here’s nothing quite like spring! There’s a palatable freshness in the air, beautiful flowers blooming and buds sprouting, and the promise of possibility. It’s a time to take stock, make changes, and plant seeds for the future.

And that’s exactly what we’re doing at Tweed, as we bask in the beauty of the season. We’re hitting the refresh button and giving Oak Bay’s favourite magazine a makeover!

We’ve added new departments that will inspire you — from the dazzling décor items on our new design page to ideas for making the most of each season in ‘5 Fun Things’.

Let your flag fly freely!

Christopher Causton was Mayor of Oak Bay for 15 years.

He’s now a captain and goodwill ambassador for Victoria Harbour Ferries. Educated at a university in Scotland, he likes to fly flags in his spare time.

knew her as the ‘Flag lady’. Living in the I800-block of Beach Drive, Muffet McGowan was an original. Every day she would put out a different flag, and locals strolling or speeding by would look up at the flag and smile. When she passed away, the house was sold, the pole came down and her flag collection passed to her son, Stu. After a brilliant military career, Stu became a Harbour Ferry captain and the lead ‘ballerina’ on our weekend ballet performances. Our paths never crossed at Harbour Ferries but flags brought us together.

My flagpole at the corner of Beach Drive and Transit did not start its life there.

Its original home was at a house in the 1100-block of Transit near Windsor. New owners of the Transit Road home had no use for the pole so they gave it away.

Actually, the mother gave it away but the daughter wanted to keep it (but that’s a story for another time!). The pole was installed at Beach Drive and slowly the numbers of flags increased to the point where they required their own cupboard. And still, the flags kept coming.

Residents soon realized that if they had a flag that they wished flown on a certain day, all they had to do was leave it at my house with instructions! The following three examples will make the point. I was asked to fly a Norfolk Island flag so a visitor from Norfolk Island, walking past, would get the shock of their life. A Norwegian flag was requested last summer for a

visiting Viking. A Bulgarian flag was asked to be flown by a lady on two separate dates each year. She and her husband lived just up the road and I flew her flag on her birthday and their anniversary. Her husband had simply to look out his window to get the hint!

Over the years, I‘ve been the lucky recipient of many flags: Thorold, Ontario (known as Canada’s most patriotic city), Belize, South Carolina and New Bern, to name a few. Several weeks ago, I was lucky enough to be given a White Ensign, and a Canadian flag that predates Newfoundland joining Confederation. The moths have had a go at them but they still fly freely!

Half the fun for people strolling by is to guess the reason the flag is up. One morning, I’d put up the Union Jack and during the day there was a knock on the door and an elderly gentleman wanted to know if there was an emergency in the house. I‘d mistakenly hung the flag upside down. There’s a subtle difference in the width of the white bands which the British, when needing help, hang the wrong way to signal distress — without their enemies knowing! Perhaps Brexit was on my mind, I explained.

And that brings us to how I met Stu McGowan. He knew that I had carried on his mother’s love of flag flying so he invited me to his home and let me help myself to her collection.

inding a suitable home for a family of six — including four children ages one through 14 — isn’t the easiest task, especially in Victoria’s tight housing market. Luckily, for Rebecca and Mike Miller, they had more than a little insider know-how when the opportunity to build their own custom home came up.

Rebecca, who works in marketing and sales with Newport Realty, and Mike, who is the founder and CEO of Abstract Developments, have well over two decades of combined experience in developing commercial and residential properties. After purchasing a dream home on Beach Drive that needed extensive renovations, it became clear the growing family was going to need somewhere to land semi-permanently.

thing a bit more permanent until the Beach Drive home can be completed,” explains Mike, sitting in the couple’s bright, open-concept kitchen.

The family purchased the rocky 20,000-square-foot lot and started construction on the home they eventually named Oakhaven in the summer of 2016.

“Considering it was the first home we’ve built together, it went really well,” says Rebecca, reflecting back on their work planning the 6,500-square-foot house to make it as useful and We designed it for livable for the large family as ourselves but you possible. can’t help but think “We had quite a few considerations for our own family that of future families who we wanted to make sure were might live here. included,” says Mike. “But we also wanted to keep subsequent owners in mind by building it to be future-proof.”

