Summer is upon us!

Summer is the time of year I look forward to as a recess – a break from responsibilities. Except when it’s not.

I find myself holding onto this idea that summer should be fantastic and fun in the sun. But there’s still work, laundry, cleaning and summer camps. The bills keep coming and the every day life still happens.

How can we enjoy summer for the respite that it is, while still living in the real world?

This issue of WestShore Family will bring some relief to the planning of summer with a few ideas like exploring the new virtual realty arcade in Langford or crafting a fairy garden with the kids.

Yes, there will still be things to be done and looked after (although maybe less if you spend weekends in bathing suits).

We still need to feed our people (but maybe relaxed means simple meals outside or more takeout). Work needs to happen, and the bills need to be paid. But when we can let some of those everyday chores slide a few extra days in these upcoming summer months you can create your best summer ever.

The calendar days continue to fly by and I’m filled with equal parts excitement and fear. Our family routines will all change in a few short weeks once the kids are out of school. Let the excitement begin!

Charred Green Beans with Lemon Verbena Pesto Serves 2 to 4

BBQ Green Beans with pesto

Green Beans 1½ pounds slender green beans 2 teaspoons olive oil Lemon Verbena Pesto 1 cup fresh lemon verbena leaves (substitute fresh lemon balm leaves) 2 garlic cloves 1⁄4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1⁄4 cup pine nuts or English walnuts 1⁄2 cup olive oil Fine kosher or sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste Prepare a hot fire in your grill.

Toss the beans with olive oil and place in a perforated grill basket or wok set on a baking sheet.

For the Lemon Verbena Pesto, combine the lemon verbena, garlic, cheese, and nuts in a food processor and pulse to puree. Slowly add the olive oil with the processor running until the mixture thickens and emulsifies, about 1 minute. Season to taste with salt and pepper. The pesto will keep in the refrigerator for 7 to 10 days, or it may be frozen for up to 3 months.

Grilled vegetables make for simple yet satisfying side dishes.

Place the grill wok or basket directly over the fire and stir-grill, tossing the beans with wooden paddles or grill spatulas until crisp-tender, about 5 to 8 minutes. Transfer the grilled beans to a large bowl and toss with about 1⁄4 cup of the Lemon Verbena Pesto or to taste.

Mommy’s Inside Voice

This story starts out just like any other love story – boy meets girl and they fall madly in love.

But that’s where the commonalities between our story and the average love story end.

My husband and I met on Plenty of Fish.

Back before Tinder, it was the muddy pond where one-night-stands were openly broadcast and relationship seekers were scoffed at. When I found a cute (read: sexy) guy who also had “looking for friendship” in his profile, I rolled the dice. One message in and we already had butterflies. We were a couple of odd ducklings in a sea of suckerfish, and somehow we had found each other.

We were living about 1,000 kilometres apart, so email and FaceTime were our cupid and bow. After a couple of months of this nuttiness, he finally decided to fly his cute butt out to see me.

Skip to a month or so later, I was packing up my single girl life and following my stud muffin out to the West Coast.

Fast forward to December 2011, I was told by my doctor that, due to various medical issues, it would be impossible for me to carry children. Approximately nine days later, I got pregnant with trouble maker number one.

We freaked out and decided to take one last babymoon – where you go somewhere that you know you won’t get a chance to go for a very long time – and he proposed.

The ring was perfection, the location was breathtaking and in the months following, I dreamt of nothing but puffy white dresses, foot popping kisses, and bratty flower girls.

I was basically a five-year-old in Barbie high heels and a Cinderella costume dress all over again.

Our little bundle of joy (read: poop) was born at the end of that summer and we were consumed with new baby life. All thoughts of wedding bells slipped through the cracks in my overwhelmed mom brain.

People would ask me if I was ready to be a mom and I would always respond with “Oh, I don’t think I’ll mind staying up all night with the baby. I’m usually up pretty late anyway.”

I was picturing snuggling up with this angelic, cooing baby while watching Friends reruns. I did not picture bouncing the baby in his car seat, strung up on his dad’s pullup bar with bungee cords, for four hours straight because it was the only place he would sleep. (Yes, that really did happen.)

When number one turned seven-monthsold I got pregnant with number two – more reassurance that doctor was getting high on her own supply.

Wedding plans hit the back burner again – and again when number two was about eight-months-old and number three came a-knockin’.

Frustration was mounting at that point.

It was time.

