This guide functions as a useful resource for locals and as an introduction to the community for newcomers. It provides a glimpse into our organization and highlights the wide variety of businesses that are our members. The reasons for living and doing business on the Saanich Peninsula are countless. The setting is visually stunning. The climate accommodates year-round recreational opportunities such as boating, kayaking, hiking and cycling. We have easy access to reliable transportation for goods and people. The setting and lifestyle opportunities are the roots from which our community is growing. We are home to restaurants, farms, arts & culture, technology & manufacturing firms, service industries and tourist attractions. The Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce has been building community in partnership with our members since 1912. The businesses support the growth and maintenance of infrastructure projects as well as providing necessary funding for local sports teams and arts and culture initiatives. These businesses contribute to “community” in many more ways than might be readily apparent. The election campaigns of 2014 have now been assigned to local history. In the three municipalities of the Saanich Peninsula, the recently elected municipal representatives have all taken their oath of office and are now facing the task of doing their best to meet the expectations of the electorate. We caught up with the mayors of North Saanich, Central Saanich and Sidney to find out what they considered to be the major challenges that they would face in 2015. Here are the results of those interviews.

North Saanich is fortunate to be home to two of the largest transportation hubs on Vancouver Island: Victoria International Airport and BC Ferries Swartz Bay terminal. The Peninsula also has the distinction of hosting an economic powerhouse with a large concentration of commercial and light industrial organizations operating on and around airport lands.

We’re also a business friendly community. Along with our vibrant downtown we have our westside business park with advanced manufacturing, warehouse, high-tech, and aviation businesses, several of which do business globally. The Tsehum Harbour area has a commercial fishery, marinas, and is a hub for the marine service industry on Southern Vancouver Island.

Federal interests are well represented by the Institute of Ocean Sciences at Patricia Bay, the Centre for Plant Health and the new Department of National Defence – 443 Squadron facility at the airport. With a third of our land area in the provincial Agricultural Land Reserve or zoned agricultural outside the ALR it should be no surprise that North Saanich along with Central Saanich play an important regional role. North Saanich has taken a strong leadership role by showcasing the economic importance of local food security and food production. Organized by CRFAIR our annual Flavour Trail celebrations in late August highlight the varied and important contributions of local agricultural businesses.

An Introduction... to the Saanich Peninsula

The Saanich Peninsula, located north of Victoria, is home to a number of communities, starting with Saanich in the south, stretching through Central Saanich and ending with the communities of Sidney and North Saanich. Each town has it’s own distinctive character and administration. Its name in the Saanich dialect, WSÁNEĆ, which means “raised up” , where meaning the people, that term means “emerging people.” The Peninsula is the historical heartland of four Coast Salish First Nations: Tseycum, Tsawout, Tsartlip and Paquachin. With the airport and ferry terminals located at its northern end, the Peninsula is often seen as the gateway to Vancouver Island. Visitors arriving from the mainland can not only enjoy the Peninsula’s warm hospitality and business opportunities, but the weather too, which is the driest on the island.

The Peninsula News Review newspaper is based in Sidney, and has served its Saanich Peninsula readership for over a hundred years. In 2012, former editors Erin Cardone and Judy Reimche, along with Brad Morrison of the Sidney Museum and Archives, pored over a century’s worth of newspapers to prepare for a special centenary edition. Back then, all those generations ago, the newspaper was named the Sidney and Islands Review, and the place we call home was very different to how it is today. “Its streets were unpaved, there were no sidewalks and its citizens lived without the luxury of a water system, sewers or electric lights,” wrote Cardone.

INDUSTRY At the turn of the 20th Century, Sidney was home to a cannery, sawmill, rubber company and fish processing plant. In 1919, the Board of Trade lobbied for Sidney to be designated a village, something that finally happened in 1952. By the 1960’s, Sidney was a growing town, with new housing and stores being built to service its rapidly expanding population. This included four and five story complexes springing up, which included retail and residential space. Industries located outside of town continued to provide jobs and attract workers from elsewhere on the island and beyond.

Sidney has retained the charm of its humble beginnings and has a friendly small-town feel, As the area grew and industries started to with a gentle pace of life. Saanich forecasts that the area should see another 3,500 jobs created over the next 25 years. The Sean Heights Business Park is home to a number of companies, including Level Ground Trading, which specializes in tea, coffee, cereals and dried fruit, sourced from sustainable producers. They host public tours around their packing and roasting facility, and a tasting room opened last summer.

TOURISM AND RETAIL The beautiful ocean vistas have long attracted tourists to the Saanich Peninsula - even as far back as 1891 when the Sidney Hotel opened. Since then, the hotel has expanded into the Cannery Building and changed its name to the Sidney Waterfront Inn and Suites. Thanks to Sidney’s thriving tourism industry, a whole host of nearby hotels, motels, B&Bs and campgrounds cater to visitors, all-year-round.

In early February, the daffodils start to bloom and, by early April, the Peninsula’s sweet black soil offers the first vegetables of the season. Strong green shoots poking out of gently furrowed fields indicate the bounties to be harvested. By June, plump blueberries, raspberries and strawberries will be on sale at Sidney Street Market, perhaps from Victoria Lavender Farm, one of the many berry growing concerns in the area. A short drive through Central and North Saanich will join up the smaller farms that dot the region. Cross-pollination is not only a farming concept, as many local businesses create and support new ones. For example, Applied Bionomics breeds natural pest controls that minimize the use of pesticides and supply local clients that include Butchart Gardens, Eurosa Farms, Longview Farm, Sun Wing and Dan’s Farm.

The ferries ply perhaps the most picturesque routes in the world, with voyages that weave between the many Canadian and US archipelagoes, including Orcas Island and the San Juans. The close proximity to nature and the breathtaking views that abound on the Peninsula are key reasons why people seek the island lifestyle. There is scuba diving or kayaking in Brentwood Bay, bike paths on Lochside Trail and gorgeous walks to be enjoyed at Island View Beach or the National Park Reserve. In North Saanich a fun activity is looking for sand dollars and herons at Patricia Bay.
