Mike Gildersleeve has been involved with the Mission City Farmers Market for the past six years. The community volunteer recently stepped into the role of the market’s president and is now busy preparing for the first event of the new season, set for May 4 in the Leisure Centre parking lot. One of the big challenges for the market this year is to find a new location to sell their fresh, locally produced products.

A part of building community in Mission Gildersleeve has been with the Mission City Farmers Market for six years On May 4, the new season of the Mission City Farmers Market is set to begin.

Mike Gildersleeve, president and chair of the market, believes it’s going to be a great, busy but challenging year.

The market itself has a long history in Mission.

April 24 marked the 23rd anniversary of the outdoor food market.

“That’s the good news, this is a market that has survived and thrived. It is continually changing,” said Gildersleeve.

This year, there is a new challenge, finding a new location.

The market has been located in the Mission Leisure Centre parking lot for the past two years.

Before that, it took place in the parking area at the Mission Library.

While organizers are happy in the present location, the upcoming construction project for a new seniors centre and seniors living complex will eventually force the market to move. It could happen as soon as August.

“We may be able to return there in a few years, but we will have to find a temporary location sometime this season.”

It’s all part of the job as president – a role that Gildersleeve is enjoying. GILDERSLEEVE “I feel really fortunate to be part of the Mission City Farmers Market.

I’ve been a member over the last six years or so and it has just provided a wonderful volunteer opportunity to help be part of building community in Mission,” he said.

He first got involved after a friend convinced him to check out the market.

“I had recently moved to Mission and I thought this really answers my interest in being more aware of local food and food security and what’s happening in Mission around that and how I can be a part of that.”

He called it a positive experience.

“Other interests that I have are more around the environment and conservation and speaking

out about pipelines … so this is something more on the solution end of things,” said Gildersleeve.

He said it’s a feel good choice.

“If we can be involved and help stimulate local economy and healthy food products and activities, that’s part of an environmental solution too.”

The market currently has about 30 vendors, but more are always welcome “We are really there to provide local stimulation for the economy around healthy, nutritional food.

So if you make it, grow it or bake it we’d like to talk with you because you could be a vendor.”

The markets run every Saturday from May 4 to Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There are also four indoor markets during the winter months.

Gildersleeve said during the summer, there are several special events held, including Farmer’s Appreciation Day, Children’s Day and more.

“Each week we have face-painting and story-telling, it’s a good place for families and it’s also a social hub.

The market is always looking for more volunteers and board members. Anyone interested should stop by the market and talk to the new manager Trena Bennett, or visit missioncityfarmersmarket.com.

Gildersleeve said there are many reasons to join the market. “For me, I get really excited about where my food comes from and for local entrepreneurs, people who have decided that this is what I’m going to make or grow, and promoting that. What we are doing is promoting the local economy and I enjoy that.”

All-dressed Potato Skins 6 russet potatoes, cooked and chilled (see info box) 4 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese 1/2 teaspoon paprika 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon onion powder 3 slices bacon, cooked and chopped 2 cups grated sharp cheddar cheese 1/2 cup sour cream 3 green onions, chopped

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 475 ºF (250 ºC). Cut the potatoes in half lengthwise.

Remove the pulp with a fork, leaving about 1 centimetre on the skin.

2. In a bowl, mix the oil, Parmesan and spices together. Brush the mixture on both sides of the potato skin. Place them skin side up on a baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes. Flip them and return to the oven for 10 more minutes.

3. Put the bacon and cheese inside the skin and put them in the oven for 2 minutes, or until the cheese has melted.

4. Garnish each potato skin with 1 tablespoon of sour cream and some of the green onion and serve.

MISSION HOSPICE SOCIETY The Mission Hospice Society was founded in 1985 as a non profit Society by Lilian Dudfield to provide compassionate care and support to the dying and the bereaved. Hospice emphasizes “care not cure” for the terminally ill and the provision of social, emotional and spiritual comfort for the patient, family and friends throughout the final stage of illness, at the time of death and during bereavement. The programs and services of the Mission Hospice Society are free.

THE PALLIATIVE CARE TEAM The Mission Hospice Society is part of the Palliative Care Team at Mission Memorial Hospital. This group cares for patients diagnosed with life-limiting illnesses. The patient and the family can access whatever support they need from members of this team. Team members include physicians, home care nurses, a social worker, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, pharmacist and the Hospice Coordinator of Volunteers. Our volunteer support services are also in The New Residence of Mission (TRIM). We provide support to patients who are suffering grief and loss.

Sleep apnea is defined as ‘episodic decreases in airflow during sleep’. It is a sleeping disorder that can potentially get serious if ignored.

-There are different types of sleep apnea: obstructive (OSA) and central (CSA).

OSA is caused by repeated closure of the throat or upper airway during sleep. OSA is the most common form of sleep-disordered breathing affecting at least 2% women and 4 % of men.

CSA is caused by a neurological problem that interferes with the brain’s ability to control breathing during sleep. It may also occur at high altitudes and also due to drugs or substance abuse.

OSA is usually diagnosed by performing a sleep monitoring study which is also known as a Nocturnal Polysomnography. There are different levels of this study, ranging from level 1 to 3. level 1 is the complete sleep study which includes various physiological functions including the brain activity, respiration, heart activity, and blood oxygen levels while the patient is sleeping. Level 1 sleep study is the most accurate which is why it is preferred other levels.

What are some lifestyle changes that can help reduce the symptoms of osa?

CPAP is the most effective treatment and the only one which has shown significant improvements including cognitive function, sleepiness, measures of quality of life and lower blood pressure. It works by blowing warm, humidified air via a mask which the patient wears at night while sleeping. The pressurized air holds the nose, palate and throat tissues open.

OSA is still relatively undiagnosed in many patients and untreated patients usually suffer from depression, weight gain, decreased quality of life, workplace and vehicular accidents, and high blood pressures among other things.

Therefore, it is a good idea to discuss with your doctor about getting a sleep study done especially if you have been told that you snore loudly or have apneic episodes during sleep.

Then gardening with raised beds is likely the best solution.

Raised beds are garden plots raised several inches or more off the ground and enclosed on all sides by a frame made of wood or rock. You simply fill your box with rich soil then start planting the desired fruits, veggies, herbs, flowers and plants.

Raised beds are different from planters because they have open rather than closed bottoms. Since raised beds are designed this way, they provide better drainage.

• Pneumococcal. This vaccine prevents pneumococcal disease, which causes pneumonia, meningitis and sepsis. It’s recommended for all adults age 65 and older as well as for younger adults with conditions that affect their immune system, such as HIV, lymphoma and leukemia.

If you have chronic health conditions or work in the health care industry, you may require additional vaccines. Before travelling abroad, remember to check what vaccines you’ll need and get them administered four to six weeks before your trip.
