Hiking, Biking and Trails

T

here’s something about waking up to summer sunshine that makes you want to get out and explore. Cranbrook receives more sunshine hours than any city in British Columbia. What better way to enjoy it than to get outside and take a walk. Whether in running shoes or hiking boots, roller blades or on a bicycle, you will want to check out the great trails in and around Cranbrook, and farther afield.

From paved walking paths to strenuous hikes up a mountain side, there is a trail for every level of fitness.

One of the nicest trails in Cranbrook is the nine kilometre Rotary Trail. Beginning at the east side of the City near 30th Avenue North, the trail takes you through the city through Baker Park, Kinsmen Park and then Idlewild Park in the south, Isadore Canyon in the

north, and out to the Elizabeth Lake Wildlife Sanctuary in the west The 30-kilometre South Star Recreation Trail system is ideal for horseback riding or hiking in the summer, or cross country skiing in the winter. The trails begin at the south end of Cranbrook where 38th Avenue runs into the rural Gold Creek area.

Forty kilometres of marked and mapped trails are available in the Cranbrook Community Forest on the eastern edge of Cranbrook.

An old railway bed is the base for the Isadore Canyon, a seven kilometre section of trail, which offers a smooth but challenging bike or hike.

And we mustn’t forget the glorious North Star Rails To Trails, a 30-kilometre paved former railbed that runs from Kimberley to Cranbrook (and back again), for an up close and personal look at the marvelous countryside.

brook. Moyie Lake is barely half an hour away by car and is home to Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden and Kokanee. Jim Smith Lake is even closer, just on the west side of Cranbrook.

This is Trout Country, some of the best fishing in the world, and the fish out here are clever and challenging. They waiting for you to come and seek them out.

ranbrook is the major commercial centre of the East Kootenay region and the largest city in British Columbia’s southeast interior. Duck into downtown off the busy Highway 3 that passes through and see what’s happening.

Downtown Cranbrook is a place to relax, to take advantage of our numerous green spaces, urban biking and walking trails, our bustling shops and our fine dining experiences. This landmark replicates an original set that straddled the highway from the 1930s to the 1950s. No doubt you’ll notice Cranbrook Ed, a sculpture by Tony and Twila Austin and which commem-

Some might say Ed is an unofficial symbol of Cranbrook.

Downtown Cranbrook is also site of the landmark Clocktower Square, the historic Studio Stage Door theatre, our vibrant farmer’s market, and the chance to take in historic residential architecture, preserved over the more than 100 years of Cranbrook’s past and on display via a heritage walking or driving tour.

The Cranbrook Public Library is open seven days a week, the Western Financial Place recreation facility and aquatic centre is just a short stroll away, and there’s always something happening in Rotary Park, the heart of downtown.

Further down Highway 3 is the expansive Tamarack Centre mall, and across the way is a complex of shopping facilities which means Cranbrook is your stop for all the supplies you need for your B.C. holiday.

Jimsmith Lake

C

ranbrook is surrounded by jewel-like lakes, and the closest is Jimsmith,. This 35 site campground situated among a lakeside Douglas fir and larch forest, is a peaceful and welcome retreat for locals, the travelling public and visitors to Cranbrook. Sunbathing, swimming, non-motorized boating and picnicking are popular activities at Jimsmith Park that are located in a day-use waterfront area. The day-use gates are open from 8 am to 10 pm.

The lake is also the perfect setting for nature study and wildlife viewing, including the rare Western Painted Turtle.

In winter, the park is transformed into a snowy playground for tobogganing and ice skating.

he St. Eugene Golf Resort & Casino is a major internation tourism attraction, located just 10 kilometres from Cranbrook.

The resort is surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of the area and is also a cornerstone of economic and personal success for the Ktunaxa Nation.

The original St. Eugene Mission was a grand turn-of-thecentury stone building steeped in local history. In 1912, the Mission was converted to a residential school, where until 1970, 5000 local First Nations children passed through the Mission’s doors to attend classes.

The St. Eugene Golf Course opened in 2000 followed by the Casino of the Rockies in 2002 and the St. Eugene Hotel in 2003.

In 2004, two partners were brought on board, Samson Cree Nation from Alberta and Rama First Nation from Ontario.

In 2017 complete ownership of the St. Eugene Golf Resort and Casino was assumed by the four communities of the Ktunaxa First Nation.

Today, the resort pro-

vides a venue for sharing the rich Ktunaxa culture. Visitors to the new Interpretive Centre can view contemporary Aboriginal art, listen as Elders share local legends and history in the teepees, and enjoy traditional foods in the hotel restaurant.

Adjacent to the luxurious hotel created out of the old residential school, the Casino of the Rockies features 239 slot machines, four choices of table games, a full service lottery centre, an offTrack betting room and more.

The 18-hole golf course features spectacular views of the St. Mary River and the nearby Fisher Peak amidst the Rocky Mountains to the east.

