Two teams of firefighters from the Columbia Valley are training to climb the highest elevation firefighter stairclimb in the world, in support of a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people living with cancer and their caregivers.

Panorama firefighter Jonathon Schramm is competing for the second year in a row. Last year, Mr. Schramm recalled it being pretty nerve-wracking just waiting for his turn and watching others head out on the challenge.

But once he got started, he just kept putting one foot in front of another.

“Cancer’s a pretty big cause of death for firefighters . . . I kept thinking of what people with cancer are going through,” he said. “Between that and the encouragement from all the others doing it, they help push you. You eventually get through it.”

The firefighters run the stairs in full turnout gear (the uniform they wear to fight fires) which can weigh upwards of 30 kg (65 lb).

Mr. Schramm and fellow firefighter Kyle Flynn have been training at the Panorama department stairs (35 stairs) which they run up and down 36 times per training session every two or three days.

“We are proud of our members taking part and giving their best effort in this annual event which not only raises money for cancer research, but also helps spotlight the link between firefighting and cancer, and the presumptive cancers affecting so many firefighters,” remarked Drew Sinclair, deputy fire chief for Columbia Valley Rural Fire & Rescue Services, who will also be joining the crew at the challenge along with Rob Hellyer, a former Valley firefighter who now lives in Calgary.

This is the third year for a Panorama team to attend the challenge. The Invermere Fire Department has stepped up this year too. Team captain Brendan Garies decided to do the challenge and convinced another four members to join him. On joint training days, they run the stairs at Lakeview Meadows – 169 stairs – about seven laps each time.

“It’s been fun, and it’s a good way to stay in shape too,” commented Mr. Garies. Fellow firefighter Janice Dallaire agreed, noting the started training in plain clothes then worked their way up into their full firefighting gear.

“I definitely have a lot more stamina now,” Ms. Dallaire remarked.

Other Invermere firefighters on the team are Jordan Smith, Billy Robideau, and Nick Melmyk.

Radium man considers assisted death

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com When Rolf Heer’s doctor walked into the examination room and closed the door, Mr. Heer got right to the point.

“You know why I’m coming to see you? I want a medical-assistance death as soon as possible,” he said.

“I’ve been in so much pain it’s unbelievable.”

While his doctor empathized with Mr. Heer’s pain and offered medication, he said: “My opinion is really to try and dissuade you from this line of thinking, the main reason being that you’ve responded to treatment... MAiD (Medical Assistance in Dying) is probably not in your best interest essentially.”

Mr. Heer disagreed. “I’m so sick I can’t even do anything,” he said. “Laying in bed is not the future for me.”

With Mr. Heer’s prostate cancer in remission, his doctor said he doesn’t have a medical explanation for Mr. Heer’s pain, why it comes and goes and why it’s so severe that he is requesting MAiD. Their conversation went back and forth with the doctor advocating for more testing and pain management and Mr. Heer wiping away tears while trying to get his doctor to reconsider.

What follows is condensed from their discussion: Mr. Heer: “You won’t give me the medical-assistance death. Is that basically what you’re telling me? You want me to suffer a lot longer it sounds like.”

Doctor: “No, I definitely don’t want you to suffer.”

Mr. Heer: “I can go to Switzerland and get it done.”

Doctor: “Rolf, what I’m saying again is that your terminal illness is under control.”

Mr. Heer: “Why am I so bloody sick?... It’s been going downhill. Since the house burned down and everything it’s just been going downhill every day. I feel that every day I’m getting worse and worse and worse and there’s no way out.”

Doctor: “My biggest concern is that you’re making an irreversible decision on the basis of possibly other things.”

Mr. Heer: “It sounds like only costing the government a lot of money for nothing.”

At Mr. Heer’s 65th birthday party a few days earlier, the man who is known for his wild parties and frivolity didn’t want to exchange pleasantries with the Pioneer. Instead he said he was feeling terrible and invited the paper to another milestone life event – his appointment to ask for MAiD. When his doctor asked how he enjoyed his birthday, Mr. Heer said: “It was a good party. But you know how many pills I had to drop until I could make it to the party? This is no fun for me living like this anymore.”

The doctor acknowledged Mr. Heer’s pain, and implored him to have a colonoscopy and gastroscopy.

“One issue that people have with Medical Assistance in Dying is that we maybe are not treating people,” he

said. “It’s legal in Canada, but I really think that we need to do these other tests to give you a better answer.”

Mr. Heer reluctantly agreed to the additional testing his doctor recommended. How reluctantly? He said he feels like he’s being forced to stay alive.

Clutching his new pain-management prescription, he struggled with shaking hands to light a cigarette as he stood outside the clinic.

Dr. Doug Smith, Interior Health’s executive medical director for end of life care and medical assistance in dying, said conversations – like the one Mr. Heer had with his doctor – are crucial when it comes to making end-oflife decisions.

“From my point of view (MAiD) comes down to respect for a person’s autonomy and self determination and really understanding that we don’t have an understanding of anyone’s suffering unless we’re in their shoes,” he said. “What the legislation describes is that the patient is experiencing intolerable suffering that is not able to be relieved according to their own experience. So that allows the patient voice in this... At the end of the day it’s the person who’s asking for the assessment who would like to go through this, it’s their determination, their experience, their decision to make.”

That said, in order to have a medically-assisted death, there are stringent criteria a patient needs to meet, criteria Mr. Heer’s doctor isn’t sure that he meets.

Among other conditions, the patient must have a “grievous and irremediable condition which is an illness, disease or disability that causes the person enduring suffering that is intolerable to them and cannot be relieved in a manner that they consider acceptable” and be “in a state of irreversible decline where death is reasonably foreseeable,” Dr. Smith said.

As for what makes a person’s death ‘reasonably foreseeable,’ he said it’s not always easy to define.

“It really is complicated. Like everything there’s some black and white and then there’s some grey,” he said.

While someone – like Mr. Heer – who is “having a fair amount of suffering” whose death is not imminent could initially be declined for MAiD, that person could arrange to meet with their doctor again as their illness progresses.

After his appointment, Mr. Heer got a call from his doctor, who offered to meet with him again the following week.

“He said to me it’s actually your decision if you want to go for medical-assistance death,” Mr. Heer said.

In order to have assistance in dying, a patient needs to first request MAiD, obtain approval from two doctors, wait for a period of at least 10 days to allow time for somber reflection, and consent again at the time of the procedure.

Now that he might have his doctor’s support, Mr. Heer is having second thoughts.

agree with me either that I would go for the medical-assistance death. But I have lots of other friends that say: ‘well in the pain you’re in, go for it.’ So I got a little bit on both sides, you know, so at the moment I’m not sure,” he said.

More on MAiD Since medical assistance in dying became an option in 2016, four patients have chosen to meet their ends through the service provided by doctors at the Invermere & District Hospital. By the end of February 2019, 344 medically assisted deaths had taken place across the Interior Health region.

Dr. Smith said approximately half of the people who have requested and are approved for MAiD choose to proceed. The other half opt out for a variety of reasons which could include changing their minds, passing away in the meantime or becoming incapacitated and incapable of providing consent before the procedure.

