Always a popular event, the White Rock Farmers' Market runs weekly throughout the spring and summer months.
Farmers' market marks 20 years White Rock Farmers’ Market, which has been connecting customers with local produce for the past 20 years, was welcomed back to the Miramar Plaza at the beginning of May with a community celebration. The market has long been known as not only a place to browse the wares and products of local farmers and artists, but as a community hub, where residents and visitors alike often run into familiar faces. The market – which runs every Sunday near the corner of Russell Avenue and Johnston Road – was officially opened for the season May 5 with a ribbon-cutting celebration hosted by local municipal, provincial and federal politicians. The weekly market, which will operate until the end of October, features a list of more than 70 vendors. Named the Best Large Market in B.C.
in 2015, White Rock Farmers’ Market draws hundreds of people each week to listen to music and shop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The market features live music from different artists every week, and there are five “Special Event Days” hosted throughout summer, including the market’s opening day. Upcoming special events include an annual Pie Contest Day on July 21, a Kids Day on Aug. 11, the Mary Hartwell Scholarship Day on Aug. 25 and the special Thank Your Farmers Day on Sept. 15.

According to the White Rock Farmers’ Market website (whiterockfarmersmarket.ca), the market serves as a place where locals can learn about healthy food, connect with friends and neighbours, and is a celebration of community and the bounty of the land. “People come to farmers’ markets week after week for many reasons, including the community gathering experience, the opportunity to talk directly to farmers, and the reassurance that they are eating nutritious and ethically sourced food,” the website states. An additional draw to the market this year is the newly relocated 3 Dogs Brewing craft beer brewhouse, which now features an outdoor patio space. White Rock Beach Beer Company and 3 Dogs Brewing are both located within the same block as the market.
Discover schools in the community Along with a fast-growing menu of residential and commercial development, the Semiahmoo Peninsula has much on the go when it comes to education spaces. New schools on the horizon include the long-planned Grandview Heights Secondary, which is under construction at 16988 25 Ave., behind the Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre; Edgewood Drive Elementary, slated to open in September 2021 in the 16600-block of 23 Avenue; and, St. John Paul II Academy, anticipated to open for the 2021-2022 school year on 10 acres in the 18200-block of 24 Avenue. Officials are hopeful Grandview Heights Secondary, with room for 1,500, will open during the 2020-21 school year. Ground was broken – symbolically, at least – for the new elementary school in February, and the $33 million school is slated to open in September 2021. Expansion efforts at Pacific Heights Elementary, at 17148 26 Ave., also got underway this year, with the launch of a 12-classroom addition. A capital campaign for the $55 million St. John Paul II Academy is well underway. Currently operating in temporary space in White Rock’s Five Corners District, officials say the new facility will be the first Catholic high school to be built in Surrey in 25 years. And there is more to come for the future of education in Surrey, including a new elementary school in the bustling Sunnyside neighbourhood. Funding in the amount of $28.95 million was announced last year, for land at the southeast corner of 20 Avenue and 165 Street. Currently, the South Surrey and White Rock area is home to three public high schools (Elgin, Earl Marriott and Semiahmoo secondaries), three private high schools (St. John Paul II Academy, Southridge School and White Rock
Christian Academy), nearly two dozen elementary schools, the South Surrey/White Rock Learning Centre and Eaton Arrowsmith School.

If you’re looking for a sports fix this summer, look no further than South Surrey, White Rock and Cloverdale – busy, sports-rich communities that are set to host all types of action this year to keep sports fans busy and entertained. Though the sports fields, gyms and arena on the Semiahmoo Peninsula – and across the south-end of Surrey in general – are busy 12 months a year, the summer is an especially busy time. Normally highlighted by two premier events – the two-day Tour de White Rock cycling series and the Canada Cup softball tournament – this year features not just those two annual traditions, but also a third high-level tournament: the 2019 Americas Softball Olympic Qualifier. The women’s fastpitch tournament – set to run Aug. 25-Sept. 1 – will