Kootenay Rockies Gran Fondo

he Kootenay Rockies Gran Fondo, the premiere cycling event in southeast British Columbia, and a major draw to riders from across North America, is the unofficial end mark of the East Kootenay summer and kicks off our sultry autumn. It’s considered the jewel in the crown of the Canadian Gran Fondo circuit. The ride has three course options: the 152-km Gran Fondo, the 102-km Medio Fondo and the 58-km Piccolo Fondo. Riders cross three spectacular rivers and head through

Elizabeth Lake

owadays, the Elizabeth Lake Wildlife Sanctuary is a 300 acre wildlife habitat area on the southwest edge of Cranbrook. The lake and wetland is one kilometre in diameter, rimmed by forests and marsh.

Ten thousand years ago, Elizabeth Lake was formed during the last major glacier retreat. Used by the Ktunaxa First Nations as far back as 5 000 years ago, the lake once covered a larger area to the north and east. During the 1950’s, a sawmill operated next to the lake and the area was used as a dumping ground for concrete, asphalt and sawmill waste.

Sadly, the marsh habitat was mostly destroyed.

During the 1970’s, the ecological values of the area were recognized.

Various groups attempted to establish formal protection and some habitat restoration projects were initiated at that time. The Rocky Mountain Naturalists became stewards of the Elizabeth Lake area in the 1990’s. Since then, they have managed the area in cooperation with the City of Cranbrook, The Land Conservancy, Ducks Unlimited and other interested parties. The Naturalist Club controlled weeds, built the trail system, installed interpretive signs, seeded some areas with native grasses and planted shrubs and trees. The Rocky Mountain Naturalist’s goal is to raise public awareness, restore native vegetation and protect the water supply which feeds the marsh.

Today, Elizabeth Lake

is partially within the City of Cranbrook’s Confederation Park, featuring a network of trails and bird watching blinds.

The local and visiting public is invited to explore and enjoy the wonderful scenery and nature of the Elizabeth Lake Wildlife Sanctuary throughout the year. During spring and fall, a rich diversity of bird species migrate through the East Kootenays and stopover at Elizabeth Lake to rest. During the spring, many species of birds breed, build nests and raise their young here because of the diverse habitat and food supply. Breeding success is improved if disturbance is minimized. Bird checklists and brochures are available at both Chamber of Commerce visitor centres.

Sam Steele Days

he biggest festival in the East Kootenay Region is held in June, an annual event paying a funfilled homage to Sam Steele, an important figure in local history, and celebrating the Cranbrook of the past, present and future.

Sam Steele Days kicks off this year, 2019, with the theme “Celebrating the Spirit of Cranbrook: Its History, Its People, Its Future.” on Friday, June 14, with pancake breakfasts and BBQs around town. On Saturday a gigantic parade wends its way through downtown followed by dozens of different events and activities in the Central Fairgrounds and around town The fun continues on Sunday, making the third weekend in June the most highly anticipated weekend of the Cranbrook year. This is the biggest festival in the Kootenays – you’ll want to be here!

As well, the Sam Steele Days weekend is when the Sam Steele Sweethearts pageant is held, where Cranbrook’s youth ambassadors are chosen who will represent the city for the coming year. The pageant is held on the Friday, making the Sam Steele Days Parade the official debut for the Sam Steele Sweetheart and Sam Steele Princess.

Take a trip through time at the Cranbrook History Centre. The internationally renowned museum houses a collection of restored classic railcars and locomotives.

The “Incipient Shire of Aeriesgarde” (Society for Creative Anachronism) brings Medieval and Renaissance life back to life with their October Medieval Festival; The annual Cranbrook Multicultural Festival will be held August 17 in 2019; The City of Cranbrook brings crowds downtown with June’s Sam Steele Days, September’s Fall Fair, and February’s Winter Blitzville. And the Kootenay Children’s Festival is the largest event for kids in southeast BC, held every May. dlewild Park is a sumptuous area at Cranbrook’s southeast edge — a forested park full of towering pines surrounding a small lake constrained with a newly rehabilated dam, that helps provide water to the city nestled below.

The lake is stocked with fish and alive with birds, and paths wend their way through the trees and around the water. Fishing piers jut out over the lake, but only kids and seniors are allowed to try their luck there.

The gravel hiking route is part of the TCT (Trans Canada Trail). Along the paths are a series of viewing benches overlooking the lake.Up above the lake, on a ridge, is a small park with a paved walking path, picnic tables, fire pits, washrooms and a children’s playground The park is best accessed from the main parking lot via a wooden footbridge.

During the winter months after the lake is frozen over it transforms itself into an outdoor skating rink.Just north of the park are the hiking and mountain biking trails of the Cranbrook Community Forest.

Idlewild Park is home to Memory Lane which is the predecessor program to the City of Cranbrook Trees for

Life program.

Kootenay Trout Hatchery Driving southeast from Cranbrook you will find the famed Kootenay Trout Hatchery, well worth an hour or two of your time.

The Kootenay Trout Hatchery produces some 2.5 million trout fingerlings each year, stocking up to 150 lakes in the East and West Kootenay regions annually, as well as several others further afield.

An extensive interpretative area featuring aquariums, educational models and displays you will learn about the life cycle of a trout whilst viewing small fry and fingerlings be taken through the trout rearing process. As you stroll through the beautifully groomed hatchery grounds there are turtles, fish and water insects in the outdoor turtle pond.

The facility has tour guides on staff seven days a week for tours of our facility, and also offers the “Learn to Fish” program, and fishing birthday parties at our on site pond.

People can come visit the hatchery seven days a week, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
