Multiple museums offer glimpse into the past Alder Grove Heritage Society Telephone Museum & Community Archives The F.J. Hart/BC Tel Building at 3190 271st St. is a simple, one-storey pre-fabricated wood commercial building built in 1910. It housed a bank, a home improvement store, and realty office. It was later sold to the BC Telephone Company and operated as the local telephone exchange until 1952. Since 1993, it has been home to the Alder Grove Heritage Society’s telephone museum and community archives.

BC Farm Museum A visit to the BC Farm Museum is like taking a trip back to a simpler time, when agriculture focused on hard work and survival.

The museum is home to the largest collection of agricultural and pioneer artifacts in the province, making it a must-see for any history buff – regardless of how familiar with farming they may be. While visitors explore the various galleries, they are given the opportunity to immerse themselves in the stories of our pioneer ancestors and their struggles to flourish in a new environment.

Flight museum

In summer 2017, the museum unveiled several new murals – created by local artists – which depict B.C.’s farming history.

Museum of Flight Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of nearly 30 classic aircraft.

It has been located at the Langley Regional Airport since 1996, and is a must-see for any aviation enthusiast. The facility takes a ‘handson’ approach to educating the public about the impact that Canada has had on the history of aviation.

Multiple museums offer glimpse into the past Heritage CN Station Fort Langley’s CN Station, at 23245 Mavis St., is operated by the volunteer, non-profit Langley Heritage Society. It s a popular location for wedding and graduation photographs ($20 donation appreciated). The station was built for the Canadian Northern Railway in 1915 as agriculture expanded and new settlement drew people into the Fraser Valley. Absorbed by the Canadian National Railway in 1918, its life as a passenger station spanned the steam through diesel eras until 1980. Originally located 240 metres to the west, the station was moved in 1983 by Langley Heritage Society volunteers; the building was declared a municipal heritage site in 1984.

Langley Memorial Hospital Museum Tucked away inside Michaud House in Langley City is an archival museum dedicated to preserving the history of Langley Memorial Hospital and the people who built it, staffed it, and made it run. The museum is open by appointment. The committee of volunteers who run it is comprised almost entirely of former nurses, many of whom worked at LMH. The volunteers host celebratory teas, and recently held a wine-and-cheese reception for retired doctors in the historic home’s parlour. Michaud House is at 5202 204th St., two blocks south of Langley City hall.

Langley Centennial Museum This Township of Langley-owned and operated historical centre, located at 9135 King St. in Fort Langley, has been educating generations of Langley residents and visitors for the last 60 years on a wide variety of topics, with an emphasis on art, history and the sciences.

The 3,500-square-foot facility continues to grow and evolve with each passing decade, welcoming upwards of 30,000 visitors a year. In fact, the Township is currently planning to build a new, state-of-the-art facility to house this museum in Fort Langley.

The museum is also host to many public and school programs committed to preserving Langley’s history and culture.

Exhibits in the main gallery change regularly so there’s always something new to see.

Open seven days a week, check their website museum.tol.ca for updates on new exhibits throughout the year.

CN Station

Fort Langley National Historic Site Originally the location of Hudson’s Bay Company’s trading post, the Fort Langley National Historic Site has been educating people on the fur trade for generations and has an uncanny ability to whisk visitors away to a different era; one free from smartphones and hashtags.

This interactive museum allows visitors to explore various historical-type buildings, including but not limited to, a blacksmith, a cooperage, and the storehouse – the latter is said to be the oldest building in B.C. This historical landmark is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week. They also host several special events throughout the year.

Langley Fire Apparatus Museum Langley Fire Apparatus museum, operated by Brian Beard, is a mecca of historical firefighting equipment. His vision started in the mid-1970s, when he acquired the first pieces of his collection from a Vancouver auction. That initial acquisition has grown into one of the finest collections of firefighting historical memorabilia in Western Canada.

Langley will be hopping with craft beer – four new breweries open Taps are flowing in Langley with the construction of four new breweries underway that are expected to open on various dates this year.

Langley’s self-proclaimed “Craft Beer Tourist” Tim LaHay has been tasting beers locally and around the world for the past 2.5 years, and shares his experiences on his Instagram account to more than 21,000 followers.

LaHay said the growing craft beer scene in Langley is something he’s been “dreaming of.”

“It’s great to see all these people being able to open up.” According to LaHay, craft beer is so popular because people want to support local product.

“You walk in, and see people making beer.

They’re [brewers] all super friendly, and engage customers. It’s much like people who go to the local baker or produce place because they know it’s made down the street with quality ingredients.”

LaHay also explained that craft beer is a “conversation piece.” “Craft beer is something you take your time with. There’s a beer out there for everyone when it comes to craft beer.”

While the community has two well-established drinking holes – Dead Frog Brewing and Trading Post Brewery – there’s always room for more beer, according to the owner of Camp Beer Co., which is set to open this summer. “Everybody needs more craft breweries,” said Kevin Larsen, co-owner of Camp Beer.

The brewery is being constructed in the site of the old Langley bingo hall at 19664 64 Ave. Larsen and his wife Tammy co-own Camp Beer Co. with Jamie Schreder and his wife Alex. The brewery will be “mid-sized,” serving “small batch, fresh craft beer,” Larsen explained.

Another highlight of the brewery is a 2,000-square-feet outdoor patio with glass roll-up doors, a fire pit, and lighting that will provide a “family-friendly, outdoor space.”

For now, the brewery doesn’t have any core beers in mind, but Larsen said the business will “let the people of Langley tell us what they want.” On tap will be everything from sour and dark beers, to saisons and specialized sessionable beers.

Larsen aims to offer a brewery with a more recreational and comfortable feel, where guests can lounge and play a game of cards, or read a book while enjoying a beer.

Over at Farm Country Brewing, in downtown Langley City at 20555 56th Ave., owners Arnold Tobler and Travis Keyworth have their sights set on opening the doors before the end of summer.

“We’re going to focus on sessionable beers.

Beers that people can drink multiples of. Crisp,

well-balanced beer. We like the weird beers as well, and there will probably be a bit of that but for the most part you want to socialize over a few beers, so this is the place to come and do that,” Tobler said.

When asked about the other breweries popping up around the same time, Tobler said “nobody sees each other as competition,” and added Trading Post Brewery has been a huge help to them.

Tobler said the four new breweries are planning a special collaboration brew that is set to be released at the Fort Langley Beer and Food Festival on the May long weekend. “It’s long overdue,” Tobler said of the Langley craft beer industry.

Farm Country Brewing

“I think it’s so cool we are part of it, and helping it grow.” Farm Country Brewing is planned to have an 80-person tasting room, a patio that seats 20 people, and a special events area.

Further into North Langley is Smugglers’ Trail Caskworks, which is under construction at 9339 200A St., and is set to open in the fall.

Smugglers’ Trail beer is already sold in liquor stores across the province, as owner Steve Gregorig explained the brewery started “backwards.”

