A

s this issue of Indulge goes to press, Lower Mainlanders are, at long last, packing away well-worn winter coats and boots and celebrating the arrival of spring.

It’s a welcome – and long overdue – change after having been collectively lulled into a false sense of complacency by Mother Nature throughout December and January, only to be smacked in the face with a seemingly endless litany of snowfall warnings through February and early March – appropriately Groundhog Day-esque in its repetitiveness, if you think about it.

But spring is finally here and it’s a time for rebirth. This year, that idea takes on a whole other level of symbolism, as heads begin to poke out from under the giant piles of blankets where many of us have been buried for the past two months.

For the gardeners among us, it’s an invitation to get outside and bury fingers in the warming earth, discover what parts of the garden managed to survive winter’s onslaught and then make the annual pilgrimage to a favourite nursery or garden centre.

Among these folks is South Surrey’s Joan Mara, who, for the past decade, has lovingly tended to her idyllic Spirit Garden. The space, which began as the Secret Garden, opened to the public and now serves as a place of reflection and healing for anyone in need of a respite from the world at large. Tracy Holmes stopped by for a visit.

each year orders his bees by the pound from New Zealand. He puts them to work in his backyard, filling combs with fresh honey that, Iley tells reporter Aaron Hinks, reaches its peak flavour in mid-summer.

For those who can’t get enough of winter, a short trek to Vancouver Island’s Mt. Washington will scratch the itch for another snow day or two.

Crisscrossed with trails for snowshoers and skiers alike, the mountain at the edge of Strathcona Park is open year-round for anyone on foot, boards, bikes, tubes or toboggans who’s eager for a getaway in the great outdoors.

If you prefer to stick closer to home, but still want to get out of the house for a couple hours, why not stop by Five Corners Cafe for breakfast and soak in some of the 50-plus years of local history on display in this iconic diner.

Reporter Alex Browne did just that and came back with plenty of interesting tidbits.

Someone who rarely gets home – at least until the end of the playoff run in June – is NHL announcer and South Surrey resident Jim Hughson. Nick Greenizan sat down for a chat with Hockey Night in Canada’s play-by-play man during a rare stop at home.

While we welcome the arrival of spring, this truly is an Indulge for all seasons.

So take it out onto the patio and soak in a few rays while you read. Or, if in the time it takes for this magazine to reach your doorstep winter has once again reared its ugly head (which, let’s face it, isn’t impossible), why not grab a cup of tea and curl up under a pile of blankets.

South Surrey’s Spirit Garden marks its 10th anniversary this summer – and it has more than proven its potential to be both a place of beauty and connection

People come now, sometimes, to the garden because they want to feel better.

T

he nine-minute read that Joan Mara penned to tell the story of South Surrey’s Spirit Garden – the drab greenspace she and her husband Jon transformed into a place of beauty and serenity – is blooming with emotion.

Dubbed ‘Spirit Rising,’ the story meanders from the moment of reflection when Mara first saw the potential of the detentionpond lot in the 2800-block of 140 Street; through quiet contemplation, inspiration and excitement.

Amongst hints of frustration, there is no shortage of determination and far more than a wisp of mischief.

“There’s something so sweet, about being underestimated!” Mara writes, after telling of the deal she made with the City of Surrey to have them haul away all the yard waste generated during the site’s cleanup.

“Four years and at least 15 tons of yard waste later, the good man from the City knocked on my door, a strained look on his face and a glistening brow: ‘Mam, we’re going to have to

renegotiate the yard-waste deal, you’re killing us.’”

As detailed and passionate as Mara’s story is, one thing perusers won’t find in it is an explanation for its dedication – a message that is tinged with sadness: “Written for my friend with the beautiful Spirit, Cathy Cherbosque.”

Sitting in the kitchen of her home – literally a stone’s throw away from the nowpicturesque lot that grew into the perfect backdrop for everything from a quick rest to a

wedding – Mara smiles at the memory of her friend.

Cherbosque was the wife of a colleague who Mara had met and grown close to while attending professional events around the world. When the two women were introduced during one of those events in Barcelona, “we just totally hit it off,” Mara said.

She described Cherbosque as a “very gentle, kind woman with a very fierce activist side.”

Mara remembers, towards the end of Cherbosque’s cancer journey, leaving a party in Los Angeles to spend the evening with her.

It was around the same time that Mara had begun crafting her ‘Spirit Rising’ piece, and after the visit, it just felt right to include the mother of two.

“At the time I was writing the story… Cathy had, for a number of years – maybe over a decade – lymphoma,” Mara said.

“She was losing her battle.”

That visit at Cherbosque’s home in Encino, Calif., “was the last time I saw her,” she added.

“I just felt moved to dedicate (Spirit Rising)

to her. She really was rising from the end of this life to the next phase.”