“The patient and their families will arrange with the prescriber (the doctor who administers the life-ending treatment) all the details of the medically assisted death: when it would occur, where it would occur” and how it would occur, whether the patient would prefer a “patient-administered oral medication route or an intravenous route,” he said. “It’s supposed to be very person-and-family centred, and we work very hard to ensure that that’s the case.”

• On Monday, April 8th, a report was received of an erratic driver who had driven into Canal Flats off of the highway.

Enough detail was provided to identify the driver who has had their licence suspended by the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles for some time. Contact with police has been made and the investigation is ongoing.

Safe roads for all within the Valley is one of the priorities for this detachment and communication is essential and appreciated from all.

• On Monday, April 8th, Columbia Valley RCMP were notified that a customer had left their purse in the Fields store. The purse was picked up by Sgt. Kakuno, however before attempts could be made to contact the owner, the owner had attended the front counter and claimed the purse. The owner looked through her purse and was delighted to note that everything was there. Thanks to whomever originally turned in the purse.

• On Monday, April 8th at 7 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP were advised that a female had been dropped off at the Radium Prestige. It was gleaned that she had been involved in a single vehicle collision and had been picked up by a passerby and dropped off at the hotel with no money for a room and was sleeping in the lobby. On police attendance enough details were provided and verified that the subject had swerved for a deer and went into the ditch near Kimberley. The driver appeared confused as she could not

remember her address or family contact information. There was no indication of alcohol or drugs and it was felt more of a medical concern. Sgt. Kakuno determined that she required a medical review and brought her to the Invermere & District hospital where the subject was admitted for shock / confusion.

• On Monday, April 8th, the Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of a possible sighting of two individuals wanted out of Saskatchewan. Reportedly a male and female departed the hotel in a BMW X5 with Saskatchewan plates. The occupants resembled two subjects as noted on Facebook by the Complainant as wanted out of Saskatchewan. Sgt. Kakuno located the BMW X5 at the Invermere Tim Hortons drive through.

The subjects were stopped and confirmed not to be the wanted subjects out of Saskatchewan and the complainant was updated.

Now, as noted from reading this report, one would think that the majority of files occurred on April 8th and that Sgt. Darren Kakuno is the only officer that actually works here. He is the boss and he is. Ha Ha. There are files that at times involve more sensitive information and we do our best to protect those circumstances until the conclusion of the investigation, and so do not share some of these instances. I know working this past string of nights admittedly we were fortunate in that very little was reported statistically with files. Do not let that fool you as there has always been work ongoing daily / nightly within our Valley where, as police officers, we attempt our best at deterring drug trafficking, impeding property crime, and mitigating violence through visibility.

Business support for non-profits in the Valley

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Brian McIntosh and Jayson Murray, who run the Columbia Valley Makerspace Society, know how to make pretty much everything from robots to quilts to stainedglass windows. But as the society enters its second year, the visionary engineers have realized they don’t quite know how to build their non-profit society.

“We’re good at the Makerspace; we’re not good at the non-profit space,” said Mr. Murray.

Enter the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) and its Non-profit Advisors Program that connects non-profits with advisors who can help the groups run themselves more like businesses. The program also subsidizes costs for consulting work.

CBT communications director Delphi Hoodicoff said the program was developed because residents wanted to see more supports in place to help non-profits help their communities.

“The program supports non-profit organizations to build capacity, become more sustainable and become more efficient,” she said, adding that it can help non-profits with strategic planning, human resources, financial management, governance and community relationships.

When Mr. McIntosh heard about the program and that it could fund 80 per cent of the costs for strategic-planning work, he said: “I thought, ‘Oh my god, that’s just too good.’”

The Makerspace leapt at the opportunity and brought on Magi Scallion, a consultant CBT recommended, to develop their plan. When Ms. Scallion arrived for their initial meeting, Mr. Murray was blunt about why they reached out to her.

“Basically this is Brian and I crying for help,” he told her.

Under her direction, Mr. Murray, Mr. McIntosh and three volunteers brainstormed about the group’s strengths, weaknesses and pressing needs.

“I think it went super well. There was lots of passion and ideas, which was great,” Ms. Scallion said after the meeting. “I like to give people usable strategic plans that provide them a vision that’s very longterm and big but also a concrete step-by-step plan for the next three years so they get well on their way. That’s what I pride myself in providing, and I think that that focus also creates results.”

Then she developed a 23-page strategic plan with recommendations on how the Makerspace can set itself up for success. Next steps include developing job descriptions for board members, recruiting business-minded directors and finding a home for the Makerspace.

Mr. Murray and Mr. McIntosh readily admit they get distracted by “shiny things” – like all the neat programs and technology they want to bring to the Valley – and said it was helpful to have the organizational tasks ahead outlined to keep them focused.

“It was a great process that has given us a clear roadmap, confirming our suspicions of where our weak areas are and showing us how to go about strengthening them,” Mr. Murray said.

As for the shiny things, Ms. Scallion hopes to see them stay.

“I want all of the great ideas to remain in place and to happen,” she said. “I just want to help build the foundation so that they can happen efficiently and effectively.”

of Watermain Flushing The municipality will be flushing its community water system for the next 6 weeks. This program, carried out twice yearly, is necessary to maintain the quality of our water supply. There may be some short interruptions in the water service and temporary discoloration of water as a result of the sediment and organic materials that are being flushed from the water mains. Permission to live

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com What if having permission to die gives those who are suffering with terminal illnesses more capacity to live?

What if knowing that your end can come when you choose means you don’t have to live with worry and dread?

And what if being freed from the dread of a difficult death or a prolonged period of intolerable suffering makes each present moment even the teensiest bit lighter?

Since Medical Assistance In Dying (MAiD) became an option those who are deathly ill can request, only half of those who are approved to dictate the terms of their passing choose to do so.

Dr. Doug Smith, Interior Health’s executive medical director for end of life care and MAiD, said those who decide not to proceed with prearranged deaths opt out for any number of reasons.

Some might pass away in the meantime, while others might lose the capacity to consent before their final appointment arrives.

But I wonder if others, being assured a gentle death awaits them at the time of their choosing, might then feel freer to live.

Last week I attended an appointment Rolf Heer had with his doctor to request an assisted death. Mr. Heer cried in the examination room as he begged the doctor to let him go. His doctor asked him to do more testing, offered medication for his pain and said he wanted Mr. Heer to want to live.

Witnessing these men debate whether one should allow the other to die was beyond heart wrenching. The doctor, who had a roll of smiley-face stickers, wanted the happiest and kindest outcome for his patient. Mr. Heer, who was wearing a fraying pink robe, just wanted permission to stop hurting.

At one point the doctor looked at me as if to implore me to ask Mr. Heer to soldier on. I didn’t. That’s because I want both of these men to get their wishes. I want the doctor to give Mr. Heer hope that the time he has left can be not only manageable but also rich and beautiful. I want Mr. Heer to have a way out of his pain.

And I wonder if granting Mr. Heer the opportunity to chose to his own ending could ease his suffering such that it might make the rest of his days worth living.

Cancer only half the battle for Windermere resident Dear Editor: In July of 2017 I was diagnosed with Stage 2B(just about a 3) cervical cancer.