Five Roads Brewing

Gregorig co-owns the brewery with Jamie Overgaard, and the two friends have been home brewing together for some time. In order to get their beers out the door, Gregorig said they have been contract brewing at Craft Collective Beerworks in Vancouver.

Once the brewery opens, the 5400-square-feet area will accommodate 88 guests inside, and 40 guests on an outdoor patio.

One of the unique features at Smuggler’s Trail Caskworks is that the brewery will use beer engines to hand pump some of the drinks. “It adds a nice, velvety mouth-feel to the beer,” Gregorig explained.

Another feature is a special fundraiser beer called Orion 1-1, where $1 per each bottle sold will be donated to the Honour House Society – a foundation that supports veterans and military personnel.

Honour House was chosen because Gregorig’s close friend, Captain Trevor Greene, was the victim of an axe attack to the head while deployed overseas in Afghanistan in 2006, and was helped by Honour House.

Last, but not least, Five Roads Brewing Co. located at #1-6263 202nd St., is almost ready for guests, as owner Aaron Fourt predicts doors will open mid-April.

Dead Frog

The name was inspired by the Murrayville’s five corners intersection, and the fact that five people have been involved in this project. “We have a great team here, and a great concept of what we’re doing. It’s a great community hub.” added Fourt.

Head brewer Patrick Moore will be bringing more than 20 years of brewing experience to Five Roads.

“The industry itself is like no other. Everyone gets along – it’s very strange. People say ‘oh these other breweries are opening, you have competition.’ But I don’t see it as competition.

I see it as neighbours. We all know each other, hang out together, and get along,” Moore explained.

The demand for craft beer has grown drastically in the last few years, Moore said, noting Five Roads will seat 49 guests, and will also offer a small food menu with things like flatbreads and paninis.

This growing season marks the 11th year in a row that Langley Community Farmers Market has been bringing this community farm-fresh food for sale in abundance.

Starting in mid-May, a number of local farm vendors will be set up in the parking lot of the Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s (KPU) Langley campus on Wednesday afternoons.

This popular market offers everything from cheese and produce to handmade breads and soaps.

The market is staged in the courtyard of the local KPU campus, at 20901 Langley Bypass, from noon to 4:30 p.m. each of the Wednesdays during the summer.

Featuring more than 50 vendors that “Make it, Bake it, or Grow it,” the market will continue to run until mid-October. But this isn’t the only farmers market in Langley.

In the Township, the Fort Langley Village Farmers’ Market at St. Andrew’s Church, at 9025 Glover Rd., will once again open every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. from early May through to the end of October. They’re offering locally grown fresh farm vegetables and fruit, cheeses, fruit preserves, fresh baked goods, B.C. arts and crafts, hot barbecue pork, and local organic fruit wines and spirits every week. And, they have also typically hosted a Christmas market.

The future of the Aldergrove Summer Farmers Market, as well as the shortlived market at Timms Community Centre in downtown Langley City, is in question. Neither are expected to happen this season, although efforts are afoot to resurrect both in different incarnations for the future.

Many Langley festivals revolve around food Tastebuds drive much of what we do and consume, so it’s no surprise that the number of food-related festivals in Langley has grown significantly in recent years.

Chili & Barbecue May 4 and 5 – Kwantlen Polytechnic University For two days Langley will host the 34th annual taste-testing Canadian Festival of Chili and BBQ. In this event, contestants compete to win in various barbecue categories. Guests enjoy samples from chefs, and proceeds from this food-driven event go to the BC Fire Fighter’s Burn Fund.

Fort Langley Beer & Food Festival May 18 – Fort Langley National Historic Site From noon to 6 p.m. hundreds of craft beer enthusiasts are expected to sample beers from more than 25 different breweries and taste creations from some 15 local food vendors. Food Truck Festival June 15 – Douglas Park, Langley City The Greater Vancouver Food Truck Festival returns to Langley City again, this time as part of the 25th annual Community Day festivities in the downtown core. The Food Truck Festival – typically featuring 20+ hand-picked food trucks serving everything from donairs and kettle corn to poutine and macaroni and cheese – will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the park, and for more information, people can visit www.fvfoodtruckfestival.com.

Fork & Finger Aug. 24 – Downtown Langley City Foodies unite at this seventh annual food-based festival that revolves around McBurney Plaza – in the centre of the one-way in downtown Langley City. This event, put on by the Downtown Langley Business Association, features live cooking demonstrations and entertainment throughout the day. But the focus of the event is sampling food from more than a dozen area restaurants. Collect a passport, visit participating eateries that are serving up $5 samplers, then return a completed passport to the plaza for a chance to win $1,000 in Downtown Dollars. Thousands attend.

Ribfest Aug. 16 to 18 – McLeod Athletic Park fields An estimated 30,000 people feasted on barbecued ribs and helped raise more than $60,000 for worthy community projects and causes during the inaugural Ribfest last summer in Langley. Organizers are now expecting a much larger turn out for year two, which will once again feature five different rib vendors, live entertainment, and craft beer. On stage: inside or out Whether you’re a fan of Shakespeare brought to life on an outdoor stage, prefer dinner theatre, or appreciate the more traditional community theatre on the small stage at the Langley Playhouse – this community caters to the theatre aficionado among us.

Theatre in the Country is the newest thespian group to bring their antics to the stage in Langley.

Formerly based in Maple Ridge, this group migrated south to Langley in the past few years and now operate out of a permanent home in the Langley Vineyard Church (Glover Road and Logan Avenue).

This year, the community theatre group is bringing to life Death Trap, Little Women, and Black Comedy, and they serve that up with some succulent roast beef, mash potatoes, and horse radish sauce (a buffet dinner fit for a king).

“Our motto is great food, great shows, greatly entertained,” said artistic director Reg Parks, noting they put on five show as a year, including a Christmas production.

Thespians with history A quaint 80-seat auditorium is typically packed when the Langley Players put on their various shows throughout the season.

Having recently wrapped up a production of Half Life, the team is currently showing a play by Irish playwright Brian Friel called Dancing at Lughnasa.

Preparing to embark on their 50th anniversary later this year, the Langley Players Drama Club has dozens of active members who have won countless acting and back stage community theatre awards.

They have their own facilities, operating out of a 1939 building – formerly dubbed the Brookswood Hall. It was renamed the Langley Playhouse when they took over the building in 1972, and they’ve since raised the curtain on more than a hundred productions through the years.

Taking it outdoors This summer, Bard in the Valley returns with a series of outdoor performances of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, taking place at three different venues throughout late June and July.

For the fourth time, Darcy Knopp will be directing a Bard in the Valley production, this time giving a fairies and enchanted forests to life on the travelling stage.

Lights, camera, action: Film crews love shooting in Langley

Langley’s film industry is booming – especially in the Township – and it’s common to come across film crews working in rural areas, and throughout the scenic village of Fort Langley, where dozens of movies, TV shows, commercials, and even music videos are filmed each year.

Fort Langley has an impressive list of credits such as Bates Motel, Once Upon a Time, Twilight, Night at the Museum, Riverdale, and Arrow – and those are just a few.