Cherbosque’s memory is among many that have become firmly rooted in the garden in the years since that first seed of inspiration was planted in Mara.

This summer will mark 10 years since transformation of the half-acre lot, from plain and ordinary, to a lush oasis began – a transformation that now also benefits from the botanical expertise of partner Rob Scagel.

And it’s been about seven years since the garden “took on a life of its own… spoke to me” about the kind of space it wanted to be, Mara said. That space was not just the place of beauty it had grown into in its early years, when it was known as the Secret Garden, but one for reflection, healing and harmony, she heard.

It wanted to be a place where people could also spend time reconnecting with loved ones who are no longer here, Mara said.

Sensing that she’d been tapped on the shoulder, Mara said it was a message she felt she had to take seriously.

That same day, what had been the Secret Garden became the Spirit Garden. As Mara shared word of the added purpose, it became evident it filled a need.

People started coming forward, asking to incorporate plants and sundry other items – from echinacea and a rosebush, to a sundial – as subtle, yet meaningful tributes to their loved ones: mothers, a son, a teacher among them.

“It’s a healing place, she added.

“I think there’s a lot of love out there.

“People come now, sometimes, to the garden because they want to feel better.”

As example, Mara told of one visitor, an older woman who arrived one day with her brother.

The brother stood at the garden’s edge, and the woman told Mara she had brought him “because he’s struggling.” “‘He just feels better because he’s here,’” the woman commented.

Mara can relate. She said the

garden is “where we come to play,” and a place where the work put in gives immeasurable returns.

It has also become, in a way, a part of her own spiritual practice and awareness – although she can trace those roots more profoundly to 2008, the year she helped a cousin through the final weeks of his cancer journey, and had a “very awakening” visit to India.

“The garden was one of the external expressions for me,” Mara said.

With spring now in the air, Mara knows there is a busy season ahead in the Spirit Garden.

Open to the public year-round, it will again be host to a Solstice Stroll. And Mara hopes to plan a special event to mark its 10th anniversary.

Regardless of what the future holds, one thing is clear: the potential Mara saw a decade ago has been more than proven – and that, in itself, is enough.

“I knew from the beginning it could be a very beautiful garden,” she said. “I still don’t know exactly what it’s going to look like in the next five or 10 years. It keeps telling us.

“The fact that other people have come to love it… that’s been very rewarding.”

Spring is a busy time of year for White Rock’s Bill Iley and his honeybees

B

lossoms line the streets with a vibrancy that’s almost been forgotten, green thumbs transition from labour to nourish, young families search orchards for the perfect peach.

As the sun shines and the children play, there’s a dedicated group of workers that, in a sense, are responsible for the beauty of the seasons, but are often overlooked.

White Rock’s Bill Iley can be found sitting on a bench in his yard studying nature at work on a warm, sunny day. He watches the movement of a particularly fascinating breed of creature, one that never seems to take a break.

They are his honeybees.

Reminiscent of a Ford assembly line, each player works together for a common goal.

They’re organized, intelligent and there’s thousands of them.

“And their business is to make honey,” Iley said.

Iley is not a scientist or biologist; he’s not a working conservationist or ecologist.

He is a gardener and a beekeeper.

Living only a few doors down from city hall, Iley has kept a beehive on his small White Rock property for the past three years. With more than 7,000 bees at work, his little pollinators are busy.

The 83-year-old grandfather has observed that there’s one job within the colony that seems to be particularly challenging.

“Their flight patterns are amazing,” Iley said. “It is the way of communicating. They just don’t come in and out from any angle, it’s almost like an airport. Flight patterns in and out. They get their orders

You want them to work as long as (they) can, and they want that, too… Bees are very industrious, they’re genetically made to work. from the drones – they have a few drones that patrol the hive. They will let you know if you’re getting too close to the hive, they’ll give you a buzz.”

Iley received the beehive from his son-in-law, who decided to trade beekeeping for raising chickens.

He’s expecting a new order of honeybees this month, and will tend to them – with a granulated sugar syrup – until the flowers begin to bud.

Then, it’s open season.

“You want them to work as long as (they) can, and they want that, too,” Iley said. “Bees

are very industrious, they’re genetically made to work. You get the one queen, you get a few drones, but the biggest percentage is worker bees.”

Iley, with the help of his son-in-law, purchases bees online from New Zealand. He explained that they come in a large, ventilated tube.

“When you purchase your bees, of all things – I had to laugh – you buy them by the pound.

One pound is basically 3,500 bees. My sonand-law always orders two pounds, so we have more than 7,000 bees whizzing in and out of the beehive.”

Honey produced in the summer is typically

the best, Iley said, adding that he harvests the liquid gold about three times per year.