The White Rock Tritons – which field baseball teams at the U18, U16 and U15 levels – play throughout the spring and summer. see national teams from a dozen countries, including Canada, vying for two berths in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Japan. That event will mark the Canadian national team’s second trip to South Surrey in as many months, as the squad will also be front-and-centre at the Canada Cup tournament, which this year is scheduled for July 5-14. Canada Cup action takes place at three parks – Softball City, Sunnyside Park and Cloverdale Athletic Park – and features some of the world’s top international and youth teams. The Canada Cup originally ran from 1993 until 2010, at which point it gave way to the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championships, which were similar but drew fewer top-end international teams and instead focused more on youth squads. The current incarnation of the Canada Cup is in its third year; it was reborn after the 2016 Women’s World Softball Championships, which were held in Surrey. For information, visit www.canadacup. com
The Tour de White Rock also returns to White Rock streets this July. The event – which is part of the multi-race BC Superweek Cycling Series – makes its annual stop in the seaside city July 13-14. The criterium – a multi-lap short course race – hits the roads of White Rock’s uptown neighbourhood on the first day of action, followed the next morning by the road race. In the criterium, cyclists pedal around a short, one-kilometre course that includes Johnston Road, Five Corners, White Rock City Hall and White Rock Elementary. The
criterium races are among the most exciting of the weekend, as riders reach speeds up to 70 km/h, and are all in close proximity to one another. The Saturday action begins at 2:30 p.m. with the opening of the Family Fun Zone, kid’s bike parade and youth bike race, and the criterium races begin at 4 p.m. The Tour de White Rock's road race, set for Sunday morning, features a 130-km distance for the men and an 80-km distance for the women's race. Hundreds of riders will take part, pedalling along Marine Drive before traversing a gruelling course full of long climbs, tight turns and beautiful oceanfront scenery. Lawnbowling, rugby and more currently in full swing and will be playing throughout the summer, while the baseball diamonds are full of White Rock-South Surrey Baseball Association clubs, highlighted by the BC Premier Baseball League’s under-18 White Rock Tritons, as well as the U16 Junior Tritons, and U15 prep-level Tritons. Local pools, the Grandview Aquatic Centre (16855 24 Ave.) and the South Surrey Indoor Pool (14655 17 Ave.), are always a hub of activity, as local swim and dive clubs – including the Pacific Sea Wolves, White Rock Divers, White Rock Amateur Swim Association, White Rock Wave masters swim club and the Crescent Beach Swimming Club – stay busy in the water. Lawnbowling is also a big draw on the Peninsula, with two clubs – the White Rock Lawn Bowling Club (1079 Dolphin St.) and the

Mann Park Lawn Bowling Club (14560 North Bluff Rd.) – hosting members and guests for daily games, tournaments and other events throughout the spring and summer months. And if you'd rather play a sport than watch, the South Surrey Recreation Centre is a buzz of activity, while the Kent Street Activity Centre

As summer ends and the leaves on the trees begin to turn fall colours, the White Rock-South Surrey Titans football association hits the field at South Surrey Athletic Park, while Earl Marriott, Sullivan Heights and Lord Tweedsmuir secondaries also field teams at their respective schools. Rugby is also one of the most popular sports on the Semiahmoo Peninsula, with the local Bayside Sharks Rugby Club fielding various teams, from youngsters (mini rugby) to both men's and women's teams. Earlier this spring, the Sharks’ top men’s team captured a BC Rugby Union Div. 1 championship. A long-awaited Bayside Rugby clubhouse is also currently under