“In 2016 alone, the creative sector which includes digital media was $2.5 billion to the provincial economy. When we drill it down to the Township, we have about 1,700 Township residents who work in the film industry so we want to continue to keep that growing,” said Val Gafka, Township of Langley senior manager of economic investment and development.

Since 2013, filming in the Township has really

started to grow, as measured by the number of film days tracked by the Township.

“If we have two productions working in the Township in two separate locations on the same day, we count that as two film days,” Gafka elaborated. “So, for 2018, we had over 1,700 film days, 135 productions, and we issued 720 permits.

Since 2014, we have been in excess of 1,000 film days per year. Which is good for our economy.”

According to Gafka, the industry gets a provincial tax incentive for working east of 200th Street.

“They always look to get as close to 200th as they can,” Gafka noted.

She added that during the last year or two, film studio space in the Lower Mainland has been wholly occupied, and said the Martini Studios in Northwest Langley is just as busy.

“They opened up last year, and Netflix signed them immediately for five years.”

From TV series, to feature films, Langley sees it all. “There’s quite a diversity of film,” added Gafka. “We have a lot of different looks – urban areas, agricultural areas, small downtown cores – a lot to offer the industry as far as inventory is concerned.”

And Langley City has also had visits from its fair share of film crews.

Multiple movies with “recognizable talent” have filmed in the downtown core, according to Langley City Councillor Teri James, who is also executive director of the Downtown Langley Business Association. “I would say it’s been very positive on the economy. I’m going to say 98 per cent of companies that come here are nice to work with,” she added.

Happy Herd Farm Sanctuary A four-acre farm in Aldergrove is home to all types of livestock that for all types of reasons need a forever home.

Critter Care Critter Care Wildlife Society’s shelter at 481 216th St. is home to hundreds of B.C.’s injured or orphaned wildlife, including raccoons, opossums, fawns, coyote cubs, bears, skunks and more.

Critter Care became a registered charity in January 1993 and in a matter of a couple of months, founder/executive director Gail Martin came across an area near in South Langley that looked promising, with a 70-year-old farmhouse sitting on it.

The farmhouse was transformed into a triage hospital and after the building of countless animal enclosures and thousands upon thousands of dollars later, Critter Care took shape.

LAPS

Langley Animal Protection Society A registered non-profit society, LAPS formed in 2003, when the animal control contract between the Township of Langley and the SPCA expired.

A group of volunteers lobbied the government for a municipally run, no-kill animal shelter and after six months, a control contract was awarded to them and LAPS was born. A partnership was also formed with the City of Langley.

Now, for the past 16 years, LAPS animal control officers have been responding to dog and large animal complaints in Langley. The team (both staff and a huge army of volunteers) provide professional and humane animal control, as well as innovative animal welfare programs.

In 2009, LAPS moved from its dilapidated shelter into a brand new, state-of-the-art facility named in the honour of LAPS founding member, Patti Dale.

The shelter at 26220 56th Ave. provides private kennels for dogs, as well as a cat cottage and a more recently completed state-of-the-art isolation centre where they care for sick cats and help prevent the spread of disease. On the average day, there are about 50 cats and kittens, as well as 15 dogs in care at the Aldergrove shelter.

LAPS also provides annual free vet clinics for Langley’s low-income and homeless people living with pets, on top of their other public awareness and outreach initiatives.

The shelter is open seven days a week. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day and adoption and viewing hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Visit www.lapsbc.ca.

Little Oink Bank Pig Sanctuary Newer on the Langley animal front is Little Oink, and the efforts by one couple (and a few volunteers) to save potbelly pigs.

As of March 2019, they had 32 pigs, plus several calves, sheep, and pups enjoying a safe and forever home on a five-acre Aldergrove farm in the 1700-block of 252nd Street.

SARS BC The Aldergrove-based Small Animal Rescue Society (SARS) BC is a registered charitable society made up entirely of volunteers throughout the province that rescues and rehomes small, less traditional pets.

The society is a virtual rescue, so the majority of the animals – including rabbits, hamsters, Guinea pigs, Chinchillas, and even rats – are kept in foster care until they can find a forever home.

SARS’ goal is to rehabilitate each of its rescued animals, many of which have been abused, neglected, or simply set free to fend for themselves. Once they are ready, they are made available for adoption to suitable indoor homes. If they are not suitable for adoption, the animals live out the rest of their lives in the care of a SARS BC member.

Since its inception in 2004, SARS has found homes for more than 3,000 animals.

The Langley-based group takes in local owner surrenders and helps to find the dogs new homes. As of April 2019, Small Dog Rescue had placed more than 400 dogs in new forever home. Any up for adoption will have already been altered, and have vet checks, shots, and microchips.

Tiny Kittens Langley is well known around the globe as a caring community filled with people who go out of their way to ensure the health and safety of pets, especially when it comes to finding loving forever homes for abandoned or neglected animals.

While LAPS, CARES, SARS, and Critter Care Wildlife Society are among well-recognized and respected animal organizations doing great work in this community, its another non-profit society that has helped put Langley on the map for international animal lovers.

Since its inception in 2013, Tiny Kittens has cared for and found homes for at least 500 cats and kittens – most with special needs.

While that’s all great and necessary work, it’s not all they do. Tiny Kittens Rescue also offers food and medical support to hundreds of feral cats in colonies (in Abbotsford, Langley, and parts of Surrey) each year, they also run a trap, neuter, and release program that helps about 400 local cats annually. And that doesn’t touch on Tiny Kitten’s efforts to educate the world about cat overpopulation.

Cruise-In: Revving up the engines in Aldergrove For the third year running, one of North America’s largest charity car shows is revving up to happen in Aldergrove.

The Langley Good Times Cruise-In Society has announced that the 2019 car show will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7, with their swap meet and car corral on tap for Sunday, Sept. 8.

Live entertainment will once again be an integral part of the show, dispersed throughout the venue. And Patterson let slip that there may be a few Elvis sightings – since the King is reportedly a huge car buff.

Once again its being held in the heart of downtown Aldergrove. But, the floor plan for this year’s show is being tweaked a bit, explained Cruise-In president Wayne Patterson.

“The Langley Good Times Cruise-In has been working hard to put together the 2019 show,” Patterson explained. “And we have changed the show location to only include Fraser Highway – we will be shutting down Fraser Highway from 264th to 272nd Streets, and some small side streets.”

He also noted that the popular marketplace will be moved to the Royal Canadian Legion’s parking lot, and that the In ‘N’ Out Burger will be relocating next door at the Re/Max offices.

“The new location in Aldergrove has us excited to be able to have all the cars on the Fraser Highway, which is going to look amazing,” Patterson said.

“We know for years people didn’t like the fact that they were parked on the smaller streets

Then, in 2017, the charity event re-located to Aldergrove. Through it’s long history, it has become one of the largest mixed car shows in Canada and one of the Top 10 in North America.