“Everything is so prolific out there, all the types of flowers that you wouldn’t get in the fall. Late July- August-honey is the sweetest and most flavourful because of the smorgasbord of flowers, plants and blossoms for them to forage on.”

Other than his efforts to collect the honey, Iley’s hive practically takes care of itself.

“We just open up the top of the hive every couple of months just to check on them. When we see that there’s lots of honey forming, then we decide it’s time to harvest the honey,” Iley said.

However, it hasn’t been all fun in the sun for Iley’s honeybees.

Development in his neighbourhood has caused some trouble for his small operation.

His neighbour is constructing a new home, and the towering structure started to cause some issues last year.

“Shade and shadow, bees don’t like either of those,” Iley said. They won’t come out of their hive on a dull day or if the shadow is cast by a building. That’s why we’re going to move the beehive to the backyard, away from the shadow of that building coming in at 3 o’clock in the afternoon.”

Iley said the City of White Rock bylaw will allow homeowners to have a maximum of two beehives as long as their property is of a certain size and regulations are followed with respect to distances from buildings.

The idea of having a beehive in the family was first introduced by Iley’s young grandson.

Iley said he’s impressed with the school’s curriculum, which has a focus on the environment.

“My grandson came home from school one day… and said to his dad that he would love to have bees. They were discussing bees and the environment and how it’s so important,” Iley said.

If you’ve eaten an apple, it was likely directly, or indirectly, made available thanks to a bee.

According to Statistics Canada, apple production in 2016 generated a total harvest value of $223 million, of which honeybees were responsible for about 90 per cent ($200 million).

Statistics Canada reports that economic harvest value contributed by honeybees ranges from $3.97 to $5.5 billion per year.

According to StatsCan, there are more than 2,600 beekeepers in the province, or about 27 per cent of Canada’s beekeepers.

However, Alberta dwarfs B.C. in terms of the number of colonies – which may include providers of pollination services – with 305,000 to 39,885, respectively.

Making tracks Snowshoeing atop Vancouver Island’s Mt. Washington can be a breathtaking affair

T

he satisfying crunch of packed snow giving way underfoot breaks the silence as we make our slow, deliberate trek up the steep slope.

With a boxy plastic and metal frame strapped to each foot, after digging in jagged toe claws and pulling one leg in front of the other for what feels like hours (but is likely no more than 20 minutes), we arrive at the top of Rossiter’s Rise on Vancouver Island’s Mt. Washington.

Breathing deeply, burning lungs fill with crisp air as icy winds bite into cheeks and forehead, blowing away any sweat before it has a chance to bead.

It’s time for a rest – a few well-earned

minutes to relax and take in the kind of natural spectacle that can only be viewed from the side of a mountain.

The snow has settled during a stretch of mild temperatures that hover just a couple degrees below freezing, but the sheer depth of the tree wells, visible from the safety of well-marked trails, provides some indication of just how much of it lies between our feet and the frozen ground. It’s a lot – more than two metres, in fact.

Carrying on, we head into the trees that line the top of the ridge, and begin a gradual descent, winding our way through the forest in a wide loop that eventually turns us back toward our starting point, Raven Lodge.

Although not as convenient for local outdoor enthusiasts as Vancouver’s North Shore mountains, Mt. Washington, located on the eastern edge of Strathcona Park, is an easy 90-minute drive from Nanaimo’s two ferry terminals and its trails offer a measure of solitude that the big local hills cannot provide.

Separate networks of Nordic trails intersect throughout the forest and, on occasion, snowshoers must stand for a moment and wait as cross-country skiers glide past.

Not today, though.

The trail is relatively quiet on an overcast Saturday morning in late February, with only a handful of small groups taking on the

challenging three-kilometre Rossiter’s Rise route.

Individual snowshoe trails, ranging from 500 metres to four kilometres in length, crisscross the mountain. But these can be easily combined for those who want to stretch out the distance and take full advantage of an adult day pass.

Unlike Rossiter’s Rise, a black diamond route – which, truth be told, we’ve stumbled upon by accident – the 2.5-km Old Cabin Loop offers snowshoers a far gentler experience, winding between hills while providing a few small ups and downs along the way.

For more of a challenge, snowshoers can choose Tree Beard’s Trail, Crooked Creek, Finger Glades and the dog-friendly Snow Paws trail, which together offer nine kilometres of moderately difficult terrain.

Every route departs from the lodge, where trail users can buy activity passes, rent equipment, use the restrooms or grab a bite of lunch.

New this past winter, 15 km of fat-bike trails have opened to riders.

Nearby, the Hawk, Eagle and Whiskey Jack chairlifts whisk alpine skiers farther up the side of Mt. Washington for expansive views of the Comox Valley and the Pacific Ocean.

