Coming up Saturday, March 23, it’s Big White’s second annual Barrels & Brews – our international whisky, spirits and craft beer festival. Join us for a night of sampling a wide variety of whisky and spirits from around the world and craft beers brewed here in BC and beyond. “Last year was a huge success,” notes Ashley Vander Laan, Director of Food and Beverage. “We had a fantastic response and sold out.” This year is expected to sell out as well, so make sure to get your tickets early. Ashley estimates there will be approximately 20 different tasting tables set up in the Village Centre Mall this year with a mix of beer, whisky and other spirits. “We’ll also have some small-bites food offerings from different restaurants for you to sample as well,” she says, but cautions that it is not like a full dinner, but rather sample sized portions to try from the different restaurants on the mountain. Wednesday and Saturday nights the crackling fire is located by the skating rink and on Friday nights, it’s at the base of the Tube Park in the Adventure Centre at the base of the gondola. Don’t be shy, ask a passerby to snap the photo for you and offer to return the favour. No family on the hill with you? No worries, load up some friends alongside you instead. A great way to remember your fun time spent here on the mountain. 9) Ride Up Every Chairlift If you find yourself always skiing off the Ridge Rocket or Bullet Express, take the challenge to ski
2 across the hill and ride every lift. Every chairlift has an easy green run down from the top. For those not up to skiing the double-black runs from the top of the Cliff chair, you can still reach the lift from the top of the Bullet Express and with enough traversing, it can be achieved by adventurous intermediate skiers. Once you’re back up the Cliff chair,
there are green runs back down to the Village. 10) The Big Bang End your week with a bang and see the show our experienced pyrotechnician magicians create. Every Saturday night at 8:15PM the sky erupts in colour as we set off a vast array of fireworks down in Happy Valley.

Triple Threat
If you’re hoping to be at Big White Ski Resort for the weekend of April 5th to 7th and haven’t yet secured your accommodations, you might want to do so quickly as there is not one, not two, but three great events all set to fly that weekend: the third annual Peak Pride, the third annual Ales & Après Mountain Beer Festival, and the 22nd annual Neil Edgeworth Memorial Banked Slalom. Both the Neil Edgeworth Memorial and Peak Pride kick off on Friday April 5th. Last year saw a record number of snowboarders participate in the annual banked slalom named for snowboarder Neil Edgeworth who was tragically killed in an avalanche. With over $20,000 worth of prizes on the line for this year’s event, another banner turnout is expected. There’s a check-in party Friday night, a banquet Saturday and awards ceremony Sunday, (not to mention the actual competition), so you can expect to see snowboarding
enthusiasts in droves, flocking back to Biggie for this annual celebration of snowboarding camaraderie. Much of the banked slalom course runs down through a natural ravine underneath the Ridge Rocket Express, so it’s fun to watch as you’re riding up the lift. Peak Pride, first held here at Big White in 2017, has grown leaps and bounds over the past three years, attracting a huge contingent of the LGBTQ population and those wishing to show support. Things kick off Friday night with a mingle at The Blarney Stone Irish Tavern and “Gaymes” night at Snowshoe Sam’s. Saturday features a parade through the Village, a culinary walk and in the evening, a party called wipeOUT at Snowshoe Sam’s. The event wraps up with a farewell brunch at Blarney

SESSIONS’ SLUSH CUP
Come and end the season with a splash at this fabulously fun to watch slushy tradition. This awesome event is fun for everyone – especially for the spectators who get to watch contestants come barreling down the hill in an effort to make it across the giant pit of water at the end. Of course there are always those who are trying to win the award for crowd favourite that will crash on purpose or use the water like an airbag to flip into it. You just never know! Contestants are encouraged to dress in costumes and over the past two years, we’ve seen some pretty imaginatively attired skiers and snowboarders come splashing down. There will be an outdoor patio, bar and BBQ for those wishing to watch from the Sessions’ side of the fence, and plenty of people lined up on the hill watching as well. There are plenty of prizes up for grabs and bragging rights for those who compete in this much loved annual event. Sign up in advance at Sessions’ and bring along your cheering squad. The fun gets underway at 2PM on Sunday, April 21 and runs until the final competitors are done. Truly a great way to end the season with a splash!