In fact, this is Langley’s single largest event of the year, and the volunteer-driven show has gained an international reputation, drawing cars and spectators from across Canada, the United States, and even England. – at peak a few years back, it drew more than 100,000 people to the one-day show ‘n’ shine.

Folks settle back into the comfort of their seats, switch on the radio, start munching on popcorn, and watch as the film credits roll on a new movie they’ve been anxious to see.

They’re parked at Twilight Drive-In in Aldergrove, the South Coast’s last remaining drive-in and one of just three still standing in B.C. – beside the Starlight in Enderby and the Park in Prince George.

That number is down significantly from the 24 that once operated across the province, in such locales as Golden, Trail, Quesnel, and Westbank.

And it’s nothing like the U.S., which remains the drive-in capital of the world.

Twilight Owner Jay Daulat, who has been in the drive-in movie business since 1969, doesn’t plan on going anywhere. He loves it too much to walk away.

He forged on after his former business, the Hillcrest Drive-In in Cloverdale, closed in 2003 and was razed to make way for residential development.

Daulat, who start in theatres as a projectionist, ran the Hillcrest for nine years before finding a new home for the business on the north side of Fraser Highway just west of downtown Aldergrove. He opened the gates on Twilight on Sept. 1, 2005.

The drive-in has a capacity of 436 vehicles and

opened for the 2019 season back in early March.

Through March and April it’s been open Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, as well as Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The Twilight will be showing movies seven nights a week starting at the end of April and through the spring and summer.

The Twilight closes for the winter at the end of November.

Movies start at dusk, however the first movie

will start at 7:30 p.m. (later in the summertime).

Walk-ins without cars are also welcome. Once that darkness blankets the landscape, Aldergrove’s Twilight Drive-In transforms into a place that, for many moviegoers, oozes nostalgia.

Looking ahead, Daulat still has faith in the outdoor movie experience, noting that business is “excellent” with both young and old anxious to attend and soak in the experience.

Arts sizzle in downtown Langley City this summer

True art aficionados will appreciate all downtown Langley has to offer – especially during the summer months. Few small community cores bustle with the level of art-appreciation apparent in Langley City.

There will be live performers and backyard games featured in June, celebrity impersonators, craft beer, and food on tap in July, and magic served up with free cotton candy in August.

There are numerous opportunities to enjoy live entertainment, arts events, outdoor theatre, festivals, dance nights, self-guided mural appreciation walks, movie nights, and culinary happenings – all within the 10-square-kilometres that make up Langley City.

It doesn’t end there, she said – turning a spotlight on the 26th annual Arts Alive Festival on Aug. 17 that bring more than 250 visual and performing artists together in the City centre.

Creativity is abound, and the City goes out of its way to focus on it, said Teri James, a City councillor and executive director of the Downtown Langley Business Association.

“Entertainment through our events held in the downtown is important as it creates a sense of community for people who live here, and a reason to welcome visitors to experience it,” she said, pointing to the McBurney Plaza Summer Series, the Arts Alive Festival, and various functions at the Spirit Stage in Douglas Park as prime examples.

Offering more specifics on this year’s McBurney Plaza lineup, James said that between June to August there will be a mix of Saturday – day and evening – events in the plaza focused on music, food, and fun.

“From a tourism prospective, some people plan their holidays around our Arts Alive event, which in turn encourages them to stay a night or two and experience some shopping and dining while they’re here,” she said.

Free outdoor concert series returns to Willoughby It was spawned from Canada 150, and has grown into a re-occurring outdoor summer concert series at one of Langley’s fastest growing and busiest parks.

Back in 2017, with some financial help from the federal government, the Township of Langley built a $260,000 amphitheatre at Willoughby Community Park to help commemorate the nation’s 150th birthday.

The unique outdoor stage, with tiered grass seating, is located in the 7700-block of 202A Street – right next to the Langley Events Centre and proved a perfect venue to host various events such as concerts.

So, for the third summer running, the Township is gearing up to present its Summer Festival Series on that very stage.

The free performances feature talented entertainers – primarily musicians – from around the region and beyond one evening each week during the months of July and August, explained Peter Tulumello, the director of arts and culture for the Township.

He’s currently working out the lineup of performers for this year’s event, and said the venue offers a great stage for a diverse mix of entertainers. “We… are promising some award-winning talent,” he said.

In past they’ve had everything from singers and musicians, to improv comedians and magicians share their talents.

Audience members are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair, and all ages are welcome to the family-friendly presentations.

Langley is defining itself as a sports destination Langley has become a sporting mecca in Metro Vancouver and British Columbia, attracting some of the biggest youth and adult sporting events around, and boosting the local economy.

From high-level play to kids kicking around a soccer ball on the weekend, Langley has been building up a host of facilities – along with a network of volunteers, coaches, and businesses that support them – for the past few decades.

The sporting activity around town ranges from major regional teams like the Vancouver Giants in hockey and the Langley Rams in football down to amateur athletics and youth leagues.

But the overall scope of sporting events are growing and growing, because Langley has increasingly been attracting some of the largest tournaments in the province, and sometimes from across the country.

All this sporting activity benefits the whole community, according to a study by Canadian Sports Tourism Alliance on the impact of the BC Basketball Provincial Championship held in March of 2018 – when the Township hosted 152 teams at the LEC. Langley welcomed more than 2,600 out-of-town visitors, who stayed an average of 3.5 days in the Township, and most (82 per cent) said they were likely to come back.

While here, those visitors spent $1.9 million. About $750,000 of that money went to local wages, and 17 Langley jobs were supported directly by the tournament. The event created about $3 million in economic activity in B.C. in total, and a $1.5-million boost to B.C.’s GDP, the study found.

It’s unknown what the total impact of sports tourism is on Langley, but the Township, local tourism agencies, private operators, and local firms have been working to bring more events to Langley for more than a decade.

“We must have something to offer,” said Val Gafka, senior manager of economic investment and development for the Township of Langley. “Are we punching above our weight? I don’t know.”

Langley has been building up its ability to host major tournaments for years.

One of the first major examples of this, and still one of the largest events held in town, was the 2010 BC Summer Games – which saw thousands of youths and coaches from across the province compete in everything from bicycle racing to kayaking to track and field.

The BC Senior Games were also in Langley in 2014, using many of the same volunteers and facilities that had served the Summer Games.

Langley Mustangs Pacific Invitational has been running for almost 40 years and has evolved into an event that draws more than 1,000 athletes for a weekend of track and field competition, now held at McLeod Athletic Park.

In April this year, Langley hosted the inaugural two-day B.C. WAG Junior Olympic Compulsory Championships at the Langley Events Centre (LEC), crowning some young gymnasts as tops in the province.

In 2019, Langley will also be hosting the 2019 World Indoor Lacrosse Championships at LEC, and down the road, the 2021 and 2022 Canadian National Track and Field Championships are coming to town.

Hosting world-level championships in team sports is new for Langley, but it won’t be the first world event to come here. As the unofficial horse capital of British Columbia, Langley has been drawing world-level equestrian show jumping events for years, most of them taking place at Thunderbird Show Park. (Story, page 46) You name the sport, there’s probably a group playing it in Langley, and a venue available where spectators can enjoy it.

