and restaurants in this new and growing area. Stroll the village for fashion and glam, shop for deals, and meet up with friends at one of our many eateries. At 24th Avenue and 160th Street. Semiahmoo Shopping Centre: More than 75 shops and services at the corner of 152nd Street and 16th Avenue in South Surrey.

Heritage Rail rides in Surrey Every spring and summer, the cars operated by Fraser Valley Heritage Rail Society roll down a track from a station in the heart of Cloverdale to one at Sullivan – a 55-minute round trip. A restored interurban rail car is put into service for the pay-perride attraction. The BC Electric Railway, or BCER, was incorporated in 1897 in England. A Fraser Valley line was completed in 1910, and it ran
from downtown Vancouver out to Chilliwack, with stops in the Whalley, Newton, Sullivan and Cloverdale areas of Surrey. “There were up to four complete round-trip runs each day,” according to a post on the society’s website. “Carrying not only passengers, it also provided a fast method for moving freight, the mail and gossip.” Surrey’s Heritage Rail operates
on Saturday and Sunday from the beginning of May to the end of September, with five rides per day from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., plus some special events at Halloween and Christmas. In Cloverdale, the station is located at Highway 10 and 176A St., behind the Clydesdale Inn. Lights, camera, action in Surrey Surrey has become a hot spot for filming of movies, television shows and commercials. This is a film-friendly city that offers “a one-stop shop for productions, a wide array of support industries and top-notch talent,” according to the Filming in Surrey page on the City of Surrey’s website. Recent feature-film productions shot in Surrey include the Twilight series, A-Team, Blade, Juno, and Scooby Doo. TV titles include Smallville, Psych, Flash, Arrow, Supernatural and Once Upon a Time. In 2018, the plaza outside Surrey City Hall was a busy spot for filming of the DC Comics-inspired 46 | Surrey Community Guide
Elseworlds TV series, shown on the CW network. Also filmed there, in the fall of 2017, was Skyscraper, a Die Hardlike action movie starring Dwayne Johnson as a security consultant forced to rescue his family from a 240-storey building set on fire by terrorists. The film was released in theatres in the summer of 2018. In early 2018, SkyDance Media released its “Altered Carbon” Netflix series, filmed at the 75,000-square-foot studio, located in a converted newspaper printing plant at 12091 88 Ave., in Surrey’s Kennedy Heights area. The building was altered to house an entire film production,
including costume shop, set decoration, stunts, special effects, a training facility and more. Based on Richard Morgan’s 2002 cyberpunk novel, “Altered Carbon” is set 300 years in the future, “when human minds are digitized and downloaded from body to body.” In March of 2019, a real-look cabin was built in Surrey’s Joe Brown Park for four days of filming of Supernatural, the hit television show, for its 14th season. Also, the park was used the previous summer for filming of Sonic The Hedgehog, starring Jim Carrey as a villain in a live-action animated film based on the video game.
