Canuck Place—Dave Lede House to Expand Inpatient Services in Abbotsford embracing the life of each child and family, Canuck Place is a caring, innovative children’s hospice and community-based service. Providing pediatric palliative care for B.C. children with life-threatening illnesses and the families who love them, the free-standing hospice has two British Columbia locations: Canuck Place in Vancouver and Canuck Place—Dave Lede House in Abbotsford. in May 2018, Canuck Place introduced every other weekend inpatient care at Dave Lede House with four patient beds and four family suites to complement the active outpatient program. As of April 1, 2019 they have expanded inpatient services to 24/7. This expansion of care will have an immediate and direct positive impact for families on program. “Canuck Place is so wonderful,”said surrey resident Dwayne Cunningham, whose daughter Lumina is on program and was born with severe Hydrocephalus,
a genetic disorder that affects the development of muscles, eyes and the brain.“They provide expert clinical care, love and support for families and children like our Lumina, who desperately need such assistance. And now we can access more care closer to home.” Because of her condition, Lumina requires 24-hour care and a feeding tube. she also has frequent seizures. Through Canuck Place, Lumina receives medical respite and symptom management. Her entire family is also supported with care and counselling so they can focus on savouring their time together. When a child is diagnosed with a lifethreatening illness, parents are impacted by the 24-hour care they provide for their child. The very real stresses incurred by these families include financial pressures, relationship challenges, fatigue, distress and increasing acute-care needs that impact mental and physical health as well as the overall quality of life for the whole family. Canuck Place addresses these needs.
This past year, Canuck Place provided care and support for over 728 children and families from every corner of B.C., with more than 47 per cent residing in the Fraser Valley. But the need is growing, which is why Canuck Place is expanding inpatient care at Dave Lede House. This growth is only possible because of the caring community of local donors who support the children and families of Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. The inpatient services expansion requires additional donor support to sustain since Canuck Place raises 60% of its annual operating costs.
Canuck Place offers comfort and care to these families to help ease their burden with a unique and holistic approach to clinical care. Families on program have access to medical respite care, pain and symptom management, art, music, and recreation therapy, end-of-life care as well as grief, loss and bereavement counselling. Vehicles and equipment are drained of liquid and mercury switches in accordance with the Automotive Recyclers environmental Association and all metals are recycled in accordance with the Metal Dealers and Recyclers Act and Regulations. All rubber is removed and resold or put aside and recycled with the Tire stewardship of British Columbia.

Focused on youth initiatives, literacy and education, children and families, seniors, poverty reduction and employment initiatives for disadvantage or disabled people, The Rotary Club of Abbotsford-sumas wants to make a real, tangible difference. “This year for our club, we’re focused on expanding our engagement with youth leadership,”said club president Karina Chow. she said the club is always looking for ways to work together with youth who want to make both their local community and the international community a better place. The Rotary Club of Abbotsford-sumas supports the interact Club at Abbotsford school of integrated Arts (AsiA) sumas Mountain. The interact Club is taking on an international initiative of purchasing pad-making machines for third-world countries and is fundraising in order to do this.
“Rotary is all about pulling together people with different backgrounds but a shared desire to make a difference,”said Chow.“it’s just fantastic.” each year this small group of about 20 Rotarians raises funds for their chosen causes through community activity, including its annual st. Patrick’s Day Dance and silent Auction and strawberry sale. The st. Patrick’s Day Dance and silent Auction is the club’s main fundraiser and it often sells out two months before the event. This casual evening features dinner, dancing, cash bar, live music and silent auction. Happening later this spring, the Annual strawberry sale will offer fresh, clean, sliced and packed strawberries to the public. in May, the details will be announced on the club’s Facebook page (Facebook.com/RotaryAbbotsfordsumas) with prices, ordering information and pick-up instructions. Working with six other Rotary Clubs, and other community partners, this grant will provide $296,000 (CAn) to Transitions Guatemala, an organization that makes wheelchairs for Guatemalans. Of the funds raised by the Rotary Club of Abbotsford-sumas, the majority stays in the community with the remainder supporting international initiatives. They support non-partisan and inclusive groups who have demonstrated need and who are providing direct services that improve the lives of those in the community and around the world. This year, the Abbotsford Community Foundation (ACF) is celebrating 40 years of giving in Abbotsford. since 1979, ACF has been committed to inspiring philanthropy and developing partnerships by investing in people, projects and programs that will strengthen our community. ACF has experienced steady asset growth over the years, increasing the scope and number of granting opportunities. since inception, ACF has reinvested almost $11 million back into the community through grants and student awards. These grants have been made to local charitable organizations for programs and projects related to children and families, education, arts and culture, sports, agriculture, animal welfare and social issues like homelessness and poverty. “We are pleased to have distributed from our smart & Caring Community Fund alone, more than $500,000 since 2013 to Abbotsford charities whose programs
september 19th marks the fourth annual smart and Caring Golf Classic at Ledgeview Golf Course. Beginning with a shotgun start and ending with a banquet at the Quality Hotel and Conference Centre, ACF’s goal is to raise $150,000 at the event, which will go into the capital for funding the smart and Caring Grants program. in 2018, the event raised just over $100,000! Abbotsford Hospice Society to launch palliative day program Abbotsford Hospice society (AHs) is celebrating more than 35 years of helping people who are dying and providing free support to grieving families, and three years in Holmberg House. in 2018 they were chosen as the Abbotsford A-List winner for favourite charity. Located at the Campus of Care adjacent to Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre, Holmberg House is Abbotsford’s first free-standing adult hospice. The 30,000 square foot, 10-bed facility provides dignified end-of-life care to adults as young as 19. it also accommodates grief support groups, education seminars and one-on-one support services. “Abbotsford Hospice society provides these services without cost to the individual,”said executive director Ron Kuehl. Historically, AHs has provided support for palliative patients and their families and support for the Palliative Care unit at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. in 2019, they will expand their services by offering support to those in palliative home care.
Currently in the design phase, the palliative day program will support individuals living with an illness at home and will allow them to come to Holmberg House for the same types of supports and services offered to other patients in palliative care. “We believe there is a gap in being able to support individuals who are in active home care in our community,”said Kuehl. “We will address that need with this program.”Funding for the first two years of this program’s operation has already been secured. in addition to supporting those who are living with a terminal illness, AHs supports children, teens, and adults who are grieving the death of a loved one. services offered by staff and specially-trained volunteers include one-to-one companioning, support groups, expressive therapies, and a lending library with materials for all ages. With 200 active volunteers, AHs relies on their volunteers to run many of their programs. Volunteers receive 30 hours of initial training as well as ongoing training
and support from the 12 staff members. “We couldn’t do what we do without volunteers, it’s an integral part of our program,”said Kuehl. The staff and volunteers work to accommodate as many requests and emotional needs as they can, whether it’s bringing horses by for one last visit, or facilitating a wedding in the garden to make a mother’s dream come true. AHs has also been chosen as one of 13 Canadian organizations to participate in a national nav-CARe research study, which will allow them to help people much earlier in their journey. “The intent is to take hospice considerably
upstream from our focus on palliative care to the point of diagnosis with a life-limiting illness,”said Kuehl.“We’re interested in working with a patient in care and their family right at the point of diagnosis.” The government supported—but not government funded—organization receives 80 per cent of its funding from individuals. To help keep their programs no charge and to cover costs of about $300 per day per patient, AHs holds fundraisers throughout the year and accepts donations on their website.