Langley is increasingly defining itself as a sports destination.

Murals focus of new self-guided tour Walls around downtown Langley City are not seen as stark concrete divides, but as huge blank canvases screaming to be transformed.

Numerous surfaces around the City core have already been morphed into giant pieces of art, as the Downtown Langley Business Association and member companies strive to expand the number of murals available for viewing – and make it one more of the reasons that people come to explore Langley.

Millennials are all about having experiences: discovering places, participating in adventures, and exploring the world around them.

So Langley City has created a self-guided tour of the City murals – inviting people to explore some of the art on display while taking a stroll through the quaint downtown core.

There are 18 murals currently listed on the tour, and the DLBA is currently working with a number of local students and participating businesses to grow that number this year.

It’s a walkable tour… that can be done any day of the year, explained Teri James, executive director of the Downtown Langley Business Association.

The murals, which James called the “most beautiful wall art you’ve ever seen,” help make any stroll more pleasurable, hence the idea to

promoting the experience.

“These murals are literally gifts,”James said, looking at one of the most recent additions – an Alzheimer’s tribute on the side of the old Royal Bank building. “There’s no community out there that wouldn’t appreciate this.”

While she lauded Langley City artist Judy Pohl, one of the artists who has created many of the images around the City, James explained that there are a few other talented artists who have contributed, as well.

“And we are especially thrilled to be tapping in to the student talent in the Lower Mainland, and excited to add to the murals in our community,” she added.

City offers self-guided mural tour

While Langley might not yet compare with a community like Chemanius – that boasts 40-plus murals – it does have many murals and more in the works and could soon be a contender.

Outside of the City centre, there are several murals in downtown Aldergrove – including several on the front of the new community centre. There’s a historically themed one on the side of the BC Farm Museum in Fort Langley, plus a collection of 32 smaller ones set up on panels inside. And there’s even a mural on the side of the former South Carvolth Elementary

School and another environmentally themed piece outside the Langley Fine Arts School, plus an orca unveiled earlier this year at the Kwantlen First Nation cultural centre.

Shopping options endless in Langley Langley said goodbye to Sears on Jan. 8, 2018, one of the last of the retailer’s stores to close as it went out of business entirely across Canada.

And early this year, owners of the Willowbrook Shopping Centre indicated that some news was afoot at the former Sears site, long one of the anchor tenants of the sprawling mall .

QuadReal Property Group, the mall’s owner, unveiled plans for a new facade for the structure – updated from the decades-old design of the former Sears.

Plans were to be announced sometime in the early spring, though the owners wouldn’t comment on the possible identity of a new tenant or tenants for the site.

Whatever goes into the former Sears, it will be joining one of the largest centres of commercial space in Metro Vancouver.

More than 130 stores and restaurants fill Willowbrook.

Surrounding the popular regional shopping centre proper are several other malls, some of which have been expanded in recent years.

Everything from a Bed Bath and Beyond to an Everything Wine, from an Indigo to RV and hottub retailers are within the zone of the major commercial core that stretches out from the intersection of 200th Street and the Langley Bypass.

Some major changes are expected on the one-way soon.

North of Willowbrook is Willoughby, featuring the Willoughby Town Centre – a growing neighbourhood shopping plaza with local restaurants and services such as a dentist and optometrist.

Continuing north of Willoughby, across the Trans-Canada Highway, a series of shopping centres line 88th Avenue – between 200th and 212th Streets.

To the east is Langley’s oldest community, the former fur trading centre of Fort Langley.

Culture and art are on full display here, as the historic village has the highest concentration of art galleries and antique stories in Langley, with a wide variety of locations selling paintings, jewelry, furniture, and artisan foods.

The Cranberry Festival is one of the biggest commercial events of the year, with vendors of all types, and of course, massive amounts of fresh, locally grown cranberries for sale each fall.

Aldergrove, in the southeast corner of Langley, has its own commercial core around 272nd Street, and another around 264th Street.

Finally, Brookswood is in southwest

That means there are multiple smaller neighbourhood and village centres, and each of them has its own commercial core.

Plus, plans were recently unveiled for a possible 28-storey tower and accompanying multi-use development to replace Aldergrove’s old downtown mall.

One of Langley’s oldest shopping districts is the City’s downtown, centered on Fraser Highway’s one-way section between 204th and 206th Streets, and on nearby Douglas Crescent, Salt Lane, 56th Avenue, and Glover Road.

Murrayville, close to the geographic centre of Langley on Fraser Highway, has some commercial plazas and a number of doctor’s offices and medical services, as it is close to the Langley Memorial Hospital.

Langley still holds a strong reputation as one of the primary shopping meccas within the Lower Mainland, and based on the increasing mix of ma-and-pa shops and big national chains that cover its landscape, this designation is well deserved and only expected to grow.

While the Willowbrook neighbourhood remains Langley’s largest shopping destination, Langley is known as a “community of communities.”

Langley: A hub for all types of sports When it comes to sports, Langley has some of the best facilities and athletes in the country.

From its nationally recognized baseball teams to the Western Hockey League’s Vancouver Giants, Langley has long been home to excellence in sports.

And since sports has always played an important role in Langley – consequently the community has invested significantly into ensuring there are a wide range of facilities available for its local athletes.

In fact, Langley offers a treasure trove of various sports facilities, everything from the new 500-seat NHL-size ice rink in Aldergrove, and the triple gymnasium and 5,200-seat arena bowl at Langley Events Centre, to the constantly expanding world-class equestrian show jumping facilities at Thunderbird Show Park.

While not every sports facility in Langley is necessarily equipped to welcome the world, many are.

Thunderbird Show Park at 248th Street and 72nd Avenue is one of the top equestrian centres in North America, annually hosting more than 100 events, including the Nations Cup of show jumping in May-June and the World Cup Qualifiers in August.

Walnut Grove Community Centre is home to a competitive-length pool and diving towers, George Preston Recreation Centre has recently added a ball hockey box, and Al Anderson pool has added competitive-grade starting blocks.

For young two-wheel enthusiasts, Langley’s national-level BMX track – next to George Preston Recreation Centre – has been upgraded to host a full slate of racing events and activities.

Langley has managed to strike that balance between developing amenities for elite athletes of the future, while providing a safe and comfortable community sporting environment for everyone to live their best active life.

Rowing and paddling enthusiasts have a 200-metre rowing course for dragonboat, kayak, outrigger, and voyageur boating at the Langley Rowing and Paddling Centre in Fort Langley.

Developing this inclusive sports environment that meets everyone’s needs requires – above all else – quality infrastructure. It means ensuring that the fields of play, whether it is a sheet of ice, a BMX bike dirt track, or a balance of natural and artificial turf pitches, exist and are up to continuously improving standards.