Victoria’s penchant for attracting retirees and the desire for more and more people to age-in-place makes it imperative to include such considerations, Mike explains.

“Ultimately, we designed it for ourselves but you can’t help think of future families who might live here,” Rebecca adds.

To do so, key design elements like creating a master bedroom on the main floor (as well as another on the second level), and adding an elevator, were non-negotiables. The floor plans — which were conceived with help from Rus Collins at Zebra Design — incorporated both seamlessly.

Other main considerations for the family were privacy, light, an arts and crafts look, and of course, location. The couple has lived in Oak Bay pretty much their whole lives.

“It’s also a perfect location school-wise for our young kids because it’s on the school bus route, and we’re in such close proximity to parks and both Estevan and Cook Street Village,” explains Rebecca. Being close to downtown is important, too, because we’re both there every day for work.”

Upon entering the front door, guests are greeted with a bright, contemporary entryway. Through a door to the left is the ground-level master and en suite, with sliding doors out on to the yard and Oak trees. To the right, you’re led through to the main living area with sweeping views of the back patio and garden.

In order to build on the rocky lot, some blasting had to be done, but the result is an amazing view of the rocky outcrop from the main living and kitchen area. Sliding glass doors throughout the two rooms allow the entire space to be opened up to the back yard during the warmer months and a large gas fire pit and seating area are great for entertaining.

“I really wanted to capture that feeling of the outdoors inside, and even during the winter months when we don’t open the doors, there is still that feeling that you’re one with the oak trees and rocks,” says Rebecca, motioning out towards the yard. Mike adds that the south-facing orientation means that again, even in winter, the light is plentiful.

but at the same time it has that traditional cozy, quaint country home feel,” Rebecca says of the home she helped develop and also decorate, with the help of Nygaard Interior Design.

Down on the ground-level floor, there’s a home theatre room and a separate bedroom and bathroom for their 14-year-old daughter.

“It’s nice for her to have her own space down there, especially if she has friends over it’s somewhere they can hang out,” says Mike.

Up on the second floor of the home is the master suite, complete with his and hers walk-in closets, east-facing windows and a large soaker tub in the spacious bathroom.

“The sunrises from that room are beautiful, and I love sitting in the tub and looking out because you can see the tops of the oak trees against the sky. It’s one of my favourite parts of the home,” she says, smiling.

Also on the second level are three other bedrooms for their children, including one which was designed as a flex space to accommodate a bedroom or a conversion to a library. Sliding doors open up and look out over the main living area and shelves could be added to complete the look, explains Mike.

All that attention to detail has certainly paid off — Oakhaven was recently named 2018’s ‘best single family detached home’ in the $2 million to $3 million range at the Victoria Residential Builders Association annual awards.

As for two real estate and development professionals working together to build their own home, Rebecca says their experience in the field helped them to keep their cool and not sweat the small stuff.

“You can really get caught up in the small details and that can paralyze a project,” she explains.

“We were careful to manage our expectations and stay realistic. We had to make some careful choices as a busy family of six when it came to materials and design, but as a result we’ve been really pleased with the livability of the house.”

Where were you born and who is your family?

I was born in Sidney and spent a small amount of time between my late teens and early 20s in Kelowna. I’ve been living in Victoria ever since I moved back.

How long have you lived and worked in Oak Bay? I’ve lived in Oak Bay for 16 years and worked in Oak Bay for 18.

What do you love about Oak Bay? I love the closeness to the ocean and great beaches. It’s convenient and walkable. It’s a safe place to live — except for some crazy pet-and-people-chasing deer! I also really appreciate how nice my neighbours are.

What do you love about designing homes?

I love designing houses because it gives me a lot of pleasure to hear from my past clients and have them tell me how much they love and enjoy living in the homes I‘ve designed for them. Being able to see these houses built, and standing on a street to look at them, is a really special feeling. It doesn’t get much better!

Tell us about your hobbies?

I love to cook and I enjoy preparing food with care and creativity. That goes well with my enjoyment of travelling, too! I also like painting abstract art.

What brings you joy?

Seeing my sons living their lives independently and confidently brings me joy. I’m very proud of both of them.

Who is your hero and why?