I was sent to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary. It was a stressful and expensive experience; anyone who knows someone or has gone through it themselves know the costs of having a critical illness.

I diligently filed and separated all my receipts in regards to my illness. I filed my taxes as I have every year and did receive a refund. It wasn’t even close to what I spent but it was something.

In September of 2018, I received a letter from Revenue Canada that they were auditing my medical expenses. I sent in all my receipts. Fast forward to the middle of March 2019: I received another letter with all my receipts. Now they are asking for all my appointment dates; they want to know why I wasn’t treated in my home province. They want a letter from my doctor stating I had cancer and couldn’t be treated at home. Are you kidding me? So I gather up all the information and mail it off to Winnipeg.

April 5th, GST day, my check wasn’t issued. Then the phone calls began. Revenue Canada reassessed

my medical expenses before they received the information that they requested. I sent in $7,000 worth of receipts and they gave me credit of $105 and said they wanted the refund I received back by April 3rd.

I didn’t receive anything until the afternoon of the 5th. I had to call collections and get a stay of 90 days because they had already charged me over $100 in interest. It took me two hours to finally get connected to someone who could assist me.

I had to resend in all my receipts by fax (28 pages) and call the Tom Baker Centre to release my medical information to Revenue Canada to prove that I indeed had cancer and was justified in being there.

They did not notify me that they were halting my GST payments and applying them to a balance I didn’t know I had because I just sent in what they required to do a proper review.

That GST money was earmarked for me to go to Calgary on April 11th for a cancer followup. I had to cancel that appointment as I cannot afford to miss work to go. Everyone I spoke to is really sorry. I have contacted our MP with the hope I can get this expedited in a timely fashion.

My government is treating me like a thief and I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one that Revenue Canada has done this to. I was on sickness benefits for 15 weeks at 55 per cent of my wage. The following year I got a letter from them stating they were auditing me and if I didn’t have my original medical form in that they told me to hold on to (thank goodness I did) they would be demanding the money they gave me back.

Deplorable. I also have to take steps to protect myself against the government in case things don’t go my way in the way of a hardship application so they stop the interest and forgive what they may say is

the amount owing.

I’ve worked hard my whole life, always filed my taxes, never cheated the government. The stress my government has inflicted on me unnecessarily is horrific. I didn’t skin my knee. I did not claim anything I was not entitled to, and I bet my information is sitting on a desk in the Winnipeg Taxation centre unopened and waiting. The last time it took four months.

I am not just a number and I am going to do everything I can and will fight for as long as it takes to right this wrong, not only for myself but for anyone who has had to endure the wrath of our government.

Since 2015, the Columbia Wetlands Waterbird Survey, under the leadership of biologist Rachel Darvill of Parson, B.C., has engaged more than 170 keen volunteers in documenting more than 322,000 birds in the Columbia Wetlands. As one of many engaging events in this year’s Wings Over the Rockies (WOTR) festival, we encourage you to join the students of Martin Morigeau Elementary School in Canal Flats for a walk along the trail to the headwaters of the great Columbia River.

Since January, these budding naturalists have been building models of watersheds and Indigenous tools as well as collaborating with the Ktunaxa and Shuswap local bands, artists, Wildsight’s Ecostewards program and the Columbia Lake Technology Centre.

Part of the Wings Over the Rockies fundraising component is the live and silent auction. Items will be available to view and bid on starting on Tuesday, April 30th at Pynelogs Cultural Centre, headquarters for the festival.

These pieces will range from golf games, dining vouchers, art/photography, home décor, jewelry, overnight stays at local resorts, adventure activities (paddling, zipline) and adventure travel. While visiting Pynelogs you will also find the Lil Peeps Art Show, exhibiting the art from the local daycare centre kids. At the same time, check out the world class cuisine served in the art-lined walls of Café Allium. It’s a great place to meet up, and admire Lake Windermere from the deck.

This year’s live auction item is for a berth for two people aboard Ocean Endeavor with Adventure Canada on a Circumnavigation of Ireland! Adventure Canada continues to collaborate to support this festival and invites patrons to experience exceptional expeditions to some of Canada and the World’s most beautiful, fragile and bird-

rich environments. To place a bid on this item you will need to attend the Gala Dinner on Saturday, May 11th.

Embedded within WOTR this year is a Paddling Film Festival. You’ll be inspired to sign up for a range of guided live events for first hand experience of the world class waterways here in the valley.

On a guided paddle of the Upper Columbia Wetlands to Lake Windermere with Dr. David Bird, you’ll have a chance to identify some of the 250 bird species that live or migrate through and discuss how they have adapted to living there. Paddle into the evening on the Columbia River, Radium to Edgewater, enjoying the twilight and the sounds of the birds and wildlife before they settle down for the night. Another river outing during the day offers a barbecue lunch on the river. If sitting on the water isn’t your cup of tea, try our Stand Up Paddle (SUP) Tour of the Columbia Wetlands. A perfect accompaniment to any of these trips is the Akisqnuk First Nation Cultural Welcome event.

For some dry land adventure, sign up with “A Bar Z Trail Rides” to explore the woodlands around Fairmont Hot Springs, and catch a glimpse of wildlife framed within panoramic views of the Rocky Mountain Trench.

And if your mouth is just plain dry, you might consider attending the Masters of Infusion event. Taynton Bay Spirits infuses its products using real fruit and looseleaf tea. Come learn about their process, and enjoy a flight of samples as you chat.

Columbia Lake Recreation Centre opens

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com After decades of discussion by the Akiqnuk First Nation about the need for a centre, years of planning and months of building, the Columbia Lake Recreation Centre opens today, Thursday, April 18th.

The Akisqnuk First Nation broke ground on the new facility in December 2017. Councillor Jason Nicholas helped to spearhead the project and is excited to see it finally come together.

“I was an athlete growing up without a rec centre. I definitely knew the need for one,” said Mr. Nicholas. “I wanted to give the youth the opportunity do something else other than make bad decisions.”

He said while the project grew beyond the initial vision, he is pleased with how everything came together.

“I hope that everybody can get a chance to come in and enjoy it,” Mr. Nicholas said.

Heather Rennebohm, Akisqnuk economic development officer, says time slots are already booking up for the new centre, which features an elevated walking track, fitness room, kitchen facilities and a large gymnasium space. New equipment has been trickling into the centre, with more expected to come soon.

“We’re asking people to bear with us a little bit on equipment. And while they’re bearing with us, make use of the running track and the classes, and the net sports, and all of that,” encouraged Ms. Rennebohm.

Groups so far that have signed up to use the new facility on Hwy 93/95 include pickleball, adult drop-in basketball, and a wellness and walking group. There are still slots in the schedule available for other ongoing or special events. The first ball hockey tournament is already

booked for April 26-27th. The centre is available for rent for special occasions too such as birthday parties, family reunions, or business functions.

Zumba Colleen Burgoyne will be teaching zumba classes in the new centre, hopefully by the end of this month or early in May. Ms. Burgoyne first tried zumba, a dance-style fitness program, with a friend about six years ago. Her friend taught Ms. Burgoyne what she knew of the Latin-inspired exercise. She enjoyed zumba and tossed around the idea of becoming an instructor one day. When it became clear that the Akisqnuk’s new recreation centre would be built, Ms. Burgoyne decided to take the leap and become a certified zumba instructor.