Trinity Western University Spartans Athletics provides top-level spots action at it own campus facilities, as well as at the 250,000 square foot Langley Events Centre, which houses a 5,000-seat arena, gymnasium, a certified gymnastics training venue, as well as a 500-seat banquet hall.

Langley has been able to find that balance between investing in new facilities, and maintaining existing amenities – whether it’s for the local users (the t-ball player looking for a neighbourhood ball diamond, a junior swimmer doing laps in one of the older outdoor pools, an international-recognized curler needing ice time to hone his rock throwing skills) or for the regional, provincial, national, and international athletes coming to Langley for a major championship.

Whether it is pickleball, bocci, beach volleyball, lacrosse, rugby, football, tennis, soccer, boxing, water polo, fishing, gymnastics, slo-pitch, bowling, or any of a number of other sports – there is likely a well-equipped venue in Langley to house it.

Building on the ability to host such events has provided much of the impetus for such topgrade facilities as Langley Events Centre and McLeod Athletic Park.

And consequently, Langley is becoming known on the national and international stage for its quality facilities that were used when hosting such major events as the BC Summer Games, BC 55+ Games, Special Olympics, the BC High School Basketball Championships.

This fall, Langley will be hosting thousands when it holds the FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championships from Sept. 19 to 28 at LEC, and another major event on the books in the 2021 and 2022 is the Canadian National Track and Field Championships.

WHL playoff battle unfolding before a crowd of 5,000 at the Langley Events Centre (LEC), or a tikes training camp held at the Sportsplex, that locals are drawn to hockey.

Langley shows time and again it loves for hockey, and just knowing this community is home to six ice arenas should speak to that commitment to the sport.

There’s the George Preston Recreation Centre, Langley Sportsplex, Langley Twin Rinks, the National Hockey Training Centre, LEC, and the newest ice rink added last year in Aldergrove. All of these facilities host various hockey action throughout the year.

Langley Minor Hockey Association, for instance, is hundreds of members strong. This organization, which has been around since 1973, striving to keep the game of hockey, fun, fair, and rewarding for players ages four to 19.

There’s also the Valley Ball Hockey Association, which is some 1,500 members strong – and growing quickly since relocated to Langley a few summers ago.

Of course there are countless adult leagues, women’s teams, drop-in play, there’s even some 80-year-old-plus Langley players (who make up the Old Crocs) that play on a regional team.

Langley: A community of hockey lovers Then, there’s some champion players coming out of Langley’s faith-based post-secondary, Trinity Western University, that have earned national acclaim. The men’s ice hockey team, known as the Spartans, won the BC Intercollegiate Hockey League championships a second year running this spring, defeating the Vancouver Island Mariners.

And, speaking of competitive play, Langley is home to two junior B ice hockey teams – the long established Aldergrove Kodiaks and the newer Langley Trappers. It’s also home to the junior A Langley Rivermen team – formerly the Chilliwack Chiefs.

But the hockey players who draw the biggest numbers of spectators and garners the most media attention hail from the Vancouver Giants.

Trails & greenspaces offer wealth of options for outdoor enthusiasts Langley’s largest park got a little bit bigger at the beginning of 2019.

3.95 hectares (almost 10 acres) was added in the northwest area of the park.

Campbell Valley Regional Park is a sprawling expanse of field and forest nestled in southwestern Langley.

That brings the park up to a total of 547 hectares (1,352 acres), and will allow for more trail connectivity and for natural areas to link up.

Like several other parks in the community, it is owned and managed by Metro Vancouver, as part of a chain of regional parks.

Campbell Valley Regional Park is one of the most popular and picturesque parks in Metro Vancouver.

Campbell Valley is known for a number of features and events that have no parallel in other parks around the Lower Mainland.

Its extensive network of horse trails, for instance, serves the equestrian community – many of whom call Langley home.

Stretching from 20th to 4th Avenues, between 200th and 216th Streets, this Metro Vancouver-operated park hosts a variety of family events throughout the year including the annual Country Celebration every September, with games and events that hearken back to the community’s pioneer roots.

It also has its own (decommissioned) race track, the former Langley Speedway. Most days, the asphalt oval is a quiet spot for picnics, but it also hosts car shows several times a year.

In January, Metro Vancouver Parks announced a new addition to the park. A lot of almost

The mammoth trail system inside the park features 29 km of hiking trails and 14 km of horse riding trails.

Stretching from 20th to 4th Avenues, between 200th and 216th Streets, this Metro Vancouver-operated park hosts a variety of family events throughout the year including the Country Celebration in September.

There are multiple access point for this park. The North Valley entrance is located off 16th Avenue across from the McLean Scout Camp (about halfway between 200th and 208th Streets). The South Valley entrance is located off of 8th Avenue at 204th Street.

And the Campbell Downs Equestrian Centre is located on 208th Street south of 16th Avenue.

In addition to Campbell Valley Regional Park, Langley is home to three other Metro Vancouver parks and a large variety of trails for walking, running, riding, dog walking, or biking that are sure to please any outdoor enthusiast.

Trails & greenspaces offer wealth of options for outdoor enthusiasts ALDERGROVE • Aldergrove Regional Park South Aldergrove is home to Aldergrove Regional Park. Operated by Metro Vancouver Parks, this community gathering place is filled with more than enough trails for everyone to enjoy. Featuring Pepin Brook Loop and Rock ’N Horse trails, the park offers more than 10 km of hiking and cycling trails, as well as riding trails for those who prefer to “hoof it.” To get to the park, head south on 264th Street to 8th Avenue.

Turn left onto 8th Avenue and go to the four-way stop at 272nd Street.

IT offers easy and scenic trails and multiple picnic areas.

• Fraser Greenway The Fraser Greenway linear park runs along Fraser Highway from 264th to 268th Streets, is perfect for family outings with young children. The trail isn’t overly long and there is a playground to stop at and enjoy.

BROOKSWOOD • Noel Booth Park One of the longest trails in the Brookswood area, the Noel Booth trail weaves around Noel Booth Park’s six baseball diamonds and continues through the serene back woods. There is plenty of parking in the lot at 36th Avenue near 203rd Street and along 36th Avenue.

• Dale Ball Passive Park Popular among dog walkers and frisbee enthusiasts, the trails along Dale Ball Passive Park are primarily used for the disc golf course. In the fall and winter, the former gravel pit fills with water and is home to many bird species. In the summer, the pond dries, revealing an expansive disc golf area. Access is on 36th Avenue and 207th Street.

Trails & greenspaces offer wealth of options for outdoor enthusiasts FERNRIDGE • Fernridge Trail Starting at 32 Avenue, the lengthy Fernridge Trail weaves south along 210th Street, down 24th Avenue to 204A Street and back over to 20th Avenue.

FORT LANGLEY • Fort-to-Fort Trail and Derby Reach Regional Park At 12 to 15 kilometres, (depending on the route chosen) the Fort-to-Fort trail winds along the Bedford Channel portion of the Fraser River. Beginning in Fort Langley’s Bedford Landing and ending in Derby Reach Regional Park, the trail offers stunning views of the river and mountains as it stretches past luscious vegetation and wildflowers that grow along the path. Plenty of geocache sites can be found in Derby Reach Park, along with an off-leash dog park at the Fraser River, camping and many fishing sites. The trail now connects to the west end of the park at 208th Street and, as part of the Trans-Canada Trail, has been extended as far as the Golden Ears Bridge.