construction at South Surrey Athletic Park. The Semiahmoo Old Boys rugby team – for men's players 38-andabove – are also a big part of the local scene, and also play out of South Surrey Athletic Park. Soccer also picks up in the fall, as the South Surrey/White Rock-based Coastal FC – one of the biggest youth soccer clubs in the province – has its teams take to the field. In addition to a bevy of soccer fields scattered across the city – including many at South Surrey Athletic Park – the club is also currently building an indoor training facility at the athletic park. At local hockey rinks – South Surrey Arena (2199 148 St.), Centennial Arena (14600 North Bluff Rd.) and Cloverdale Arena (6090 176 St.) – minor-hockey players will lace up their skates from the fall until next spring. The BC Hockey League's Surrey Eagles are a major draw at South Surrey Arena, and this season will be playing under the leadership of new head coach Cam Keith. The team plays out of White Rock’s Centennial Arena and is owned by longtime Semiahmoo Peninsula businessman Ronnie Paterson. The area’s other main wintertime sport – curling – is also as popular in the area as ever. Canada's national women's softball team will be among a dozen teams vying for a spot at the 2020 Olympics in August.
Olympic qualifier set for Surrey Since the inception of the Canada Cup softball tournament in the early 1990s, Semiahmoo Peninsula softball fans have seen many Olympic-calibre players come through town. However, considering softball was axed as an Olympic sport after the 2008 Games in Beijing, it’s been more than a decade since any of those players actually got the chance to compete on the world’s biggest athletic stage. That will change next year, as softball and baseball have been reinstated for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo – and action that takes place in Surrey this year will help determine which countries get the chance to compete. Earlier this year, the City of Surrey was named the host city for the 2019 Americas Olympic Qualifier tournament. The event – set to run at Softball City from Aug. 25-Sept. 1 – will see 12 teams compete for two berths in the 2020 Games. In comparison to the Canada Cup – which features both international and youth teams from across the globe – tournament chair Greg Timm described the qualifier succinctly: “Smaller tournament, higher stakes.” 20 ArchNews News• DISCOVER • DISCOVERTHE THEPENINSULA PENINSULA• 2019 • 2019 20 Peace Peace Arch
Canada will no doubt be the fan favourites when the first pitch is thrown in August, and they’ll be joined in the tournament’s Group A by Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Cuba, Guatemala and Argentina. Group B includes Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, British Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic. Canada will play its pool-round games each night at 6 p.m. The United States – the No. 1-ranked team in the world – will not be part of the tournament, as they have already qualified for the Olympics by virtue of winning last summer’s world championships. Canada – the No. 3-ranked team in the world, behind the U.S. and Japan – will be led this summer by a handful of players with ties to the Surrey/White Rock area. Two of Canada’s pitchers, Sara Groenewegen and Danielle Laurie-Locke, are former members of the White Rock Renegades, while Surrey’s Holly Speers is one of the team’s most reliable offensive players. Bayview Park 14586 Marine Dr. (at Bay Street). Located at the west end of White Rock’s popular promenade, this is a perfect site for an outdoor meal with the family. Pack a picnic basket, spread out a blanket and enjoy.
Bob Rutledge Park 5448 148 St. Play some tennis or have a picnic in this 2.8-hectare Panorama-area park. Located south of Highway 10, it also features a playground and nature trails.
Bryant Park 15150 Russell Ave. Picnic tables and a meandering walkway make Bryant Park one of White Rock’s hidden jewels. The park is also dog-friendly, provided the family pet is leashed.
Centennial Park/Ruth Johnson Park 14600 North Bluff Rd. White Rock’s largest park offers amenities including tennis courts, baseball and soccer fields, an off-leash dog area, a horseshoe pitch and a running oval. There are also shaded forest trails, for a more serene experience, as well as the new Generations Playground, an

Cloverdale Athletic Park 6330 168 St. This 20-plus hectare park offers sports fields, playgrounds, a water park, a bike park, picnic area, washrooms, ball diamonds, games court, lacrosse box, tennis courts and walking paths.
Crescent Park 2610 128 St. This park offers sports fields, baseball diamonds, fitness track, picnic areas, playgrounds, trails and tennis courts. Small ponds on the west side are a draw for ducks.
Darts Hill Garden Park 1633 170 St. Gifted to the City of Surrey by Francisca and Edwin Darts, this gem showcases an array of botanical and unusual plant life. Open to the public on specified dates April through July. Photography is encouraged. Due to the garden’s sensitivity, dogs are not allowed, and visitors are asked to remain on designated walking paths. Wheelchair access is limited.