For those who don’t care to conquer the mountain on downhill skis – but still prefer to let gravity do the work – a few options exist.

There’s a snow-tubing course (tubes provided) for $18/hour and a toboggan hill, where whole families (up to six people) can slide for $5.

And the Mt. Washington ZipTour – billed as Vancouver Island’s longest zipline – is scheduled to open this summer, with reservations starting in the spring.

It promises four lines with a collective vertical drop of 415 m (1,364 feet).

For those who do head up the mountain during spring, summer and fall, there is another way to get the heart rate up.

The network of cross-country and snowshoe trails remains open to hikers after the snow disappears.

In warmer weather, the fragrant forested trails wind past picturesque mountain lakes that are all-but-invisible to passersby during the winter months.

Picnic tables set up along their shores provide the perfect opportunity for a scenic lunch stop.

But be warned, once your food has been spotted, the local whiskey jacks will happily swoop in and steal anything that looks good, even if you happen to be lifting it to your mouth at the time.

With the National Hockey League playoffs just a few weeks away, longtime hockey broadcaster Jim Hughson is preparing for a travel-heavy stretch where he’ll be among the busiest people in sports – but he wouldn’t have it any other way

T

he National Hockey League playoffs are, it’s often pointed out, an immensely difficult grind where, by the time the final buzzer sounds, the players left standing are worn out, exhausted, with barely enough energy to lift the Stanley Cup over their heads.

But while the athletes on the ice are the only ones subjected to slashes and body-checks, the two-month playoff schedule can take a toll on others involved in the game, too – including broadcasters.

Jim Hughson knows it all too well.

The South Surrey resident has been on the mic in NHL broadcast booths since the late 1970s, and since 2005 has been a key part of the fabled Hockey Night in Canada team, which broadcasts the NHL playoffs.

From mid-April until the first few weeks of June, if a hockey game is on television in your house, it’s likely Hughson’s voice you’ll hear calling the play-by-play.

“There are years where I’m out doing the playoffs and I haven’t got home for 35 days,” the affable 62-year-old said over coffee at a Crescent Beach café on a rare day off.

“It’s a solid two months. If your series ends in four or five games, then maybe you get a chance to come home for a few days… You dump everything out of your suitcase, put some new stuff in, you see your family, your dog and then you’re back on your way.

“But these last few years, every series has been going six or seven games, and when that happens, you’re just going on to the next one.

You don’t even get a chance to repack.”

That said, Hughson is not complaining.

Truth be told, he loves every second of it, even if he jokes that his wife’s friends think she is single, considering how often she’s solo at weekend social events and outings, with her husband across the country, cramped in a broadcast booth, announcing Toronto Maple Leaf goals or Roberto Luongo saves. (One of his more well-known phrases, “Great save, Luongo!” has become something of his calling card among a certain segment of Canucks fans – to the point that entire Youtube montages are devoted to him announcing the ex-Canuck netminder’s best moments.)

While the games themselves are always exciting – “It’s fantastic, there’s nothing like it,” he said – downtime on the road can be difficult, he admits.

“It’s the greatest drawback… the creative use of spare time is extremely important,” he said.

“You just hope you’re in a good city where just walking around is interesting – somewhere like New York.”

Hughson is an avid runner, and after years on the road, he has routes mapped out in every city he visits. As well, he’s formed a close bond with the 20-plus members of the broadcast team that travels together

“They’re the best in the business, and really good people, and they’re away from their families, too,” he said.

Hughson knows his travel schedule could be made lighter if his family chose to live in Eastern Canada, but after spending a decadeand-a-half there earlier in his career, the Fort St. John native relishes the opportunity to live in his home province.

“It’s a product of where you work and where you choose to live, and we love it here and we’ve never wanted to leave,” said Hughson, who moved to the Semiahmoo Peninsula in 1994.

“When you travel as much as we do in our industry, it’s really important that your family be rooted somewhere they’re comfortable, because my wife, Denise, she’s alone a lot during the season. We’re empty nesters now – our kids have grown up and moved out – but when they were home, it was even more important.”

The longtime Hockey Night in Canada voice cut his teeth as a teenaged broadcaster in Fort St. John, getting a job at the local radio station while he was still in high school.

After graduating, he had a short, quicklyaborted stint at university before returning to the radio business.

“I did go to university for a short time, but I found it didn’t pay very well, so I left and went back to work in the radio business – much to the chagrin of my parents,” he laughed.

The decision to stick with radio paid off, and the young broadcaster spent the next few years bouncing throughout B.C., from small town to small town, “doing that obligatory thing where you’re moving around, trying to make an extra $50 a month.”

Eventually, he ventured farther east, to a new radio station in Brandon, Man., but his time there was short, thanks to an unexpected phone call from longtime CKNW broadcaster and sports department boss Al Davidson, who offered Hughson a job.