In a first trimester fit of tears, we finally 6 | WEST SHORE FAMILY Summer 2019

set a wedding date for the next year, when our wobbling was going to be about eightmonths-old and our other monkeys would be two and three.

We pictured a quintessential West Coast wedding, inviting our families to celebrate with us, and our midwife to perform the ceremony. Tucked into a serene cove on a private beach, we were to tie the knot inside of a beautiful open-sided structure beside a roaring fire, a lapping ocean and surrounded by a circle of our loved ones.

After our littlest gremlin was born I immediately started the dieting. I did the waist training, the “no sugar cleanse,” protein shakes, fitness classes, and those magical fat burning wraps. But my butt wasn’t getting any smaller. As the weeks ticked down to the wedding and my arm-ginas were still plump,

I started practicing posing in the mirror.

Sucking in my mommy tummy, popping out my elbows to make my chubby arms look slimmer, jutting out my hip to make my waist look more shapely. I was especially obsessed with my face. I would look at every angle, trying to memorize how exactly to stick my tongue to the roof of my mouth so that my

double chin would single out for our photos.

I had three babies worth of weight packed onto that face, arms, and tummy – and it was consuming me.

I would laugh it off when mentioning it to my friends, joke about the jiggle. But, to be honest, the pressure that I was putting on myself to “bounce back” was immense.

It’s funny how the universe works, isn’t it?

Our household was hit with a particularly nasty preschool plague just a week-and-ahalf before the wedding. We were down and out. As us mommies usually do, I shook it off better than the rest of the family – or so I thought.

About five days before the wedding, I was hit. My sinuses were so sore that I had a permanent migraine, all of the teeth along my upper jaw were throbbing and I couldn’t eat. I did everything that I could think of but nothing helped, and finally, I went to the doctor. He prescribed me two different types of antibiotics for what he called a “stubborn sinus infection.” Despite the antibiotics, I woke up three days before the wedding with a swollen face. I continued on to my hair appointment, my nail appointment, my wedding errands but by that evening I was in so much pain that I had to cancel my bachelorette party. My face had swollen out so far that my speech was significantly affected, and my left eye wouldn’t open all the way. I found myself heading to the emergency room at 4 a.m.

By that point, the swelling had extended so far that my temple was swollen. The ER doctor I saw was beyond reassuring. He deduced that it wasn’t a sinus infection after all, but a tooth abscess gone horribly wrong.

After IV antibiotics, an emergency dental surgery scheduled, and even more antibiotics, he guaranteed me it would “dry up” any remaining stuff in my face. I was trying not to think about the fact that I would be

getting married in two days and concentrate on what he was saying.

After approximately 37 minutes of nightmare sleep, I drove back in for my surgery.

The abscess was so aggressive and far along it had eaten through not only all of my gum tissue but also the bone that separated my mouth from my sinuses. The surgeon laughed when I asked if my face would be okay for the wedding.

Driving home with a wad of gauze shoved into my swollen, bleeding cheek, exhausted and in tremendous amounts of pain, I broke down on a level I never had before. I had obsessed about my double chin, chubby arms, and flabby thighs for months. It was like the universe was laughing in my face, my gigantic, pus-filled face.

I got home, filled my prescriptions for two different kinds of pain killers and antibiotics, climbed into my bed and cried.

I couldn’t postpone the damn wedding.

I was eye-to-eye with my demons – my weaknesses, my insecurities. They have done so much damage in my life. They have ruled over me, dictating the choices that I have made, every single day.

It’s depressing as hell to speak these things out loud, but that has been my inner voice for about 15 years. That voice has wasted so many opportunities, robbed so many experiences. I was about to let it ruin one of the happiest days of my life.

I had always thought that I loved myself, but in that moment I realized I never really had. If I postpone this wedding, the wedding I had waited so long for, I would be saying yet again that I’m not good enough.

I pictured myself as I wanted to be on that day. I wanted to be with the people that I love the most. I wanted to play on the beach with my babies, in my beautiful wedding dress, and kiss my new husband as the waves soaked my funky wedding shoes. I wanted to walk arm-in-arm with my dad and take in the scenery. I wanted to tear up as the love of my life read his vows to me. I wanted to

be strong, confident, and beautiful. So, I was.

It really was that simple. My options were limited, so I chose to be happy.

The wedding day was such a whirlwind.

My hair was flawless, my makeup was stunning, and my dress made me cry.

The weather was better than I could have imagined and the ceremony was hilarious.