Dr. R.J. Allan Hogg Rotary Park 15400-block of Buena Vista Avenue. Stretching between White Rock’s Roper and Buena Vista avenues, this park offers more than two acres of beautifully landscaped green space and gardens.
Glades Garden Park 561 172 St. This park boasts more than 1,600 mature rhododendrons, azaleas and more. Gifted to the city by Jim and Eldfriede DeWolf, improvements have included a new parking lot, fencing and new trails.
Totem Park Marine Drive and Cypress Street. One of the most popular spots on Marine Drive’s East Beach, the plaza, located on traditional homelands of the Semiahmoo First Nation, is best known for its two totem poles. Designed by Haida artist Robert Davidson and Coast Salish artist Susan Point, the poles were raised in 1999. Ten years later, the plaza was dedicated to the memory of SFN Grand Chief Bernard Robert Charles.
Memorial Park 15000-block Marine Drive. Recent upgrades to this waterfront space include improved accessibility, a splash-zone, plaza space and more.
White Rock Promenade Marine Drive between Maple Street and Bay Street. With an ocean view, the wheelchair-accessible promenade stretches 2.2 kilometres on White Rock Beach. Keep in mind that biking, inline skating, skateboarding and smoking are prohibited on the pier and promenade, as are dogs (a one-year trial to permit leashed dogs on the promenade begins Oct. 1).
Peace Arch Elementary Park 15877 Roper Ave. This park features a wheelchair-accessible playground. The fields are ideal for an afternoon of sports.
Sunnyside Park 15455 26 Ave. This park is a great place to take the kids, especially during the softball season when the diamonds are full of teams. The park also hosts an outdoor pool, which opened mid-May, playgrounds, picnic areas, a soccer field and tennis courts.

Dogwood Park
17900 20 Ave. This 32-hectare park was the site of a tree farm established by the Browns, one of the Peninsula’s pioneer families. In addition to a playground and sheltered picnic areas, the park features hiking trails and the largest stand of redwood trees north of California.
13485 20 Ave. A mainly natural area, this site is home to a partly fenced off-leash dog area and nature trails. It connects with Chantrell Park, Bridlewood Park and Huntington Park, and is a natural extension of the Sunnyside Acres Urban Forest.
Duprez Ravine in White Rock’s Centennial Park 14600 North Bluff Rd. This park is a popular destination for fitness enthusiasts, offering a partially staired path that leads through the forest, along a creek to Marine Drive.
Elgin Heritage Park Crescent Road at 137 Street. With 16 hectares of undeveloped parkland and home to Historic Stewart Farm, this jewel along the Nicomekl River is a great destination for those looking for a scenic walk.
Kwomais Point Park 1367 128 St. Perched atop the bluffs above Semiahmoo Bay, this park has walking paths and stunning views.

Mud Bay Park
12601 64 Ave. This park features two artificial turf fields, ball diamonds and more. If you’re interested in exploring the environment while stretching your legs, there are a handful of spots that offer scenic and challenging trails.
13030 48 Ave. This park includes a nearly three-kilometre nature trail that offers a scenic opportunity to view some of the hundreds of thousands of shorebirds. Visitors can take their explorations even further, by continuing along the Dyke Trail – 20 kilometres of shoreline – to Boundary Bay Regional Park in Delta. Note: dogs, bikes and horses are not permitted from fall to early spring.
Blackie Spit 3136 McBride Ave. Popular amongst bird-watchers, this park also features a fenced off-leash dog area and dog beach, a picnic area, washrooms and walking paths.

Semiahmoo Trail This gem was first used during the Gold Rush and was later established by European settlers, becoming the main wagon route between Blaine and Fort Langley. Listed on the Canadian Register of Historic Places, the eight-kilometre South Surrey stretch of the trail runs from the Nicomekl River south to 20 Avenue. Start from 20 Avenue at 151A Street and head north, or from 144 Street at Crescent Road and head south.
Serpentine Fen Nature Reserve 4600-block of King George Boulevard. Managed by the B.C. Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks, this spot is great for exploring habitats for waterfowl. It includes bird-watching towers and trails.
Sunnyside Acres Urban Forest 2598 144 St. Take a walk through this second-growth forest abundant in giant hemlock, cedar and spruce. The woods are home to a collection of wildlife – from birds and coyotes to black-tailed deer. It was declared an ‘urban forest’ in 1988.
1001 Steps 12500-block of 16 Avenue. Tucked away behind Ocean Park, this spot features trails and a staircase that ends at the waterfront of Crescent Beach. Also check out 101 steps, at the foot of 24 Avenue, which has access to the waterfront.