“I like how it’s very energizing,” said Ms. Burgoyne.

“Dance is one of my passions, and it’s a nice feeling after you’ve done the workout.”

She went to Calgary for training, and brings back certification and a desire to bring fitness to the Columbia Valley. Her hope is that people who take her class will find more confidence within themselves, that they will become healthier and that they will have fun.

“It’s more like a dance party, and I’m just looking to have fun with it,” the zumba instructor commented. “I just encourage anyone who wants to come out, to help lose some weight with me.”

Support through grief at hospice society

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com It’s been two months since Shawnna Warriner said goodbye to her husband, two months since their two children hugged their dad goodbye.

It’s been two months since Mike Warriner passed away.

The Warriner family had traveled to Arizona in February for a potential treatment option for his aggressive esophageal cancer. After a week at the Scottsdale hospital, they made the difficult decision to take him to a hospice centre.

“Once we were there I knew that’s exactly where we did need to be,” said Ms. Warriner. “The people that were there supporting us and helping us through it – it was amazing. It was an experience I definitely will never forget, being able to be there, especially with the kids.”

The support her family received helped them to get through life’s most impossible task.

“Our last few days with him and the kids with their dad, it was really special, and they made it exactly how we would’ve wanted it,” Ms. Warriner said. “We had friends and family there. We kind of hung out. We’d watch hockey on TV . . . It was very just real.”

After the family returned to Invermere, Ms. Warriner looked up information on the local hospice society.

“There isn’t a facility here (like they used in Arizona),” Ms. Warriner commented. “But they work all throughout the Valley. They’ll go into people’s homes, which I thought was really neat.”

From random hugs by strangers in the grocery store who knew her story, to donations, to friends who support in any way they can, the family has felt loved and cared for through this time, Ms. Warriner said. She has found some things that have helped her too, including going to the gym, journaling, and helping others facing similar sit-

uations.

“To be able to help support someone going through something similar – that’s a big one,” she said. She has already had someone going through a similar situation reach out to her, and she was able to talk with that person about the journey.

“If I could even help one person to learn what I’ve learnt through this, I’ll take that as a win,” said Ms. Warriner.

She expressed gratitude to the community at large, to friends and family, as well as to the District of Invermere – Ms. Warriner’s employer – for being so supportive to her through this time.

Given what the hospice society meant to their family, it was only natural to Ms. Warriner that she pass some auction items kindly donated for her family’s hour of need onto the Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley for their upcoming fundraiser event.

Mostly golf passes, for courses from Kelowna to Kimberley, will be part of this year’s auction thanks to the Warriner family.

Butterfly Gala To support the Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley, which works to support families going through the loss of a loved one, buy your tickets now for the 7th annual Butterfly Gala. The gala takes place Saturday, April 27th at Eagle Ranch Golf Resort.

Hop downtown to hug the Easter Bunny

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com The Easter Bunny has been busy scouting out the best hiding spots for his eggs in downtown Invermere. He’s been looking behind benches, next to stores and in all the bushes, checking for perfect places to leave his precious treats for all his little buddies to find.

On Saturday, April 20th, his colourful gifts will be hiding downtown, waiting for kids 12 and under to wake their parents, who will then give them breakfast, comb out their tangles, and tell them one hundred times to please, please put their shoes on because it’s time to go.

The Easter Bunny is giving the kids until the numbers on the clock say 11:00 to get their parents, sisters and brothers all the way downtown.

And then on your mark, get set, go! It’s time to find the Easter eggs!

Usually the Easter Bunny hides out to watch kids search for the presents he left them, but this year he wants to be found too.

His friend Cortney Pitts – who, if you can believe it, is also friends with Goofy and Mickey Mouse – said the Easter Bunny wants to give out hugs and high fives and smile for your selfies.

“The Easter Bunny is going to be strolling up and down the streets handing out treats and then he’ll be taking pictures with whoever wants a picture with him,” she said.

It’s going to be so super hard for the Easter Bunny to wait patiently for his favourite day of the year, so he might be extra hoppy and need a reminder to hold a grownup’s hand when he crosses the street. He asked Ms. Pitts to pretty please ask the newspaper to tell the kids to look both ways when they cross the road – even if they spot an egg hiding on the other side.

Stores with a picture of the Easter Bunny in their windows will also have treats inside, and might even have sales on for the grownups who go in with you.

Downtown Easter Egg Shop, Hop & Hunt The District of Invermere’s downtown Easter Egg Shop, Hop & Hunt will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 20th. The egg hunt will begin at 11 a.m. and will continue while supplies last.

Children and their families are also welcome to check out what the downtown businesses have in store for them. At least 38 downtown shops are jumping into the fun.

“Kids 12 and under and their families will go around to the downtown businesses in Invermere and collect treats and participate in different activities that the businesses are running,” said Ms. Pitts, the District’s events coordinator.

“They’re the ones to thank too because they take treats from their own pocket... It’s nice that they participate and kind of donate the treats for the kids.”

Among the Easter offerings, the Invermere Public Library will be doing Easter crafts and handing out treats, Fire Vixen Emporium will be doing face painting, and Rainbow International will have a table downtown with colouring pages for kids.

The Artym Gallery is also having an interactive Easter exhibition with artist Alex Fong, who will be at the gallery from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m..

“He’s going to bring a big canvas with sketched-out eggs already painted on it so they’re inviting families to come on in and paint an egg on his canvas that he’ll be creating,” Ms. Pitts said.

“I think it will be a fun day. The businesses are excited, and I’m excited,” she said. “It’s going to be a great opportunity to bring families down into our downtown and involve the businesses. It’s great to see everybody out and about and seeing the vibrant downtown come to life.”

Ms. Pitts encourages everyone “to stick around and shop and eat lunch at our local downtown businesses” once the eggs have been collected. She also asks drivers to be mindful around the Easter egg hunt.

Children need to accompanied by an adult when they collect their treats in the businesses.

Adult Easter Egg Hunt The third annual Adult Easter Egg Hunt at Hopkins Harvest featuring The Hot Spot will take place on Friday, April 19th at 3 p.m. The adults-only event, which runs until 8 p.m., has been known to include prizes that would make the Easter Bunny blush.

Radium Hot Springs The Radium library is holding an Easter Egg Scavenger Hunt from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 20th. Entry is by donation with proceeds going to the library. In addition to the scavenger hunt, there will be crafts and goodie bags.

Edgewater Sunday, April 21st 8:30 to 11 a.m.: pancake breakfast and Easter egg hunt at the Edgewater Community Hall. $6 for breakfast; the hunt is free.

Canal Flats Sunday, April 21st is when the Easter bunny hops his way to Canal Flats. Meet at the civic centre at noon for free hot dogs and cake. At 1 p.m. sharp the easter egg hunt begins.

Panorama Mountain Resort Panorama Mountain Resort also hosts an Easter-palooza weekend. Sunday, April 21st, head to the hiill for a chocolage egg hunt for little ones 5 years and under in the Discovery Zone at 9 a.m. At 10:15 there is an easter egg hunt for children aged 6-12. Starting at 12 pm., search for a golden egg hidden somewhere in the upper village, and deliver it to guest services for some great prizes.