“Hoppy” Easter! Whether you prefer to celebrate the religious aspects of Easter or the chocolate hiding giant bunny side of the holiday, Big White is the place to be this Easter weekend. The fun begins on Saturday April 20 with a photo op with the Easter Bunny as he hops through the Village. You can get your photo with him sitting on the big wooden Big White chair located in front of Dizzy’s. He’ll be there between 1 and 2PM. After that, it’s on to egg decorating. Grab the whole family and ride the gondola down to the Happy Valley Day Lodge where you can create your very own Big White Easter egg keepsake from 2 to 3PM. Space is limited so don’t be tardy. If you can’t
get in, we’ll be doing it all again Sunday at the same time. Easter Sunday morning starts off with our ever-popular Easter Sunday service with Pastor Jack taking place at The Woods. Doors open at 8AM and the service will begin promptly at 9AM. There will be an Easter Sunday Breakfast Buffet at the Moose Lounge in Happy Valley from 9 to 11AM featuring favourites like aged cheddar scrambled eggs, smoked bacon, fresh baked pastries and more. There will also be a kids’ pancake bar complete with maple syrup, vanilla whipped cream and a selection of Easter inspired toppings. Keeping with Big White tradition, we’ll have a couple of Eas-
ter Egg hunts on Sunday. The first one begins at 9:15AM and the second one starts at 12:30PM. Chocolate eggs will be cleverly hidden throughout the Village. Children of all ages are welcome to meet outside the Kids’ Centre to participate. For those who missed the first photo op on Saturday, you have a second chance to grab a selfie with the Easter Bunny Sunday from 1 to 2PM before heading down to the egg decorating in Happy Valley from 2 to 3PM. C I N D(AYND HFREIELNDGS)E S O N SKI INSTRUCTOR Sometimes a ski instructor stays at a hill long enough they get to teach the children of their original students. And occasionally, they might get to teach the third generation. For Cindy Helgeson, however, this year she reached a whole new milestone and got to pass on the joys of skiing to the fourth generation of the same family. “I’ve been teaching 30 years at Big White,” says Cindy, who started instructing here in 1988 but missed one season to go teach and travel in Australia. Cindy has seen a lot of changes to the resort and remembers back to before there were any high speed quad chairlifts on the hill. “It was still the old Ridge chair,” she recalls, “there’s been a lot of growth.” Over the years, Cindy has built up regular clientele (and subsequently their offspring and offspring’s offspring) from as nearby as Kelowna to as far away as Australia. And as her students grow up, they are excited to return to Big White and have her instruct their children. What makes Cindy such a special teacher? Besides her playful personality, seemingly infinite patience level and 30 years of experience, the one thing that makes her stand out the most are the finger puppets she uses while teaching. “I have 80 finger puppets,” she says, popping the lid off a box to show me. “Some are themed, like the Christmas ones, Valentines and Easter.” Are there favourites? “All the children love the elephants,” she notes. “I tell them, when they make their skis into a pizza shape, that the back has to be wide enough for a real elephant to fit at the back of the skis, and at the front of their skis, they have to block the gate so the elephant can’t get through.” Children genuinely adore both Cindy and her puppets. “I put puppets in their mittens so they can ski down the hill with them,” she says. In addition to the puppets being fun, Cindy also uses them to help children understand which leg it is she wants them to turn on. She explains, “If I put a bunny rabbit in one hand and an elephant in the other, then we call one leg bunny rabbit and the other leg elephant.” Cindy feels very lucky to work for a resort that boasts such a well thought-out beginner area. “This is such a
Super Star great family resort. I love the beginner area as there are no fast skiers buzzing past us. The camps will run over the week of March 11 to 15 for ages five to seven, eight to 12 and 13 to 16 in alpine racing, freestyle snowboarding and freestyle skiing. All of the racing and freestyle programs have been designed using the Long-Term Athlete Development model which combines the best of today’s sport science with the most up-to-date practices in coaching and training from around the world. The five day-long camps include six hours of training per day. “Athletes will benefit by honing their competitive skills on snow, have fun with all the off-snow activities and enjoy a balanced approach of working and playing hard,” says Michael. Designed for young athletes looking to advance their skills to the next level in alpine racing, freestyle skiing or freestyle snowboarding, our FIS and National level coaches have all the tools needed to help prepare kids for interschool competitions or domestic club racings. The combination of our world-class terrain and tools such as video analysis will help maximize improvement in a fun environment. Whether you live in the Okanagan or are just visiting us this spring, you have the opportunity to do something rare – ski and play golf on the same day! With courses like Black Mountain Golf Club just over half an hour away from the Gem Lake parking lot, it’s super convenient to make it a Ski to Tee day. Every spring, there are always privately organized groups of friends who take on the challenge. Whether it’s to ski nine runs in the morning and play nine holes in the

afternoon, or go on to play the full 18, there aren’t many places in the world where you can enjoy these summer and winter sports on the same day. Great for bragging rights on social media, make sure to tag #SkiBigWhite and whichever of the amazing golf courses we have close by when you do.