Perfectly chaotic – interrupted less than 30 seconds in with a 3-year-old tugging on his daddy’s arm, telling him he needed to pee.

I’ve realized that I’ll never look back on that day as perfect. I will always remember feeling self-conscious, wishing my face looked normal and my smile wasn’t crooked.

I’ve also realized that none of that matters.

I was brave on that day. I conquered something and I took a huge step towards being exactly who I want to be. I didn’t feel beautiful on my wedding day, but I felt confident and worthy of all of it.

I look back on that day and I swell with pride – just thankfully, not in my cheek.

to prevent summer learning loss

Reading is one of the best ways to keep young minds fresh during summer vacations.

Summer vacation presents an opportunity for students to enjoy an extended break from the classroom. While this respite from routine may be a welcome change to youngsters, teachers frequently lament that valuable educational lessons seem to be forgotten each summer. Educators then face tougher hurdles when students return to school in the fall.

Such a phenomenon is dubbed “summer learning loss,” but it can occur during any extended break from school. Scholars have realized for some time that students’ rate of academic development declines during summer vacation. Oxford Learning, a tutoring and education training group, offers these eye-opening statistics.

• Over the summer, students tend to lose 2.6 months of math skills and two months of reading skills.

• Summer learning loss can be seen in students as young as six.

• It can take up to two months from the first day of school to get students’ brain development back on course.

Summer learning loss, sometimes called “brain drain,” can be prevented.

Proponents of year-round schooling at The National Association for Year-Round Education recommend a more balanced school year, where summer vacation lasts only 30 days and other school breaks are lengthened. In this scenario, the school year would still last about 180 days, but without the lengthy breaks.

Parents may prefer the status quo, and those who do can take several steps to prevent summer learning loss from affecting their children.

• Encourage more reading. Schools recommend summer reading lists, but students should also learn to read for pleasure. Research from the National Literary Trust indicates reading for pleasure can improve reading attainment and writing, as well as one’s general knowledge. Children can bring books to the beach that they can read between frolicking sessions in the waves.

• Enjoy family game nights. Games can be customized to highlight certain skills that require reinforcement. For example, math-centered games that require counting or addition can strengthen generalized math skills. Problem-solving board games may help children become better critical thinkers.

• Look for science moments. Trips to the seaside, parks and much more present myriad opportunities to learn about science. Children can stage their own experiments with items they find in nature, such as learning about tides, wind and water flow by sailing homemade boats.

• Teach kids through daily tasks. Barbecuing, making a cake, building a raised garden bed, seeding the lawn — each of these moments present educational opportunities for parents who want to keep their kids’ minds sharp during summer.

Children need not fall victim to summer learning loss when their days are filled with educational but fun activities.

Imagine the reading possibilities BC Summer Reading Club is back at the Greater Victoria Public Library The Greater Victoria Public Library offers free library programs at branches throughout Greater Victoria. These programs include crafts, coding, science and story time – there’s something for all ages and interests.

Just imagine the possibilities with the Greater Victoria Public Library’s BC Summer Reading Club. Whether reading at home or on holidays, kids 12 and under can track their daily reading and enjoy weekly incentives along the way. All summer long, drop by any GVPL library branch to pick up a self-paced reading record. (Find out more at gvpl.ca/src.)

Some other programs of interest include the Once Upon a StoryWalk®. This program is open to everyone but children must be accompanied by an adult. Individual pages of a storybook are mounted on sign posts and placed along an outdoor circuit at the Juan de Fuca branch. Participants follow the narrative by visiting each page in sequence along the route.

After the story, drop into the branch for a fun craft. This program is drop-in and

runs on July 4 and Aug. 2 from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., rain or shine.

Another popular program is Paws and Tales for ages six to nine. Participants read to a friendly dog and learn more about dogs who assist people and how to be a great dog owner. Led by volunteers and their furry companions from Pacific Animal Therapy Society’s Paws and Tales program, registration is required. This program runs at the Juan de Fuca branch on July 16 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Giggles and Wiggles is for young children and their families. Little listeners with extra energy will enjoy action-filled stories, songs and rhymes followed by free play and stations. This is a drop-in program, but children under three must be accompanied by an adult. It runs on July 22 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Flight of the Falcon is for children between the ages of six to 12 but parents are also welcome. Join falconers Kristine and Allan Marshall, along with their gyrfalcon, Solstice, and American kestrel, Jack, and

learn about the ways of these exquisite raptors and the 4,000-year-old art of falconry.