Submitted by Artym Gallery With spring in full swing, The Artym Gallery is welcoming the work of two popular artists for a unique exhibition celebrating spring, Easter, and the long weekend!

The walls of our downtown gallery have been adorned with new arrivals from gallery artists Alex Fong and Anita McComas. Animal and nature lovers of the Valley won’t want to miss the combined works of these artists. The exhibition begins on Saturday, April 20th with an Alex Fong fun watercolour activity.

This will be the very first dual show combining the works of Alex Fong and Anita McComas. Both of these Kelowna based artists capture the beauty of nature in their own unique ways. Ms. McComas is known for her overlapping “riotous strokes” of beautiful bold colour, and a genuine sense of movement rooting her piece in the natural world. She brings bears, owls and landscapes to life with her energetic brushstrokes. Her career has really taken off and this will be her first large scale show at the Artym Gallery. This weekend is the perfect opportunity to come and see why her pieces make the perfect addition to any home or business.

Mr. Fong is always a lovely artist to have at the gal-

lery. Since the gallery first opened, 18 years ago, it’s hard to think of a year that hasn’t had an appearance from him. With 13 new works from Mr. Fong, it will be hard not to fall in love with one of his latest paintings. His collection is full of natural elements such as waterfalls, mountain landscapes, bighorn sheep, and even a skier or snowboarder to reminisce about the change of seasons.

His dreamlike watercolour pieces with beautiful chickadees and whimsical confetti dots are like being lost in thoughts of happiness.

Mr. Fong will be in attendance on Saturday from 11-3 p.m. with a fun Easter activity in tow! He has sketched a variety of Easter eggs onto a canvas for adults to come paint. Anyone who helps paint an Easter egg at the event will be entered to win the unique collaborative piece. So stop by and get inspired by the lovely works of Anita McComas and Alex Fong, and you’ll get to add your own artistic flare onto a canvas.

YOUR MONEY What is ALDA? Submitted by Sara Worley & Brendan Donahue Investment Advisors, Manulife Securities Incorporated Over the past decade or so, Canadians have become increasingly worried about outliving their money. The perfect storm of rising life expectancies, low interest rates and the first wave of baby boomers converting their RRSPs to RRIFs has inspired the federal government to come up with a creative solution. That proposed solution is called the Advanced Life Deferred Annuity (ALDA).

How does it work?

Currently, the most common registered plan decumulation solution is a RRIF, which requires minimum percentage withdrawals annually. Canadians can defer realizing any taxable income from their RRIFs until the year they turn 72.

If approved, an ALDA would permit up to 25 per cent of a person’s registered investment accounts to be used to purchase an annuity which would not have to start paying until the year the plan holder turns 85. The ALDA would become available in 2020 and lifetime maximum would start at $150,000 and would be indexed to inflation.

Outliving one’s money The ALDA offers many interesting angles for those who don’t want to be forced to de-register their RRIFs too soon. Perhaps the most common could be the worry that one might outlive their money.

Those with defined benefit pension plans receive a guaranteed monthly income, which lasts the entirety of their lives. Those without a defined benefit pension plan, however, might worry that they will outlive their savings. The ALDA would act as an insurance policy against living too long, thus helping to mitigate longevity risk.

Paying Less Tax The other main advantage of an ALDA would be potential tax-savings.

For example, those who are still working might not want to take too much money out of their RRIFs just yet, especially if those withdrawals will push them into a

higher tax bracket or result in an Old Age Security (OAS) recovery tax. The option to defer some of their RRIF income to a later date might allow them to continue working longer.

Others who may benefit from ALDA are those who have other taxable assets they would like to deal with before their RRIFs, such as a corporation or real estate holdings. Deferring some of one’s taxable income until a later date could allow a self-employed person to wind down these assets sooner than they could have if they were forced to take full income from their RRIFs. Low-risk investors The ALDA could also be a good solution for lowrisk investors who like income certainty. Currently, their options include GICs, low-risk bonds, fixed income mutual funds and regular annuities. The addition of the ALDA would allow these investors another diversification strategy that suits their risk tolerance.

Extra-long life expectancy The ALDA might also be an interesting strategy for those who worry about living too long but don’t want to lock up all of their money in an annuity. For example, Joe wants to spend his money during his lifetime, but wants an insurance policy in case he lives longer than expected. He sets up an ALDA to start paying at age 85 and reasons that if he lives that long, he will have enough income to support himself between CPP, OAS and the guaranteed income from his ALDA. Final thoughts If passed, the ALDA would be another option to help people in certain retirement income scenarios. In particular, those who will have higher income during their first several years of retirement.

Nobody likes to pay more than their fair share of tax, but tax deferral at all costs is not always beneficial. Sometimes, less lifetime tax is paid and a larger estate created by taking early RRSP/RRIF withdrawals, rather than deferring taxation too far into the future.

Accordion “still always big in demand”

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Franz Grasegger may have left Germany 31 years ago, but memories of the accordion player’s talent still linger in his homeland decades after he crossed the ocean and settled in the Columbia Valley.

When German band Koitaboch Musi booked a month-long gig in the United States and learned that their accordion player couldn’t manage the trip, Franz was the first person they called.

“They reached out to me after all those years so I thought that was pretty cool,” he said. “That band still remembers me from the band that I used to play in...

Everybody kind of knows each other in the music world back home.”

Franz agreed to join forces and will be joining Koitaboch Musi for JulyFest with

a series of shows in St. Louis, Missouri.

“It’s going to be a big event, and we’ll be playing 28 nights, like, no rest for the wicked,” he said.

Ever since he was five or six years old, the accordion has comprised the soundtrack to Franz’s life. That’s when his late brother Tony, who was five years older than Franz, took up the instrument.

When Tony moved on to an apprenticeship, Franz, then a boy of 10, started taking formal lessons too.

“Mom just saved up all the money she could save and paid for our lessons and that kind of inspired me because my older brother played the accordion and I wanted to be just like him,” he said.

At around 12 years old, Franz took to the stage in a band of children. They performed for about 600 people. After the Continued on page 24 . . .

Wildsight AGM includes screening of award-winning documentary Submitted by Wildsight Invermere Wildsight Invermere is hosting a community event on Saturday, April 27th at 7pm, focusing on trees and our deep roots in our community.

The evening features a short AGM at 7 p.m., followed by a screening of the award-winning documentary, Treeline: A Story Written in Rings, at 7:30 p.m.

This is a chance for the public to find out more about Wildsight Invermere’s initiatives that go beyond taking care of our forests, watersheds and wildlife. This is the not-for-profit’s 30th year since it began as part of the East Kootenay Environmental Society in 1989. Find out about its Columbia Valley Electric Vehicle Share program that aims to be the first 100 per cent electric vehicle share program in rural Canada and serve as an integral step towards transitioning Columbia Valley communities to low-carbon transportation use.