At CKNW, Hughson – who would still have been in university had he gone that route – got the opportunity to fill in for legendary Vancouver Canucks play-by-play man Jim Robson on Saturdays, when the latter would slide over to broadcast games on television.

The first game Hughson called – Canucks versus Canadiens at the Montreal Forum – was in the late 1970s when he was just 21 years old.

“I remember pieces of the game. I remember my excitement, and being thrilled with the opportunity to do it,” he said.

“I don’t remember the score, but it was a safe assumption that the Canucks lost, because they never won in Montreal in those days. It was the late ’70s, and the Canadiens were a dynasty.”

Getting the chance to work the odd Canucks game only whet his appetite for more, so he soon set out to find a regular play-by-play gig.

“That wasn’t satisfying enough for me…

I wanted to do it full-time, and that wasn’t going to happen here because Jim (Robson) was firmly entrenched in his job and the position just wasn’t available,” Hughson explained. “So I looked around, and I would’ve gone anywhere, but the opportunity came in Toronto.”

In the mid-1980s, TSN launched in Canada as the country’s first all-sports television network, akin to ESPN, which had been broadcasting stateside since 1979.

The network had made overtures to Hughson upon first hitting the airwaves, but it didn’t have NHL broadcast rights at its inception.

After a few years, the network acquired a cablehockey package, and Hughson made the trek east.

“When I left, everything I owned fit in the trunk of my car, and I came back with an 18-wheeler, a wife and a child,” he said.

With TSN, Hughson was afforded the opportunity not only to call Maple Leafs games, but also baseball as well.

He began calling Montreal Expos games and, in 1990, moved to the Toronto Blue Jays beat.

The two-sport schedule was a gruelling one, but at the time, it was perfect for him.

“I was really young and ambitious, and the opportunity was there to do as much as I could handle,” he said. “I had an insatiable appetite to do it all, and it was all there for me.

“It was such a great opportunity to get better at my craft. I’m glad I don’t have any of those tapes, though, because I’d probably hate them now.”

Eventually, he focused solely on hockey

– because it was what he grew up with, and because broadcasting both sports became too much to juggle.

“It was wearing me out,” he said.

“Hockey kind of chose me, but I also chose it, too. I like the idea of working a season that’s in the winter, and not having to work in

the summer.”

With baseball off his plate – and a move back to the Lower Mainland to work Vancouver Canucks broadcasts – Hughson was able to spend his summers with his family, making up for the weeks he was away during the school year.

“It’s nice to be around the kids all summer, when they’re out of school. It was a good trade-off,” he said of his two now-grown children, Matt and Jennifer.

Since moving back to B.C., while also moving up the broadcasting ranks nationally, Hughson has also been able to check off a career “bucket list” item – calling hockey at the Olympics.

He first got a taste of it during the 2006 Winter Games in Torino, Italy, and again eight years later in Sochi, Russia, where he was in the booth for every single game of the tournament.

“It’s one of those challenges in the industry that you always want to have the opportunity to do,” he said.

The gold-medal winning Canadian men’s team at the 2014 Olympics remains the best team Hughson has ever seen, he noted.

And though he still has a press pass from the

event, it’s one of the rare mementos he’s kept from his career, he said.

Another would-be keepsake from Sochi he left behind on purpose – and is likely still available to anyone willing to search through abandoned condominiums on the coast of the Black Sea. “They built all these new houses and apartments, thinking that the world was coming, and then, it turned out, the world didn’t come, so a lot of these places were empty, and we ended up staying in one of them,” he explained.

“When we left… I had this really garish, red outfit that CBC had given me to wear during the Olympics. I looked at it and thought there was not a chance I was ever going to wear it again, so I left it in the room.

“I suspect it’s still there, right now, hanging in a closet in that apartment. I doubt anyone has moved in.”

With so many great moments stored in his memory, Hughson said he’s just never felt the need to keep memorabilia from his journey.

“I’m not really one for living in the past – I’m always thinking about the next game, not how many I’ve already done,” he said.

It’s one of those challenges in the industry that you always want to have the opportunity to do.

Past meets present T

he day starts early at at White Rock’s Five Corners Cafe: 7 a.m. weekday mornings; eight o’clock on weekends.

That’s when cook Sylvia Larsen comes in to fire up the grill for the breakfast trade that starts as soon as the cafe – just a few steps from the corner of Johnston Road and Buena Vista Avenue – opens for business a half hour later.

Some weekends, owner Catherine Honeywell, her daughter and co-owner Shannon, and server Trudi Antonia – trailing Sylvia by only a few minutes – will find there’s already a lineup outside on the pavement, before they’ve even had a chance to open the door and flip the switch on the neon ‘Open’ sign.