I would have to say that other than Spiderman, I have two mentors. The first is Jordan Mills, who introduced me to drafting and design. He taught me and gave me my start in the business. The second is Bruce Wilkin, who I partnered with and worked together on many projects with. He’s been — and still is —an inspiration to me with his talent.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

In life, I was once advised to be careful what you accept being offered to you. Always give what you can give freely, and don’t accept gifts that have strings attached. In design, an architect once cautioned me never to put mag wheels on a classic car.

Spring blooms Nature’s First Green is Gold

pring is here, filled with the promise of new beginnings, and like the Robert Frost poem Nothing Gold Can Stay, we’re reminded that although the delicate new growth is beautiful, it’s also fleeting. So celebrate the season of new life with crisp whites, warm blacks and bountiful pops of fresh green! Oak Bay’s Erin McCall takes us to her favourite local haunt, Thorn and Thistle Flowers on St. Patrick Street, and shows us spring’s new look.

A mom of three little boys, Erin is also a grade four teacher at Glenlyon Norfolk School.

She also helps out from time to time at their family business, McCall Gardens, in the catering department. Originally from New York, Erin met her husband, Trevor McCall, at university in New York.

The couple lived there until moving to Oak Bay about 10 years ago.

“I absolutely love raising a family here,” Erin says. “We take advantage or our ‘backyard’ by going on family bike rides, walks to the Oak Bay Marina to explore tide pools, fish and crab. We also love to walk down the street to Thorn and Thistle to get penny candy for the boys (they love 22

picking out their special ones) and coffee for ourselves and picking up their beautiful flower arrangements for us or for our friends.”

With a bachelor’s degree in childhood education and a master’s degree in literacy education, it’s no surprise that Erin loves her job.

“Everyone I work with truly cares about each and every student and making a difference in their lives,” she says. “I work in such a positive environment, which makes coming to work everyday enjoyable. For me, to see a child learn something new for the first time and knowing I had something to do with their learning, inspires

W

hile ocean kayaking with friends on our separate summer adventures, my wife and I have both been blown off the water on the wild west coast of Nootka Island and landed at Yuquot, which is also known as Friendly Cove. Just off Vancouver Island, Yuquot is the Indigenous name for ‘the place where the wind blows from all directions’.

Last summer during a long stretch of glorious, sunny weather, we joined two of our grown sons for a leisurely sea cruise up the Muchalat Inlet out of Gold River on the MV Uchuck III. The Uchuck is a reborn mine sweeper that hauls freight and dozens of sightseeing passengers past steep, glacier-carved second growth forests along the inlet to Yuquot. We saw lots of wildlife including gray whales breaching on the two-and-a-half-hour boat ride that we shared with a large contingent of American Jaguar enthusiasts fresh from a big car show at Oak Bay’s Windsor Park.

We brought a picnic basket full of goodies, but you can also buy soup, sandwiches, and baked treats fresh from the ship’s galley. The Uchuck stops and makes deliveries, picks up passengers and sails past fish farms and fishing camps, logging camps and settlements. The Yuquot/Friendly Cove run leaves Gold River, two hours west of Campbell River, on Wednesday and Saturday morning from late June to late August. The service also offers year-around Nootka Sound day cruises and an overnight Kyuquot adventure cruise from March to October.

On earlier kayak adventures, it was thrilling to make wetdrop launches from the ship with our kayaks and almost as exciting to be hauled up onboard while sitting in our boats. But I was hit harder emotionally, really stunned, by the vision of Yuquot when the Uchuck tied up at the dock last summer. There is archaeological evidence that the site has been inhabited for more than 4,000 years and I felt it.

Members of the Mowachaht/ Muchalaht Nation waited on the dock to unload water, propane gas, camping equipment, and food. A couple of young guys with an all-terrain vehicle pulling a small trailer hauled our packs and supplies for our three-night stay up a trail past the old Spanish garden, which is now a ball field and campground. Hundreds of First Nations families and friends had recently celebrated the annual August Salmon Festival on the grounds, and a few families were still camping out.

We hiked behind the trailer above the shoreline of Nootka Island past a towering, carved welcome figure, an old graveyard, and along a wooded trail to our cabins overlooking the sun setting slowly over the sea.