Registration is required and this program runs out of the Langford Heritage branch on Aug. 24, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Imagine the Possibilities Magic Show also runs on Aug. 24 but out of the Juan de Fuca Branch at 3 p.m.

Step into a world of imagination where anything is possible. Watch as drawings come to life, pictures leap off the page from popular children’s books and toys misbehave with hilarious surprises. This show features magic, comedy, music and tons of audience participation. Presented by magician Leif David, this show is for ages five to 12 and registration is required.

Summer Craft!

6 STEPS to creating fairy gardens for kids

Adding a touch of whimsy to gardening can make it that much more attractive to children. Perhaps that is why fairy gardens have become so popular among youngsters.

Fairy gardens can be designed in outdoor gardens or in containers that children can nurse and enjoy indoors.

Here are six steps to get your fairy garden up and running.

1. Choose your container or location. Decide where to place the fairy garden. Hollowed-out tree stumps are both contained and outdoors, and kids may feel like the fairies inhabited this neglected area of the yard and made it their own. Otherwise, use containers you already have, such as old pots, hanging baskets, picnic baskets or cookie tins. Wooden birdhouses with their roofs removed also can make for clever places to house the gardens.

2. Choose a theme. Fairy houses can take on any theme their creators prefer. Themes help children decide what to include in their gardens. For example, a seaside retreat may work well with little reclining chairs, sea grasses and succulents. You can then complete the theme by adding some seashells and colored stones.

3. Draw up your design. Before securing anything in the container or digging into your garden bed, sketch out a garden design. This gives you an idea of how the finished product will look. Even before planting, gently place plants and other components in their spots and move them around accordingly until you find the desired look.

4. Include similar-needs plants. Mixing plants that have different requirements can make it challenging to care for the fairy garden, so select plants that require similar levels of sunlight, prefer similar soil conditions and require roughly the same amount of watering. Herbs are a smart choice because they stay small and are easily maintained.

5. Don’t forget a fairy dwelling. You will need to add a house for the fairies to inhabit. Small bird houses can work, but you also can consider old teapots, bird-nesting boxes or even homemade houses assembled out of bark and twigs. Use your imagination and the garden will take on a life of its own.

6. Invite the fairies. Children can invite fairies to take up residence (fairies often show up at night and tend to remain unseen), or children can create their own fairies using craft materials.

Fairy gardens are a fun way to introduce children to gardeing.

Once families get started, they may want to create entire fairy villages.

Have you noticed that since you’ve mentioned you and your partner are separating that everyone and their dog suddenly seems to know EXACTLY WHAT YOU SHOULD DO?!

I hear it in conversations and see it online all the time.

It usually starts with “You know what you should do?”

Followed by the answer to what is clearly a rhetorical question because they already have the answer for you.

All of this advice is well-intentioned. People just want to help you get through this. The problem with a lot of the advice is that it is inaccurate or doesn’t apply to your situation. On top of that, the information is coming from the perspective of that person’s life experience. Maybe they had a really difficult separation and they still harbour a lot of negative feelings about it. Or maybe they went through a relatively amicable split and everything was quick and easy.

The point is that your situation is unique. When figuring out what to do you need to look at what is important to you. What are your goals? What do you need when all

When I’m working with clients we really focus on identifying needs. I do this by helping them look to the future. What do you want the future to look like? And with that in mind, what decisions and agreements do you need to make now to make that happen?

It’s easy, and very normal in these situations, to get bogged down in rehashing the past. You can probably come up with a list of a million reasons why you’re right and your ex-partner is wrong. And I can guarantee your ex has a list just as long. But that kind of thinking isn’t going to get you anywhere. And ultimately, both you and your kids will pay the price now and in the future for decisions that were made out of fear, anger and bad advice.

So thank your friends and family for their well-meaning suggestions. And then put it aside and figure out what YOU need in your specific situation based on your values, hopes and dreams…not theirs.

‘You can be on the Titanic, petting giraffes in Africa… killing zombies or be chased by dinosaurs’ Rick Stiebel / News Staff If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to travel into space or tour the pyramids, on foot or from high above, look no further than a nondescript little storefront on Granderson Avenue in Langford.

An amazing array of experiences awaits once you step inside Flynn’s Virtual Reality, the first arcade of its kind on the West Shore.