Area is a hive of artistic talent Ever since the era of pioneer settlement in the late 1800s and early 1900s, residents of the Semiahmoo Peninsula have shown a keen interest in encouraging home-grown arts and entertainment, as well as providing an eager audience for touring shows and entertainers. Both the City of White Rock and the City of Surrey support cultural development in the area – and there are plenty of opportunities to get involved, either as a spectator or a participant. City of White Rock initiatives include the Landmark Pop-Uptown Gallery at Central Plaza (15140 North Bluff Rd.) and multicultural events in the uptown area, including ongoing art shows at the White Rock Community Centre at Miramar Village (15154 Russell Ave.), a planned Faerie festival on June 23, and – at the waterfront – the TD Concerts for the Pier series in July and August, the White Rock Sea Festival in August, the Moon Festival in September, and the promised return of a Multicultural Integration Festival coinciding with the traditional celebration of Diwali in October. The local arts council, Semiahmoo Arts (www.semiahmooarts.com), has an important role as umbrella organization with a presence in both cities – including a gallery and multi-purpose space, pottery studio and a head office at the South Surrey Recreation and Arts Centre. Coming up, Semiahmoo Arts will partner with the City of Surrey for the eighth annual South Surrey Festival, Saturday, July 27, which is billed as a fun, family-friendly event.

The club traces its history back to a group of theatre-obsessed Surrey district school teachers who started with play readings but began to present full productions in 1944. From these modest beginnings the club grew in size and artistic ambition until in 1958, it helped put the newly-incorporated City of White Rock on the map by being named the top amateur group in Canada in the Dominion Drama Festival. In addition to a celebrated annual Christmas pantomime, the club presents four plays each year. The club’s final production of this season, Neil Simon’s 1950s-era comedy Laughter on the 23rd Floor, will run June 12 to 29, with a new season of productions – yet to be announced – starting in October. Concert series to benefit pier The series used to be known as TD Concerts at the Pier. But now, as fundraising efforts for White Rock’s beloved icon – seriously damaged in a windstorm in December – intensify, it makes more sense to call it the TD Concerts for the Pier series. The popular free public concerts – which combine big-name attractions and nostalgic tribute groups with local performers who have more than paid their dues – are back for another season starting July 4, copresented by the BIA, the City of White Rock and major sponsor TD Canada Trust. Topping the bill are some legendary Canadian acts with just as much recognition value as the pier itself – even though the concerts are still free, co-organizers the White Rock BIA are hoping that people will be moved by the music to kick in donations to help repair the 104-year-old structure. In the forefront of this year’s line-up are rock bands Crash Test Dummies and Prism, and equally well-known blues and jazz vocalist, guitarist and actor Jim Byrnes, in what BIA executive director Alex Nixon is calling the “best ever” season. The new TD Concerts for the Pier name also makes sense, Nixon said, given that delayed redevelopment of Memorial Park moved the season to other White Rock locations. That only reconfirmed the validity of the previously-established Five Corners venue, he said, while demonstrating the viability of the Totem Park parking lot in East Beach as a venue for acts with even greater drawing power. That is, in fact, where the closing concert of the series will take place Aug. 15, when the Crash Test Dummies will follow rising opening act Fionn (White Rock-raised twins Brianne and Alanna Finn-Morris). Opening the series July 4 at 7 p.m.