Our boys nestled into another of the Nation’s six cabins behind our oceanfront accommodation and the caretaker for the Mowachaht/Muchalaht Nation set us up with propane gas, fresh water, and a warm welcome. We rented the wellequipped cabins from the First Nation thinking at least we’d be out of the rain, but we only needed sleeping bags, pillows and food. If I’d known that we wouldn’t have to hike-in our provisions, I would have packed more food and adult beverages.

With virtually new foamies in the bedroom, a new gas barbeque for the deck, all new utensils, cutlery and gas stove in the kitchen, and a classy outhouse a short walk up the trail, our cabin was pretty heavenly.

back in a kelp bed just beyond the shore. Late one afternoon, a gray whale rolled and rubbed itself on the steep, pebbly beach just a few feet below our little group huddled in the sand — for more than two hours! It was breathtaking, and it gives me goose bumps when I remember that magical experience.

We had another wonderful, unplanned experience one morning while visiting the last inhabited lighthouse on the coast, 100 feet above the rocky site where the Spanish built a fort at the end of the 18th century. The Spanish were around but didn’t land on the coast until after Captain

James Cook stopped for water and repairs at Friendly Cove in March of 1778. Cook’s ships Resolute and Discovery stayed a month while his men (including his navigator William Bligh of Mutiny on the Bounty infamy) established first contact with Indigenous people, the first settlement on Canada’s west coast, and brewed the first beer from Spruce needles.

They traded metal objects for sea otter pelts and sailed home by way of Alaska and Asia. The pelts brought a fortune and launched the sea otter trade that sent more than 300 ships to the area between 1785 and 1825. The trade managed to wipe-out the sea otters on the coast, a devastation that has only recently witnessed the beginnings of a sea otter recovery.

On a hill above the dock and below the lighthouse, a little, wooden church made famous by Emily Carr’s 1929 painting burned down and was replaced in the mid-1950s by the now-decommissioned Catholic church/cultural centre on-the site. Inside, the building features two exquisitely carved house poles at one end where the pulpit once stood and another pair of equally beautiful poles and monumental carvings as an archway into the church. In the foyer and upstairs in the choir loft-museum, stained glass windows from the Spanish government depict scenes from that country’s early years at Yuquot/Friendly Cove including one of Chief Maquinna sitting the Spanish and English captains down to sign an agreement ending their fight over the sea otter trade.

ish sailors, capturing two as slaves including John Jewitt who produced a memoir of his 18 months in captivity on Nootka Island. Most recently published as White Slaves of Maquinna, it’s a mustread resource before visiting Yuquot. Historic photos and insightful banners describing First Nations’ life over the centuries offer a crash course about a place in history that was made a National Historic Site in 1923.

The elders told us of life at Yuquot/Friendly Cove during their lifetimes and how the First Nation had moved to Gold River in the 1960s “when work in the logging industry dried up.”

Only one house remains on the old site, and it is occupied by Indigenous carver Sanford Williams. When we were picking blackberries near the house, we discovered an old pole on the

ground hidden in the bushes. We learned that it was erected in 1929 and blown down by high winds in 1994. The weathered, cedar pole returning to earth was another vivid reminder of the passage of time and the history of this sacred site.

aurice ‘Migs’ Turner first spotted his future wife, Diana, with a friend of his in a bedroom belonging to the owners of the Oak Bay Beach Hotel back in December of 1947.

“It was being used as a cloakroom,” he says. “I’d arrived in Victoria just before Christmas and I was invited to a party at Mr. and Mrs. Merston’s residence. I was told to wear full dress uniform.”

The dashing young navy signals officer, with gold braid striped pants, and the girl in the powder blue evening gown hit it off immediately.

When Diana told him she was helping to raise thoroughbred horses with a stallion Hindu Prince that was the grandson of the world famous Man o’ War race horse, Migs was skeptical.

Stopping off at Benacres stables in Metchosin en route to her family home in William Head, where Diana’s father Dr. Bertram Jenkins was head of the quarantine station and leper colony, Migs was introduced to the great horse. After cuddling up to Diana in her evening gown, the horse promptly charged at him. But Diana’s parents were more welcoming and they chatted with him in their sitting room, well into the evening.

“We never looked back,” recalls a smiling Migs.

Last September, the couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Migs’ seafaring career spanned 35 years in the wartime Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve, Royal Canadian Navy and Canadian Coast Guard. Assignments included a U.S. Navy exchange and NATO meetings in Europe. His career showed him the world, yet Oak Bay was always close to his heart.