The 40-minute documentary by Canadian director Jordan Manley (and presented by Patagonia Films) allows the

viewer to experience our human relationship with trees through the eyes of skiers, snowboarders, scientists and healers. The evocative footage showcases the beauty of Japan’s birch forests, the towering power of B.C.’s cedars and the ancient bristle cone pines of Nevada. Columbia Valley residents are already familiar with one of the film’s characters. Suzanne Simard, a forest ecologist who has tested theories about how trees communicate with other trees, was a special guest at the 2018 Wings Over the Rockies Festival.

Following the film screening, there will be an update on forestry in the Columbia Valley by John Bergenske, Wildsight Conservation Director.

Everyone is welcome. Refreshments and goodies will be served. The film is by donation.

By Lara McCormack Ever since I was a child, I associated eggs with spring when everything outside is growing, greening up, shedding the winter dust. Strangely enough, in ancient symbolism, eggs represent rebirth. Not only holding religious significance through history, eggs play a key role in many celebration foods at the time of Easter.

I remember being fascinated with the coloured shells that lay in the coop when I visited my grandparents farm in Eastern Alberta. I was more fascinated to learn where eggs come from! Looking back, I realized how lucky I was being able to pick my own eggs not only to cook and bake with, but to also make my very own pysanka for Easter. Growing up in a Ukrainian heritage, I was so excited to make these beautiful eggs with my Baba and Mom. When we would grow tired from working on the eggs, that involved creating a design with beeswax and dyeing them, we would turn to the kitchen where we would prepare various dishes for an Easter celebration.

The egg was always the most important dish and versatile in so many ways.

In today’s time, the egg is getting a bad rap and let’s admit, there is so much discussion about whether they are good for us, how much is OK and questions about a link to contribution of certain illnesses. What I have learned as a chef is using them in moderation works best for my family and me. Allergies to eggs are real and I am seeing it more and more working with the public. There are many substitutions for eggs in recipes that do work for the most part while there will always be a change in the flavour and texture.

According to food historians, humans have been

sometimes there is nothing better than a not quite hardboiled egg with a pinch of salt, fresh ground pepper and your favourite chopped herbs. The following recipe is less fancy than quiche, fabulous for grab-and-go mornings and perfect for serving at Easter brunch.

Egg & Spinach Bakes YIELDS: 12 servings TOTAL TIME:45 minutes INGREDIENTS – get your hands on the freshest, local ingredients you can, perferably organic. Eggs and spinach are available at local farms and grocers in our Valley.

• 1 (14.1 oz.) package refrigerated rolled piecrust • 4 large eggs • 3/4 c. half-and-half cream • 10-oz. frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry or 2 cups of lightly steamed spinach • 2 scallions, chopped • 1 tbsp. fresh dill, chopped • 2 tsp. Dijon mustard • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

The word egg is traced to a prehistoric Indo-European source related to words for ‘bird’. The domestication of fowl greatly increased the availability of eggs to ancient cultures. Culinary evidence confirms breads and cakes using eggs were made by Ancient Egyptian and Roman peoples with the reason most often sited that the eggs worked as binding (thickening) agents.

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 375°F with the rack in the lowest position. Unroll piecrust and cut into 12 (4-inch) rounds.

Fit rounds into a lightly greased 12-cup muffin tin, pressing up and slightly over sides of each cup. Chill 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, whisk together eggs, half-and-half, spinach, scallions, dill, mustard, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Spoon into crusts, dividing evenly.

Bake until puffed and set, 22 to 25 minutes.

Serve warm.

They also got to meet with the Canadian contingent and network with other women in the traditionally male-dominated gaming industry.

“We are an anomaly” as a female-owned and operated shop, Ms. Berrington said, but they are set to benefit from the fastest-growing demographic in gaming: women.

While female customers make up 10 to 15 per cent of the customer base in some shops, half of the shoppers at Mainstreet Fun and Games are females. Moms in search of family games are some of their keenest customers.

“It’s an exciting time to be women in a game store,” says Ms. Connell. “Our Valley particularly in the summer is a very specific market. They are families wanting to connect. The thing we always go back to is: ‘Will this work for our families? Will it work for the people who are trying to have a family experience while they’re here away from the screens?’”

Ms. Connell and Ms. Berrington have seen so many customers go from hating board games to enjoying them that they can’t pick out a specific example.

“We see it all the time,” Ms. Connell says. “We have so many moms or dads that will come in with their arms crossed and go ‘I hate board games.’”

Her response is to pull out a game and say: “You think you hate board games, but let’s try this.”

The customer reactions typically run along these lines: “They go ‘oh, I didn’t hate it and that was actually kind of fun and it only took 20 minutes and I didn’t want to gouge my eyes out,’” Ms. Connell said. “It’s amazing to watch somebody go from ‘I hate board games’ to playing Azul, which is a spectacularly beautiful and interesting and intricate game that they never thought they would play.”

While Ms. Connell and Ms. Berrington went to the Reno trade show as a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity, they were so inspired that they are already daydreaming of going back.

When it’s all fun and games... and a little dust

With 6,000 new games released every year and limited shelf space in their shop, the ladies at Mainstreet Fun and Games have to carefully curate the selection they bring to the Valley.

Last month Dee Connell and Deanna Berrington travelled to Reno for a massive Game Manufacturers Association trade show, where they attended workshops and events by day and played brand-new games long into the night. They were so busy they said they didn’t go outside for five days.

“We found some amazing gems,” Ms. Connell said. “We played hundreds of games while we were there... It’s so hard because we want all of them.”

While they weren’t able to cram the thousands of games they saw into their suitcases, they returned with around 30 games and have more on order.

“We came back with so many new ideas” she said. Those ideas include painting contests, swords and sorcery camps, and live-action play – like spy games or Capture The Flag – that could include dramatic staged deaths.

In addition to checking out the games of the future and meeting designers and distributers, Ms. Berrington said they got to connect with other game-store owners who understand “the frustrations and the joys and the excitement.”

What possible frustrations could there be inside a game store? Dusting, she said.

“So much dusting” to be precise.

One of their highlights was playing a storytelling game called Wing It with the “lovely little sweetheart who designed the game,” Ms. Connell said. “Just the opportunity to play a game with someone who made it, that’s super cool... Creating the stories and her enjoying our pleasure of the game was a thrill.” . . . ‘Accordian’ from 19 show, his mother asked if he had felt anxious playing in front of the crowd.

He hadn’t.

“I’ve never really been nervous when I play my accordion in front of people,” he said. “If I had to speak in front of people without my accordion I would totally freak out, but if have my accordion on my chest I feel totally comfortable.”

As the brothers grew, so did their appreciation for their instrument of choice. They travelled together and arrived in the Valley where they performed at the Black Forest Restaurant in the ‘80s and ‘90s.

“We used to play together a lot,” Franz recalled, adding that he and Tony performed across the United States before Tony moved away. He died in 2010.

Losing his brother hasn’t quieted Franz’ enthusiasm for performing.

“It’s just nice to put a smile on people’s faces and it’s nice that the accordion is actually still always big in demand,” he said. “A lot of people of

make fun of it and so many people actually really appreciate it and love it.”

Nowadays accordions are growing in popularity, he said, and can be found everywhere from classical music to hard rock.

“I played bass as well and guitar but I always preferred, always loved, the accordion,” he said. “It’s amazing what you can do with it too. I mean an accordion is almost like a piano. You can do anything if you’re good enough.