They’re ready with a smile, a laugh and a friendly greeting, nonetheless.

Strictly a cash-only, breakfast and lunch operation, the cafe is usually bustling until the sign is turned off at 2 p.m. and the process of sweeping and cleaning and setting up tables for the next day begins.

Most of the patrons are regulars who beat a steady path to the door, looking for that cup of freshly-brewed coffee; the comfort of traditional diner fare (eggs and bacon, burgers, sandwiches, hash browns and pan fries are staples, as one might expect, although vegetarian options are offered).

White Rock’s Five Corners Cafe – an enduring landmark in the seaside city – is a nostalgic throwback to ’50s diner culture

But well-prepared old-school cuisine is only part of the appeal of the more than 60-year-old cafe, as customers, both old and new, readily acknowledged during a recent visit.

Many remarked that it’s an endearingly nostalgic throwback to the diners of yore; organically connected to the ’50s and ’60s era – and even earlier decades.

It’s an appeal that seems to connect across the generations, too.

Looking across the cafe on an average day, you’re likely to see everyone from teens and young families with children to recent retirees and seniors well into their 90s.

“It’s a nice little neighbourhood cafe – that’s why I come back regularly,” said White Rock’s Chris Kowalski, occupying a booth with his brothers Tom and Andy, both former city residents, although they now live in Langley.

“I lived here 15 years and I came here all the time,” Tom Kowalski said.

“It was a nice sleepy little town then. This embodies the White Rock that used to be.”

Andy Kowalski, heavily involved in the Semiahmoo Peninsula music scene in the early ’90s, said he comes back now and then and usually includes a visit to Five Corners Cafe, because it retains the vibrancy of

the community he remembers.

“It’s a very retro look, very ’50s. You only see this in the Deep South now.”

“It’s a place that has soul,” summarized counter customer Kaili Zevenbergen, a Vancouver resident, back for a day to visit the town where she grew up.

“It has character, it has life. I’ve been coming here around 20 years, since I was in school. I’m a very nostalgic person and I’m glad a place like this still exists. I get very frustrated when I come back here now. I hardly recognize the city for what it used to be. It doesn’t have that same sense of heart, culture and connection.”

That’s not a complaint at the cafe, where a plethora of vintage bric-a-brac gathered by chronic collector Catherine – including antique cameras and pop bottles – only reinforces the connection with the past. So, too, do blondwood panelling, a copper kitchen door, and a streamlined vintage counter mixer in a shade of pastel green that fairly screams mid-20th century design.

As if to confer a silent blessing on the prevalent theme, era icons James Dean and Marilyn Monroe look down from the walls adjacent to the cafe’s metal-edged ‘moderne’ counter, while above the booths and tables that line the opposite side of the cafe, blackand-white images of Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, Ava Gardner, Hedy Lamarr, and a host of other stars, add further old-school glamour.

The Hollywood style fits well with the cafe – movie and television crews have often used it as a location, valuing the genuineness of the setting as opposed to the self-conscious kitsch of other venues striving for a retro look, Catherine said.

“We keep it authentic,” she said. “And we keep getting left something by the movie people – the blinds are from one shoot and the gingham curtains are from another. They even painted the building last year!”

There are other pictures, too, in a long row above the counter – some of them reaching back as far back in time as the as the publicity stills. They’re all locals, most of them regular customers seen in their earlier days, or close relatives. Some are gone, now, but far from forgotten.

“I can tell you the story behind all but two,” said Catherine – who started the tradition and still manages to find space for photos donated by customers, although it’s getting harder to find room for them all.

It’s a touch that – like everything else in the cafe – reassuringly connects past and present.

And it also also underlines the enduring sense of community; the kind of welcoming environment where regular customers can count on being greeted by their first names.

“After the second or third visit, we pretty much know who everyone is,” says Shannon, who, with sister Jess bought out former partner

While majority owner Catherine works both in the kitchen and out front, depending on scheduling and business, Shannon and Trudi focus on serving customers.

Jess has chosen a less visible, but no less valuable, role in the partnership, Shannon said,

focusing on the paperwork, bookkeeping and ordering side of the business.

“I’ve been around here, on and off, since I was 15, although I moved into Vancouver for a while,” she added.

“When the opportunity came to buy into the business it timed out perfectly. The vibe is amazing – I’ve made basically all my friends here. The people I get to be around, and who I connect with, have changed my life for the better.”

A steady stream of students also comes through the cafe to bus tables, wash dishes and work as counter staff, Catherine added.

Lines between customers, staff, friends and family do tend to get blurred in an establishment that many locals have come to consider almost a second home.

As Catherine noted, Sylvia is a former partner in the cafe who sold her interest, but came back to cook, along with mom Rosemary, when a crisis left the kitchen short-staffed.