Migs first lived on Vancouver Island from 1935 to 1940 when his father, Major Maurice W. Turner, OBE, was transferred to Victoria as district military paymaster.

They lived in Esquimalt, in a house overlooking the ocean, and he’d take the streetcar to St. Michael’s School in Oak Bay where he served as Head Boy in 1940 and captained the school cricket team. On Satur-

day mornings, he and older brother, Bill, worked on the Tug Valiant. “We’d go around to the ships in Esquimalt harbour and pick up their week’s garbage, put it onto a barge and then tow it off into the strait and shovel it into the ocean,” he says. “For pay, we were given a mug of hot chocolate and a piece of toast and jam. That experience first got me interested in joining the navy.”

But his happy childhood also includes starker memories of preparations for war.

“There were 9.2-inch guns on top of Signal Hill above our home and they would fire over our heads,” he recalls.

“Mum would get a call and we’d have to leave all the doors and windows open in the house. Mum would make a picnic and we’d go to Saxe Point to watch a tug come out with two targets 610 feet apart, which was the length of a German pocket battleship.”

When the war began in 1939, his father was transferred to Toronto. The family followed in 1940 and Migs enrolled in the University of Toronto Boys School. He later joined the naval reserve and was sent to HMCS Cornwallis in 1943 for training.

Migs remembers both the camaraderie and the anxiety of wartime.

“We came into port on Christmas Eve in Halifax,” he says. “Someone put on a record and after a few moments, a couple of our mess mates went over, grabbed the record, smashed it on the table, opened the porthole and tossed it into the ocean. It was Bing Crosby singing I’ll be Home for Christmas and of Course, we were all so homesick, it was the last thing we wanted to hear.”

On March 2, 1945, Migs was aboard the corvette HMCS Guelph, on convoy duty during the Battle of the Atlantic.

“My duties were as an officer of the watch,” he recalls, beginning a dramatic true story that has become navy legend. “We were about 300 miles off Iceland, there was a heavy storm, and we were rolling back and forth,” he says. “We got a call from the escort commander that there was a flashing light astern of us.”

An officer called to the aft lookout to investigate further, but there was no response. “We soon realized that he’d gone overboard,” Migs explains. “As he fell, he’d grabbed a light from one of the Carley floats. When it hit the water, its two ‘C’ cell batteries flipped over and the light turned on in the water.”

The ship turned around to attempt a rescue, coming within 15 feet of where the crew had last spotted the man. Staring down at the thrashing waves below, Migs did not hesitate.

“We were taught as officers to look after our sailors on all occasions,” he says. “I promptly took off my duffel

coat and jumped into the water, swam over and reached down to where I’d seen him go down for the last time and not come back up. I managed to grab his hood and pulled him back up. He’d passed out so I wrapped him between my legs.”

The crew threw 13 lifejackets but the wind blew them all away. With the ship rolling back and forth, a line fared no better. Migs struggled to hang on while his body crashed repeatedly into the hull, causing hip injuries that persist to this day.

“Finally, they decided they would lower a Carley float for us,” says Migs, who next remembers waking up in the captain’s bathtub with the captain pouring 48-proof black rum down his throat. “I was a teetotaler at the time, but I’ve been drinking black rum ever since,” he laughs.

be awarded the prestigious Albert Lifesaving Medal.

But with headquarters in Ottawa overloaded with paperwork at war’s end, his application got lost. When his former captain took up his case again in 1996, officials in Ottawa wrote back to say that Canada no longer recognized the British medal.

Migs served in the navy until 1974. He captained HMCS New Liskeard developing variable-depth sonar from 1954 to 1956 and HMCS Saskatchewan from 1964 to 1966, once touring Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson on a day sail. In 1974, Migs joined the new Canadian Coast Guard and at times continued to represent the navy at NATO meetings in Europe.

“I remember everyone wore dark glasses so you couldn’t see them falling asleep,” he recalls, laughing.

Migs and Diana retired to Oak Bay in 1978. Today, they’re happy residents of Carlton House and amongst the naval memorabilia in a quiet corner of their study stands the White Ensign flag from HMCS Guelph — tall, proud and only slightly frayed from its wartime voyages across the Atlantic.