It doesn’t really limit you.”

His biggest fans can follow him to the Hofbräuhaus in St. Louis, Missouri for his JulyFest shows with Koitaboch Musi. There they will perform traditional German, Bavarian, Austrian polka music as well as contemporary music.

Those wanting to enjoy the accordion closer to home can check out his gig with the band L8 at Panorama Mountain Resort on Sunday, April 21st, the last day of the ski season. L8 will be performing from 12 to 5 p.m. at the Great Hall patio.

By Shannon McGinty Lake Windermere Ambassadors As the ice melts and the weather warms we are all excited to get out and enjoy the lake, but we can’t forget about who we share the lake with!

There have been 165 bird species seen on Lake Windermere. Add in all of the fish and mammals and we become one small part of the bigger picture. So how can we share the lake in a way that allows all species to thrive? There are many ways to respect other species on the lake. Below are a few of the key ones to consider.

Safe distances Most of us love observing wildlife, but we must be sure to do so from a safe distance to avoid stressing them out.

There is no set distance to stay away from all animals as it changes upon species, season, and the size of their flock or herd.

Do your best to keep as much distance as possible between yourself and wildlife to provide ample room for the animal to escape in case they feel threatened. Boaters should avoid deliberately approaching waterbirds and paddling into vegetated areas that serve as valuable habitat and feeding grounds for waterbirds.

Respecting seasonal sensitivities Each season presents a new challenge for all species, whether it be their mating season, migration or hibernation, there are unique challenges. We know that Lake Windermere and the surrounding

Noise level

Humans can be seen as visitors to the environment in which wildlife has lived for much longer! As we would be upset with noisy neighbours moving in, the wildlife may also be bothered by our noise levels. Wildlife depends on the ability to hear and be heard for activities like finding habitat and mates, avoiding predators, protecting young and establishing territory. We can do our part by reducing our noise output whenever possible.

So, when you get out onto the lake this year, don’t forget this is a home to many other species. Lets try to be the best house guests!

New Official Community Plan Process Soon to be Underway in Area G Regional District of East Kootenay The RDEK Board of Directors has approved a new planning process to review and update the Steamboat – Jubilee Mountain Official Community Plan in Electoral Area G. “The current Official Community Plan (OCP) was adopted in 2006 and this process will provide us with an opportunity to check-in with residents to determine what is still relevant and where changes may be required to the

plan,” said RDEK Electoral Area G Director Gerry Wilkie. “One aspect of the OCP review that many residents of Edgewater will be eager to learn more about will be working on the community’s vision for the old Credit Union and Improvement District buildings in town.”

The OCP review extends well beyond the boundaries of Edgewater, as the plan covers most of the private land in Area G. “The plan area covers Wilmer, the rural areas around Radium, and extends north to Brisco and Spillimacheen,” explained RDEK Planner Michele Bates, who will be leading the project. “Aside from the general review and check-in, we also hope to explore new opportunities for

S OBITUARY S Thorson, Barbara June 1932 – 2019

On Saturday, April 6, 2019, Barbara June Thorson passed away at home in Cranbrook at the age of 87 years. She was born in Spokane Washington on March 5, 1932.

Barb was a very adventurous and outgoing lady. She enjoyed her life to the fullest. Barb was a certified life guard and swim instructor and she fearlessly rode horses until her 40s. She also enjoyed figure skating in Billings, MT and Invermere.

She moved to Northwest Montana in early 60s, on to Billing, Montana in the late 1960s and then back to the Flathead in the late 70s. In 1979 she moved to Invermere, BC and married George Thorson in 1980. She was widowed in 1996 and moved to Cranbrook in 2015.

Mom loved to make friends and share with people. She loved her family and inspired each of her children and grandchildren with her courage, spunk, amazing life stories and deep soul.

Mom was highly spiritual and devoted to her studies of God, the Bible and spiritual writings. She was a seeker of and listener for the “Truth”, she was intrigued by the mysterious and unexplained. She had an adventurous spirit and walked the path less traveled. She loved the earth, pine trees, nature, Flathead Lake in Montana and the Canadian Rockies peaks out her window in Invermere. She studied Native American cultures through direct experience and her own research.

Her sense of humor often came in unexpected silly and prankster-like ways. She was creative and a talented writer of beautiful and meaningful poetry and stories. Her greatest desire was to share the beautiful words than came through her. She was a member of the Writers Guild in Invermere for many years and joined the writer’s group in Cranbrook upon her move. Several of her poems were published in the Columbia Valley Pioneer.

Barb is survived by her sister, Janet Smith of Polson, Montana her daughter, Brenda Westwood in Kila, Montana, her son Paul Carrier and his wife Tamara in Vancouver, Washington as well as the father of her two children, Donald Carrier and his wife of 45 years, Gladys. She has 5 grandchildren, Jason Steiner in Montana, Tabitha Chamberlin in Colorado, Paul Carrier, Jr in Japan, Brandon Carrier in Hawaii and Natasha Arrasmith in Washington, and 8 great grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at Barbara’s cozy apartment on Saturday, April 20, 2019 from 2-4pm, 1918-C Kelowna Crescent, Cranbrook. In lieu of flowers, donations are gratefully accepted to a charity of choice.

S OBITUARY S Kueller, Stefan ‘Steve’

July 14, 1937 ~ April 8, 2019 Mr. Stefan ‘Steve’ Kueller passed away at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, Medicine Hat, Alberta, on Monday, April 8, 2019, at the age of 81 years.

Steve is survived by his children, Sandra (Derrick), Carole, Steven, Eric and their families. His memory will be cherished by his sister, Rose Morfitt as well as his nieces and nephews in the Pomreinke family. He was predeceased by his wife, Sharon; sister, Maria (Mary) Pomreinke and a brother, Michael.

Steve was born in Budapest, Hungary and immigrated to Canada in 1956. After working a short time in Ontario, he moved out west, settling in Maple Creek, SK. Steve retired with Sharon in Medicine Hat after working for Parks Canada in various locations throughout Alberta and BC. Steve was known for his tireless work ethic and skilled craftsmanship in addition to his generosity and sense of humour. He was a carpenter by trade but would tackle jobs involving other trades with equal confidence. His animated style while telling a story amused all that he shared them with.

Steve recently spent lots of his time helping out at the Shell on Dunmore Road. He talked fondly of many of the staff members who welcomed him and embraced him as family. Special thanks to the friends who called 911, EMS who provided emergency response, MHRH Emergency Room staff and physicians for their valiant efforts and to the ICU Staff for their care and compassion.

A Celebration of Steve’s life was held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 - 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat, Alberta, on Monday, April 15, 2019, at 1:00 p.m. Interment will take place in the Maple Creek Cemetery at a future date. Leafy Spurge: Scourge of the Columbia Valley East Kootenay Invasive Specis Council

Listed as a provincially regulated species, leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula) is an invasive weed which has increasingly negative impacts to the Columbia Valley.

This plant thrives in open rangeland, inhibits the growth of native species, and can be toxic to grazing animals.

It has become well established in the Upper Columbia Valley around Radium, likely introduced with contaminated hay and further spread via heavy equipment.