And Trudi is a long-time family friend and customer who came on board only six months ago, after relocating from Calgary, where she was working as an interior designer.

“I was trying to get back to White Rock and taking the job here worked out really well,” she said.

“Cathy and I have been best friends since we were 19. I’ve spent 35 years on the other side of the counter. It’s always been fabulous food and service – this was always my go-to spot. It was nice to always have the same order and to know that booth number six was mine. And now I’m on the other side I’m happy to come in to work every day and I’ve found that 99 per cent of the customers are nice. I love getting to know their names and their orders.”

The one-storey stucco building – part of a surviving strip of smaller stores on the corner – comes by its retro appeal honestly.

Ironically, it didn’t start life as a restaurant, but as the city’s first sub-post office, Hilltop – the earlier name for the Five Corners neighbourhood – which first opened at the site in 1947.

According to Lorraine Ellenwood’s authoritative history, Years of Promise: White Rock 1858-1958, the post office was originally located inside John Anderson’s grocery, but by 1950 it had outgrown its space, leading Anderson to construct a new building, opened at the beginning of 1951.

There’s still a relic of those days at the cafe, Catherine noted, pointing to a round metal weight, once used by postal clerks for weighing parcels, that now does duty as a kitchen door stop.

Rapid postwar growth in White Rock meant the building’s life as a sub-post office was short-lived. By August, 1956 the postal operation had migrated a few doors up Johnston Road to Walkey’s Drug Store, and the building was converted to a cafe.

Then known as Gaynes’ Grill, it was a popular destination through 1962, when it was purchased by Art and Lora Saunders, and became the Saunders Grill for some three years.

Musician, videographer and local historian Tom Saunders, barely out of the toddler stage at the time, still has happy memories of the family venture.

“Typhoon Frieda hit town on Friday, Oct. 12, 1962,” he remembered. “Our parents had just opened the Saunders Grill two weeks earlier, and because the cafe had gas, they were one of the few restaurants in town that was open after the storm. They ran out of food fast, and my dad went round the neighbourhood borrowing eggs.”

It was a popular spot with teenagers attending the old Semiahmoo High School – at the current site of White Rock Elementary – he said.

crowd from the high school every day, for their lunch special of a burger, fries and Coke for 25 cents.”

The venue’s juke box was also a source of contention, he recalled, particularly after it ate five of his nickels for five consecutive plays of the Beatles’ Can’t Buy Me Love – but only delivered one. And as soon as Marilyn found a way to adjust the machine’s decibels upwards, “it was a battle of volume levels from then on between her and my dad.”

After the Saunders sold out in 1965, the restaurant became the Five Corners Cafe, and the name has stuck ever since, except for a brief period in the late ’60s and early ’70s when it was ‘The Plate’, and then ‘Steve’s Submarines’, and a stretch in 1979 to 1985, when it was taken over by White Rock theatre legend Franklin Johnson to become ‘Franklin’s Five Corners Cafe.’

In more recent years, it was also owned by another local celebrity, internationally-famed operatic tenor Lance Ryan, and operated by his parents, Brian and Gloria Clinker.

Catherine’s own history with the cafe goes back to 1978, when she arrived as a teenager, newly transplanted from Toronto.

“I’d been in White Rock about a week when I walked in here looking for work, and was hired right away,” she said.

Somehow the cafe ended up being a continuing theme in her life, even after she met

“I came back in the late ’80s and and early ’90s when the Charltons – an English family – had it. Eventually Barb and I bought it with Sylvia and ran it for eight or nine years. Sylvia sold out her share a year ago in September, and Barb sold out in July, and my girls bought in.”

Typical of Catherine’s easy-going, old-style approach to the business, the cafe even has an honour system about paying the tab for regulars or new people who seem trustworthy.

“The fact we are a cash-only place sometimes

throws new people off guard,” she said, adding that while there is an ATM across the street, it’s not always working.

“We got a film out of that. We had a guy in here that didn’t have the cash on him, and we trusted him to come back after he’d been to the bank. Turned out he was a movie guy. He couldn’t believe we’d done that, and he was telling other people in the crew and it worked out that the cafe was just the location they were looking for.

“It’s the little things that come back to you,” she said. “It’s not just about the money – It’s about the whole experience.”

Back on the CASE A few years after starring in Canadian-made drama Rookie Blue, Surrey-raised actress Missy Peregrym is back on television as a special agent in a new crime procedural, FBI.

ust a few years after hanging up her fictional police badge, Surrey’s Missy Peregrym is back in blue.

The 36-year-old – who rose to fame on the Canadian police drama Rookie Blue – is the star of the popular new television show, FBI, which sees the actor playing the role of special agent Maggie Bell.

