Looking for the ‘wow’ factor Pulles joined Mission Communities in Bloom over a decade ago

TANDING in his backyard, surveying the immediate vicinity, Bert Pulles smiles and says, “The work starts this weekend.”

The 85-year-old Mission resident is preparing to get his own personal oasis back in shape now that spring has arrived.

In the summer, his yard is filled with flowers, a waterfall and pond – it’s a setting perfect for hosting a wedding, which Pulles has done in the past.

However, right now, there are tree limbs to clear away, flower beds to rake over and plenty of other work to do.

And while he still does a lot of the work During the summer months, Bert Pulles’ backyard is filled with colour and life. However, himself, Pulles said he does hire a helper to it takes plenty of hard work to get it into shape after the winter months.

Gardening and landscaping is something he says he loves to do.

Pulles was born in Holland and moved to Canada in 1951, when he was 17 years old. He moved to Mission more than 30 years ago and is best known as “Bert the Mole Man” because of his mole-trapmaking business. But Pulles has also been a dedicated member of Mission Communities in Bloom for more than a decade.

He is also a director of BC Communities in Bloom.

“I enjoy every bit of it because I think this is one of the best cities in the Lower Mainland,” he said.

Pulles created the original Japanese Friendship Garden located at the Mission and District Chamber of Commerce. Over the years, the design has been altered but it still contains many of his original elements.

Pulles credits former Mission mayor James Atebe for convincing him to join Mission Communities in Bloom in 2006.

“He spoke about it and realty motivated me,” Pulles said.

Once he started, he couldn’t stop. He says he likes to stay busy.

istered for it. We’ve done it in the past and are going to have two judges coming at the end of June,” explained Pulles.

This year’s contest is a little different than the streetscape event.

This year people need to register, because backyards will also be viewed.

“A lot of people have said, ‘You should see my backyard,’ but we

cannot walk in there unless they sign up for the contest,” Pulles explained, adding that organizers are looking for gardens with the “wow” factor.

He is hoping to set up a display garden – maybe at Save-OnFoods or Fraser Valley Building Supply – to promote the contest and accept registrations.

Later in the summer, judges will travel to Mission and tour the district, including some of the local winning gardens.

Of course, Mission Communities in bloom is about more than contests.

The organization has a successful school program as well. Pulles said they are hoping to have between 17-19 schools participating this year.

“This year we are going to let the schools do whatever they shine at. In the past we have given them guidelines, but it’s wide open this year; do whatever they do best – flowers, vegetables or even recycling. A recycling program is part of Communities in Bloom.”

April 17 Travel to Africa Come learn about the way many people live in Zambia and how you can make a difference. Jacqueline enjoyed travelling with her husband to Zambia last spring as part of the Rotary Dental team. When they were not working, their hosts, Seeds of Hope, toured them around not only parks and marketplaces, but the compounds and hospitals. Jacqueline enjoyed the beautiful children there and learned how she could make a difference.

April 18 Mission Genealogy Group This group meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month with guest speakers on various related topics, such as how to incorporate the context of where our ancestors lived, their daily work and habit.

April 22 French Conversation (Beginner) This course is for the absolute beginner, with an introduction to a new language provided in a relevant manner. You will build your vocabulary and learn the different sounds to be able to speak an “International French”. No tests or exams, just learning in a fun and casual way.

Can you plant seeds leftover from last year?

When properly stored, most seeds stay viable for at least one to two years. Over time, however, their germination rate — the number of seeds likely to sprout over a given period — lessens.

How long seeds last depends on their type. Corn and pepper seeds aren’t likely to last for more than a year while bean, pea, tomato and carrot seeds can stay viable for up to four years.

To test the germination rate of leftover seeds, place 10 of them evenly apart on a damp paper towel. Roll up the paper towel with the seeds, place it in a plastic bag and store the bag in a warm place. After a few days, check the paper towel. The

number of germinated seeds will give you an idea of how well they’ll fare in your garden. If only two or three seeds sprouted, it’s best to buy new seeds.

Volunteering opportunities for seniors Studies have shown that volunteering has a positive effect on seniors’ wellbeing and can even help stave off neurological problems associated with old age, including depression and dementia. If you’re a retiree looking to volunteer your time and skills, here are some ways you can give back to your community: 1. Offer pro bono services. One way to volunteer during your retirement is to use your professional skills to help people in need for free.

For instance, if you used to be an accountant, you can volunteer to help low-income families or recent immigrants prepare their tax returns. If you used to be a lawyer, you can offer free legal assistance to groups in need.

The latest controversy about Aspirin.

Aspirin has long been one of the most common drugs prescribed in the world. It was derived from the bark of willow trees and has been used since the late 1500 BC for easing non-specific pains in ancient Egypt.

In the 1970s, it was found to also have beneficial effects in the prevention of death from heart disease. Since then it has been given to patients with previous episodes of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Some studies have also found it to have beneficial effects in reducing the risk of cancer, especially colon cancer.

This sounds like great news. Then what is the controversy about aspirin?

what about primary prevention?

In the recent years there have been a few studies, mainly three studies named ASCEND trial in patients with diabetes, ASPREE trial with individuals 70 years or older, and ARRIVE trial in patients with moderate CVD risk. All these studies have shown that for primary prevention, the benefit to harm ratio is less clear.

So the best thing we can do is to have a clear discussion with your healthcare worker about the pros and cons of taking aspirin daily for primary prevention, which is to prevent a heart attack or stroke in an otherwise healthy individual. so, what’s the concLusion?

Individuals with a history of heart disease and stroke should take it daily as the absolute benefits are far greater than the risks of major bleeding. (Secondary prevention) In patients with low cardiovascular disease risk, it is beneficial to have a clear discussion with your physician about the pros and cons of taking aspirin daily. (Primary prevention) In the end, we should also never forget the proven interventions such as maintaining a healthy diet, exercising, smoking cessation and managing co-morbid conditions like diabetes, hypertension well.

In tertiary prevention, it is about managing a disease after diagnosis, to slow or stop disease progression via measures such as chemotherapy, rehabilitation etc. so what type of prevention is aspirin beneficiaL for?

It has been proven that taking a baby aspirin daily for people between the ages of 40 to 70 years, is beneficial for secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

So people who have a high cardiovascular risk, history of heart attacks and low bleeding risk should be taking a baby aspirin (75 mg or 81 mg) daily.