The East Kootenay Invasive Species Council (EKISC) has collaborated with the Columbia Valley Local Conservation Fund to form a long-term management strategy - which has shown great success! At the completion of its eighth year, the initial containment area has been reduced.

“A significant amount of land has been recovered, and outlying leafy spurge sites are now being targeted,” states EKISC’s Program Manager Todd Larsen. “It is fantastic to see these previously degraded grasslands being restored to support functional native ecosystems.”

It’s important for the public to identify and report the plant as well; identification tips and easy reporting platform is made easier with the Report-a-Weed App, available for Android and Apple products.

While the most common problem his customers have is losing data when their laptops crash, he can help with much more than data retrieval. He repairs computers, Xboxes and TVs and is available for service calls and onsite work. He’s also happy to mount TVs for his customers.

“We can usually come to a solution for pretty much any problem,” he said, adding that he provides his customers with estimates before he starts on their projects and that he offers “an affordable solution to getting your computer fixed when it breaks.”

Mr. Janzen’s office is newly relocated inside of a larger office: The Mountain Hub – a co-working space where entrepreneurs can get their businesses growing. The day he arrived to set up his office earlier this month, Mr. Janzen had two walk-in customers before he was officially open for business.

The stream of traffic continued all through his first week, with 15 repairs lined up or completed by the time he sat down to chat with the Pioneer. That’s five times more business than he was getting when he worked from the attic in his home between Fairmont and Windermere.

“It was very isolated,” he said. “I would sit at home and watch TV and nobody would show up.”

He figured that wasn’t due to a lack of demand for his services but because his potential customers would get confused about how to find his home or opt out of making the effort of getting to his place.

Now the fixer has solved that problem too. In his new location in downtown Invermere, customers can easily pop by to drop off their broken laptops and return to collect their newly-found files and fixed-up machines.

Fixing “weird problems” and retrieving long lost files at new Valley business

Murray Janzen harvested my brain and popped it into a different body. The surgery was painless but took some effort – and a grimace – as he pried my warped old laptop apart, retrieved the harddrive brain and installed it in an identical refurbished Mac he happened to have for sale.

Including the new-to-me Mac, Mr. Janzen had 10 computers crammed into his office at The Mountain Hub when we met. There’s the standard one on his desk and a few on a cabinet. The rest are hiding like Easter eggs in his drawers and cupboards.

Ever since he bought a new computer that wouldn’t work from the start due to a faulty motherboard, he’s been interested in coaxing laptops and desktop machines to get back to business.

“There’s a plethora of weird problems that computers can have,” he said, adding that he’s made a career out of fixing them. He worked for Shaw and Telus before starting Zen Technologies in the Valley a year ago.

“I just love the process of being able to put all these crazy parts together,” he said.

“Bringing old electronics back to life is really satisfying.”

Also satisfying is reuniting his clients with their important files after their computers give up the ghost.

When one of his customers sought help with a broken computer that contained photos she could no longer access of her deceased husband, Mr. Jenzen retrieved the photos and presented them to the overjoyed widow.

“That’s very sentimental data to be losing,” he said. “I absolutely love being able to

Under the Land Code, any grant or disposition of a lease, license, easement or permit on Reserve to a non-Shuswap member requires the written consent of Shuswap Chief and Council (s. 30.5). Additionally, no interest in the Reserve can be transferred or assigned (by way of leasehold or otherwise) without the written consent of Council (s. 35.3). Moreover, any document which purports to grant or dispose of such interests without Council consent will be deemed void (s. 30.3).

Please be advised that when purchasing property interests located on Shuswap Indian Reserve No. 0 (the “Reserve”), those interests will be subject to the Shuswap Indian Band Property Taxation Law, 2008 (“Taxation Law”), and the Shuswap Indian Band Property Assessment Law, 2008 (the “Assessment Law”)

Furthermore, the Land Code requires that all interests in the Reserve be registered in the First Nation Lands Register, absent which they will not be enforceable (s. 28). As a result, “buckshee leases” (leases which have not followed the appropriate procedures set out in the Land Code and which have not been registered accordingly) are not enforceable and are strongly discouraged by the Shuswap Indian Band.

The Taxation Law also requires that all interests in the Reserve be registered with the British Columbia Assessment Authority (“BCAA”)

Finally, we note that pursuant to the Land Code, Shuswap Indian Band has the right to make laws on a variety of land related matters which may impact on the property to be purchased.

Given this, we ask that all potential buyers or sellers of property on Reserve be aware of the Land Code authority. We further ask that you direct all interested in purchasing property on the Reserve to make an appointment with the Shuswap Indian Band Lands Department to discuss these matters at (250) 341-3678 (Ext. #1014), or landclerk@shuswapband.net. For the property assessment process, the Shuswap Indian Band has contracted with the British Columbia Assessment Authority (BCAA) to assess real property. BCAA uses the guidelines set out in the Shuswap Indian Band’s Assessment Law. Properties are assessed at actual value as of July 1 of the year during which the assessment roll is completed. The value is determined, considering the physical condition and permitted use of the property, on October 31 (December 31 for manufactured homes).

Easter means death is doorway to life

By Fr. Jojo Augustin St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Why do you look for the living among the dead?

“This Jesus God raised up, and of that all of us are witnesses” (Acts: 2: 32) Easter is an event which commemorates the victory of Jesus, the son of God over sin and death through his death and the resurrection from the dead.

His resurrection confirmed that he is the Son of God and Saviour of the world. Meditating upon this mystery, St. John writes: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life” (John 3:16).

Even though the Jewish religious authorities with the support of the Roman political authorities dumped him as a detestable and hopeless criminal, God raised him up in the glory of Resurrection as his own beloved Son. The first speech of St. Peter immediately after the Pentecostal experience in Jerusalem proclaims the fact as follows: “He was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh experience corruption. This Jesus God raised up and that all of us are witnesses” (Acts 2:32).

Since the apostles were witnesses to Jesus’ earthly ministry and to the paschal mystery of his passion, death,

and resurrection, they were confirmed in their faith.

Again, in his second speech at Solomon’s portico of the Jerusalem temple Peter proclaims the fact of Jesus’ resurrection as follows: “The author of life you put to death, but he raised him from the dead; of this we are witnesses” (Act 3:15). Ever since the Easter event, death is not malady or condemnation for the believers in Christ but it is the doorway to the glorious life of eternity with God, the fullness of life.

“Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, He has risen” (Luke 24:5).

This question of the angel to the women reminds us of our obligation to look beyond the ordinary human situations, for God experience. We have to pass over from the ordinary human realm to the eternal life. For us he is the Way, Life and Truth (John 14:4-6). His life was dedicated to the service of the sinful and suffering human beings. He offered his compassionate love to the poor, sick and abandoned people. He healed them and brought them to God offering an experience of His compassionate love. He taught them that they are children of God the Father who is filled with love, mercy and compassion.

He taught them to look beyond. Christian life is a life of Passover looking far beyond.

Resurrection of Jesus is a Passover from this life of the Heavenly Father. In the Eucharistic celebration (Holy Mass) we commemorate this mystery and participate in it. Hence Christian life is a participation in the Resurrected life of Jesus Christ, giving fulfilment to our life.
