Musical extravaganza From March 22 to 30, Gallery 7 Theatre’s one hundredth production, the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical sensation Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat, runs at the Abbotsford Arts Centre. “There’s very little dialogue; it’s very much in keeping with Andrew Lloyd Webber,” said Ken Hildebrandt, Gallery 7 Theatre’s
Executive/Artistic Director. “I’ve seen at least one rehearsal and the cast has blown me away with their passion, talent, energy and love for the show.” This much-loved musical follows the biblical story of Joseph and his coat of many colours. After being sold in to slavery by his brothers, Joseph gains favour with his master only to wind
up in jail where he discovers an ability to interpret dreams, which catches the Pharaoh’s attention. Joseph rises to power in Egypt and is faced with a difficult decision when, during a famine, his family needs his help. Will he choose forgiveness or revenge? International director and producer Tony James is directing
a cast of nearly 30 performers, many of whom will be performing multiple roles. The cast is an ensemble piece and will include singing, dancing and all the usual numbers from the ageless favourite. Choreography is by Samara Judd, the musical director is Dave Rosborough and the stage manager is Nelly Fargeon. Set

Pineapple & Shrimp Fried Rice Cook the rice and allow to cool, preferably in the fridge, before making this dish. It’s best to spread it out on a cookie sheet to cool so the rice doesn’t clump together. While curry is not typically used in Thai cooking, its Indian flavour combines perfectly with all the other ingredients. White pepper is used more frequently than black pepper in Asian cuisine, both for aesthetic reasons and because it seems to have a spicier, yet less biting, heat. You could chop up all the shrimp and add them all to the dish, but leaving some whole creates a beautiful presentation. This dish comes together really quickly once you start cooking, so make sure you have all your ingredients prepped and ready to go. INGREDIENTS: • 8 large Shrimp (leave 4 whole, and cut the rest into small pieces) • 1 egg • 250 grams of cooked rice, about 1.5 cups • ¼ cup small diced onions • tbsp soy sauce Lydia • 1 tsp fish sauce MacPherson • 1 tsp sugar Photo • 1/8 tsp salt • 1 tsp curry powder • 1/4 tsp White pepper • 1/2 cup fresh Pineapple, cut into small pieces • 1/3 cup toasted cashews, unsalted

INSTRucTIoNS In a wok or a large frying pan, heat 2 Tbsp of vegetable oil until hot. Sear the whole shrimp until done; remove and set aside. In the same pan, add the small pieces of shrimp and cook until done; remove and set aside. Add more oil to the wok if needed, then add the egg and scramble slightly. When the egg is half way cooked, add the rice and toss to mix. Add the diced onions and toss to mix. Add curry powder, white pepper, sugar, salt, soy sauce and fish sauce; toss until the rice grains are separated and the seasoning is well mixed. Add the pineapple, cashews, and small pieces of shrimp; toss until the pineapple starts to darken slightly and the rice is dry. Turn off the heat and toss in tomatoes and green onions. Garnish with whole cooked shrimp and more chopped green onions. Serve with crunchy cucumber slices.

The Farmer and the Foodie Last month I mentioned our trip to Asia, which ended in Thailand visiting friends. These former Abbotsford residents have built an orphanage just outside of Bangkok for HIV positive children and have spent the last 20 years operating the joy-filled Abundant Life Home. Loving Thai women commit their lives to care for the children, each “house mom” raising her 6-8 children in a home-like setting. Taay supplements her income by painting and selling mortar and pestle sets, and I was thrilled to come home with my own Lepp Farm Market set. If only they weren’t so heavy, I would have filled my suitcase! While traveling abroad is so fun, it’s also the best reminder that we have won the lottery simply by being born in Canada and there’s no denying that people living in developing nations face many daily challenges.

Renovations to create a healthy home
Home Life
Home renovation projects are done for several different reasons, whether to update styles, repair damaged or broken items or to achieve more living space. More than ever before, homeowners are choosing improvement projects geared toward making their homes healthier.
retardants on furniture fabrics produced prior to 2006, can send toxins into the air. Some manufacturers may still use these flame retardants in new forms, but with similar risks. Before purchasing furniture, ask if a product is treated, and select naturally fire-resistant materials like wool and cotton.
Sunlight Institute advises that there’s no harm in letting natural sunlight do its work, as bacteria within eight feet of low-intensity UV light can be killed in 10 minutes.
Establishing a healthy home means different things to different people. For example, to an environmentalist, a healthy home may incorporate eco-friendly or green products. To those with young children or mobility-impaired seniors, a healthy home may be one free from potential hazards. Others may view a healthy home as one that alleviates allergies.
• Lighten up.
Always opt for nontoxic, natural products when cleaning in and around the house.
The World Health Organizations says inadequate housing conditions, such as poor ventilation, radon, urban pollution, and moisture issues, can contribute to many
preventable diseases and injuries — especially respiratory problems, nervous system disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer.

Lighting is often underappreciated but can have a dramatic impact on whether a home feels inviting, warm and/ or uplifting. Experiment with different types of bulbs and lighting fixtures to turn drab and dreary environments into brighter places. Lighting may improve mood and productivity. • Let the sun shine in. Modify window treatments to let more sunlight into the house. There is evidence that the sun, particularly UV light, is a potent bactericide. The
• Turn to nontoxic cleaning products, pesticides and insecticides.
• Declutter the home. A cluttered, hectic space can affect emotions and mental state, never mind attracting dust and making a home harder to clean. Spending time in spaces that do not elicit stressful feelings is healthier and can help residents to rest and recharge. Making a home healthier can be on the list of this year’s renovation plans.

Of all things that can cause an allergy, those resulting from pollen tend to be the most prolific. Pollen can be released from trees, grasses, weeds, and flowers throughout much of the year. While the main goal of pollen is to fertilize other plants, pollen that is inhaled can cause allergic reactions. It’s one of the more difficult allergens to avoid since pollen is virtually everywhere.

An allergy is defined as an overreaction of the human immune system to a foreign protein (allergen) that is eaten, inhaled, touched, or injected into the body. Allergies can cause such reactions as stuffy or runny noses, itchy eyes, coughing/ sneezing, rashes, and hives. More severe reactions can include difficulty breathing, a lowering of blood pressure and asthma attacks.

Unlike a cold, which is caused by a virus, allergic rhinitis is an allergic response to any number of triggers. Usually hay fever can be brought on by any number of allergens and sometimes it can be difficult to narrow down the exact cause. However, here are some of the more common allergens.

Allergy triggers are all around, and the rates of those people affected by various allergies seems to be growing. Worldwide, the rise in prevalence of allergic diseases has continued in the industrialized world for more than 50 years, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. Sensitization to foreign proteins in one’s environment is present in up to 40 percent of the world’s population, continues AAAAI.