“You can be on the Titanic, petting giraffes in Africa, hang gliding, dancing, killing zombies or be chased by dinosaurs,” said Scott Wright, owner of Flynn’s Virtual Reality, which first opened its virtually limitless doors in February.” We have more than 100 options, including many for people not into science fiction or flying through the air as a fire-breathing dragon. You can play a sport, take a roller coaster ride or walk through a haunted house. You name it, there’s really nothing you can’t do.

Anyone from six and up can enjoy the experience.”

There’s a number of things that sets VR apart from regular video games, Wright noted. “Here, you’re standing up strengthening your core and using your muscles, compared to being hunched over a playing a video game. VR burns 10 calories a minute on average. It also levels the playing field for parents and their kids who’ve grown up gaming. There’s only two handheld controls

that don’t require any prior knowledge of how the game works.

You just put on your helmet and off you go.”

Wright has had several caregivers of autistic children come in already because they view it as a learning tool. “You can cure phobias for instance,” he explained. “If you’re afraid of spiders, for example, you go to VR and put some on your arms.”

Although simulators have been around since the 1920s when the British and Americans first started using them to train pilots, it wasn’t until the early 1960s that the experience reached a point where you could alter what was going on, Wright noted.

Although the VR experience went public in the 1980s, it was hardware dependent, required a full booth and lots of expensive equipment. “It was priced out of reach and the powers that be did a terrible job of marketing,” he said. “It really took off when software became boss around 1998 to 2000. Developers around the world could start creating their own world. A little team of six guys in Estonia could produce amazing things. The market is now open to smaller firms, and that’s what brought the price down.”

Flynn’s Virtual Reality costs $25 for one hour, and customers can include as many experiences as they want in that time frame.

“We had 11 11-year-old girls in for a birthday party recently and they were dancing, doing art…they had the time of their lives.”

The arcade is open from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Sessions are booked online at flynnsvr.ca/playnow.

If you don’t have time to venture too far out of city limits, there are a number of great local camping options that allow you to take a break without travelling or venturing over the Malahat.

One of the closest options to the West Shore is Goldstream Provincial Park, conveniently located in Langford. There are 159 campsites at Goldstream with some large sites available to accommodate large groups. Campsite reservations are accepted and some sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Also located on the West Shore are the oTENTiks available to rent at the Fort Rodd Hill National Historic Site in Colwood. While these structures aren’t exactly roughing it, they do offer a unique perspective of the site after dark and allow visitors some modern luxuries.

Often referred to as Vancouver Island’s best kept RV secret, Weir’s Beach RV Resort in Metchosin is a year-round destination for the entire family. This family-oriented site has beach frontage and provides an escape with magnificent sunrises, the moon glowing over the water and the twinkling lights of Victoria.

Not too far from the West Shore, there are also several options in Sooke and there are lots of great places to camp on the Saanich Peninsula.

If all else fails, set up a tent in the backyard and send the kids out for an adventure under the stars.

B.C. SPCA reminds public to travel safely with pets this summer News Staff The BC SPCA is reminding members of the public to make sure pets are safely secured in their vehicle when travelling this summer.

Unrestrained pets are a major distraction to drivers, and can cause collisions. In a crash, pets become flying projectiles and can injure themselves, the driver and passengers. Dogs restrained in the back of trucks with loose ropes or ties can accidentally hang themselves.

Depending on the weather, exposing your pet to the elements can also lead to heatstroke or hypothermia.

“This time of year [summer] we start to see more people taking their pets, particularly dogs, with them on road trips or camping. We recommend that pets are kept inside the vehicle in a secured crate or restrained with a dog seatbelt,” said Lorie Chortyk, SPCA’s general manager of communications.

Dogs can also be secured using short leads that are cross-tied to the animal’s harness.

It is against the law to transport an unsecured pet in the back of a pick-up truck under Section 72 of the B.C. Motor Vehicle Act and Section 9.3 of the B.C. Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Unsecured dogs often fall out of the truck resulting in severe injuries, death and endangering nearby motorists. “If you see a dog that is unattached in the back of a pick-up truck call 911 to report the license plate number, make and model of the vehicle and provide a description of the dog,” said Chortyk.

To help keep roads safer for pets and people this summer, people are encouraged to keep pets secured inside vehicles and are asked to report sightings of any unsecured pets.

Parents thinking ahead to swimming pools and days lounging on the beach can put their daydreams to practical use by planning ahead for their youngsters’ summer vacations.