• Houston Trail The Houston Trail is a forested, gravel loop trail that connects to the Fort-to-Fort. Parking is available at the entrance to the heritage apple orchard on McKinnon Crescent. This trail is unique in Langley as it is one of the only completely forested routes and is not perfectly flat. It can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to complete, depending on your pace.

In the winter of 2017, a new viewing platform opened that provides access to the environmentally sensitive Langley Bog for the first time.

– Trans-Canada Trail The Trans-Canada Trail is one of the world’s longest networks of multi-use recreational trails. Once fully completed, it will stretch 24,000 km from the Pacific coast to the Atlantic, connecting every province and territory.

The trail is made up of nearly 500 individual trails, including one in the Township of Langley. To access the Langley portion, head up 208th Street to Allard Crescent. The trail then follows the waterfront and Langley’s country backroads into Abbotsford.

LANGLEY CITY • Brydon Lagoon Brydon Park itself is a magnificent nature reserve with trails galore, a water fowl habitat and its very own lagoon. But what makes Brydon Park even more appealing is that it is connected to almost every other park in the City. A gravel parking lot is located just off 53rd Avenue near 198A Street.

• Buckley Park Beginning at 50th Avenue near 196th Street, follow trails southward towards Buckley Park and its many playing fields. Continuing on the same path, this time going east, will lead to another of Langley’s many off-leash dog parks.

Or, heading north from 50th Avenue will lead to Brydon Park before finally settling in at the popular Portage Park.

• Portage Park and Nicomekl Floodplains Portage, off 204th Street and 51A Avenue in the City offers the main entrance to the Nicomekl Floodplain trail system which follows the Nicomekl River running through the middle of the City. It is a multi-use pathway used for cycling, jogging, walking and provides opportunities to make a loop with other nature trails in the area.

• Sendall Gardens The romantic Sendall Gardens has a trail that take visitors on a tour around a legacy garden and tropical greenhouse. Make sure to go during spring blooming season as the park will be a riot of colour. Not only is Sendall Gardens a great place to take a walk, it’s a popular setting for engagement and wedding photos. Park access points are on 49, 49A and 50th Avenues between 201A and 202A Streets.

A park sanctuary inside the City, Sendall Gardens offers some walking trails plus the community’s only public tropical greenhouse.

SOUTH LANGLEY • South Langley Regional Trail The South Langley Regional Trail is one of the hidden treasures in Langley. Stretching from 216th to 264th Streets between 4th and 8th Avenues, this 11-km trail is open to walkers, riders and bikers alike. One of the most beautiful portions of the trail is Irene Pearce Loop Trail in the Municipal Natural Park between 224th and 232nd Streets. This wooded trail is home to many wild animals and birds.

• Walnut Grove Trail One of the larger trails in the Walnut Grove area can be accessed from both Walnut Grove Community Park (89th Avenue and Walnut Grove Drive) and 91A Avenue. The trail itself covers most of the park, and from there, it connects with almost all the other trails in the community.

• North West Langley Trail An offshoot of the Walnut Grove Trail, the North West Langley Trail runs through Walnut Grove, connecting Dorothy Peacock Park to the Langley Lane Greenway.

• West Munday Creek Trail The West Munday Creek Trail, located behind the Walnut Grove Trail, begins at West Langley Park (208th Street and 93rd Avenue) and leads south through a conservation area to 85th Avenue.

• Langley Lane Greenway For dog lovers, just south of 96th Avenue is the Langley Lane Greenway.

Stretching between 208th and 216th Streets the trail features an off-leash dog park and connects to both the North West Langley Trail and the Derby Hills Trail.

WILLOUGHBY • Willoughby Trail As the Willoughby community continues to grow, so does the Willoughby Trail. Beginning on 208th Street, north of 80th Avenue, the trail loosely follows 208th Street south to 65th Avenue. Note that some parts are not yet connected.

• McLarty Trail Wrapping around Lynn Fripps Park (81A Avenue near 210th Street), the McLarty Trail heads south along 211A Street through the McLarty Greenway to Richard Bulpitt Elementary Park at 211th Street and 77A Avenue.

• Gordon Trail Beginning at Willoughby Community Park (7782 200 St.), the Gordon Trail — one of the longer ones in Willoughby — diverts south along 202A Street to 64th Avenue.

The Fort-to-Fort Trail was a well kept secret for years.

Brydon Lagoon Trail and park will be getting a makeover in the near future.

Langley boasts world-class recreational amenities A search for recreational opportunities in Langley will uncover a wide range of pleasant places for active fun, ranging from a sedate walk around the Brydon Lagoon – home to many species of birds and one of several popular walking trails – to splashing down a water slide or leaping around a parkour obstacle course.

Penzer Action Park, at 4847 200th St., is one of Langley’s newest recreational amenities, boasting the biggest outdoor parkour park in the country. It offers a collection of fun obstacles designed to test people’s inner ninja and perfect their balance and acrobatics.

It’s 10,000 square-foot of heavy duty wooden forms that accommodate a sport where competitors navigate obstacles by running, climbing, swinging, vaulting, jumping, and other movements. It turns out Penzer could be hosting a huge parkour championship later this year – stay tuned to the Langley Advance Times for more details.

In the meantime, this park also feature a concrete pump track, multi-sport courts, a bike skills track, kids climbing playground, not to mention some picnic areas for resting and watching.

When it comes to recreation in Langley, there are many, many other places to see and things to do, and odds are residents and tourists alike can find the exact kind of activity they enjoy nearby.

One of the newest amenities is Aldergrove’s outdoor swimming pool and community centre.

Opened last June, the Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre at 27032 Fraser Hwy. features a canopy-covered outdoor area with a six-lane 25-metre competitive swimming pool that is open year-round, with a leisure pool, a circus-themed water play structure, a hot tub that fits up to 50 people, and a picnic area.

And on the subject of walking, how about the indoor walking track at Timms Community Centre for those rainy days?

Located in the heart of Langley City, this three-year-old facility also offers a wellequipped weight room and other fitness facilities including a gymnasium, games room, and cycling centre.

Then, just two blocks away from Timms lies Douglas Park, which recently installed pull-up bars and pair of parallel bars as part of an outdoor fitness track.

Willoughby Community park, next to the Langley Events Centre, offers mountain bikers their own trail through the woods.

Speaking of bikes, Langley’s BMX track continues to turn out some of the best young riders in the country, and attracts competitors from both sides of the border to race at the Brookswood track.

Elsewhere, curlers will find a home at the George Preston Recreation Centre, while more competitive swimmers might gravitate to the Walnut Grove Community Centre that boasts the largest indoor pool facility in Langley for playing, training, or competing.

while there’s a chance to get some air between you and the ground at the Extreme Air trampoline park in Walnut Grove, or testing your form throwing five-pin at Alder Alley Bowl in Aldergrove.