The show, which airs on Global TV in Canada and CBS in the U.S., is the brainchild of crime-television legend Dick Wolf, the creator of the Law & Order franchise who began his career as a staff writer on Hill Street Blues.

The lure of the new show was enough to drag Peregrym back to the crime-procedural genre – a move she originally didn’t plan to make after Rookie Blue wrapped up in 2015, following a six-season run.

“I took time off after Rookie Blue. I was so in love with (her character) Andy McNally that I said I would never do a procedural again,” Peregym told Entertainment Tonight Canada last fall, shortly after FBI debuted.

“I never wanted to touch that. It was such an amazing experience, and it still is. I know that nothing will ever be just like that.

“But this has been a different thing – it’s been a lot of fun.”

FBI is described as a “fast-paced drama about the inner workings of the New York office of

For Peregrym – who was born in Montreal, but grew up in Surrey – the new show is the latest in an ever-growing list of television and film credits. Beginning as a model at 18, she appeared in a number of commercials – for Sprint Canada, Mercedes-Benz and the Olympics.

Her work in those commercials caught the eye of a handful of casting directors, who

hired her for a number of small roles – both before and after Rookie Blue – including Dark Angel, Hawaii Five-O, The Night Shift, Heroes and Ten Days in the Valley.

She made her feature-film debut as a rebellious gymnast in 2006’s Stick It, and also appeared in the movie Back Country, which debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2015.

It was Rookie Blue, however, that truly gave her career a boost. And though she’s once again playing a member of the lawenforcement community in FBI, the two characters couldn’t be more different.

As Maggie Bell, she plays an accomplished field agent, as opposed to a wet-behind-theears rookie officer.

As an actor, she also feels more confident in the role, she said in the ET Canada interview.

“I know exactly where the gun’s going… there’s a familiarity there. I’m very comfortable in this role,” she said.

The show has been well-received in Canada and the U.S. – a spinoff is already in the works – and Peregrym added that she appreciates that fans are enjoying both her and her castmates’ work.

“I do feel very loved. I saw some ads on Twitter that said, ‘Missy’s back!’ and I almost cried,” she said.

“I was like, ‘Man, that’s so nice.’”

hite Rock is home to the longest pier in Canada – declared as such by city council – a record that seems likely to stand, even though, until the end of this summer at least, there’s a large hole in the middle of it.

The popular icon – a feature of the waterfront for more than 100 years, and declared a heritage site in 1982 – has received more than its share of buffetting, both political and physical, over time.

But even though a violent windstorm on Dec. 20, 2018 tore boats loose from their moorings – resulting in damage that led to the collapse of a 100-foot central section – there seems to be little doubt that the structure will be repaired and rebuilt by the city (even though the cost of completely upgrading it to modern construction standards has been estimated at $16 million).

When the pier was first built, the leading lights of the day were visualizing White Rock as a significant Pacific port, with the support of the MP, J.D. Taylor, and their MLA, F.J. MacKenzie, both of whom owned homes on the waterfront.

White Rock’s commitment to its historic pier remains strong

government provided funding for the construction of the pier over the summers of 1914-15, and during September, 1915, 62 vessels were reported to customs as being moored at the White Rock wharf for foreign shipping.

The euphoria, however, was short-lived.

Battering gales soon proved recurrent and costly, preventing safe mooring without protection. Even though many called for a breakwater over the years, it was only after the Second World War that appeals of the local Board of Trade made any inroads.

Sadly the first section of the breakwater, built in 1953, was immediately recognized as ineffectual – a $150,000 seagull roost – so the call for aid went out again to a reluctant federal government waiting for some demonstration the pier was commercially viable. Two extensions, in 1959, and 1961, did nothing to resolve the problem.

Over time, White Rock residents came to view the pier as their own – a natural focus of community activities – but the absentee landlord saw little virtue in maintaining a decaying facility that hadn’t fulfilled its expectations.

In 1970, the federal government offer, the

city ownership of the pier, plus $25,000.

White Rock turned it down: repair work alone was estimated at $130,000. During the following six years, the edifice was literally on shaky ground.

Art Bates, co-founder of the White Rock Yacht Co-op, incensed that city council wasn’t prepared to do anything to save the pier, pulled strings with an old Navy buddy in the federal Department of Transportation and managed to get the pier signed over to the city in perpetuity in 1976.

Then-Mayor Don MacDonald hailed a pact to rebuild the pier through government grants totalling $240,000. Jan. 1, 1977, the pier was closed to the public, and work began. Despite a strike that delayed the project, the pier was reopened in November of that year.

More than 40 years later, the city’s renewed commitment to the pier is just as strong.

Although it never served its intended commercial purpose, the pier has more than proven its worth as a tourist draw – rivalled only by the old station building (now the White Rock Museum and Archives) and the white rock itself.