Youth recreational programs and summer camps can bridge the gap in care between the end of school and the day when classes resume. Due in part to high demand, parents who want to place their kids in summer rec programs or summer camps should being vetting such programs and camps well in advance of summer. The following are a handful of tips for moms and dads who want their kids to have fun and fulfilling summers.

• Ask for recommendations. Speak with fellow parents and trusted friends about where they send their children.

Personal recommendations can be very helpful, providing firsthand insight into a particular camp or program.

Schedule appointments to visit camps that fall within your budget. Take your son or daughter along so he or she can get a sense of what camp will be like.

• Explore all options. Camps come in more flavors than ever before. Certain camps may be faith-based ministries while others may focus on particular sports. Band camps and art camps may appeal to creative kids. Also, there are plenty of general-interest camps that offer various activities without narrowing in on any particular one. Parents may need to choose between a sleepaway camp or day camps,

depending on which camp experience they want for their children.

• Inquire about camp schedules. While many camps are flexible, day camps do not have the same level of flexibility as after-school programs. Arrangements will need to be made if care is required after regular camp hours. Speak with camp staff to see which types of after-hours programs, if any, are available.

• Determine your camp budget. As varied as program offerings may be, camps also can vary greatly with regard to cost. Government-run camps may be less expensive than those offered by private companies. Day camps typically cost less than those that provide room and board. Find out if a particular organization subsidizes a portion of camp costs. Scouting programs often have a dedicated camp and may offer affordable options for scouts. Martial arts schools and dance centers frequently offer camp schedules.

If camp seems out of reach, look into local summer recreation programs at parks or schools. Such programs may not be as extensive as those offered by camps, but they can quell kids’ boredom and keep children occupied during the day.

In addition to camp, remember to plan for some free days so children can just enjoy some downtime. Such days can break up the monotony of a routine and provide kids and families time to relax together.

Summer recreation may be far off, but it is never too early to start making summer plans, including finding camps and other activities for kids.

While the dinner table might be where families catch up and share stories of their day, breaking bread at breakfast time can be just as enjoyable. That’s especially true when families take the time to create homemade breakfasts, such as the following recipe for “Orange Whole-Wheat Waffles with Yogurt and Fresh Berries” from Susie Cushner’s “Sunday Brunch” (Chronicle Books).

Orange Whole-Wheat Waffles with Yogurt & Fresh Berries Makes about 6 5- to 6-inch waffles Serves 4 to 6

Orange Whole-Wheat Waffles 2¼ cups white whole-wheat flour 3 tablespoons sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder ¼ teaspoon salt 1¼ cups whole milk ½ cup freshly squeezed orange juice 2 eggs, separated 5 teaspoons packed, grated orange zest 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled Yogurt topping 1 cup Greek-style yogurt (see note) 4 teaspoons honey 1 teaspoon grated orange zest, packed Fresh raspberries, strawberries or blueberries, for garnish For the Orange Whole-Wheat Waffles: Preheat a waffle iron (and, if you plan to hold the waffles until serving time, preheat the oven to 200 F).

2. In a large serving bowl, stir together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, whisk together the milk, orange juice, egg yolks, and orange zest. In a third bowl, beat the egg whites until firm, but not stiff.

3. Make a well in the dry ingredients and pour in the milk mixture, blending gently only until the ingredients are combined.

Add the butter in a slow stream, continuing to blend until the butter is incorporated. Gently fold in the egg whites.

4. For the yogurt topping: In a small serving bowl, whisk together the yogurt, honey and orange zest.

5. Pour 1⁄2 cup of the batter (or more, depending on the size of your waffle iron) onto the waffle iron and, using a metal spatula or table knife, spread the batter to within 1⁄2 inch of the edge. Close the cover and cook approximately 3 minutes, or until crisp and golden brown. (If your waffles aren’t crisp, even after a “ready” signal has sounded, continue to cook them, watching carefully, until crisp and golden. If not serving immediately, place the waffles in a single layer on a baking sheet in the preheated oven while you finish with the remaining batter.)

6. Serve the waffles topped with a generous dollop of the yogurt mixture and garnish with some berries.

Note: Nonfat, as well as reduced- to whole-fat varieties of Greek yogurt work in this recipe.

Motorcycle deaths in B.C. jumped 50 per cent between 2017 and 2018, a B.C. Coroners report has found. Data shows there were 51 motorcycle deaths in 2018, up from 34 the year prior.