There’s also an opportunity to practise hitting those home runs at the Bat Cave, near Costco, or maybe you want to saddle up and go horseback riding at Glen Valley Stables or Langley 204 Horseback Riding.

And for the marksman, a visit to the Langley Rod & Gun Club in Brookswood or The Range indoor shooting facility in Walnut Grove might be more to your liking.

Making a splash in Langley: check out our pools Whether for exercise, relaxation, or simply to cool off on a hot day, if you’re seeking a local swimming pool Langley boasts a number – both indoor and out – worth checking out while you’re in town.

In fact, there’s a new kid on the block, when it comes to aquatic facilities, and it’s definitely worth a look-see.

Aldergrove Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre at 27032 Fraser Hwy. is all new, and boasts a 25-metre poo, 1 and 3-metre diving boards, hot tub, leisure pool, sauna, steam room, three waterslides, and a huge, interactive lazy river, multi-storey, circus-themed aqua play structure, spray features for preschoolers, and a tidal pool with six types of waves that can be found in their special Otter Co-op Outdoor Experience Water Park.

Murrayville W.C. Blair Recreation Centre at 22200 Fraser Hwy. has a whole new look and feel following extensive upgrades to the 1986-era Murrayville facility.

Last year, after months of renovations, the Township of Langley unveiled an updated and much brighter aquatic facility with many new features including a new water, climbing wall, a small indoor “water table” for children to play on as well as an expanded family changing

room and a reconfigured parking lot.

W.C. Blair is open Mondays to Fridays, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and Sunday with all-day public swims.

Walnut Grove Walnut Grove’s aquatic centre, at 8889 Walnut Grove Dr., offers a 50-metre pool that often hosts swimming competitions, a large leisure pool, 300-foot waterslide, one- and three-metre diving boards and a five-metre dive tower.

The pool is open every day from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., with an early-bird public swim Mondays to Saturdays from 6 to 8 a.m. and 6 to 9:30 a.m. on Sundays. There are afternoon and evening public swims, as well. Walnut Grove Community Centre: 604-882-0408 Fort Langley Outdoors, a popular place to cool off on a hot summer’s day is the Fort Langley community pool, located at St. Andrews Avenue and Nash Street. In addition to the pool, the location has picnic facilities and sports options.

Opening for the season is typically mid-June.

The pool is open from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and weekends (and holidays) from 1:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Langley City Al Anderson Memorial Pool, situated in City Park at 4949 207 St., includes a water park, picnic tables, and barbecue facility.

It is, among other things, home to the annual Legendary Water Fight where swimmers take on firefighters in a friendly competition.

Al Anderson re-opens for the season on June 10, offering a mix of children’s swimming lessons, lane swimming, aquatic fitness, public swim times, and even rentals.

Depending on your desired use of this popular outdoor pool, check in with the pool staff about hours of operation.

Time for a soak In addition to the pools, Langley also boasts a number of spary parks that offer alternate methods of cooling down, including one at Douglas Park, Nicholas Park, and City Park in Langley City. Owner Alf Krause has been operating the farm with his wife, Sandee, since 1974.

“We tried to create a farm where people can be in the country, and see and experience how things grow,” said Krause.

He has been a farmer in the Langley area for most of his life, as he grew up in Aldergrove on a poultry farm.

He noted some changes have happened over time, but the farm remains as busy as usual.

Vineyards are also in abundance in Langley, and wine lovers can find a variety of tasting rooms and on-site shops. See more, page 11.

“We used to be in the country, and now we’re in the urban country. For what we’re doing, it’s been very good. We’re not dependant on Vancouver, and we love all our local people coming to enjoy the farm,” he added.

And to preserve farming, the Langley Sustainable Agriculture Foundation is a non-profit that encourages, educates, and provides support for agricultural matters in Langley.

“There’s a lot of farm country here, still. I think we have a large agricultural base.”

More than 70 per cent of the farm’s produce is sold directly off the farm property, according to Krause.

“There’s always something special to knowing where your food comes from. If you can experience [getting] close to where food comes from, you gain an appreciation of saving farmland where possible,” he added.

Horse lovers very familiar with Langley facilities and trails Two top-rated equestrian centres in Langley help to establish this community’s reputation as the “Horse Capital of B.C.” Milner Downs, located on 38 acres at 64th Avenue, east of 216th Street, is one of B.C.’s premier equestrian show parks, offering gold-rated hunter jumper competitions in the summer, along with year-round training and boarding.

Then there’s Thunderbird Show Park, a focal point of the Langley equestrian community for about 46 years.

Founded by the late George and Dianne Tidball at the corner of 200th Street and the freeway (where Cineplex Theatre is now), tbird now calls a 86-acre venue – further east at 72nd Avenue and 248th Street – home.

Currently under the leadership of the Tidball’s daughter, Jane, TBird is widely considered one of North America’s top venues by riders from across the continent and hosts world-class show jumping events.

For example, Thunderbird was officially awarded the prestigious Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup for the next three years.

The show park will also be hosting the Longines World Cup Qualifier again this year, on Aug. 25, during the Summer Fort Festival.

And the Summer Fort Festival caps off a

series of major spectator-friendly events and a numerous other smaller, local events through a busy season that runs annually from April through September.

All their events are family-friendly, usually with plenty more to see and do beyond watching the competition, with shops and food venues and activities for children. And Thunderbird welcomes family picknicking – whether they wish to buy food from a restaurant or food truck, or bring their own basket meal from home.

Admission to Thunderbird is free, but there’s a per-car fee for parking (carpooling is encouraged) that goes to charity through the George and Dianne Tidball Legacy Foundation.

OUTSIDE THE SHOW RING It’s not just these prestigious equestrian facilities that have earned Langley the horse capital distinction.

With about 5,000 horses calling the Township of Langley home, it seems fitting that the Horse Council of B.C. has its headquarters here – in Aldergrove to be specific, at 27336 Fraser Hwy. Of the HCBC’s 23,788 members (2018 statistics), more than 1,800 live in Langley, Fort Langley, and Aldergrove.

And a large percentage of those horse owners reside in South Langley and Aldergrove, and

can be seen taking advantage of the local trail systems to ride, including large sections of Campbell Valley and Aldergrove Regional Park.

To put it in perspective, Langley’s share of about 100,000 horses that are found throughout B.C. accounts for a significant portion of the equestrian industry’s impact of about three quarters of a billion dollars on the province’s economy.

In addition to the show parks, and the individual horse owners in Langley, there are a few farms raising race horses and other breeding stock. There are also numerous boarding facilities, and smaller riding arenas.

Plus, Langley is home to two non-profit organizations that provide therapeutic horseback riding for individuals with physical, cognitive, and emotional disabilities.

There’s the Valley Therapeutic Riding Association in Aldergrove, and the Pacific Riding for Developing Abilities in South Langley.
