After Studying Criminology at the University of the Fraser Valley for 4 Years, Maureen decided to decline her position in Policing and pursue her passion for the arts and dance. In 2006 Xtreme Talent Dance Company opened its doors in Abbotsford, and has been home to hundreds of dancers looking for somewhere to channel their creative energy. In 2013 a Fine Arts Preschool component was offered for the 2-5 year olds, and in 2014 a Licensed School-Age Before and After School Care Program (with transportation!). In 2018 a brand new component for dancers, an Intensive Training Program, was introduced. Designed for students wanting to train at a pre-professional level and dance over 20/hrs a week, this program has gained a lot of interest and momentum. More recently hosting Birthdays was introduced! With 4 birthdays booked every weekend, it’s definitely proven to be a huge hit and a great addition to what Xtreme offers. With programs for every age, Xtreme Talent has been one of the most rewarding experiences for Maureen. “It’s been a lot of blood, sweat and tears but having my daughter grow up surrounded by the positive energy and the influence of other amazing kids has been a true blessing.” The primary focus of Xtreme Talent has always been to offer somewhere for kids and teens to go where they feel inclusive, accepted and celebrated. Many children come for a class, and remain connected to the studio for many years. This past fall Maureen had the honour of winning the Established Business of the year award while attending the Business Excellence Award ceremony. This incredible moment was followed up with another studio expansion into a third unit within the complex making the total studio space over 10,500 Sq ft. Maureen’s advice for any young woman trying to start their own unique business, is to simply keep pushing forward and believing in yourself and never ever give up on your dreams. “13 years ago I never would have thought my little dance studio could be such an integral part of so many young dancers lives. They are a daily reminder that the hard work is worth everything it took to get here.” Maureen is thankful for her incredible faculty for remaining loyal to Xtreme and to the Abbotsford Community for supporting her for the past 13 years!

Recent advancements in women’s rights around the globe According to the United Nations, “no country in the world has successfully eliminated discrimination against women or achieved full equality.” However, advancements are made each year that lend hope for a future in which women everywhere have the same rights as men. Here are a few ways women’s rights have progressed around the globe in recent years. North America • Canada. Prince Edward Island joined the remaining nine provinces in offering women in-province abortion services in 2017. • United States. A record number of women ran for Congress and won Democratic Party nominations in 2018. South Asia • India. In the summer of 2017, the Supreme Court of India declared the custom of divorcing a wife by declaring “talaq” (I renounce you) three times to be illegal. This practice once left women without financial protec-
tion and many who were divorced in this manner became destitute. India also outlawed marital sex with minors in a bid to protect child brides in the same year. • Nepal. The custom of banishing menstruating women to cattle sheds was outlawed in 2017. • Saudi Arabia. Women were given the legal right to drive in 2018. Latin America • Chile. In 2017 the coun try decriminalized abortion in cases of rape, fetal impairment and when pregnancy is life threatening. Africa • Rwanda. A world leader in terms of female political representation, the country’s parliament has 106 seats, 59 of which are held by women as of 2018.

It’s a time to both recognize women’s achievements and acknowledge the challenges they continue to face in the pursuit of gender equality. Diet(UKZN), DCEP(CA), is a Registered Dietitian and Author of “The Empowered Mind Diet Equation – Get To The Best Version of Yourself Via Diet & Mind.” Rika is currently working as a consultant dietitian in private practice, a clinical dietitian in long term care and as a media dietitian. Rika has over 17 years of experience in the dietetic profession and has written articles for newspapers and magazines in Canada and broadcast on radio shows and satellite TV in South Africa. Rika has conducted Nutrition Store Tours at numerous locations in the Fraser Valley and is involved in nutrition events, currently focusing on the critical link between diet and the mind. Most recently Rika presented at Canada’s largest Gluten Free Event at Vancouver Convention Centre in January. Rika has always displayed a sound interest in nutrition and the effects of nutritional practices on health and well-being and is committed to supporting, educating and motivating clients to achieve their nutrition goals for improved overall health.

Throughout her career, Katerina has progressed a range of priority economic and social public policy and sector issues and initiatives. She is an advocate for the advancement of women in leadership and business. Katerina has been instrumental in major initiatives such as the re-establishment of the Vancouver International Maritime Centre to attract shipping offices to Vancouver and in the re-establishment of the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade’s World Trade Centre. Katerina was also the Chair of the Women’s Leadership Circle at the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade from 2013-2017. Most recently, she played an integral role to the advancement of Covenant House Vancouver’s latest capital expansion project and operations for increased capacity to support at-risk homeless youth.