Riders were most likely to fatally crash on the weekends compared with the rest of the week. They were also more likely to die in the summer months, with only four per cent of deaths occurring in the winter.

Over the past 10 years, 56 per cent of all motorcycle deaths happened over three summer months. In 2018, this translated to eight people dying in June, 19 in July and 10 in August.

The report found 91 per cent of motorcyclists killed were male, echoing a report released in May that found 69 per cent of all car crash victims were men.

Fraser Health saw the most motorcyclist deaths at 17 in 2018, followed by Interior Health at 16 and Island Health at 13.

Northern Health and Vancouver Coastal Health saw just three and two deaths last year, respectively.

Premier John Horgan called the spike in gas prices ‘alarming’ Katya Slepian / News Staff Oil companies will have to explain their gas prices as part of an investigation into B.C.’s soaring costs at the pump, the province says.

In a news release, the province said the probe will include “compelling oil companies as witnesses to explain their prices to the commission.”

Premier John Horgan had initially called for the investigation in a May 7 letter to the B.C. Utilities Commission. In it, Horgan asked for the commission to find out why wholesale – and pre-tax – prices are

24 cents higher in Vancouver than they are in Edmonton.

“British Columbians want to know why refining margins are so much higher than in other parts of the country,” Horgan wrote.

“In March 2019, refining margins for Vancouver were more than double the Canadian average.”

The release said the commission will investigate fluctuations in gas prices, possible price fixing and gouging, as well

Staying Cool and Considerate When Circumstances Get Us Heated Special to The Gazette by Drs Dialogue, Advertising feature

It’s that time of year again when summer schedules mean people lose their patience with: • Highway construction • Gas prices • Music festivals & patrons • Ferry Lineups • Noisy BBQ’s & bonfires • Water restrictions • Finding parking • Soaring temperature • Traffic delays Seemingly small irritants can have our blood boiling in seconds, especially if we’re already overheated. We may do or say things we would not normally say and act in ways that seem to escalate conflict. Remaining as calm as possible will lead to more productive outcomes.

For many people, the idea of conflict resolution is to over-power the other in order to ‘win’. Many Canadian social institutions decide important issues on the basis of who holds the power.

Positions When we are having a disagreement, we often decide what the outcome should be before we have even talked to the other side. This win/lose outcome usually reflects only what appears to be best for us; it is called a ‘position’. Rather than both sides arguing for their position, it can be more effective to consider the interests of those involved.

Interests are the values, needs, wants, and dreams that are important to us as individuals. Interests are ‘why’ we want what we want; they are the reasons for our position. Interests may be ‘hard’ such as parking spaces, food, shelter or safety; or ‘soft’ such as recognition, approval or control. Remember, interests are always positive and considering them can create a win/win outcome.

When we are experiencing conflict, thinking about the interests of the other person can help to shift discussion of the problem toward a mutually satisfying solution. Why does this matter to them?

If the parties in a dispute can get clear on their underlying interests, it’s possible to find common ground. Focusing on how to work together to meet these common interests leads to mutually agreeable solutions. This can help both parties achieve their goals.

In this way the “power to decide” is shared and it grows, correcting power imbalance.

Step 1: Set the tone for success • Invite the other person to have a conversation • Let them know their concerns matter to you and assure them you only want to create solutions • Make a list of issues (topics) to talk about, and talk about them one at a time Step 2: Don’t look for solutions yet!!! Listen, Listen, Listen… listening encourages the other to listen to you!

Then, clarify what you heard.

• Ask open ended questions (who, what, when, where…?)

• Empathize & acknowledge the other’s feelings • Paraphrase or say back what you heard in your own words

• Reframe—identify what is most important to the other person Step 3: Still no solutions!! Assert. Now it’s your turn!

• Acknowledge what’s positive about the person or situation • Describe the situation neutrally from your point of view • Express the impact on the situation • Specify what you would like to happen • Consequences—what are the positive consequences that could follow?

Step 4: Brainstorm Now solutions!

Work together to list as many solution ideas as possible. Encourage creativity by waiting until you have several ideas before deciding if they are “good” or “bad”.

Once you have a good list of ideas, edit and choose those that are the best for this situation.

Looking at grief causing issues from a single perspective can be extremely limiting. Choosing to look at what else may be going on for the other person, will increase your understanding and provide greater possibilities for reaching a peaceful resolution.

Stay curious and you can successfully navigate conflict no matter what the temperature!