Continuing the nostalgic theme, Kalimba (July 14 at 8 p.m. at Five Corners) salutes the horn-heavy sound of Earth Wind & Fire; while The Fab Fourever and Eagle Eyes (July 18, 7 p.m. at Totem Park) are guaranteed to bring back memories of The Beatles and The Eagles. On July 25 at 7 p.m. Byrnes and roots/blues/pop and world music artist Babe Gurr will stir up the crowd at Memorial Park, while on Aug. 8 rocking boogie and blues musicians Dueling Pianos and show band Dr. Strangelove (with its uncanny ability to cover everything from the Beatles to Lady Gaga) will keep the party going at Five Corners. The pier itself, which had a 100foot section washed away in the storm, is due for a comeback by the

end of August with repairs already commissioned by the city (at some $3 million) to reconnect the two sections of the structure. But fundraising is still vital, according to the volunteer group Friends of the Pier – which includes the White Rock Youth Ambassadors, who got the ball rolling late last year with a GoFundMe page, and some heavy hitters in the White Rock and South Surrey business community, including Landmark Properties and Oceana Parc. The group’s target is to make up an estimated $2 million shortfall in funding, even after the city’s insurance and grants from the federal and provincial governments are factored in. Storm damage revealed that a total rebuild of the pier (valued at some $16 million) will ultimately be necessary to bring the structure up to current construction and earthquake codes.

Cool off at local pools, beaches As the weather heats up, Semiahmoo Peninsula residents are going to be looking for places to cool off. And there’s no shortage of options, whether you prefer a sandy beach or one of the local pools. No matter what you’re in the mood for, you’re sure to find the perfect spot.
Crescent Beach Crescent Beach is a low-key alternative to the hustle and bustle of nearby White Rock Beach. Whether the tide is out or in, it's a great place for playing on the sand, flying kites, indulging in ice cream, enjoying a picnic and more. Lifeguards are on duty from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the summer months to keep an eye on swimmers in two roped-off areas. Swimmers should be sure to stay within the designated areas, keep children within arm’s reach and be aware of currents. Dogs are not allowed on the main beach during the summer, but for those wanting to bring their fourlegged family members with them, there is a designated off-leash area at Blackie Spit. Another perk of this beach for visitors: free parking.
White Rock Beach Thousands of visitors flock to White Rock Beach every summer to walk the pier – which this year will be under repair – or take a dip in the ocean. Named after the large boulder on its shoreline, this charming, oceanside community is located along an eightkilometre stretch of sandy beach. The beach is always bustling with activity and excitement through the summer, especially around Marine Drive. At low tide, children can build sandcastles, play frisbee and explore the marine life. Pay parking is in effect – from 10 a.m. to midnight – so be sure to have a credit card or change to feed the meter.

South Surrey Indoor Pool If you prefer to stay cool in a pool – sans seaweed and salt water – the South Surrey Indoor Pool is open yearround. A popular spot for swimmers of all ages and experience levels, the facility admission fee offers access to six 25-metre lanes, a dive tank and two diving boards. Sunnyside Outdoor Pool As soon as the sun begins to really sizzle, the Sunnyside Outdoor Pool, located at 15455 26 Ave. becomes a haven for many. New era for Semiahmoo First Nation The Semiahmoo First Nation – led by Chief Harley Chappell – entered ‘a new era’ this year, breaking ground in March for long-awaited water and sewer infrastructure. Officials from multiple levels of government gathered for the occasion, which Chappell described as “a very momentous, historic day for the Semiahmoo.” Aimed at having a longstanding boilwater advisory lifted, it followed years of planning, design and more that took on a particular urgency in August 2016, following notice from the City of White Rock that the band’s water supply would be terminated “within… 18 months.” Much has happened in the years since, including that the SFN was chosen to be among 33 First Nations

In January, Indigenous Services Canada approved the $10 million infrastructure project – during which more than two kilometres of pipe is to be laid between Highway 99 and the Little Campbell River. The work is not proceeding without some controversy, however, as the funding did not extend to connections for non-SFN residents of the land. After opting in April against paying a $50,000 fee to be included in the work, those residents now have until June 15 to vacate their homes. SFN officials say Beach Road access to the reserve lands will remain closed to all but local traffic for the duration of the infrastructure construction.
